Ok folks, this could rival Nem for biggest OP, so buckle up for safety.
Participants.
This is an international affair, with the entire globe being represented (sans Asia ... not sure if we have any members here at DTF from Africa or Antarctica!) I'm also splitting you into two "teams". Stay tuned as to why.

Since nicknames seem to be the chic thing to do for Roulette's, here are yours. Some are kinda obvious, some more obscure (pun totally intended). See if you can figure out who you are.

Format:
I'm trying to keep it as much to your own discretion as possible. All due respect to the organizers of some of the Roulette's I participated in, I sometimes found it too constraining... I didn't feel there were enough open rounds, and sometimes the themes and time limits were too restrictive. Far too many situations where I wanted to send a particular song or band, but couldn't fit it into the "theme", or the time limit. As well, I would submit a band or song in an early round that would've fit perfectly into a theme of a later round, but was hosed because I couldn't re-use the band. So, with that in mind, I'm keeping 1/2 of the rounds totally open, and will at times allow bands to be re-used, but specifically comment which ones. Also, so you can kinda plan, and I'm gonna let you know what the theme's will be and when:
Round 1 - Open
Round 2 - Ballad
Round 3 - Open
Round 4 - Guilty Pleasure
Round 5 - Emotional Rescue
Round 6 - Second Chances (do-over)
Round 7 - Last Chance (open)
More details will be provided as I launch each round.
Now, just for shits and giggles, there's a wrinkle for the three open rounds. I'm gonna take the first song from the current broadcast of WPaPU that I don't know, along with a random recommendation from my last.fm and everyone will be competing against those two songs as well. Anyone who scores less than both those in all three open rounds will receive a 3 point "nick/last.fm-fail" penalty.
And ... side contests. Given the international flavour, I'm also going to pit American's vs Rest of World (Nekov .. sorry, you get lumped in with the American's so it's 5 on 5). Everyone will go a one-on-one matchup against another in the first 5 rounds, and we'll see who's the best them - Team America (FUCK YEAH!), or The Internationalists.
After the opening 7 rounds, there will be 2 playoff rounds to determine the Jingle.Champ. The top 2 will instantly advance to the Semi-finals, while seeds 3-6 will duke it out in the quarter finals. 7-10, you're with all of the lost souls that Mason and Senem torched. No soup for you!
Quarter finals (3 vs 6; 4 vs 5) - Riffer Madness
Semi Finals (1 vs 4; 2 vs 3) - Adrenaline Rush
Finals - Open; 2 songs
No time limits, as I don't want anyone to have the frustration of feeling they have the perfect song, but can't send it because of a time constraint. Just bear in mind that with with 10 of you here, the longer the songs, the less time I'll have for multiple listens. The point of the theme's is to mix things up. Don't sacrifice song quality for the theme. If I think the song sucks, then it doesn't matter if it fits the theme perfectly. I still want music I will like, first and foremost.

But, don't go off my last fm as gospel. I've got 25 years of music listening experience that can't be scrobbled off of any record player, CD or Maxell XLII cassette (RJ and Joe know what I'm talkin about I'm sure), and I only just started scrobbling last fall.
Purpose:
I'm not doing this to explore new genre's of music, so don't expect to get much love from death metal, electronica or any genre requiring "post" or "core" in its name. I know what I like, and you'll see from my Top 50 and last.fm that I'm a Classic/Glam/Melodic/Progressive Rock kinda guy. Splash a little metal and symphonic rock along with it, and those are my tastes. I'm doing this mainly to just listen to some great songs (so don't feel you have to submit something from a band with a great discography - send me a one-hit wonder if you want). This *may* lead to exploring new bands, but it is as much just for shits and giggles. I doubt we'll get up to 42 pages like Nem's, but let the trash talking fly.
Scoring:
5 point reverse, double/must scoring system. What the fuck does that mean? Reverse ... I'm gonna assign a ranking (not a score), so a low number (like in golf) is good. Double/must .. I have to use all 5 scores, twice each. There will be two scores of 5, two of 4 and so on. That might mean great songs get ranked 5th, it doesn't mean it is 5x worse than the #1 ranked songs, just that there were 9 songs better than it. I'll probably regret this kind of scoring, but I'm going to force myself to stack rank your submissions. So, as in golf, it isn't just about how well you're doing, but how well your competition is faring. You may shoot 15 under at Augusta, but if someone shoots 16 under, you're still first loser.
As a reminder, preferred submission format is an .mp3 in an email (hopefully you kept my invitation) so I can take the songs on the go when I'm traveling, or walking the dogs. Second option is YT, which I should be able to get on my iPhone to take on the go. Only send me another format (Grooveshark or Spotify ... found a workaround for that as a Canadian) if your song isn't in either of those.

Good question... no rule against it. If you feel the live version is better than the studio, by all means let it ride. There are lots of songs where I prefer the live version to the studio - some where I actually can't listen to the studio version because the live version is so much better - but I only know that by comparing the two... so it may be a risk given I won't have a reference point for comparison. Given these will be new bands, the virgin ears may not be poised to appreciate the awesomeness of a live version!

Ok, so ... ya. Had one listen of all the tracks so far. Just as I predicted, I'm kicking myself for the forced ranking system. There are going to be some very good songs/bands that get ranked low just because there are other tracks that are just that much better than it. Goes to show what a solid taste in music ya'll have... and how well you know what appeals to me.

Maradona: In the Eye, by Iluvatar
This reminded me of Genesis/Domino with the electronic sounding drums 1/2 way thru; solid vocals, good mix of styles that flowed nicely. This is one of those tracks that, while I liked it plenty (and it got better with every listen), I liked the others above it more. Victim of stiff competition.

The Viking: Gloria, by Mando Diao
Man, that was F-U-N!! That put the "fun" in funky, but I'm not sure it has lasting value. Left me feeling like this is what the result would be if the Village People tried to recreate the vibe of Copacabana. I believe the 'fun-ness' will wear off quickly. Good track though.

