My last.fm only covers the last two years, so it won't have a lot of stuff that I'd veto.  I'd also ignore the numbers because it once took all my scrobbles and multiplied them.  https://www.last.fm/user/mrouser (https://www.last.fm/user/mrouser)

I'll probably start asking for submissions to start rolling in Friday, but don't send anything until I say to.

I meant to say everyone BUT Iarwain.

You're in.

I'm wondering if I should make it  my mission to be the first kicked out.

Multiple people will be eliminated in the first two rounds.  The first round will take a while, the second not so much, and then they will go progressively faster.  Also, I won't be doing write-ups for the first two rounds, so that will make my job much easier.

so..the round will have a theme...we submit....if you like we advance if not we're out?
pretty much sums it up?
Title: Re: DTVT's Musical Russian Roulette - EVERYONE can play!
Post by: Dr. DTVT on January 03, 2012, 11:43:32 AM
I'm going to post detailed rules later today, but the basic formula is:

Round 1: Top two advance to round 3, half of the remaining field is out.
Round 2: Top 4 advance, rest of field is out
Round 3+: Russian roulette.  One person is eliminated each round.

There will be more to it than that, but that is the basic jist.  There will be a significant strategy element starting in round 3 that hopefully will make things more fun.  First two rounds will be open so no one can complain that they would have advanced but they couldn't send such-and-such song.

Top 2 advance to round 3, half are eliminated...huh?

If there are 20 people participating, then the Top 2 ratings advance directly to round 3.  18 left, so 9 do not pass Go, and do not collect $200.

exactly.  If there is an odd number, I'll let the extra one pass.

Title: Re: DTVT's Musical Russian Roulette - EVERYONE can play!
Post by: Dr. DTVT on January 03, 2012, 05:01:12 PM
MAO!  MAO!!

I sent PM's to a handful of people I want in, so I guess I'll start with the rules.

Round 1: Open.  The top two entries advance to round 3, half of the remaining field is out.  If there is an odd number, one more will advance than is eliminated.

Round 2: Also open.  Top 4 from this round advance, rest of field is out.

Round 3 and beyond:  Russian Roulette rules apply.  Each player submits a song, and I will rank them and assigne a number of "bullets".  You don't want bullets, that's what kills you.  The player that won the round then chooses the order the gun gets passed around, but they aren't told how many bullets each player has.  The gun is then passed around in the order the round winner decides, with each player playing with the number of bullets they got that round, until one player is killed, and the next round begins with music submission.  Bullets from the previous round are removed, clean slates.  The gun will be a six-sided die.  Russian roulette rounds will either be recorded and broadcast on youtube, or more preferably, one person can watch live via facetime, so if you have an iPhone you may get to watch the blood splatter live whether you are in or not.  I'd prefer to do both though, with someone watching live for accountability purposes..  A roll equal to or less than the number of bullets in a player's chamber means that a live round was fired and the player is eliminated.

If that's not fun enough, there will be bonuses to be earned throughout the game.  I compiled a list of 10 bands I'd like to hear.  Submit one of those bands in any round and you earn a one-time one bullet reduction for you to use at your discretion.  In addition, there may be opportunities to earn bullet reductions by round themes.  The last round (with only two players) will go to the one who submits the best song/songs/album; I haven't decided on that, it will depend on how long the previous rounds take probably.

Now, to get people in the mood, here is a great movie clip:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jn0yH6i-9ys&feature=related (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jn0yH6i-9ys&feature=related)

Feel free to submit songs now.  Grooveshark/youtube preferred, but if you can't find it PM me and I'll give you my gmail account.  Round 1 submissions needed by Sunday.  Feel free to join if you haven't already.

What do I know/own music wise?  Here's my last.fm it's not completely accurate and only covers about the last two years but it's something.  You won't find much classic rock or 80s stuff on there.  I don't have them on CD, but I certainly don't need an introduction to the radio hits of Black Sabbath, Rainbow, Led Zepplin, The Who, Van Halen, Def Leopard, etc.  That's the music I grew up with.  To be less restrictive, I'm going to eliminate albums I own/know, and not entire artists.  To use a fake example: If I had for some reason I didn't have WDADU and I&W but had all the other DT albums, WDADU and I&W would be fair game still.

There is no penalty for submitting a song I wouldn't obviously reject, but if you send me "Iron Man" or something on my last.fm with several plays, I might just drop you.  One more note on my last.fm - for a period of time it was scrobbling songs from Nick's radio show so if you see a band with less than 5 plays, they're probably safe.

If two people send me the same song in these first two rounds, they will just be graded equally for the sake of time.

Yes, or by strip-o-gram.  Female strippers only please.

