Title: ariich's roulette of wonder, part II (Final results, PLUS AWARDS CEREMONY)
Post by: ariich on November 28, 2011, 01:45:39 PM
ARIICH’S ROULETTE OF WONDER, PART II

We’re back, bitches! Competition should be fierce this time:

Gorille
LLTWM
DTVT
Ytse
Ravenbuel
jingle
kingshmeg
Sigzypoo

I haven’t yet decided how many rounds I’ll do, it depends how fast things go and how many ideas I come up with. But it’ll be in the region of 6-8 rounds, and if it’s on the lower end then I’ll do some kind of playoff/final, just to add a fun bit of competition in! I would like to keep this roulette a bit more prompt than the last one I did (which was usually my fault, admittedly) but I know I didn’t send a reminder as I didn’t realise I was up so soon, so a bit of a delay on this first round will be forgiven.

The themes will mostly be based around moods, rather than specific styles or anything too restrictive. Hopefully this will keep things somewhat open and allow people to send things that they think I'll like, rather than struggling to find something that happens to fit an arbitrary theme.

What you can send me:

Rather than use last.fm (which is not really suitable for me as lots of stuff I listen to isn’t in there, and it’s not really indicative of how much I like something), I use RYM. My account is here: https://rateyourmusic.com/~ariich

[In case you’re not familiar with RYM, here’s how to use it for this: scroll down to the Music section of my profile, and you can check out the Ratings button to see the list of my 5 star albums, 4.5 star albums, and so on. It also makes things easy to see if I am familiar with a band or artist, as at the top of the Music section there is a “Search ariich's music for” field, so you can check whether I have rated an artist (if not, it will run the search but there will be no results).]

I will allow submissions of any band or artist I have never rated an album by with more than 3 stars, as long as the song sent is not on an album I have rated. Obviously artists I’m not at all familiar with are best, but sometimes I hear some music that I’m not that keen on but the artist has other music that I might love. Use this however you like, but obviously the more albums I’ve rated lower by an artist (or indeed the more similar a song is to the album I’ve rated lower) the less likely I am to like the other song by them.

If the same artist is sent by more than one person in the same round, that’s fine. Once an artist has been submitted, they cannot be sent again if they scored 3 or more points (reasons same as above). This may seem weird, but Mason used this to very good effect in my first roulette.

There is no limit on song length, though obviously I will be judging from only a few listens, so if a song is particularly long or meandering, that could be quite risky.

How to submit:

My main preference for submissions is via Spotify links, but if you don’t use Spotify (or the song is not on there) then submissions can also be mp3s or, failing that, Grooveshark. Absolute last resort can be Youtube, but I’d prefer not (unless there’s a particularly significant promo vid accompanying).

Links should be via PM, mp3s via email (to my DTF username @gmail.com).

How I will score:

The top song each round will receive 6 points. The rest of the songs will score anything from 1-5, but there will only ever by a maximum of two songs receiving the same number of points to ensure there is a spread. I.e. the highest quality round will see scores of 6, 5, 5, 4, 4, 3, 3, 2, and the worst will see 6, 4, 3, 3, 2, 2, 1, 1.

My tastes:

I have very eclectic tastes, in all honesty. I am extremely open-minded and have no bias when it comes to genre or style. I am more familiar with various rock and metal genres than any other simply because of my listening habits as a teenager, but even within those there is a ton of stuff I’ve never checked out. So just send me anything you think I’d like based either on my RYM ratings, or anything else you know about me, or even simply because you yourself love it. It’s not a requirement, but in your submissions if you could include an explanation of what's so good about the song, I can listen out for it.

ROUND 1: Opening Songs – I love a good start to an album, so send me any song that opens an album. If there is an intro track that leads into the first full song, it is fine to send both as one submission. Other than that, no restrictions on style, etc. Go!

No spotify in Canada, and given my travel schedule, it will have to be grooveshark links if you don't mind.

You'll have something in your inbox when you wake.

No problem at all, any of my top 3 preferences (spotify, mp3 and grooveshark) are completely fine.

I'll be taking the "fuck you I'll send what I want" approach this time around.

First round submission: a 40 minute Merzbow song.

Quick question... if track 1 is like a 60 second intro song (a la  Angra/Temple of Shadows), would it be ok to send track 2?

Yeah I probably could have worded it more clearly - an intro track doesn't need to segue directly into the second track, really I meant if there is a separate intro track, then send both that and the first full song together. I'd like to experience how the album kicks off. :)

Sent, although I probably pulled the trigger a little early and should have went more thoroughly through my collection, although based on some of his ratings I think I'll be ok.

ADDON: Yeah, I'm finding more things I wish I would have sent.

ADDON: Yeah, I'm finding more things I wish I would have sent.
:lol I always do that in roulettes. I haven't got round to hearing yours yet, so you're welcome to replace it if you want to, but of course that runs the risk of doing less well than you might have done. Like I said, I haven't heard the song yet, so it's entirely up to you. Other songs you're finding might be usable later on, remember.

I should also add to what I said in the OP that after this first round, the themes for this roulette will be mostly based around moods, rather than specific styles or anything else too restrictive. In fact, I think I'll add something about that to my OP.

Really digging all the songs I've got so far, quite an eclectic mix.

Great, I've been listening to the songs this evening including yours as well now Ytse, so expect results later tonight.

Also, I've decided on round themes so will be doing 7 rounds, with the top 2 after this going to a final playoff with a twist. I haven't decided what the twist will be yet though...

EDIT: Oh one more thing I want to add in general - as most of the rounds have a theme, I will be taking both how much I like the song and also how well I feel it fits the theme into account when ranking them.

This round is easy... Either it was the opening track or it wasn't.  Unless someone tried to slip one past you.

