Hey guys. I'm still kinda new here, but well known from the Mike Portnoy Forum. I'm up next to showcase my Top 50 albums of all time (at least from 1-15-2011 backwards). All The Good, Bad, Ugly, Sexy, Controversial, Universally Agreed Upon, and Meh albums you can handle.
I'll be working on my list tonight, and start showcasing the top 50 when I wake up later today. Most likely starting during the Packers game tomorrow.
To those that really know me, you will know my top 3 already. But the other 47, well there's going to be a lot of surprises. Hope you guys dig it!

DAMN, this is going to be harder then I thought. When looking through all of my albums I've been putting together the ones that have impacted me the most. I picked 189 albums. :rollin
Now I'm down to 60, and it's like Sophie's Choice. But I promise I'll be able to get things going later today with number 50. It'll be worth it.

It's all good man. But if You are ever interested. I do keep an MP3 copy of every show I do. Sometimes the bands request a copy of the show they are on so they can enjoy it, and I send some out to friends who miss a show.
But I'll be starting this in roughly a half hour. Still feeling really crappy but I do have the strength to get started on this, and to see if the Packers win tonight.
There is 50 here, but as I've posted above, I had 189 life changing albums in my lifetime, all of which are equally worthy of top 50 status. But after thinking a lot about it, these really are my personal top 50.

Weezer- The Blue Album
What the hell is this doing on my list? haha. Back when I was actually getting into music. Not just Metal, but actually realizing what music was. I discovered The Blue Album. While many diehard Weezer fans will disagree, they have never topped this album, which is part of why I never got into them much. Sure they have great albums, but they have a lot of shit too. (Have you heard all of Raditude?) The Blue Album is the definitive 90's Pop Rock Album. Every song is just as catchy as the song before it. And any of the songs that were on this album, could have and should have been a single. I'm still a Weezer fan to a little bit of an extent, but again. Nothing touches The Blue Album, it's Pop Rock Perfection, before it became so diluted and boring.

49.) Metallica- ...And Justice For All
I was born the day Harvester Of Sorrow was released as a single (August, 19th, 1988) Of course I gotta be a Metallica fan. Metallica was the first Metal band I truly appreciated. It was 1999 and Garage Inc. just came out (my first CD I ever bough, which was a double album, maybe explains why I became a Prog fan later). Justice is the proggiest of all the Metallica albums. It's also the darkest and I dare say the one with the most emotion and anger, because of the loss of Cliff Burton. all 9 songs are just pure Metal. One is the first song that I actually realized, "Wow, you can play a bass drum that fast?" It helped me realize what double bass was (although, try to find double bass after this album from Metallica) and that not all music was easy 4/4 rock. Justice may not be the first album that you show a music fan to get them into metal. But if you wanna appreciate a good mixture of Prog and Thrash Metal. Justice is where it's at. and although there is no bass guitar (or just very little of it) It still stands the test of time to this day.

48.) Atheist- Unquestionable Presence
Easily the most underrated of the 90's Tech Metal bands (including Death, Cynic, etc), Atheist was a band that never really caught on, but loved by all who has heard them. Steve Flynn is an absolute god when it comes to the drums, and this album showcases his best work. I was fortunate enough to catch these guys back a few years ago opening for Primal Fear at Minnesota Metalfest, and although it wasn't the same as being able to see them back in the early 90s. I never thought I would be able to see them live. So it made up for everything. Steve Flynn is just as badass as he ever was. It's one of the first Tech metal albums that actually featured other elements including Jazz to their style, which has influenced so many bands that are doing the same today. Any of those current bands will tell you their love for Atheist, if they don't they are lying or oblivious. For some of the best drumming in the 90s, and to hear where Tech Metal really started getting good. check out Unquestionable Presence.

47.) In Flames- Clayman
Clayman, In Flames Best work *Fully expects some hate for that statement*. It has everything that I'm looking for in a Melodic Death Metal album. Elements of Pop, Thrash, a little Prog, and overall just catchy fun, and badass Metal. Something that has been lost over the years. After this album is when In Flames, to most people started their detour into shit. I don't agree, that didn't happen until A Sense Of Purpose, and even more so with the new album *The song Liberation will be hitting your local rock station shortly, if not already. it's just....wrong* But for the highest peak in In Flames' history. Clayman is their best by far. One listen should be all the proof you need.

46.) Blind Guardian- At The Edge Of Time
Blind Guardian is the best Power Metal band still going today. Every one of their albums are classic and deserve this spot just as much as this album...but this album hit home for me more then the rest. At The Edge Of Time is the definition of Epic. from the opening of Sacred World, to the pure Power Metal intensity that is A Voice In The Dark. Hansi is just a legendary badass. Plain and simple. Seeing them live back in November 2010, was one of the highlights of my concert going experience. Live, the songs are just as amazing. While there are tons and tons of other great Power Metal bands out there, Blind Guardian is at the top. and At The Edge Of Time, is the perfect place to start.

Weezer is a good band, but since the green album they have been in the good album/shitty album rate. it sucks considering Rivers does know how to write.

You should give Atheist a chance when you have some spare time, it is very well worth it.

45.) Sepultura- Chaos A.D.
Sepultura lost me after this album. No, not just because Max Cavalera left after Roots. But because the music to me, got stale after this album. But Chaos A.D. ...........DAMN! This is GROOVE Metal. It covers so many territories (no pun intended) on this album from Thrash and almost Death Metal, to the Groove Metal that makes it so catchy. Igor Cavalera is absolutely phenomenal on this album and I will say his best work. It's what inspired me to be more free flowing with my own drumming. and the production on this album was stellar for a 1993 Metal album. Everything before Chaos A.D. is some of the finest Thrash/Death Metal out there, but this Chaos A.D. was the perfect transition album, although their transition went wrong....oh so wrong. This is my favorite of the Sepultura discography. Just give a listen to understand why.

That was a nice comeback album for Blind Guardian after the turd that was Twist. I prefer Imaginations and Nightfall a little more.