The Skipper: The Wrong Side of Weird, by IQ
More like 'the right side of awesome'. Lonestar comes to the battle with Nem wielding a big blade. Main/opening melody sounds incredibly like The Song Remains the Same. This had everything I love in a great prog song - strong keys, great instrumental section, wicked vocals, excellent and diverse guitar licks. This one rocked my socks. Helps that he led with a band I've been dying to hear. Given he got his in before the DJ, I feared for her well being this round.

Wow... killer - ABOLUSTELY KILLER - prog metal. I needed a cigarette after this one, and I quit smoking 20+ years ago. Hit on every nerve of what I love in music these days. I was worried that my impression was swayed by her 'presentation' (with the back story that this is part of a concept album, and given to me in the form of a very well done video). However, with every subsequent listen (sans video), it just got better. Gotta get me some more of this. This is the track that "moved" me.

Started kinda odd and strange. Almost like late 60s psycadellic/experimental stuff. Finished very strong though. Nice instrumental outro. The styles just seemed to bounce all over the place with no real flow

The Koala: Fly to the Moon, by Axel Rudi Pell
Killer opening riff. This is what I call knowing your audince - Kade leads with a vocalist he knows I love, and I suspect he wanted to get ARP submitted before anyone else could.. I pictured Animal from the muppets on the drums... Frantic yet controlled. ARP has been high on the radar for a while, and this only confirms it's a top priority. ARP delivers a great solo. Overall, an excellent melodic track, the kind that I can't get enough of this these days

Very good technical prog metal; strong bass elements. Good, but not great. Something about it just didn't click with me

Hot damn... Another killer opening riff; just a splash of growlie's (placed appropriately); great hooks, wicked vocal harmonies, nice guitar runs that aren't over-powering. Speed, power, and glam all in one. Guitar solo that had feeling and emotion. Lady Obscure reviewed one of their tracks on her 'zine, and I stated that it "scratched me right where I itch". This track was even better.

The Blue Bomber: Demon Bell, by Dangerous Toys
Trying to appeal to my love of 80s glam, and failing miserably. This one was generic, formulatic glam/hair metal. Sorry man. You've got great taste in music, but this didn't float my boat. This might've appealed to me 25 years ago, but now this track just seems bland, lacklustre and uninspiring.

The Guitar Hero: Red Line Highway, by ZO2
When I plopped the tunes into a playlist and just went with it, I instantly knew this one was Coz's before even checking; great hard rock; killer riff; very Deep Purple like with the racing/charging feel. I was worried after JJ's submission, that the style of music that defined me in my teens and early 20s would be lost on me today... Not so. This track restored my faith that I will always love good ole' rock 'n' roll. Pictured our Guitar Hero on stage rockin out to this one the whole time. Unfortunately, another victim of stiff competition. I loved this, but loved a few others even more.

Being a teenager and cutting my musical chops in the mid/late 80s, I got my fill of Power Ballads. Probably still one of my most favorite styles of songs. So, send me one. Doesn't necessarily need to be 'Power', as I also like simple, straight forward ballads as well.

I was really like :| when I first heard it, but it grew on me. The 2nd half was really good, but couldn't make up for what I didn't like in the first half.

Kim Mitchell is pretty damn good. I've heard a little bit of Max Webster and it was pretty decent. I don't know that much about him and should check out his work more.

I liken him to a Canadian version of Jimmy Buffet. Not really ALL of the USA is endeared with Buffet but there are a couple states where the guy is a god. Same with Kim. He's big time Candiana. Like the Tragically Hip, or the Northern Pikes.

He played at my University when I was a freshman. His concerts are legendary. He still plays some bars/outdoor festivals every now and then.

Well, I'll start with this. Some of you have a fucked up definition of what a ballad is! Very diverse listening experience this round. And without furth ado ... (and a reminder to the good Doctor... low score is good)
The Maradona (Nekov): Anathema - Lightning Song
Beautiful song, no question. Wasn't really into the intro, but when the full band hit, that was nice. Comes at you with a very uplifting and inspirational feel. This felt like the kinda song you want/need when you're so down you need a something to pick you up; when you're so far down in despair, that the only thing you have is hope, this song feels like it would fuel that hope.
Ranking: 3
The Blue Bomber(jjrock): Crimson Glory - Painted Skies
Call him the comeback kid this round. Nice way to bounce back man - from worst to (almost) first. This is just what I was hoping for and expecting. Beautiful acoustic guitar work. Had everything that I love in a great power ballad.
Ranking: 1
The Skipper (chef): Mechanical Poet - Clue of a Scarecrow
Nice simple symphonic track. Cool back-story too. I’m very intrigued to check out the rest of this. Musically - fantastic. The guy has a great voice, great range, but geez-Louise ... E-nun-ci-ate! I get that English is probably his second language, but I would've questioned whether this was English at all if you hadn't provided the lyrics! I’ll bet in the context of the whole album, this has a perfect fit.

The Viking (zydar): Nikola Sarcevic - Goodbye I Die
Staying patriotic with another home-country act. This one is a very simple song, vocal and guitar (mandolin?) only. Not at all what I was anticipating ... Very much outside the box. More folk-sy than anything. Just the right kind of song to cuddle up with Mrs.Jingle to, sitting by the fire, just sipping on a glass of wine. This grew on me.

The Monarch (king): Michael Penn - Bucket Brigade
Another soft simple ballad with emphasis on the vocals. Very similar to Zydar’s, but with a few more accompanying instruments, including a banjo and accordion? Lyrics didn't really do much for me, neither did the music.
Ranking: 5
The DJ (obscure): Kamelot - The Zodiac
Would expect nothing less from Nem. This was the heaviest of all the ballads. Started off with much promise, then quickly went sideways. Fell back into place a bit when the solo hit. Up to that point, I was mostly 'meh'. Liked the vocalist, but because of the up-and-down flow to the melody, it kinda felt more like moaning than singing. P.S. ‘tails’ wouldn’t have done any better for you.
Ranking: 5
The Quack (Dr. DTVT): Epica - Solitary Ground
So much passion in Simone's voice. She pours her heart into the song. I wouldn't put Simone at the same level of appreciation I have for either of the Jansen sisters, or Tarja, but she was very nice. Musically, loved it. Every listen got better. Might have to give Epica another chance … yeah, definitely based on the WPaPU play tonight.