RESULTS – ROUND 1: Opening Songs
So this round highlighted something very important. If you are sending Grooveshark links, MAKE SURE IT IS THE RIGHT SONG. Or just scrap Grooveshark entirely. :P The song Marc sent by Everything Everything was incorrectly tagged in Grooveshark and I only discovered the error when I synced up the song on Spotify to my iPod so I could listen to some of the songs at work. As it happens, I enjoyed the actual song a lot more. This is just one of the many reasons I much prefer Spotify or mp3, as (1) this error is much less likely, and (2) I can upload/sync the songs to my iPod and listen out and about. Doing this will make result updates much quicker from me.

Anyway, on with the results! Very strong round, I enjoy all the songs quite a bit, but obviously there has to be winners and losers…

6 points: Ravenheart
Jill Tracy – Evil Night Together
I really adore the dark jazzy vibe here. As soon as the first phrase played, I had a feeling I was going to like where it was going, and the song did not disappoint. On very first listen I wasn’t entire sold on her voice, but on subsequent listens I concluded that it really is perfect for the song.

5 points: Gorille
Everything Everything – My Kz Ur Bf
As I said, you’re lucky I discovered that the link you said was wrong, because I really like this song! My music collection is definitely low on synth pop – not that I have anything against it at all (or indeed any genre), I just haven’t often heard much that I’ve found particularly interesting. But this song definitely has something a little different and unusual about it, rhythmically and harmonically, and it works so well! And that chorus is really very catchy. Great stuff!

4 points: DTVT
Arch/Matheos – Neurotically Wired
Wasn’t entirely sure about this song at first but I think it’s just because it took a couple of listens to get used to Jon Arch’s unusual voice again. But once that settled in, the song struck me as an interesting blend of old and new Fates Warning, and the “Rise higher” chorus is particularly excellent, such an interesting tune. I dig the song a lot overall, but I decided to not award 5 points because I do find the song drags a little – I’m not sure there’s enough variety in what’s going on to really justify the length, and I do find myself tuning out a bit towards the end.

4 points: Ytse
Jorn – Young Forever
You’re right about this song opening the album with a kick in the balls, such a rocking riff! I’ve only heard one of Jorn Lande’s solo albums and I wasn’t hugely impressed by it, but I enjoyed this considerably more than anything I heard on that. Like I said, rocking riff, and I always love his voice. This song also demonstrates the quality of his vocal melodies, which is one of the things I thought was really lacking on the album I heard. Looks like his other solo stuff will be worth a listen after all!

3 points: King
Marc Broussard - Home
It’s pretty amazing that this song was recorded when Broussard was only 22, because he definitely does not sound that young. If you hadn’t told me that and I had to guess, I’d have said he was a middle-aged blues singer. I’m sure it must be down to excessive smoking or something! Anyway, he has a great voice, much more mature than his years, and the song is really catchy, especially the vocal harmonies in the chorus. Unfortunately this was a strong round and the song just didn’t grab me as much as the ones above it.

3 points: LLTWM
Boards of Canada – Ready Let’s Go/Music is Math
Not sure how I’d describe this, but I know I like it. Maybe ambient electro? The intro track sets an interesting mood, and then I love the vibe of the first full track. Very chilled out, almost serene despite the electronic drums that come in. Hard to describe, as I said, but it’s a really intriguing style that draws me in. Only slight downside is that the track doesn’t really feel like it goes anywhere. Then again, that might be the point. I’m definitely going to give the full album a listen though, so as an opening it’s certainly doing something right!

2 points: Sigz
Circle Takes the Square – Intro/Same Shade as Concrete
MY BRAIN, WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO IT?! I love the atmospheric intro, but then shit gets crazy. This was definitely a song that needed repeat listens, because there’s just so much going on. I actually enjoy it quite a bit, and will be checking out the album, but I think at times (such as the start of SSAC) it just gets a bit too manic for my brain. I have a similar problem with earlier Unexpect, and part of why I like their newest so much is that the ideas were more refined and the craziness was toned down. As this was their debut, I feel like Circle could be a similar case.

2 points: Jingle
Crosby, Stills & Nash – Suite: Judy Blue Eyes
This is a nice song, some lovely vocal harmonies reminiscent of the Beatles or maybe Simon & Garfunkel. Can’t really find much else to say about this song, as there isn’t really a great deal going on, and I think that’s part of why it didn’t grab me that much. I don’t dislike it at all, far from it, but there wasn’t really anything that I found particularly exciting either. That said, I can’t deny that I do find the very last section really catchy. :lol

The Scores
Raven: 6
Gorille: 5
DTVT: 4
Ytse: 4
King: 3
LLTWM: 3
Sigz: 2
Jingle: 2

ROUND 2: Sad – One of the things I love in music is how it can sometimes really make you feel emotional, whether it’s through the lyrics or the music itself (or often a combination of the two). So for this sound, send me something that you feel evokes a feeling of sadness. I EXPECT TEARS!

By the way, I've added into the "What you can send" section of my OP a list of the artists that have been used and scored 3 points or more. I've put it in italics and I'll keep it updated after each round, so the combination of that and RYM should make it clear what is off-limits.

RESULTS – ROUND 2: Sad
Another very strong round, maybe even more so in fact as I found it very difficult to rank the songs, other than the first two.

6 points: Gorille
Music for Money – La Marche
I absolutely loved this from my first listen, such beautiful music. The melody at the start of the piece is just so haunting and sorrowful, and it never really lightens in mood throughout, even as the pace picks up. I hadn’t heard of these guys but it seems they’re a Canadian post-rock band, and I think I’ll be getting myself a copy of the album this is from.