I thought there was some great songs on Twist, but yeah, they needed to improve.
I actually own the Cassette as well. got it for free at a garage sale. haha

43.) Nevermore- Dead Heart In A Dead World
Nevermore, the definition of Progressive Thrash. Dead Heart In A Dead World has it all. When they go fast, they go FAST, then they go Proggy and Technical, they go PROGGY and TECHNICAL. And when they go Melodic, they write some of the most heartfelt, emotional songs that a metal band can do without sounding like they belong at Hot Topic. This album is a staple in 00's Metal music. Newer bands since then wish they could sound like this (All that Remains tried covering Believe In Nothing, while close, it didn't make it up to snuff), but there is only 1 Nevermore. If you want powerfully technical and dark beautiful songs, Dead Heart In A Dead World is for you.

42.) Redemption- This Mortal Coil
This is BY FAR my favorite Redemption album. I love the Origins Of Ruin (If it wasn't for that, I never would have been able to name their DVD, Frozen In The Moment) But This Mortal Coil...Actually made me cry (Only one other album has done that to me, which will be MUCH later in this countdown). As someone who has a lot of people from different types of cancer, and other terminal illnesses, by the time of No Tickets To The Funeral, just listening to the lyrics made me stream tears. and by the time of Departure Of The Pale Horse, I was practically cheering in my chair. Anytime someone who can survive their health given death-sentence is a hero in my eyes. It shows us that we can make it in life. And almost most importantly, to appreciate everything we have in life. But besides the concept of this album, the music just kicks fucking ass! Real, True, Progressive Metal. I love every second of this album. And the bonus Disc of Cover songs are so damn cool as well. One of the best Prog Metal albums of the 2010's, without question!

41.) Mutemath- Mutemath
Back to the left turns already. Mutemath does Prog without actually being Prog. Every song is so different from the next. Electronic, Alternative, Poppy, Prog, Rock. This album is a great chill album for me, even though it does feature some great faster songs like Chaos and Control, songs like You Are Mine are just perfect to sit back and relax and enjoy the music. And their next two albums have been drastically different then their self-titled debut. If that's not Progressive, I don't know what is. If you need a break from the Hard Rock and Metal templates. Get this album, kick back and chill. We all need to do that from time to time.

This is an absolutely amazing list so far. Not familiar with Mutemath, but the rest are all absolutely killer. Love Redemption, Nevermore, Weezer, Sepultura, In Flames, Athiest and Heartwork is amazing. Interesting pick for Blind Guardian. That is probably one of my least fav BG albums.

Mutemath is one of the best Alternative bands going right now, it's perfect, like I said, to just relax to, while hearing some killer songwriting and instrumentation.
Interesting that ATEOT is your least favorite. I'd put it at least higher then A Twist In The Myth amongst BG fans.

40.) Muse- Absolution
The Last good Muse album so far. (That's right I said it). There was a couple good songs on Black Holes & Revelations, and The Resistance, just flat out sucked. Absolution on the other hand (like a lot of albums you've noticed that I've mentioned) was Muse reaching their pinnacle. It's what I love in Rock music, left of center, thinking outside the box style alternative Rock with elements of Prog and sparse electronics. I would give anything for Muse to realize that they can still be rockin' without having to sound like a Electronic Pop band, that they have become. Absolution is beautiful in every sense of the word, and is still heavy enough to satisfy any rock and Metal fan. Excellent Musicianship and song writing. Something I really, really miss. Maybe one day. Till then I'll always have Absolution.

Man, you're powering thru this list. Nice so far (little heavier than my normal liking). Somehow, I got a hold of all BG albums a long time ago, and never really gave them as much attention as I probably should have. Unfortunately, Edge of Time isn't one that I do have. Will have to Grooveshark it sometime.
Mortal Coil is awesome. Redeemed my faith in Redemption (wasn't a huge fan of Origins or Fullness).

39.) Dillinger Escape Plan- Calculating Infinity
Probably the most chaotic album on this entire list. This is the album that helped me get into more into Extreme Metal. While this is technically a Mathcore album, it got me to discover the beauty in chaos. Drummer Chris Pennie (who later went on to join, then quit Coheed & Cambria) is an absolute monster on this album, and recorded it on such a small kit. If you never heard this type of music before you will listen to the first track and go "WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS???" You might even hate it at first, but if you give it a chance, it will grow on you and you can grow to love it. Such technical ability and absolutely insane sections of music. but amongst that chaos there is sections that are absolutely beautiful as well just like the eye of the storm. For one of the most insane, but catchy albums to be put out there, outside of noise and grindcore album. Just give this one a chance. YOu may really be happy you did.

38.) Fear Factory- Archetype
There isn't much industrial music that I like, but when it's done right, I absolutely love it. That prime example is Fear Factory. Besides the album that followed it, Transgression, this album will go down as one of the lowest albums in FF's career. And that's just not right. I consider it their best. Why? Because they were all angry and pissed off, and it created some of the best songs of their career in one collection. Also drummer Raymond Hererra displays his best chops in the album opener, Slave Labor. This is such an underrated album for the fact that as long as guitarist Dino is in the band, those song will never be played (Almost all the pissed off lyrics are directed at him, with exception of the song Cyber Waste, which is about internet haters) This album is basically one giant FUCK YOU to everyone that doubted the band, and that reason alone makes it my favorite....also all the songs are simply badass. Check out this under appreciated gem.

37.) Fates Warning- Parallels
Fates Warning, while pretty much starting Progressive Metal (well Maiden laid down the foundation, Fates Warning created it, Dream Theater Perfected it) Fates Warning is BY FAR the most under-appreciated band in Prog Metal. They have done so much for the genre the average music fan will never understand (well maybe when the Metal Evolution documentary airs their Prog Metal segment, even that I doubt). Ray Adler, even today is of of my favorite singers of all time. THe music on this album always grabbed my attention the most. and We Only Say Goodbye is the first real FW song I ever heard. I instantly fell in love. And others like Life in Still Water and Eye To eye, just perfected it to me. I'm very happy to hear that there will be a new FW album out this year. It is much needed to show how Progressive Metal is down without musical wankery.

