Title: Beyond The Bridge - "The Old Man and The Spirit"
Post by: kirksnosehair on January 26, 2012, 12:27:31 PM
Got this from a friend today on Facebook.  Listened to a couple of tracks and immediately went and bought the MP3 album from Amazon.com

They have their album streaming HERE (https://www.guitarworld.com/exclusive-beyond-bridge-streaming-new-album-old-man-and-spirit)

If you like what you hear, it's available in CD or Digital on Amazon.com (https://www.amazon.com/Old-Man-Spirit-Beyond-Bridge/dp/B0065HDLN0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1327605886&sr=8-1)

Or get it from my good friend Ken Golden at LaserCD (https://www.lasercd.com/Products/Beyond-The-Bridge---The-Old-Man-And-The-Spirit__FRCD541.aspx)

There's a pretty good write-up there on the LaserCD site.  I've found that I generally have about the same taste as he does.

This one is killer.  I'm almost all the way through it now and I've got to put it away so I don't over play it.

Listened to the opening track, love the vocals and how well the music blends. Think I'm gonna have to buy this someday.

Listened to the first track and is going through the second one.

Surely interesting... sounds very professional and well put together for a first album. Very promising so far.

Remind me to listen to your recommendations then :D

Yeah, pretty much any disc that he says he likes on his site, I buy it, and I love them 95% of the time.

Bumping this thread because I cannot stop listening to this CD.  In fact, it has a song on it that is the first song to move me to tears in a long time.

It's just a great piece of writing, the whole thing.  And the performances are outstanding.

Yeah, very nice album indeed! I've been listening to it once so far (streamed from some official site) but it definitely is on top of my must-buy-list at the moment.

I came here to bump this thread and two people already beat me to it.  Fantastic album, I keep finding new things to like about it.  I've only listened to it 3 times so far, but I think its safe to say this would have easily made my top 5 from last year had I heard it before, probably #3 behind Flaming Row and TDH.

As I posted in another thread, simply having a thread about a band generally does nothing.  I only popped in originally because Barry started the thread.  If this thread were started by 95% of the people here, I wouldn't have popped in until I heard a song from this on WPAPU.  So, I'm equally guilty of this as others.  Another part of it is that it seems like a growing population of DTF isn't interested in prog or prog metal.

It seems like the best way to pimp a band around here is through roulettes.

Yeah, happened to find this one on my own as well when visiting progstreaming.com recently.  Every DT fan here definitely must give it a listen as it's freaking amazing.  One of those albums that absolutely floors you instantly and only gets better upon repeated listens.  I have a feeling this and the forthcoming album from Headspace will rank very highly on my 2012 top 10 list.

Just curious, was it World of Wonder that moved you, cause that one sucker punched my soul real good.

And one thing I was thinking, if these guys do an opening tour and play this thing in its enterity, I feel woefully sorry for the headlining act.

I checked out The Apparition on youtube (ZOMG, I checked it out for free! Burn me at the stake!! :P) earlier today.  Not bad.  A decade ago, I might have eaten that up with a spoon, but now, not so much.  They are obviously a talented band, and from the sound of that one song, they do a good job within that style, but that kind of overly dramatic prog metal just isn't my thing.  Oh well, I tried.

I'd hate to be the party pooper here, but I've listened through this album a couple of times and while it's good, there's nothing that really excites as yet.  It's solid, but I think needs a lot of listens to fully absorb.

The vocals make the album for me. Along with the music, the vocals really bring the songs to a new level, especially since the vocals are female. She really adds a whole lot to them, hearing her makes me want to find more female vocalist bands in this style. Or better yet, we need more female singers singing this style. Which in turn is funny, because she sounds like some pop singers in some songs, I've always said I would enjoy the pop singers more if they sang a different style or sang about different topics other than heartbreaking love songs, and sex songs.

Thanks for showing us this band, Its a contender for album of the year.

It's funny you say that, when I was writing the review and dumping all that praise on the album, all I could think about was the Simpson's episode where Homer was a food critic, and loved everything. :lol

Food critics have it nice though, eat for free at the best places, and all they have to do is write about them, rough fucking life.

Good thing I don't have the time or patience to write album reviews because I'd just end up with a bunch of perks I could never use anyway  :lol

Haven't gotten around to reading your review yet, though it seems kind of silly to read a positive review of something I already like :)

Also, some less than glowing reviews are necessary to maintain credibility - and yes the Homer episode does come to mind.  "Nine thumbs up?  What the HELL is that?"

My favorite comment from that one is "pedestrian" :lol

Yeah, I hear what you're saying. One thing is I hate to slam someone publicly, it's just not in my nature, and two, both the albums I reviewed so far, this and the Mechanical Poet album, I do love that much.  She just sent me a few others that I might be able to be a bit more critical on, but I'm so lacking in the music theory side, I'm always searching for the terms to describe what I know I'm hearing, it's a lot of learning but fun as hell, definately a hobby I want to keep up on.

