Since I believe Cole's is drawing to a close, I figured I might as well get the ball rolling on the second edition of my roulette. I'm hopefully going to be more timely in my updates for this one, as I've kept the quantity of participants lean and mean, but I am a high school student so cut me some slack and blame the system if there is ever any delay.
For reference, you should use my last fm to check and see if I'm familiar with the artist that you're sending. However, please be aware that (as is probably obvious) my last fm documentation of my listening is far from thorough. There are some artists I know well that I've never scrobbled, and others that I have only scrobbled minimally. Anything under 10 plays is a safe bet, I'd say, but just be aware of that. https://www.last.fm/user/dtismajesty
With that said, I'm lactating with excitement to hear what you all have to send. The first round is open, but I'll try to throw some more interesting ones in there throughout.

Gorille
Antigoon

I guess now would be an appropriate time to mention the point scale. Absolute maximum of 8, with 0 being rock bottom. The idea is that those two will be very seldom awarded, just to make sure that I have a high ceiling. I remember feeling a little restricted by a strict song ranking system from last time, so I'll be giving this a try.
Right, the song rankings. Here we go. Gave each two complete listens, would probably do more but I know how people sometimes react to extended periods between updates, and I'll be leaving for NY for 2 days tomorrow so this is probably for the best.
Gorille – Beck – Hell Yes
This makes for pretty cool instrumental electronic. Some cool nuances here and there. Unfortunately I wasn’t feeling the song much beyond that. The spoken word/sampled vocal parts were pretty uninspired and didn’t contribute too much, and eventually the little nuances got repetitive. However, it was still a nice and enjoyable song, so don’t take that too harshly.

Ravenheart
Jill Tracy - Evil Night Together
I think you knew exactly what you were doing when you sent me this. Two things I’ll admittedly usually swoon over; jazzy piano and low female vocals, and this song has both of those in spades. And fuck, chamber orchestration? Get out of my brain. Anyway, the song was very nice and really nailed the feeling it was going for.

Antigoooon
Elbow – Lippy Kids
The strong pop sensibilities of this song were evident nearly immediately. I could tell that these are men who know exactly when to bring in the warm clean electric tones, when to sample the synthetic strings, when to take the singing into a higher register, etc. So yeah, it’s really well done for what it is. What surprised me was the lack of the crescendo into the main melody with distortion and crash symbols and what-have-you. Definitely counter to the normal direction to take a song of this type, and I like it. The little piano line near the end is my favorite part.

Ariich
Sia – Soon We’ll be Found
I know this melody! My friend recorded a nice cover of it not that long ago. The original version here is much more subtle and subdued. The girl’s voice is definitely nice and unique. Her pronunciation and style is almost awkward by the standards for such a song, but in a good and certainly intentional way. The orchestration is very synthetic and a bit bothersome sometimes, but that’s a minor objection against a very solid and memorable pop song.
5 points
Sonatafanica
The Blood Brothers – Love Rhymes with Hideous Car Wreck
This song had me the most divided by far, out of any of them. This band has some really cool things going on, particularly vocally. The high, squeaky guy is great, and the “love love love” part is really nice. However, the instrumentation beneath was really lifeless, and some of the melodies were a good deal more grating than the aforementioned one (particularly the “back at the hospital” bit) and the screamo breakdown was way over-the-top. That’s why I’m so divided over this song. The score is a bit low for now, but I could see myself warming up to it more given time.

