Title: UMH's "No Frills, No Fluff, Just Roulette"
Post by: Ultimetalhead on January 16, 2012, 07:48:24 PM
It's come to my attention that these crazy things have just been getting crazier ever since the beginning. So, for this roulette, we're going super primal. Consider this the garage rock revival of song roulette. The approach is threefold.

1. No Themes. Period. The big issue with this one was that someone would always get shafted if they didn't have a good selection of music within the underlying theme. All rounds will be open.

2. No Time Limits Basically, I don't give a flying shit how long the song is as long as it's well done. I'd hate for a song to be disqualified just because it ran over the time limit to include a section that took the song to a whole other level.

3. No Set Point Values In the first round of my original roulette, I had to give 2 songs that I adored a "2" rating, when they probably deserved at least a 4. This means shit's going to get pretty high scoring. Also, that means that I reserve the right to give a song a score of "0" if it's Coheed, Muse, Mew, or Heritage-era Opeth.

Anyway, the participants are as follows.

73109
zxlkho
Dark Castle
YtseBitsySpider
Ravenheart
ClairvoyantCat
ariich
Gorille85

And off we go. Try to get your songs in to me by Thursday at the latest. The earlier they come in, the earlier results will be posted.

Edit: Forgot my last.fm. What a tool I am. www.last.fm/user/ultihelmethead

Interesting. Everybody else figured it out, and you were even in the last one. :p I do have Spotify, but I don't use it very often and would prefer Grooveshark.

Oh, by the way. You're the last one who needs to send, so HURRY THE FUCK UP ALREADY.

Post by: Ultimetalhead on January 17, 2012, 06:21:22 PM
Alright bitches, here we go. I'll be posting the write-ups in the order I received the songs. Just because your song's at the bottom doesn't mean you got last place. Also, since we don't have a real points hierarchy, each song is getting the exact amount of points I feel it deserved. The only exception to the rule is the "winner" of each round, who will receive 6 points. The rest will be graded on a 1-5 scale.

1 - Ugh, please don't make me listen to this again
2 - Tolerable, but lacking in several areas
3 - Good stuff, with maybe 1 or 2 minor gripes
4 - Highly enjoyable
5 - *boner*
6 - *megaboner*

Gorille85 Sleepytime Gorilla Museum - Sleep is Wrong

Well, this was certainly the best start to this roulette that I could have possibly asked for. This is a band I've always wanted to check out, but I never really had the time nor the motivation (always too much other stuff to listen to). Harry and Alex both sent me a few random songs, but nothing ever really stood out. However, I have now realized what a fool I am for not paying more attention. This is some really fabulous music. I quote one of the comments on the video when I say "This is the heaviest non-heavy song you will ever hear." It achieves this monstrous, crushing sound without a single distorted guitar riff. Based on first impressions alone, this would have gotten 5 points, but all the layers that jump out after repeated listens make me quite aware that this is a band I'll be listening to for a long time. 5 points

73109 Shape of Despair - Quiet These Paintings Are

Long this song is. Doomy it is also. Yodaspeak the song title is in. Anyway, there's no denying that this song went on for way too long, but it was still entertaining and bleak. I've always been into Swallow the Sun, but I think I might actually like this better. I could see myself exploring Skyrim to this music. It fits that night vibe so perfectly. The piano blending with the oboe (I'm pretty sure. I could be wrong) is a very nice prelude to the ever-familiar doom chords. My one complaint about this song (apart from the length) is that the fade-in didn't really do it for me. I think this song would have benefited from one enormous impact to bring in the heavy parts. I'm actually surprised that you like this, what with the awesome growls and all, but I'm not complaining. Looks like you finally got into good music.  :) 4 points

Dark Castle Desecravity - Enthralled in Decimation

:metal :metal :metal :metal :metal :metal :metal This is some excellent modern death metal. Erik Rutan seems to have a gift when it comes to producing the absolute best-sounding death metal ever. Everything (except the bass, of course) cuts through so cleanly, that it gives a certain finesse and beauty to a genre that prides itself on being ugly as all hell. I get a big Cannibal Corpse vibe, but dare I say that these guys might be even better. The riffs never stick around long enough to become static, and the technical prowess of this band absolutely speaks for itself. I especially love when the higher vocals compliment the low stuff like Deicide like to play around with. Really, my only complaint with this song is that it lacks any really memorable sections, but it's still fun as hell to listen to. 4 points

