Well, here we are and I am personally very excited to be doing this. I'm hoping to discover some great new music. I remember someone wondering how, if I don't have a last.fm people would know what I have and don't. Well here is what I'd suggest. Go to https://www.wpapu.com/Setlists.html and use a ctrl+f search feature to see if a band has been played on my show. However keep the following in mind.
1. At the bottom of the page there are links to prior years, and you would do well to quickly search those as well.
2. In the current year I've been letting people do guest blocks, and if an artist is in one and nowhere else chances are I've only heard that song by the artist.
Onto scoring. There are 8 of you and I have decided I will grade all songs between 1 and 10 points without repeating any numbers. This means if I think a round is particularly strong I will score between 3 and 10, really weak, 1 through 8, or possibly use 1 and 10 and put a break wherever I see a quality drop etc.
I will always send out a PM and submissions should be in within 48 hours of that initial PM.
There shall be 6-8 rounds, and shall make that determination after a few rounds.
So, here we go!
This first round is called First Impressions and here is how it'll work. I'm going to wait till everyone has their song sent line them up and listen to them exactly 1 time before ranking them all. I will keep listening to comment on the songs but their point value will be assessed after that very first listen. I ask for this round that songs be kept under 7 minutes in length.
Good luck to the following:
Ariich
(x) Perpetual Change
Wolfking
(x) YtseBitsySpider
(x) DTVT
(x) Ravenheart
(x) Jingle.Boy
(x) Clairvoyant Cat

Cool. Sending now. I like how you're doing rounds. I wish I would have stuff with having clear winners/losers in all my roulette's rounds. Makes things much more interesting that way.
-
Le sent.

Gee thanks Nem. :blush I appreciate the support.
Nick, are you looking to this roulette for band discovery, for fun, or just to listen to some good tunes? I ask, because if it's for discovering new bands, I'll stay away from one-hit wonders. If it's for fun/good tunes, then I might throw you a great song from a so-so band.

I'm open to either. :)
-
Looking forward to participating in this. So hard to decide what to send.
-
This is quite difficult for me, as looking at Nick's playlists is basically everything I listen to. :lol
-
And wolfie, it's hightly likely he's heard it already.
this will be a toughy
I'll send mine tonight.
-
This should be an interesting roulette. I'll follow it.
-
this will be a toughy
Tough given the competitors too!!!
P.S. I was joking Nem. My guess is you're rooting for Z to be a repeat champ, or Rich to be a Euro champ.

Exactly, that's the difficult part. I'll be sending mine tonight too.

I'm rooting for the best man to win. :D

Sent. Boy I hope it's a new track for you.

That's a big across the board yes. Haven't listened yet of course, but I look forward it it and the other submissions so far. :)

Argh been so busy this week, and need to go to bed now, but promise will send a song tomorrow, and thus within your 48 hour limit! :)

Sending.

Damn Brits! ;)
-
Woah, shit, I had no idea I was in this.
I am amazingly busy right now, but I'm going to try and make this work. Sending later tonight, hopefully!
-
Song sent.
-
I have about 8 to ten bands I've never seen you play or talk about, so hopefully the rounds work out in my favor. Plus I have a few "go to" bands that I use in roulettes.
No doubt I'll lose to Raven again.
-
Everyone is in! Except Rich.
Everyone throw stones at the Brit please.
-
Fucking Australians.

Fucking Australians.
Ariich is a criminal?

Fucking Australians.
Ariich is a criminal?
Yes, he stole my heart.
-
oh dear god.... roulettes are fun...
-
I think so.
If Nick has fun, he'll climb to the next tier on the mountain and tell bosk to run one.
-
I'd be so in.
-
Fucking Australians.
:'(
-
lol I love how SIRI had to be patched on iPhone 4s because she couldn't understand Australians. She had no problem with new zealanders funny enough.

Right I've got a couple of ideas, but before I pick one, I'm assuming from your edit that there's no longer the requirement for entries to be mp3s? A lot of my listening is on Spotify, and so requiring mp3s would severely limit what I can send.
And if so, what sorts of link would you prefer? Spotify? Grooveshark?

I would prefer not to get links unless completely necessary.
All submissions are in and I'm listening now for ranking purposes.

Need to listen more throughout the evening to write some more, but point rankings will be as follows:
9,8,7,6,5,4,2,1

