Title: Heretic's Top 50 Albums v. The DTForums Are Raging Inside Me
Post by: Heretic on January 29, 2012, 09:31:45 AM
Welcome to Heretic's
TOP 50 ALBUMS OF ALL TIME

Alright, I guess it's my turn, now, so here we go. What I would call my favorite 50 albums of all time, totally my opinion and whatnot. I know some of you will enjoy the list more than others, but hopefully it'll be a fun ride for all. Artists do repeat themselves a few times, and I'm sure my top 5 will be pretty predictable, but in any case, let's get going! Before we start the list, here's a few albums that didn't quite make the cut, but are awesome in any case.

Agalloch - The Mantle
Brand New - Deja Entendu
Alter Bridge - Blackbird
As I Lay Dying - The Powerless Rise
Between the Buried and Me - The Silent Circus
Boston - Boston
Ever Forthright - Ever Forthright
Opeth - Ghost Reveries
Porcupine Tree - Stupid Dream
Steven Wilson - Grace for Drowning
Thrice - The Artist in the Ambulance
Avenged Sevenfold - Avenged Sevenfold
A Lot Like Birds - Conversation Piece
Foxy Shazam - Foxy Shazam
Mastodon - Leviathan
Protest the Hero - Kezia
The Devil Wears Prada - Zombie EP
Porcupine Tree - Signify
Cloudkicker - Let Yourself Be Huge
Seventh Wonder - Mercy Falls
Coheed and Cambria - GAI
The Tallest Man on Earth - Sometimes the Blues is Just a Passing Bird EP
Sigur Ros - ( )

In just a bit I'll update with 3 albums, hopefully I can update at least once a day.

Thanks! You already know I feel the same about your musical taste as well!

In any case, here we go:

50. Kvelertak - Kvelertak

I was introduced to these guys through my friend Dark Castle, of course, and their album is one album that makes you want to grab a bunch of drinks, kick back, learn Norwegian, and have a blast. Every song is heavy, upbeat, and the songs have this classic rock feeling mixed with punk and black metal which just makes for an awesome conglomeration. I mean, seriously, any band that begins and ends their debut album by shouting their band name in unison is bound to be awesome. Plus, the lyrics apparently deal with Norse mythology, and, while you can't tell what they are saying, it's still pretty great.

Favorite songs: Fossegrim, Blodtųrst, Utrydd dei Svake

49. The Dear Hunter - The Color Spectrum

While this may be a collection of EPs, it's longer than most albums released, and therefore I feel that, due to it being fantastic, it definitely belongs here on my list. While a good number of the songs aren't the best thing the band has done, many of them are among the top songs, and it's definitely a landmark release for Casey. While the Green EP is my favorite, all of the EPs are well done and seem to suit their colors as best as possible. I definitely liked the different genres and experimentation showcased on this release, and I'd definitely like to see more of that in the next act, or whatever they decide to release next!

Favorite songs: The Canopy, Things That Hide Away, The Inheritance, She's Always Singing, Mandala, Progress, Home, I Couldn't Do it Alone, But There's Wolves?, Lillian

48. Counting Crows - August and Everything After

Counting Crows are a band that don't get much attention around here, and while that's to be expected, I do think more people should listen to this album. It's a really fantastic alternative rock offering, with everything from heartfelt and emotional lyrics to upbeat and catchy anthems, and overall, it's just a really nice album. "Mr. Jones" is probably one of their most popular songs, and it's always been one of my favorites. This album is a different kind of pick for me, but I really really enjoy it and it's been a staple ever since I heard it.

Favorite songs: Mr. Jones, Rain King, Round Here, Raining in Baltimore

Thanks! Yeah that cover is fantastic, it's by John Baizley, who's also a member of the band Baroness. His art is pretty fantastic.

I really like that Counting Crows album.  Recovering the Satellites is a good one too.

Yeah I really like all of their albums, but August is my personal favorite. They really need to come out with some new material.

Interesting start, The Color Spectrum is superb.
Checked out Kvelertak a while ago, but their album didn't do much for me on the first go, but I'm guessing that it requires a few spins, so I should probably spin it again. Haven't heard Counting Crows, but will check a few songs out.

You haven't heard Counting Crows?  Their big hit is Mr Jones, but they have lots of other great tracks too.

I actually recognized the song now when I listened to it, but the name "Counting Crows" doesn't tell me much. :P
Could have heard some songs by them when I was much younger, but nothing in latter years.

Yeah, Kvelertak was definitely a grower, but once you start paying attention to all the crazy riffage and whatnot, it really starts to come together. It's an awesome album. Counting Crows are very good, you should definitely check out the album I mentioned.

This update is strictly post-rock, coincidentally. I guess most of my favorite post-rock albums weren't albums that made such a significant impact on me that they warrant incredibly high spots, but they're all still fantastic albums that I love.

47. God is an Astronaut - All is Violent, All is Bright

God is an Astronaut is one of those bands who makes consistent, very well made post-rock. I enjoy all of their albums to some extent, but All is Violent, All is Bright is their best release in my opinion, using the basic post-rock formula of building up to climaxes and making ethereal soundscapes. Overall, the entire album holds my attention and fills my ears with beautiful music.

Favorite songs: All is Violent, All is Bright, Remembrance Day, Forever Lost, When Everything Dies

46. Sigur Ros - Meš suš ķ eyrum viš spilum endalaust

Most everyone's favorite Sigur Ros album is either ( ), AB, or Takk... well, I guess I'm the odd man out on that one. This album showcases my favorite of Sigur Ros' work, slightly edging out ( ) as my favorite. 'Ara Batur' is definitely my favorite song the band has ever written, and the album is consistently beautiful. I love all of Sigur Ros' work, but Meš takes the cake for me.

Favorite songs: Ara Batur, Illgressi, Festival, Straumnes

45. Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven

And here we have Godspeed's best work in my opinion. While their previous album showcased the end of the world recorded on soundtrack, Skinny Fists surpasses that in my opinion. Godspeed's songs are usually very long and in parts, much like orchestrated works, and I find that they are definitely one of the premiere post-rock bands. Skinny Fists, like F#A#∞, uses samples to further add atmosphere to the work, and it is done perfectly. I really hope we'll hear some new music from these guys soon, as they are definitely one of my favorites.

Favorite songs: All of them

3 amazing picks. While "Med sud" is only my 4th favorite SR-album, it's still very solid.
The other two are albums I consider to be the best by their respective bands, and pioneer/classic albums that should be notorious for every Post-Rock fan to have, so two amazing picks there as well.  :tup

44. Maybeshewill - I Was Here For a Moment, Then I Was Gone

Maybeshewill is another post-rock band who makes beautiful music. My list has a lot of post-rock on it, yes, I know, but it's one of my favorite genres ever, and I'm a sucker for well done, beautiful instrumental music... This album was released last year and it has quickly become one of my favorite instrumental albums to listen to. The usage of piano, violin, etc. really adds to the beauty of the music.