Basically send me a link to a song, in a private message, that I don't know, but I should like.  I'd like you to join, these roulettes need some new blood on occasion, and this is a great way to learn the ropes.

I prefer PM's but if you send me an e-mail make sure it's obvious who you are (ytserush - I'm looking at you)

Hopefully I can start listening tomorrow, but I will say that one person got one of the ten bands that awards a bullet reduction, assuming they get through the slaughter and into round 3.

We got a second bullet reduction band found as well.  I've listened to 17 so far, one of those is extremely safe, and another one is hovering on the current borderline.  Still have more to listen to, along with relistens, and hopefully a few more submissions.

Deadline is end of the day Sunday.

Results will be up Tuesday if I get some last minute songs.  For listening to 25+ songs at least 3 times each, I think the first round will be done pretty quickly.  I still got one or two more listens left on what I have.

edit: on a second thought tho.....  since this one is a Russian roulette ..... I'd set my heart on to find myself at death's door, my willing hand on its handle  :)

could you do us all a favor and take over Nick's roulette for him? You just need to judge everything harshly and make sure nobody wins. (kidding nick)

I'm going to have to badger Nick some more to join mine.  Really, for the most part I'm getting good stuff.  I'm liking some stuff that definately won't make it to round 2.  I have all 25 songs in ranked, and the difference between #2 and #19 isn't much.  There is one song that is a clear cut above IMO.  Definately going to require one more listen across the board, and probably a few more on the borderline songs.

Just to have a little more fun with this, I'm writing this as a short story, and I have the first chapter written, and can be quickly editted if Elite or someone else submits a song.  I like the death I have for the last person dead, but unfortunately it only works if they die, and I honestly would rather see this person advance because I can always kill them the same way in round 2 if they don't make it :)  Also I like this person's taste in music, so I don't want them to die yet.

Title: Re: DTVT's Musical Russian Roulette - The bloodbath begins!!
Post by: Dr. DTVT on January 08, 2012, 12:16:55 PM
From his private island, the evil mad scientist DTVT issues a challenge to the world of DTF.

"I demand more music for my collection.  Come forth brave adventures and glory and praise will be poured upon the head of the victor, and your name will be praised across the lands of DTF.  However, many of you will fail and die, as to reach me, you must first get past my Transatlantic Atomic Gatling Gun."

Undaunted, 29 brave adventurers took up arms and music to sate the evil mastermind.  One wretched soul, known as "The Nick", however rebuffed this challenge, and attempted to flee.  The brave adventurers of DTF would have none of this cowardice, and on the journey to DTVT's island cast him off in the Sea of the Banned, where such monsters known as the "Quadrochosis", "Two Point Tingle", "Wrath", "Nathanlol", and a being so horrific that even its name is unpronouceable, the "Zxlkho", were to feast upon The Nick.

Upon reaching land, the brave adventurers of DTF charged the island, while a maniacal DTVT rained hell fire down upon them with his Atomic Gatling Gun while listening to "The Whirlwind".  Shortly after landfall, the adventurer known as Ravenheart found a secret underground passage that leads to the tower.  Knowing that secret passages were safer than braving the Atomic Gatling Gun, Orcus116 quickly followed Ravenheart.

The remaining adventurers stormed the tower, and quickly Lateralus88, Antigoon, and Dethklok09 were dispatched in a rain of bullets so fierce that their corpses caught fire from the friction of the bullets ripping through their skin.  At this point lonestar attempted to use the smoldering corpses to cook bacon to calm the diabolical DTVT, but several consecutive headshots put and end to his plan.  Ariich tried his smarmy British charms and proclaimed, "You like The Dear Hunter, so you'll probably like this ba-" and was annihilated in a swarm of metal projectiles.  MK Ultra tried to use ariich as a human shield, but he was dispatched as the hellfire of bullets turned both of them into human swiss cheese.  Gorille85, The Voxyn, 73109, and Xanthul all tried to outflank the storm of bullets, but were mowed down in one wide sweep.  Elite fell into a Toxik trap and fared no better than this:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tjEdLuqK1RQ (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tjEdLuqK1RQ)   Kingshmegland tried to proclaim his sovereignty over DTVT's island, but that made him a standing target that was easily dispatched.  As the remaining adventurers approached the outer wall which provided shelter from the Atomic Gatling Gun, Jamesman decided to stop to post lols about the dead people, but didn't think to reach shelter before posting, and was picked off just outside of the inner range.