The Koala (wolfking): Lord - New Horizons
This has absolutely everything that I love about a great ballad, slowly builds on itself to a grand climax, and then let's you down sowly after an emotionally charged and moving guitar solo that matches the mood of the song beautifully. Great intro. Love the acoustic melody. Rich guitar sound, full and pure vocals, great harmonies. Nailed it.. Knocked it right out of the fucking park!

The Geetar Hero (coz): McAuley Shenker Group – Anytime
Nice! Coz wearing his tastes on his sleeve yet again. Good down home, meat and potatoes, rock 'n' roll ballad. Love the backing vocals. Gritty/raspy vocals that totally reminded me of Tom Keifer, which seems to work well with me these days. It had all the right elements of what I love in power ballads, but ... I dunno.... Had a certain je ne sai quois that left it feeling a little ordinary. Still, as you put it, it was right over the plate.

The Tarantula (ytsebitsyspider): Peter Frampton – Greens
More bluesy and soulful than a ballad. It's like the guitar is crying out, just to be heard. Frampton is a great guitarist for sure. Gotta be in the right mood for a track like this. Not sure I’d come back to it very often, but it was a good one.

Ok, since you're in a planning mood, here's my Round 4 pre-amble.
This is going to be the most restrictive of all the rounds. We all have that song, artist or album that is a complete departure from our usual tastes. As an example, for me there are quite a few songs by Celine Dion that I dig. Send me something that will make me think "Wow, wasn't expecting you'd like *that*" - either because of the band, style or whatever. I will completely suspend all judgments of said band, style, genre etc that I have. Send me rap, send me kids songs, send me anything that you dig that is out of the norm for you. It still has to be a decent tune though! However, if it's something you really dig, I'll respect that first, put my own (potential) discrimination aside, and listen with a completely open mind. It is likely to be hit-or-miss this round, so the America vs International competition will be temporarily suspended.

See this round is going to be tough cause a band like Tears For Fears I'm a huge fan of and own quite a bit of their stuff. I'm proud of loving their music and even though it is different I wouldn't call it a guilty pleasure. This is gonna be tough.

Round 3 Results. Most solid round so far. Best song was easy to identify, as was the least best. Everything in between was all very good, and very hard to rank.
Lonestar: Mandroid Echostar - Kingdom of the Crown
Getting heavy on me. Some quality technical prog-metal here. Excellent vocal performance. The band puts together seamless time and key signature changes. Damn fine. Very talented bunch here. Technically stunning… reminded me of Eumeria in that regard. The only knock is that sometimes the technical brilliance is there just because they can, not because it makes sense, or fits appropriately. The last 90 seconds were chubby inducing though.

JJ: Black Sabbath – Headless Cross
Very good track. Absolutely nothing wrong with it, but nothing stood out for me. Unfortunately, in this round with this group, that puts it in the bottom of the pack.

Finally! This is the kind of stuff I've been waiting for and expecting from you. What an amazing instrumental opening. Rivals anything Spock's Beard has ever done. No shit it's Ozzy/Wylde - You could've changed the meta-tags on the file to say so, and I would have NEVER known. I was never a huge fan of Ozzy though. Some crazy guitar licks and squeals. Even has that Ozzy vocal feel of being hollow and echoing. This was very nice. Doesn't matter that I'm not normally being an Ozzy fan, I REALLY liked this one. While the guitar work wasn't the best this round (Coz get's that award), the overall package was the most rockin one. :2metal:

meh... can't put my finger on it, but it wasn't very memorable on first listen. Decent though. This is why you listen more than once - 2nd listen was much better than the first. Had a nice Frost*(y) feel to it. This really got better with every listen. Comparatively speaking though, it was missing a great hook, or a great solo, or a great melody… It was solid all around, just missing that “great” factor.

Spidey: Ozric Tentacles - Lost in the Sky
Geez, got something against vocals? A little too ... dunno, is that genre labeled "post" something? Got funky in the middle, and not in a good way. In the way that some leftovers were forgotten in the back of the fridge for 7-8 weeks. Some good, mostly not though… by and large, weird. Some elements in the middle took my mind back to this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BuBJLTdr_pQ). Nothing wrong with it I guess, but there was nothing right with it either. I think you also lost points because, when I checked them out to see what kind of genre they are, there was a mention of "dub", which is one mention too many.

Doc: The Tangent – In Darkest Dreams
Bookends were great. Keyboard starts like the greats of the 70s – Emerson, Wakeman, Wright etc... Some of the segments in the middle were a little experimental and wonky (Exhibit A - piano solo sounded like it was created by a 5 year old). Felt like early 70s Jethro Tull got time-warped into 2012 and made some music - Exhibit B - flute and sax work on more than one occasion. This has lasting value. Overall though, there were some weak parts that kept it in the middle of the pack this round.

Obscure: Shaman – Over Your Head
You chose wisely this round Lady. More Prog-metal here. More simple and straight-forward in the prog-metal ness of this song vs the Chefs submission (I only compare as I first listened to them back-to-back). Very nice vocal screams - screams, not growls. Killer instrumental wanking section – especially the keyboards, great outro too. Loved it long time. Have always like Matos’ voice, need to check more of him out.

Coz: Paul Gilbert – Bliss
Mind blowing axe work, but would you expect anything less from Gilbert? His vocals weren't nearly as cringe-worthy as I was expecting. In fact they were pretty decent. Simple, but decent. It was good that he didn't try to do anything more than he was capable of (vocally). On the axe, he's capable of anything, and showed it here. Great main riff. Tough round though, lots of stuff had a more complete package. This re-affirms that I should get more Gilbert in my library. Better vocals, this would’ve ranked higher.

Eventually, you'll run out of Aussie bands to use! Until then, keep sending me this great shit coming from down under. Another excellent track. I'd heard a bit of VP before (I recall Mason using them in a Roulette I was in with him). Excellent prog-rock here ... not nearly as heavy as some of the other tracks this round. Can't say anything bad about this one. You brought it again this round. Vocals were calm, cool and collected. Very soothing. Great guitar melodies and solo. Not too flashy, just simple and very appealing in that regard. The unison outro was very nice.

