Title: 2012-07-18/19 - Paramount Theater - Huntington, NY

So, anything special planned for these shows do you think?

I can't imagine that there isn't something special planned--I mean two nights at one venue, I smell a treat!

I hope they announce something about these two shows and whether something special will be done or if they will just be regular shows.  The PNC show is much more convenient for me and I'm leaning towards that one.  But I just can't imagine that they don't have something special planned for these shows.  I've never been there but it seems like a small venue for what DT is used to these days, which is kinda cool although if it's general admission I wouldn't be too crazy about that.  Guess we'll just have to wait and see if they say anything about it.

INB4 some bitch after the show that the things they did aren't as cool or special as the things they supposedly would have done had Portnoy still been in the band.

Those would be perfect to film for the next DVD. But wouldn't the band announce it so that fans can plan to fly in? So possibly the DVD won't be filmed there...

These are going to be the DVD shows obviously and I'm so glad they chose NY for them.
Considering JP is probably going to manage the set lists; I think both nights are going to have 70% similar songs and of course that pays off for the editing and the montage of the final product, and I expect the couple extra songs to be bonus footage on the DVD. I prefer that approach, just like I prefer JP's fixed set lists with minor rotations, it's fair and establishes performance perfection.
I say DVD but I actually want a BluRay and I want it to the standard of the Porcupine Tree's Anesthetize BluRay in terms of audio and video quality, superb audio mixing and surround features. I want the direction and the editing to be similar to that of Budokhan DVD.
I'd also like a documentary that features a tour of the set and how the idea for the 3 cubes came together, the videos that play with each song, etc.
I want multi angle camera options on BiTS, Outcry, BAI and at least 2 more songs.
I'd like to have subtitles but it's not a make or break feature.
And last but not least I want the artwork to be connected to that of ADToE and I want the DVD to include all ADToE songs that was played on this tour. I just really want that release to mark and document this great era that I'm enjoying so much.

This venue seems to be too small for a DVD

It has a capacity of 1,500.  Maybe the size is why they're doing two nights there?  It's got a GA floor plus mezzanine at the back and balconies on each side.

It's a brand new, BEAUTIFUL venue.  Just opened up a few months ago.

I'm so psyched for this.  The venue is literally within walking distance from my apartment.

You're leaving Long Island?  A Long Island without ZeppelinDT is like a Dream Theater without Mike Portnoy.

These two shows instantly become the highlight of my summer.  I'm so excited, and I just can't hide it.

Not definite.  But if I did move, the furthest I'd go would be Brooklyn.  I'm looking for a new job, and while I'd prefer to stay out here, I have to consider looking in the city too.  But if I took a city job I don't know if I'd wanna do that commute every day.

That's quite the distance.  :)

I have traveled to NEARFest and a few other places for shows, so for me it isn't a big deal.  This will be the furthest I've traveled to see Dream Theater though.  Usually they play somewhere near where I live.  And I figured if I'm travelling to see them I might as well see two shows.  If something special happens at these shows, all the better.  And if not I'm sure they will be great shows anyway. :)

I'd be game for meeting up with others prior to the show.

I hope I'm not the only one waiting on ticketmaster's "working page" for 15 minutes going now. I've never ever had to wait this long to see what tickets I'm going to get. Anybody else having an issue?

EDIT-Nevermind. Finally got through. The waiting time kept fluctuating from 15 to 13 to 6 and back and forth for like 20 minutes.

Me too.  Ridiculous.  I'm at work and i walked away because of the 15 minute wait and when i got back, the tickets they suggested expired.  Ugh.

I've never seen this 15-minute thing before.  Usually, ticket choices pop right up.

Yeah exactly. I'm at work, too, and I had stuff to do but I didn't want to pry my eyes away from the "working" screen because I know the expiration window is like 2 minutes.

Even for small venues that weren't DT, I've always had ticket selections show up within 30 seconds. Weird.

That happens sometimes when there's a larger show being sold at the same time.  A couple of months ago it happened when there was a Springsteen show going on sale.  I was trying to tickets for another show, but the Springsteen show created so much scalper traffic that it caused problems with their system.

Btw - I've sent a couple of messages to the Paramount to figure out the seating situation.  It makes no sense to me.  Ticketmaster seems to be selling both GA floor tickets and Floor seating tickets.  My suspicion is that the GA "Main Floor" tickets aren't actually on the floor.  I believe they have a second, small standing room section behind the mezzanine seats.  Hopefully I'll get a response.  If not I might just walk down to the box office tomorrow to get an answer.