Ravenheart Edge of Sanity - Twilight

So, I hit play on this song. I'm sitting back, enjoying the ambiance and pristine beauty, and then the riff happens. A wicked smile creeps over my face as I begin to bob my head along, and then the OTHER riff happens.  :omg: This song went from "pretty fucking sweet" to "Holy fucking christ on a garlic cracker awesome" within about 2 minutes. I've heard Dan Swano's work with Bloodbath, but other than that I didn't have much frame of reference to his numerous projects. If this song (and the rest of the album which I downloaded immediately) is any indicator, Dan Swano is to become one of the chosen few on my list of the best musicians of all time. The most interesting aspect of this song, to me, is how prominent the bass is, and it instantly gives this band a defining sound that sticks out from all the other death metal in the universe. 6 points

ClairvoyantCat Martin Grech - I Am Chromosome

Ah, here we go. Some neat, tribal stuff and-HOLY FUCKING JESUS IT'S ANOTHER EPIC RIFF. Seriously, I don't know where the fuck stuff like this has been all my life, but I want it all. ALL OF IT I TELL YOU. I really have no idea how to define this stuff. It's definitely progressive metal, but with little bits of electronic tossed in. I've been looking for another genre-bender for a long time, and I've finally found it. The whole song has a very processed feeling, which I feel helps out that electronic, robotic feeling. Something tells me this guy's voice should annoy me, but it doesn't. He kind of sounds like a less annoying Matt Bellamy. Hell, I'll take it. This album will definitely be on my list for whenever I need an awesome change of pace. 5 points

YtseBitsySpider Unearth - Shadows in the Light

Yeesh. Well, it's better than Asking Alexandria, I'll give you that much. Unfortunately, it's not by much. This whole deathcore movement just makes me sad. It's like they took everything cool about metal, threw it away, took all the annoying elements of hardcore and threw them right in. Sure, the riffs are heavy, but it doesn't excuse the whole "uninspired breakdown every 5 seconds to promote hardcore dancing and pussy-moshing" or the high, screamy vocals. Some bands can pull off that style of vocal, but this is not one of them. I'm feeling generous though, so I'll give you an extra point if you promise not to send any more. :p 2 points

zxkhlo Neurosis - No River to Take Me Home

Man, this song is fucking bleak. After getting into Battle of Mice recently, I've been up for some more post-metal. If this is a good indicator of the rest of this band's output, I'd say I'll enjoy exploring their discography. I'm finding it kind of hard to write about this song. Maybe it's because I'm listening to it right now and it's pretty hypnotic. While the length isn't too terrible, it still feels like it goes on for a bit longer than it needs to. The coolest part of the song has to be the end, where everything mellows out, only to be brought back into heavier territory with the harmonizing guitar lines. Great stuff. 4 points

ariich Protest the Hero - Bloodmeat

Well, way to cash in on my recent SikTh binging. Mathcore FTW. I can't really find myself listening to much else, lately. Something tells me these vocals would usually bug me, but you're pretty lucky that SikTh's vocal acrobatics have kind of desensitized me to this style of singing. I especially like the "DUH DUH DUHDUH"s and how they add to the rhythmic crushing of that section. I absolutely love the interplay between the guitarists. Oh, and for those wondering, the end of this song is a perfect example of a breakdown done right. I'm positively drooling at the thought of exploring this band further. 5 points

The Scoreboard:
Ravenheart - 6
Gorille85 - 5
ClairvoyantCat - 5
ariich - 5
Dark Castle - 4
73109 - 4
zxkhlo - 4
YtseBitsySpider - 2

Next round is open again (as all rounds will be). Try to get me a submission by Friday. Remember that the scoring system is arranged in such a way that it will almost always be anyone's game. Keep up the good work, soldiers.

