Showtime Bitches!!!!!!
I called it Who the FUCK is that simply because 80% of the bands talked about on DTF I have never heard, and though I am curious, I just don't have time to do it. I figured this would be a good way to be exposed to some new shit, and also learn a little about my fellow DTFers in the process.

I will be doing six rounds, scoring each on a scale of 1 to 5, based on these rankings of the songs...

Some of the rounds will be simply a "give me this type of song" type rounds, whereas some of the rounds, I will ask you to dig a bit into yourself and give me a story to go with the song.
For my taste, my favorite bands are DT, Yes, I.Q., Marillion, The Who, The Kinks. I am a huge fan of classic rock and prog. I love hair
metal, and a song that moves me will always score high. I love lyrics, they are a huge part of music to me. But as stated above, I am looking for new shit too, so feel free to take chances. I blindly bought a Porcupine Tree a couple months back solely on how DTF strokes them, and within a week had bought two more. If I find something that moves me, I will follow it to the end.
Music is a very personal thing. There is no good or bad, no right or wrong. Something that moves me may not move you, and vice versa. Don't be all butthurt or defensive if I don't like something, we are different people, and that's what makes communities like this so special.
I look forward to hearing all of your contributions. So without further ado.................
Round One- Simple, come out guns blazing and hit me with your best shot. Keep it under seven minutes. Deadline is Tuesday, noon PST.
PM me the link, and make it one I just click and listen. Sound quality isn't a huge issue with me, so Youtube is fine. I don't use any other music sites, so something easy. If it is difficult, I swear it will put me in a shitty mood when I listen to your song, so please show a touch of consideration for an old, computertarded fuck.

I added one more scoring level, it is now 0 points through 5, though I highly doubt anybody is capable of putting up a song that bad that I'd give it a zero. I just wanted a little more leeway in scoring to prevent a tie. If a tie does occur at the end, we will have a one song sudden death between the leaders.

OK, I've listened to all the songs a couple of times, and am ready to review. I will review in the order they were recieved.

Modest Mouse- Bukowski
On my first listen, I thought what the fuck, but it grew on each listen. After a quick bit of research on Charles Bukowski, it made so much more sense, that combined with my own struggles with alcoholism made the song really hit home. If this was planned, your one sneaky fucker. The one line,"Evil me, oh yeah I know, what good curves can you throw", I've lived that one a couple of times. I gotta say too that after my first round of listenings, about ten minutes later, this was the song stuck in my head, catchy little ditty at it's core. In general, this type of music is out of my zone, but it worked this time, and worked well.

Russel Allen and Jorn Lande- Hunter's Heart
Nice. Good rocking song, had me playing air guitar from the get go. The guitar work in the middle was fucking awesome, something I could listen to on a regular basis when I just need some rocking music. The only negatives, the chorus, especially the lyrics, were a bit hokie, kinda Thunderswordish. Also, I really didn't like the ending, they tried too hard to make it a hard ass finale, and failed. Overall a good tune though.

First pitch home run, great fucking song. I kinda soaked it in the first listen, it carried me every other listen. This is the reason my hearing is so fucked up, I just kept wanting to turn this song louder. Good strong, aggressive, and relentless song, really doesn't give you a chance to breathe. I bet this thing would be fucking killer live, but unfortunately, this isn't a live music round. Good call, right off the bat, I got a Rage Against the Machine vibe off them, I'll check more of their stuff out.

Awww man, this song tried to get me, but just didn't. I did like having the bass up front, kind of a Entwistle-esque touch. It just jumped around too much at the end and lost me, I'm not sure how else I can explain it. Also, I just wasn't too hot on the singing.

I think I had heard this song a while ago while listening to the Pandora I.Q. station, go figure. This was a case of right band, wrong song. Don't get me wrong, I liked the song, but it just didn't have the time to develop into what it could have been. I will definately add this band to my basket, but will probably look for one of the concept albums you said they had, when it comes to this type of prog, I like the long artsy fartsy shit.