I was also a bit confused, so I mailed The Paramount and here is what they wrote back

Thank you for your email and your interest in The Paramount.
The General Admission area for this show is split. From the stage back are rows A-L. Behind those seats will be standing room only.
Please contact the box office to be clear as to what kind of ticket you purchased. Since you selected standing room only, you should be fine, GA tickets will always say there is a seat.
You can contact them directly from 12pm-6pm daily and until 9pm on show nights at 631 673 7300 ex 350.

Thanks, FrostBite.  So the first 12 rows (A-L) are seated.  Behind those 12 rows is standing room.  That's so weird.  Why not just make it all standing?  They must be filming something and want the front-area fans to be more organized or something.

Yeah, I've been to Paramount a few times, but it's always been a standing room only floor.  I've never seen it with seats on the floor.  Kinda curious about how it'll work.  I guess this means they're setting up 12 rows of seats with a standing room section behind the seats.  Very strange.

Hmm. The venue has capacity of 1,500 out of them 459 are balcony/loge seats that leaves 1041 on main floor. 315 of the 1041 are seated which mean that 726 are standing on less than half the floor. Its gonna be pretty crowded back there. Had it been any other band I would have said screw the 2x66$ I'm staying in denmark, but its not. Its DreamTheater :heart so I have go

I simply counted the seats from the plans found here https://www.paramountny.com/venue/
The numbers may not 100% accurate, but I think pretty close

I'm not sure how accurate that is.  I don't think either of those seating charts are what's being used for the show.  It also doesn't show the capacity of the Skybar, which looks like it could be at least a couple of hundred.  (Although I've never actually been up to that part of the venue, so I don't know for sure.

Title: Tickets to giveaway
Post by: FrostbiteZ on June 28, 2012, 03:07:13 AM
I have decided to give away my GA ticket for both Huntington dates 18-19th of july. I bought them cause I thought that GA would be in front of the stage. I later learned that they are not, so I also bought seated tickets for both dates cause I wanted to get a bit closer :)

I could try and sell them, but it seems that there is no high demand for DT tickets, seeing that many of the second leg dates are far from sold out.

So I rather give them away and make some fans happy

I have to collect them at the box office, so thats where I will hand them over

So if you are interested or know someone who could be. Then email me the date you are interested in + include your DTF username. If I get more requests on the same date I will let a friend draw the lucky one.

I will mail the lucky ones with details regarding the pickup

The offer runs till tuesday the 3rd of july 15:00 pm

Well, now that they've announced that the DVD shows are the ones in Argentina, I'm not expecting anything special for this show.

Although.... I still have a faint hope in my mind that they will do I&W on the second night and record it as a bonus feature for the upcoming DVD.

Unless maybe they're using this two-night stand as a sort of rehearsal for the DVD nights?

Something tells me one of these two nights they'll play ADTOE in it's entirety by CD tracklisting order but they only thing shooting that theory down is that they probably don't have a plan B on what to open with if BitS was pushed back in the set list.

Well, they have been playing a lot of strong openers: PMU, Metropolis, As I Am, Root. I think they will find a suitable way to open the shows ;) Probably PMU would be the best, beginning ex abrupto just after Dream Is Collapsing collapses  :lol

wasteland I see what you're saying and it would work but I believe nothing is gonna have the same impact as Dream is Collapsing followed by the BiTS intro, it just hypnotizes the audience into chills that escalates into major excitement. I don't remember blinking from the first moment in DiC until the lights fall on JP playing the first riff. That is exactly 4 minutes of trance I felt on all 4 ADTOE shows I've been to and I don't think it was just me.
DT figures a lot of fan are going to both concerts but I'm thinking they wouldn't risk the new audience and reviewers missing out on this production. But then again DT rarely cares about stuff like that and might do it anyway.

i think anything can follow dream is collapsing. they start the BiTS intro tape right after, so starting a song in its place would be cool having inception as the direct intro, rather that first of 2

Well, they could play ADTOE to start the show, and swap BITS with OTBOA. Not very clean, but it saves goat and cabbage

Ditto. The consensus here seems to be there's no way in hell this will happen right? I paid top dollar for Row B seats both of these nights, so I will definitely feel cheated if I dropped over $200 to hear the same set list twice.

Just want to add,  isn't this the first tour in a long time (possibly ever?) where they haven't been switching up a couple songs every night? I'm used to DT having the "A and B" set list thing, but I'm seeing the same exact set list every night over on setlist.fm...

I believe its the first tour with a primarily static setlist since Jordan joined the band in 1999.