Gorille85 Shining - The Madness and the Damage Done

This is easily the most unique offering this round. I can't say I've ever heard anything quite like this. The guitar tone sounds fuzzy and digitized, and the vocals...man, I have no idea what the fuck they're doing to the guy's voice in the beginning, but I love it. Technically, it's very impressive, but it's got this really cool industrial vibe too. Fuck it. It's really tough to explain what I like about this song, but I do. 4 points

Dark Castle Indian - No Grace

Black metal has always been a hit-or-miss genre for me. I like bands like Rotting Christ, and some Enslaved, but on the whole I wouldn't really consider myself a fan of the movement. I much prefer bands that incorporate elements of black metal with others. On the other side, doom metal is a genre that I can't really say I like all that much on its own either. Swallow the Sun and Candlemass are pretty good, of course. So, considering this song blends the two "meh" genres into something pretty cool made me quite happy. Those riffs are absolutely crushing. 4 points

73109 Nightwish - Ghost River

I always kind of ignored Nightwish. No real reason, I just felt like they weren't really up my alley. The Wishmaster video with the misheard lyrics is fucking hilarious, of course, but it didn't leave me much desire to explore them further. This song did the exact opposite. While Wishmaster seemed like an overly cheesy power metal song, this song sounds...heavy. I don't have anything against power metal of course, but I'd listen to it a lot more if it all sounded like this (though I guess the term is symphonic metal, but I feel like there's quite a bit of overlap). The vocals are probably the strongest point of the song. I love how they compliment each other. Overall, excellent pick. 5 points

YtseBitsySpider Theocracy - Laying the Demon to Rest

There you go! Barring the religious angle, this song is one hell of a ride. The singer's got a phenomenal voice, and I love the transitions from the thrashy stuff to the soft bits. The chorus is pretty catchy too. Not much else to say about this one, but I loved it. 5 points

Ravenheart Dan Swano - Add Reality

I'm glad you've found the secret key to winning this roulette, because I wasn't even aware that it existed. This guy is a fucking monster. Everything about this song kicks my ass. The soaring keyboard melody, the slick guitar riff underneath it, Dan's excellent growls, the bit where it switches over to clean vocals. There's nothing I can even say to do this song justice. Amazing. 6 Points

Clairvoyant Cat Hidden Orchestra - Dust (Floex Remix)

This was a very risky pick. Thankfully, I can say that I enjoy the hell out of it. Metal is obviously a great choice to send me, but I totally dig this kind of stuff. It's all very relaxing. The clarinet work is astounding as well. 5 points

ariich Sylosis - Beyond the Ressurected

I'd heard of this band before, but never really thought to look into them. I like pretty much everything about it aside from the vocals, which are still decent. I like how the riffs are quite a bit more technical than most thrash. It kind of reminds me of Nevermore with a harsh vocalist. 4 points

zxkhlo/NocturnalConspiracy Agalloch - Falling Snow

Kind of like the Sylosis song, I like everything except for the harsher vocals. I've never been fond of the raspy stuff, and this was no exception. I can definitely see why a lot of people on DTF have a massive hard-on for this band though. It's a very wintery sound. 4 points

The Scoreboard:
Ravenheart - 12
ClairvoyantCat - 10
Gorille85 - 9
ariich - 9
73109 - 9
Dark Castle - 8
zxkhlo/NocturnalConspiracy - 8
YtseBitsySpider - 7

Also, the reason you probably dug the Nightwish song but not the other one you heard is because the one you heard had a different singer when they were really full of cheese.

That whole Dan Swano album is fucking god beast material.  I can't take credit for it though, Zander got me hooked as well.
I'll give it another shot I guess...but...he just seemed like another yeller...and I didn't hear any tracks with "great keyboard - or clean vocals"

Listen to Moontower, and Edge of Sanity's Purgatory Afterglow. Good mix of clean and growl, kind of like Opeth. I actually like Edge's album better than anything Opeth ever did though.

5 points

And I remember when you told me Theocracy didn't do anything for you!  Maybe you just hadn't heard the right song.  Mirror Of Souls, which has "Demon," is a fantastic album.  Dare I say, though, that their newest, As The World Bleeds, may be even better.  It came out in November and added the only real element somewhat missing from MoS: absolutely sick leads and solos.