Sigz
The Body – Empty Hearth
Fuck. I’m not very good at putting words together to describe stuff like this, since it’s so far removed from my usual experience with music. This shit is cool, though. Mhm. It doesn’t get much more immense and dark than this. I like how it has electronic elements but still manages to sound really earthy.
5 points
Zantera
British Theatre – Gold Bruise
So this is what the Oceansize guy is up to, now? Cool, definitely seems like a logical progression from where Oceansize ended up. The music was very nice, the electro-organic sound seems very natural here. I like the vocals, but for a song so sparse and canvas-y they were a bit too lifeless and seemed to sink into the other textures a little too often. Just a minor mark, he still sounds great, as does his new output.
5 points
Orcus
The Big Pink – Velvet
A mid-tempo groove definitely seems to be a staple of this round. I think it’s been best put to use here, though. Unlike many other songs of this type, (personal experience) the electronic beat is put to good use and is an integral part of the song. And it’s a very good song, too. The fuzzy guitars and general loudness are always exactly where they should be, and I really like how the soft falsetto harmonies still manage to find a place within all of the distortion.

So, solid round. Lots of 5s and shit. As I mentioned earlier, I'll be up in NY for the next two days, but I'll be back by Sunday, so we can be in pretty good shape if they're all in by then.
Round 2 - maximalism. I'm leaving this term fairly open to interpretation, so don't think that it's necessarily some Toby Driver shit with over 100 layered tracks. I'm more looking for something that is intricately layered and has a lot to pick apart, if you catch my drift. These rounds are very "loose," though, and I won't be giving you too much trouble if you stray away from their constraints slightly.
Anyway, I think that's all. Man, I forgot how much goddamn writing goes into these things.

Ariich – Closure in Moscow
The Mars Volta comparisons were definitely immediately apparent. Unfortunately, the reasons I’m not a huge Mars Volta fan translated as well. It’s a great exhibition of musicianship and ideas, but there’s not much to hold on to as far as the actual song. Also, the vocalist was talented but his parts didn’t seem to settle very well with the music underneath.
3 points
Orcus – This Will Destroy You – Little Smoke
Hm. This was probably the clearest interpretation of the round’s theme. The slow, reverb-drenched minor chord buildup is no stranger to post-rock, but this group takes it to extremes. The louder parts are exceedingly abrasive, and the softer ones are downright ambient. It’s nice, overall, but a good bit too over-indulgent, imo.
3 points
Antigoon – SBTRKT – Never Never
This song is really well done. The pop sensibilities are strong, the electronic nuances are perfectly placed, and the vocals fit over them perfectly. Superb production as well. Yay.
6 points
Ravenheart – Sopor Aeternus – In der Palastra
Woah. This is interesting. Very goth, very medieval. The singer is fantastic, definitely one of the more tortured/angsty sounding voices I’ve heard. The choirs and other classical elements definitely made it fit well for the round theme.
5 points
Gorille – Modeselector – Shipwreck
This one took a few listens, but I think it makes a bit more sense to me now. There’s the classic obscured Thom Yorke vocals, which don’t seem terribly important to the song, but kind of act as little background nuances. The production is what’s important here, and it’s well done.
4 points
Sigz - Arts the Beatdoctor – Transitions
I’ve mentioned production a lot for this round, but this one probably takes the cake. The instrumental track is pretty much the perfect background for the guy to rap on about whatever the fuck he’s talking about. The change to the part with the weird bass synth was kind of odd, but once the part got going it was nice, if a little out of place. Great song.
5 points
Zantera - The War on Drugs - Brothers
It’s a good song. The guy has a nice “everyman” kind of voice, but it’s nice that he doesn’t force it on you too much, as he’s not exaggerating on the off-pitch slides or anything like that as other singers of his type will sometimes do. The music behind him isn’t terribly interesting or inspired, but it provides a nice background.
4 points
Car Seat Headrest – Cute Thing
You’ve shown me this band before, but it was nice to have the lyrics in front of me this time. They’re good lyrics. The music is cool too, lots of energy behind it and the sound is raw without being too abrasive. I like the singer as well.