Regardless that they are playing on the 18th as well as the 19th, i will be dissapointed if they dont open with BITS since i only have a ticket to the 19th  :-\ we'll just have to wait and find out i guess, BITS and LNF are the main two songs i would like to see. A whole album cover would be really cool to see though!

Maybe I am living in the past, and there is basically no chance this is happening, but damn would I love to see Scenes from a Memory played all the way through again (lucky enough to have caught this twice at Roseland back in 2000, one was for the DVD filming).

It's funny my friend and I saw them play that entire album 3 times during the SFaM tours, but even so I was just saying to my friend the other night at PNC how I doubt it would ever happen unless it was an anniversary or something but I would LOVE to see SFaM played in it's entirety again.

That's what I'm afraid of! You'd think they would plan something special for ONE of the nights, at very least switch up a couple songs. I guess no way to know until we go!!!

Side note: Anyone know what time Crimson Prokekct has been starting? Tickets say 8 pm but I have an itchy feeling that if we walk in at 8 CP will already be on/done...

I was sort of hoping the second night would be Images & Words in its entirety, since it's the 20th anniversary and all. I know one of the Texas shows added PMU and Another Day (since it was the specific date of the anniversary), but I'd really like to hear the whole thing.

In all honesty, I just want them to play Learning to Live. I've seen them live in NY for every show (and sometimes double shows) since like 2004, around 11 in total, and I haven't heard it once. Metropolis is one of my favorites as well, but they've played it at least half the times I've seen them.

Not to mention they're playing the same venue two nights in a row. They're going to definitely need to switch some things up between tonight's show and tomorrow's show.

Its just a theory, but could we possibly see some newer tunes played tonight or tomorrow that could make it to the DVD filming next month?

Well, just made it to NY this morning for these 2 shows. This is my 3rd visit to NY, all of them to see DT (RCMH & MSG being the other 2), once from Puerto Rico and twice from Florida. I thought they were going to record the DVD tonight, but of course, that's not going to happen. I have no idea why they booked two nights, but practice for the DVD makes sense (maybe they'll even play a whole album for the second night, hopefully one of theirs and not a cover).

Don't hold your breath on them playing a whole album.  That was driven by MP and I just don't think the current band would have interest in doing that.  Really doesn't make sense why they booked two nights there.  They just did an entire North America tour so why would they need two nights in the same venue to warm up for a DVD?

Don't hold your breath on them playing a whole album.  That was driven by MP and I just don't think the current band would have interest in doing that.  Really doesn't make sense why they booked two nights there.  They just did an entire North America tour so why would they need two nights in the same venue to warm up for a DVD?
JP has said in a recent interview that they are willing to play the entire ADTOE on the DVD. So, if they're warming up for the DVD with these two nights in NYC, then it's certainly possible for the entire ADTOE album to be played. However, I will agree with you if people were wanting any other full album to be performed. I believe ADTOE is the only one with a full chance at this point (mostly because JP expressed his interest in doing that eventually and since MM already has performed the entire album live over two tours).

POSSIBLE SPOILERS

I believe we'll see some LTE played either tonight or tomorrow.

It seems so. At least since 8V

Because they're probably playing more/different songs for the DVD shows?

Well of course if that is the case that would make sense.  I guess in a couple of days we will know for sure.

I don't think these 2 night in NY has anything to do with rehearsing for the filming of the concerts in South America. They have two weeks after the Jersey show to get ready for the SA tour. They may have a little something up their sleeve for the second night.  Someone posted they heard them jamming an LTE song during soundcheck in Washington?  I believe it was in Washington. Anyway, we will know soon enough.

Absolutely. Prophets of War wasn't played until the touring for Black Clouds, and during the Black Clouds legs The Shattered Fortress and The Best of Times were never performed.

I definitely think them playing LTE is a huge possibility...  but do you really need two nights at the same venue for that to happen?  If it is in fact that they have something up their sleeve, I would think it will be bigger than that.

OKAY so I have ONE TICKET FOR SALE to the Thursday, July 19th show. It is one of the up close seats, Section 101, Row G, on the right side close to Petrucci. Price is $107 to be paid asap via PayPal. Email me at mike@mikerood.com

Don't need the ticket, already set for both shows. But did stop by your site and played the tunes. Damned good stuff! Need to hear more, so I placed an order...

Ahhh you're Marc! Thanks again for picking up a copy of the cd!

What's the word on meeting up before hand on Thursday everybody??

For anyone not there, LaBrie managed to do this again https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2_RuBLCPPjk. Some roadie came out and threw a (rag?) on the floor in disgust, LaBrie tried to keep going but Petrucci had a "no we need to scrap this" look on his face, and they re-did the section. To be fair, that break is really weird.

