Welcome one and all!
I have once again decided to let a bunch of strangers send me music I've never heard. Again. I've learned some things about roulette-ing from holding one (and getting dead last in at least 3 or so). I was quite generous in rating last time around. NO MORE MR. NICE GUY! (Actually, I usually end up finding something to enjoy in most music I stumble upon. However, it's not gonna be like last time where barely anyone got less than an 8/10 on a regular basis. :P ) Anyways, songs will be rated a number from 1-10, 1 being piss-poor, 10 being astounding(-ly good).
The themes in each round will be odd, just like last time. Also, being inspired by orcus, I will do some random number-picking with some of those themes, so you may end up with some real easy or real difficult stuff depending on how Lady Luck's been feeling lately.
As for my tastes, well, I (STILL) do not have a last.fm or anything similar, so I'll give a brief and vague description. I'm pretty open-minded, in regards to music. I can dig the prog-metal and (some) pop. Jazz is something that really interests me. Orchestral music is something that can really take me places. If the music takes me somewhere, odds are I'm gonna be liking it. Go with your heart.
The competitors:
Antigoon
DTVT (the reigning champion!)
Gorille
kári
Kim Jong
Lie Low The Black Man
lonestar
obscure
and
Ytse
Round One is A Good Start!
What do you do here?
It's simple:
1. I send you a number between 1 and 26. It stays a secret between you and I.
2. Whatever number it is, you have to send in a song by an artist whose name begins with the number's corresponding letter. (For example, A=1, G=7, Z=26, ect.)
3. If you want to send in a band who's name begins with a number, it's acceptable, as long as that number's word form starts with your letter.
4. Let's get this thing rolling! ^^
-
:metal
-
It's on, bitches. :xbones
*prays everyone else gets a fucked up letter*
-
Couple of quick questions, is a youtube link ok?
If you are familiar with the song, I assume you will let us know...
And are live songs cool?
-

Yes.
Yes.
Yes, provided it's a decent recording.
-
I was asked about this just now, and will make this known to everyone: if the artist is a person, we're going by their last name. If it's multiple people, go by the first person's last name. For example, if you had S, you could send in say, William Shatner or Simon and Garfunkel.
-
::)
EDIT: Sent bitches!!!!
-
But how can we keep the number a secret? When you post the round results we'll be able to see what letter each of the artists starts with and thus what number everyone has right? :)
-
Wonder if you rolled 24 on anyone? Likin my number. Lots of options. *ponders*
Could be difficult to pull of back-to-back victories here. Cup, do you have last.fm or something? I perused your last roulette, but would be helpful to see what you already know.
-
Another quick question.
Was I in your previous roulette?
(edit)
Never mind, I just checked the "tracker" and it appears that I wasnt.
Song will be sent this evening when I get home from work.
So. About 7 hours from now.
-
Look forward to see what comes up out of this Roulette.
-
Z? god damn you cup.
-
Actually, I would have preferred X over my current letter.
As long as the rest of the rounds have an extreme luck element it will even out.
-
But how can we keep the number a secret? When you post the round results we'll be able to see what letter each of the artists starts with and thus what number everyone has right? :)
It stays a secret until the round's over and result's posted.
So, don't go around talking about your letter like antigoon.
-
That's okay, I won't be getting any points this round because I will be breaking the rules :lol Z.
lol.

You should punish him by drawing a new letter for him!
You're welcome, antigoon. Of course that was probably your plan all along. Curse you, antigoon.

hehehehehehe

-
I also sent. Not sure if he'll accept though :p
-
Will send as soon as I gets response to PM question. Ignore question on last.fm... need to pay attention to ENTIRE OP.
Also, deadline is ??
-
Sent mthrfckers!!! :metal
-
Oh my, what language out of such a pristine young lady. :\
-
oh my sincere apologies guys.. didn't know that there was a young lady among us :blush
:P
-
you shouldn't swear in front of little kids :)
-
oh isn't this one an all-fogeys roulette?? :omg:
*runs*
-
Mostly. Except the host. We definitely are in the majority.
Majority rulez!
-
I am the same age as the host, and your words taint my virgin ears. Also, I listen to many artists with my letter, so this might be a tough choice.
QUESTION FOR SHAKEY: What are your views on electronic music?
-
non-fogey here too D:
-
Well, it's time you two grow the fuck up :lol
I'm torn whether to side with my generation, or my country-men. There's enough fogey-vs-kid discussion on the boards, so Kris, whatdya say... let's side with Marc and Jordan here. Team Canada!!!! And Nem as an honorary Canuck.

I also do not get it.

Can I get quadruple points if I send a band that has two words both beginning with my letter, by sending a song that begins with the same letter, from an album that starts with the same letter?
-
WHY WASN'T I MADE AWARE OF THIS ROULETTE!?!

