Title: Genesis Survivor 2012 - Results & Discussion
Post by: The Letter M on March 18, 2012, 12:48:05 PM
In celebration of Genesis' 45th Anniversary, I've decided to do a Genesis Survivor here!

As we go through each album, I will update their respective survivor results as they are finished.

Each of the band's main 15 albums will be represented, as well as Survivors for Gabriel-Era B-Sides, Collins-Era B-Sides, and Wilson-Era B-Sides, and then Consolation Rounds for all the Third Place songs in the album survivors, and the finally, 40 songs will move onto the Finals.

As a note, the TOP FOUR songs from The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway will advance to the finals (as it is a lengthy double album, I did the same for past double albums). In addition to that, the Top 2 Gabriel-Era B-Sides, the Top 3 Collins-Era B-Sides, and the Top 1 Wilson-Era B-Side will all advance (a total of 6 B-Sides in the Finals).

Holy crap, this is going to take a while.  I guess it's a good thing that it's only one day per round, even if that means I don't get to vote sometimes.

:lol Yep, but I'm okay with it. I spent nearly a YEAR doing the Marillion Survivor, and at best, had an average of 3 vote(r)s per round near the end, so if I can at least double that participation through the end of this, I'll be happy.

So far, at least 10 people have voted in every round since the start of Trespass, and I hope to keep that up til at least We Can't Dance!

It makes sense, though.  I'm sure there are more people familiar with Genesis than with Marillion.  I have some Marillion, and it's good stuff, but I don't know if I listen to it enough to have strong opinions on individual songs.  Not like with Genesis, which I've been listening to for 35 years.

Too bad I missed this until now as I'm not as familiar with collins albums. At least I can vote on my favorite album: The lamb :)

Updated with the results of the SEBTP Survivor. Oddly enough, in the last round, "The Cinema Show" took the most votes, crowning "Firth Of Fifth" the top song of SEBTP. It really could have gone either way.

Why do you "oddly enough"?

Why do you "oddly enough"?

Well for me, I always felt like many fans thought "The Cinema Show" was the best track on the album, but "Firth Of Fifth" is a very good contender. I don't think I could pick a favorite of the two, but I voted off FOF.

Ah.  Well, they're both great songs, my favorites from this album.  As I said in the survivor thread itself, I prefer the live version of "The Cinema Show" but the studio version of "Firth of Fifth".

:tup Good call! The Collins-Era stuff has some really good proggy songs in it, while having great pop tunes, and the playing still holds up (even up through We Can't Dance, like in "Fading Lights").

Question for anyone still following the Genesis Survivor - I know I am only about to start Abacab, but I was thinking ahead to the self-titled album.

Should I make "Home By The Sea" and "Second Home By The Sea" one option/track/choice, or keep them separate as they were tracked separately on the original album?

They have been released as one track (The Way We Walk Vol 2: The Longs and Live Over Europe), but going by the original studio album, they are two, and I have gone by the original studio album releases for many songs that have been tracked seamlessly (like the opening 3/closing 2 songs on Duke, the last 3 songs on Wind & Wuthering, and "The Cinema Show"/"Aisle of Plenty").

Thoughts? Got about a week before Genesis's survivor begins, so let me know what you guys think! Thanks!

Survivors have traditionally kept to the original track listings as a rule, so I'd say keep Home by the Sea in two parts, even though I have always thought of them as one song anyway.  The stupid thing is that I know that for me, the separate parts are individually weaker than some other tracks on the album, whereas together they win IMO.  But I think for consistency's sake they should be separate.

This has been my thought, as well. With a few more responses, I think I'll do as I was going to anyway and keep the song halves separated in the survivor.

Added results for Genesis and Invisible Touch. Only the rest of We Can't Dance and all of ...Calling All Stations... to go before we finish the studio albums!

As an update, after CAS, we'll launch into 3 Survivors for B-Sides - Gabriel-Era, Collins-Era and Wilson-Era. Each Survivor will start with multi-song elimination rounds, just to get through them a bit quicker.

After the B-Sides Survivors, we'll have the Consolation Rounds, where 2 out of 15 songs will move into the Finals!

So, two songs that weren't good enough to make the original studio albums will automatically get to the final 15 here?  Okay. :lol

And how many people here actually know all of those songs?

Final 15?

The Finals for this Survivor will contain 40 songs total, 32 of which include the Top 2 songs from each album (Top 4 in the case of TLLDOB), while the remaining 8 come from the Top 2 Consolation Songs and the 6 from the B-Sides, which, considering the strength of some of the B-sides, it's well-deserved. Some B-sides like "Inside And Out", are probably tons better than some of the Top 2 Finals-eligible songs from the main Studio Albums.