The male vocal is the more dominant on the album, and are incredible.  The thing is the two fit together so perfectly with the music and especially with the story.

I was so bitter that I couldn't be there for the gig that when I got home from work I bought Peter Gabriel tickets in a fit of rage. I felt much better afterwards. :P

Well, let's see...

I met Nem.
I sweated.
I had fun.
Flaming Row ruled.
Beyond The Bridge were very good (despite some technical problems in the beginning). Funny encore (Can You Feel the Love Tonight?).

More later.  ;)

Sorry, I didn't introduce myself. Next time. :)
A very hot day in Germany. The gig was in the basement of a club right in the middle of Frankfurt, no air conditioning. One thing that was very obvious was the fun everyone had. And that immediately adds up to the atmosphere.
I'm a bit biased as I've seen Flaming Row 3 times already and love the album as well as their live performance. For me, it was hard to top their performance. 10 people on a small stage - that was quite a challenge (okay, BTB also had 7 band members on stage...). Recommendation: play in Rüsselsheim (Das Rind) next time. Everything is more relaxed there  and the sound is better.

BTB had a difficult start due to some technical problems, so that they played the first song twice. Silly talking during the break.
Fine musicians. I always love a strong singer - and BTB has one!
The female singer, I prefer on CD. Live, she had this vibrato thing going on at nearly every ending line which kinda bothered me. And man, she could use some more pounds on her ribs...
Loved Christopher's playing!

Flaming Row - what can I say? To me, they are probably the best German live band at the moment. "Best", because they manage to deliver the complexity of their album in a very special way. Great musicians, but also with a funny vibe and great chemistry. You clearly see that they love what they are doing. 10 people, most of them delivering vocals - that's very entertaining to watch! Over only a few gigs, they managed to turn from silly to professional. Too bad they probably won't play abroad with this big line up. Flaming Row would definitely entertaining every prog audience!

Don't ask me about set lists. Don't remember that stuff.  ;) FR played for about 1 hour, BTB for 1:10, I think.

Nem? What can I say? Very nice, enthusiastic girl! Only talked to her for a bit. She now loves Kiri from Flaming Row (which is not very hard, I might add) and seemed to enjoy German Hefeweizen as well.  ;)
There'll be pics to prove our meeting. Looking forward to what she's gonna say about the gig.
I'm a long-time concert goer and I had a great time. Flaming Row could make it much bigger, wouldn't there be so many band members, I fear. BTB also delivered, though I preferred the complexity of the Flaming Row stuff.

Questions?  ;)

I don't say this often, but, fuck America*.

*By America I of course mean the poor musical tastes of the average American which makes it financially unfeasible for awesome bands to come to or properly tour America.

I bought this album yesterday after seeing all the praise here. I've listened to it twice already and it was even better the second time. I really love the mix of male and female vocals. Favorite songs right now are The Struggle and World of Wonders. This album is easily in my top 10 of the year. I know it took years to make but I hope this isn't their only album. I can't wait to see what else they're capable of. :metal

Awesome album. I think prog wise I like Headspace just a touch more this year (Daddy Fucking Loves You carries it to the win) but that doesn't make this album any less awesome. Definite top 10 material for me, I love the occasional Savatage vibe they get into here without overly aping Savatage. I see this getting a lot of listens.

And wow, Where The Earth And Sky Meet is glorious.

OK... Just listened to this album for the first time.

This is a great album. The music is fantastic. I heard it in my car, but I can only imagine how it would sound some quiet night with a couple of beers.
I definitely felt that the first half was much stronger, but all in all, a great first listen.

Does anyone know what happened?

This is what I'm wondering as well.  There seems to be a taboo about discussing how someone died unless it was from a previously known condition.  I know two of my college classmates died, but was never able to find out what happened to them, which always leads me to point suicide because if was a car accident or something similar, it tends to get posted in the news.

It's been a while since we posted something here, and we hope you understand that this sudden tragedy left us in silence. We thank you so much for all your thoughts and condolences in the past days - it really means a lot to us! Thank you all.

We will be completely honest with you.
As you might imagine, this loss let us rethink a lot, and of course we were asking ourselves if there was going to be a "Beyond the Bridge" without Simon in the future. Besides losing a very good friend that he has been for many years to all of us, we also lost an incredible musician and our trustful advisor - he was at the core of our band.
Simon truly lived for the music. His abilities as a sound engineer and producer were simply outstanding. And he was such a very good young man.
Simon put so much time, energy, and all his enthusiasm and abilities into "Beyond the Bridge". He enjoyed so much talking about the future of this band, he organized so many great things, he spent hours on the phone with us and probably days on the road.
It was not an easy decision for us. For all of you who might be wondering about what lies ahead, here is an answer: We will need some time to organize ourselves, but we will continue with "Beyond the Bridge". And if it's only to remember Simon, there will be a second album. A grand album. We will try to make it the best CD you could possibly imagine. Because that's all he deserves.
Thank you again for all your support.
We are happy to have such great fans.