Ytse: Dreamscape - You Don't Know Me (1 pt)
Unfortunately this song automatically gets dropped to the bottom of the pile for not following the guidelines. A small timing error, but hopefully this makes people keep up with the rules in future rounds, especially any specific rules on song length. That aside I didn't find the track particularly good to begin with. I know Ytse knows I like the more generic progressive metal more than most, but knowing the genre as well as I do it makes it tough for a song from that core to leave as much of an impact on me.
Seth: Jaga Jazzist - Oslo Skyline (6 pt)
Really enjoyed the soothing edge to this song. Even when it picks up it manages to keep a bit of a peaceful edge with the background instrumentation. I think it was pretty bold to go without a singer for this round, but this track was still a pretty good choice.
Joe: Karnivool - Change (2 pt)
Another song that gets dropped to the bottom, this time for going nearly 4 minutes over the limit. Kinda felt shades of a few bands I've listened to in this, especially Kaddisfly at certain points. The song has a certain safeness to it throughout the song, enjoyable all the while but lacking any clear great punches.
Zander: Nightengale - The Dreamreader (5 pt)
Definitely like the aggressive groove out of the gate. Song manages to continue with new parts and hooks at a steady tempo through the first 3 minutes or so. The short instrumental break is good but a definite divot in the song I think. And after that the song gets slightly better but never quite comes back to the awesomeness that was the beginning of the song.
Rich: Petter Carlson - Spirits in Need (4 pt)
This was a decent song that, like Karnivool, just lacked very much punch. I can once again here hints of artists I enjoy in this, but in general it failed to really do that much for me. Can’t point to much I didn’t like, but also can’t point to much that I loved.
Wolf: Sieges Even - Tidal (9 pt)
Siges Even is a band I had meant to check out over the years but never ended up getting a CD by. Most easily compared to the Dreamscape track I'd say this blew that out of the water. I like how it starts with great melodies and then reduces to the simple guitar pattern and builds back up. A far more familiar sound for me than many other submissions and yet this managed to stand out quite well.
Jingle: Triumph - Headed for Nowhere (7 pt)
I've heard a handful or Triumph songs and have enjoyed what I've heard. Though this song may not stand the test of time compared to some songs ranked below it, the vocal melodies and clear chorus hooks definitely help it stand out on first listen.
DTVT: Xen - She Plays (8 pt)
Mason plays it safe as he sends me something with a vocalist he knows I really like, Ted Leonard of Enchant. A lot of the Enchant sound is present and Ted does a fantastic job with the vocals. But this song brings far more than familiarity, it also brings the awesome which is why it caught my ear and got ranked so highly.
Wolf: 9
DTVT: 8
Jingle: 7
Seth: 6
Raven: 5
Knob: 4
Commie: 2
SmallArachnid: 1

Round 2: The Race Card
If you guys have a collection like mine it's entirely possibly this round might be a bit difficult for you. When it comes to people of African descent in my music I can think of two bands, Threshold and Steel Prophet. That's it. So your job in this round is simple, send me a track that features a black guy. Please keep tracks under 8 minutes.
-
BOOYAH!!!!
Awesome. I had a few ideas regarding what to send, but this song kept popping back into my head. Glad you liked it Nick. Sieges Even have really evolved over the years. I love their last two albums the most. Tidal is from their last album Paramount. This probably is the best song on the album, but the whole album is filled with great playing and atmoshpere and some terrific melodies. Their album before Navigating By The Stars is tremendous also.
I'll probably fail miserably every round from now on. :lol

Damn, Threshold immediately would have been the band I would have sent. :lol Time to get thinking.
-
Glad you liked it. I figured that opening riff would catch your interest
Congrats wolf.
Will send tomorrow morning when I'm back home and can send mp3s. Have some thoughts already. Do you mean black singer, or does it matter if he's just on an instrument?
-
Any instrument is fine.
-
I know EXACTLY what I'm sending when I get home.

I have no idea.

I second Sieges Even. I can't get enough of the last 2 studio albums.

Indeed, both are equally brilliant.
-
Eek 1 ......7:01.....one second over tough
judging.
-
If it's really one second over...that's kind of lame, particularly if it's a blank second at the beginning or end.
-
Man Nick was well harsh on Ytse. :lol THAT'LL TEACH YOU TO IGNORE THE RULES!
-
If it's really one second over...that's kind of lame, particularly if it's a blank second at the beginning or end.
I concur, but it is nick's roulette. Now we know, follow the rules or face the consequences.
-
As much as I dearly love Nick, his lack of mercy does not surprise me at all. :lol
-
Im actually more bummed he didn't like the band.
They're a watered down dream theater, great piano work, some good euro vocal accent, crunchy guitar, right up his alley...or so I thought.
-
YBS, your description sounds like the band in this thread (https://www.dreamtheaterforums.org/boards/index.php?topic=29544.0). Have you listened to them (or anyone esle in the thread? I bought the album based on what I heard).

I've never checked out Dreamscape, sounds right up my alley.

No, but I will now check it out since you are digging it.
-
Sucks Nick doesn't like Karnivool, though I kinda feel I may have sent the wrong song. "Deadman" would have been better than "Change".
Oh well. Plowing forward with the next track.
-
Deadman is also double the time limit.
-
I know :( I didn't even read that part.
Well, just sent Nick something I'm sure he will hate :P

Surprised Nick didn't mention the musical similarities to Rush in the instrumental break of "Tidal," especially dat bass. Sounds so much like Geddy.

I shall have to re-listen.
As for the scoring on Ytse, it was technically 2 seconds over as I said songs should be under 7 minutes, meaning no greater than 6:59.59, but it doesn't matter either way. I didn't want to let it go this round only to have someone go 5 or 10 seconds over later and then complain, either gotta keep to the rule or not have it at all. In any case I don't think the song would have gotten more than 2 or 3 points anyway so it was a good time to make the mistake.
-
I sent a black man beating a drum.

Good observation, quite Rush indeed. Oliver is such a fucking amazing bass player.