Favorite songs: Red Paper Lanterns, Accolades, To the Skies From a Hillside

43. Protest the Hero - Fortress

While I love every album Protest the Hero has put out, Fortress is most certainly my favorite. Why? The album features a maturing from their sound on Kezia, combined with fantastic songwriting, and the typical chaotic yet melodious structures. I adore Rody's vocals here, him using his vast vocal range, going from high pitched wails to low death-growls and everything in between. I first heard the band from the song "Sequoia Throne," and while I didn't pay much attention to their other stuff, I loved that song. Eventually, I checked out Fortress and Kezia (and Scurrilous when it came out) and I was hooked. Awesome band, awesome album.

Favorite songs: Sequoia Throne, Bloodmeat, Bone Marrow, Palms Read

42. Porcupine Tree - Lightbulb Sun

The first Porcupine Tree album to appear, Lightbulb Sun! Despite preferring the latter half of Steven Wilson's work, I have to give a lot of credit to the pre-In Absentia days, as both Lightbulb Sun, Stupid Dream, and Signify are great albums. I love the focus on songwriting on Lightbulb Sun as well. The album contains some of my favorite PT songs, such as The Rest Will Flow, Feel So Low, Shesmovedon, Russia On Ice, the title track, and so forth. The album is truly beautiful and simplistic, and it definitely sits near the top of my PT album rankings. Hopefully Steven Wilson can find the same magic he had on this and Stupid Dream on the next PT album!

Favorite songs: The Rest Will Flow, Feel So Low, Lightbulb Sun, Shesmovedon, Russia On Ice

41. Coheed and Cambria - Good Apollo, I'm Burning Star IV, Volume Two: No World for Tomorrow

A lot of C&C fans don't really like this album or think it's on the lower spectrum of their best albums, but it's honestly my second favorite by these guys. It was the first album by them I heard in full and loved (after the vocals grew on me) and though eventually I grew to like a different record by them even more, I still enjoy this one immensely. Combining catchy choruses and hooks with prog elements and armed with one of the most unique voices in the industry, Coheed really made a pretty awesome album. Honestly, GAI has grown on me and almost surpassed this album, and it's entirely possible it will before the end of the year, but ah well.

Favorite songs: Mother Superior, Feathers, The Running Free, No World For Tomorrow

40. Bon Iver - Bon Iver, Bon Iver

Bon Iver is a poetic name in itself. Looking it up, you'll find that it's French for something along the lines of "good winter." Winter is a good definition for the sound of a lot of his music, actually. This album in particular has less of the "cold" feeling his previous album, For Emma, Forever Ago, had, as it adds more warm instrumentation and whatnot, but the beauty captured on the previous album is captured here, and in an even better way. Justin Vernon's voice is one that some love and some hate, and personally while I don't think it's the best voice out there, it suits the music pretty well and adds to the beauty of it, so it works. Bon Iver is a good example of an artist who has caught mainstream attention and who deserves it completely, in my opinion.

Favorite songs: Holocene, Beth/Rest, Towers, Calgary

39. Sleepmakeswaves - ...and so we destroyed everything

More post-rock? GTFO Heretic.

Seriously, though, this is my second-to-last post-rock album on this list! I promise! Sleepmakeswaves are actually my favorite band in the post-rock genre at the moment. I love every piece of music they've released, and, although they've only released one album, it was great enough to be included on this list. When I want to listen to post-rock, this is basically my go-to album for it, and my go-to album for introducing people to the genre. Every piece of music on this album is lush, beautiful, and moving. There's a few vocals, and samples as well, and they're both used fantastically. Everything about the album works. Even the cover matches the music, somehow. If not for one more post-rock album, it'd be my favorite of the genre, and could be my favorite in time to come. Definitely check it out if you're a fan of the genre and haven't heard it yet.

Favorite songs: a gaze blank and pitiless as the sun, to you they are birds, to me they are voices in the forest, (hello) cloud mountain, ...and so we destroyed everything

I really dig this list so far man, very similar tastes to my own!  Your list of albums that didn't quite make the cut is full of great stuff, so I'm eager to see what else actually made the list.

Very interesting that you prefer Good Apollo vol. 2 to vol. 1, very uncommon in Coheed fans as you said.  It's a great album, as are all of Coheed's album, but I do prefer vol. 1 in every way.  You mentioned that vol.1 is still growing on you so maybe in time you will see the light  :P

BROWN ALBUM ART UPDATE.

38. The Dear Hunter - Act II: The Meaning Of, And All Things Regarding Ms. Leading

While The Color Spectrum reared its head a bit back in my list, there's still one more album by TDH that I feel tops it; Act II is an album that basically perfects their sound, full of melodic, catchy songs, fantastic musicianship, and entertaining lyrics. It took me a while to learn to love the music, and once Red Hands clicked with me, it became one of my favorite songs ever. Casey has a really good voice, and he's just overall a really talented dude. I can't wait to see what cards he plays next.

Favorite songs: Red Hands, Black Sandy Beaches, Evicted, The Lake and the River

37. Scale the Summit - The Collective

Scale the Summit are an interesting band-- they're basically just an instrumental prog metal band, but they're so much more. Adding ambience and almost post-rock influences in their work, Scale the Summit creates a sound that a lot of instrumental bands don't have. This album in particular I find to be their best work, perfecting their sound overall and creating a wonderful atmosphere throughout all of their songs. Some of the songs do make me wonder what they'd sound like with vocals, as at times I even get a BTBAM feeling from the songs. The Collective, in summary, is fantastic. Check it out if you haven't. They've also just released a new song to go with the album on vinyl, called Redwoods, and it's really really good.

Favorite songs: Whales, Gallows, Black Hills, Alpenglow

36. Haken - Visions

When I first listened to Aquarius by Haken, I really liked it, but there were a good number of aspects that made me feel like the album could be improved, by a lot. Visions does this. It removes overly circus-like sections when they're uncalled for, the harsh vocals that seemed so out of place are gone, and everything just seems more cohesive and works together. The concept is one that works for the album, and, though it's hard to tell what's happening lyrically at times, the lyrics are still solid and fit the music. Deathless is perhaps one of my favorite songs of 2011. Overall, the album is full of fantastic progressive metal music, and I can't wait to see where these guys go, as this is only their second offering.

Favorite songs: Deathless, Nocturnal Conspiracy, The Mind's Eye, Visions

The Dear Hunter is a great pick. Act II is my favorite, so it's really nice to see it on the list. Took a few spins to fully appreciate it, but it became my favorite after 3-4 spins perhaps, slightly more consistent and with higher highs then the other Act-albums.
Scale the Summit was actually on my radar through all of 2011 since I heard good things about that album, but I never got around to checking it out. Not sure why, I'm quite the Post-Rock lover, but from what I read it was more instrumental Prog then Post-Rock, so I guess I lost some interest due to that. Will probably check it out eventually though.