Results:
(bands with a * denote one of the ten bands I was hoping to get in this roulette and have earned a bullet reduction)

Gaining a pass to round 3:

Ravenheart:  Dan Swano - Add Reality - This song rocked my world.  If this was a race, Ravenheart lapped the field with this song.  After my second listen, I went online and tried to track down the album.  As only used copies were available and going at $20 + shipping, I settled for the mp3 download at amazon.com, but I definitely want a physical copy of this album.  This was the perfect example of how to use growling in a song (and the whole album, damn is it a good album).

Orcus116:  Russian Circles - 309 - I got to check these guys out too.

Advancing to Round 2:

Yorost:  Journey - Of A Lifetime - I knew their pre-Perry days were more progressive, and this song is giving me the proper motivation to check out those albums.
Nekov:  Iluvitar - In The Eye
The King In Crimson: Leprous* - Forced Entry
Obscure:  Lost in Thought - Beyond The Flames
LLTWM:  Psychotic Waltz - And The Devil Cried
Kari:  And So I Watch You From Afar - Set Guitars To Kill
ytserush:  Steve Vai - Attitude Song
Iarwain:  Akercocke - Leviathan
YtseBitsySpider:  Unearth - Arise The War Cry
Ultimetalhead:  The Quill - Keep The Circle Whole
jingle.boy:  Steel Protector - The Last Chapter
Metty:  Rammstein - Mein Land - I used to have their first two albums.  I might have to try to dig them up.
wolfking:  Voyager - The Meaning of I
Sigz:  Dog Fashion Disco* - 100 Suicides

Dead:

Jamesman:  HORSE the band - Cutsman - I like this song a lot more than I thought I would based on the description you sent me.  Last one out unfortunately.
Elite:  Toxic - Shotgun Logic - Another song I liked, just not as much as the ones that made the cut.
Kingshmegland:  I Mother Earth - Hell & Malfunction
73109:  A Pale Horse Named Death - Die Alone
Xanthul:  The Mars Volta - Roulette Dares
The Voxyn:  Radiohead - True Love Waits
Gorille85:  Sleepytime Gorilla Museum - Sleep is Wrong
lonestar:  The Plimsouls - The Oldest Story in the World
ariich:  Manchester Orchestra - Pale Black Eye - I love TDH, but I couldn't get into this song or "Simple Math", which I heard previously.  I guess TDH is all I need in this area.
MK Ultra:  Beardfish - Cashflow - Beardfish and Gungfly just don't click at all for me.
Lateralus88:  Psychostick - Shower
dethklok09:  Brand New - You Don't Know
Antigoon:  The Black Keys - Lonely Boy

For those of you in round 2, submissions are due Thursday.

Ravenheart and Orcus, as to not give you a dissadvantage of missing a round, PM me the name of a band if you would like to take a stab at the 8 remaining artists.  You don't need to pick a song, or even use the band in a future round, jsut a chance to earn a bullet reduction.

:caffeine:

Their first album is the best, but the b-side of Look Into the Future is probably the best single side.  Leave Next until after you see how much you like those two.  It doesn't flow that well as an album, but some of the tracks on it are still great.

Amazing write up  :lol

I'm either going to be very smart or very stupid with the next one.
I expect the latter rather than the former.

Might as well take a risk, only 4 advance out of, what, 11 or 12?  Nothing would surprise me on my submission, anything from first to last.  All I know is I love it so took a shot with it.

I went with something that's going to vibrate his gun holding hand...so he can't shoot me...in the face.

a curious mix of genres clash in a cacaphony of chaos, that, while frustrating to listen to, has enough hooks to keep you listening...and then makes you start it again.

Story won't come today.  I only got to listen to two last night.  That leaves a lot more listening since I listen more than once.

I like the suspense and the reveal of seeing it all at once.  Although, to an extent.  Nick's is no longer suspenseful... it's just a long wait.

After my initial two listens, I'm pretty sure of 3 of the 4 songs that will be advancing, and I'm pretty sure of 7 others that will be getting killed.  Its those four other songs that are fighting for the last spot.

The suspense...

Round 2: The Trials

(note: deaths are not in order of song ranking)

The remaining brave adventurers, having braved the charge up the hill, were surprised to be greeted by sentry upon reaching the gate.  "Congratulations on making it this far.   Please enjoy a beverage of your choice and a concert DVD to watch while you recover."  As the adventures relaxed the sentry approached one of the adventurers.
"I assume you took all the food orders.  Wait...you're not from the kitchen staff.  You must be an assassin, we know women don't listen to prog metal."
With that, the sentry knocked out Obscure and took her to the kitchen, where she was sentenced to 1 year of sammich making.