Excellent show. Crimson Projekct was phenomenal, made me really wish I had seen their headlining show at Beekman Beer Garden on Tues, but 3 shows in a row during a work week was just too much for me to handle right now. I've seen King Crimson once (back in 08) and this was almost as good. You definitely do notice that Fripp isn't there, but still what a phenomenal show. Belew and Levin are just gods.

I had second row/right side seats, which were awesome. My part of the row had no seats in row A, so I was essentially first row directly in front of Petrucci! My first time at the Paramount and I was not disappointed. Venue is nice and new, sound was very loud, though I felt it was a little distorted at times, not as clear as the Best Buy Theater (I only compare these two because they're similar in size, layout, and BB Theater is only a few years old). Up front where I was it was SO goddamn loud though. Glad I brought earplugs (I don't usually, but knowing I was that close I had a feeling I'd need them).

As far as the set list, I can't really say anything that hasn't been said in other threads. It's a decent cross-section of most of the albums. I love the songs from ADToE. Glad to see Lost Not Forgotten, as that's my favorite song from the album and they didn't play it last time around. Personally I'm a bigger fan of all the pre-ToT albums, so I would've liked to hear more older stuff (specifically from IaW, Awake and SfaM). But hey, this band has 11 studio albums so I can't complain. Very cool hearing Fortune in Lies (I don't think I've ever seen them play that) and The Dark Eternal Night (my fav track from SC, also never seen that one). Excited for tonight, but I am really really hoping they switch up the set list.

Funny side note: There was a drunken idiot dancing/stumbling around in front of my seats for a few songs, and I knew he was going to be an issue. Aside from bumping into myself and the rest of my party, he was either farting every few minutes or crapped his pants, judging by the smell. Security did nothing about him, but an EMT did take notice and actually brought him a folding chair to sit down and take a breather (pretty nice if you ask me, instead of just tossing him or telling him to get back into the GA area). Of course he did stand up again and start his swaying routine, and eventually pissed himself. That's right, puddle on the floor, stain on the pants pissed himself. He got tossed. And the janitor came and performed the only mop solo I've ever seen at a DT show.

Yeah I was up behind the engineers in the mezzanine section and the sound was nearly unbearable.  When we came it was maybe half way through Crimson Projekts set and I was like "jesus the sound is way too loud for this kind of music" but I figured when DT came on it would be smooth and balanced. Nope, all the levels were ear bleedingly loud.  You could hear everything pretty clearly but it was more of a wall of noise.  I dont think it was DT's fault, it was probably the audio engineers maybe thinking they would just crank the music because they were a "metal" band. But who knows, I dont know how getting a show's venue/audio levels set up.  Maybe it was just where I was sitting, but that was probably the first time I've seen DT where the sound wasn't balanced that well.

Other than that, it was a great show and of course they were spot on for nearly the entire show. This was my 8th time seeing them and they never disappoint. :tup

BTW, there was a guy with the audio engineers with a video camera/tripod setup filming only the DT show, and I wonder if there were others at different spots in the theater, so I'm wondering if they are filming these shows for DVD/blu ray.  That'd be cool.

We saw the shows last week in Richmond and DC. The volume at those shows was fine. For me anyway. I had ear plugs, but didn't have to use them. From where my position was, center about 15-20 feet from the stage at both shows, I could even hear Myungs bass. I have read that others could not hear him. My ears weren't even ringing after the show. Maybe it's just where I was standing.  Anyway, hope you guys get some surprises tonight. Wish I was there with yall!

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought it was too loud - I thought maybe I was getting too sensitive in my old age!

I started the night in section 201 in the left balcony, but the crew in the "owners box" stood right at the rail and blocked the view for everyone in my area. I wasn't getting a good balance of sound anyway, so I moved to the upper mez center, and while the balance was better the distortion from the volume really annoyed me. My ears actually hurt when I took the plugs out.

I never thought I'd do it but the sound bothered me so much I left before the end. Did they give any indication that tonight's set list would be any different? I can't pinpoint why, but I was getting the impression that they're a bit tired and dug in to this lineup, and that tonight will be more of the same. Does anyone think the sound will be better tonight? I've got front row seats in 201 for tonight, but I don't think I'm going to go if the sound is as off as it was last night. Someone please convince me to have faith!

Not really.  I wear earplugs at most show these days.  But I guess it depends on what kind of earplugs you've got.  I find that the cheap generic ones destroy sound quality, but if you've got decent ones all it does is lower the volume without really effecting the sound.

I doubt that's the case. They probably used the camera to broadcast close up shots on the cubes during the solo sections. The Columbus and Cleveland shows both had a guy with a camera/tripod near the mixing board.