36.) Faith No More- Angel Dust
How do you follow up being a one mainstream hit wonder? By doing some Angel Dust! haha. Actually Epic is probably my least favorite FNM song for that reason. Angel Dust is by far their best album because of the variety and songwriting. It's perfection in every sense of the word. Yet every song is catchy and abstract at the same time. Not many people outside the likes of Zappa, Devin Townsend, and Mike Patton can pull that off. From death Metal like smilelobber to the cheerleader driven Be Aggressive, to my favorite under appreciated song, Kindergarten. This album is the equivalent to a Commercial Mindfuck, in the best way possible. If you only know Faith No More because of Epic, learn what Faith No More was really about, with Angel Dust.

A Pleasant Shade Of Gray is a great album, but not a recommended first album. Perfect Symmetry or Parallels are the best introduction albums.

35.) Goo Goo Dolls- Dizzy Up The Girl
WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS DOING ON THIS LIST??????! Well it's one of the best Alternative Rock albums ever made. I do have a soft spot for Alternative Radio Pop Rock and this album is the highest ranked on that idea. It's catchy it's beautiful, and it gives you a good sense that you can write Pop rock and not suck. too bad that's rarely if ever seen again passed this album by the Goo Goo Dolls, or other Pop Rock bands in general. But this album....PERFECTION! In every sense of the word. Take a break from the Prog and Metal, and enjoy this album for the pure fact that, you can write great memorable songs without distortion....yes it can happen.

Parallels is porbably in my top 25 albums of all time, it's simply perfect. Quite like the Goo Goo Dolls too, and Faith No More are amazing. This list is awesome.

34.) Textures- Drawing Circles
Textures is the first band that made an impact on the Progressive Metal scene before the term Djent became popular (sorry Bulb....Textures used Meshuggah as an influence before you, but I'll get back to you later) This combined exactly what I consider the Djent term to be....Meshuggah with Melody. Drawing Circles is the kind of album that can be crushing, yet beautiful. Every song has it's moments of badass-ery. The song, Denying Gravity had the biggest influence on me and the way I look at Metal music today. Heavy yet beautiful. Also this album came out years before this type of seen got so overly used by bands that wanna be technical, yet wanna sound just like each other. And I say that as a fan of that genre of Progressive Metal, but anyone can admit, it's become too trendy and overused by now in 2012. Check out Drawing Circles to hear one of the finest heavy Progressive Metal albums done in the way it should be.

33.) Strapping Young Lad- Alien
The album that started my now 8 year infatuation with the greatest musician alive, Devin Townsend. Although I gotta admit, besides the song Love? sat first, I didn't get this album at all. It was too fucked up for my tastes as an early prog fan. I had just got into prog 2 years before this album. So this took me by total surprise. It took me a total month before I really truly appreciated the almighty Hevy Devy, but it I haven't stopped since. This album is nothing short of a fucked up Masterpiece. some of the greatest lyrics ever written mixed with some of the most brutal riffs ever written, with all of Dev quirky little phrasings and fun. with the exception of the last song Info Dump (an 11 minute song of feedback and synth sounds, which I will admit I deleted off my iTunes) I love every single song on this album. While I will always prefer Dev's solo work, SYL will always hold a special place in my heart. And I thank that entirely to Alien.

32.) Pain Of Salvation- Remedy Lane
The other album that made me into a crying, blubbering bitch. When I heard this concept album for the first time, it was a week after my first girlfriend cheated on me....and guess what this album is about? Actually almost everything that happened in this album has either happened to me in my situation, or one of my best friend's growing up and his relationship when we were growing up. But besides the lyrics and concept, the music on this album is Pain Of Salvation at their absolute best. Some say Be is better, or The Perfect Element, but Remedy Lane hit home with me more then anything else. Progressive Metal with a concept that anyone who has ever been in a relationship can fully understand and appreciate. If you need an album to grab you in a way you haven't felt before in Prog, this album is for you, but don't divulge into it if you are at the tail end of a broken relationship like I did, appreciate it when you are in a good state of mind.

31.) Periphery- Periphery
My other "Djent" album on this list. While Textures did it first and did it in the most perfect way. Periphery added something more to it that Textures didn't, more catchy to not just Prog fans. That's why Periphery is one of the biggest and I hate saying this...."Trendy" bands going right now. Many people have a problem with Periphery for that reason alone, because they are popular, which is just a shitty reason to not like a band. I liked these guys well before they became popular, and not because it was a hipster thing to do, its because I love the music and yes....the vocals as well. There is some high pitch poppy vocals on this album along with screams. It works for me in a big way. (The albums that I've mentioned already that don't fit in should explain that about me quite well.) And a lot of bands are going to keep ripping off this Djent sound until at least the beginning of 2013, I will only pay attention to the bands that actually showcase some originality to it, and since Periphery did it first, and even they are moving away from it to an extent. I will be looking forward to their next album coming out this year. Until then check this out for some very catchy, almost somewhat Poppy, Progressive Metal.

30. Frank Zappa- Hot Rats
Mr. Frank Zappa. In reality almost any Frank Zappa album could be at this spot. But I'm going with my first Zappa album that I fully understood, appreciated, and loved from beginning. Hot Rats. Hot Rats is a nearly all instrumental album (with exception of Captain Beefheart's vocals on Willie The Pimp) This showcases spectacular songwriting and musicianship from Zappa himself. He is nothing short of a musical legend that more people to check out and appreciate. He wrote a song in every style of music that was created before 1993 (besides Metal). And did it all with no care in the world if people got it or not. Hot Rats is no exception, just stellar music that is fun to listen to and mindblowing at the same time. To really understand what Prog is about....I mean REALLY understand the term PROGRESSIVE, you gotta understand Zappa to as far as a person actually can understand him. Hot Rats is a great place to start. (as well as Apostrophe)

Chuck is one of the most creative, influential, and greatest musicians the WORLD will ever know. Not just metal. This album is the last album Death ever put out, and Chuck didn't even want to make this album. He was getting much more into Prog then he was actual Death Metal and wanted to continue on with Control Denied, a band where he only guitar, not even sung at all. TO get out of his contract, he made The Sound Of Perseverance. I don't even think Chuck knew what he was about to unleash on the world with this album. While many say Symbolic was a better album, and I might even tend to agree at time. TSOP had much more of an impact me. The music, the lyrics, The killer cover of Painkiller, and the legendary drumming of Richard Christy. Christy is one of my biggest inspirations in music (And not his last time on this list). All you need to do is hear the intro to this album, Scavenger Of Human Sorrow to understand. That is still one of the craziest drum intros into any album! I miss Chuck so much but at least he gave us well over a decade of some of the best metal and music ever created. For any Prog/Tech Metal fan, Start with The Sound Of Perseverance...then go directly into Symbolic!