Gorille85 Stolen Babies - Mind Your Eyes

Excellent stuff right here. I love the girl's voice and how the guitars blend with the synths. I also like how fast-paced the song is. The riffs are nice and catchy, and in general it's just a massively enjoyable listen. Avant-Garde Metal FTW. 5 points

zxkhlo/NocturnalConspiracy Some Ambient Shit I Dunno

This song made for pretty good background music, but there wasn't much there that kept me going back to the song to hear it again. It pretty much summed up my problem with ambient music as a whole. I just feel like it doesn't really go anywhere. 3 points

Dark Castle Dawnbringer - The Devil

YES. Man, this song hit it right on the head. It's technical, heavy, and just flat out awesome. I really like how the song sounds like a big melting pot of metal. There's the soaring guitar melodies that wouldn't sound out of place on a melodeath album, and then there's the thrashy drumming and the Maiden-esque riffing. And the singer combined with the production really gives me a late 80s vibe that can't be beat. Well done. 5 points

73109 Falconer - Lord of the Blacksmith

Good lord. I was going to really try to take it easy on this song, but holy fucking christ. If people on this board think Symphony X is cheesy, I don't want to know what they'd consider this. When the chorus of this song came in I ejected nacho-flavored processed cheese spread out of every single orifice of my body. The lyrics are just fucking atrocious as well. If this band isn't a parody band, I offer my condolences to the country of Sweden for being the birthplace of this. At least the riffs are heavy and you can kind of hear the bass. 2 points if they're serious, 5 points if they're pulling an elaborate troll, because it got me big time if they are

YtseBitsySpider Ozric Tentacles - Coily

Excellent. I enjoy this type of synthy stuff more than people here might imagine, but it's actually the first style of music I liked that wasn't late 90s bubblegum pop. The fact that it's in a ton of different time signatures just makes it even better. I will be chilling out to this band for a very long time. 6 points

Ravenheart Nightingale - The Dreamreader

More Swano = more points. This song was pretty close to being the round-winner, but I miss the growls.  :( Thankfully Swano's clean voice is just as awesome to listen to. I especially love when he harmonizes. He reminds me very much of a slightly different Mikael Akerfeldt, which is great considering how much I love him as a singer (and funnily enough, I wish he'd growl more as well). I'm going to have to issue a ban on anything else Swano related (as long as he's not the main contributor). It's really not fair to the rest of the contestants, and I already know that I want everything this man has performed on. :p 5 points

ClairvoyantCat The Flashbulb - Autumn Insomnia Session

Very chilled, very relaxing, and it's got that nice electronic vibe that a lot of people are tapping into with this roulette. It's got a very solid groove too. I could listen to this whether I feel like sleeping or bobbing my head along. The drums are also very impressive. 5 points

ariich Cherry Poppin' Daddies - Here Comes the Snake

Damn. This song is catchy as hell. I love ska, and this is exactly why. It's very sultry and seductive, and I'm very glad that it didn't devolve into pop-punk like most ska bands seem to want to do these days.  If you have more stuff like this, I want it. 5 points

The Scoreboard:
Ravenheart - 17
ClairvoyantCat - 15
Gorille85 - 14
ariich - 14
YtseBitsySpider - 13
Dark Castle - 13
73109 - 11
zxkhlo/NocturnalConspiracy - 11

Lots of high-scoring stuff this round. Keep it up, folks!  :metal

ClairvoyantCat The World/Inferno Friendship Society - Brother of the Mayor of Bridgewater

Capitalizing on Rich's success in the last round, here we have another song with some ska elements. This song kind of reminded me of a few of the bonus songs in Guitar Hero 1. Bouncy, fun, and just a great rock song. Massive props to the band name as well. 5 points

ariich Big Bad Voodoo Daddy - Mr. Pinstripe Suit

God damn. I never realized how much I enjoyed swing music until I heard this song. It's got a pretty strong Cat Empire vibe, so it was bound to do extremely well. Much like Seth's song, the chorus is permanently lodged into my brain. And of course, any music like this reminds me of the dancing sequence in The Mask, so that's a plus. 5 points

73109 dredg - Sanzen

Having never heard dredg, I had no clue what to expect with this song. I wasn't very impressed though. It's perfectly listenable, and the singer does have a very nice voice. There's just very little that jumps out at me and makes me want to explore them further. 3 points

Ravenheart Skyfire - Esoteric

I usually find melodeath to be incredibly bland. I'm happy to say this was an exception. Like Dan Swano, the growls in this song are pretty easy to understand, and this is probably the first melodeath band that I haven't shrugged off as nothing more than a decent change of pace once in a while. The choir break in the middle was pretty sick too. Still, the fact remains that melodeath just doesn't resonate with me as much as standard death metal does. 4 points