5 points: Sigz
The Decemberists – A Record Year for Rainfall
Another amazing song, and a strong contender for top spot. Lovely, sad, bleak folk music, with some nice but rather depressing lyrics. It’s also got a real rainy-day feel, which fits the title, and I think that’s part of why I like the whole package so much. The strings are used perfectly as well, they don’t really do much beyond playing some slow chords but it complements the acoustic guitars really well. Need to give these guys a proper listen sometime!

4 points: King
Dada – Star You Are
As with the previous song, the music here is really lovely, folk-inspired and melancholy. The song has such a nice vibe and very reflective feel to the music and lyrics. The lyrics don’t tug on my heartstrings as much as the Decemberists’ song though, I can relate to them but they don’t feel like they tell as much of a story. Great submission still!

4 points: LLTWM
Red House Painters – Katy Song
Yet another song about heartbreak. :lol I’ve heard an album by these guys before (I think their debut?) and it was alright but I didn’t find it particularly interesting, but I really liked this. I don’t know if it’s just more my thing or if I just liked how well it fit the mood of this round, but it felt a lot more convincing and real. Definitely put me in a very mellow mood.

3 points: Jingle
Johnny Van Zant – Brickyard Road
The whole concept behind this song is just so moving, and the lyrics, while quite straightforward, are very heartfelt. I like the music a lot as well, but I have to say, I think I’d have found it more touching if it had stayed mellower like it is at the start. The mood there is so great, and as much I love the playing in the solo section, I just feel it sounds a little power-ballad which detracts from the subject matter for me. Still a really good song though, I had no idea Ronnie Van Zant’s brother was even a musician!

3 points: Raven
Depeche Mode – Sister of Night
Good god this song is depressing. :sadpanda: The lyrics are fascinating (there seem to be a number of different interpretations, all of which seem valid!) and the music is dark and brooding. I do really like the vibe, but I dunno, the song hasn’t really grabbed me that much yet. I’ve not listened to a great deal of Depeche Mode, but this song has intrigued me enough to want to give a full album a listen.

2 points: DTVT
Peter Gabriel – I Grieve
The first half of this song is the very definition of “melancholy”. It’s slow and minimalist, but sad in a reflective way, and I think that works really well. The music is actually quite pretty and uses major keys here and there, but still feels very sad because of the overall sonic approach. Very nice music, and moving lyrics as well, really putting across how hard we all find it to grieve and move on. As with Jingle’s song, I think I’d have found the song more effective if it had stayed mellow and serene, but the last couple of minutes are so upbeat musically that the effect is lost.

1 point: Ytse
Bullet for my Valentine – The End
I completely appreciate the fact that you went for something a bit unexpected here, because that’s exactly what I want to encourage, and indeed there are other heavier songs that evoke a feeling of sadness. But as much as I do enjoy this song, I just didn’t get any kind of sad feeling from it. Not a bad song at all, on the contrary it’s prompted me to give them a listen as I’ve never really bothered before. It just struck me as nothing special and to me it didn’t fit the round really.

The Scores
Gorille: 5 + 6 = 11
Raven: 6 + 3 = 9
King: 3 + 4 = 7
LLTWM: 3 + 4 = 7
Sigz: 2 + 5 = 7
DTVT: 4 + 2 = 6
Ytse: 4 + 1 = 5
Jingle: 2 + 3 = 5

ROUND 3: Happy – In a quick turnaround, I want you all to go in the opposite direction and send me something that makes me feel happy! It doesn’t have to be happy/cheesy music itself or anything, although that would be good, but the important thing is that it makes me feel happy. Go! :D

Katy Song 4evah.  For a "sad song" submission it really can't get any better.

La Marche is also awesome.

Damn.... shoulda sent my other choice then.  I was actually wanting this in the song, sad theme/lyrics, but still a little up beat.  Oh well.  Least I'm improving.

This round, I have a grand idea... but will need to peruse the library to be sure.  G'night Rich.

I'll be completely honest, I completely forgot about the second half of my song.  All the songs that came to mind immediately I either sent the band last time or you already had.  I listened to the first minute of my song and said, "I remember this song, and somehow Rich doesn't know his fellow Brit."

I'll have to listen to the whole song next time I try working from memory.

:lol No worries, it didn't really make me like the songs from you or Jingle any less, but like I said I'm judging both on how much I like the song AND how well it fits the theme, and in strong rounds things like that can make a big difference. And with both songs I felt the last couple of minutes detracted from the sadness somewhat.

I wasn't complaining, just stating that I forgot about the second half of my song.

These "emotions" rounds suck for me, because I'm a cold-hearted bastard and rarely have feelings, other than rage directed at stupid morons.

If I can't find something that fits the round that you don't have soon, I'm just sending a song about gay cowboys butt-fucking...and yes I can and will follow through with that threat.

Hey, if the song makes me feel happy, that's all I ask for. :D

I know what you mean about the themes, but I quite like these mood themes because it leaves them very open. The next round's theme is not based on moods, although I can't promise you (or indeed anyone) will like it any more... :P

If I had something that Rich didn't already have I'd be fine.  The few songs I equate to happy are from bands Rich has in his RYM.  I have in mind 20+ bands I'd like to send at some point in the roulette, but the round theme is rather limiting for me.  Unfortunately Rich isn't a 17 year old kid with a small collection and sending "She's Always Singing" by The Dear Hunter isn't the quick and easy answer.

I got things to do today besides worry about a song, so he's getting a song about inter-racial sodemy.

RESULTS – ROUND 3: Happy
Wow so this was a really hard round to rank, there was lots of good music, but there’s such an interesting range of styles and moods. I think some people got what I meant by “happy” a lot more than others. Still, the songs were all strong enough that I didn’t give a 1.