28.) Mastodon- Crack The Skye
I have come to a conclusion ever since the release of The Hunter a few months back. Anyone who is a Prog fan regards Crack The Skye as their best album, anyone who hates Prog thinks this, and The Hunter are their worst albums.....obviously with me being here I am a Prog Fan. Crack The Skye is by far their best album, with The Hunter taking second place. Not to disregard their Proggy Sludge Metal roots, but come on. Crack The Skye is the definition of Epic Metal. It has a concept that no one can fully explain, 7 songs, catchy, heavy, thought provoking, and only the title track has any kind of screaming (Scott Kelly of Neurosis provides those screams). Mastodon took a big risk making this album, and If I do say so myself, it was the best decision they ever made to this point. Hell they are going to be touring with Opeth and Ghost later in the year (look for information on that soon.) If you can only think of Mastodon as a Sludgy Metal band, and are a prog fan, do yourself a favor and give this album the chance it deserves. You won't be a disappointed.

I really enjoy Zappa although I'll admit I don't have any of his albums on my list. He was absolutely musically gifted and talented and he certainly didn't bow to any pressure to create music on anyone's terms but his own.

27.) Clutch- Pure Rock Fury
What was said about Crack The Skye can almost be said about Pure Rock Fury, until Strange Cousins From The West came out, a lot of Clutch fans say Pure Rock Fury is their weakest album. While it may not be the best album, it is by far my favorite, because the name is actually what the album give you....PURE ROCK FURY. It combines the best 60-70's Psychedelic Rock, with 90's Rock's catchyness. Before From Beale St. To Oblivion and the song Electric Worry rocketed them to a 3 week success. Careful With That Mic was their biggest song, and still gets some radio airplay from time to time. But it's the other songs that really makes this one perfection, like Pure Rock Fury, Immortal, Drink To The Dead, etc. It's quite a change in their sound from what they did up at the point (a lot of DC Hardcore influence on their previous albums). This and The Elephant Riders really mark their change to their bluesy roots they still do to this day. But there is no denying the catchyness in this album. It's as if Zappa made an album with Clutch. Check this out, it's well worth your time.

26.) Woods Of Ypres- Woods V: Grey Skies & Electric Light
Is it a bit premature to say that this 2012 release is in my top 50 favorites, especially considering that this album just came out in January? Possibly, but I don't think it's going to change. Woods Of Ypres is what I consider to be a heavier, Canadian version of Type O Negative, except heavier and better. Woods Of Ypres frontman and creative Mastermind David Gold, was tragically killed in a car accident on December 21st. 2011. And this album was just about to be released. These guys played in Minnesota mid 2011, and I couldn't regret more not being able to see them. Since receiving the Promo for this album (gotta love radio I tell you what) I've played this album about 3 times a day, and that won't be stopping for a while. The music is too damn good to ignore, and the lyrics are now, looking back on what happened to David Gold, is just chilling. The last two tracks are apart of a song called, Kiss My Ashes Goodbye, it's almost as if he predicted his own demise in an eerie way. It's such a chilling but incredible album. If you want a darker, but folky and catchy Metal album with almost all clean vocals. Check out Woods Of Ypres. and once this becomes available, get this album ASAP!

25.) Scale The Summit- The Collective
I'll say this now, knowing many will not agree. But this is the best instrumental album I have ever heard. And I say that as an Instrumental music lover since Junior High when I first heard the song....actually I'll get into that later down the road. But yes, Scale The Summit made a masterpiece with The Collective. Taking an almost 180 turn, from the bright and major keys of Carving Desert Canyons and Monuments, to a dark Minor Key and overall BETTER sound with The Collective. 45 minutes of pure instrumental heaven (Perfect for trips to and from band practice) They get very heavy with songs like Origin Of Species, epic with Whales and one of the best endings ever with Drifting Figures. The last riff of Origin Of Species is one of my top 5 favorite riffs ever created. It's pure Prog goodness, very Dream Theater-esque done by Scale The Summit. Having gotten to hang out with Christ Letchford twice in 2011, I know that the rest of the guys are just as cool as he is, and know their shit when it comes to music. And that's what I really appreciate in music no matter what genre. For the best 45 minute instrumental album you will ever heard. listen to The Collective. It changed my life for the better, and it hasn't even been a year since it came out.

24.) Sum 41- Chuck
Another album that I know no one would have guessed I'd consider to be a top 50 album, let alone top 25! I hadn't been a fan of these guys before this time outside a couple songs, and after this album, in my humble opinion began to really suck. But Chuck....DAMN! What a great Pop Rock/Metal album. I'm a sucker for a band who knows how to be heavy and when to be poppy and catchy without intentionally doing it to make a quick buck. All these songs came from the heart and you can hear it in their playing. It constantly changes from going Metal to being very heartfelt in a great mixture and roller coaster of music. That can't often be said from a mainstream band. Even when putting this list together I listened all the way though a few times and remembered everything I loved about this album, and none of that has changed since I bought it. Again to venture outside the box and looking to get a mainstream album that doesn't suck...get Chuck!

23.) Fair To Midland- Tales From A MayFly: What I Tell You Three Times Is True
Fair To Midland, one of the best bands that the mainstream only knows for writing a song about Manatees. These guys get nowhere near the amount of respect they deserve, especially for as much touring as they do. It's got everything a real Music fan looks for. Heavy, Catchy Hooks, Memorable Melodies and Harmonies, It's nowhere near standard. And damn it, it's a Prog Rock album! Every song is just as catchy as the one played before it. There is no weak track at all on this album. While Dance Of The Manatee is by far their biggest song, it's not even close to the best song on the album. TO love these guys, you gotta hear this album, to make them one of your favorite bands of all time, go see them live. BEST LIVE SHOW!!!! But start with Tales From A Mayfly, then immediately check out Arrows And Anchors. I don't know what to say if you can't dig these guys after giving them a fair chance.