Haken is a band that I don't quite like to be honest. My dad has both their albums and so I've heard them both in the car. I'll admit that I enjoyed Visions more then I had expected, though it still didn't do much for me. Aquarius on the other hand represented everything I don't like with Prog Metal, lots of long songs where I felt consistency wasn't included. There were lots of twists and turns, and I felt the songs lacked identity, there was no link in the songs, the beginning and the outro and everything in between was just a blur. Visions was slightly better on that hand, but I don't really care for that particular style of Progressive Metal anymore. Probably because I'm not much of a solo-person, so when the trademark guitar/keyboard-solos and all that kick in, I get bored. :P

Thanks for the horns, guys, I appreciate it. I was performing in a regional swim meet today (we did fantastic!) and so I will try and update tomorrow.

@Zantera: yeah, I'm not a huge fan of the typical "prog metal" sounding bands, but Dream Theater and Haken pretty much sit atop my favorites as I feel they are the best of the genre and perform the music quite well. Then again, I didn't really think that about Haken until Visions because of the same problems you mentioned with Aquarius.

I suck with this whole "update frequently" thing. I hope I don't become like one of those lists that are lost in ether, that's a scary place, man.

35. Periphery - Periphery

Periphery is a band that initially I thought was alright, but grew on me, a lot. Their self-titled debut is absolutely glorious. Whether or not you like calling "djent" a genre, the band has been labeled that, and while I'm not a huge fan of the term, I do think their music stands out of the crowd of music that sounds similar to it (i.e. Textures, Ever Forthright, Volumes, etc.) While I have a feeling they are going to showcase a more progressive metal and creative sound on their forthcoming albums, I still love the sounds here and therefore it makes my top albums of all time.

Favorite songs: Jetpacks Was Yes!, Racecar, Letter Experiment, Icarus Lives

34. Dream Theater - A Dramatic Turn of Events

Time for the haters to hate, dawgs! ADTOE is my third favorite DT album, and the first to be showcased on this list. From the first time I heard it, I had a feeling it would solidify itself somewhere near the top of my rankings, and after having a good while to let it sink in, I'm certain it's one of their best. Whether or not you like it, it's hard to deny that the album is a return to DT's progressive roots and is a refreshing album. Breaking All Illusions is perhaps my 3rd favorite song they've ever done, and Beneath the Surface is top 10 material as well. Every song is a pleasure to listen to, in my opinion, and I can't wait to see where they go with Mangini from here on out!

Favorite songs: Breaking All Illusions, Beneath the Surface, Bridges in the Sky, On the Backs of Angels

33. Mono - Hymn to the Immortal Wind

And here we have my favorite post-rock album of all time. (Yes, this is the last post-rock album to make this list, you can stop pointing and laughing now.) Hymn to the Immortal Wind was my pick for the DTF album of the week thread, and here's what I had to say about it there:

"I don't know how many of you have heard this album here (I'm sure Zantera has ) but upon first listen, Hymn to the Immortal Wind completely blew me away. For those who aren't familiar with post-rock, Mono is a Japanese band who does the genre very well, especially on this album.  While a ton of post-rock bands have violins, pianos, etc. on their albums, Mono went balls to the wall with this album and hired an entire orchestra to make the album sound like an immaculate work of art. And, that it does! The instrumental post-rock sound is there, but it is enhanced by the orchestrated sounds. The entire album has a feeling of majesty to it, and I feel like even if you're not a huge fan of post-rock, if you can appreciate beautiful music, you can appreciate this album. I know it isn't the most obscure thing possible to pick as my album of the week, but it's an album that I've been listening to constantly over the past few weeks and I'm hoping some of you might feel the same way I do about it."

And that's about it. It's a beautiful, beautiful album, and the staple of the post-rock genre for me. Check it out.

Favorite songs: All of them

Haken took out all the silly circus parts, you say?  That's a good start.  I might have to give the new one a listen then.

Yeah, it's toned down a good bit on Visions. I love it a lot, it'd probably rank higher if I did this list in a few months from now.

Anyways:

32. Mastodon - Crack the Skye

Mastodon have become one of my favorite bands in the last few months and Crack the Skye is what started it all. This album is a concept album done to a T, and it's definitely a staple of the prog genre. It differs from their older stuff in many ways, but still manages to sound like Mastodon, and, an improved Mastodon at that. The concept is one that is hard to follow at times, and you can read about it online, but half of the time you are lost in the wonder of the mystical sounds of the music rather than paying any attention to the storyline. I've yet to hear anything like this album in terms of atmosphere, and it's definitely one of Mastodon's best.

Favorite songs: The Czar, Oblivion, Quintessence, The Last Baron

31. 30 Seconds to Mars - This is War

This album is a strange one to be on this list, and I'll probably get a few "lol"'s, but I don't really give a flip. I don't really like any of the bands' material prior to this album and I don't really ever listen to this anymore these days, but when it came out in early 2010 I couldn't get enough of it. The album is full of anthem-rock songs, some almost progressive in nature, and all very catchy and full of energy. The album showcases a heavy usage of a boy choir, which adds to the whimsical feeling of freedom some of the songs capture. Even the more darker songs don't entertain depressing lyrics or atmosphere; the whole album in a nutshell is a call to arms, and is just a very interesting, catchy album.

Favorite songs: Closer to the Edge, This is War, Kings and Queens, Hurricane

30. August Burns Red - Leveler

August Burns Red are my favorite metalcore band, if you don't count BTBAM as metalcore (I personally don't.) In any case, Leveler is an album that shows ABR progressing as a band and maturing in many ways; no longer settling for typical breakdowns or basic song structures, the songs on Leveler are in many ways experimental, interesting, and differ from the genre in many ways. Salt & Light in particular is a song that's unlike any ABR have done before, featuring an unusual song structure, and choir vocals at the end-- not to mention, the song is uplifting in nature, something the metalcore genre doesn't see often. In fact, the album itself features more riffs in the major key, and more songs that contain happier-sounding sections. Overall, the album is a great step forward for the band, and seals their place at the top of metalcore's foodchain.

Favorite songs: Salt & Light, Carpe Diem, Pangaea, Internal Cannon

Crack the Skye was the first Mastodon I ever listened to, and a great choice!  I still need to check out August Burns Red yet, would  Leveler be a good place to start or should I start further back in their discography?

I wasn't that into Crack the Skye sadly. To me, Blood Mountain and Leviathan are Mastodon's best albums. :/

Yes! Leveler is a fantastic album, though not my favorite by them. Close, though. @Zydar, you should definitely check it out, it's a pretty rad album! Some meh songs, but the ones that are awesome... are awesome. Zantera, that's unfortunate... I do think Leviathan is fantastic, though, my 3rd favorite by the guys.

29. Porcupine Tree - In Absentia

Second favorite PT album right here! Lightbulb Sun and Stupid Dream have been creeping up behind it quickly, though, so who knows by this time next year. In any case, this was the first PT album I heard in full, and the first that finally got to me. At first, PT were a band I liked a few songs from, but didn't really care for the entire discography. It took a good while for the band to grow on me, but now they have, and I love their work; I think it was Deform to Form a Star from SW's solo album that really made me realize how beautiful SW's work was that got me to finally delve deeper into the discography and learn to love it. This album is among their best (except in Zantera's opinion :D) and showcases three of my favorite PT songs: Trains, Collapse the Light Into Earth, and Blackest Eyes. Overall, the album is a staple of PT's discography and an album any progressive fan should listen to!