I don't get it.
A woman's gay friend is the male friend she is positive won't try to fuck her, the one she can feel "safe" around. Most other countries are pretty sure Canada won't fuck them, we feel safe around Canada. At least that's how I interpreted it.

You can blame its prevalence in America on the McKenzie brothers.
-
I've never heard anyone call anyone a hoser in this country. Maybe my city is just different. :lol
well don't ask me.. I don't even know what that means :lol
-
I always thought it roughly translated to "loser", but any of the amigos from up north can correct me if they feel like it.
-
It's the first time someone called me loser then :lol
-
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hoser
It's a somewhat affectionate term - definitely not equivalent to loser. More like when calling someone a goof or tool. LieLow has never heard it because after about 1984 when the McKenzie brothers were no longer on air, it faded away from culture.
-
Thanks for the correction. See Nem, I wasn't calling you a loser after all. ::)

sweet fuck I youtubed them the other day....oh man there were some good episodes.
The one where they discuss this woman who found a dead mouse in her beer bottle and was awarded a free case....so they are trying to figure out how to raise a mouse in a bottle and then drown it with beer and seal up the bottle to get free cases.
LMAO.....rick moranis spends the whole skit doing math in his head...priceless.

I was just about to post asking for my question to be answered again till you interrupted me. :lol What are your views on electronic music?

I am not very familiar with much electronic music.
I'm not an anti-electronic person, though, so if you have something from that realm and you love it, send it. I just might end up loving it, too.

Not sure what happened to it, if that's the case, as I do not see it in my inbox.
Care to send it again? If you do so, I'll have all the songs and will end up posting in results tonight or tomorrow morning.
(LLTWM just sent his recently ago.)

If you manage to get results up tonight, that would be some efficient roulette running there, cup. :tup

Results Are In!
Note about ratings: I will be rating songs based on how much I enjoyed them. If I really enjoy all songs in a round, y'all get high scores. If I find ya'll's selections 'meh', you scores will correspond with that. Also, in my scoring system, 5 means average, as in, not really good or bad, just there. Odds are, your scores will be from 6-8 (above average to good to very good). 9s and 10s mean that I found it GREAT. If I actually find a song displeasing, that'll be the only time I'd really be giving out a sub-5 score, and I (hope) that doesn't happen. :P
Anyhoo, here's how y'all did:
antigoon: Conor Oberst- Lenders in the Temple (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f-fYcpxmvrk)
I really liked this folksy ditty. I'm somewhat of an instrumental dork, but I found that the simple and sparse approach here really got me, due to its being so effective in bringing out the mood here. It's quite catchy, as well, which doesn't hurt, either. This really tuned out to be really appealing, man.
8
DTVT: Communic- Denial (https://grooveshark.com/s/Denial/40mHab?src=5)
I found this to be some really groovy, rockin' stuff. The drumwork was impressive, as well; it wasn't, like, super-over-the-top or anything, but the fills were pleasing and the grooves were pretty tasty, you know, and that's never a bad thing. The bridge also picked things up, not that it was lacking energy before it, or anything.
8
Gorille85: Hans Zimmer - Time (Inception OST)]Hans Zimmer- Time (https://grooveshark.com/s/Time/3EF4fc?src=5)
Effective scoring can really add impact to a film. This song, from Inception's OST, is a good example of that. It begins with a simple piano progression over a pulsing synth rhythm and grows into a grand statement as more and more layers of orchestration come in. After climaxing, it ends as it began. Really hard-hitting stuff there; this sort of music is what really made me dig seeing Inception. (I really ought to get the OST, eh?)
9
kári: Mono- Moonlight (https://grooveshark.com/#!/s/Moonlight/73XIu?src=5)
When you said it'd take me places, you weren't lying! The gradual, but very intense crescendo that defined much of this piece really gave it a real sense of journey, like I was floating upwards some great distance! It was so cool seeing such a great deal of variation made around one series of chord progressions, as well. I'm a sucker for a great buildup, and you got me hook, line, and sinker.
10
jingle.boy: Pagan's Mind- Hallo Spaceboy (https://grooveshark.com/s/Hallo+Spaceboy/2nuRNY?src=5)
Real thick Sci-fi-like atmosphere going on here, which can do no wrong in my mind. ;D Overall, it's quite eerie, as well as very energetic. Lots of catchy vocal lines going on. I approve.
8
Lie Low The Wanted Man: Floex - Precious Creature (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B4IhOuKicMI)
The combination of woodwind melodies and electronic loops and beats proves effective in creating a cool and unsettling atmosphere. I feel it would have worked better as an instrumental, but as is, it's a good execution of an interesting idea.
7
lonestar: Steve Howe- Running The Human Race (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZP14fT2k-qY&feature=related)
Great guitarwork from the Yes-man himself. Lots of great melodies are to be found here. The backing tracks are rather late-80s-kitschy-sounding, but do a good job at following the directions of the guitarwork upfront.
8
obscure: Brainstorm- Below The Line
(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fjvkU-0A3xI)
It's a good and catchy mid-paced rocker. I enjoyed it, being a fan of power metal, though I didn't find it outstanding. It did everything well, though, and it's damn energetic.
7
YtseBitsySpider: Maxxess- Slow Motion (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U_iJVeGwfKI&feature=related)
Very relaxing and calm. That I quite enjoy. While the texture is very nice, it does lack a bit in terms of variety. However, it is very pleasant overall.