Either way, including only 6 B-Sides compared to 34 Studio Album Tracks isn't such a bad ratio - Only 15% of the Final 40 will be B-Sides, and if people don't like them, they can vote for them when we reach the Finals. I just wanted to give the B-sides a chance since Genesis is a band with so MANY B-sides, every album from A Trick Of The Tail to Calling All Stations has at least one B-side (except the self-titled album).

Luckily, I'm doing multi-vote rounds for the first couple rounds of each B-Sides survivor, so hopefully that will weed out the lesser-known/liked ones.

Added the results for WCD and CAS as we move on to a trilogy of B-Sides Survivors. We're in the home-stretch, guys, and after a week or two of B-Sides, and then a couple weeks of Consolation rounds, we'll move in to THE FINALS, some time in August I'd predict, which should run into September, after about 6 months from this Survivor's start!

Thanks to everyone who has participated so far and has continued to do so!  :tup

Everybody brush up on the 40 Final Songs (listed in BLUE in the top post) and get ready for 39 rounds/days of Genesis Survivor Finals!

Glad I could help! It's been a long, but fun ride. I thought about following this up with a YES Survivor, but I think I'll let someone else handle that one. I've got some small DT ones to do, then Neal Morse/Spock's Beard Survivors to fill up 2013!

It's funny, though, I was all over Genesis when I started this Survivor, but haven't listened to them since before May!

Would there be interest in a "bonus round" where we take the worst song from each album and decide once and for all what song is THE worst genesis song? ;D In that case, I could arrange that. It would only have to be one round.

Say It's Alright Joe
Misunderstanding
Who Dunnit?
Illegal Alien
Invisible Touch
Tell Me Why
Small Talk

Looking at it, it's pretty tough. Tracks like "Window" and "Small Talk" might be as bad or worse than "Invisible Touch" and "Who Dunnit?"...

...actually, I don't think anything could be worse than "Who Dunnit?". I'll do this round after the last Finals round!

Wait, how is Misunderstanding the worst song from Duke and Robbery, Assault, and Battery the worst from A Trick of the Tail??

Wow, there's a lot of favourites of mine on that list.

For Absent Friends
Horizons
Robbery, Assault And Battery
Your Own Special Way
Misunderstanding
Illegal Alien
Invisible Touch
Tell Me Why

Those are all among my favourite Genesis songs. That's why I consider these survivors to be nothing more than just something fun to participate in, and not much else.

The Finals: Final Round Results:
Supper's Ready 12 (52.2%)
Firth Of Fifth 11 (47.8%)

By a matter of ONE VOTE, "Firth Of Fifth" wins the whole Survivor!!! :lol

Thanks again to everyone who participated! Glad I could do this and have fun! Now I go on to do some small DT-related Survivors, then in a couple of months, I will start up my Neal Morse Survivor!

Wow, that was something.  Nearly seven months.  But in the end, the best song won, as it should be.  I'm honestly surprised.

Yeah, me too. I thought "Supper's Ready" would've won, but it was a close round, and I think, the most participation any round of the whole Survivor!

Now...who wants to do Yes?! Orbert? :lol I'd do it, but I think I want to do my Neal Morse and Spock's Beard Survivors again...unnnnlessssss there's a TON of fans who want a Yes Survivor. Then I'll think about it.

Anyone know when the last time a Yes Survivor was done here?

I have no idea, honestly.  But I'm a bit "Yessed out" right now, and the Yes Discography thread is any indication, DTF in general might be, too.  Things got kinda thin by the end there.

Good point. Had I not been doing the Genesis Survivor, I might have synched up a Yes Survivor in time with your Yes Discography Thread. Ah well. Missed opportunities.

It is good to see that you donīt at all agree with the broad public.
Top 5 Genesis tracks on Spotify

1. I Canīt Dance
2. Invisible Touch
3. Land of Confusion
4. Jesus He Knows Me
5. No Son of Mine

The list you have worked out together is so much better!

Don't understand the hate for Robbery Assault and Battery... and the love for Ripples...

The love for Ripples is easy.  It's a sad, beautiful song about something which we all must face, and which we all fear, so it resonates with everyone.  And the instrumental section is mesmerizing.

I'm with you on Robbery, Assault and Battery, though.  That one kicks ass.  The "chase scene" in 13/8 is amazing.

Every song on A Trick of the Tail kicks ass.  Genesis knew that they had to nail this one, their first without Peter, and I think they hit it out of the park.  The weakest song is probably the title track, and even that one has some intricacies and complexities that aren't apparent until you try to learn the song.  That's a tricky song right there, and it's the easiest one on the whole album.