6 points: LLTWM
Moon Safari – Yasgur’s Farm
You really tapped right into my love of Flower Kings here – this is such nice, harmless but still engaging, whimsical prog! It’s funny, I know this is a style that was pioneered in the 70s, and maybe it’s just my preference for more modern production, but I think modern bands do old-prog better than the original bands. TFK are a perfect example and one of my favourite bands, and with this song Moon Safari remind me very much of a similar style. Really lovely music, thanks for introducing me to it!

5 points: Raven
VNV Nation – Resolution
This song makes me so happy, I can’t even explain it. The beat and the cheesy synths are really infectious and the music is so toe-tapping, and then when it gets to the uplifting chorus it really does evoke such a good feeling. This was a strong contender for the top spot, but the one thing that held it back slightly for me is the guy’s voice – it’s just really not at all interesting. Other than that, fantastic submission!

5 points: Sigz
Battles – Atlas
What the hell did I just listen to? I’ve heard it a few times now and it’s still completely bizarre, but really cool at the same time. Similar to Zander’s entry, it’s got a rhythm that’s really infectious and even though I find the music really weird, I find myself bobbing along and enjoying it tremendously. I’ve heard of Battles but never really bothered to check them out properly, but I feel I owe this album a listen now, just to see what on earth is going on.

4 points: Gorille
Foxy Shazam – Wanna-be Angel
First things first, I really really enjoy this song. It’s fantastic pop-rock – catchy, fun and very easy to sing along with! The music itself is very upbeat as well, the only downside for this round is that the lyrics are actually a little depressing. Not that they completely clash with the music or anything, I just think it fits the round a little less well than the songs that came above it. Definitely going to check the band out further though!

3 points: Ytse
Magic Elf – Scrambledeggs
I can’t say this is the sort of thing I’d listen to regularly, but I’m really enjoying it for what it is, although “what it is” is also something I’m trying to figure out. :lol Some kind of fusion between country and blues rock maybe? Either way, it’s terrific fun and the guitarist (and lutist…) plays really nicely!

3 points: Jingle
Iggy Pop – Lust for Life
Songs with an infectious beat seem to be a very common theme this round. :lol I enjoy this song a lot, definitely a fun, upbeat feel-good song and very fitting for this round. Only issue for me is Iggy Pop’s voice – I’ve never particularly been a fan of it, and this song hasn’t changed my mind at all. Shame really, I think with a stronger vocal this song would have scored a lot higher!

2 points: DTVT
D.C. Cooper – Angel Comes
I’d never heard any D.C. Cooper before and what I’ve heard of Royal Hunt I haven’t been a huge fan of, so I wasn’t sure I’d like his solo stuff, but I actually rather like this song. Sure it’s fairly cheesy, but the melodies are really really good. Biggest problem for this round is the fact that I don’t really get much of a happy vibe from it at all. It’s a pretty upbeat song in terms of energy, no doubt, but not exactly happy, motivational or uplifting. Funny thing is, if you’d just submitted the cowboy love song, which is really funny, I might have been inclined to bump you up to 3 points.

2 points: King
Ligaments of Cooper – Underwater Birthday Party
Meanwhile this song definitely fits the round, and is very entertaining. The music is lots of fun and the ska vibe in the verses in particular had me bobbing along to it. Main thing that drags it down for me is the singer’s voice which is a little unusual and just doesn’t seem to really fit the music for me (I hope that’s not your brother!). Also, I really dig the second saxophone solo, but the first one sounds a bit out of tune. :lol Can’t see this getting many listens from me, but I still enjoyed it.

The Scores
Gorille: 5 + 6 + 4 = 15
Raven: 6 + 3 + 5 = 14
LLTWM: 3 + 4 + 6 = 13
Sigz: 2 + 5 + 5 = 12
King: 3 + 4 + 2 = 9
DTVT: 4 + 2 + 2 = 8
Ytse: 4 + 1 + 3 = 8
Jingle: 2 + 3 + 3 = 8

ROUND 4: So Bad it’s Good – As we’re at the mid-point of this generally tricky roulette, I figured it was the perfect time to inject a bit of fun. This time we’re taking a 180 degree turn away from the whole song roulette concept, and indeed any kind of common sense. I’m a pretty optimistic listener in general, and it’s rare that I find music that bad, usually I just don’t’ find it very interesting and never listen to it again. However, on occasion I will come across something that is so fundamentally terrible its very existence offends me, and yet because of this the experience of listening to it is enjoyable because it is so damn funny. The perfect example of this is True Symphonic Rockestra, which my brother and I play for giggles on occasion but is otherwise basically unlistenable.

Send me something that you think I will find so terrible I’ll find it hilarious. It can be anything within my usual rules but has to be by a professional band/artist (i.e. no random covers by kids in their bedroom or anything).

And to spice this round up I’m also going to introduce a wager on the point scoring. The songs will be ranked and will each get an individual score of 4, 3, 2, 1, 0, -1, -2 or -3. When you submit the song, I want you to also tell me whether you are wagering the points as they are, double points, or half points. THIS IS THE CHANCE TO TURN THE TABLES! THE UPPER HAND COULD BE ON THE OTHER FOOT! ETC!

GO!

RESULTS – ROUND 4: So Bad it’s Good
Wow, you guys are all insane. :lol Firstly, everyone wagered double points. Secondly, there’s a hilarious array of bad music in here, although some much more so than others. The songs that scored highest are those that are genuinely awful but try to be good, because this is what’s so funny about it. Songs that weren’t hideous enough, or were deliberately bad as a joke, have generally scored lower.

Although I was hoping the wager system would turn the tables a bit, it seems to have just gone the other way and made the gaps even bigger, except for one guy who really climbed up! But, just some advance warning – all is not lost, as I will be repeating the wager system for my final round.

Raven
4 points – wagered double – 8 points
Brokencyde – Freaxxx
Good god. This song. I can’t believe this actually exists. I have nothing else to say.