That's how I feel, although I said that over on the MP forum a while back and was shocked to find that I was in the minority in feeling like they are not a loud band.  The PNC show was absolutely perfect as far as volume and sound quality IMO.  The one band for me which I think it's absolutely ridiculous how loud they play is Symphony X.  I went to one of their shows once and honestly had rining in my ears for a week afterwards.

Annoying. There are parking lots around the area, but when I got there yesterday they were completely full, at least the close ones, you'll have to walk like 5 minutes from one.  I parked in a lot near a Chase bank and this Thai place on New York Ave

Yeah, this was the first time I've seen Dream Theater with sound that was way too loud. So I'm wondering if its something to do with the venue or whoever is controlling the audio levels there.

Any recommendations re: "good earplugs"? I bought a pair at a music store that sound better than the average foam ones, but I hate the way they feel in my ear. They're rubber and have a little hole that leads to a filter I guess and are kind of ribbed on the part that is inserted into your ear. The foam ones feel way better in my ear but, as you said, kinda destroy the sound quality.

I arrived at 8PM and found plenty of parking along the side streets right near the venue. Twas not a problem. And the show WAS loud, a bit too loud IMO. I wore my plugs for everything except Surrounded and Spirit. And still had a little ringing when I left. I thought John Myung was crazy on last night, and due to the dynamics of the room you could actually hear individual notes. Awesomely good. I find that he sounds best in the smaller theaters. Looking forward to tonight.

Starbucks is very close to the venue. There is also a pizza place across the street that was pretty good. Actually Huntington is a great place for a show. Lots of food and drink within a short walk to the venue.

Also, keep in mind that DT posted on Facebook a pic of Adrian B. and JP practising something. So I anticipate more than just Paradigm Shift in the set tonight.

So did Crimson Projekct play the same thing as the first night. DT should start in 10 mins. Could be wrong, as start times aren't always set.

The Root of All Evil was swapped out for Paradigm Shift (with Tony Levin of course) and A Fortune in Lies was swapped out for To Live Forever (a very random selection.) Instead of Metropolis for the encore they did a group performance of 21st Century Schizoid Man with members of the Crimson Projekct.

Crimson ProjeKCt swapped out Elephant Talk and played Sleepless instead.

They played the version recorded around Awake (with the newer verse at the end).  No extended jam in the end.

All in all I enjoyed both nights.  DT was definitely better tonight than last night.  Though I did enjoy aspects of both nights.  Definitely worth the trip out here to see these shows!

Yeah, definitely bring earplugs.  It was CRAZY loud.  Much louder than any other show I've seen at The Paramount.

I'm quite surprised to hear this. I've been to many DT shows and I've never found them to be a loud live band.

I agree.  I've seen them 39 times.  Last night's show was almost certainly the loudest.  The only other one that even came close was the one-off headlining show in Massachusetts that they played during the Maiden tour.

Not really.  I wear earplugs at most show these days.  But I guess it depends on what kind of earplugs you've got.  I find that the cheap generic ones destroy sound quality, but if you've got decent ones all it does is lower the volume without really effecting the sound.

These are the ones I use -

https://www.amazon.com/Etymotic-Research-ETYPlug-Protection-Earplugs/dp/B0044DEETC/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1342760029&sr=8-6&keywords=earplugs

They're not exactly high end, but they're pretty good for the price.  To get real top quality ones you're talking big dollars.
And I don't find comfort an issue at all.  At first I didn't really like the way they felt, but I got used to that pretty quickly.

Well, TLF is one of my favourite songs, but not so much without the ending crazyness. Still a great song and a GREAT event to see it coming back after eight years (last time, Wallingford 04). I hope it makes the DVD.

Of course I hope this show was bootleged, and I have the feeling that the band itself might have made sure it happened ;) Still, I'd like to have an audience recording too  :tup

It's quite possibly venue related.  Every time I've seen them at the Paramount in Denver they have been incredibly loud shows.  One time in particular I was wishing I had brought my earplugs as my ears were ringing all the next day.  But when I've seen them at outdoor venues in Colorado (Red Rocks, Pepsi Center parking lot) they weren't that bad.

(And, for the record, I'm aware of the spelling... I was just typing from my phone and didn't feel like manually overriding the autocorrect :P)
I wasn't really commenting on the spelling at all.  :)  I just capitalized like I've normally seen it capitalized in the past.