I will check out that thread and that band.
I thought Nick had long known and enjoyed Karnivool.
Deadman, and Change are fantastic tunes.
The challenge for me in this roulette is finding stuff he hasn't heard. His collection of music eclipses mine probably 4 or 5 fold. But, perhaps some instructions to Nick, as this is his first roulette.
The purpose of game is to introduce to music you may not have heard before. You may not like it, you may hate it, you may love. The most important part is to keep an open mind in your reviewing.
This is why I haven't run my own yet. I don't have an open mind "right now". I'm very opposed to anything with any kind of wishy washy, weak whiny vocal sound. Im into harsh brutal up tempo power.
-
Holy schneiky did I just take the mother of all risks with my submission.
The challenge for me in this roulette is finding stuff he hasn't heard.
On this, I agree... and believe I am in the same predicament.
The purpose of game is to introduce to music you may not have heard before.
Agreed, but it doesn't necessarily need to be a whole different style or genre diverging from one's core tastes. Given the group here, we're mostly prog/rock enthusiasts. Seth and Z probably are more radical than you, Mason, Wolf or I (from what I can tell from previous roulette's and top 50s). Given our tastes, maybe that's all that Nick wants ... to get exposure deeper into prog/rock. Who knows?
Or maybe I'm just nutty from a little jet-lag and only 1 cup of coffee so far this morning.
-
It's hard to actually decide what to send each time as usually there are so many options. And I also wonder what you guys might send and how my picks might stack up. And you guys are right, it's difficult to know what Nick is actually looking for. He might want something different or he might want more of the same. I guess that's why he chose us, he knows he'll get a broad spectrum. Maybe he has no preference what he wants, he might just want new music, no matter what it is.
Also, song for round 2 has been sent. Not sure about this one.
-
well...I believe he's not big into screamers or hard core thrashy metal.
So.
I sent him some Killswitch Engage.
Who's singer....I think is black.
-
He sure is. Howard Jones. Fucking great singer.
-
I don't think Nick isn't against thrash metal, but growls are a definite no-no for him. I kind of lucked into my choice as I wasn't really aware the main guy was black until last week, and my second choice would have done well too I believe, although I thought I might get dinged for making another safe choice.
-
Sent'd.
-
I don't think Nick isn't against thrash metal, but growls are a definite no-no for him.
Depends on the context of the song I suppose. Rage of Despair is all about the growl/screams; Dan Swano does some good growling on both Star One discs too. And we know how he feels about those albums
I'm not a fan of scream/growls either, but they have their place/moments.
-
First off, Seth is holding everything up now!
As for musical exploration. Yes, I'm hoping to get some stuff I haven't heard before and expand my musical grounds. HOWEVER. I warn you now that the farther you move away from my usual stuff the less of a chance it has. This isn't from not having an open mind, it's just that if I had found other stuff was more interesting to me I obviously would have moved that direction more already. I generally don't like growls or screams but I have a round that is themed around that coming up, perhaps even next.
At the end of the day it really is a toss up, something you think it really good but that I'll also enjoy.
-

While I listen to a slightly wider range of music (I'm not opposed to growling if it works / is done right), I love this statement.

ah crap. Me = screwed.
-
Are we waiting on Rapekins or Nick?
-
Still waiting on Seth.

Sorry, I'm busy as all fuck this weekend, but things will clear up right afterward. Sent.
-
Sweet, I'll try and have things updated tonight.