-
I'm okay with 4 points, as I'm not sure how much it fitted within the "maximalistic"-point. Glad you enjoyed the song at least, I would recommend their album "Slave Ambient", really good mix of Folk/Indie Rock and Ambient, maybe you'll find other songs you would like more on it. ;)

Sigz - Celldweller - The Last Firstborn
This guy has a pretty cool hybrid sound going. Sometimes it sounds very radio rock-esque, e.g. Linkin Park type sound, but I can tell that he doesn't care, and he's certainly a lot more creative. It's a cool song, overall, but I feel like there was something missing. The interesting elements were there but I didn't find much in the actual composition. I like the intense bits most, the ones with the shouty/growly vocals.
3 points
Orcus - Protest the Hero - C'est la Vie
I've always been torn towards this band. Solid exhibition of ideas, fantastic exhibition of musicianship/vocal prowess, but I haven't found much to hold on to in their songs. The song did get much cooler in the middle, though, with the crescendo and all. One of the better songs I've heard from them.
3 points
Ravenheart - VNV Nation - Space & Time
This song's intentions were obvious right from the start. The chord progression, the drum sequencers, and the synth sounds (as well as everything else) absolutely scream 80s dance, and they're spot on. It's a good song, but I can't help but think that 5 minutes is a little too long for the synth arpeggios to sequence on and on. I like the vocalist's style, though. Very Morrissey, he sounds.
4 points
Antigoon - Harlem Shakes - Strictly Game
This is the kind of song that I was expecting more of this round. Nice energetic indie pop/rock, quite polished but not without a raw edge to it, which is cool with me. Plenty catchy, and I particularly like the rhythm section behind it. Cool. Cool cool cool.
4 points
Zantera - First Aid Kit - To a Poet
I've actually seen this band (opened for Bright Eyes) but I don't remember much and haven't checked out their studio material too much so that's okay. They're nice female singer-songwriter tunes, as I remembered, and this is no different. Excellent vocals.
4 points
Gorille - Skindred - Ratrace
This. I like this, actually. Loads of energy, definitely perfect for the theme, and the singer's style and skill is quite impressive. The instrumentation is fairly standard mainstream metal style, which would usually annoy me, but it works very well here for some reason. Reminds me of Coheed and Cambria for some reason, but with much more energy and even weirder pronunciation.
5 points
Sonatafanica - FUCKING WEREWOLF ASSO - III
This song has no right to work as well as it does. The weird synths, high shouting vocals, and dance-type beats are all perfectly awkward together. The whole song is kind of awkward, but in a good way, if that makes any sense. Anyway, it worked really well for the round and made me want to shout along with the singer about whatever the fuck he/she(?) was yelling about.
5 points
Ariich - Caravan Palace - Suzy
I've heard a lot of this band here and there. (Mostly on the DTF turntable things) and their style is definitely captivating. I'm never entirely sure whether they're taking it seriously or not, let alone whether or not I should, because while it sounds so ridiculous and hilarious it's also very well put together and absolutely made to dance to. Kickass song. I danced to it.

If you mean do they intend the music as serious art, then no. They're not a joke band, but it's not serious music either - they have a serious approach to making music that is groovy, fun and entertaining, if that makes sense.

No kidding... when an organizer goes 10 days without updating, their roulette should be put in the penalty box or something. I get that life can get in the way, but this one is 6 weeks in, and only completed three rounds? Come on, if you can't keep things moving, then get out of the way and let those on the waiting list go.
Seriously Seth, shit or get off the pot.

It's funny because it's not the first time this happens, I recall someone's top 50 albums having the same fate.