Can't understand some comments about the changes in the setlist.
Sure, if you've seen DT many times you've probably heard those tunes before (except for the KC cover).
In that case I can understand your lack of interest, so to speak.
But for the rest of the audience it should've been quite a treat.
I personally would have enjoyed every moment, both because of the surprise and the songs they played.

I'm a bit new to this forum so I haven't figured out nearly any of the insider jokes and stuff etc...  But when I saw DT in Richmond, I was fairly confident JP was actually singing the parts MP used to sing.  I heard a difference.  Maybe it was synthetic, but I didn't get the notion that it lip synchonization.

not all the backing vocals, just a couple parts of songs (grotesque creatures battle etc. in TDEN, and War Inside My Head sounded eerily like MP) i heard MP's voice and there were times when JP was late to get to the mic. i could careless either way, i just know JP's singing voice and he does actually sing for other songs, just those parts were different

Very cool that they threw in some surprises for this show.  To Live Forever is a pretty sweet switch out and the other two songs were great additions.  My only thing is... did you really need to stay in the same venue two nights in a row to essentially play the same set list with 3 songs switched out though?

NY is a big audience for DT, it makes perfect sense that they would play the same venue several times here.  Regardless of setlist.

Personally, my hope would be that they take the vast majority of songs from this tour that do not make it on the DVD, and compile a Ytsejam release that, in essence, is a supplement to the official DVD representing "the rest of the tour."  So, in other words, let's say hypothetically that there are 35 songs played on the tour entire tour, from the very first warmup show to the end, and that 20 of those songs end up on the official DVD.  It would be awesome if performances of the other 15 from various shows end up on a Ytsejam release.

Maybe... but I've seen a bunch of shows at that venue, and DT was by far the loudest.  Usually the sound there is pretty good.

but  to the loudmouth in the leopard button-up shirt who was standing between the 3rd row seats in the aisle, may you burn in hell. dude was having a full screaming conversation with his buddy (completely irelevant to DT/LTE) during paradigm shift . i doubt its anyone on here cause he probably cant work a computer.

Yeah, there were a few of those.  Some dude near met kept screaming out "Centurion!" and "King's Park".  I wanted to punch him.

jordan also had some interesting studded boots

Lol... he sure did.  I was right in front of him all night.  Couldn't take my eyes off those things.

Nothing better than adding a nice B-side to the setlist.
Wish they'd do one of the FII B-sides (https://msnsmileys.net/d/smileys/Drool/Drool_7.gif)

I'd settle for some A sides... like maybe Anna Lee :)

i have no problem with the backing vocal tracks, its just kinda funny to see JP miming them with MP's voice coming out of the speakers. i wonder if MP knows

I could be wrong, but I was under the impression that JP was singing his lines on top of the MP lines, rather than just "miming" them...

not all the backing vocals, just a couple parts of songs (grotesque creatures battle etc. in TDEN, and War Inside My Head sounded eerily like MP) i heard MP's voice and there were times when JP was late to get to the mic. i could careless either way, i just know JP's singing voice and he does actually sing for other songs, just those parts were different
I don't remember hearing MP's vocals at all when i saw them in Columbus and Cleveland, although I could have missed them being as excited as I was seeing them play. JP definitely did sing his parts, though. I could hear his voice clear as day, and he has improved his backing vocals tremendously.

Title: Paramount Theater - Huntington, NY - Show and aftershow report
Post by: Major Thirteenth on July 20, 2012, 12:23:30 PM
Well the show was fantastic as expected. I decided to watch the show from the worst seats in the house. Back row center. It turned out these were far better seats than the mezzanine seats in the boxes overlooking the stage. Also, there were a million guests and I really wanted to concentrate on the music rather than talking and listening to commentary.

So I basically watched the show alone and loved it. You really get a sense of the entire performance, including the light show, when you sit at the back. Also, the volume is slightly less, basically to what I consider normal Dream Theater levels: loud, but not insane.

Loved the surprises, loved Paradigm Shift (which they played a bit up tempo if you can believe it), loved the finale. Everybody was playing with extra energy, probably because they were anticipating the surprises. Very fun.

The aftershow started in catering, and many guests filed in, along with the band after they cooled down a bit. Anybody a Yankee fan? Bernie Williams strolled in and he is a huge DT fan and a huge John Petrucci fan. I also happen to be a Yankee fan and was a very avid fan during all of Bernie's career. He hung out with John mostly and I got to shake his hand and say hello. John asked him how his music thing was going and he answered rather philosophically, and at one point added "Well, there are no shortcuts in the music business", hinting at how difficult it is to have music as a career. Mike Mangini stopped by and joined the conversation. He was as gracious and cheerful as could be expected (he hates the Yankees of course!).