After their hearty meal, the sentry gatherered the remaining DTF warriors were ushered into a small room by the sentry.
"Your fate awaits you at the end of this hallway.  Sadly, most of you will not make it.  Starting with you.  We let Nekoc through, not Nekov.  This mistake will now be corrected."  The sentry promptly ripped out Nekov's heart and showed it to him before his death.  Before leaving, the sentry tapped Sigz on the shoulder.
"Nice to see you again, Steven Wilson.  It's a shame Neal Morse didn't survive."

It was obvious that this hallway has not been occupied recently, as spider webs and stale air filled the place.  A large spider skittered across the hall and rested on YtseBitsySpider's foot.  Iarwain quickly doused the spider with spider poison, as well as YBS, who's final words were https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PUtFHl0r28Q#t=0m16s (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PUtFHl0r28Q#t=0m16s).  The sentry reappeared and promptly decapitated Iarwain.  "No one kills anything here except us.  That includes spiders.  Damnit people the hallway is supposed to be killing you, not me."

The first challenge the adventures came across was old man.  "Tell me your claim to fame, and I will determine who doesn't proceed."  Kari changed into a cute kitten, which appeased the man.  Metty claimed his importance to petroleum production and was spared.  LLtWM claimed he wanted to grow the biggest afro, and was given a baseball card of Oscar Gamble to inspire him.  jingle.boy sang the ronery song and got a chuckle.
The King in Crimson was humble which impressed the man.  Wolfking claimed he was the king of wolves.  "I keep wolves as pets, lets see if they obey you." chortled the old man.  Somewhere between the wolves growling and pouncing upon the supposed wolf king his royalty was proven false.

"I'm the ultimate metal head." Proudly claimed UMH.  The old man responded by simultaneously headbanging and headbutting UMH until UMH's head resembled pudding.  "Titanium skull." replied the old man.

Ytserush showed pictures of his music collection, which impressed the old man.  The man then asked where ytserush lived so they could hang out sometime.  After jotting down his address and giving it to the man, he was quickly dispatched by the old man.  "My collection now.  Have fun storming the castle!"

The remaining 7 adventurers worked their way up to next floor.  They were greeted by a man in traditional Chinese clothing.  "I have come to finish what grad school started.  Give me your remaining soul, yorost!"  Yorost cranked the volume on his chosen song, but unfortunately the kung-fu champion did not return.  The fighter proceeded to use the dim mak on yorost, and left him to suffer a slow painful death.

Kari openly mused, "How is the next person going to die?"
"I hope it's not me." replied The King In Crimson.
"This beats running from the law, eh?" chimed in LieLowTheWantedMan.

Sigz then remembered seeing a wanted posted and thought.  "Well, I can get a reward if I survive this ordeal.  Was it dead or alive?  No matter."

Sigz then snuck up and hid a grenade in LLTWM's afro, and walked away.  "Mama didn't raise no sucka!" yelled Sigz as LL's head was blown to bits.

As the adventurers moved down the hall, they came across a dead end with a sign, "Please sacrifice one person to continue." Being the polite Canadian, jingle.boy decided to sacrifice himself.  The remaining four adventurers then fell down a trap door and after a long, fun slide ended up in a room where Ravenheart and Orcus116 are waiting.

Results:

Advancing:
The King In Crimson:  Giant Squid - Tongue Stones - Heavy, weird, fun, assertive.  Up my alley

sigz:  Kylesa - Tired Climb - Fuck Yeah.

Kari:  Lis Er Stille - Lys Over Tid - Loved the first 4 minutes, took a bit to adjust to vocals, but overall a pleasureable experience

metty:  Stolen Babies - Filistata - Fun little ditty.  Nice mix of heavy and "carnival" for a lack of a better term.  Second track from them I've heard, second one I liked.

Deceased (or imprisoned):
jingle.boy:  Meatloaf - Bat Out of Hell - I can see how different that song was when it came out.  Entertaining for the most part, kinda felt like it belonged in Rocky Horror.  The race for the last spot was extremely close.  I thought about doing a playoff between you and metty.  Like metty, you gave me something I want to hear more of, and will be keeping an eye out for this album as well.

yorost:  Hiromi - Return of the Kung-Fu World Champion - Interesting.  As.  Fuck.  I don't know if I could listen to large blocks of this, but this song had my full attention for the nearly 10 minute length.

LLTWM:  Big Big Train - Victorian Brickwork - I liked it a good bit, a nice piece to mellow out to.  Just not top 4 this round.

ytserush:  Mastermind - Brainstorm - Better prog metal.  Would have liked to hear a better recording, but I couldn't find one.

Obscure:  Pathosray - Sons Of The Sunless Sky - Nothing stood out.  By the books prog metal.

UMH:  Athiest - Your Life's Retribution - Nothing stood out.  Death metal 101

wolfking:  Eyefear - Confessions - Nothing really stood out.  By the books prog metal.