Ok, since you're in a planning mood, here's my Round 4 pre-amble.
This is going to be the most restrictive of all the rounds. We all have that song, artist or album that is a complete departure from our usual tastes. As an example, for me there are quite a few songs by Celine Dion that I dig. Send me something that will make me think "Wow, wasn't expecting you'd like *that*" - either because of the band, style or whatever. I will completely suspend all judgments of said band, style, genre etc that I have. Send me rap, send me kids songs, send me anything that you dig that is out of the norm for you. It still has to be a decent tune though! However, if it's something you really dig, I'll respect that first, put my own (potential) discrimination aside, and listen with a completely open mind. It is likely to be hit-or-miss this round, so the America vs International competition will be temporarily suspended.
Send something that's out of the norm for you're usual tastes. Something you normally wouldn't even admit you like. I gave one of mine earlier.

So, that was an interesting round. Now that it’s over, I really don’t know what the hell I was thinking it would accomplish. Seemed like a good idea when I dreamed it up, and I had good intentions of seeing it through. However, they say that the road to hell is paved with good intentions, and I sure felt like I was in hell listening to some of this (jk... but it was kinda nasty at some points). In retrospect, this theme was kinda silly in the grand scheme of things. Very few of these have any replay value, and I think that one listen was plenty for a lot of those tracks (ie, all I could take and keep a sane mind). Now that I think about it, I guess this round was for more of my own entertainment than anything else. Some of that was torture, some I liked. Most of you nailed the “wow, wasn’t expecting you’d like THAT” theme.
Lonestar: Cast of Cats - Gus: The Theatre Cat
Probably much better, and would appreciate it much more in the context of the whole show. It'd be like listening to Come To Me (Fontaine's Death) all on it's own. I can see how it's a mother of a tear jerker.

Symphonic metal cover of a good pop song. This is a 'guilty pleasure'? Seems like a perfectly fine metal tune. Really liked it, which isn't surprising with Marco (Nightwish) handling some of the vocals. Amongst the rest of the tunes, I think the point of the theme was missed. Matters not.

Actually kinda enjoyed this. These kids got some decent chops. Decent lyrics, and a very simple rock vibe.

Hot chicks; good vocals. Nice melody. Very Madonna like in some segments. You got very sneaky with the convenient video submission. However, to level the playing field, I restrained. Now I will go back and re-watch (on mute)

ugh... heavy electonic(a) to start. Man, it's amazing how much influence Madonna did have on so many styles of music. I never was in to the dance scene which this totally felt like. First few minutes were tough. When the main keyboard melody kicked in, that was ok. Vocals were ok. Might've liked the radio edit version (like half the length) more. Music wasn't too bad, but the repetitiveness was a killin me! Best part was the ending, as in it finally ended.

Wolf: Pete Murray - You Pick Me Up
Nice little track. Mellow, almost folk-sy. Yours was the last submission, so by this time, I'd been beaten into submission, and decided how I was going to handle this round.

Let me start by saying there wasn’t a bad song in the bunch here. I loved them all - for different reasons. There also wasn’t a standout (good or bad) unlike what I found in the first three rounds. So, this was incredibly hard to rank, and as I said in the OP, just because a song is ranked 5, doesn’t mean it’s 5 times worse than the top ranked songs. The margin of difference in how much I liked all of these songs was very small. If I was just straight assigning points out of 5, there would be all 4s and 5s here.
But, ranking is how I’m going about doing it. That said, I looked to some other factors in the ranking - how well it fit the theme, and how much I felt compelled to check out the rest of their work
Nekov: Unicorn- Hiding Again
nice solemn piano intro. Vocal accompaniment was ok, good, but not great - something about his tone didn't jive with me - ahh... it's Swano. Ironically, I like him better when he's close to growling. I really dug the keyboard elements throughout. Liked Swano as he got more powerful with the singing. Nice female segment. 9 minute track that - like King last round - went by real quick. Musically, great, better vocals would've scored it higher.

Wolf: Ark - Feed the Fire
Gollum would say "sneaky little Aussie is tricksy ", giving me another vocalist he knows I have a man-crush on. But, this was kinda strange... At first the vocals sounded dull and flat (not in his tone, but just not as full and powerful as I normally have come to expect from him). He just didn't have that uumph, that I love from everything else involving Jorn. Still, his voice is something I can't seem to get enough of lately. Quality melodic track. Hurts me to put anything by Jorn at the bottom of the pile, but this one - good as it was - didn't measure up to the rest of the tracks this round.

Lonestar: Otep - Ghost Flowers
cool base intro; nice riff; dark and disturbing feel to start. Female growlies... Strange, but not unappealing. Man she be mad. Drum fills all over the place. Heavy, HEAVY powerful riffs - guitar and bass. Mother-fuckin metal. Heaviest track this round for sure. Nice track, but it's like I said in the OP, it's not just how you do, but how the competition does. This was very good, but the others were just a shade better.

Ytse: Times of Grace - Live in Love
Beautiful guitar sound; beautiful vocals (when they're clean); even the growlies are smooth and tolerable. Great message in the lyrics. Growlie vs Growlie between you and the Chef. Ytse gets the edge. Can't get the melody or the message out of my head. Not sure I could take a lot of this style of music... it's good in moderation, and this was very good.

King: Dark New Day - Pieces
One angry guitar. Dark, dark riff that is grinding and harsh. Another use of appropriate growlie vocals. Just enough to fit, and not overstay their welcome. I flopped back and forth at least 4 times as to where this vs JJ's song should rank, and even changed it again as I post.
Ranking: 4
JJ: Silent Force - Hear Me Calling
Solid prog-metal. DC is another vocalist that I love (and I think JJ knew that). Silent Force has been on the radar, and again, this kind of track reaffirms why. Nice flow to the song... Powerful and racing, then calm and mellow. Keyboards were just right, and DC had a really nice ending scream. Got better with every listen and I'll definitely be jumping in with Silent Force soon. Realy nice guitar solo. Despite not having a clear emotional connection, this gets ever so slight of an edge over King for being the better song.