Overall, good stuff came in. We're off 2 a good start, and speaking of 2, Round 2 is:
Time 2 Time
Here's how it goes down:
I send each of you a PM with 2 random numbers. You then have to send in a song lasting any number of minutes between those numbers.
-
Glad you liked it. Like I said in my PM, I had to suffer through over an hour of his solo stuff to find the right song. The sacrifices I make for this forum.
-
kári needs to unclog his inbox.
I'll catch y'all tomorrow; I've some actual sleep to do.

And round two sent!!!

The choices... Will think of something tomorrow.

I'm sure it was agony!
Cup... you said that 'live' songs were ok, I assume that stands for this round? Even still, I have a grand total of 34 songs to chose from in my library that are within the times I got. And is this like Nick's roulette where even one second over (or under) results in an automatic fail and 0 points?
-

^Questions pace of Cup's roulette.
Since all the songs are a decent length, this round might take a tad longer to judge. they will be up probably tomorrow though.

Having lived thru Nick's, I'm only now starting to get impatient. Why do people start these things, then disappear? I understand life can get in the way sometimes, but sheesh, seems a little inconsiderate to bail when there's a waiting list
P.S. same goes for top 50 (though not the current group)
-
I can understand the disappearance, life does get in the way at times however a post explaining where you go would be nice.
-
Classic roulette running tactic. Don't want to do the write-up for a few days? Avoid the entire forum so nobody can heckle you :lol

