Oh boy...
Btw, regarding Kilmer's statement of that he would have to get a haircut, if I remember recent photos of him there might be something else necessary (unless Top Gun 2 plays on a cruise ship, sorta like Speed 2)

No.

Kelly McGillis too?
-
Awesome!
I'm hoping it'll be along the lines of Maverick being an instructor and 'old school' and not really liking the new automated drones and stuff but something will require people to do something, maybe vs North Korea.
I'm also hoping they'll shoot as much of it 'for real' as possible.
-
Can he still be his wingman...........................................ANYTIME????
-
Oop. Oh no. :|
-
Dear Jesus God please no...

"Sure, it would be fun," he told MTV News. "I'd have to get a haircut, but anything for the role."
Considering Kilmer's sense of humor, it sounds like that statement was more of an acknowledgement of the weight he'd have to lose, since it's the most obvious of his changes since the eighties.

It'd be cool to see him get back in shape and be on Top Gun.

You can RIDE MY TAIL.

Iceman....I mean Snowman...........
"I feel the need.....the need for Boneva......."
-
I'm thinking it morphs into Top Secret. Tom Cruise is good in funny Cameos. Val you can do it!
-
Yeah... I'd rather see a Top Secret sequel than Top Gun. Some of these "revival's" look ok (see, Total Recall), but it's taking an old concept, and modernizing it. I can't see that happening with the same dudes 25 years later - especially given Val looks like the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man.
-
I don't think I will willingly watch a movie in theaters for awhile. There have been very few original ideas. It's getting fucking old
-
Will Val still fit in the cockpit?
-
Guys this has the potential to be not just bad, but hilariously awful. I, for one, am PUMPED.

What I don't get is, since the original Top Gun there have been actual WARS. Wars where making a sequel would be easier and make perfect sense. Why didn't they do that then? None of that inventing a Cold War scenario that was unlikely as hell even then, you have wars to set a sequel in. Why didn't anyone bite then?
-

holywood is making huge losses, they are making sequels and remakes they know will draw in money. they don't give a shit about originality.
-
I'm sorry, but after 26 years it's a remake not a sequel. :corn :puke:
-
...
The way I see it, there are two possibilities: either this is an extremely elaborate Rickroll, in which case it is one of the most awesome things anyone's ever done, or it is completely genuine, and therefore one of the stupidest ideas in the history of mankind.
-
i hope they clone 'Goose' ala Jurrasic Park style but he comes back and is all 'strange' and murderish like the kid Gauge was in 'Pet Cemetery'.
-
Man it would have been so sweet to get a proper GOOD action movie about dogfighting and everything surrounding being a modern day fighter pilot. Although from what i've heard it's more about drones. I just hope they make it gritty with real planes and aerial shots and less CGI unless it's portrait properly and feels real.

It's an enjoyable flick. Just don't go in expecting an all-time great.

Yea I don't think the movie has age that well. I just love the flight scenes, characters, music and of course for nostalgic reasons.

Not much is known about the movie, except for one thing: It will suck

"Sure, it would be fun," he told MTV News. "I'd have to get a haircut, but anything for the role."
Professor Hathaway: You know, when I first brought you into this school I thought you'd become another Einstein. And you were well on your way. And then?
Chris Knight: I got a haircut

I tried watching Top Gun a few months ago and turned it off when Cruise introduced himself as "Maverick" at the bar.
-
"Did your mother not like you or something?"
-
"Because I was inverted."
*Room laughs*
Kilmer will be fine for the film if it ever gets made. I'm a huge Top Gun fan. If the story is there, it'll work. I have no doubt Cruise and Kilmer will be good in it.
I'm just thankful they are not trying to do another Iron Eagle. They should have stopped after 1...
-
If the story is there, it'll work.
I think that was a typo. You probably meant to say "It there are enough cool action scenes, people will go see it."
-
I'm going to a con in October where Kilmer will be attending. Definitely having him sign my Tombstone blu-ray. That's not quite relevant, but I thought I'd share.
His problem now is the opposite of what it used to be: he needs to GAIN some weight. Post-cancer Val is not a healthy looking Val.
I think I saw a picture of him looking somewhat healthier a little more recently. He has to be feeling pretty good if he's down to visit cons.
Edit #2187:
He looks pretty good here at this picture from the convention's page.

A movie crew is currently aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier off the coast of Virginia filming flying sequences for the "Top Gun" sequel starring Tom Cruise, according to the US Navy.
Cruise and his fellow actors are not on board the Nimitz-class carrier at this time, a Navy official said.
"The Navy is supporting one shoot this week aboard USS Abraham Lincoln, per a Production Assistance Agreement signed by Paramount (Pictures) and the Department of Defense," service spokesperson Lt. Cdr. Daniel Day told CNN.