Doc: Kevin Gilbert - Song for a Dead Friend
Thankfully, I've not had to experience suicide first hand. I told Mason there weren't words in the English language that could articulate the feelings this induces. This is an incredibly ... Profound song. That's about the best word I can think of to use. As far as the theme goes, Mason slayed you all... combined. But, this isn't just about the theme, but overal how much I liked the song. Which I did very much. Man, I was listening to Redemption earlier the day that the good doctor sent this, and decided to immediately follow this one with No Tickets to the Funeral. Honestly, I have no words to describe how I feel as I listened to these back-to-back.

Zydar: Ocean Color Scene - This Day Should Last Forever
Not at all what I was expecting.. And like nothing like any other song this round. A very uplifting feel, but taking a Celtic approach - accoustic, violin, and ... accordion? Neat little track. Had me snapping my fingers and tapping my toes along with it. Another FUN track from the Viking. Not my usual preference, but hey, I like Damian Wilson's solo stuff, which is really funky and out of the norm. I liked this one. When you're in a good mood, this is just what you need to put you in a great mood. This reminded me a lot of Spirit of the West... whom I love, but are at the bottom of my Top 50 album list. It pains me to give this a 5, because it was so fun, and the most up-beat song of the round.

Coz: Gary Moore - Still Got The Blues
Completely different from anything anyone else sent. Nice bluesy song, reminiscent of Since I've Been Loving You with all those little guitar squeals. Liked the symphonic back ground. Killer solo, KILLER solo - best of the Roulette so far. Gary's got a real nice smooth voice too.

Obscure: CRASHDÏET - It's a Miracle
Very nice. Quick, to the point, inspiring. Just the kind of track you'd want when you're in the best of moods. It's like it would give you that little push to make you feel even more high on life when you're already on cloud 9. Would've been better if there had been a better copy than just YT.

If you want a mulligan on one of your submissions (and I suspect most of you will... everyone had at least one song that finished 4th or 5th), now's your chance to erase that mark. Pick any one of the previous theme's (including the open ones), and you can swap your score from that round. Or, if you want to play it as it lies, you can abstain from trading your points this round, but I do need a song from everyone so that I can hand out complete rankings. Recognize that some of you may be taking a risk. For those that (may) attempt to replace a 4th place ranking, if you score 5th this round, then 5 it is. When you submit your song, please confirm that you will replace your score, and what round/theme you're choosing. Because this round is going to be a mixed bag, side competitions are suspended again (and to prolong the drama a little until the final non-playoff round).

This is still anyone's game. And remember, just like all sports (and as the LA Kings are proving), the most important thing is to just make the playoffs. Once there, everything is up for grabs. As a reminder of the format... Top 6 make the playoffs. I may have to figure out a way to deal with tie-breakers.

Take any song/theme from a previous round, and you get a "do-over". That score is out the window, and whatever you get this round replaces it. Example, round 1 (open) send me a new song, and whatever you score this round will replace the "4" you got with In the Eye.

Love, LOVE, LOVE her voice! Great guitar work, nice riffs and melodies. These kind of up-beat fast paced tunes really tickle my fancy these days. Everything just gels so nicely together. *tlonk*... What's that? ... the sound of you knocking it out of the park.

Solid, liked it just fine. Downside, nothing stood out significantly for me. Vocal solo's were done well, but on the whole, it landed in the middle of the road for me.

Another good submission. Nothing bad about this at all, but much like the Karmakanic track, nothing really wow'd me either. Solo was really good... Good guitar work overall really. If you thought my tastes sucked before, this is really going to cement it for you.

JJ: Rough Cutt - Dreaming Again
Very nice sold tune. Quintessential glam look and sound from these guys. Another nice Power Ballad, even though he's not replacing the ballad round. Nice main riff. Production felt a little flat... But in some ways that is typical for this era of music

Ytse: Theocracy - Laying the Demon to Rest
For as much that I loved about this, there were as many parts that I was 'meh' about. Some of it turned the thrash metal dial up just way too much for my liking - for the most part, that's a genre that I just find to be over the top and unimaginative. Other parts were really good - fantastic vocals (lead and backing); love the chorus'... Great final scream. Overall, miles better than the Ozric song, but wasn't balanced enough to keep pace with everyone else this round

Zydar: Hammerfal - Glory to the Brave
Really nice vocals on this. Can totally pick out the power side of these guys, even in a ballad. Gonna have to check out their heavier songs.

Funny enough, I just watched Kade play this on the guitar this morning too. Now this is a Power Ballad!!! Anything coming from the President of Frontier Records has got to be something right up my alley, and this certainly was. Kiske has such a great voice. Nice melody, touching lyrics, impressive guitar solo... All the right elements of a great power ballad.

Wolf and Nem are guaranteed playoff spots, and Coz is virtually guaranteed. He'd need a Red Sox like collapse and stellar performances from jj, Spidey and Zy to be eliminated.

You guys have made this ranking scoring system insanely difficult (as I knew you would). So, I want to remind everyone of a couple of ground rules I laid out to start.
I know what I like, and you'll see from my Top 50 and last.fm that I'm a Classic/Glam/Melodic/Progressive Rock kinda guy. Splash a little metal and symphonic rock along with it, and those are my tastes. I'm doing this mainly to just listen to some great songs
Throughout the competition, some songs strayed from this - some clicked; some didn't. Risks don't always come with the reward. Doesn't mean I didn't like those songs that strayed outside of my normal genre preferences. Just perhaps that I didn't like them as much.
One thing I do want to stress is that this is for fun ... for all of us. As RJ said in his Roulette, no getting all "butt-hurt" if your song ranks low, or if I don't like it as much as you do - "we are different people, and that's what makes communities like this so special." So, let's just have some fun with this.
Here's the thing. Trying to rank the songs has been like a 100M race at the Olympics. For the most part, the margin of difference on how much I like each of the songs is miniscule. Ranking 5th does not mean the #1 ranked song is 5x better.
This final round before the playoffs has been the best so far, and yet again, I will disappoint/annoy some of you with the rankings. That's inevitable. It would be easy to just hand out 4s and 5s every round, but I decided I would take the hard route and stack rank the songs. I know everyone thinks their song is the bomb - you wouldn't send it otherwise. No one sends me a song thinking it's gonna be a 4 or a 5, but unfortunately 4 songs have to fall into that ranking. So, suck it up, take the bruise to your ego with compliment that I still think these are excellent songs, and will get lots of replay value from almost all 70 songs I've received.
I've accomplished everything I wanted to with this Roulette - listened to 70 excellent tracks, had a lot of fun, and have explored a few new bands (bought four albums as a result of the roulette so far... and another 5 on my radar that I will get). So, my I give you all my eternal gratitude and thanks for that. Hope everyone else had fun too.