Favorite songs: Trains, Collapse the Light Into Earth, Blackest Eyes, Heartattack in a Layby

28. Avenged Sevenfold - Nightmare

Avenged Sevenfold are the band that got me into music, but you'll hear a good bit about that later on in this list. For now, I'll just say that their music impacted me enough to start checking out lots of other stuff, which eventually got me where I am today, I suppose. However, no matter how my taste changes, I will always love these guys and their music. Nightmare was a fantastic release from 2010, one of my top albums of the year (Anathema released their best album that year, though, so not the best :P) and it was a definite step up from the self-titled in my opinion. A more return to the heavy metal sound that defined City of Evil fused with some of the more rock tendencies from the S/T and the typical experimentation, Nightmare was written at a time which makes the album even more recognizable-- the death of Avenged Sevenfold's drummer came in 2009, right as the album's writing had been underway. The album then changed from a concept album about who knows what to a different kind of concept album-- an album written as a tribute to their late best friend, and the band did it seamlessly. Everyone's favorite ex-Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy stepped in to record the drums for the album, him being one of the Rev's favorite drummers, and he does an excellent job on each song.

Overall, the album is very solid. It's a metal record, full of fast solos, heavy riffs, and blazing drums, while also containing slower ballads, melody in every corner, and even progressive elements. It's what makes these guys one of my favorite bands. The album closer "Save Me" shows what a genius the Rev was, being based off of some things he had written before. Save Me is like Avenged Sevenfold on Dream Theater steroids, and it closes the album majestically.

Favorite songs: Tonight the World Dies, Save Me, Buried Alive, So Far Away, Welcome to the Family

27. Opeth - Blackwater Park

Here's my second favorite Opeth album, Blackwater Park. Originally my favorite, this album was the first I heard in full by Opeth, and, contained the first song I'd heard from them in general (Harvest.) The album was produced by Mr. Steven Wilson, and his influence is definitely there. Bleak is my favorite song by Opeth, and it features SW on the song, too. What I love about the album is the atmosphere, the change between dark and light, heavy and soft, mixed with evil sounding growls, then accompanied by a soft, mellow voice. Opeth are a really interesting band, and they continue to grow on me with each listen, because each listen showcases new things in the songs I hadn't heard before. Blackwater Park is considered Opeth's magnum opus by lots of fans, and I can definitely see why.

Favorite songs: Bleak, The Drapery Falls, Blackwater Park, Harvest

Blackwater Park is a nice choice, pretty great album. Nightmare is also pretty cool, though the title-track annoys the hell out of me. In Absentia is good. It lacks dymanics and a flow, but if those things aren't interesting to the listener, and you only want a couple of sterile songs lined up after each other, then I guess it's nice. ;)

In Absentia: My #2 PT album after Deadwing, many great songs on it.

Blackwater Park: Awesome album, my #2 after Ghost Reveries. Bleak-Harvest-Drapery is one hell of a song sequence.

26. Cloudkicker - Beacons

Putting aside the fact this the album art for this wasn't on the site I've been using and it screws up my size resolutions for now....Beacons is my favorite instrumental album of all time. :lol Cloudkicker, the one man project of Ben Sharp, is literally one of the greatest instrumental acts out there-- and to make things even better, he offers all of his music for free! How much better can that get? Cloudkicker is more of a hobby, not a touring act or anything, but either way, the music is still fantastic. Incorporating everything from prog metal to post rock on his albums, Mr. Sharp truly creates a sound that is unique and interesting. Beacons has moments of incredible heaviness and moments of calm reflection to accompany it. It's a diverse album, and one of the best instrumental albums ever made, in my opinion.

Favorite songs: Push it way up!, ...it's just wide open field, We're goin' in. We're going down., Amy, I love you.

25. Alter Bridge - ABIII

Alter Bridge is a more mainstream rock act, yet they are about the pinnacle of that genre/sound. While their music doesn't present a new formula, it's not just hard rock made for the radio; it's made for the purpose of making music, for creation and fun. It also helps that Alter Bridge has an amazing singer in Myles Kennedy. ABIII is their third album, of course, and it's perhaps the heaviest. It's a very strong album, with lots of melody and catchy choruses, mixed in with occasional progressive tendencies and the token ballad. The album showcases AB's strengths very well, and, while it doesn't quite have a "Blackbird" track on the album, it does contain some of the bands' best work in any case. I can't wait to see what their next album holds; they're all very talented musicians.

Favorite songs: Words Darker Than Their Wings, Ghost of Days Gone By, Slip to the Void, Isolation, All Hope is Gone

24. The Tallest Man on Earth - The Wild Hunt

This album right here is just the definition of beautiful songwriting in its purest form. While it took me a while to appreciate the vocals, once they clicked, this album just shot up my list of favorites. Every song is wonderful, each containing lyrics that are personal, powerful, and just all around good. The vocal melodies are great, and the way Kristian Matsson picks the guitar so carefully paired with the way he enunciates is just fantastic. I can't personally think of a weak moment on the entire album-- everything is where it should be, and the way songs are placed, such as the melancholy Love is All right after the lovable and faster-paced King of Spain, just adds to the wonder of the album. Everything Matsson has released thus far has been very good, the most recent EP being one his best things yet. Great things are to come, I believe.

Favorite songs: Love is All, Burden of Tomorrow, King of Spain, A Lion's Heart, The Wild Hunt, The Drying of the Lawns

EDIT: ordered them wrong, WHOOPS.

Huge props for Cloudkicker and Tallest Man on Earth. Interestingly enough, I haven't really gotten familiar with "Beacons" yet. I've listened to The Discovery and Let Yourself Be Huge many times, but have only listened to Beacons once or something. But it's on my list for more spins. ;)
Tallest Man is one of my favorite singer/songwriters, his music just connects with me on a very emotional & personal level, and I'm really looking forward to his third album.

Yeah I'm 18. I'm not a huge fan of a lot of older music; while I enjoy some classic rock and whatnot, I'm just a lot more into things from the 90s and up. And if you're talking about the albums on here that are from 2010 and 2011, well I thought those were some of the best years for music in a long time.

Give me four years, and I guarantee this list will be completely different. But it would be for anyone. Give me 20 years to draw an enormous collection, it'd be even more different. That's expected. So if it's a problem that I'm including what you call more "recent" stuff, well I'm sorry, it's what I love and have collected over about 5 years of actually caring about music, and what I listen to the most whenever I listen to music, and it's a good way for me to document what I considered my best and look on it years from now and see how it compares, right?

I can pick a lot of albums on here that aren't from the past 2 years. There's a good number that are, too, but like I said, those years were absolutely fantastic for music. There's one 2010 album in my top 10! When it's released doesn't have anything to do with the kind of impact it makes on you and how much you personally enjoy it.

