Hey DTF! Had a thought in Bio class today. I think it would be awesome if we had a bunch of us play a game, and do some sort of bracket tournament. Start with one bracket, and divide into a winners and losers brackets. Then the winner of those two face off in a best of three championship.
The game I had in mind was Scramble With Friends. Each game consists of only 3 rounds, and each round is timed to two minutes. I think it would be perfect.
Your thoughts?

Cause if you do, my money is on Zep, but I'd certainly play. I play Words With Friends with quite a few DTF members. The nice thing with Words With Friends is that the only requirement be someone has Facebook, because I have a few friends who play through Facebook since they don't have smartphones.

Words with friends would take way too long, as well as requires a good amount of luck (in many cases), as well as being able to cheat in. Scramble with friends would be good because both opponents have the exact same boards, the games are quick, and you can't really cheat.

I find Scramble to be much more entertaining. It keeps you on the edge of your seat.

WE had a chess tourny once... and i was supposed to play someone for the winner of the tourny but we never played... i jsut remembered this now and am sad... :(

I don't cheat either, and Splent and Zep routinely beat me, although I know I beat Zep once (out of ten or so trys), and I think I beat Splent once as well. I only remember the time I beat Zep because I had a 155 point word in that game, "QUARTERS" with triple letter Q and R across triple word score and a 35 point bingo bonus. That one misplaced T is all I needed.
Most of the users here match up real well with me. Ytse, Jamesman, Elsydion, and Nick are others I play with.

I paid the 99 cents to avoid the ads.
The only problem with Words with friends is that you can take your time, which is great for casual settings because you play when you can - which is why I love it. I can play 20 games at once, and sometimes its rapid fire, other people moves are made every few hours. It's on your honor to not cheat, and the game is the ref so you don't have to worry about trying to play a word and losing your turn if its rejected. The only times I've been questioned about things are words that end in Q (just learn them, UMIAQ, SUQ, and TRANQ), and when I break out the science words. Trust me when I say I know what and azide is. I'm sure you have some nearby, and you're damn thankful of it as well.

So is this just for people who have smartphones, or can the Facebook people jump in too? DTF is literally the only thing in the universe that could get me to start playing Words With Friends.
EDIT: If we do an organized bracket, a really good way around the whole "taking too long" thing would be to impose a time limit of a few days (maybe a week), and whoever is winning by the end of the time period moves on.

I have updated the thread title, as well as started a list of all who want to participate (make sure I didn't forget you). I think we should try to get at least 10 members to commit. Because of the way the bracket will work, some people will get a second chance even if they loose. We will go by highest losers scores to determine who gets to keep going, so don't give up if you are getting your ass kicked :lol. I am thinking we set a game time limit of 2 or 3 days, what do you think?

I agree with this. We did best 2 of 3 with the chess tournament too, and there's not a shred of luck involved in that game. It'd make much more sense in something like this.

For the record, I'm pretty sure splent and I are fairly evenly matched. I haven't kept score or anything, but we've been playing for a few years now (first on FB Scrabble, now on Words) and I feel like I lose just as often as I win.

Check this shit, yo. So appearently my opponents can play words I am not allowed to. Jamesman has done it with "IZ" to me several times, but I finally got evidence. My opponent played FICE and EB simultaniously, so when I tried to play EB with another word that is valid, it denied me.

DTVT I've.something similar happen to me, but with it jacking points. Once I was supposed to get 116 points, but it cut it off at 100, yet it gave my opponent a 150 points. I got pissed it jipped me.

Wtf? "eb" and "iz" are definitely not valid words. I've heard there are ways to hack the dictionary, so maybe that's what's going on?

Sweet! That's 12. So I'm thinking the best way to do this is to just put all 12 names in a hat and draw them randomly, and the match ups will be played in the order they come out. First round will be 6 games, second round will be 3 games. Then we'll have three people left. Whichever of those three got the highest score in their second round game will get a bye, and the other two will play each other, then the final will be the remaining two. Sounds good? (If somebody has a better way of doing it, I'm open to ideas... this was just the best I could think of).