I've been there. :lol
-
In defense of Cup and LLTWM, the rush to judgement on these things has gotten a little out of hand. Even in a perfect world where all participants send within an hour of the round being posted, I'd prefer a measured judgement based on several listens rather than a snap judgement.
-
Agreed... but I think most of us can listen to 8-10 songs a few times in less than one week.
-
No judgment here, I just like to heckle.
-
Mostly heckling here too. In the grand scheme of things, games like this at an online forum don't take precedence over everything else.
But goddamnit... let's move already! :lol
-
I keep my lunacy contained in the Circus Maximus thread.
-
I apologize about the lack of RESULTS, lately. For some reason, I've actually been getting sleep and having somewhat of a love outside of my house. :P (It ain't bad, taking music classes at a local college. It's kinda like high school, except everyone's competent and cares about what they're doing.) Fortunately, I'm on Spring Break, as of a few hours ago, so I will have the means to get things moving at a decent clip for the next nine days.
bonestar: IQ- The Province (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OKDbyZGlPUg)
This really reminded me of Genesis. Especially the heavy, angry section with the organ that appeared after the first 2 verses. I dunno if I like it as much as Genesis, though, but it's very good, nonetheless. It also seemed rather sci-fi-ish. I preferred the more mysterious first half, but the second half was some solid rocking.
8
Lie Low The Longish Acronym: Thinking Plague- Malaise (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H8vFcTPA9A8)
This is a really cool track! It sounded very heavy and dissodent, but not in the usual way that normal rock would be. The vocals were strange, but that really appealed to me, actually. Also, shout out to the percussion for being rather progressive in its approach without being in-the-face about it. The weirdness that characterized the overall sound hit me in a good zone, bringing to mind hostile, alien landscapes.
9
Grill: Modeselektor- Pretentious Friends feat. Busdriver (https://grooveshark.com/s/Pretentious+Friends+Feat+Busdriver/4dtUEH?src=5)
Not bad. I initially expected to find myself annoyed when I heard the first couple seconds, being someone who has little to do with electronic dance music and rap. However, I ended up enjoying it. The arrangement was good and chaotic; much better than the the PAP I hear blaring on the radio when I'm shopping. I found myself coming across cool nuggets in the background, like that Mario-ish coin sound that is played and echoes after some of the 'verses'. The lyrics also were humourous.
7
antigoon: Gotye- State Of The Art (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xWIKQMBBTtk)
I'm not a pap person, but this impressed me. At its base, it was a very catchy, reggae-like, tune, but what really made it was the arrangement. It was very lushly arranged with all sorts of nice orchestra-ish samples and a number of effective synth melodies/riffs that added to the overall sound quite nicely. The story (which I could actually understand, due to the awesome cartoon) was quite entertaining, as well; sounds like Gotye has a sense of humour. Sure beats that other thing that is spelled really similarly.
8
YtseTitsySpider: Shadrane- Lanterns Danse (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=On_4osFFVg0)
Quite a lot went on in that there song. Which I suppose is to be expected from prog-metal. I like how the sound seems more oriented towards the keys and vocals in much of the song. Not everything needs to be heavy as hell. I do feel the second half would have been stronger if it stuck to being softer or went from soft to loud in one direction as opposed to jumping between the two a bit. Good tune; probably makes more sense when heard in context with the rest of the album.
7
jingle boy: Spock's Beard- At The End Of The Day (https://grooveshark.com/s/At+The+End+Of+The+Day/36aqbv?src=5)
Now that was some prog-out! I'm not too familiar with SB, but if this song's indicative of their discography, I'm sold. It was alright at first, but really got good after the 5-minute mark or so. The brass in (one of) the bridge(s) was a good touch, as well as the Queen-like vocals on the chorus. I really dug the keyboarder and drumerer.
9
Dream Theater Virginia Tech: Therion- The Siren Of The Woods (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K6NVIBwWsdE)
This almost sounds like something you'd hear in some western RPG game as the main theme or the credits song. Overall, the sound is quite appealing, in spite of, or even because of the 90s-ish orchestral keyboards. The use of Latin? was a good touch as well. I concur that this did take me on a bit of an adventure Really can't say too much bad about a power metal ballad that can be taken (sort of ) seriously.
9
kári: Mew- Comforting Sounds (https://grooveshark.com/#!/s/Comforting+Sounds+album+Version/argZd?src=5)
Well, it was sounds. Some of it was comforting, as well. The end wasn't so comforting, because it was loud. The entire song was very pretty. I am somewhat of a sucker for 'pretty-sounding music' and post-rock, so it's only natural that this really appealed to me. I mean, that last minute, where everything was all layered up and rich, that sort of stuff is impossible not to love.
10
obscure: Jag Panzer- Bringing on the End (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fa9iR-Up3Bg)
This is some good and heavy stuff here. Kind of reminds me of, say, Iced Earth, except more mid-paced. Just a good, driving metal tune with a killer riff. Which isn't a bad thing at all.

I thank you for your songs and patience. I've yet to have received something I didn't like. :)
The next round is now; let's hope you've stocked up on your Mountain Dew and Doritos! It's
Exthreeme!
I (randomly) pick out a number between 1 and 3 for you. Depending on the number, you have to pick out a song which has a certain characteristic having to do with 3.
You'll understand better when you get your message.
-
Cool, glad you liked that song. It grows on ya, I listened to pretty much nothing else for four days when I used it in Nem's roulette(I did my review on that album)
I''ll look for a song, but this weekend is a clusterfuck for me, so it might not be in till monday.
-
Damn, it'll be so hard to try and pick a song which will not end my streak!
-
... And we're back!
Cup... sleep is irrelevant. Love is irrelevant. Resistance (to roulette's) is futile. :D
As for Spock's Beard.... yes, this is indicative of their entire catalog. Wide ranging opinions here on DTF as to which the best album is, but you definitely can't go wrong with V. The Kindness of Strangers is also pretty damn sweet. My only suggestion would be to stay away from their s/t (it's probably the weakest of the bunch). If you like concept albums, get Snow.

Nice to see you back Cup, "Comforting Sounds" is a great song.

-
OK cup they're all in, gimme that Easter 10!!!