23. Dream Theater - Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence

Alright, here's my second favorite release from good ole' DT. SDOIT marked a sound change for the band; with Jordan in the band, they'd made SFAM, and on this album we see them taking that sound, perfecting it, and experimenting with it as well. I love the diversity of the first disc, and that's what makes this one of my favorites. None of the songs really sound the same; The Glass Prison is straight up metal, Misunderstood is a sort of ethereal song that builds, Disappear is nothing short of incredibly depressing, The Great Debate is an intense political writing, the list goes on. The second disc is fantastic as well, having the SDOIT title track, which is a 40+ minute song that never really gets boring. While I'd definitely say I prefer disc 1 to disc 2, they are both fantastic overall.

Favorite songs: Misunderstood, The Great Debate, Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, Blind Faith

22. Third Eye Blind - A Collection

This isn't a straight up album, but a.. well, erm, a collection of 3EB's best songs from throughout their career (when it was released.) This makes it a very strong release in my opinion, having many songs that are incredibly catchy and entertaining. I'm not the type who normally listens to this kind of music, but I absolutely love the energy, the happiness, and the emotion you can hear in almost all of the songs-- not to mention the humorous lyrics at times. 3EB has a catchy, unique feel to their pop-rock sound, and I love it. And, seriously, who hasn't heard Jumper or Semi-Charmed Life? This album is full of 90's nostalgia for me.

Favorite songs: Jumper, Semi-Charmed Life, Motorcycle Drive By, My Time in Exile

21. Thrice - Major/Minor

Hopefully I won't get stones thrown at me for another 2011 album, but Major/Minor in my opinion is Thrice's second strongest release overall. Fairly different from all of Thrice's material save for Beggars, we get a heavily grunge/alternative rock influenced album, chock full of songs that are emotional, powerful, and unique. While there isn't much heaviness, a certain air of emotion lingers in the album and makes it fairly emotionally heavy. Words in the Water is the absolute pinnacle of the album, perhaps even being my favorite song ever written. Other songs, like Anthology, Disarmed, Yellow Belly, Call It in the Air, etc., all showcase Thrice's creativity and genius. Overall, a really really good album, and one of Thrice's best releases.

Favorite songs: Words in the Water, Disarmed, Anthology, Call It in the Air

Major/Minor was a step up from Beggars IMO, though I still like the latter. 6DOIT is a top3 DT album for me (if that says anything), and I haven't heard of the other album, though it's possible that I would recognize a song or two if I listened to it.

20. Seventh Wonder - The Great Escape

The Great Escape is probably one of my favorite releases ever in the "progressive metal" scene. Seventh Wonder are a band who make music in the style of Dream Theater, Kamelot, bands like that, and they're fantastic. Their vocalist, Tommy Karevik, is definitely one of the premiere vocalists on the prog metal scene, and his range truly shows that. The Great Escape doesn't have a ton of songs, being that there is a 30 minute title track on the album-- but let me just say that it's one of the greatest 30 minute songs I've ever heard. It tells the story of a failed space mission, and the backstory is quite interesting. The song never grows dull or boring, and the entire time the music captivates the listener, telling them the fate of the journey. While the journey doesn't have a good ending, this album certainly does.

Favorite songs: The Great Escape, Wiseman, Long Way Home, King of Whitewater

19. Opeth - Still Life

Here in my opinion is the best Opeth album, Still Life. The entire album tells a story, as it is a concept album, and it flows wonderfully. The only album that I really listen to by them in full, honestly, and part of that is due to the flow and progression of the album. It magically portrays a somewhat dark story, and the music sets the atmosphere for that very well. The entire album is a standout in the progressive genre, as it shows Opeth taking their older sound, growing, and perfecting a progressive death metal sound overall. A fantastic release.

Favorite songs: All of them

18. Trivium - Shogun

While the other Trivium albums wouldn't get that close to my top 50, Shogun is something completely different. It's one of the metal albums that while being fairly straight up thrash/heavy metal/metalcore, there's progressive tendencies in the songs, the structures, the time signature changes, and everything. It's an incredible step up from their previous album, The Crusade, and it shows the taking the heavy metal formula to a new level. The title track is one of my favorite metal tracks of all time, and the album in general is just a standout release. While In Waves was a bit of a letdown, Shogun is truly a wonder.

Favorite songs: Shogun, Kirisute Gomen, Into the Mouth of Hell We March, Insurrection

17. Coheed and Cambria - In Keeping Secrets of the Silent Earth: 3

And here's my favorite Coheed and Cambria album, In Keeping Secrets! While some die-hard fans prefer SSTB, and others prefer the proggy-ness of GAI, I myself enjoy the combination of those two, this album right here. With excellent songwriting, this album showcases the band as they were finding their sound a bit more, and it truly shows the creativity of the band and how well the members at the time worked together. Every song is incredibly catchy, from my personal favorite Three Evils, to the poppy Blood Red Summer, to the fantastic The Light and the Glass-- everything is just fantastic. I hope Coheed takes the return of their former member to heart and creates an album like this, as it's definitely the best thing they've produced.

Favorite songs: Three Evils (Embodied In Love and Shadow), Blood Red Summer, The Crowing, The Light and the Glass, In Keeping Secrets of the Silent Earth 3

16. Porcupine Tree - Fear of a Blank Planet

This album is magical. From the first seconds of the album, you are thrust into an atmosphere of darkness, of uncertainty, and of a certain melancholy that's hard to describe. Fear of a Blank Planet, in my opinion, is PT's best album, containing the perfect length, song amount, and mood. Even the album art fits the album perfectly. The album is so cohesive and well put together that it is just astounding how well all the songs work together, and how they almost even tell a story. Steven might not have gotten incredibly metaphorical for the lyrics, but they work because of the music that's alongside them. Sentimental is definitely my favorite, being incredibly sad and downcast, yet still carrying the message well. Overall, this album is a masterpiece, and is essential for prog fans. Take it from me; a guy who initially wasn't a huge fan of this band... this album is the game changer.

Favorite songs: All of them

15. Fair to Midland - Arrows & Anchors

I'd consider this to be FTM's second true release, although it's actually their fourth; however, it's a logical progression for the band and some of the greatest music I've heard. FTM has a sound unlike most other bands, and a vocalist that's about as unique as they get. Darroh Sudderth, the vocalist, also pens most of the lyrics, which are oftentimes based around cliches and metaphors that are commonly used in the English language. Some might find this approach skeptical, but I personally think it adds something to the bands' music, and as such I adore the lyrics. While this album doesn't quite reach the heights of its' predecessor, it comes about as close as it can get. It does improve upon some aspects of Fables, too; such as the balance between heavy and light, and the songwriting, at times. A good example of this would be The Greener Grass, which is definitely one of the bands' best songs. The album is truly a fantastic one, and helped solidify FTM as one of my top 3 bands of all time- a definite feat for a band with just a few albums!

Favorite songs: Short-haired Tornado, The Greener Grass, Rikki Tikki Tavi, Golden Parachutes, Musical Chairs

Haven't really been able to get into Coheed (though I can't really say that I've put in a monster effort either), but Fear of a Blank Planet is tied with Signify for my favorite Porcupine Tree album, and Arrows and Anchors is really fantastic as well.
Nice picks! Can't wait for the rest.  :tup

Don't feel bad about not being able to get into C&C, Zantera.  I won't repost my thoughts on them here, but they are in Nick's list because Nick and I talk shit on each other all the time I was pretty honest about them there.