Sorry, I didn't exactly choose when to start this thing, and as you can see by my general activity on the forum it's a very busy time for me right now, and I also don't currently have a computer, which is a problem. Send someone else up, I guess, I'll officially postpone it. Sorry I couldn't make things work. No need to be all uppity about it.
-
At the same time it's not the end of the world if it takes time... there's 3 people going at the same time.
-
Has it really been six weeks? :lol
-
Almost. This started May 22nd.
Look, maybe my post came off a little more terse than intended, and for that I apologize. Marc's right, it's not the end of the world. And I know very well that real life is much more important than any online forum. None-the-less, this forum is a fun place, and clearly a place that many of us come to every single day, making it an important community to many. Given your track record Seth (you still have an unfinished Top 50 'lost in the ether'), going AWOL here kinda takes away the whole fun of this game we call Roulette - and prevents others from starting up. I guess I'd just be looking for a little courtesy towards others participating in this little game. The analogy I used of someone doing 40 in the left lane... you may not be in a hurry or see it as a big deal, but maybe the people behind you have a different outlook.
You say no need to get uppity, perhaps you should take your own advice. Everyone knows what "Fine." means. I get it from my wife all the time. ;)

I feel for you dude. I recall the weeks I've had to spent without a computer (when my computer got broken and I had to wait a week for new parts to arrive so I could build a new computer)... longest week of my life. :lol
On the other side I must say that I really enjoyed the roulette so far, so it's sad if you're putting it on hold. :/

How come you don't have a computer?
I'm happy to put this on hold until you've got a bit more time to be able to keep it up. :tup

Sweet. Looking forward to it.

Alright, we'll have just one or two more rounds after this to decide the winner, this thing's dragged on enough anyway. So here's round 4.
Zantera - Kaki King - Life Being What It Is - 7 points
I've heard a little bit of Kaki before, but I was kind of bored by the songs that I listened to, IIRC. But not this one. The guitar work is phenomenal and the quiet strings behind it are very subtle. Nothing to criticize here, just appreciation. I'll have to check out more of her work.
Sigz - Disemballerina - Hex - 5 points
More acoustic chamber stuff. The strings were fairly well arranged and had a nice tension/release feel. Apparently it's doom metal as well, which wasn't obvious at first, but the metal-esque guitar strumming towards the end definitely fit the genre at least loosely. Really cool hybrid of styles.
Gorille - Hôtel Morphée - Novembre est Mort - 8 points (!!!)
Yet another song with acoustic guitar and chamber strings. It seems to be a round theme so far. This one brought in a bit more intensity, though, with heavier drums and more emphatic vocals. ..and it was brilliant. I understand enough French to have a general idea of what she was saying. Beautiful arrangement, beautiful voice.
Antigoon - Ben Kweller - Ballad of Wendy Baker - 5 points
...And again, acoustic guitar/chamber strings, haha. This guy has a perfect voice for the music he's making, and the songs he's singing is a very nice, mellow ballad. Not much else to say, good songwriting and a good performance.
Sonatafanica - Sleigh Bells - You Lost Me - 7 points
Definitely broke the acoustic trend. It's electronic, 80s-sounding, and very strangely enchanting. The vocals have a really cool sound/effect to them, and it's got a really nice story behind it. Probably the saddest song I've gotten this round, and one of the best.
Ravenheart - Gary Numan - The Seed of a Lie - 5 points
This song is very minimal. It was mostly just a very simple electronic drum beat along with a few sparse synth lines. It definitely has its own charm, though, despite its simplicity, and I think that mostly has to do with his voice, which has a distinctively nice sound.
Ariich - Alan Parsons Project - Old and Wise - 6 points
Really nice 80s sounding ballad. The quiet guitar/synth lines in the background really made the song. I also have a soft spot for 80s saxophone-y solos, and this song had a nice one.
Orcus - The Antlers - Putting The Dog To Sleep - 7 points
For the future, I do encourage a quick last fm check, but I know you were busy and everything so it's fine. Besides, I am quite the Hospice fan but I haven't listened to Burst Apart as much as I should. Especially this song. Peter's voice is especially wonderful, and the lyrics are some of their most touching.

Ravenheart - Loreena McKennitt - Dante's Prayer
I thought this to be some gothic classical piece from the first moments, what with the dark choir movement. It became more of a pop ballad as it progressed, but a very good one. I love a good cello, as most people are aware of, and this song made very good use of it. It sounded like it could fit on Lord of the Rings in that kind of melodramatic style, but not in a bad way. It faded very nicely back into the classical style from whence it came, as well.