As much as I love Emperor, you just can't fuck with Ihsahn's solo work. All 3 solo albums to date beat Emperor's Black Metal sound, with his brand of Progressive Death Metal. After is the best of all 3 album without any doubt. Also the inclusion of Jørgen Munkeby (Frontman of Shining) on saxophone is one of the best things to ever do with this album. The saxophone adds so much more power and emotion it would have without it. There isn't a song on here that I could consider weak in any way. All serve their purpose on this triumph of an album. For any Prog fan of any kid. Check this out immediately! It is some of the best music 2012 ever produced.

The AC/DC of Viking Metal. I do mean that in a good way of course. Amon Amarth is Epic, Brutal and oddly catchy. And of course, it must be said....they only have one sound, fast and Ballad *Same can be said of Power Metal, haha* This album was my introduction into Amon Amarth and it was the right choice. This album and the band in general, really is Power Metal with Death Growls, to be completely fair. But that's why I love it. Its not so much original and crafty and all loving, as it is, the music when you just want something fucking heavy and headbang to. This album covers that so very well. When you want to pillage a village, or just drink some brew with vodka and the blood of your enemies, get this album *also, like AC/DC, once you've heard this album, you've pretty much heard all of Amon Amarth, so just stick with the best...this album*

20.) Agalloch- Marrow Of The Spirit
It's not too often when a band like Agalloch can completely take over a guy's life after just one listen. That's what happened with Marrow Of The Spirit. I had only heard of Agalloch before this album came out and I gotta say, they have blown me away. Folk Metal, Black Metal, Post Rock, a tad bit of Prog. There is so much going on with this band the average person may not be able to grasp everything after only one listen. But if you take the time, it is all so very worth it. It's beautiful in every sense of the word. All while having a dark evil, spiritual, and of course, nature influence all over. This album is for the adventurous types who want to hear something they have never heard before. Although many have taken their style, particularly in the Atmospheric Black Metal route. But Agalloch was the pioneers of their scene. Their latest album is a great place to find out how it all began.

19.) Devin Townsend- Deconstruction
I know a lot of people will be wondering why this is only at number 19 after how much I talk about this album. Well, there's 18 other albums that had a bigger impact on me. But Deconstruction. HOLY FUCK!!! It is an absolute mindfuck and trying to understand it all after only a couple listens is impossible. That's the beauty of it. This is Devin's finest Metal album, without any question, it literally has everything you would want from Hevy Devy, being Hevy Devy. Some incredible guest spots as well on every track except Poltergeist. The underlying message of Deconstruction is such a great story. Don't forget who you are, and try to make yourself better.....with tons of poop jokes and Ziltoid controlling a carnival. While I'll always be more of a fan of Dev's Prog route. Deconstruction proves you can be metal as fuck, and write one of the best albums to ever be released. I've let him know that a few times now.

18.) Evergrey- Recreation Day
Evergrey is one of the first bands that I discovered in Metal that could be heavy and not use screams/Growls. All Clean vocals. As poser-ish as it sounds. I discovered Evergrey and this album, Recreation Day, from Headbanger's Ball on MTV2 and instantly fell in love. I bought Recreation Day the Tuesday it came out and haven't looked back since. It's not even so much the music that is the best aspect of this album (Although the music is fucking awesome) it is more so the concept behind the album. The first half of the album leaves you depressed and alone with no hope, but half way through on, it gives you hope that things will be ok in life. Tom Englund has been an unspoken hero of mine since that night watching Headbanger's Ball that night. And back in September I finally got to meet him, and he gave me my first station ID for my radio show. Now that is fucking awesome! Evergrey has put out some of the best albums in Progressive Power Metal, and some that were just...ok. But Recreation Day, it is their finest work to date.

Some good stuff, but a lot that I wouldn't put near my top 100, let alone 50. That's ok young padewan, I have many years on you. I often times find myself not agreeing with your song selections. You just can't NOT mention Gods of War Arise. It's the most unintentionally funny song I ever heard, and I mean that in a good way :lol Maybe you need to have my sick sense of humor.
I also disagree with song selections from Alien and Marrow of the Spirit, but those are both beasts of albums, with Marrow being my album of the year last year.

17.) Porcupine Tree- Fear Of A Blank Planet
To this day I feel this is one of the most underrated PT albums. Which is odd to say because this is the album most Prog fans of the time discovered Porcupine Tree. I never hear anyone say this is an ok album. It's either amazing and bland. I happen to think it's their most amazing. While it doesn't have all their best songs (That would be In Absentia) FOABP hit more at home with my lyrically and musically. It's a very dark album all around, no real brightness in the music at all. But that in and of itself makes the beauty out of it. Songs like the title track, My Ashes, and Way Out Of here stand out the most to me. Anesthetize, while it's a great song, drags a little too long, but the middle section makes up for all of that. I highly recommend this and In Absentia as PT's best work and you can't go wrong starting with either album. Porcupine Tree is One Of The Best bands around. Listen why.

Some good stuff, but a lot that I wouldn't put near my top 100, let alone 50. That's ok young padewan, I have many years on you. I often times find myself not agreeing with your song selections. You just can't NOT mention Gods of War Arise. It's the most unintentionally funny song I ever heard, and I mean that in a good way :lol Maybe you need to have my sick sense of humor.
I also disagree with song selections from Alien and Marrow of the Spirit, but those are both beasts of albums, with Marrow being my album of the year last year.

16.) Between The Buried And Me- Colors
How can you be a Prog Metal fan and not have Colors in your Top 50? Adult Contemporary Progressive Death Metal. And yes Colors is all one song, separated into tracks. (I think a lot of people forget about that.) I can't listen to this album unless it's all the way through. BTBAM have only gotten proggier over the years and it's honestly for the best. It's only gotten them bigger and better. Colors is their finest moment. Not to say anything past that isn't awesome as well, but Colors was the first album to really, and I mean, REALLY explore their prog roots and make it their own. While of course there is plenty of the Death Growls and Screams on this album, the clean breaks, the phenomenal musicianship, the genre changes and the overall landscape of music provided is unfuckable. BTBAM is one of those bands that now what they are doing, and made some huge chances, and it's worked in their favor. For the best Adult Contemporary Progressive Death metal album made to date. check out Colors!