I like In Absentia and Deadwing more than FOABP, but saying that its your favorite PT album means that no PT will be in the top 15, and that in and of itself is awesome.

FTM is very good, but it wouldn't be in my top 50.

14. Between the Buried and Me - The Great Misdirect

This album was the follow-up to BTBAM's masterpiece, a grandeur album known as Colors.  Both albums accentuate everything a progressive death metal album should, with beautiful melodies and angelic falsetto lines combined with gut-crushing riffs, solos, and vocals. This album is different than Colors in that it isn't basically one flowing song, it's a collection, and the collection is fantastic! Lots of people dislike this album because there is a certain amount of guitar wankery, but I enjoy it immensely. The band took me some time to get used to back a few years ago, but once they clicked, I loved them more than almost any other band I listen to. Definitely one of my top artists of all time, with another more obvious album to come.

Favorite songs: Fossil Genera- A Feed From Cloud Mountain, Obfuscation, Swim to the Moon, Desert of Song

13. Mastodon - The Hunter

The highest album from 2011 to shoot up my lists is Mastodon's The Hunter, one of my favorite metal albums of the past decade. It took everything I loved about Crack the Skye and Leviathan and combined it, also flavoring it a bit with a more "fun." The sound might be a tad more accessible, but the vocals were my least favorite part of Mastodon at first, and now I love them. The Hunter sees Mastodon combine melody with metal, and it's an amazing amalgamation.

Favorite songs: Stargasm, Blasteroid, All the Heavy Lifting, Creature Lives, Octopus Has No Friends

12. Thrice - Vheissu

Thrice's Vheissu is my favorite Thrice album, and, in a few years, I can see it becoming a top 10 album, rather than just a bit off. I love everything about the album; Thrice decided they'd experiment a bit more with their sound rather than continue the sound of The Artist in the Ambulance, and it truly paid off. Everything about this album is insane, from the powerful melodies, to the crushing harsh vocals, and the fantastic songwriting. Thrice truly struck the right chords with this album, and I am incredibly sad they're taking a hiatus, as everything they released from this album onward was basically 5/5 to me.

Favorite songs: Red Sky, The Earth Will Shake, Of Dust and Nations, Image of the Invisible

11. Haste the Day - Attack of the Wolf King

This album is a strange one for me, as I don't love most of HtD's previous work, only finding it to be good or great rather than how I consider this album-- a masterpiece. Another metalcore album, each song is melodic, brutal, powerful, and catchy. After hearing that this would be the band's last album, I was very sad, but at least they went out strong, producing an amazing work of art. "Dogs Like Vultures" is the highlight of the album, while songs like "My Name is Darkness," "Walk With a Crooked Spine," and "Merit for Sadness" all make the album a standout piece in the metalcore jungle.

Favorite songs: Dogs Like Vultures, Walk With a Crooked Spine, Merit for Sadness, My Name is Darkness

Top ten will proceed! I will post one album at a time, and the write-ups should be a tad longer, as these are my top albums of all time!

Can you post a no write up list of all the previous albums please?

I seem to like TGM more than most people, but its not in Colors league.

I don't get the hype about that Thrice album.  It's the only one I have, and it's always in one ear and out the other...it just never grabs my attention.

You should definitely try out Major/Minor and the Alchemy Index, perhaps even The Artist in the Ambulance; Thrice's other bests, imo. Once they clicked for me, I loved them.

TGM isn't as good as Colors, no, but it's awesome, and while I don't know if they'll ever make anything as good as Colors again, they've still been releasing fantastic stuff.

And this list so far...

10. Brand New - The Devil and God Are Raging Inside of Me

This is the most emotional album I've ever heard, and it connects with me on so many levels. While I'd first heard a few songs from this album a year or two ago and paid no mind to them, I eventually found myself listening to the full album some time later, and it's been one of my favorites ever since. The album is a definite stray from the path that Deja Entendu had laid, being more acoustic and vocal driven, and also surrounding a very dark subject matter, ranging from isolation, self-pity, death, struggles with faith, the list goes on. Jesse Lacey, the lyricist, absolutely wrote the album from his heart, and each word, each lyric just creates an atmosphere of pain and the questioning that goes along with it. The album sounds as if Lacey is abandoning all hope, and it's obvious he doesn't have a lot of confidence in himself or his faith in songs like "Degausser," "Jesus," and "You Won't Know."

While two of the songs are relatively faster and upbeat, those being "Not the Sun" and "The Archers Bows Have Broken," the lyrics in the songs still occasionally portray the darkness of the album. Every song just slides into the next, and there's never a dull moment in between. The songs are engaging, and, when listening to this album during a period of your life which you've been hurt, abandoned, or just lost hope in the world around you truly puts things into perspective and makes you realize that you're not the only one. This is a truly an album of sin, of broken hearts, and lost places. While there are occasional glitters of hope, in songs like "Jesus," ultimately the album serves to stand as an album that will make you feel something; what that something is depends on the listener- but, for me, it helps me cope with hard times, and it's an album that is pretty much perfect in every regard.

Favorite songs: Jesus, The Archers Bows Have Broken, Not the Sun, Sowing Season, You Won't Know

I both like and don't get the hype for Brand New. Given I only know The Devil and God... but it's a pretty great album. One of the better Alternative Rock-albums I've heard, but few of the tracks really blow me away. Sowing Season and Welcome to Bangkok are my favorites, the rest ranges from Good to Great. The album has a massive hype though, maybe there's something lyrically I'm missing, it's hard to say. A lot of the lyrics are about god from what I've noticed, but I have no idea if the band is for or against the idea of a god, I don't really know where they stand so to speak. :P

Still, great pick, but just wanted to share my thoughts.

9. Anathema - We're Here Because We're Here

This. Album. Is. Gorgeous.

So we all know Anathema, in the past, was a doom metal band. They had an intense, heavy sound that most bands of that era didn't exactly have. And then, suddenly, they moved past that and started making more alternative and progressive rocks songs, some completely full of darkness and pain, and others full of optimism and happiness. Then, this album came along. This is the album where they absolutely perfected their sound and made one of what I consider the greatest albums ever. Full of absolutely beautiful songs from cover to cover, this album truly showcases music as an art form.

Nothing on this album is really "heavy," per say; there is a definite darker song in Summernight Horizon, which builds to a beautiful climax, and then the colder sounds of Get Off Get Out as well... but overall, this album is a dive into the positive, showcasing a period of time in which the band was truly happy, and got the full enjoyment out of making music. From the beautiful tones of Dreaming Light to the intense messages in Angels Walk Among Us, every single song on this album carries emotion, and an atmosphere that is hard to replicate. This album definitely seated Anathema as one of my favorite bands, and while I feel as though their previous albums are really great, this one truly sits at the top of the Anathema discography (with the newly released Weather Systems right there with it.) I truly hope Anathema continue to make such fantastic music, and that they don't ever lose the enjoyment in doing it.