It's (still) Easter (in my timezone) and I come bearing gifts! The song selection this time through was the best yet! Part of me is like, “Man, you’re being too generous,” but the rest of me is all, “Shut your ass! This music is good damn music!”
starburns: Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears- She's So Scandalous (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N3iwPJTDhd0&feature=related)
That's some black-ass music. It's, like, the opposite of Uriah Heep. And thank God for that. :P You know, this tune just made me feel so chilled out; that's the sort of thing I end up getting out of real good R&B-type tunes. The horns were like the cherry and cream atop the (Easter) sundae. I could totally see this having become one of those really popular tunes that end up in, like, every good-times comedy if it was made in the 70s.
10
Gorilla: Brad Mehldau- Paranoid Android (https://grooveshark.com/s/Paranoid+Android/44UZhU?src=5)
Very impressive interpretation of the Radiohead tune. The instrumental work, particularly the piano and percussion, was very inspired. The first half, very chaotic and syncopated, as well as the last bit, stood in contrast to the much slower, serene middle section. I'd say I prefer this over the original. Can't say no to well-crafted jazz, eh?
9
Kim Jon: Ayreon- Pain (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABdBsmeDbQQ)
It's prog metal and part of a concept album, but it's quite accessible. The production is lush and the song is rather catchy. It appears that there's more of an emphasis on getting across the mood and message of the scene than displaying how technical a song can be written, which I feel is a good thing for a concept album. Feels sort of airy and uplifting; I'm guessing the protagonist is strong in is fight with his emotions. Also, the occasional growl thrown in at the end of some phrases is a cool touch; just felt like saying.
8
TitsyJam: Magic Elf- Visions In Green (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ch4YJznQl5w)
Very smooth, often calm shred jam; not quite fusion, not quite metal. These guys are clearly very well-acquainted with their instruments and are happy to make sure you know about it. The main riff is a good one and the form's plenty interesting. What really makes it is (obviously) the soloing. Not only is the guitarwork high class, but the bassist also does a swell job going up and down the scales.
8
obscure: Creation's End- Hollow (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OWGe_rCWL-o)
Power metal song is powerful. Does pretty much everything you'd want a power metal ballad to do, and does it well. The chorus is impactful and very catchy, as well. It gets really good when it hits the bridge and things speed up. A very worthy piece of modern power metal with prog leanings.
8
Mason Dixon Line: Ben Folds Five - One Angry Dwarf and 200 Solemn Faces (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SrWSkQMWlAY)
You said it'd be fun. It was. Like, super-fun. This song was just seeping with energy and really stuck with me. Ben Folds dominates the sound with his great piano-ing. It really embodies what I've been finding that I like about alt-rock; random-ass guys making short, but concise tunes about life and making it entertaining.
9
Long Acronym, Eh?: Gentle Giant- Schooldays (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4-MdA0LPXj0)
Gentle Giant is a real popular prog act, but I’ve never gotten around to going through their stuff. Sounds like I ought to get off my arse and do so, if this tune is any indicator of their quality! It’s so full of cool bits and jiblets, not to mention the haunting big picture. It’s very technical, but not just the soloing; the entire arrangement is often well off the kilter! I don’t think I’ve ever heard a band with a sound like theirs.
10
pro-not-goon: Mumford & Sons- Winter Winds (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VROW2iYllrE)
Just as catchy as it is whimsical. It sounds like a perfect song to dance a jig to or sing along to drunkenly. I’m not a folk-freak or anything, but this did strike a chord with me. It sounds like they are really feeling what they’re doing and do a real good job at putting that out there. Music for entertainment that really entertained me.
9
Kári: Sigur Ros- Hoppipolla (https://grooveshark.com/#!/s/Hoppipolla/4yVQMa?src=5)
I’m familiar with these guys (only AB and ( ) ), and love what they do. I’ve not heard their newer stuff, though, so this is new to my ears. Very airy, uplifting, music with a lot of layering and much beauty is what this is. It didn’t take me quite to where their earlier stuff did, as it was a bit more ‘normal’, but it’s still good Sigur Ros, which means great music.

starburns: Fish- The Company
Very good choice. Sounds rather Genesis-like, though in a much poppier, more concise format. The tune is quite catchy and the folksy, ye olde tyme English sound comes across very well, even in spite of the glossy production.
8
Spiderman: Jazz Pistols- Three On The Floor
Hells yeah! These guys play some fusion and they play it like it ought to be played: very well. The way they're playing is near mechanical, but it's groovy. I could jam to this sorta stuff for :long period of time:. That drumming, man.
9
800 pound Gorille: Frank Turner- Peggy Sang The Blues
This was good and catchy. The basswork is tasty. Seems like 90% of everything is folksy rock, this included, but it stands out as its own thing. You know, it's a dude making good music and telling stories. Can't say no to that.
7
LieLowTheKraftDinner: Susanne Sundf(/)r- Father Father
Impressive. Very beautiful choral tune. This sounds like what I'd expect to hear in a church. (Not that I know what churches are like or anything.) It leaves me wanting more.
10
obscure: Marcus Miller- Bruce Lee
Now that's some funky music, there. Marcus Miller is a man who can slap the bass at least an adequate level, and he dominates this track, naturally. The horns add to the good juicy riff/theme. The production's a bit on the smooth side, but the music is jammin.
9
Freemason: Ghost- Ritual
This is so 80s. It's heavy, catchy metal that alludes back to early, melodic stuff that's just as much about making memorable tunes as it is about pounding a listener's skull in. This tune promises fun and delivers.
8
káre bear: Bright Eyes- First Day of My Life
Bare-bones folk, just a dude and his guitar. The melodies are very pleasant, making for a memorable and soothing tune. There's a real sentimental feel to the whole thing. I approve.
8
Kim Bong Ill: Spirit of the West- Home for a Rest
This sounds like a bunch of rural 1800s Scots, had they been sent to the present, heard some punk music, and decided to emulate it for whatever reason. It's super-fun and puts a smile on my face. Would dance to it. If I wasn't an uncoordinated spaz. :P
9
noog: Arcade Fire- Keep The Car Running
It seems Arcade Fire's all the rage among young white males aged 16 to 25. I'm not familiar with their music at all, until now. I enjoyed it. It's very 80s pop-rock sounding. Almost like, say, Bruce Springsteen or U2. Very catchy and accessible.