I find it really wonderful and brave they have decided to carry on. And I found it appropriate to include a DT quote in my comment on that status update.

I just don't think it's suicide. It just doesn't seem like that. Or perhaps I just don't want to believe it.

When it's an accident or medical, people usually are very forthcoming with that information.  If it was an accident or foul play, that would be reported in the media.  If someone dies in a car accident, it usually makes the local news, and if it doesn't people are usually open about it so people don't suspect the unsavory deaths.  Same for murder victims, although the media usually covers that.  The only other ones that families tend to keep under wraps is drug overdose or autoerotic asphyxiation, which I guess I hadn't considered and probably should have before assuming suicide.

Maybe its because I'm curious like a cat, but I always want to know what happened to people.  Two people I went to college with died and I never was able to track down answers and it's always bugged me.

So, listening to "Where The Earth And Sky Meet" on the WPAPU podcast has convinced me to buy this album as soon as possible.

Great song and definitely a worthy purchase.  :tup

This was definitely the biggest surprise from last year and a very strong debut album.

That really is a beautiful song, from a beautiful album and a beautiful group of musicians. I can't wait to see what they come up with next.

Yup, definitely a front runner, if not the top album of mine from last year. They are in the studio I do believe working on another album.

Apparently,  my copy of their debut got lost in the mail. I emailed them back and they were so kind to send another one, due to it being their summer sale deal. I love when bands do these types of things.

That's a sensible choice. :)

The solo of that song is one of the highlight of the album, as it is the rest of the song. The two favourites of mine stay TDIH and The Call, though. :D

Really, it's hard to choose a favorite, the whole album rocks...  but if I had to, I'd go Triumph of Irreality.

2012 AOTY for me.

Definitely one of the best debut albums I have ever heard. Favorite song would probably be either "The Difference is Human" or "All a man can do".

I'm thinking about ordering Where The Earth And Sky Meet, like what i've heard so far.

I wonder if someone could check out who plays percussion on the album. There's some cool Marimba parts laying in the background on The Apparition and out of curiosity I wonder if it's programmed or a real musician playing. Sounds pretty authentic which is cool because it's not often the instrument is used in prog which is a shame because it's a instrument with alot of expression and emotion depending on who's playing of course.

Well, their drummer is Fabian Meier, so I guess that's the guy. If you can come up with a non-dickish way of asking (nothing like "Hey guys, are the drums on The Apparition fake? 'Cause it'd be awesome if not, but I really think they are!") and I get the chance to, I'll ask the guys when I see them in November.

:lol Yea that's not a great way to ask! It's not that important, it was more if it said anything in the credits on the CD. I'm probably gonna buy it anyway so it's no rush but if you wanna ask after their show feel free to do so, that would be much appreciated!  :metal

The Spring of it Alls short somber softness is great

I hope so. But, since this album has been a couple years in the making to make perfect, and one of the main members died...it's hard to tell. I don't care if they don't surpass this album, I love her vocals, plus the music.

Disclaimer: I know some of you guys thought there was some new Beyond the Bridge information when you saw this new post. There isn't. Sorry about that.

So, fans of Beyond the Bridge, seeing how they've only got one album up still (and seeing how I tried to send them in every roulette I'm in to convert more people), would anyone be interested in voting in the quick and short Beyond the Bridge survivor to determine the best song from The Old Man and the Spirit? If we get more than five people, I'll fire it away, if not, I'll just go ahead and run the full-fledged Kamelot survivor.

Regardless of how many people we get, I think it won't hurt to state once more that this album is so amazing. Progressive metal perfection and it doesn't grow old regardless of how many times I listen to it.

Thank you mike and Scorp!

Obviously though, two people is not enough to make this work, so I'll give this thread one last bump, wait a few more days before abandoning this idea and moving on to the survey regarding the upcoming Kamelot survivor.

I love the album but it's one of those albums where I can't rank songs. Each song is written to serve a purpose and create a flow.

Welcome to the party.

I've always felt at odds with Circus Maximus naming their 3rd album Nine. But now I get it. It spent Nine years as my favorite album from 2012, but this gem is significantly better.

I guess I should finally do a roulette so I can see what else I've been missing out on.

I enjoy the somber songs of Spring of It All and World of Wonders. The latter being a beautiful ballad worthy of radio play.

This is approximately my take on it. I like it, but it's not among my favorite albums.