15.) Iced Earth- Horror Show
This was the biggest problem I had in this list....Horror Show or Burnt Offerings. I bought both albums at the same time. Both feature one of my favorite singers of all time, Matt Barlow, and both had a huge affect on how I look at Metal today. But ultimately I went with Horror show, because it again features one of the drummers that made me who I am today...Richard Christy. Horror Show is a loosely based concept album about all the famous monsters in fiction. Dracula, Frankenstein, The Wolfman, The Mummy, etc. And the music behind it is just awesome. Jon Schaffer is one of the most famous leaders of a band that is either looked at as a musical hero, or hated for sounding too similar on every song. My opinion? There's nothing wrong with having a similar style to your other songs, not every band has to be completely progressive, just good music. That's what Iced Earth is. They write kick ass Metal that's in your face and completely badass in every way That's what Horror Show is all about. Great songs, great stories, and overall just awesome music.

14.) James LaBrie- Static Impulse
James LaBrie's best Non-Dream Theater project to date. This is another album that no one think is "Meh...it's alright.". People either love it or hate it almost entirely because of Peter Wildoer's scream vocals. I happen to love his screams completely. Jame's clean vocals wouldn't always fit where the screams are. It's hard to make Metal like that and make the cleans work without sounding like complete cheese. And James loves this style of music as well, so I don't see a problem. This album is a perfect mixture of Dream Theater and Soilwork. A combination of music I was waiting for, for a very long time. Not every song is in this style though. Songs like Euphoric and Coming Home are beautiful ballads, Euphoric especially. The next JLB album is going to be in this style, with the help of Peter Wichers of Soilwork helping write the songs. That only means that it's going to be better then ever. Until then Static Impulse. The Perfect Progressive Metal album with some screams.

13.) Daniel Jakubovic- Elef Kirot (Thousand Walls)
As you can tell if you've been really paying attention to my list is that I love me some good Pop Rock. And what happens when you mix it with Progressive Metal featuring one of the best multi-instrumentalists in the world today? You get Elef Kirot. Daniel Jakubovic is not a name instantly known by hearing it but you may know him from his work with Jordan Rudess in the past on his previous solo albums and live projects with Jordan. But outside of a couple solo spots, and some strings, Daniel plays EVERYTHING on this album. as you can see from the music videos he has released. the songs are so well crafted. Even the more Progressive Metal songs are just as catchy as any Pop song. The instrumentation, the music....DAMN! This is the only album that I can fully enjoy, where I don't understand one word that is being said. The whole album is sung in Hebrew (All of his other bands are English lyrics) but that doesn't even matter. I sing a long just like I understand every word. There's nothing like an album that can be so well crafted yet poppy and catchy at the same time, it's almost impossible to accomplish...until 2011 when this album was released. Please check out this Pop Rock/Prog Metal Masterpiece now! It's available to stream on his bandcamp page as I speak.

12.) Devin Townsend- Accelerated Evolution
Yup, this is the one artist that I had to put one album of. For me it's impossible not to. One other artist I should have put another album or 2 of, but if I had to do that, I would of had to for every other band on here, which would create a bunch a problems, so I just went this route. Anyways, back to this album. AE is THE POP METAL ALBUM. It hits home to me on every level on every song. It's very rare to find an album that can be as poppy as it is metal as it is perfection. Only Daniel Jakubovic has been able to that in my eyes up to this point. Whether it is a song like Storm, or Deadhead or Sunday Afternoon or Slow Me Down. Every song is just as good as the next. And it's one of the first Devin Albums that I could all the way though and be able to play on drums all the way through. Dev has never failed on any album he has been a part of that (I don't just say that because I'm a mark for anything Dev does, although I am) I say that because it's almost impossible to dispute. The only way you can is if you can't appreciate his style of music., And if you are a real fan of music, you can appreciate at least something he has done in the past. This is the best album (besides Addicted!) to get into Devin Townsend. Get this album if you haven't already and enjoy the Hevy Devy goodness!

11.) 3- The Ghost You Gave To Me
Joey Eppard and Co. are at the top of their game right now. The Ghost You Gave To Me is the perfect accumulation of everything 3 has done in the past, and make it into such a great Progressive Rock/Progressive Metal album. The songs can be heavy, then poppy, then technical as fuck, and all while being able to capture your interest and never let go. Everyone in 3 are masters of their instruments. While Joey Eppard, of course, gets the most exposure (and it's truly deserving), Billy, Gartdrumm, and Daniel are all fucking amazing at what they play and deserve the same amount of love that Joey does. Also on this album, 3 wrote their best masterpiece, Only Child. The 7 minute epic that showcases what 3 is all about in one song. The only complaint I can give about this album is that I can't play it enough. 3 deserves to be at Dream Theater style praise and luxury, and I'll do anything I can to help with that, even if it is just being able to play them on my show. I love you guys. Please, please, please, check this album out and love it as much as I do. It's so well deserved.

10.) King's X- Ogre Tones
King's X influenced me in a way that almost no other band could. Musically, lyrically, emotionally, in every way. Ogre Tones was the first KX album I ever bought. I bought it under sad circumstances when the music store, Sam Goody was closing up shop all across the nation and you were album to buy brand new CDs for $2.99 each. I bought about 20 albums that day and this was one of them, and the one that stuck out the most. To this day I know and sing along with every word of this album. The songs are heavy and powerful, all while being poppy and catchy. Although sadly I have yet to hear a song live from this album, King's X is one of the best live bands going today. If they come near you, I HIGHLY advise going. While I do feel this is one of their most underrated albums, I hold it in the highest regard. Any fan who started around this era should feel the same. Even if you have this album already, spin it again. It deserves it so much. And if you have yet to hear it, you are in for some Ear Candy (No Pun Intended...actually yes, Pun Intended)

9.) Cynic- Traced In Air
You saw Death and Atheist in this already, you know I had to add the other of the big 3 in 90s Tech Death Metal. But Cynic did something that Death and Atheist didn't do (or have the chance to anyways), go full on Prog. This direction really began over a decade after their first release Focus, with their 2nd release, Traced In Air. While many of the Death Metal elements are still present (mainly the screams) Cynic turned into a full on Prog Metal band and I couldn't be happier about it. Yes I am a newer fan of Cynic, I didn't even know about them until 2005. But the second this album kicks in, it blew me away. Technical without being wanky. Beautiful without being emo. And just all out Progressive Metal perfection. Paul Masvidal and Sean Reinert can do absolutely no wrong. And they've proven that with the 2 EPs that have followed this release. and their upcoming 2012 album. Cynic is one of the most peaceful Metal bands the world will ever know. It transcends above almost anything out there. While it is a shorter album, I wouldn't want it any other way. PLAY THIS NOW!