Paul Gilbert and Freddie Nelson- Last Rock and Roll Star
I like the good old hard rock feel of the song. No important message, no deep meaning, just fucking rock and roll. The rhythm part of the guitar got a bit old, and the solo was nice but a touch predictable. Not an amazing song, but a good bit of fun.

Sigur Ros- Staralfur
Well, that was a curve ball after seven rocking tunes, but a welcome change. I can enjoy beautiful music like this a lot, especially at the right time, and you got me at the right time. I do like to understand the lyrics, but I'll let that slip for now. Not that I'm putting this into my judgement, but I watched the Planet Earth video with this song, and it was fucking beautiful. You gambled a bit cup, and it worked.

I do need to say something. All the songs were great. Judging this was a hell of a lot more difficult than I imagined, it was like trying to decide which bacon was better, or which hot adventerous girl was better in bed, I just hated to put any at the bottom, but I had to. Great job guys, you surpassed my all expectations, and this was only round one. :laugh:

OK, Round Two.....
I have always felt that we here on the forums are different about music than others. There is a passion that resides in us that makes music transcend a mere art form, makes it entwine with our souls at each listen. We were not born with it, it was given to us. We can all define a moment in our lives that a song broke through the barriers of normalcy and permanently rearranged our souls.
I want you to go back to your childhood, briefly describe that moment to me, and then give me that song. Don't worry about finding a new song or band for me to listen to. I am playing voyeur in your past on this one, I want to feel that moment. Within the hour, I will send all of you a PM describing mine so you can get an idea of what I'm looking for. Your stories will not be shared with the rest of DTF.
This is the first of the personal submissions. I will alternate between personal and just plain rock my world rounds. I look forward to hearing your songs and getting to know you guys a bit more. Deadline will be Monday, I want to give you time to be thorough. Good luck!!!

OK, Round Two Results......
This was a very hard round to judge, as I told all of you in my PMs, and in retrospect, I should have thought it through better, but what is, is. First and foremost, I want to thank all of you for sharing your memories with me, I feel I know each of you better, and I am a better man for it. Because of the personal nature, and the epic nature of some of the songs sent(four of them would be on my all time list, easily) my judging is based solely on how well I was taken back to that moment in time when music changed for you, and became a vital part of your soul. Wahoo.... finally nailed one! This round is going to be tricky... do ya go with the lyrics, the music, or the overall mood??? Sentimental/touching ballad, or a rockin' beat that lifts one's spirits? Hmmmm... it's gonna take some time to figure this one out.

I'd say they're not very specific at all, actually. I mean, ok it has to be the first or last track, but it can be any style from any band or artist. Essentially you can choose from every single album in your collection that I don't already know, which is very open.
Whereas Nick has had rounds like "Bands with 3 members" or "Bands with a black guy in", and to be honest most of the bands and artists I listen to I don't know the exact make-up of the band members. That's what I meant by "ridiculously specific".

In the grand scheme of things, lets say albums have on average, 10 tracks. So, in asking for an opening or closing track, you're instantly eliminating 90% of ones library. That is also pretty limiting.
None the less, wih an open round coming from RJ, I know exactly what I'm sending.

Round Four...
Were going live. I have seen over 300 shows, and have seen many bands over ten times, including Yes, Rush, The Kinks, and have seen the Grateful Dead over 40. I love the live show, and it's no mistake that a good portion of my CD collection is live. So post a Youtube video of a live song. I am into overall stage performance. Visuals are a plus, as in Water's Wall tour, but not a necessity. The Kinks have absolutly dick for visuals, and are one of the best shows I have seen. Make me a part of the show. This is a new band round, and for this round, no repeat bands, since I have made reference to liking some of the previous bands live videos, as in Mars Volta, Incubus, and Foxy Shazam. Cell phone shots are acceptable, and I won't judge harshly on sound quality, as long as it doesn't totally suck. And make sure it isn't the equivolent of some guy shooting ten minutes of JP shredding, I want to see the whole band. Good luck, deadline is the end of the year, midnight.