Gorille85 Foxy Shazam - Oh Lord

Holy shit. I have absolutely no fucking clue what I'm listening to, but it's awesome. Everything about this song hit me like a ton of bricks. The singer is phenomenal, the chorus is an immediate classic, and the song overall just makes me one happy motherfucker. The music video is brilliant too. 6 points

zxkhlo/NocturnalConspiracy Tortoise - Djed

This was a very cool song. It's post-rock without being dense and unmemorable. The other thing I liked is how they only droned along on the same part for a short time, instead of extending each individual part out for 5 minutes. The xylophone section in particular was quite impressive. Still, the song's way too long for its own good (20 minutes). 4 points

Dark Castle In Solitude - Serpents Are Rising

Awesome. I'm getting a big Mercyful Fate vibe from these guys. Even though their singer lacks the ball-squashing wails of the almighty King Diamond, the vocals still fit the music fairly well. It would be infinitely wise of the singer to tie several rubber bands around his nuts though, because I feel like this song would be 100% better with King Diamond vocals. Still, very solid song with excellent guitar melodies. 4 points

YtseBitsySpider Maxxess - Slow Motion

Now that's the ticket. The song has a very Floydian vibe, and it's generally extremely relaxing. It also reminds me of Buckethead's softer material (More Electric Tears than Colma). In fact, the change in guitar tone halfway through was a total Buckethead trick. The accompanying video fit the song perfectly. I could very easily imagine myself watching the ocean at night while listening to this. 5 points

The Scoreboard:
Ravenheart - 21
ClairvoyantCat - 20
Gorille85 - 20
ariich - 19
YtseBitsySpider - 18
Dark Castle - 17
zxkhlo/NocturnalConspiracy - 15
73109 - 14

Gorille85 Frank Turner - I Still Believe

Nice, upbeat song. It's really tough to get into this after I've been binging on something as energetic as Foxy Shazam, but I still enjoyed it. It's got a nice, bouncy, almost country twang to it that should bother me, but it doesn't. As annoying as the ever-present "HEY YAY"'s were at the beginning, I found them pretty catchy by the end. Funny how that works. :p Good song, just not as awesome as Foxy. Oh yeah, and harmonica solos have no place in rock music. Ever. 4 Points

YtseBitsySpider Circus Maximus - Glory of the Empire

Hey look! It's the unicyclist from the cover of ADTOE! Glad to see he made it safely to the ground. Anyway, I see a lot of people dismiss these guys as a DT clone. While I can see why they get that reputation, there's still enough in this song to differentiate them from DT's brand of prog metal. I especially enjoyed the intro with the flutes. When the main melody kicks in, the DT worship starts to get a bit more prominent. The singer reminds me a bit of the guy from Vanden Plas, and I think he's the strongest link in that band. These guys probably deserve a bit more recognition. Good, solid prog metal. 5 points

Ravenheart Type O Negative - Wolf Moon (Including Zoanthropic Paranoia)

Type O is one of those bands that I hear a lot of praise for, but I don't ever really get the urge to see what they have to offer. Having heard this song, I can say they're pretty cool. The music has a very dark atmosphere with the fantasy keyboards (Not sure how else to describe them). The singer has a very fitting voice for this type of music, deep and powerful. This is good stuff, but it's nothing mind-blowing. 4 points

73109 Machine Head - Imperium

I've only heard one or two songs from these guys, and they both made me go "meh". This song was no exception. I have no idea what it is about this band, but it just does absolutely nothing for me. It's not that it's bad music by any means, it's just not interesting enough to make me want to listen to it. Plenty of other bands do what Machine Head is doing, and they do it much better. Oh, and the half-growled vocals are borderline torturous to listen to, like John Bush but slightly worse somehow. 2 points