Coz: Racer-X - Bolt in my Heart
Very solid rock track, with (obviously) seriously mad guitar action with Gilbert again. It pains me to have this in the bottom half, because I really love Gilbert's handiwork. I can't really pinpoint why it's near the bottom, but in turn, can't pinpoint a reason why it should be near the top.

Zydar: Bloodbound - Nosferatu
If immitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then Maiden should certainly feel flattered. That galloping feel that is such a trademark of Maiden's songs is unmistakable, along with the simple (but very nice) guitar melody and solo along with a quick unison at the end of the solo. Really liked this one, great power metal tune :letam: :metal. The only Maiden element that was missing was the repetitive chanting/chorus. :lol

Doc: Power of Omens - Alone I Stand
The Doc pulls out the insanely technical prog metal again. Great tune, incredible musicianship, and the chops on the lead singer!!! Aye Carumba! But like the Clockwork song in round 1, I think it's just too much to take in with only a few listens to truly appreciate. Eumeria took me a lot of spins to get past the "holy hell this is insane" stance, and just love the music. This is going to be the same too. I will come back to this (and to Test of Wills - that was even twice as insanely technical). But I better not be relegated to only being able to find them on MySpace. :getoffmylawn:

I don't know who's a more 'meat-and-potatos' rock 'n' roll guy ... You or Coz. Liked this long time. It was 'complex' by glam rock standards (certainly not by prog standards). Good vocals, nice guitar melody.

King: Magic Pie - Without Knowing Why
Nothing wrong with a little pie (:eyebrows:). And Zydar was the one that told me his song felt like Hallowed Be Thy Name. Man, this had feelings of Maiden and DT all through it. Definitely they put their own spin on it though. Killer instrumental section. Production was a little hollow sounding during the intro section, but this was a great track.

Now that's a nice heavy song, without feeling thrashy. But damn you... Can't find these guys anywhere online - no Spotify or my normal purchase place (edit, found them on Grooveshark). Very nice song. Really good prog and technical metal. Will be checking these guys out

RJ finishes the open rounds just as he started - with another down and dirty, classic-prog style tune (hhmmm... His story ends where it began... NUGGET!!!). I don't know what sounds I liked better here ... The keys or the axe. Both were awesome, and they were in perfect complement to one another. Sorry you got a 2 again, but still lost the one-on-one matchup.

I recall reading someone on the forum crapping on Edguy (don't remember who), but I'm beginning to realize I really like Tobias' voice, and writing. Obviously, very Avantasia-like, which isn't going to hurt. Nice vocal melodies, good guitar work, and catchy hooks. Another winner by the Koala

Different than the rest, but not something I didn't like. This seemed to be your trend for the most part this roulette. This felt like metal-meets-salsa. Honestly man, there wasn't a single song that I didn't like of yours - they just strayed a few degrees off course from my usual tastes. They'll all get some replay for sure. Not sure how much deeper I'll dig into the bands, but every song you sent was solid. Straight up scoring, you probably would've finished higher. But, stack ranked... other songs just shone a little brighter. Have me in your Roulette, and you can get revenge ... or not, since our compatibility isn't all that tight based on these 7 songs. I'd be happy to try though. But no worries if not.

Llove Kelly Sundown's voice. The song itself felt kinda choppy though, never really getting into its groove. I just didn't get any flow or rhythm going. Much like the Theocracy song last round, for as much as I loved about it, there were other parts that didn't quite click with me. Guess this was Papa bear's chair.

Observations on the standings... wins/losses, while fun, weren't consistent with overall song ratings. Doc only won once, but is in. JJ with 3 wins is out. Chef got hosed a couple of times by going up against the best song of the round. King finally got a win in the final round.

One other thing I remembered about the dream. Chef is a maniac driver. Stop signs were 100% optional. He blew threw every one of them if there was even a hint of no other traffic. Zydar was crying like a little girl in the backseat.

Match 1: obscure vs Zydar
The Viking: Aerosmith/Taste of India
You know the downfall of graduating University, discovering Dream Theater (and then Mrs. Jingle) between '95 and '97? I missed out on a lot of good mid/late 90s music from some of my favorite 80s rock bands. Here’s a perfect example of why I need to go back to some of them. What a great track – and surprisingly, was the longest of the four submissions. Tyler’s voice is still in top form, experimental work with the Indian sounds, and a very solid riff. I found myself humming the melody most of the day. Two :tup :tup
The DJ: Mind’s Eye/Feed My Revolver
Well, pulling out the big guns again, going with a killer prog-metal tune from a concept album. What are ya doing to me, targeting the my musical tastes that make me weak in the knees. Left me with the same feeling and captured my attention the exact same way that Obsessions did. Fantastic heavy riff and guitar melodies, awesome vocals, subtle keyboard runs to complement the main melody ... an absolutely complete prog-metal song. The opening lyric told a tale of your intention methinks ... “Take this gun, point it at the back of his head, and pull the trigger, you hear?”
Result: Well, here’s a classic example of Don’t make me angry, you wouldn’t like me when I’m angry (https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=YOXpKUu6pUg#t=44s). I guess that 5 she got last round made Nem angry, and Zydar, she took it out on you buddy. If you’ve you seen the movie Thor, picture Zydar as a Frost Giant breaking into Odin’s vault, and Nem as the Destroyer. Aerosmith got vaporized. Not to say I didn’t like Taste of India, I absolutely did, but Feed My Revolver was ... well, I don't think there's a strong enough adjective, that’s how good it was.
Match 2: Coz vs Doc
The Geetar Hero: Dokken/Kiss of Death
Why I never got in to Dokken I’ll never know. I guess my perception of them for some reason lumped them in with Slayer, Pantera type stuff, which for the music I was in to in the 80s, was a little too heavy for me. Boy, was I wrong. Killer guitar’s (solo and the licks all over the place), great vocal range, great riff! You’ll need to give me some direction on where to go from here with Dokken. Me likey a lot.
The Quack: Tiles/Facing Failure
Using his inside knowledge gathered from Wednesday night chat sessions at WPaPU, Mason pulls out something he knows I like, and want to check out more. Top shelf huh? More like the back of the cellar (wine ... and in a good way). There was so much going on in this song, it was impossible to grasp it on my first listen (like a great bottle of wine, the first sip is never the best). More listens gave me even more to appreciate – which despite the technicality to it, I enjoyed much more than your Clockwork and Power of Omens submissions. It started a little wonky for me, but the riffs at 0:45 and 1:55 were awesome, and really brought me around on this tune.
Result: Much closer than the other matchup. This was like a triple over-time 1-0 victory/loss. I struggled real hard with this, even looked up the lyrics for each to really get to know the songs. In the end, I have to give the nod to Tiles.