Iarwain: Les Discrets - Les Feuilles De L'olivier - Nothing stood out or grabbed my attention.

YBS:  Asking Alexandria - Closure - There were parts I liked, but there were also parts I cringed at.

Nekov:  Eloy - Silent Revolution - Run of the mill prog metal.  Honestly, about 5 minutes in I was wanting it to be over.

Round 3 will be posted shortly.

OK, I didn't advance, but I'll tale it. :lol. Just missed in both rounds, that's not so bad.

For the record, that video game jazz prog sound is not typical Hiromi.  It is something she breaks out regularly, say once or twice an album, but most of her work is on grand piano and carries a wide range of emotion.  This actually closes her most elegant and somber album.  She is a zany artist, though, and really became my favourite artist sometime in the last two years or so.

Ravenheart, Orcus, TKIC, Kari, Metty, and Sigz are in a room with its only exit sealed, and the only things inside are a round table, a sentry, and a video screen.  The video screen is turned on.

"Congratulations on making it this far.  Welcome to the Russian Roulette.  Each round, one of you will die. There will be secondary prizes as well, but your main goal should be win the round and make it more difficult for yourself to be killed."

"This round will be open.  However we're going to play a game called "The Length Is Right".  Whoever submits the song closest to length to my favorite Hammers of Misfortune song (simply because that's the band I'm listening to now) without going over that length gets their choice of either a bullit reduction or they can add a bullet to someone else's chamber."

(how it's going to work)
The gun will be a six-sided die.  Russian roulette rounds will either be recorded and broadcast on youtube, or more preferably, one person can watch live via facetime, so if you have an iPhone you may get to watch the blood splatter live whether you are in or not.  I'd prefer to do both though, with someone watching live for accountability purposes.  A roll equal to or less than the number of bullets in a player's chamber means that a live round was fired and the player is eliminated.

If you are interested in being my live verification host let me know.

And sorry for already having all the Haggard albums.  Per Aspera Ad Astra is my favorite song of theirs.  I'd love to see them live someday.

I've listened to all the songs once.  I will listen a few more times before I finish write-ups and assign bullets.  As for the mini-game though, the target time was 7:14, so with a song length of 5:31, Ravenheart wins the mini-game and can decide publicly or privately whether he wants a one bullet reduction, or if he wants to put an extra bullet in someone's chamber.

Round 3

In all honesty, I liked and enjoyed every song, which made ranking them difficult.  The nice thing about Russian Roulette is that having a bad round doesn't necessarily mean your gone, you can get lucky and not face the gun or get an empty chamber.

The King In Crimson:  Diablo Swing Orchestra - Vodka Inferno - Therion goes to the circus was my first thought.  It was playful and fun, metal and operatic.  Just a unique blend of elements that usually aren't seen together.  Three bullets in the chamber for TKIC.

Ravenheart:  Nightingale - Atlantis Rising - Seems like a safe pick, because it's pretty much my alley.  I have to admit the first time I listened to it nothing really struck my ears, but on subsequent listens I picked up some musical phrases I enjoyed, the guitar tone was crisp, clean, and sharp (are you listening Adrenaline Mob?), and just how well the piece was produced.  I will be adding this band to ones I'm going to keep my eye out when I go to music stores.  Only one bullet to worry about.

Kari:  Meanwhile Back In Communist Russia - Blind Spot, Invisible Bend - If I was awarding a "best band name" bonus, this would win it :lol  A solid submission.  The speaking over music reminded me of the style of "Institutionalized" by Suicidal Tendencies; but not angry or metal.  I really enjoyed the instrumental part at the end much more than the beginning of the song though.  The style of the vocals were a bit of a detraction though after the first verse because the music had picked up and they were hard to follow lower in the mix.  I did enjoy the song though, but since I'm ranking them, I have to give Kari 5 bullets.

Sigz:  Maudlin of the Well* - Gleam in Ranks - The clear winner of the round.  This song is great bridge between my proggy phases and metal phases, all in one song.  It starts off going after my proggy sensibilities, with that little high piano riff, and then kicks into gear at the end of the first verse, with those frantic drum fills and overdriven guitar.  This song and the one Ravenheart sent in the first round were inspiration for my re-release thread.  I'm pretty damn sure I need to get my hands on this band's collection as well.  No bullets awarded.  Also, Sigz earned a bullet reduction for sending a Toby Driver band, Sigz now has two bullet reductions.

Metty: Judas Priest - Between the Hammer & The Anvil - I have to admit to only knowing "classic" Priest songs, even though I never really had a reason into not delving into their back catalog other than its a lot of albums to buy, and I they tend to be hit and miss from what I understand.  This song was definitely hit and not miss.  It sounds like classic Priest, which is more than fine in my book.  I also have a fondness for them since they essentially jumpstarted Ripper Owens career.  However, tough decisions have to be made, four bullets for Metty.