"Our priority will always be warfighting, and training combat-ready Naval aviation forces ... That being said, we believe we can support the film and simultaneously achieve training objectives," he said.
I'm sooo ready for this, hopefully it won't suck though. :lol
-
It won't suck. It'll have critics, because in this day and age, people shit can things just because they can. But after 32, almost 33 years, it'll be nice to see Pete Mitchell's story continue.
-
It won't suck.
That was basically what I thought when I heard Tesla were releasing an album in 2008 after a 4-year reprieve. And again in 2014. But... :dunno:
I don't really have expectations one way or the other. I hope it's decent. Not because I loved the original (I thought Iron Eagle was the better of the two). But simply because I'm old enough to be a sucker for reviving nostalgia for the '80s. And because I think Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer are really good actors. I'm firmly in "wait and see" mode.
-
Iron Eagle was the better of the two
CHAAAAAPPPPYYYYYY!!!!!
Iron Eagle was awesome.
Whether I see a Top Gun sequel is probably primarily a function of whether or not my wife wants to see it.
-
LOVED Iron Eagle. ha ha ha.
-
Never saw the first one, really have zero desire to.
-
...it'll be nice to see Pete Mitchell's story continue.
Of all the 80s movie icons whose story I'd like to see continue, Maverick is pretty low on the list. Chris Knight however... what could he possibly be doing in 2018?
Top Gun was a favorite of mine. I recall my mom not being happy with me watching the love scene, even though it is very tame. Tom Cruise is about as automatic as a movie star can be these days, and it will be good to see Val Kilmer back in the limelight after going so long without doing much worthwhile. He was a favorite actor of mine like 30 years ago.
Can't recall if I ever saw Iron Eagle.
-
Just for kicks: Goose's hot headed son at Top Gun school, Maverick in a Viper mentor role, Iceman dropping coffee mugs inside a radar tower.

Is Lazlo still winning the sweepstakes?
Did Jerry's house survive the popcorn?
Is Kent still a douche?
inquiring minds want to know!

All of this. Real Genius is one of my all time favorite comedies.
EDIT - Do you ever get the feeling that Val kindof resents his comedy performances? He never really speaks of them, and I haven't seen him do comedy in a very VERY long time. Even though he was really good at it.
-
I may be one of the few to really mark out over the motorcycle, but it was a memorable aspect of the first film.
In the sequel they will be using this sexy beast.
The Kawasaki Ninja H2, with a top speed of over 200 mph

I don't recall ever hearing Kilmer talk about any of his films. Honestly I don't recall ever seeing an interview with him ever. Weird. I just Wiki'ed him and saw his firtst two film credits are leading roles in Top Secret! and Real Genius. His third role was in Top Gun. That is quite the debut.
Also: "Kevin Spacey told James Lipton on Inside the Actors Studio that one of the turning points of his life was at a high school drama festival when he saw Kilmer and Mare Winningham perform a scene from The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie... and Spacey said he went to Juilliard because Kilmer did. Kilmer was at that time the youngest person ever admitted to Juilliard." Maybe not good for the resume in the #MeToo generation, but having inspired a two-time Oscar winner to take up acting would be a nice thing to bring up in parties.

Not a comedy, per se, but there's a lot of humor in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.

Maybe Meg Ryan could do a cameo as a sales rep for Botox.

You're right. It didn't suck, but I was totally underwhelmed by the story. Of course it had good flying and aero-acrobatic action, but as a sequel, I think it fell way short of it's predecessor.

You dug up my quote (and this thread) from five years ago, just to quote me and say this? :lol
Ummm...why?
I liked Maverick a lot. It was good closure for me as a Top Gun fan. Story was solid. Not spectacular, but the first one's story wasn't spectacular either. Both are fun films, and I really enjoyed seeing Maverick stick it to the drone people. (Which is very accurate.) The closure with Iceman...not gonna lie, makes me tear up every time.
-
I’d say the sequel, while not an amazing film, was way better than it needed to be and I’d say was better than the original. If not as fun.
-
Maverick is about a hundred times better than the first imo.
-
I definitely thought the sequel was better than the original.
-
Haven't seen either...never really had an urge to. :dunno:

I can't imagine being a 47 year old in 2023 and watching Top Gun for the first time. Likewise, I cannot imagine being a kid in the late 80s and never seeing Top Gun.
This 47 year in 2023 thought Top Gun Maverick is a fantastic film. It should have received some honorary Oscar for making it fun to go to the cinema again after Covid.
-
That would be a good thread. Movies and TV shows you won't watch out of principle.
I can't think of any I wouldn't watch at all out of principle.
An easier list for me would be "Movies and TV shows you won't watch EVER AGAIN out of principle."

Well, some are fun for not ever wanting to watch a film. Or hate for that matter. I get what you're saying though. I have a ton of films like that for so many different reasons.

It is interesting to see how PetFish and Indiscipline predicted some plot points. Not that they were too risky a guesses!