Ytse
3 points – wagered double – 6 points
Holy Grail – My Last Attack
THESE VOCALS IN THE VERSES – URGH! Right, that’s that said. As many people will know, I dislike using words such as “generic” to describe why I dislike something, because it’s usually used unfairly and just a lazy get-out from just saying that you happen not to like it. However, in this case, it’s the perfect description. The song isn’t even that terrible – the chorus is quite enjoyable and there’s a decent solo – the problem is that this is the very definition of mediocre power metal that, I can only assume, is meant to be serious. And that is what is so dire about it.

Gorille
2 points – wagered double – 4 points
Gunther – Ding Dong Song
OH YOU TOUCH MY TRA LA LA.
OH MY DING DING DONG.
This guy sounds like a legend, I’m going to have to check him out.

LLTWM
1 points – wagered double – 2 points
Black Out Band – Video Games
Wtf was that. I didn’t score it higher because I simply don’t believe it’s trying to be serious, but this is absolutely ghastly. Even as a joke it should never have existed. Brb going to play video games.

DTVT
0 points – wagered double – 0 points
WDVE – Deathtrain
OH MY GOD MY EARS. I feel like this was cheating slightly as the song was deliberately written to be bad. That said, I still put it mid-table because it really is absolutely horrible to listen to. And yes, I forced myself to listen through the whole thing. Twice. Not in a row though, I think that might have resulted in suicide.

King
-1 points – wagered double – -2 points
Sweatpants Boners – Number 2
So, a song about poo. Nice. Again I think it’s kinda cheating as, based on the name of the band, I don’t think these guys are meant to be taken seriously. :lol

Sigz
-2 points – wagered double – -4 points
Hammerhead – Everybody Gets Laid Tonight
Sorry dude but this just wasn’t awful enough. Don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t at all good, but I just found it boring. Although the lyrics are quite laughable!

Jingle
-3 points – wagered double – -6 points
Bob & Doug Mckenzie – Take Off
This is an unusual submission as it didn’t really strike me as bad – I mean the fictional group is a comedy sketch and the song is actually quite funny and enjoyable. Plus Geddy Lee’s cameos are kinda cool. I mean it’s not great, and it is funny to listen to, but those two facts aren’t actually related!

The Scores
Raven: 6 + 3 + 5 + 8 = 22
Gorille: 5 + 6 + 4 + 4 = 19
LLTWM: 3 + 4 + 6 + 2 = 15
Ytse: 4 + 1 + 3 + 6 = 14
Sigz: 2 + 5 + 5 – 4 = 8
DTVT: 4 + 2 + 2 + 0 = 8
King: 3 + 4 + 2 – 2 = 7
Jingle: 2 + 3 + 3 – 6 = 2

Actually, WDVE didn't write the song.  It was some band's honest attempt at a song, someone thought it was funny and much like Star Wars kid it got distributed without the band's permission.  That's what makes it so funny, the band is really trying and they are truely, truely awful.

No they are not a serious band. :lol  But they have release 5 albums on a major label.

but we thought that band sucked so much and that damn song stuck in my head to the point of me getting it.  It was sort of like watching Killer Clowns From Outer Space.  The movie was so bad, it was good! :lol

Wow. Just, wow. :lol I feel like it should be higher, but it's too late now, and besides, the other songs up there are genuinely awful and by established artists, so on balance I'm still happy with my rankings.

I always thought everyone knew BrokenCYDE. I know several people who listen to them. It's pretty sad.
I know of them because I've seen them mocked plenty, I've just never actually felt the desire to listen to them. Lots of things get mocked but they're rarely this terrible.

Hmm, maybe the title confused things, but that's why I tried to give a lengthy explanation of what I meant for that round. Being bad doesn't make something actually good, that wouldn't make sense, bad is bad. But the act of listening to something so completely awful can be entertaining for the sake of mockery/hilarity. That's what I was going for. Sorry if it wasn't entirely clear! :)

No sweat.  Take Off is a bit of a catchy tune, but the overall concept is just musically and lyrically bad.

RESULTS – ROUND 5: So energy!
Another strong round, all of the songs had energy but it was interesting to see the range of styles this covered.

6 points: Sigz
Caravan Palace – Clash
This seriously made me want to dance. I’ve never really listened to any electro swing but if this is indicative of the genre then WHERE THE HELL HAVE I BEEN ALL THIS TIME?! Absolutely loved every second of it, and went straight to buy the album on download after hearing it. Funky, groovy, fun, awesome.

5 points: LLTWM
Birds and Buildings – Birds Flying Into Buildings
Another tune I absolutely loved from the first listen! Prog jazz fusion isn’t a common style in my music collection, but this track is amazing so I can see the album joining my collection soon. It’s fast and cool, with lots of great rhythms and fantastic playing from everyone in the band, and I really love the variety in style and sound/instrumentation throughout. Some bits sound like pure 70s prog while others are straight-up jazz, and then the rest is a nice blend of the two. Great stuff!

4 points: Jingle
Flaming Row – Unearth the Truth
Terrific modern prog rock right here, such a big sound these guys have right from the off, and when the song gets going it’s definitely a thumping, head-banging song. Nice playing, some great melodies and lots of good ideas. It does border on overly cheesy in a couple of places, but never goes down that route for long before returning to the juicy good stuff. I really want to give the album a listen now!

4 points: King
The Raconteurs – Hold Up
This was a really good fun jam-rock song. I’m not a huge fan of the White Stripes but I know the potential Jack White has as a songwriter because of the few really good songs they have, and this really floats my boat much more than his White Stripes stuff. Simple enough, but it got me bobbing along to it!