Favorite songs: Dreaming Light, Summernight Horizon, Angels Walk Among Us, Thin Air, Everything

8. Avenged Sevenfold - Waking the Fallen

Ah, here we are, A7X's 2nd studio album. An album which effortlessly mixes metalcore screaming with clean, powerful vocals. This album was the last to feature prominent screams from M. Shadows, until Nightmare, which reintroduced that in a few locations. While it isn't A7X's best album, it is still one of my favorite albums of all time and one of A7X's last albums I came to love as a whole. Waking the Fallen showcases A7X's progressive nature in a few songs, while also showing their skill at writing insanely brutal material, along with more emotional songs as well. I Won't See You Tonight pt. 1 is one of the band's best songs and I urge you to check it out-- an absolutely wonderful piece. The array of instruments on the album help to diversify songs, and once again, the vocals are just incredible. Definitely the best they've had on any album.

Another thing that makes this album so awesome in my opinion is the flow. From the introduction song to the last, crazy notes of And All Things Will End, this album has an atmosphere of complete darkness. Chapter Four is an excellent example of this, telling a story, yet carrying a foreboding atmosphere the entire time. Overall, an amazing album, but yes, A7X will place one more time...

Favorite songs: I Won't See You Tonight, pt. 1, Chapter Four, Remenissions, Second Heartbeat, Eternal Rest

7. August Burns Red - Constellations

This album has one of my favorite songs of all time on it, Marianas Trench; a song that starts off with an atmospheric guitar riff that builds into a crushing monument of sound that channels feelings of misery, anger, and despair. Overall, the album is a constant back-and-forth between hopefulness and regret, with songs like Crusades looking towards the good in things despite all the bad, and songs like Meridian, that have an atmosphere of darkness, yet are paired with lyrics that look forward.

Overall, the album is in my opinion the best release in the "metalcore" genre. It takes everything about metalcore and accentuates it to the best possible degree, and that's what gives it a place in my top albums.

Favorite songs: Marianas Trench, Crusades, Meridian, Indonesia

6. Mumford & Sons - Sigh No More

'Love, it will not betray you, dismay or enslave you: it will set you free.'

Mumford & Sons are a folk band that rose to popularity in 2009/2010, and since then, they've been one of the most different kind of bands to hit music in a long time. Their album sits at the top of the iTunes charts constantly, and people are in love with them for the same reasons I am; that is, the beautiful lyrics, fantastic melodies, and the simplicity and artistic feeling that their songs portray. Their song "Timshel" is perhaps the most beautiful song ever written, and it gives me chills every time I hear it. It's just a wonderful album full of meaningful songs, blazing banjos, maniacal mandolins, and angelic acoustic. Excuse my alliterations-- this album is amazing. The album is very consistent, and there's not a ton of deviations from their style, but the songs are played excellently and the lyrics combined with the wonderful vocals are just fantastic. There's a sort of "down to earth" style to their music and I love it. Definitely one of my favorite albums, ever.

Favorite songs: Timshel, Winter Winds, Awake My Soul, Roll Away Your Stone, The Cave, Little Lion Man

5. Alter Bridge - One Day Remains

While most consider Alter Bridge's pinnacle release to be their second album, Blackbird, One Day Remains does something for me neither of their albums have done since; and that's evoke an incredibly strong feeling of emotion. Songs on ODR, like Broken Wings, Shed My Skin, Open Your Eyes, and Down to My Last all are windows into the "how things can be dark and seem to have no end, but there's always a light at the end of the tunnel" kind of mindset, and for a time, it fit my life perfectly. The songs were all written by Mark Tremonti, and paired with Myles' fantastic voice, it shows how much chemistry they found as a band.

The album is a definite masterpiece, and, while the band have yet to beat it in my opinion, all of their releases have been fantastic, and I hope they'll continue to be as amazing in the future.

Favorite songs: Broken Wings, Open Your Eyes, Shed My Skin

4. Dream Theater - Images and Words

This is an album that every Dream Theater fan can attest for being a very good album. Some don't like it, or some don't like the 90's sound a lot of the songs have, but it's at least respected by the community as a great sophomore album, and a fantastic debut for LaBrie.

Overall, the album is full of songs that I can say are powerful. Lots of the songs are upbeat and energizing, and you can tell the band had fun making the album. A song like "Take the Time" showcases this perfectly, as it's a long, progressive song that rocks and rolls and grooves as well as slows down for room to breathe; that's what makes it one of my favorite Dream Theater songs.

Then of course, there's the classic Learning to Live, an early epic with fantastic lyrics and a great flow to the song, as well as the wonderful reprisal of the Wait for Sleep melody. Songs like Surrounded and Another Day are both ballad-esque, but still are incredibly progressive and make use of fantastic melodies, riffs, and of course, the awesome vocals. Images and Words is definitely the best DT album, and one of the best of all time.

Favorite songs: Take the Time, Surrounded, Learning to Live, Pull Me Under

3. Fair to Midland - Fables From a Mayfly: What I Tell You Three Times is True

This album is one of those albums where upon first listen, you realize you've stumbled upon something golden. From the first time I listened to Fables, I was incredibly intrigued and continued listening-- until it became one of my favorite albums of all time. An absolute masterpiece.

What really got me about this album was the vocalist; Darroh Sudderth. What an eccentric man with an incredibly powerful set of pipes, seriously. This guy can be roaring at one moment and then hitting incredibly high notes the next. Paired with his excellent cliches and poetry, it makes the songs unique and different from most of the alternative/progressive metal scene. A song like The Wife, the Kids, and the White Picket Fence is the best example of Darroh's range, while Dance of the Manatee is excellent for showing his growls, which are used basically only in that song.

In conclusion, Fables from a Mayfly is definitely a classic album. With one of the best vocalists on the scene, Fair to Midland continues to dominate, and this and Arrows and Anchors really made the band one of my favorite bands of all time. I have a sneaking suspicion this album might become my favorite or 2nd favorite of all time in years to come, only time will tell!

2. Between the Buried and Me - Colors

It's funny, I remember in 2008 when a friend linked me to "Prequel to the Sequel" after I had shown some of my current music interests and I laughed at the vocals. Close-minded was I, and I shunned the band and its work for a year or more.

However, one day I decided to return to the band's music, after having introduced myself to many metalcore and hardcore acts, and, finally, something clicked. The lush, soft vocals mixed with the brutal raging screams resonated within me, and I listened, and listened, and listened.

Colors became one of those albums I can sit and listen to without a moment of boredom. I can imitate every little section, and whistle and hum to every guitar lick that comes along. The flow is just fantastic, and sometimes you feel like you're just listening to one song, and a fantastic one at that. Moments like the redneck section of Ants of the Sky and the crazy vocal harmonies on Sun of Nothing are what make the album so different from the progressive death metal/metalcore scene. Every moment of off-beat antics is placed perfectly, and helps the album from falling flat. The album is a masterpiece, in literally every sense of the word.