bingle.joy: Flaming Row- Unearth The Truth
Very impressive. There were some cool musical moments, especially that one unison about halfway through, and the bridge near the end. It makes me curious as to the rest of the story surrounding it and how that plays out.
8
Mason Dixon Line: Enchant- Paint The Picture
Those bastards! They done stole that keyboard line from Xanadu! NO POINTS FOR YOU!
Nah, I couldn't do that. I enjoyed that tune. It was one of those fun, uplifting prog songs, you know. It's very poppy and sticks to the ear.
8
noog: Streetlight Manifesto- Somewhere in the Between
Really, man? Really? This?
It is the bee's knees! It's like a Queen song, except it's ska and there's some good jazz bits thrown around as well. And I dig that. Like, really, you'd think someone'd tell me about this shit. You, man, are the man.
10
káridashian: 65daysofstatic- Radio Protector
More post rock! Yeahs! Really, this is another good 'un from ya! What's really neat is that they've got this super-frantic sound to them. I mean, like, usually this sorta stuff is chill-out music, but not these guys! This is music for getting pumped up! Great variety of textures; the thing's a pleasure to hear the various layers come in and out.
9
starburns: The Who- Doctor Jimmy
Honestly, that could be the best Who song I've heard. It had a crapton of veracity in its performance, not to mention the fact that it's got a memorable tune and a rather cool story being told. From what Alex here told me, it's right around the climax of the album, and I believe it. There's a real sense of 'woah', ya know?
10
Manspider: Touchstone- When Shadows Fall
We've got some fun, poppy, prog-metal here. It's got a nice fast section, some good vocals, and gets real good once it slows down. Nothing super mind-blowing, but a good time.
7
Gorille: Tallest Man On Earth- The Dreamer
I'm all for some good folk, you know, some good poetry with a well-thought-out melody. Sounds like this guy can do some good folk, eh? The tune's real memorable and sounds like he means it. I dig it.
8
obscure: Star One - Intergalactic Space Crusaders
This is a real good fun metal tune. How can I say no to a solid throwback to 80s metal, you know? Not to mention that it's an ear worm. You can tell the creators must have had a hell of a time. I could totally see this having had been a hit single in the late 80s.
8
LieLolTehWaiterMan: Maudlin of the Well- Rose Quartz Turning To Glass
Great selection here! The first few minutes are some real good modern-classical sounding stuff. I could do without the weird crying section, but the last couple minutes where it's sounding all Canturbury are neato.

Six Deadly Sins!
Basically, you will get assigned (by PM) a random sin.

Also, you can get a random bonus if you can correctly guess this:
As you probably know, there are actually seven sins, but I'm only using a pool of six, because it's round six and I wanted to use the sin theme with the evil round number.
Try and guess which sin I have excluded!