3 points: DTVT
Vanishing Point – Embodiment
The way this song starts is really amazing, and I thought I was going to absolutely love it. And indeed it’s a solid song with some really nice ideas in it, but once it got going it didn’t grab me as much as I thought it was going to from the huge intro. I think maybe it’s the vocals, which are competent enough but lack a bit of character. Nice energetic prog-power metal though, with a pretty catchy chorus!

2 points: Ytse
Asking Alexandria – Closure
This song has so many cool ideas, I do enjoy it rather a lot. Quite a few bits got me head-banging, and the song definitely has a ton of energy, probably more than any other song this round! Only issue for me was the song seemed very incoherent – good ideas but total lack of any flow or sense. Still, the good stuff in it is good enough to still make the song enjoyable!

2 points: Raven
The Crüxshadows – Birthday
I’ve heard a couple of Crüxshadows songs before that I really dug, but this didn’t grab me nearly as much as those did. It has a nice beat to it and some good melodies, but large parts of this song I just didn’t particularly interesting. The chorus is really catchy though, no denying that! I’m still going to check them out properly at some point.

1 point: Gorille
Gojira – Vacuity
You took a risk with this one, as I’ve heard another Gojira album but I didn’t really like it all that much and only rated it 2.5 stars. And unfortunately this hasn’t really changed my mind. It’s not bad by any means, I just don’t really hear much in that I find very exciting.

The Scores
Raven: 6 + 3 + 5 + 8 + 2 = 24
Gorille: 5 + 6 + 4 + 4 + 1 = 20
LLTWM: 3 + 4 + 6 + 2 + 5 = 20
Ytse: 4 + 1 + 3 + 6 + 2 = 16
Sigz: 2 + 5 + 5 – 4 + 6 = 14
DTVT: 4 + 2 + 2 + 0 + 3 = 11
King: 3 + 4 + 2 – 2 + 4 = 11
Jingle: 2 + 3 + 3 – 6 + 4 = 6

ROUND 6: Mini-epic – I did a round for “epics” in my first roulette, where I asked for long songs that took the listener on a journey. This time, I want the song to feel epic because of the sound and the music, but not because of the length. Send me a song you think feels epic, but is no longer than 7 minutes! Completely open in terms of genre.

Do it!  Nick's, Mason's and my album of the year.  It's a Rock Opera, so you have to listen start to finish to really appreciate.  Took me a couple of spins, but now it's on constant rotation.

Epic, and less than 7 minutes.  hhhmmmm, this is gonna be a challenge.  Nick's 'mini-epic' theme at 8-10 minutes was tough enough.

To clarify, it doesn't need to have multiple varied sections or anything like that - I just want the sound and feel to be epic. So it can be as short as you like within that definition. I also found Nick's hard, but that's because he had a lower limit as well - I had loads of songs I could have sent him below 8 minutes, but not so many within that range!

The song I'd like to send is 7:01

I got slapped nicely for a similar transgression in another roulette.
Im really not all about winning these things, it's more about the music.

Does anyone have a problem with me submitting this song IF Ariich allows it?

Sorry about the slight delay, been very busy with Christmas shopping/socialising, stressing over exam results (which it turns out I passed) and then spending time with a womang.

But hey, at least mine isn't as painfully slow as Nick's!

RESULTS – ROUND 6: Mini-epic
Strong round as always, maybe not as epic as I was expecting, but lots of good music!

6 points: King
This Day & Age – More of a Climb, Less of a Walk
I really, really like this song, somewhat reminds me of a cross between Thrice and Foo Fighters. Nice vibe, good melodies and generally a really good sound! On first listen I wasn’t really getting an “epic” feel from it but actually now I know it better I think it is a pretty big song, and the instrumental bit at the end is amazing. Great submission!

5 points: Sigz
Rosetta – Ayil
This is a pretty intense song, particularly vocally, but it has such a huge sound! I wasn’t sure how much it was my thing on first listen, but it really grew on me a lot. I don’t have anything else to say really, there’s not a lot to this song, I just know I dug it and want to check out more.

4 points: Gorille
Sweet Trip – To All the Dancers of the World, a Round Form of Fantasy
I think I checked out a couple of Sweet Trip tracks a little while ago but wasn’t really feeling it, so I can only assume I just wasn’t in the right mood because this is really cool stuff. Not at all what I was expecting from an epic round, but I can definitely see why you submitted it, as the song really builds up despite its laid back, ambient feel, and the part around 3:45 is just great when listening on headphones with the volume cranked up!

4 points: LieLow
Big Big Train – Last Train
Really nice bit of prog rock this, and again interesting to get a song that mostly has such a laid back vibe in this round, but it has some nice peaks and troughs in the mood, and has a bigger sound in the instrumental that really gives it a bit more energy. They’re not a band I really know anything about, so I’m going to have to check them out now because I really like this song.

3 points: Jingle
Nikki Yanofsky – I Believe
Have to say, when I first listened to this song, I was worried I was going to find it horribly cheesy, because the way it starts is… well, really quite cheesy. But actually I was pleasantly surprised when the song gets going because it’s actually a really nice pop song. As with some of the other submissions, it’s not really what I was thinking of when I asked for epic, but I can see why you sent it, because it gets very grandiose later on in the song. I don’t really follow Winter Olympics at all (I’m British, we suck at them) but I can imagine this song being the perfect opener!

3 points: DTVT
Turisas – To Holmgard and Beyond
I was very sceptical about this song at first, because it struck me as that kind of “battle metal” that I can’t really take seriously. But actually, once I got over that and just took it for what it is – some fun, energetic symphonic metal, I started to enjoy it quite a bit. I still can’t see it being the sort of thing I’d listen to that often, but it’s definitely enjoyable, has a really big sound, and a very, VERY catchy chorus!