Raven: Alice in Chains – Your Decision (4 pt)
HERE THEY COME TO SNUFF THE ROOSTER!!! Sorry, had to get that out of my system. Song pretty much sounds like what I’ve come to expect from Alice in Chains and as such was enjoyable to me but nothing out of the ordinary.
DTVT: Animals as Leaders – Isolated Incidents (7 pt)
Some instrumental goodness right here. Kinda went outside the bounds of other instrumental music I have for the most part. I like how well layered it is, and how the mind is focused on everything easily even when there is a clear lead part, you manage to hear it but easily access the full picture as well.
Rich: Animals as Leaders – Song of Solomon (6 pt)
They say great minds think alike. Apparently so do the minds of Mason and Rich. I prefer the previous AsL track because this one doesn’t seem to breathe as well, a tad too busy. Still manages to be a pretty kickass instrumental track, but perhaps a few figurative knobs were turned to 11 when they did not have to be.
JB: Artists Against Apartheid – Sun City (1 pt)
JB wasn’t kidding when he said he was taking a shot with this one. The message of the song is certainly a good one, but this quite simply sounds like a genre that shouldn’t be on the Disney Channel twisted so it could be on the Disney Channel. The song certainly could have appeal to certain groups, but I’m just not in that group.
Seth: Enter the Hunt – Alone (9 pt)
There are times that this song reminds me of why I love Anathema. Perhaps a bit heavier than typical Anathema, but there is a certain edge to the song that just goes straight to my heart. Song isn’t very diverse, beat never really varies, but I can’t help just loving the melodies from start to finish on this one. Production seems a tad lacking, but that’s about my only complaint.
PC: Kanye West – Slow Jams (2 pt)
Well this was certainly… interesting. Admittedly my knowledge of Kanye ends at his popular meme and South Park’s amazing episode about him, and after this I feel that I can crawl happily back into that bubble. I’m not going to say there weren’t things to like about this song, but they were hard to find amongst a lot of stuff that I simply didn’t enjoy.
YBS: Killswitch Engage – My Curse (5 pt)
I think this would be one hell of a workout song. Love the instrumental intro prior to the vocals, and generally the parts with clean vocals I really enjoyed. And I certainly dug a lot of the energy behind the sections with some screaming, but as is often the case I think the screaming was used too liberally. The guitar work in parts of the song really reminds me of Scale the Summit.
Wolf: The Mob – One Track Mind (8 pt)
This helped me remember another band in my arsenal I actually know with a black dude, King’s X. Doug Pinnick seems to bring some of the best grooviness from King’s X to this side-project track. As with King’s X I can really imagine this being quite awesome live, and as is I find it to be quite an awesome track.
Updated Standings
King: 9+8 = 17
Chemmie: 8+7 = 15
Dethklok10: 6+9 = 15
Bad Teeth: 4+6 = 10
Zander: 5+4 = 9
Kim Jong Il: 7+1 = 8
Spidey: 1+5 = 6
Tingle: 2+2 = 4
-
Wow now Tony MacAlpine........
-
As a little side game for this next round, along with your submission I ask you to pick a number between 1 and 8. Basically you've all been assigned a random number. If you pick your own number you get 3 bonus points. If you pick the mirror of your number (1/8, 2/7, 3/6, 4/5), then that person gets 2 bonus points. If you pick any of the other 6 possibly numbers that person loses a point.
Round 3: Grow(l) on Me
It's not huge secret I generally don't like growling or screaming. However there are some exceptions. I believe that they can be used sparingly very effectively. Examples include a lot of Amorphis material, some Riverside songs, some Ayreon and even a few tracks on the new James LaBrie album. My point is that is small amounts, used as a proper accent to clean vocals I think that harsh vocals can really improve a song. Now I don't actually expect a lot of growling to grow on me, but I hope we can expand the amount of bands I'm familiar with that can use it well in songs. If a song is over half growling or screaming it's automatically going to get dropped to the bottom, that's not what I'm looking for. I would like songs with mostly clean vocals with some harsh vocals used well. Please keep submissions under 6 minutes for this.
-
Wow now Tony MacAlpine........
T-Mac was the first guy I thought of, but I didn't think any of his work would be instantly accessable to Nick. Thought of Ring of Fire, but I knew the Mob would give me more points.
-
I thought about Tony MacAlpine, and as much as I like his Maximum Security album, I thought Nick would appriciate the fuller sound of Animals as Leaders; also I had played a T-Mac song during one of my guest blocks, figured I'd send something new to Nick. Looks like I was right about that.
I got ideas for this round, I'll have to think about them tomorrow.
-
I have a feeling a few of us might be on to the same line of bands for this next round. I'm actually finding it hard to find songs that are less than 50/50 or in the growls.
Nick, what happens if two of us happen to pick the same band, is that allowed?
-
Nick, what happens if two of us happen to pick the same band, is that allowed?
Clearly, since Animals as leaders showed up twice last round.
Guess I shoulda stuck with Prince.
I know exactly I have no idea what I'm sending. Hopefully it's not Now that my first choice is already in your arsenal.
-
If two people send the same song then whoever sent first gets to use it, however if you happen to pick the same artist that is fine.
-
That six minute thing is killing me. I had three songs I wanted to send, but they were all between 6 and 7 minutes. I know what I'm sending now, just have to get home to do so.
Speaking of which, from Thursday thru Sunday I won't be able to send anything unless a link is good enough, as I will be out of town for the holiday.

I'll likely allow the next round to go a good while because of the holiday, no worries.
-
The halfgrowls/half clean thing killed me, as well as the under 6 minute thing. But I think I still managed to send out something very good.
-
It doesn't even have to approach half and half, the song can have very minimum growling and still be acceptable.
-
Hahaha, no. I could have sent something far better with ALL growls/harsh vocals. What I wound up sending barely has growls at all... they're just kinda like there for flavoring.
-

Perfect, though I never actually received an email with you with the song, just the number you wanted.
-
Let me get this straight: NO ONE sent Living Colour, Abstract in the Sky (Volk's stuff) or King's X last round? I am disappoint, DTF.
-
Nick has King's X.
-

And Living Colour. That was my first choice out of the gate, but he has it.
-
Took a while to think of something that fit all the criteria, but I'm pretty happy with what I've sent!
-
5 people have submitted so far, and of those 1 has picked their own number for 3 bonus points, 1 has picked their mirror and given a competitor 2 bonus points, 2 have knocked a point off of a competitor, and Rich has failed miserably at the whole number thing.
-
:lol
My song is sent!
-
Not quite sure how I feel about the number picking thing. I'd rather win or lose on my own merits.
-
Oh yeah. :lol
It's because the number thing was so random and has nothing to do with our submissions, I forgot about it. :P
EDIT: Right, follow up email sent.
-

It's an interesting idea, but I tend to agree with you. It taints the competition a little IMO, although no disrespect to Nick, it's his game and this is the way we play, so it's cool.
-
Almost any game you can possibly play has an element of luck to go along with the element of skill/strategy. ;)
-
Yeah but usually there's a link between the two.
I like the idea of adding an element of random luck into the mix, some of orcus' rounds were quite cool, so I might do something similar in one of my rounds. But this round is just a normal round with PICK A RANDOM NUMBER AND GET A RANDOM NUMBER OF POINTS tacked on. :P

Well I generally don't see these as a competition but as a way of getting the Roulette-ee some new music.
Numbers, no numbers, whatever.

Doesn't everyone?

Jesus doesn't.