Orcus116:  Mastadon - Naked Burn - I don't really get all the hype Crack the Skye got.  Still don't two years later, so I was worried when I saw I was sent Mastadon.  But I liked this song more than anything on CTS.  Maybe it was because this was grittier and had more punch.  Whatever it is, this song is enough to get me to reconsider my stance on Mastadon, I think I would be willing to check out their early work.  Two bullets in Orcus's chamber.

Ravenheart and The King in Crimson have decided to use their bullet reductions, so for the first cycle Ravenheart gets skipped since he wouldn't have a bullet.  I'm going to run the first round in a moment, and I'll have it on youtube as soon as I can upload it.

Want to know who made it?  Watch here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qbJd9y6dLjk&feature=youtu.be (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qbJd9y6dLjk&feature=youtu.be)

For those of you who remain:
I need two submissions for the next round.  First is your normal submission, open round, something I don't already know - the usual.

Second - For this round's mini-game, I want you to select part of a song that has a great instrumental phrase that just kicks the song up a notch.  It should be a song with vocals, but the part has to be instrumental.  Make sure you tell me where it begins.  It can be a solo, a riff, an instrumental bridge, just as it contains no vocals.  Vocals that aren't words are ok, for example the F# part in Learning to Live (since everyone should be familiar with it).   It can be anything except Dream Theater, so don't worry about whether I have it or not.  The prize will be very special...next time you are under the gun you get to turn your gun on another player!

Please don't ruin the video for others by discussing who died, at least not for a day or so :)

So what exactly are you looking for in the second song? 'cause I could send you something obvious like Sultans of Swing, where the solos make kick the song up a lot more than a notch. Or I could send you like a song you possibly may not like which just has a great instrumental bit. You know what I mean?

A new way of doing it, it seems, but it's also death by chance, which can be unfortunate. But that has been backed up by the number of bullets you get, so I get where this is going. very interesting and an awesome way of doing it.

I'm only judging one instrumental bit, should be less than a minute in length but its not a hard time limit.  Send a link and just tell me, "start at 1:13 mark" or whereever it begins.

Seems odd to start at that time especially since this is supposed to be about an instrumental section that elevates the song. Wouldn't it make more sense to just listen to the whole song and get that section in context?

Round 4:

Writeups in order I received them.

Kari: MONO - Moonlight - Like you said, I don't have anything like this.  I'm not a not a very "relaxed" person, especially when it comes to music.  The song picked up the intensity a little after a few minutes, but by and large was a song meant for just spacing out on like you said, so I tried that for the third listen - just lied on my bed with the lights out.  But again, it just wasn't my thing.  I'm not saying it was bad, but it was a little too drawn out and mellow for my tastes.  5 bullets.

The King in Crimson: Oceansize - Commemorative 9/11 T-Shirt - I got different Oceansize songs in my first roulette, and to be honest they didn't exactly have me clamoring for more, largely due to the lack of intensity I mentioned before.  This song unfortunately isn't having me scrambling to add Oceansize to my next purchase.  It had parts that caught my attention that were sandwiched by larger parts that had my mind wanting to wander off and find something to keep it busy.  The parts I liked in this song I liked a little bit more than the ones I liked in Moonlight, so this song edges that one out, but still gets 4 bullets.

Sigz: The New Caledonia - Electro Legs - Like most of Sigz songs, it's hard to pigeon hole his songs, but the thing that kept coming to mind during this song was a jazziness brought by the horns when they popped up and the occasional mini sax solo.  Overall, a rather enjoyable listen, and while the song didn't jerk me around, it kept me guessing at what was coming next.  I just happened to like the next two songs a little bit more.

Orcus116: *shels - Journey to the Plains - This song had some intensity to it, and no it's not over-the-top ballsy metal or anything like that.  Musically, it was somewhere on the post-rock / post-metal borderline, there wasn't really any lyrics to speak of, but the vocal harmonization was really great as was the song overall.  It just edged out the next song, 1 bullet.

Ravenheart:  Skyfire - Esoteric - This is in the same vein as the other songs Zander has sent, so it was definitely a safer play than Sigz or Orcus.  I enjoyed the song obviously, but if I had to nitpick, I'd say that compared to other melodic death bands, their singer might be somewhat of a weak point.  That said, I'll definitely check this band out if I see them around.  2 bullets, but it was close.

for the mini-game, Ravenheart won with a piano section in "Broken Days" by For My Pain...    I fount it interesting that only Sigz had sent from a band I had.