ClairvoyantCat Jaga Jazzist - Oslo Skyline

This is pretty neat. It's, like you described so eloquently in your PM, jazzy, jammy, posty, and instrumental. It's very relaxing, even with the heavier sections. I especially like the section where it settles down, and the synth waves just swell around the speakers. I really don't know what else to say about it though.  I liked it. :P 5 points

ariich Guthrie Govan - Sevens

I haven't been into shredding quite as much lately. Not sure why, it just hasn't spoken to me like it usually does. This song totally flipped that on its head though. This is some very creative stuff. It's much more interesting than the typical sweep-tapping (though I love Yngwie as much as the next guy). This also benefits from a change in dynamics once in a while. Most shred guitarists tend to play a fairly static brand of music, but this is certainly not a victim of that generalization. The sick groove that happens around the 3:00 mark is so much  :metal 5 points

zxkhlo/NocturnalConspiracy/Tick Oceansize - Unfamiliar

Like Type O, this was a band that I heard a lot of praise for, but never felt like checking out. I definitely should have though. This kind of reminds me of alt-rock with a more progressive edge to it. Though, some sections are also delightfully trippy. I really need to explore this band further. 5 points

Dark Castle The Wretched End - Fleshbomb

Awesome song title, first off. Even more awesome song. It's very dark, extremely heavy, and the vocals really compliment the music well. These guys remind me a lot of Vreid (another Norwegian thrash band) with better production, and that's a very good thing. I like to think this is the only roulette where a thrash song can win a round right after a swing-revival song wins the previous round, but I genuinely loved the fuck out of this song. 6 points

The Scoreboard:
Ravenheart - 25
ClairvoyantCat - 25
Gorille85 - 24
ariich - 24
YtseBitsySpider - 23
Dark Castle - 23
zxkhlo/NocturnalConspiracy/Tick - 20
73109 - 16

Sorry for the massive delay guys, but here you go. Notice how the spread between 1st and 6th place is a whopping 2 points. This is shaping up to be quite the interesting fight to the finish.

zxkhlo/NocturnalConspiracy/Tick
:lol

And yeah, Govan is perfectly capable of shredding, but he's really not a "shredder", he's amazingly restrained and varied with his playing, so he does some outrageously good stuff at times, but will throw in simple groovy riffs when the music calls for it as well. Check out his Erotic Cakes album!

Bump Granted

Gorille85 Dir en Grey - Vinushka

Chalk another band off of the "Really wanted to check out but never really got the opportunity" list. I was very excited when this song showed up, and it certainly did not disappoint. The transitions between soft and heavy are very well-executed, and the riffs just own. The vocalist has a very unique singing voice in the soft parts, and his mix of growls and screams reminds me a lot of SikTh (More in the diversity than anything, though). Extra points for audible bass as well. I'd say my favorite part about this song is the atmosphere. It has a great build up to the fast part, and the abrupt transitions between soft, ethereal bliss and unrelenting brutality keeps the song interesting. Overall, this song is brilliant, and very much deserving of winning the round. 6 points

73109 Shinedown - 45

I know Alex would kill me if I didn't give this song a fair chance, so I did. The only song I had heard from this band before was Devour. A friend of mine in high school really liked the song, and I kind of viewed it as just another alt-rock song. Consistently, that's about how I feel about this song. The only really extraordinary aspect of this song is the vocals, and there's really only one part (about 15 seconds) that really got my attention. I didn't hate this song. There just wasn't anything particularly memorable about it. 3 points

ClairvoyantCat Rosetta - Renew

This song was pretty interesting. Post-metal tends to be pretty hit-or-miss for me though. The slightly core-like vocals rubbed me the wrong way, but everything else about the song fits nicely within the post-metal niche. The riffs are heavy and dark, and it generally filled me with a feeling of dread and depression. You finally broke your 5 point streak. Unfortunately, it wasn't up to 6. :p 4 points

Dark Castle A Life Once Lost - Needle Man

Heavy heavy heavy. The vocalist kind of reminds me of a slightly more visceral Rob Dukes (Exodus). The opening riff that comes back a few times is pretty mint, and not too djenty. Other than that, I really don't know what else to say about this song. It's a nice, solid metal tune. Not particularly jazzed about it, but it certainly wasn't bad. 3 points

Ravenheart Eternal Tears of Sorrow - Angelheart, Ravenheart

Oh shit. The song that inspired Zander's username (I assume). I was preparing my anus for this one, and it certainly delivered. After the cool, traditional symphonic metal opening, this song turns into something otherworldly. This has to be one of the first symphonic metal bands that doesn't sound cheesy as hell. It's got an unbelievable gothic vibe that adds so much to an already evil sound. The growls are pretty easy to understand. This song fought with Marc's quite a bit for the top spot, but it lost by a pubic hair. 5 points