Likelihood of getting a pre-turkey update is ??
-
no rush...maybe arich should let more roulettes go at the same time...
-
that'd be nice... I missed that excitement... ::)
-
I'm more excited to see what everyone else has picked for Nick this round. I'm looking to widen my range of bands which incorporate good use of clean singing and growls.
-
I don't mind spoiling my own.
I went with Solution .45 and in my opinion one of the milder songs on that disc.
He asked for growls..but hardly any..and used in appropriate situations.
I think I got near what he asked for.
-
Yeah I'm happy to reveal what I sent but I'd rather know that all songs are actually in first!

I knew you would have went for Solution .45. :) I was gonna go for something like Gravitational Lensing myself, but thought it might have been a bit too much for Nick. My option is actually pretty safe, and I'm sort of regretting it now. Not the band of choice, but the song.

Don't worry, I got it in right after I posted that.

Just got the final song and I'll try and do the write ups tonight, but for now here is how the bonus points worked out.
1. Ariich: Voted for 6, costing DTVT 1 point.
2. Perpetual Change: Voted for 5, costing Cat 1 point.
3. Ravenheart: Voted for 4, costing Ytse 1 point.
4. Ytse: Voted for 5, gaining Cat 2 points.
5. Clairvoyant Cat: Voted for 2, costing Perpetual 1 point.
6. DTVT: Voted for 6, gaining DTVT 3 points.
7. Wolf: Voted for 8, costing Jingle 1 point.
8. Jingle: Voted for 6, costing DTVT 1 point.
Wolf: 9+8+0 = 17
Mason: 8+7+1 = 16
Rapkins: 6+9+1 = 16
Brit: 4+6+0 = 10
Hair: 5+4+0 = 9
Puppet: 7+1-1 = 7
Ytse: 1+5-1 = 5
Joseph: 2+2-1 = 3
-
Damn! 7 was the first number that came to mind, but then 8 kept creeping into my subconscious.
Don't want to intentionally cut points off myself Nick, but shouldn't my score be 16?
-
1. Ariich: Voted for 6, costing him 1 point.
2. Perpetual Change: Voted for 5, costing him 1 point.
3. Ravenheart: Voted for 4, costing him 1 point.
4. Ytse: Voted for 5, gaining him 2 points.
5. Clairvoyant Cat: Voted for 2, costing him 1 point.
6. DTVT: Voted for 6, gaining himself 3 points.
7. Wolf: Voted for 8, costing him 1 point.
8. Jingle: Voted for 6, costing him 1 point.
Using the pronoun "him" is confusing as fuck when there are 8 "him's".
THEN WHO WAS PHONE?!?
-

Nope, no one picked your number so you stay at 17.

8. Jingle: Voted for 6, costing him 1 point.
Using the pronoun "him" is confusing as fuck when there are 8 "him's", and none of us are defined by a number (except me and YBS, 6 and 4 respecively).
THEN WHO WAS PHONE?!?
Um, the number is the first part of each line.
-
:(
-
I can see how wolkfing was confused though. "Him" technically refers to himself in each case.
-
I'm as confused as a lesbian in a fish market.
Because Wolf guessed 8, it wasn't his number, I lost a point? An because Rich, Mason and I guessed 6, Mason is only +1 (3-1-1)?
Damn, I totally mis-read the rules. Carry on.
-
Wow, I'm confused as hell too, I don't think I read the rules carefully either.
-
Sorry, I edited my last update to help eliminate confusion.
-
Dang, I was hoping you'd have the next round up before I leave for the holiday.
-
I think I may send that Maroon 5 "jagger" song next round...it's as catchy as fuck.

Jingle: After Forever – Withering Time (1 pt)
Well, it says something when a song has growls and that’s not what offends my ears most. The operatic vocals on this track just kill it for me, and musically speaking I found it to be a take it or leave it track. I did like how the growls were used to back up the clean vocals at parts.
Joe: Cynic - Intergral Birth (2 pt)
I know a large number of users here love this band, but judging by this song I really can’t see why. A musical improvement over the After Forever I thought, but once again the non-growl vocals managed to tick me off for a good portion of the song. When the singing turns decent I started really getting into it, and the instrumental bit that follows threw off a nice Coheed vibe to me.
Zander: Eternal Tears of Sorrow - Sea of Whispers (9 pt)
This is a pretty beautifully crafted song here. There is a great little guitar solo, a nice deep and enjoyable vocalist with lush melodies and piano/synth throughout. Zander was smart to go with next to no growls, and I did appreciate the way in which the minimal growls were used.
Seth: Intronaut – Sunderance (6 pt)
Well here is an interesting track. Musically it seems to go a couple different directions and it was a little difficult wrapping my head around the track at first. Short and at times peaceful and yet there seems to always be a lot going on. I don’t think the growls on the track were necessary, but they were minimal enough to not detract from my enjoyment of the song.
Wolf: Scar Symmetry - Domination Agenda (4 pt)
Love the use of the growls behind the clean vocals even if it was perhaps unneeded. It’s a pretty driving song from start to finish with some good melodies, a nice guitar solo and only one section that really pissed me off.
Ytse: Solution 45 - Into Shadow (5 pt)
Enjoyed this song a good bit for the most part. I can’t really point to much that I thought was exceptional, but overall the song was just refreshing to listen to for some reason. The exception basically goes to the growls in the song which I found completely out of place.
DTVT: Turisas - Take the Day (7 pt)
Musically I really loved this song for the most part, and the intro seemed like it was written for a pretty epic song, and in a way the song lives up to that. Some vocals I was more fond of than others, and I thought the growls in this song were used quite well.
Rich: Wolverine - Towards Loss (3 pt)
Well, any submission that reminds me of Hugh Jackman has to be a good one <3. Homoerotic tendencies aside (any coincidence Rich submitted this?), I was really impressed with this song musically, but as with many songs in this round my disappointment came with vocals, and not necessarily the growls. There are times at the song I can barely hear the nicer clean vocals because the growls are dominating the mix while an effect intentionally buries the clean stuff. The latter bit of this song is pretty great though.
Mason: 8+7+1+7 = 23
Rapkins: 6+9+1+6 = 22
Wolf: 9+8+0+4 = 21
Hair: 5+4+0+9 = 18
Brit: 4+6+0+3 = 13
Ytse: 1+5-1+5 = 10
Puppet: 7+1-1+1 = 8
Joseph: 2+2-1+2 = 5
-
I'm going to start calling Joe "Two-point Tingle."
-
:lol I like.
-
Never heard of Eternal Tears of Sorrow. I'll check them out. DTVT has stolen the lead. :)