Video will be up as soon as I shoot it and upload it, as well as the next round.

Next round is open, as usual.  For the bonus, I'm going to try something different.  I want a short explanation why your song should win the bonus.  Keep your reasons within the song, the game isn't part of the reasoning.  Winner of the bonus round gets a one bullet reduction and can add one bullet to someone elses chamber.

Round 5:

Ravenheart: Edge of Sanity - Twilight - Another Dan Swano song :)  No I'm not complaining, this song delivers.  I particularly liked some of the guitar riffs.  Zander pretty much nailed it with his description which won the mini-game, so I'll just quote him:
Quote
I think my song is noteworthy for transitioning between ambient/ethereal and crushingly heavy, yet without crumbling into an incoherent slop of neat ideas slapped together with no actual song intact. I also like that the lyrics are emotional with a touch of the supernatural, but they succeed in avoiding to be cheesy. I also find his growl to be very comprehensible when stacked up against the majority of death metal vocalists out there.
The songs were really close this round, and initially the was in second place, but Kari's and Sigz songs improved upon subsequent listens, whereas this one just kind of stayed.  Four bullets, but with Ravenheart turning the gun on someone if it reaches him, someone is in A LOT of trouble.

Kari: 65 Days of Static - Radio Protector - I liked this song, I really did.  Much more than last rounds submission.  First listen I wasn't terribly impressed, but this song really grew on me, and I started noting subtle things that I really liked, particularly the interplay between the guitar and piano parts.  Whatever happens, I'm going to thank Kari for greatly increasing my appreciation for post-rock.  Three bullets.

Sigz: The Ocean - Rhyacian: Untimely Meditations - Alright...another band I really want to check out now.  Like Ravenheart's song, I really liked the balance between the lighter parts and the heavier parts, this pretty much what post-metal is in my opinion.  It was really close between this song and the next song.  Two bullets.

Orcus116: Baroness - Rays on Pinion - I must be softening my stance toward sludge metal because a year ago I wasn't really feeling it, I didn't get the hype Mastadon's Crack the Skye was getting, I scored a different Baroness song pretty low.  Now, a Mastadon song scored well in an earlier round and this Baroness song is winning this round.  Like Ravenheart's and Sigz's song, it had the heaviness I like, but there was just something that grabbed my attention.  I loved the guitar tone as well.  Guess I'm going to have to check out Baroness again.  Round winner, one bullet.

Gonna run the round now.  Will post results soon.

For the three of you remaining:

For the next round, I want between 12 and 15 minutes (those are hard figures, please stick within that timeframe) of music from the same artist, but there has to be at least two songs, and you are free to send more.  You can use different albums, but it has to be the same band/artist.  There won't be a bonus for this round since there will only be three people left, and the final two is a judgement call, not roulette.

No, but I will.  I can tell you though that I tried listening to Sigur Ros song once before when I saw everyone raving about them, and theres a reason I never followed up - but as you'll see when I post write-ups when I get home (soon, just need to wait for a reaction to start), I had misconceptions about all the bands I was sent last round and was rather pleasantly surprised across the board.

Round 6:

This round was interesting because I could see a continuum of style, with a heavy, non-electronic band, a band that is a mix of rock and electronic, and one that was less rock and more drum and bass.  I'll tackle them in that order.

Ravenheart: Type O Negative - Wolf Moon - Love You to Death - So, I've actually heard Type O Negative before, hell, I saw them live.  But that was back on March 26, 1997 when they opened for Metallica, which was my first real concert.  I honestly couldn't tell you anything more about their performance, my best friend and I were too jacked up for Metallica and experiencing our first contact high.  So that's my story, and because they opened for Metallica I guess I just thought of them as a thrash metal band.  Thank you for changing my perception on this Ravenheart, I would call these songs doom metal more than anything else.  I don't know if 18 year old me would have been too receptive to this, but I can tell you 33 year old me is, and I don't really have much doom metal so I might be starting here.  I wasn't too keen on Wolf Moon the first two or three times I heard it, but Love You to Death had me interested on the first listen.  I really had a hard time choosing between this and another group as the round winner, but I had to award the round to Ravenheart on a technicality, which I'll discuss when that time comes around.  One bullet.