YtseBitsySpider Shadrane - Lantern's Dance

I really wish the opening motif of this song went on forever, and they expanded it into its own instrumental song. It's a really great bit, and I think they could do a lot more with it. I was kind of upset when it was over. The vocals seem like typical power metal fare, which didn't really fit the tone set with the first part, but they're decent enough. The spoken word section pretty much made nacho cheese rain from a cloud above my head, but the next part was pretty neat. The riff over the plucky (I have no idea what else to call it :p) melody was a cool contrast. Overall, this is a pretty cool song, brought down by the intro being far superior to anything else in the song, and the spoken word part. 4 points

ariich Periphery - Icarus Lives

Well, coming from a fine djentlemen such as yourself I was sort of expecting you to transition djently from the swing/ska stuff into the djent. The song's pretty straightforward, and the vocals in the chorus are very nice. Of course, I can never listen to a song like this without screaming DJENT DJENT DJENT DJENT DJENT DJENT DJENT DJENT DJENT DJENT DJENT DJENT DJENT DJENT DJENT DJENT DJENT DJENT DJENT DJENT. Either way, I enjoy djent from time to time, so you lucked out with this one. 4 points

zxklho/NocturnalConspiracy/tick/obscure Deftones - Digital Bath

Here's a band that I heard a lot of hype for, and never really felt like checking out. The chorus is pretty strong. The rest of it is decently listenable, but like a few songs this round, nothing overly memorable. 3 points

The Scoreboard:
Ravenheart - 30
Gorille85 - 30
ClairvoyantCat - 29
ariich - 28
YtseBitsySpider - 27
Dark Castle - 26
zxkhlo/NocturnalConspiracy/Tick - 23
73109 - 19

Last round, motherfuckers. In an effort to avoid a tie, I will be grading the next round based on a descending 8 point scale. The top song will get 8, the next 7, etc.

The hold ups for a few of the rounds have been my fault, but a PM reminder really wouldn't have hurt. It may "only be a few days", but when it's every round, it means others don't get to start theirs. You don't have to force them to hurry, but I know for myself, a quick PM reminder would have prompted me to get off my arse and just send something!

You guys sent some weird shit this round.  :lol

Dark Castle Kvelertak - Offernatt

Damn. This song certainly delivered. I was totally into it as soon as the intro kicked in. The song's pretty upbeat for the black metal vocals going on behind it, which provided a pretty unique vibe that I liked a lot more than I would have expected. The riff that kicks in around 3:10 is dynamite. Definitely the best song of the round. 8 points

YtseBitsySpider Scar Symmetry - Prism and Gate

I've been aware of the existence of this band for a while. I've heard a few odd songs (and I think this was actually one of them, but whatever), and thought they were pretty okay, but nothing mind-blowing. My opinion has changed for the better. I really like how much diversity there is in the vocals. And the clean vocals don't sound whiny! Awesome! I also liked the dueling solos. Always a plus in my book. Looks like I definitely need to check these guys out a bit more. This must be one of the only melodeath bands that I didn't find boring and bland. 7 points

73109 Cruachan - Ride On

I liked this a lot more than I thought I would (and apparently more than you thought I would). The guy singer sounds like Lou Reed, which is absolutely not a good thing, but the chick's voice is very nice, and overall the song has a really nice atmosphere. When the two are singing together, the guy's Lou Reed-isms aren't as prominent. And, when the song starts to get heavy, the Lou Reed disappears completely. I really wonder why he had to sound like that for the first bit of the song. I'm not sure why you thought I wouldn't like this. It's probably one of the better things you've sent me through the roulette.  :P One point deduction for the Lou Reed impressions, but this was a solid choice. 6 points

ariich Within Temptation - Iron

I've heard Sharon's work with Ayreon (and she's hot as shit), but never really looked into this band. This song feels really anthem-like, like symphonic metal should. It makes me want to grab a broadsword and slay some dragons. Sharon's voice actually sounds a lot better on this than she sounded on Into the Electric Castle (though her part was kind of limited, and singing next to Anneke van Giersbergen would make anyone sound like musical shit, so it was unavoidable). The guitar solo didn't really live up to expectations though. I've grown accustomed to symphonic metal where the guitarist just lets loose every chance he gets. I especially loved the key change at the repetition of the last chorus. Overdone? Yes. Still good? Absolutely. 5 points