8.) Alice In Chains- Dirt
Debate me all you want...this is the best Rock album ever made. I hate most radio rock and what it has become, but back in 92, this album proved that Rock wasn't dead yet. Every song came straight from the heart. A very dark, heroin influenced heart, but be that as it may, it made this classic album what it is. You can't write this album with a sober mind unless you are deranged more then heroin could make you be. As someone who uses caffeine as a drug, this album, I can only look at this from the outside, and it's scary and hauntingly beautiful. It has a real ethereal feel from beginning to end. All while at the time having a modern Hard Rock feel through out. There is no reason why Alice In Chains should be labeled as a grunge band, they sound nothing like Nirvana, Mudhoney or Pearl Jam. They are a fucking Hard Rock Band, and always be one. This is the 2nd best album to come out in 1992 (the other is coming up soon), but this album is pure Dark perfection made in Radio rock form. have a listen and enjoy it.

7.) Torche- Meanderthal
One album I'm sure most people wouldn't have expected on here (or even know of the band for that matter.) Torche is the definition of a variety Metal band. This album is exactly that, a variety Metal album. While it is layered in Stoner/Sludge Metal, it has so many elements of Prog, Pop, Doom, Thrash,m and Punk. No 2 songs sound the same from Torche...ever! This is the album that suckered me in. Oddly enough I first saw these guys open for Dredg back in April 2009 (what an odd combination eh?) But they made the show so damn good. Torche is slowly really starting to get their fanbase going, now landing the main support slow for Corrosion of Conformity this year. I will be there to see them. They've only gotten poppier and catchier from this album. But this album in particular showcases that so many styles in one album, can't be a bad thing.

6.) Opeth- Blackwater Park
The best Progressive Death metal band around. While that is another controversial statement. name another band that has added Progressive Metal with elements of Death Metal and have become and big and best as Opeth has? *Waiting several answers here after this post* Regardless. Opeth is the reason I got into Screams and Growls. I bought Opeth's Deliverance and Dream Theater's Train Of Thought the same day at Wal-Mart while I was in Junior High. DT lead me to the greatness that is Prog, and I instantly hated Opeth and regretted buying that album outside the song, A Fair Judgement. 6 months later I came back to Deliverance and gave it another chance, and fell in love. I bought Blackwater Park 2 weeks later and been a real Opeth fan ever since. When I was growing up I never could imagine I'd love a band with screams and Growls because I couldn't understand a word being said and thought it didn't match and all the other reasons that made me realize I was ignoring some of the best music out there, simply because of the vocals. To this day since I got into Deliverance I never stopped enjoying a band simply for the vocals. Opeth is to thank for me being able to become an overall music fan. Blackwater Park is their highest point in my regard to them. The music and the quality of the production provided by Mr. Steven Wilson. songs like Bleak, Harvest, and the title track made this a legendary Prog Metal album. Many will hate it because of the vocals, many will consider Opeth to be the only Metal band they like with screams and growls, and others, like me, for appreciate this for what it is. one of the finest Metal albums to date. The only way to understand is to listen for yourself.

5.) Alcest- Les Voyages de l'Âme
Another album that seems way too premature to be this high up after such a short release? again...maybe. But in reality, not at all. This album is the best of the two best albums without the fluff. It's as beautiful as Souvenirs d'un autre monde, and as hard hitting as Écailles de Lune without any of the stuff that drags down either album (and I say that loving every Alcest album from start to finish). A lot of people will disagree with me because they didn't become Alcest fans until 2009 when Écailles de Lune came out, but I became a fan in 2008 so I can look at Écailles de Lune with an outside perspective unlike most new fans now do. Les Voyages de l'Âme is as beautiful as it is heavy. Post Rock and Shoegaze with the occasional Atmospheric Black Metal. Many new bands are taking this style and trying to make their own, and some are doing it great, others...are not. But Alcest is an original and always will be. Anything mastermind, Neige, does is perfection He's yet to let me down in anything he has released. Les Voyages de l'Âme is by far the best example of what Neige is capable of, and I recommend this to any real music fan. It's too good to pass up.

4.) Long Distance Calling- Avoid The Light
Progressive Post Metal...this is the double dip cream dream of a lifetime album for me. If Dream Theater was more atmospheric. If Explosions In The Sky went Prog Metal and kept being not boring (sorry EITS fans). Long Distance made a HUGE breakthrough with Avoid The Light. It's all I've been looking for in an album and so much more. I would call this the best instrumental album ever made, with the exception that it's only 5/6th instrumental. Their best song is The Nearing Grave (The song of 2009 in my humble opinion) featuring Jonas of Katatonia on vocals. This song is so damn hauntingly beautiful. Jonas should join these guys full time (hell it might even help them get a tour in the USA at some point, we can only hope) Avoid the light is the album where you want to relax and be prog at the same time. Not so much in a Fates Warning way, but in a. Beautiful music doesn't always need to be in 4/4 way. GET ON THIS!!!