No kidding... when Floor Jansen is the vocals he doesn't like ... :omg: Well, I knew I was gonna be hard pressed that round anyway - I only had two growlie bands in my discography that Nick doesn't know, and Trivium is > 50% growls. So, I was kinda pinned into going with After Forever. But I thought with Floor taking the mic, I'd do a little better than dead last. Just goes to show I suck when constrained by a theme.
*hopes for open round*
Edit: Nick, don't give up on After Forever... most of their best songs are non-screamy.
-
I have 3 choices for next round. Next person to post respond with A, B, or C and you will have picked the next theme.
-
C
-
Next round's theme is quite simple. You all likely know that my favorite band is Rush, and yet I don't listen to many 3-piece bands. Off the top of my head I enjoy King's X and ZZ Top to some degree, but even those bands I'm not overly familiar with. So this round you shall all send me some more music from 3 piece artists.
Edit: Also a 6 minute time limit.
-
Oh dear?! :mehlin
-
I'm going to start calling Joe "Two-point Tingle."
lol.
Yeah, I pretty much give up :P
-
Forgot about Muse, who I love, so don't bother sending them.
-
*God dammit... blew my 3-piece load with Triumph in Round 1*
*searches catalogue ...*
*Wonder if I can submit something from Van Halen III and pretend Gary Cherone isn't there*
*would like to submit Take Off Eh! (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1BFPt001PYU)*
*finds suitable choices*
*Submits*

Edit: Nick, don't give up on After Forever... most of their best songs are non-screamy.
I saw Floor last year in London... She was supporting Epica with her new band ReVamp.... She is a Goddess :heart
-
ya....so much for Triumph for me too.....it will now be obscure and pretentious.
-
lol... for a second I thought that you were talking about me :p
-
lol.....I have a whole bunch of other words to describe you.
I have it whittled down to two songs.
-
looking forward to hearing it all....

I would never kick you out. :eyebrows:

YAY!... I was counting on that Nick :eyebrows:
-
Sent. Let's go ladies!
Determined not to be the runt this time.
-
Sorry I'm dickin around......will send soon
-
I can't send until Sunday night at the earliest, Monday night more realistic.
-
sent, went with fun over fusion
-
Sent mine yesterday.
-
SENT
-
Mason... send a link to keep this thing moving.
-
Sent. I took a chance by going non-prog, non-metal; but I love my choice of band and song.
-
Seth... you holding this up again?
-
We just had a holiday, thats enough of a reason for a slow round. Even if I was the last to send it, Nick probably can't listen at work, then he has his radio show tonight...tomorrow night is a reasonable timeframe for results.
-
Well, thanks to 3 deaths during the day I'm still at work. Bad news is no radio show tonight because of that, good news is I might update this when I get home. If not then tomorrow night.
-
I guess when death is your business, business is good today.
Bummer, I was lookin forward to the show.
-
Yeah, just getting home now. Not only did we have the three deaths but we had two funerals going today, one of which I was running. So most of us couldn't put anything more time than necessary in with the bodies and new families until the two funerals were over, long freaking day.
-
Killer day even.
-
Killer day even.