Gorille85 Ulver - Porn Pieces or The Scars of Cold Kisses

This was an interesting choice. I wasn't really sure what I was expecting going in, but it really surprised me. The electronic elements mixed with the live drums gives off a pretty unique atmosphere, since most electronic music uses drum samples in some form. The second half of the song was even cooler. The vocals added to the atmosphere set up by the first half of the song quite nicely. Overall, this was a pretty chill song, and definitely one of the stronger picks this round. Still, I wish there was a bit more going on in it. 4 points

Ravenheart Insomnium - In the Halls of Awaiting

Man, I really wanted to like this song. Nay, I wanted to love the fuck out of this song. You’ve had such an astounding track record in this roulette that it was really paining me while I was listening to it, like I was missing something. This song’s just way too long for its own good, and it doesn’t really do anything extraordinary with that length. Even the softer, atmospheric bit had the potential to be really awesome, but it just didn’t jive with me for whatever reason. For what it’s worth, you’ve introduced me to Dan Swano and his numerous projects, so that’s a victory in my book. You also kind of got screwed by the descending points system in this round. I’d probably have given this a 4, but since the 4 spot’s already been taken, I have to bring it down to 3 points

Clairvoyant Cat Shiina Ringo - Honnou

I dug this song. It was nice, fun, and irresistibly bouncy. The piano is a pretty cool choice, and it blends well with the bass. Her voice is pretty infectious too. Unfortunately, this song is getting screwed by the descending points scale. I probably would have given this a 4 if it wasn't for that. 2 points

zxkhlo/NocturnalConspiracy/tick/obscure/bosk1 Some dubstep shit I dunno

It's not as bad as brostep, but it still left me with that meh taste and was by far the weakest pick this round. 1 Point

The Scoreboard:
YtseBitsySpider - 34
Dark Castle - 34
Gorille85 - 34
Ravenheart - 33
ariich - 33
ClairvoyantCat - 31
73109 - 25
zxkhlo/NocturnalConspiracy/Tick/obscure/bosk1 - 24

Despite my best efforts, we have a 3 way tie. The 3 of you: Send me one more song. The rest of you: Thanks for helping round out my musical taste.  :heart

Title: Obscure's "No Obscure, No Obscure, Just Obscure" OBSCURE OBSCURES
Post by: Ultimetalhead on March 07, 2012, 06:33:54 PM
Alright, it's come down to the obscure. 3 obscures have tied up what was a most epic obscure. The obscure round consisted of 3 obscures, all very enjoyable in their own right, but one obscure clearly stood out among the obscure. Without further obscure, let's have the obscures.

Gorille85/obscure Gotye - Somebody That I Used to Know (featuring obscure)

It pains me to say obscure, but I loved the ever-living obscure out of this obscure. I went into the obscure fully expecting to hate it, but I was kicked in the exact opposite obscure. The first 2 obscures or so were fairly boring, until the obscure kicked in and the obscures got more passionate. Obscure's appearance was the first I had ever heard of her obscure, and she didn't disappoint either.

Dark Castle/obscure Nachtmystium - Addicts

This obscure had a pretty neat obscure going. The obscures remind me of an obscure called Vreid, whom I'm sure I've mentioned before in this since I remember having another obscure with similar obscures. The obscure stuff also adds for a nice Cynic-like obscure. Overall, this was another very enjoyable obscure that showed why you've made it this obscure in this obscure.

YtseBitsySpider/obscure Devildriver - End of the Line

Devildriver's another obscure of those obscures that I've heard because of Rock Band and other various obscures, but never really got the obscure to explore them outside of obscure. The obscures in this song are nice and obscure, but the obscures didn't do much for me. They seemed kind of odd for this obscure of obscure. I've come to appreciate obscure with a more melodic obscure rather than the throaty obscure (though I still love Slayer and other obscures that use similar obscures). Either way, this obscure was pretty solid, but obscure really separated it from the other death/thrash obscure that I listen to on a regular obscure.

So, the long awaited obscure of this obscure is...

GORILLE85/OBSCURE

Marc, you have introduced me to a wide obscure of new obscures, and I owe a lot of my current musical obscure to you. You certainly deserved to win.  :tup

Obscure else, thanks a heap for playing. I gained a lot of awesome obscure from obscure and every obscure of you. You're all obscures in my obscure.  :heart