Semi-Final 2: Lonestar (2) vs obscure (4) (seriously, I did not plan that, but boy-oh-boy am I glad it worked out this way!)
One piece of clarification on the Adrenaline Rush theme. Don't think that I mean it has to be super face paced at 200 bpm, with 32nd note double drum kick and Metallica/Battery style power-chords-from-hell. Those that have been paying attention should know that though.

IMO, the best Dokken album is "Under Lock and Key". One of my all-time favorite 80's albums. I'd go to Back For the Attack next, the Tooth and Nail. Though T&N is an earlier album than those two, I like the other two a little better. But definitely, UL&K is a must have.

I'd agree that you need those two albums. My personal favourite is BFTA- it may be a top 20 for me and has a bit more punch to it than ULAK but quality songwriting on both. BFTA has more tracks and maybe one or two aren't up to the quality of the rest.
Just get both, you won't regret it.
T&N isn't in the same league though there are 3-4 great songs on it. Everything else you can pretty much ignore, though Don's solo album is worth getting (no Lynch though), and then there's the first two Lynch Mob albums- plus Smoke & Mirrors from a couple of years ago. So much good music ;D

Big fan of Dokken too. I'm pretty fond of all 4 of their first albums to be honest. Not much else is really worth a listen IMO. The last one was pretty good actually and Erase the Slate with Reb has a few good songs too. The live DVD from that tour is great too, Reb does the songs justice.

First, I’ll say that all four songs were good, but not your best efforts by any means. I guess given the quality of what I’ve gotten from the four of you already, it’s unrealistic to expect every song be better than the last. I totally see how each of these gets the adrenaline flowing, but something just wasn’t quite in sync with what I was intending with the theme. Clearly that’s my fault in how I explained it though.
Match 1
Doc – Wuthering Heights/I Shall Not Yield
Holy crap, this one had prog, metal (power and speed), symphonic, and melodic elements all wrapped into one 6 minute and 42 second package. Impressive. At times it was fantastic, but there were a few moments that felt a little wonky. Really liked the little symphonic opening, transitioning into some nice speed metal, and the vocals were nice – very gritty and powerful. A lot of this reminded me of Blind Guardian. Pretty cool guitar solo – the dude shreds pretty hard. Really liked the second/dual solo.
King of Wolves – Dream Evil/In Flames You Burn
Ironic that this too was a melodic/speed metal track. Again with a slow start transitioning into some very strong power-metal. This had a great chorus. Great vocals, and the power chords were just right to provide that adrenaline rush. Was a little generic as you were worried about – not very different from the feel I get from bands like Rhapsody (with or without Fire) and Freedom Call.
Result: I Shall Not Yield felt it was trying to pack too much into it, and the time signature changes weren’t quite seamless. This could’ve been a solid power metal tune if it had just stayed the course, which the Dream Evil song did. Pound for pound, In Flames You Burn struck a stronger chord - literally and figuratively.
Match 2
Obscure – Darkology/Violent Vertigo
I was wondering if Darkology was gonna come out, being another project with Kelly Sundown as the lead vocalist (he sung on two of the tracks the good lady has used). This one falls in the middle of the other two, and it took me quite a few listens to warm up to it. I don’t think anything else can surpass my love for Obsessions, but this was definitely better than Section X. Really loved the chorus’s on this one especially, and Sundown’s voice is really hitting the mark with me. The rhythm section was suh-weeeeet! If not for the section where it slowed down at about the three minute mark, this would’ve hit the theme the best of the bunch. The drums in the instrumental section felt out of place for some reason.
Lonestar– Suicidal Tendencies/You Can’t Bring Me Down
Nice slow start, and loved the opening chord. At first it felt more like the kind of glam metal songs I loved from the 80s... then the main riff kicked in, and it was quite clear it was nothing like Glam. Great guitar action overall from a frantic punk/metal song. I liked the backing guitars/mini-solo’s most of all. Definitely something I see pumping anyone up – total mosh-pit vibe going on here. I admire you for leading with your heart, and not your head – not something I would’ve normally looked to, but it was a good tune... until the vocal rant at the end.
Result: Songs were somewhat the same stylistically ... great guitar work (melodies and solo’s), great hard main riff. Heavy and frantic, with a brief slow-down in the middle. So, had to go a layer deeper to figure out which I liked better. I also feel I must also point out a key hint in the OP that was missed:
The point of the theme's is to mix things up. Don't sacrifice song quality for the theme. If I think the song sucks, then it doesn't matter if it fits the theme perfectly. I still want music I will like, first and foremost.
As Nick somewhat chastised me when I submitted Sun City in his ‘must-have-a-black-member-in-the-band round’, “The song certainly could have appeal to certain groups, but I’m just not in that group”. The likelihood of me going back to Suicidal Tendencies is slim-to-none, and slim just left town. Also, I’m really digging Kelly Sundown, and this track got better with every listen. Lonestar, your heart betrayed your mind, and now you are 0-2 against the good Lady.