3.) dredg- El Cielo
dredg is my favorite non-metal band of all time. Discovering them in 2006 changed my life at the time. Music can be not metal and awesome (something that at my age I had to relearn) Catch Without Arms was my first dredg album. El Cielo quickly followed. It's nothing short of a complete masterpiece. It is a concept album (often connected to Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind) about sleep paralysis (that moment when you are partially awake but partially asleep but can't move). This album goes through many different style changes and movements from Jazz to Hard Rock to the epic moment of the entire album, The Canyon Behind Her. dredg is one of the best bands going that is getting nowhere near the recognition they honestly truly deserve (they had to open for Circa Survive for Christ's sake). But if they forever stay an undeground cult band. That is totally cool with me, because only true fans of this style of music should be fans. The ones that honestly care about the band. Another controversial statement. dredg made a bad album (including Chuckles). But El Cielo is their best album to date. if you need a musical adventure through the best of Progressive ROCK, indulge yourself in this masterpiece.

2.) Dream Theater- Images And Words
Like you read in the Blackwater Park review (if you did read it) My prog obsession began with DT's Train Of Thought and Opeth's Deliverance. The second I hear the beginning of As I am, I was hooked. A couple weeks later. My middle School/High school band made a band trip to NYC and one of the two buses we took broke down. So we made a stop in New Jersey to a local mall and I bought Images And Words because I heard it was their biggest album. This Album was my soundtrack to NYC. Honestly at first Another Day scared me because of the Saxophone (I think it scares any metal fan at first who hadn't heard of Shining before that point.) Of course I grew to love it just as every other song on the album. Nothing beats hearing Metropolis on a touring bus in the middle of Manhattan on a Friday night. Images And Words is very much ahead of it's time, although it does have the late 80's early 90's Production written all over it (especially the snare compression). None of that takes away from the beautiful song writing, crushing riffs, and just overall Prog Metal that I now know and love. Dream Theater since that trip to NYC has been and always will be my favorite band of all time. Nothing will ever take that away. Sure one other album is ahead of I&W and it's not Dream Theater. Regardless. I've been a Dream Theater fan longer and has had the biggest impact on my life to date as a whole band. I owe them everything I have in music. My drumming, my radio show, my compassion for all music, everything. And despite everything that has happened since the break up with Mike Portnoy. I still love both sides for different reasons. Mike is still my favorite drummer of all time, Dream Theater is my favorite band. I wish the best for both sides. They both happy right now and Mike if you do read this (You just might) I thank you most of all. I met you in 2008 and after that point it made me appreciate my main influences all the more. I can't thank you enough.....So.....HOW ABOUT A RADIO INTERVIEW SOMETIME??? :metal :metal :metal

I bought this album along with Accelerated Evolution the same day. While my high school Jazz band was playing a Christmas show about 75 miles away in Eau Claire, WI at a local mall. a tradition that still happens there. They have (or had I have no clue if they still do or not) a FYE there where I did all my metal shopping when I was in the area. and I was just getting into SYL when I was told "Dude, you gotta get into his solo stuff. Once you do, you'll never look back." Holy Fuck he was right. I never looked back. I first popped in AE and played that for weeks because I didn't think Devin could get any better, I didn't even bother with Terria. Then I popped Terria in after forgetting I bought it, and it didn't click with me. Why the fuck is he singing about Olives? Earth Day? (Although my hometown Clear Lake, Wisconsin, is home to the creator of Earth Day, Gaylord A. Nelson) I don't get it. So like Opeth before him, Devin's Terria did nothing for me, until about 5-6 listens later then a bomb went off. It all made sense.......it doesn't make sense! It's just beautiful music created in a sometime quirky way, other times in a real passionate way, and others music just meant to be music. That's when things hit me like a ton of bricks. You don't write a style of music to be Metal, or to be col, or anything like that. You write music you want to play because you want to play it. That's what Terria is. 72 minutes of beautiful Passionate music. The greatest ballads like Stagnant, Nobody's Here, and Canada. Powerful songs like Earth Day and Mountain and just overall a real sense of Fuck it....just relax and enjoy music for what it is music. because Devin says it best in Earth Day. And Music......
WELL, IT'S JUST ENTERTAINMENT FOLKS!

Well there you go my top 50 albums of all time. Some are universally agreed upon. Others you can't understand why they are there, others you can't understand why any of these albums would be there, while others think it's one of the best overall lists they've seen in a long time.

One of the things that makes Dev so damn cool. He certainly writes and plays what he feels without any restrictions. This is also a similar motto of mine with listening to music which is likely why I'm generally all over the place with my musical interests (although I obviously don't like every thing or in particular every genre) I'm not one to look down on anyone else for their likes.
Really cool list and I enjoyed reading how you found the music or how you came to relate with the albums. :tup

That's when things hit me like a ton of bricks. You don't write a style of music to be Metal, or to be col, or anything like that. You write music you want to play because you want to play it.
One of the things that makes Dev so damn cool. He certainly writes and plays what he feels without any restrictions. This is also a similar motto of mine with listening to music which is likely why I'm generally all over the place with my musical interests (although I obviously don't like every thing or in particular every genre) I'm not one to look down on anyone else for their likes.

Great list, enjoyed it. I want to add a second mention to Ogre Tones. I'm not a huge Kings X freak but I love this album, great songs all the way through, reccomended.

No I totally get why people have been berating me about that so far, not just on here, but everywhere else I posted this list. I totally understand but I'll say the same thing I said to them. I've been waiting since 2008 for Alcest to make this kind of album, and they finally did.

I didn't discover Alcest this year. I've been a fan since 2008 and I bought their first album and their first EP, Le Secret. I love both albums released but they both have their flaws that make them drag on. The new album does not have that in my opinion.

There is no bad Alcest album. It's impossible, but the new album is pure, unadulterated perfection.

just read through this whole thread. cool picks; some stuff i already love and some stuff to check out (i've never even heard of woods of ypres).
i was a 'huge' fates warning fan between 03-07 (and have been back in the mood recently with arch/matheos drawing me in)...the stuff i know, i've spun hundreds of times, but for some reason i never explored the entire catalogue. parallels is one of those unexplored albums...i did acquire it recently (along with no exit and inside out, both of which also havent been explored), but i've been checking out so much stuff, i haven't gotten around to spinning it. perhaps its time.
oh, and at times i can be a bit of a prog snob, but i actually love the hunter (dat fun!) and can, at times, as much as despise crack the skye.
though i'm never not in the mood for the last baron.