Exactly why I suggested it. We could have 4 pools of 3, or 2 pools of 6. From there we can make a final bracket of 4 or 8. The other advantage of pools is that you could play all your pool opponents at once in a best of 3 so it wouldn't take that much longer than playing one opponent at a time.

For round three. You'll have three competitors from round two. Of the three remaining, the two that won their matches with the fewest games played in round two advance to the finals.

Margin of victory would be the tie-breaker. Total points isn't a good indicator because one match might require more defense than another, But if three people finish with identical 3 and 3 records, Player A had a point differential of +24 points, Player B had a point differential of -14 points, and player B had a point differential of -10 points, then Player A would win the pool, with Player C being second place, and B third.
I'm not a fan of how Chino decides how people get to the finals from round 3.

The winners of each pool will be determined by the method in the above post. Semi-Finals will be Best of 3 matches between the winners off Pool 1 vs. Pool 2 and Pool 3 vs. Pool 4. Finals will be the winners of each of these two matches in a final best of 5 match.
For the first round, each person in the pool will be responsible for starting a game against the person below them in their pool. So, for example, in Pool 1, Splent would start a game against me, I would start a game against senecadawg, and senecadawg would start a game against Splent. After the game is over, post your final scores.

Senecadawg and I just finished our game. I just barely squeaked out a 383 - 373 victory. It came down to the last move... haven't had a game that intensely close for a very long time. He took an early lead, then it took me maybe five or six turns to claw back into contention, and from that point on I'm pretty sure the lead changed back and forth with every single move until the last.

Great game man. Very fun and hard fought on both sides. If my game with Splent is anywhere close to that level of intensity I will be pleased, win or lose. Although hopefully I win :)

I have to say I just got really lucky with that oilcup word. Silly compound words.

Incidentally, please try to actually play all of your games through until the end. It's especially important in the first round, where point differential could be the deciding factor. If you resign your game and end it early, it has the potential to affect the results.

It was crazy close for the first half of the game, then he played a 7-letter word and it sorta just spiraled out of control from there....

You both are very worthy opponents... I knew it was going to be close with zep but then I just got the right letters at the right time. It happened a couple of times with Seneca... I played a 7 letter word then he played Joey on a triple word (with the j on triple letter) and I knew it was over lol

Update:
Splent has won Pool 1 via point differential. All three of us went 1-1, but the final point differentials were: Splent +79, senecadawg2 +57, ZeppelinDT -136.
Also - if we do this again and end up with pool play, I think next time the first round should consist of two games per pairing (so a total of 4 games per person in the first round rather than 2). 2 games seemed to just go by way too fast.

Splent has won Pool 1 via point differential. All three of us went 1-1, but the final point differentials were: Splent +79, senecadawg2 +57, ZeppelinDT -136.
Also - if we do this again and end up with pool play, I think next time the first round should consist of two games per pairing (so a total of 4 games per person in the first round rather than 2). 2 games seemed to just go by way too fast.

Sciopath has won Pool 2 with a 2-0 record.
Splent and Sciopath now play each other in a best of 3 match and the winner goes to the finals.
Pool 3 still has two games to be completed (Implode v. Accelerando and Accelerand v. Ben_Jamin)
Dublagent66 has won Pool 4 with a 2-0 record.
Once the final results for Pool 3 are in, the winner will play Dublagent66 in a best of 3 match, and the winner will go to the finals.

I got my ass stretched in my two games. The only complaint I have with WWF is that a lot of it can be dictated by luck. When you go 3 or for turns with nothing but vowels it's really easy to have no chance at recovering. I would love to get a Scramble With Friends tournament going!

I've been thinking about the best way to handle this. I'm curious to see what people think regarding who starts first. My thought is that maybe going forward, whoever has the best record (or point differential) from the previous round gets to choose who starts the first game, and then you go back and forth after that.
Wasn't sure if that was too much though. The other option is to just let the players decide for themselves. I've heard some people claim that there is an advantage to making the first move, although I personally prefer to go second if given the choice. But I don't particularly think it makes a real difference either way.

Yeah, that's part of the reason I think that for the next tournament, if we do pool play, then the first round will be two games against each opponent rather than one (or a best of 3 if a standard tournament play)