The aftershow than got moved from catering to the Founders Room, as it is called. Basically a beautiful lounge with couches and coffee tables and a bar and room to mill about. Unfortunately due to the number of guests, it was packed. But still, a very nice space. This whole club is fantastic. I would be happy to see any band here in the future. Really nice. It was apparently an Imax theater in its last iteration. I spoke to two of the club owners and they were so stoked to have Dream Theater playing their club. They were really happy about the turnout and the fans and how it all went down. One of the owners said he got involved and built the club specifically to attract and book quality musical acts like Dream Theater.

Bernie hung out for awhile but left after a short time, as he was getting a bit hounded by fanboys wanting photo ops. He was very gracious though despite obviously not being super thrilled.

All in all a great show and a great night!

It was apparently an Imax theater in its last iteration.

It was actually a concert venue called IMAC (Inter-Media Arts Center).  They had lots of jazz type bands playing there.  I saw Al DiMeola there a few years ago.  It was totally different though... it was a fully seated venue.  They basically completely gutted it then re-did it.

And before that I think it was a movie theater back in the 70's.

Maybe I'm wrong, but it doesn't sound like an aftershow in NY would be much fun.  I mean, the atmosphere would be great since it's the home town and all.  But in terms of just getting to hang out and chat with the band, it seems like it would be difficult just because of the sheer amount of people who would be there, and the band wanting to try to get around and talk to most of them.

Ok here is my review... Coming from the seeing them saturday to this was very disappointing. Their performance was fantastic of course and i loved that they add LTE and TLF. Was a real treat. But the venue's acoustic were really bad. It kind of ruined the show for me. I mean i can enjoy it because i know all the music and notes in my head but my friend doesn't and he said he couldn't make it about 70 percent of the music due to poor acoustics. i did notice myself "filling in the blanks" mentally with the music. I'll never understand why people make venues out of brick and concrete with no acoustical treatment. During the heavier songs it was REALLY difficult to hear the band clearly. I wad dead center about 50 feet from the stage, so i should have had excellent sound.

Saturday night was the exact opposite. At PNC the sound was fantastic and that was one of the best DT shows i've been to in a while. I will not be going back to that venue again.

Where in the venue were you?  The sound on Wednesday night wasn't so great, but I thought the sound last night was decent.  Although, in my experience, the sound at that venue is generally much better than it was for these DT shows.  I've seen at least 5 or 6 shows there since it opened last year. I'm not really sure what caused the sound to be bad, but I don't think it was the venue acoustics.

I was dead center right behind the seats standing up. I had optimal position for sound. The acoustics are very bad there. Brick and concrete and no treatment is a recipe for bad sound.

I guess.  All I know is that I've seen a bunch of shows there, and the sound for DT was significantly worse than the sound at any other show I've seen there.  No idea why that was.

Absolutely correct. If you are a fan and want to meet the boys and chat and actually have them listen to you and interact, choose an out of the way venue where there is no family and no record labels or management. NY shows are very hectic, just due to the sheer numbers. The aftershow was festive and all but for me it dragged and I decided an interesting diversion would be to get the car (I drove family members in and dropped them off at the front and parked far far away) and park it closer for our eventual exit. I figured I could kill 20 minutes doing that. Then I went back to the aftershow and found a nice leather couch to sit on and basically I almost fell asleep until someone gave me orange sections to eat. Man I haven't had oranges in quite a while. Very tasty. That woke me up long enough to make it to the end of the aftershow and the drive home.

Also had the pleasure of talking to Tony Levin for awhile. Very engaging and thoughtful guy, and a quintessential musician. Their booking agent just stuck in a last minute gig in Syracuse on to their itinerary, so it's up to Syracuse then back down to NJ for the Ceasar's show. Ouch! Adrian Belew is also a fun person to hang around with. Very infecting sense of humor, much like Mike Mangini.

I got used to it, and you can find a spot that sounds good if you shop. However you are correct. The walls were exposed brick and the ceiling was concrete. So there were probably standing waves all over the place. They need some bass traps on the wall and some other room treatments. I am going to bring this to the attention of the club owners. They do want to perfect the hall, and feedback like this will probably help them. They've got the basics down, they just need to tune the room a bit. It still wasn't that bad, but I can "fill in the blanks" cause i know the songs. A first timer could get lost in the maze...

At one point I was standing next to JP as he discussed the acoustics with one of the club owners and he said he was getting some bounce back from the PA system that was able to overwhelm his IEMs and made playing a little challenging until he got used to it. Mike Mangini made a similar comment.

