For your social networking needs the Dream Theater Forums now has an official facebook group!
If you have facebook we suggest you go here (https://www.facebook.com/groups/136009483178596/) and ask to join. Over the years I have noticed that people have always looked for ways to chat and facebook seems to offer the easiest solution. In addition the group can serve as a nice transition area for new members who are thinking of signing up or have just started posting. We encourage trying to get your DT minded friends into the group.
The facebook group is more of an open atmosphere than the forum but we do ask that people remain respectful to one another and that postings on the group wall do not reflect poorly on the band or forum.

What happened to the old Facebook group? I thought I was in one before.

I was in one before, but the constant spamming, name-calling and immature posts made me leave it after a while. Is this one any better?

Yeah me too. It was okay, but could get really silly sometimes, and I just didn't need that clogging up my Newsfeed.

Hey, don't want to be the nazi, but just letting you know I'm deleted posts about other groups just because this is the one supported by the forum. :)
Edit: Buy FYI, the one group being talked about was deleted by the creator, so there isn't much to talk about on that front anyway. :)

Well, there is this group for the forum, and if you search the facebooks you can of course find other groups involving members here if you wish to join them.

As of right now permanently banned members are not in the group, but once the group is running smoothly that may change.

Does the group have to be open? I'm hitting the job market soon and I'd like to control where my name comes up in google searches and what people see of my activity and who I associate with. Jamesman expressed a similar concern in the facebook group. Not that there is anything wrong with anyone here, but it's a concern I have because I'm not named John Smith or some other common name, matter of fact no one shares my name.

That's the part that concerns me. It's one of the reasons you can't see shit in my profile unless we're facebook friends, other than my pic which I'll probably change once the first wave of applications go out once I hand in my draft of my dissertation.

Not sure what you were planning to post that would be so inappropriate, but it's your call dude. The old group will continue to exist as a private thing anyway!

It's not what I post, its what other people may post. Guilty by association. I realize I'm being extremely paranoid about this, but I've put too much of my life into getting my doctorate. I've seen part of the hiring process and I've talked to my advisor and schools are very thorough when it comes to hiring. The on-site interview is usually a three day affair. I'm not going to go as far as SeaWolf did in terms of privacy and covering my tracks and leave this place all together - I'm as addicted to this place as I am caffiene - but at the same time I want North Korean type of control about what comes up on a google search of my name. Right now its all Chemistry stuff, a few links to people I'm associated with, and public information.
I'm not the only one with these concerns. I just don't like the "open group" dynamic.

Makes total sense to me. Frankly, it's another reason not to join this new group. Im a Facebook neophyte to begin with, so. Don't really need two groups to serve the same purpose. Prefer my personal name to be linked with a private one.

It being public isn't really a good thing imo, that's what would put people off from joining it rather than bring them in.

I agree. I think making the regular DTFers feel comfy there is paramount, and honestly, they should have to go through here to get there anyways.

Surely there's not really any more risk of people posting something inappropriate on something you've posted/commented on (and that would therefore come up in your friends' news feeds) than there is of people doing the same on your wall or whatever? And besides, we don't expect there to be any inappropriate posting.
But it's your call anyway, if you want a private group to chat with your mates then the old one still exists.

It's also the fact that the way I interact with DTF people is different from my other friends. So when it's open I can't really feel comfortable posting everything.

To add to what TheVoxyn and lonestar said, when we post on here, it's with our handles, not our real names. If I wanted people to have access to information about me, I'd have a more open profile to non-friends. The job hunt aside, I don't want my students to have access to any of my online activity, and I suspect that other people want privacy for other equally valid reasons.

I'm in basically the same position. A lot of posters here have no problem sharing personal information, or know or have met each other in real life, and there are a lot of first names known around here (and some last names), but not everybody is comfortable with that. The vibe on a message board isn't quite the same as the vibe on Facebook. Similar, but definitely different.
The only reason I'm not too worried about it is because right now, I'm not looking for a job, and I don't really have a public side. The only thing I'd consider even remotely a concern is that I have a lot of Facebook friends who I've met through various religious organizations, but I seriously doubt that any of them are so interested in what else I do that they'd hunt down groups that I belong to, check them out, and judge me based on what they find. Some might get one or two steps into that process. But even if they did that, screw 'em. They know me from church; that doesn't make me a prude.

I don't really know how to say this appropriately, especially since this thread hasn't been posted in for quite some time, but I left the Facebook group due to privacy reasons. This has nothing to do with the people posting there or whatever, but today I found out Facebook has updated their whole profile view once again and while my whole profile is completely shut off from the outside world, the new lay-out shows the groups you're in as well, even when you're not befriended with me. Since my Facebook basically contains lots of stuff about me (and hence I have it shut off), I do not want people to have the possibility of looking me up here on DTF, since I post stuff that can be personal here sometimes as well.
Call me paranoid or whatever, but I want my online personality (Facebook, basically) to only be accessible to people I know and since I know screenings through social media happen before job applications, I don't want my being a member of a Dream Theater Fangroup be visible to anyone who can view my profile. Again, this has nothing to do with the people, with the band or with anything else. It's me and me alone, so until the group isn't visible anymore, I will not be in there. People can add me on Facebook if they feel the need to though.