2 points: Raven
Sopor Aeternus & The Ensemble Of Shadows – Hades “Pluton”
I have very mixed feelings towards this song – I do actually dig it, but I dunno, something doesn’t really sit that well for me. I think there are just some bits of it that I’m not so keen on. That said, it’s such an unusual and intriguing style, dark and quirky and really kinda cool, and there was enough good stuff that I really want to give a full album a listen. So it hasn’t scored very well this round, but I’m not going to judge the artists until I’ve listened to more of their stuff and at least made an attempt to get my head round it. :lol

1 point: Ytse
Cloudscape – Ritual of the Blade
I feel kinda bad for giving this song only 1 point, as it has some quite nice ideas in it, but I do feel it’s a step below everything as I just found it quite bland. Not bad by any means, but there was just nothing in it that made me think I might want to check out more by these guys – everything sounded like I’d heard it all before many many times. Plus, I couldn’t get past the fact that the start of the chorus sounds like “REACHAROUND”. :P Sorry dude.

The Scores
Raven: 6 + 3 + 5 + 8 + 2 + 2 = 26
Gorille: 5 + 6 + 4 + 4 + 1 + 4 = 24
LLTWM: 3 + 4 + 6 + 2 + 5 + 4 = 24
Sigz: 2 + 5 + 5 – 4 + 6 + 5 = 19
Ytse: 4 + 1 + 3 + 6 + 2 + 1 = 17
King: 3 + 4 + 2 – 2 + 4 + 6 = 17
DTVT: 4 + 2 + 2 + 0 + 3 + 3 = 14
Jingle: 2 + 3 + 3 – 6 + 4 + 3 = 9

ROUND 7: Grand Finale – The opposite of my first round, this time send me something that is the last track of an album! Style is completely open, just send me any closing song that you think I’ll like.

WAGER – as with the middle round, the wager is back to allow everyone a chance to shift their place in the rankings! Once again scoring will be 4, 3, 2, 1, 0, -1, -2 and -3, and the wager is half, normal or double points. ANYTHING COULD HAPPEN!

If I did that it could have influenced how much he wanted to wager. :P However he replied very promptly to my PM, so it's no longer an issue! I would have assumed double, but shockingly not everyone wagered double this time. :o

RESULTS – ROUND 7: Grand Finale
Ok, well, I’m almost but not quite sorry to say that this was probably the strongest round yet, so I’m very, very impressed! I dug every song quite a lot, and so those that scored low, it’s really not because it wasn’t a good submission, merely that I had to choose a ranking and that’s where the song ended up. Where songs have ranked low, I’ve tried to explain why.

Sigz
4 points – wagered double – 8 points
Gregor Samsa – Lessening
This song starts quite slow and a little nothingy, but it really builds in such a majestic way, as only the best post-rock bands can do. It’s also really interesting hearing music that I’d definitely describe as post-rock, but with vocals in a real language (I’m look at you Sigur Ros). Really gorgeous, and the way it ends is so beautiful, I can imagine it being an amazing closing to the album, which I’m definitely going to have to listen to now!

Gorille
3 points – wagered double – 6 points
Frank Turner – Glory Hallelujah
LieLow tried to send this song as well but you got there first, and I can see why you both tried to send it, because it’s really damn catchy! I don’t really know much about Frank Turner, but this song is an interesting folk-punk hybrid with a slightly bluesy edge, that somehow works to create something thoroughly enjoyable and singalongable. Great stuff!

Jingle
2 points – wagered double – 4 points
Gowan – A Criminal Mind
When I listen to this song, part of me insists that I should be finding it overly cheesy and “80s”. But for some reason that I can’t explain, the rest of me really likes the whole vibe of it! The start of the song in particular is a great piano melody. Only slight complaint is that the song never seems to really reach a climax, but that’s a minor thing and probably more due to the production than anything else. Still a really nice song.

LLTWM
1 point – wagered double – 2 points
Gentle Giant – In a Glass House
Some full-on 70s prog here, and I’ve heard of these guys a lot but for some reason never bothered to actually explore their music at all. This is a pretty cool song; some of the stuff earlier on the song is a little sporadic, but it seems to find a groove fairly quickly, and there’s an abundance of neat ideas throughout. And you’re totally right about the riff coming soon after the 4 minute mark, very cool stuff!

Raven
0 points – wagered double – 0 points
Loreena McKennitt – Prospero’s Speech
Very unexpected style for a song roulette, but a very nice song nonetheless! She has a gorgeous classical voice with a slight celtic lilt to it, and the music is very pleasant and creates a fantastic atmosphere. The only slight downside for me is that it’s quite short and doesn’t really go anywhere – she introduces a nice theme, sings it a couple of times, and then that’s it. I really like the style a lot, I just wish there were more of it! I think I’ll have to give an album a listen.

DTVT
-1 point – wagered double – -2 points
Enslaved – Heir to the Cosmic Seed
Got to say, this was a cool song. I’ve heard a bit about Enslaved over the years, but never really been that interested by what I’ve heard to check them out. I was pleasantly surprised though, this song has a great atmosphere to it, I don’t know how the band are usually categorised, but this struck me as having a lot in common with a lot of doom metal – somewhat heavy but quite melancholic as well, at least in the first half or so of the song. Builds up nicely towards the end though. However it suffers from the same problem as some of the other songs this round – lack of any real climax or focus. It’s good stuff though, definitely enough to make me want to check them out now.

Ytse
-2 points – wagered half – -1 point
Dreamscape – You Don’t Know Me
Once again this was a pretty cool song, and I want to reiterate that this coming so low does not mean I didn’t dig it a fair bit, the round was just too strong. It’s a nice bit of straightforward prog metal with plenty of nice ideas and some good melodies. I guess the reason it doesn’t grab me as much as the songs that came above it is that it just seems so familiar – they really do have a DT-lite thing going on. So although it’s nice music, nothing really stood out to me. The album that song is from is on Spotify though, so I’ll probably give it a listen at some point. Interesting that you chose to not take a risk and are the only person to have wagered less than double, but although I like the song, it turns out that was the right call!