Colors.  :heart It's funny because it took me about 8 spins perhaps before the album started to grow on me, sadly I thought the vocals were laughable the first time I heard them. :/ They really needed time for me, and now I think Tommy is easily one of the best vocalists in metal today. Your update also comes very convenient since I just found out yesterday that BTBAM are coming here in October.  At first I was freaking out a bit because tickets are released this Friday, and I'm a bit short on cash right now, but today I found out that a site where I had made a music-order couldn't get me the items I had ordered (A limited box by Anathema for example) so I was able to get back the money I had already spent, so now it looks like I will have cash for the tickets. When one window closes, another one surely opens! (Yeah I could most likely get tickets next month without being in risk for the tickets selling out, but I really don't feel at ease before I have them)

Fair to Midland is a great band, I need to listen to that album more times though, but Dance of the Manatee is badass. DT is a band I feel sorta so/so about nowadays. I don't really consider I&W to be one of their best, but it's not bad.

.....aaaaaaaaand here's #1. You'll have to read the entire write-up to understand why it is my #1 and why other albums I've discovered since haven't passed it.

1. Avenged Sevenfold - City of Evil

And here we are. My entire life, I've always been into music. I've sung in competitions and related activites since I was very very young. However, I never really actually got into the music scene until around 2008.
My sister's boyfriend was into metal pretty hardcore at the time, and she would constantly play "Lost,"  a song from Avenged Sevenfold's self-titled album over and over, and, as I had just gotten a new iPod, and was collecting music that I found I enjoyed, I immediately asked to get some songs and albums from this band, never having heard of them really before.

Luckily, one of the albums I recieved was Avenged Sevenfold's third release, City of Evil, an album that had seen them transition themselves from a metalcore act to a hard rock/heavy metal act, one that was almost progressive at times. Of course, I didn't really know this then, as I was just getting into the rock and metal scene, but after listening to this album, my entire perspective on music was altered completely. Previously, I had been into lots of classic rock and pop, stuff my parents listened to. I didn't actively search the internet for new music. I didn't go out to record stores and buy new releases. I was a casual listener, someone who didn't really have that much interest in music other than here and now, and in the car. City of Evil changed this.

The album threw me off balance. The pounding riffs, the insane solos, the amazing vocals, and the overall impact of all of the songs made me look at music in a new light. I couldn't exactly put my finger on why I loved the album so much, but in light of my enjoyment, I played it, over and over, until I knew every song and every nuance within them.

Beginning with Beast and the Harlot, City of Evil takes you for a powerful ride, from the soloing and incredibly catchy chorus of Beast and the Harlot, to the thundering Burn it Down, followed by the critical and message-laden Blinded in Chains. Then, Bat Country, arguably one of the band's most popular songs comes along, followed then by Trashed and Scattered, another metal-heavy song. The album then takes a different route, one for the better, and one that I always was wowed at. While the first half of the album is strictly heavy metal, once Seize the Day hits, a dozen styles are showcased. Seize the Day perfectly showcases what a ballad should be, with duel solos, insane vocals (and layered vocals near the end that are just fantastic,) and an overall theme that we can all relate to. Then, Sidewinder comes along. Sidewinder, all in all, is my favorite song ever written by the band. I feel as if it perfectly showcases everything the band is in one song. The song is an up and down ride the whole time, starting with a airy breeze and bursting into heavy riffage that carries the song with powerful vocals, crushing choruses, and a bridge that is absolutely glorious. The song then breaks into an acoustic section, with two more verses that are wonderfully executed, and then followed by an amazing acoustic guitar solo, which makes the song. Strength of the World, a very prog metal influenced song, is up next, and is one of the most emotional songs I've heard. The song tells a story, and the story is backed by excellent instrumentation, vocals, and emotion. The Wicked End, the next song, is another progressive-like song, with gregorian choirs and several biblical references. Betrayed is a song dedicated to Dimebag, and is justly so. While perhaps not one of my favorites of the album, it's still a catchy piece, and a good one at that. The album ends, however, on a perfect note, with M.I.A., another progressive influenced song, with a militarial message and a strong one at that. The vocals, the solos, everything in this song just works, and it ends the album on a very, very strong note.

After City of Evil, I began to listen to many, many more albums. I slowly transitioned my way from hard rock to metal to progressive metal, and then from there I branched out into many, many genres-- many of which you've seen here on this list previously.

While I cannot deny that Avenged Sevenfold is not the most innovative band to ever exist, nor are they likely to appear on many top lists here, the band, and City of Evil, introduced me to music, to the constant desire to find new albums, to the love of instrumentation that is executed well, to everything music has to offer. The opinions of others, the people out there who constantly insult and attack the band for changing their image (or for their original image at all)-- those things don't change my view of the band and their work. The album changed my life, my perspective, and, as an artist, it showed me that art isn't just drawings and paintings. It's expression, and music fits that bill perfectly. City of Evil is my top album of all time, and I don't know if that will ever change; it surely might.  But I do know it means the world to me.

Great list - and good choice and write up for #1  :tup It's the definitive Avenged Sevenfold album and like you I think it will always be among my top albums (although not my #1). Lots of other great choices on there as well, especially Images And Words in the top 5.

I wondered how well it would be recieved when you switched from all the post rock, indie and prog in the beginning of the list and had a bunch of Avenged Sevenfold and stuff in the top few.

City of Evil was one of a few gateway albums for me, one that got me into a lot of other bands and albums, so I can totally understand why you'd rate it so high.

Thanks for all the positive responses everyone. Once again, sorry it took so long.

@The King in Crimson: that's awesome, glad to see there's someone else who looks at CoE in a similar way that I do. It really did propel me into many other genres, and for that, I'll always love it.

@WindMaster: I'm really hoping they'll release their new album this year, I cannot wait for new music by them.

@DTVT: Thanks, I appreciate it!

@ariich: I loved your top 50, and I'm glad you liked mine! We have a fairly similar taste, I'd say.

@Ryzee: Definitely check them out, they're a metal band with a ton of different influences. Nothing groundbreaking or anything, but just a lot of fun and good music, City of Evil and Waking the Fallen in particular.

@RuRo: Hey man, glad to see you finally posting in here! :P Haha, I knew you'd enjoy the top 10 a bit more than the rest of the list, but hey, there was Seventh Wonder and Alter Bridge and probably a few others you like before. I bet you never though I'd get into Porcupine Tree, huh?

@Zantera: Thanks again for all the positive response, you're definitely among the coolest people ever o/

@Elite: Thanks a ton, man! Your list is looking great thus far, too, and I'm glad you enjoyed the write ups. Some of them were very thoughtful, and some.. well, some were rushed, haha.

@Mladen: Definitely, and thanks!

That's unfortunate, I love Fables a bit more than I do Arrows & Anchors, but I can see why people would prefer the latter. Haste the Day are really good, though their last album is definitely their magnum opus in my opinion. Very solid metalcore. Haken is fantastic yes, and based on those albums you quoted, I'd say you'd be hard pressed to dislike them. Listen to Visions ASAP!

And WindMaster you and WebRaider seriously need to get avatars, the W names throw me off now and then. :lol Looking forward to your top 50 in a year.