Gorille - Macklemore and Ryan Lewis - Wings
The production for this song caught me immediately. Perfect balance of electronic and organic. The guy rapping has a nice, distinctive sound, and the lyrics are clever. My favorite part about the song is the frequent transition of moods that really catch you off guard at times. Everything about the song is awesome, actually. I'm not usually a fan of gang vocal choruses, but I had no complaints here. I also appreciate the change of styles from what I've usually gotten.

Sigz - I Would Set Myself on Fire for You - Six
Hmm. First of all, the viola and the female vocals were really cool additions to this kind of music and felt very natural in the overall presence. I listen to a fair share of Screamo and Emo, and they know what they're doing, undoubtedly. This song just kind of lacked anything for me to really grab onto... the little breakdown section bordered on annoying and the verses didn't really offer anything either. The lyrics are well written, but I think they might be forcing maturity too much (something screamo bands seem much more easily forgiven for) in the manner of writing. It's still a cool band though, from the sound of it. The chick has a nice voice.

Orcus - The Dillinger Escape Plane - Mouth of Ghosts
I've heard a bit of Dillinger here and there, and every song sounded very different from the others. This one was no exception. The beginning is very unsettling and jazzy. I was expecting it to explode early, but it went for the build up instead, which I was glad to hear, since avant garde bands sometimes tend to try too hard to force randomness on you. It eventually reached a very high level of intensity, but it was a slow and exciting climb. One of the best songs I've gotten in this roulette.

Sonata - Husker Du - Indecision Time
Pretty blistering punk song. The distorted guitar riffs border on metal, but the vocals are definitely punky. Oh, and "wipe your shit all over your hands" was an awesome line. The shreddy guitar solo was kind of surprising but it made sense enough and added to the energetic intensity.

Zantera - Sleeping at Last - Watermark
A nice change of pace. The piano line is very pretty. The singer has a fairly typical voice for his style of music, but it fits very well. The string arrangements are very nice. Very pleasant song.

Antigoon - Elephant Revival - Point of You
More pretty folk music. This one had really nice instrumentation. I like the folkier string instruments being put to use, it has a very "earthy" sound to it. There are nice solos too from lots of different instruments. It went by very quickly - even faster than its 3 minute length would suggest, but it was a very nice 3 minutes. The vocals were sparse, and didn't really seem to the be focus of the song, but they were nice.

Ariich - Bizali - Uh-huh
Definitely one of the funnest songs I've gotten. This song was very funky. The instrumentation was awesome - there were some very cool, subtle rhythm changes. The focus is the voice, though. She's got a really nice one, and she's backed by some excellent musicians on top of that. Song was awesome, and it was nice to have something relatively less on the serious side compared to other submissions.

Glad you liked it Seth! Bizali are amazing (or were, not sure they're even still going now) - that album is one of my favourites, has quite a lot of variety. Lots of it is really funky and fun, but other songs are more mellow or more serious. And yeah, the singer's voice is just so damn good. I actually know the drummer, and met the band a few times as they were all at my uni. Such a shame they never got signed though.
BRING ON THE SPECIAL ROUND

If it's any consolation I checked out the rest of the album afterwards since you said it needed context and there were some songs I really dug on it. (Twelve and Three)

Okay, final round, gonna change it up a bit.
Open theme. You can wager up to half of your total score on your song being above a 6. 6 means no change. Below means that you lose the points.
-
Above a 6? I've never achieved that previously, so I think that's a little ambitious. :lol
-
Yeah, it's a risky wager. The reason is that I didn't want the lower ranks betting everything just with nothing to lose and then winning on a 5 or something like that. No wager is required. It's just an extra option if you're really confident that your song will kick my ass.
-
Sent, but I actually managed to forget to wager. :lol I'm pretty special sometimes.
Follow-up PM on its way.

Song sent.