King
-3 points – wagered double – -6 points
World Trade – Open the Door
As with the last few songs, I can’t really find anything in particular to fault with this song, it’s a nice enough bit of classic rock with a slightly unusual edge. Quite enjoyable in fact, and with a nice vibe to it. It just had to end up down the bottom here because there was nothing that really grabbed me much, or made me want to check out more by the band. Shame really, after you kicked ass in the last round! :lol

The Scores
Gorille: 5 + 6 + 4 + 4 + 1 + 4 + 6 = 30
Sigz: 2 + 5 + 5 – 4 + 6 + 5 + 8 = 27
---------------------------------------
Raven: 6 + 3 + 5 + 8 + 2 + 2 + 0 = 26
LLTWM: 3 + 4 + 6 + 2 + 5 + 4 + 2 = 26
Ytse: 4 + 1 + 3 + 6 + 2 + 1 – 1 = 16
Jingle: 2 + 3 + 3 – 6 + 4 + 3 + 4 = 13
DTVT: 4 + 2 + 2 + 0 + 3 + 3 – 2 = 12
King: 3 + 4 + 2 – 2 + 4 + 6 – 6 = 11

Well, well, well, things ended up very close both at the top and at the bottom. Spectacular comebacks from both Chad (climbing two places having been bottom for so long) and Ian (leaping up into the top two and therefore into the playoff)! Thanks so much to everyone for playing, every one of you introduced me to something that I want to check out more, which is the main reason I wanted to do another roulette, so cheers! :D

PLAYOFF

GORILLE vs SIGZ
For this final, I want you both to send me THREE songs each. Genre is completely open, but I want the three songs to cover as broad a spectrum of mood and style as possible (I don’t mean each song should cover lots of styles, I mean the three should be as different to each other as possible). If you want and you think it’s suitable, you are allowed to send more than one song by the same artist.

I shall choose a winner based on both how much I like the music AND how different the songs are to each other.

GO!

RESULTS – PLAYOFF
A very cool mix of music here, and you both went for quite different approaches. Results presented of each song individually, mixed up between you both:

Gorille
Röyksopp – Happy Up Here – 7/10
What a fun, groovy song! Nothing special or goundbreaking, but the beat and funky synth bass stuff really get me bopping along. I’ve never been especially inclined to check Röyksopp out properly before but maybe that should change as I dug this quite a bit.

Sigz
Floex – Veronika’s Dream – 9/10
This is such an interesting and engaging song. Great use of acoustic instruments with electronic sounds and textures – I honestly don’t really know how to define this. It’s quite ambient, but pretty busy as well, and makes for such a good listen. I’m going to have to give this guy a listen!

Gorille
The Prescription – Watch the giants fall – 6/10
This is a very enjoyable bit of modern hard rock – they seem to be a very unknown band as they don’t even show up on RYM. It’s a good song but probably the least interesting out of the 6 songs here, as there’s not really much to it – a fun riff and some nice playing, but not a lot else really.

Sigz
Andy Moor & Adam White pres. Whiteroom – The White Room – 7/10
This is some pretty cool trance, I dig electronic music but have never been particularly into the more straightforward trance stuff, as it often gets quite repetitive I find. But this has a good amount of variety and a really nice atmosphere throughout, and after a couple of listens I found myself really getting into it. A little long maybe, but otherwise very nice!

Gorille
Her Name is Calla – Pour More Oil – 10/10
This is an absolutely stunning song! It’s pretty much the epitome of a song building up to a climax – there’s barely any sound in the first half minute but it just gets bigger and bigger and by the end had me totally and utterly hooked. Reminds me a little bit of The Antlers, but it builds more than anything they’ve done!

Sigz
Battle of Mice – At the Base of the Giant’s Throat – 8/10
Jesus this song is intense. Easily one of the most fiercely upsetting songs I’ve ever heard, and from your explanation of the real situation going on in the band at the time, the ending is genuinely uncomfortable to listen to, which did detract from it just a little. That said, it’s powerful and angry and really very interesting in the way it changes and builds.

AND FINALLY – how much variety there was:

Sigz – 9/10
Really good mix of moods here, I held back from 10/10 simply because two of the songs had quite a big electronic element, but the vibe in each song was completely different, ranging from ambient through fun right up to very, very intense.

Gorille – 8/10
Very good variety as well, three very different musical styles, but not quite as much variety in tone as Ian had. The Röyksopp and Prescription songs were both fairly fun and energetic.

-----------------------------------
And so the final scores:
Sigz 33
Gorille 31
-----------------------------------

It was close, but Ian takes the win! You both sent so much great music throughout the roulette though, so thank you for taking part!

AWARDS CEREMONY

Most efficient:
Gorille – always sent songs first, often almost immediately!

Music I’ve become most obsessed by:
A tie between Caravan Palace (Sigz) and Moon Safari (LieLow)

Most inconsistent:
Kingshmegland – for his ability to come top one round and then bottom the very next.

Most prog:
A tie between DTVT and Ytse

Best comeback:
A tie between Jingle and Sigz, both of which happened in the last round.

Most depressing:
Raven, although Sigz came close with that Battle of Mice song in the final.

Most best:
Sigz, for actually winning the damn thing!

Yeah on my first listen I listened to the whole ending, but on subsequent listens I honestly couldn't sit through the whole thing and ended up chickening out early. Some of the music earlier on is fantastic though, and even with the ending, the fact that it evokes such an intense emotion in me is no bad thing.

Glad you enjoyed the roulette, and yeah I'll definitely check out the Floex album!