obscure: Chevelle- Envy
Colour me impressed. I'd heard of Chevelle through people bitching about post-grunge and such, but this don't sound like no bland butt-rock. It stays pretty laid back until the end or so, which I say works really well for building up the tension. You can feel the sense of want. Catchy, as well.
8
Lie Low The 'bating Man: Hatfield & The North- Let's Eat (Real Soon)
Canturbury Scene, eh? Not too shabby, you prog-ster. You've brought be a real swell piece of 60s pop, there. With a slightly-off jazzy touch to it. The lyrics about 'eating' put a grin on my face.
8
starburns: Sammy Hagar- Mas Tequila
Sounds a lot like Van Halen. Which I guess would make sense, considering he was their face for some time. Totally poppy and all bout that gluttony for the drink. A party rock anthem here.
7
DTVTechnoremix: Between The Buried And Me- Informal Gluttony
I'm not the sort who listens to loads and loads of extreme metal, but that didn't prevent me from really enjoying this track. After really enjoying that initial 'Middle Eastern' sounding intro, the main death-metal(?) section caught me by surprise, but positively. The majority of that track, you know, was real pummeling, aside from the couple softer, chorus-like sections. Real cool, non-standard extreme metal, overall. I can see why you dig this and I dig it as well.
10
George Foreman Gorille85: CunninLynguists- Embers
Hip hop that I actually rather enjoyed? Must be 2012. It really does fit the description of 'poetry to a rhythm'. The lyrics really provided some cool imagery and the backing track added to them to create a cool pop tune. Wasn't expecting to enjoy underground hip hop that much.
8
ManSpider: Bullet For My Valentine- Fever
Seems to have a lot of the energy and poppiness of metalcore, but lacks a dumb breakdown. Which works for it; keeps things nice and concise. You know, this stuff is all about being fast stuff to mosh and bang to and it works.
8
kári: Eluvium- Prelude For Time Feelers
This really does seem to fill that definition of sloth you described in your PM. It seems rather sad and aimless, just continuing on it its way. It's a beauty, nonetheless. Something I could meditate to.
9
noog: Mastodon- Black Tongue
Heavy effing metal, right there! That shit is a pounder. Moves at a good clip, the drumming is way-over-the-top, and overall, it sounds like it could be the soundtrack to a violent video game.
9
jim.kong: Frameshifter- Human Grain
Good and catchy. Not quite proggy, not quite industrial. The lyrics and concept I really dug.
7
Also, about the guessing game, the sin I excluded from the drawing pool was Greed! Also, though Pride was in the drawing pool, the random number generator I used to pick your sins didn't land on Pride's number, so that could have sorta counted. Except no one guessed that one.
Gorille guessed Greed, though, and he gets 5 extra points!

patrick star: Triumph- Just A Game
Not bad. It's got an enjoyable and overall feel and I like the chorus. It didn't really stand out to me, though; sounds very normal AOR-like. I'd definitely take it over, say, Styx or Journey, though.
6
jim.kong: Led Zeppelin- Hey Hey What Can I Do?
Send me a better song; that's what you can do!
Seriously, that was one of the best songs of the Led Zep I've heard. I've generally found myself enjoying their laid back songs the most and this is no exception. It, a groovy acoustic jam, really could (and should) have been a hit. Really can take a guy back to the past.
9
DTTV: Pearl Jam- The Yellow Ledbetter
I didn't know Pearl Jam was into folk rock, nor did I know that they took a whack at it and did an admirable job. It's very groovy and leaves me feeling relaxed, as well as lazy. Actually I was pretty lazy before, so that's an uncertainty. Kind of makes me want to actually get into Pearl Jam.
8
The (obs)Cure: Iced Earth- Iron Will
I've not heard anything of theirs since the late 90s. This is no disappointment. Seems they went for a retro-80s feel and it worked out quite well. You know, it's aggressive and heavy, but very melodic and sort of uplifting.
8
JtseYam: Stan Bush- Touch
It's better than this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7y-x2fWKbmo), I'll give you that.
5
kári: Radiohead- Last Flowers
ITS: Radiohead goes back to their older style and does it quite well. Like, really, this sounds like it'd be on The Bends. And would be a highlight of the record.
9
LieLolTomWaitsMan: Porcupine Tree- Buying New Soul
Thanks for reaffirming my love of the quiet, non-metallic PT.
10
antigoon: The Dear Hunter- B. Linus
Not bad. Sort of proggy, but nice and short-to-the-point. I prefer the stuff I've heard from their Color Spectrum project, but this is good, too.
7
Gorilled Cheese: Radiohead- Staircase
I've not heard the King of Limbs, so I really didn't know what to expect going into this song. If this is representative of their new sound, I must say they're continuing with being good at changing their sound. This is some real relaxing, deep stuff here.

Dammit cup, was hoping to wake up to something. You've been pretty on time so far though, I'll let you slide on this one.
-
:(
-
OK, just about to clock into an eight hour shift, and if I can plate 200 meals in those hours, you surely can write a few reviews. :tup

Kids these days, absolutly no follow through. :getoffmylawn:

Yeah, someone needs to put these whipper-snappers in the penalty box. Delay of game.
-
He hasn't been nonlinear since Thursday, I hope he didn't meditate himself into a coma listening to all our mellow songs. QUICK,SOMEONE SEND HIM SOME THRASH!!!!
-
School and stuff and excuses.
Gorille85: Boards of Canada- Everything You Do Is A Balloon
This really was the sort of thing I was seeking. The intro was super-calming and perhaps even beautiful. The majority was more tense, but rather hypnotic. Pretty amazing how it went so well with that creepy PSA.
9
LieLowTheWaitangerine: Tangerine Dream- Mysterious Semblance at the Strand of Nightmares
Wow. That really took me somewhere else. Like, I've heard space-rock and stuff that's, like, supposed to sound like what space/non-Earth places are like, but this really does feel like some other, weird-ass world. Fantastic submission!
10
Ytse: Ozric Tentacles- Hidden Step
A lot of psycedelic rock I've heard kind of let me down, in the sense that it sometimes would feel too much like normal bluesy stuff to me. This did not let me down. It's like, rock, but not at all, if you understand what I'm saying. Great musicianship on these guys' part; they seem quite technically skilled, in addition to their creativity.
9
bonestar: Yes- Awaken
I love their first 7 albums, never heard anything else, including this tune. It pretty much embodies everything normal people love to complain about, regarding Yes. Naturally, I loved it.
10
kári: Sergej Bezrodny/Vladimir Spivakov- Spiegel Im Spiegel
You always seem to end up picking some of the most beautiful music, man. Listening to this piece just really made me feel happy and at ease. At peace. This song/piece/whatever's the best term really does embody peace, IMO.
10
obscure: Guilt Machine- Leland Street
Good, creepy prog-ish ballad. My favorite part was the section in the middle with the organs.
7
DTVT: Gazpacho- Missa Atropos
This is a cool, groovy jam. The overall sound is rich and sort of space-y, though I didn't necessarily find it meditative. I enjoyed it, nonetheless.
7
bingle.joy: Pink Floyd- A Great Day For Freedom
Definitely better than anything I've heard off of AMLOR. Balladry done their way and right.
8
noog: Berasin Quartett- Mehr Als Alles Andere
Solid, quirky electronic piece. Not ambient, but not super melodic and approachable. Mysterious and almost playful.
8
Really great round, guys, really was.
Wankings:
káre bare- 74

Gorille- 71
The Champ- 67

noog- 66
Kim Bong- 66
obscure- 62
Manspider- 60
Round 9 is the last round, so send a song that's the last on its album/ep. Even better if it's the last song on the last album/ep of the artist.
-
I kinda figured that one was a slam dunk. Last round sent, been a pleasure cup. :tup
-
Too tired to surf through the catalog tonight. You'll have it tomorrow.
-
Great choice Gorille. BoC is my favourite electronic group. :hefdaddy Will think of a send.
-
I'll send in three days. Fitting given the round theme and what place I'm in

-
I don't know what to send anymore... you are the biggest puzzle for me cup... :(
-
For the most part these round themes did not play to my strengths, particularly last round as chill music is boring IMO (thus my disinterest of SW's solo work).
I have a song I want to send, but it's not on youtube or grooveshark so I'll need to send it to you.
-
Totally alright, man.
About to send you my electronic mail address, via private message.

starburns: Marillion- The Last Straw
I will make the obligatory comparison to Genesis in 3, 2, 1...
It reminds me of Genesis. That's alright, though, because I care for them, if not as much as other groups. Also, this sounds a lot more down-to-earth and personal than those douches. Really does sound like an upsetting end of an era, there. May as well check out this group.
9
jingle.boy: Whiteshake- Sailing Ships
I was expecting some blues-rock song about sex and reptiles, but this turned out to be something else. It reminded me of, like, Dio all pompous and such. I'd dare compare it to a tamer early DT. I like 80s cheese, though.
8
Dr DTVT: Checkerboards
Alright. I found it enjoyable, overall, but nothing that, say, really stood out or anything. It was mostly sort of there.
6
Yahtzee Jam: Derek Sherinian- Black Utopia
That was an enjoyable jam. You wouldn't think that groove-metal type-riffing would go so well with more prog-oriented keys and such, but it turned out really well.
8
K(accented a)ri: Mogwai- Fear Satan
The flute and the awesomely syncopated drumming really help make this sound like an exotic journey of sorts. Very uplifting, as well. Will look into Mogwai.
10
LLTWM: Loreena McKennitt- Dante’s Prayer
I agree with your statement that it is a beautiful song. Perfect music to hike to or otherwise journey around. Would fit a fantasy film soundtrack, as well.
8
Obscure: Leprous - Painful Detour
More prog-power-metal. What a surprise. :neverusethis:
Really, though, I found this to be a cool track. It sounds a lot weirder than most stuff of the genre. Also, props for ripping off ‘Dream On’.
8
Antigoon: Vampire Weekend- I Think Ur A Contra
I like the blending of foreign percussioning with an American folksy sound. Works quite well on this catchy and soothing song. Do all their songs sound different like this?
9
Gorille85: Massive attack- Atlas Air
I’ve been really digging more electronic music lately, so this is a bit of a treat, eh? It seems to be at a compromise between the more danceable stuff and calmer ambient. Rather mysterious sound. Makes me want to try out more trip-hop.

Middle of the pack... ah, I'll take it. Good times, despite some of the grief we gave you Sebastien.
Congrats Ruben.