Sigz: Pendulum - Witchcraft - Propane Nightmares - Crush - I had never heard of Pendulum, so I was going into this with no ideas what to expect, especially since Sigz can be eclectic and unpredictable.  So I started off with Witchcraft and thought it was pretty rocking, something I might expect from dredg...then it gets pretty electronic, but not in that repetitive house music way that would bore me.  It is a nice balance of rock and electronic.  It had a fun, playful vibe.  So I moved onto Propane Nightmares, which when combined with his current avatar is just brilliant.  This song again had that nice mix, but wasn't quite as fun and playful, not that a song with the word Nightmares is going to be fun and playful.  Crush felt like a more electronic Witchcraft, so it didn't really bring much new to talk about other than reinforce that Pendulum seems to have found a great balance in bringing electronic music into a rock-oriented fold, which was really cool.  I had a very hard time parsing out this selection and Ravenheart's.  These songs went a full minute over the timeframe I asked for, so in the end that made a difficult decision fairly easy since it was extremely close, close enough that I asked you both to send gun selections since I was having a hard time choosing.  Two bullets.

Orcus116: Sneaker Pimps - Lightning Field - 6 Underground - Destroying Angel - Ravenheart went the metal route, Sigz went for a mix of rock and electronic, and Orcus went for a more stripped down sound.  What was interesting was that the songs came from two different albums with different singers, so while musically it was in the same vein, I got two different presentations; kind of like basil and thyme.  The only thing among these songs that I wasn't really feeling was the "buzzing" sound in the background, like a droning electronic static.  Beyond that, there was more to it musically than I would have expected from a band that is described as "trip-hop" by Wikipedia, so while Wikipedia may be wrong, I can honestly say that while I haven't liked full blown electronica music, or house, something like Sneaker Pimps is something I could deal with listening to.  I don't know if I'd go out and buy it, but I'd certainly wouldn't find it musically objectionable.  Three bullets.

Video is uploading now...it;s a long one.  Lots of drama for a change.

Video here:  https://youtu.be/r2hqBCX7E44 (https://youtu.be/r2hqBCX7E44)

For the last round, I want each of you to make me a "mix" CD.  5 songs, 5 different bands - however one may be a repeat of a band you already sent (but not someone else has sent), with three exceptions:  Ravenheart can't send anything off of Moontower or Skyfire because I already bought those albums, and Orcus can't send Baroness since I just ordered those albums, and Sigz can't send maudlin of the well or from the Kylesa album Spiral Shadow, again due to wallet spending..

I listed all three of you so people will have to watch the video to see who died.

Sidenote:

I'm glad to see that people are enjoying that Kylesa album. They don't get talked about much here, but Spiral Shadow is such an awesome album.

Back to your regularly scheduled roulette!

Alright, well I hope the same trend extends to Sigur Rós. Just watch the live video I sent you, all the way to the end.

When offering to participate, does it not come with the understanding of *timely* participation?  It's not like Z is doing his hair or anything!

I'm listening and not holding anything up.  Technically there are 4 roulettes going on now.  I've been super busy the past week both working and working on finding a new job.  Real life has priority over fun time.

Submissions from Ravenheart in the order he gave them to me:

Swallow the Sun - Out of This Gloomy Light
Insomnium - In the Halls of Awaiting
VAST - Here
My Dying Bride - Your Shameful Heaven
How Like a Winter - A Flower that Sears in Silence

Submissions from Orcus116 in the order he gave them to me:

Isis - Hall of the Dead
Oceansize - Part Cardiac
Red Fang - Wires
Red Sparowes - Annihilate the Sparrow, That Stealer of Seed, and Our Harvests Will Abound; We Will Watch Our Wealth Flood In
Russian Circles - Xavii

It was an interesting match-up of styles, Ravenheart stuck to the death metal guns that have gotten him this far, and Orcus116 went with a little more variety.

The way I did this is I put songs in tiers, and tried to judge based on that.

Both had two songs in the "Good" category:
Ravenheart: Insomnium - In the Halls of Waiting and How Like a Winter - A Flower That Sears in Silence
Orcus116: Russian Circles - Xavii and Isis - Hall of the Dead

Both had two songs in the "OK" category:
Ravenheart: My Dying Bride - Your Shameful Heaven and VAST - Here
Orcus116: Oceansize - Part Cardiac and Red Fang - Wires

and I have to admit, I've heard several Oceansize songs before from people trying to get me to like them, and that might have been the best one so far.

That leaves one song from each.  Red Sparowes - Annihilate the Sparrow, That Stealer of Seed, and Our Harvests Will Abound; We Will Watch Our Wealth Flood In from Orcus was a notch below "OK".

Swallow the Sun - Out of This Gloomy Light was...*drumroll*

in GOD territory.  After 3 listens, I ordered the album, and another one from the band on amazon.

With that, I taser Orcus, throw him in to The Sun Cannon and fire his ass into the Sun.

Congratuations Ravenheart.  A well deserved win, sending 2 of my 3 favorite songs from this roulette (Swallow the Sun and Dan Swano), with Gleem in Ranks by maudlin of the Well being the other one, courtesy of Sigz.