Was in in the 7th row right in front of Myung -- didn't see any DTFers but apparently I was spotted :)

Anyone over there see the super hot girl dancing front left? Looked like a porn star. I was surprised by how many females were at the show -- never seen so many at a DT show.

A little disappointed that they only changed 3 songs, but maybe that's because I don't know King Crimson.

I also wonder if MP is pissed of that they played a whole LTE song....with Levin no less.

Also, I will be really disappointed if the DVD shows are the same set as these shows.

Pretty much anything farther than Slovenia is too far for me, mostly for financial reasons. I've only been out of the country once, and that was on a school trip two years ago. Save of that, haven't actually been anywhere on any vacation for the past... 8 years? *gloom cookie*

Why would the setlist for the DVD be like this one, though? Did I miss any important speculations?

i think it's safe to say he's pissed about most things DT-related. but someone already made the point that DT has played a bunch of LTE with JM in place of Levin. so whatevs

Nope actually. Just because DT gave  two night concert in the same place we tend to think what if they would do the same thing for DVD. But I think it seems unlikely. Before these concerts DT has 2 weeks to practice and add new songs to setlist. Not expect major changing but at least 5-6 songs, plus encore could be different each night.

Not bad, dude - too bad you had that tall dude to the immediate right of you.  Would've liked to have seen more panning to Petrucci's side of the stage/more panning out.

Still really cool though. :)

MP never played the hi hat/cymbals parts in the drum solos before the bass solo in Metropolis. Omitting parts. It happens.

Those are overdubs on the CD. Awesome that MM plays them though.

Also way to completely miss my point. I have no idea why so many of you are so defensive of MM that you have to completely dismiss my criticism at all costs.

I don't think people are "dismissing your criticisms at all costs."  I think people are just figuratively rolling their eyes at your criticisms because most of us don't care and don't understand why you can't resist the urge to bring it up constantly.

Fair enough, I guess criticisms can be brought up once and then dropped, never to be mentioned again. I assume the same rule of only mentioning things once or twice doesn't apply to praises. But I shall comply anyway. I won't mention it again, you have my word.

I didn't say you couldn't bring it up after "once or twice," and mellowdramatically exaggerating the point doesn't help.  But the reaction many have had to your criticism should indicate that most don't consider it worth discussion.  So at that point, to keep bringing it up is just distracting and annoying.

If Adami (I don't if he is or not) plays drum it's perfectly natural that it bothers him so much. But as a listener, I don't even catch the difference.  :lol

Gotta say I completely agree with Adami about the hi hat thing, it bothers me too. Mangini is a monster, but the way he plays some hi hat parts feels sterile and "stiff" and the dynamics really suffer. I wonder if a man of his abilities and musical sense just prefers it his way or if his high frequency deafness maybe contributes to the simplified patterns.

Thoughts from a newbie: I'm not at all bothered by Adami bringing it up constantly even though I'm not at all bothered by anything concerning MM's drumming. This is a forum, there's bound to be repetitions, and even more so on a band forum.

Just to let everyone know, I was talking the the paramount manager after the show and he said both shows were video taped and given to the band. He said he wasn't sure what would be done with the recording. He did say that it was filmed in high definition and he thought it may be used for bonus footage on the upcoming bluray/DVD. Just thought I would forward the info.

While that sounds cool, I do wonder where the cameras were positioned for that.  They obviously weren't at the front of the stage or anywhere near the band so it would have all had to be from a distance.  Obviously for a bootleg it isn't a big deal, but I wouldn't be expecting quality that is consistent with an official release.  I would love to see any footage of 21st Century Schizoid Man released at some point.

As for 6:00, I do agree that the patterns don't match to original.  I prefer the originals for sure.  But I'm not overly upset about it.  Though I do find it odd that as skilled as he is and as faithful to a lot of the other old parts why he plays this one differently.

I noticed that during Paradigm Shift and Schizoid Man Mangini was wearing his reading glasses.  I can only assume he was reading some charts he had set out for these songs.  I found it odd that he wasn't wearing them for "To Live Forever" though.  Obviously it isn't as complex as the other tunes, but I would think he is intimately familiar with Schizoid Man and wouldn't need a cheat sheet.  It makes me think he has had To Live Forever well rehearsed.  So I think it being performed in Argentina for the DVD isn't a big stretch.

There is a simple explanation. He is the drummer of the band now and as long as the other guys in the band agree, I think he has been changing parts of the songs to fit his style. That's perfectly fine since he is the drummer, not Mike Portnoy. We've seen him change up some parts in plenty of other songs since he joined the band.

EDIT: I'd also love to see To Live Forever on the DVD. That song is awesome.