The Scene....
It is bosk1's kid's birthday, and a huge party is in full swing. One child who bosk didn't want to invite because of his mischevious nature has gone awry. In his wanderings, he has found the secret underground cavern that holds all of the hardware for Dreamtheaterforums, and proceeds to pour his MelloYello soda all over it. Snap. Fizzle. Boom. DTF is fried, dead, no mas. All the data, everything, is officially toast. In his depression, bosk1 slides off the grid, and no one steps up to the plate. DTF is no more.
Your mission, should you choose to accept it, eulogize DTF in one song. All I want is a link, no description, no nothing, just a song. Last round kids, and King. I just want to say a couple things first before we jump in, thank you for sharing your music and a bit of yourselves with me, I do appreciate it. Most of the music has been off the charts, and I have a lot of music to buy in the coming days.
Last round: Finish in style. Must be a new song to me, no repeat bands. I want a song that moves and rocks, a buttkicking "fuck yeah!!!" song. Oh, and double points for double time. That's right, songs must be a minimum eight minutes, no more than twelve. Think Metropolis Pt.1, Yours is No Disgrace by Yes, Forgotten Sons by Marillion, One by Metallica, Freebird, Kashmir, etc. It's pretty wide open on this one folks. Amaze me, just make it somewhat of an epic, but not a total epic(meaning in the time allotted. Deadline is Sunday at midnight. In the event of a tie for the lead after this round, there will be a one on one playoff between the leaders with a theme of my choosing. Any songs sent that I have heard, I will let you know. BTW, I don't listen to the songs till all are received, I just check the artist and song to make sure I haven't heard it, so I have no idea what I received from him. Your songs, along with most of the others have been very good, his have just been a bit better, especially that last one. What a great fucking tune.

One of the bands I know well of but never took the time to dig into them. Shit, I even own two of their albums, given to my by a hot German chick when she found out I dug DT. As expected, they made me want to bust out my 20 sided and a DM screen. Killer song though, really got the blood pumping. Epic instrumental, loved the drumrolls, they transition nicely. Can't say I love the choral singing, kinda pushes into cheese land, but it fits with the rest of the song well. This song gets a :lonestar: -Six Points

First thing I noticed when I saw the video is that they're playing here Saturday, so if I liked it enough, I could go see them. Looks like I'm saving a couple of bucks here. Not a bad song, just really fucking gloomy at the beginning, I was about to call my sponsor to prevent a relapse, then the instrumental hit towards the end. Loved it, loved the cello, it always hits right to my celtic side for some reason. Really solid finish to what I thought was another "WTF is sigz sending me" songs. I just gotta say this, how does a high school kid come across prog from the seventies that I, a forty year old dude who has been listening to Yes since he was seven, haven't heard of. Fuck, I was two when it came out, and that was before the rest of these cats were alive, except old man king, of course, who was all ready shaving. I give you props for going old school, and that is what this song was. Drippy, proggy, nostalgia on a stick. Cheese factor very high, and it never quite hit epic for me, just kinda dragged on and on. Guilt Machine ... nice submission. That would be Arjen A. Luassen's Guilt Machine (another side project from Arjen). Serisouly RJ, you would love pretty much everything from Arjen and his projects.
Spock's Beard... you can't go wrong with anything from them. I wouldn't start with their s/t, that's probably the weakest of the bunch. V and Snow are usually considered their best, although I'm partial to Day For Night and Octane.

After hearing that for the first time Deantoni Parks immediately became my favorite drummer. He just has something that no other drummer I've ever seen has, and I have no idea what it is. He's just that good. Since you liked that song I definitely reccomend checking out the other videos from that performance and another one in New York up on YouTube, although the ones in Los Angeles are FAR superior than the NY ones.
