I'm sure a lot of you have seen this, but for those who haven't this is very precious footage from Dream Theater history - Majesty jamming in Mike Portnoy's basement in 1987! They were all around 20 years old (except for Charlie who was 36). Recorded in the winter of 1987, This is the full video of the band jamming, goofing around, and playing work-in-progress versions of songs that would end up on WDADU. Check it out!

Way cool! :tup
I'll have to check the rest of that out later tonight. Thanks for posting!

:tup :tup :tup

I didn't know this much footage existed, at least publicly. The only sad thing is that the quality of this recording actually sounds better than WDADU. :lol
-
BTW, I have 2 YouTube channels full of long live videos of prog rock and metal bands (mostly full shows). The two main bands I focus on are DT and Umphrey's McGee. Check them out:

Wow, good stuff! :tup

Note: these were not recorded in MP's basement DT rehearsed in basement of the Giordan Salon at this point in their career.

KM must have been a riot back in those days.
Charlie looks sooooo Italian :lol

Exactly! When I clicked the link, I thought it was probably a 10 minute thing cut out of some other 'out-there' kinda tapes, but it's 52:32!

:lol
That's so cool. Very noce video
-
Didn't really need all that bullshit at the beginning.
-
I *dare* somebody to call JMX "Loo Foo" at the next Meet 'n Greet :lol

He'll just sit there quietly as if nothing happened.
Just don't expect to make it safely through the parking lot after the show.

Sorry I put the full video up in its complete form. I didn't mean to inconvenience you by having to watch 3 minutes of "bullshit" out of a 52 minute video. Another approach would be to be grateful for the remaining 52 minutes, but I guess we don't all see the glass half full (or in this case, 47/50ths full) .

Man I had a few of the same posters on my wall. :lol
-
Thanks for sharing! :tup The vocal lines in the verses of TOWHTSTS seem a bit sloppy, good thing they were changed before the recording of WD&DU.

Watched the whole thing. Amazing footage! Who knew something like this would have ever even existed?! I wonder what other rarities exist, that possibly only Portnoy himself might even own...
It's weird to see them so young, but you really get a sense of who they are in this, and with the addition of our current perspective, it's interesting to see where they came from and how it helped them form who they grew up to be as musicians and as people.

Interesting point. Any guess as to where this was recorded, then?

Well I've had it for 8+ years I think, so I've known it's existed at least that long. :lol
This is a pretty popular bootleg video, I'm really surprised if this is the first time it has made it to youtube.

I'm guessing RaiseTheKnife means it was recorded in the basement of "Giordan Salon" (whatever that may be). I have no knowledge of this - the original torrent I downloaded way back when said it was MP's basement which is what I repeated. It makes more sense to me (I'm not sure why he would decorate a public rehearsal space with all of his personal posters), but I've been wrong before.

I still do (Well some (talking about Rush here) are still up, but most of them are in the closet). I never found that Peart Tama banner for less than $100 so I don't have that one.
If I recall correctly, it was Charlie who was selling copies of this video in the mid-90's and I believe that's how it got out.
I can't remember if any of that ended up as bonus footage of the Ytsejam Records DVD. (I have to pull that out one of these days. It's been a while since I've watched it)
-
Wow, never knew that it was Charlie who might have gotten this out. Funny thing is, didn't MP think Sherinian was responsible for leaking Metropolis Pt. 2 (original song demo)?
-
great stuff! i really like the 1st instrumental jam

Well at first, Mike said the Metropolis Part II demo would never see the light of day and he was pretty adamant about it. More so than just about any demo of his ever.
Then he changed his mind suddenly when he put it on the Ytsejam release. I'm not sure what would have changed his mind other than it being a selling point for the demo release.
-
He said it would never be released, but it had been circulating for years prior to the YtseJam release due to (according to MP) either DS or one of the producers leaking it.
-
That was amazing. Thanks for sharing

I love how JMX just keeps on practice and practice when the others just fuckin around all the time! :rollin
-
I'm going to watch this tonight :)