So, wolfking vs obscure in the finals. Two of the Internationalists vying to be the last one standing. Here's how we're going to roll ... Thunderdome style. Not sure if either of you remember a game that was played periodically on the forum pre-2009 crash (I don't recall it being played after that), but here's how it works. You both submit 3 songs, and tell me which order to listen to them in ... 1, 2, 3. The 1s go up against each other, as do the 2s and 3s. Better song wins each round. Essentially, it's best 2 out of 3. Got it? No rush on getting the songs in. To kickoff the final results, let me say that no matter who gets the title of Jingle.champ, I’m the real winner. 75 or so new tracks, only a handful that I didn’t like too much, all from different bands :tup. Boy-o-boy do I have a lot of new music on the ‘check-it-out’ radar. Thanks to all of you (even Nekov ;)) for a great experience in the last month. I’ll hand out some awards and honorable mentions and shit later, but for now, I’m sure you want to know how the dust settled. At least, two of you do.
Three VERY (and painfully) close rounds. I hate to have to judge, but such is the nature of this show.
Round 1
Lies/Starbreaker (wolf) vs The Years Ahead/Tomorrow’s Eve (obscure)
Both pulling from what has provided success in earlier rounds. Melodic-Metal from the mind of Magnus Karlsson from Kade, and a prog-metal concept album excerpt from Nem. Both great tunes. Real nice backing vocals and chorus on the Lies track - that chorus is VERY catchy, and has been in my head the last 24 hours. A very full sounding track with guitar licks that remind me of Jorn-project tracks (big surprise coming from Karlsson!!), and keyboards that reminded me a lot of Royal Hunt’s sound. Nice transitions from a smooth flowing feel to aggression. Loved the instrumental section. The Years Ahead also had a great keyboard arrangement surrounded by a very heavy main guitar riff (what else would one expect from the good Lady). I felt the other two songs sent earlier from concept albums stood on their own better; that this one really needs the story to go along with it - which I will be doing.
Verdict – Lies by a nose
Round 2
Ghost Prototype 1/Scar Symmetry (wolf) vs Killing My Dreams/Elysion (obscure)
Really liked the Scar Symmetry track. Great tune start to finish … almost. The growls didn't hurt this song (that much), but they didn’t help either. I remember reading someone’s advice to think of growls as just another instrument, so that’s what I did. Still couldn’t appreciate them :-\. Growls are a hit and miss for me, and in this instance, they missed. But otherwise, a really great song. Killing My Dreams was also a little risky with the female lead. Chick vocals can also be hit and miss for me … I love (LOVE) Tarja and have discovered Magali Lutyen thru this roulette, and love Floor Jansen in Star One. On the other hand, Sharon (Within Temptation), and Floor’s work in After Forever don’t do much for me. This track… scratched me right where I itch. Loved it. Sonically, the two songs were about as even in enjoyment as I could imagine, so the vocals determine which way I leaned.
Verdict – Killing My Dreams by that same nose.
Round 3
To Mend a Broken Heart/Eclipse (wolf) vs Not My Love 2/Tides of Man (obscure)
Well, neck and neck coming down the home stretch, and no, I didn’t plan for it to be this way. You two did a great job in helping me make this as dramatic as possible! Not sure if Jesse “The Body” Ventura was ever big ‘down under’, but several times it seemed as though Kade followed the “Win if you can, lose if you must, but always cheat” motto. This time, pulling something from Erik Martenssen (who also wrote one of my favorite albums last year – Mercury’s Down by Toby Hitchcock … and Kade - who introduced me to it - knew it). Very nice straight forward Melodic track. All the right elements… smooth vocals, soothing guitar riffs and runs, nice solo, and a rhythm section that just does enough to not steal too much attention. Felt a little generic to me, the production seemed a little flat (not in tone, just in overall umph), and the acoustic outro – while nice – felt out of place.
Not My Love 2 has Nem submitting a very unique and interesting metal song. Instantly, I was intrigued by the vocal harmonies, then the usual prog-metal riffage kicked in, which has been Nem’s signature sound this roulette. Tons of diversity in the vocals throughout the entire track – the high end of the vocals didn’t quite work for me at first, but I warmed up to them with every listen. I loved the guitar outro solo.
This was tough… these last two required a lot of listens to figure out which one I liked better – and I flopped back and forth a couple of times. The songs in the first two rounds, while very close, my gut told me which one I liked better right from the outset. These two … not so much. In the end …
Verdict: I had wanted to post last night and say ‘shit, we’re boarding, so I’ll have to finish this in the morning’ to prolong the suspense. Then, I was just gonna say that you’ll have to wait an hour or so - just so I can provide a bit of a cliff-hanger, and continue with the mind-fuck. But, since wolfie is wanting a little shut-eye, I will prolong no longer.
The third round winner is Not My Love 2, making obscure
Jingle.Champ
This was a tough decision, and honestly, if I had posted it last night, it was going to go the other way. Another listen on the plane ride home (and again this morning) reversed the decision.
6 awesome songs you two, and I'll be digging in to each of them a little more - even Scar Symmetry.

Nice to see an album I championed in the Melodic Rock/AOR thread getting some love- Blessed By A broken heart. Been blasting that this afternoon in the car.
Some great stuff on your list there- some good listening ahead for ya for sure.
Checking out the Epysode myself, not familiar with it at all. Already ordered the Presto Ballet from the roulette and got the Mandroid Echostar. Alot of this roulette I was already familiar with but it's always good to find something new.

To the beautiful winner and the gracious host who ran an exciting and well thought out roulette. Loved being a part of it, and even though I took a risk and it failed, I'm happy with my final decisions. Keep checking Scar Symmetry Chad, you never know, you might like it one day.
Also, I think it's funny the only awards I got were albums listened to and albums to purchase yet I was a finalist and almost took this thing out. Guess that shows the strength and consistency of my submissions throughout the roulette.
Also, I should have just sent three Karlsson songs for the finals. :lol I still had at least another 5 projects with him that I could have sent.
Anyway, again, great to be a part of this.

Yeah, blew my mind when I heard it back in 2005. I picked up the album immediately adn became a Karlsson fan boy ever since. Seriously love his song writing. Haven't heard from him still why he dropped off teh PF tour, hopefully everything is okay. He did contribute a solo for the new Harry Hess so, unless that was done quite some time ago, everything should be fine. Hopefully working on some new poject for Frontiers.