ba-dump... ccchhhhhhiii

First off let me just say this was the strongest round to date. I enjoyed each and every song a good bit and as such have not given anything 1 point. There was a wide range of music sent and I thought highly of the mix.
DTVT: Ben Folds Five – Song for the Dumped (2 pt)
Kinda like the general joyous atmosphere of this song despite the lyrical content that isn’t exactly about a cheery subject. Definitely has a Transatlantic edge as far as that happy go lucky sound is concerned (and yes, I realize that’s probably more a Beatles thing, I just don’t care about the Beatles). However the song is kinda a hodge podge mess it seems, and very poorly engineered. I definitely appreciate the sound and enjoyed the song but this was nothing spectacular.
PC: Ben Folds Five – Video (3 pt)
Two point Tingle also sent along some BFF (fun fact, Tingle’s BFF is his imaginary friend Biff) and this song sounded as mediocre as the last, but was more cohesive and I enjoyed it a tad more. Piano definitely does a nice job throughout.
Wolf: Communic – Flood River Blood (4 pt)
Killer opening to this song, and it generally stays pretty solid throughout. Not sure if I’m feeling the vocalist all that much, and like the previous two songs this one seems to suffer a bit from sub-par sound, but the advantage is that the aggression of this song is better suited for the lower sound quality.
Ytse: Magic Elf – Scrambledeggs (10 pt)
I was surprised when Ytse had failed to hit a high ranked song up until this point, but here it finally is. A pretty interesting instrumental to say the least. I don’t know how well the acoustic guitar noodling goodness would sit with me over time, but thankfully that’s not an issue for this here roulette. Highly entertaining and flamboyant the song definitely is a fun listen.
Zander: Placebo – Sleeping with Ghosts (9 pt)
When I listen to this song I really feel as if we’ve gotten into pure Zander material. I really enjoyed the atmosphere the song creates and very much liked the electronic influences within the song. The vocals added nicely to the song even if by themselves they might not have been much. In that respect I see the vocal approach within the song as a more atmospheric OSI or something. I know a bit of a stretch, but hopefully somebody gets what I’m saying.
Seth: The Antlers - Every Night my Teeth are Falling Out (8 pt)
Throughout every round it seems I get a band that reminds me of Three and this is that submission for this round. And that’s definitely a good thing. I have probably criticized vocals a lot more than other things so far, and while one might expect me to say bad things about this singer I really enjoy him, just as I do Eppard from Three.
Rich: The Aristocrats - Bad Asteroid (5 pt)
Instrumental submission #2 has a nice flow (much like On the Sunday of Life, and unlike In Absentia) and is a great kick back and enjoy track. However that smoothness might also be the tracks undoing in a game such as this. It just didn’t stand out as strongly as many other tracks.
Jingle: The Tea Party - Fire in the Head (6 pt)
A Canadian Trio? What the fuck good can come of this shit? This song features some stellar little musical builds. At 1:27 and 2:01 come musical moments that were amongst my favorite in the round. The little industrial edge to the guitar in parts was cool and in general this was just a pretty interesting song for me.
Rapkins: 6+9+1+6+8 = 30
Hair: 5+4+0+9+9 = 27
Mason: 8+7+1+7+2 = 25
Wolf: 9+8+0+4+4 = 25
Ytse: 1+5-1+5+10 = 20
Brit: 4+6+0+3+5 = 18
Puppet: 7+1-1+1+6 = 14
Joseph: 2+2-1+2+3 = 8
-
Canadian trio's, apparently that's a good hook for you. Tea Party has a bit of a feel of The Doors (who can be polarizing), so I'm glad you liked it.
-

The Tea Party is awesome.

I was almost going to send this song.
Such an amazing band, I was going for this, Psycopomp or The River, but went in totally the opposite direction at the last minute. Tea Party is fucking amazing.
-
Ok.... so round 5 theme?
-
When I get home...
-
BEN FOLDS THAT LOW NICK?!?! WHAT THE FLAGNAR!!!!
-
BEN FOLDS THAT LOW NICK?!?! WHAT THE FLAGNAR!!!!
Well, technically he enjoyed both Folds songs so all hope is not lost. There still a chance to make a Ben Folds fan out of him yet!
-
Yeah, he just liked them the least.
Wonder where he slept last night? He must not have made it home, otherwise we'd have round 5 theme.
-
I was home, but an unnamed assailant kept distracting me. :p
In any case it's time for round 5, the fifth of eight as I have quite enjoyed this.
Round 5: Nearly Epic
The rules for this round are simple. Most epic songs are 10+ minutes, but what I would like is songs that are 8-10 minutes in length, but still have that epic feel. Many songs of that length feel simply like long songs, and if they feel that way to me they shall probably receive lower scores, however if they pull of that grandiose feel in that relatively short time then you shall have hit it right.
-
hhhmmmm.... this could take a while to listen through, and find the right song. I have one in mind, but (as I round in Rich's roulette), I may end up finding something better.
-
I know exactly what I'm sending. I've been waiting to send it for awhile. :millahhhh
-
Just so we're all sure.... it's PRECISELY between 8:00 and 10:00 in length?
-
Cent
-

Hmmm....a tricky round. This could few days to submit considering the subject of the round plus the weekend (it's Saturday morning here for me.)
-
Just so we're all sure.... it's PRECISELY between 8:00 and 10:00 in length?
Yes.
Inclusive or exclusive?
:neverusethis:

song chosen, will send later...one of my staple go to bands
-
I think this is appropriate:
-
I might need my version of this.......
no no promise.... I'll be open-minded... but definitely have the inclination....
-
Nick, are we allowed to send a song from a band that we have already used in a previous round?
Actually, it doesn't matter now, I changed my mind. I have a couple of songs I am looking at but having trouble deciding.
-
For the future, yes, you can send a same band.
-
I've been so busy the last couple of days, I'll send my song tomorrow Nick. Am I the only one you are waiting on Nick?
-
I've been so busy the last couple of days, I'll send my song tomorrow Nick. Am I the only one you are waiting on Nick?
This round started a week ago! We'll be going until Easter at this rate. Boy oh boy, I get into a roulette I'm really intruged by, and it moves slower than an old lady with a walker. :|
Ah, whatareyagonnado?
-
It builds anticipation, deal with it! :hat
-
But if we know you're holding up the roulette, we can't give Nick shit.
And giving Nick shit is what we do best.
-
I believe Seth is also still not in for this round.
-
Someone beat the fuck out of Rapekins...always holding things up and keeping us from hassling Nick.
-
Yeah, it's sad when Nick isn't the one failing the most.
Seth/Wolf... you should both feel shame.
-
Mine will be sent within 4 hours, promise. :( I still have no fucking idea what I'm gonna send, I'll just wing something.
-
Song sent.
-
Dammit Seth just doesn't have that ring to it.
-
I think we can still consider this a failure on Nick's part, for allowing some of his participants to be so lax. The inmates should not run the prison.
Dammit Nick!
:dammitnick:
-
I have been lax, you're all banned for a month. :D
-
So far, the only thing nearly epic about this round is the length of time it's taking to complete it.
-
All good things with time.
I ended up being far busier yesterday than expected. Sadly as soon as I get home today I have to leave for State College, PA, and will be gone until Sunday at which point I have hockey playoffs to participate in, and then my radio show FINALLY gets back on the air on Monday, and then I have an event Tuesday...
What this all means is I probably won't update until Wednesday, for which I apologize but there isn't too much I can do about it.
-
no worries ... I can wait :D
-
If you tell us the new round now, that should give Seth plenty of time to get his submission in.
-
If you tell us the new round now, that should give Seth plenty of time to get his submission in.
:lol
I might try and do that in the brief time I'm home, and then come Wednesday I'll just have two rounds to judge.

Careful, you know how touchy Nick's computer is!
-
Another very strong round indeed! There was once again not a single track I was unhappy with.
Rich: Amplifier – Airborne (9 pt)
A strong start to the round, this song has a nice building intro and the band kind of reminds me of what little tool I’ve heard except being better. Lots of great guitar riffs in this and the end solo is quite nice as well.
JB: Bruce Springsteen – Jungleland (6 pt)
I’m vaguely familiar with Bruce and enjoy what I’ve heard well enough, and enjoyed this track well enough, but it didn’t really stand out that well against the competition here all that well. Liked the piano work throughout the track, and loved the sax bit.
Seth: Maudlin of the Well – Girl with a Watering Can (5 pt)
I should really like this more than I do. I had given Maudlin a chance before, and despite a style I enjoy and elements that I like I was never able to really get into them. This is a strong track but I just can’t get into it like I do the top songs from this round.
Ytse: Ozric Tentacles – Oakum (10 pt)
Holy instrumental goodness batman. This track is astounding. The song builds well on itself and manages to be a completely engaging 9 minute instrumental. I find that many instrumental tracks lag after 5-7 minutes, but not this one.
TPT: Queen – The Prophet’s Song (3)
Queen is another classic act I enjoy well enough but have never been big into. Aside from Sheer Heart Attack I’ve not heard much from the band outside of the hits and while I enjoyed this track I think it lacked a bit of substance. The vocals were fun, but seemed to dominate the track and not leave much else to the song.
DTVT: Therion – Via Nocturna (4 pt)
How much I liked this track musically is matched by how much I disliked the vocals on it. I thought I had commented in the growling round or some other about how I generally don’t like the operatic style, and this track takes that style and uses it to death. It’s hard to rank this song due to the discrepancy over what I like so much and don’t care for at all.
Zander: Unicorn – Hiding Again (7 pt)
Once the song really kicks in I’m reminded of a slightly more whimsical Fish-era Marillion for a short section of the song. When the vocals return I continue enjoying the song, but I’m not completely sold on the vocalist. Much of the song reminds me of a band I can’t put my finger of, perhaps touches of Season’s End-ish Marillion with something else mixed in. Aside from the iffy vocals it’s a beautiful track for sure.
Wolf: WASP – The Great Misconceptions of Me (8 pt)
Song sounds like shit, but makes up for that in the fact that it rocks pretty damn hard. I’ve heard a good bit of WASP, but this is probably right up at the top of what I’ve heard. Vocals are very strong and it’s just a well composed track.
Rapkins: 6+9+1+6+8+5 = 35
Hair: 5+4+0+9+9+8 = 35
Wolf: 9+8+0+4+4+8 = 33

Round 6: A Quickie
Well, after a round of long songs this round is simple, nothing over 4 minutes!
-
Wow... I just listened to the Oakum and Airborne submissions. They are NOTHING like anything I've been submitting. Think I may go with something very radical.
-
and to think, in my humble opinion, that THAT song is one of their weaker ones.
I had to pick it because so many of them are in the 10-12 range.
Im a huge ozric fan, but you gotta be willing to sift through the weird shit to get to the nugetz
-
Sent.
-
Hmmm.....what to send. I'll send mine tonight so we can keep things moving.
-
sent yesterday
-
hmm....I'll figure something out and send tonight.
-
Looking through some songs now. I think I'll be sending something safe and straight forward.
-
Man, everytime I go to pick something the band is listed multiple times in Nick's setlist!
-
After the first round I decided to not play it safe. Nick's musical taste is like Andorra, small and surrounded by the jagged mountains in which he currently resides. I'm trying to get him to annex some new musical territory.

OMG, that's too funny you would reference Andorra. I did a grade 10 geography project on Andorra... subtitled "the place where there is very little place".
I'm on the verge of pulling a Costanza, and going with the opposite of every instinct I have.
-
Guess Im in last place now? Both here and in Rich's.
I suck at roulette's.
-
Jingle you gotta just send crap. After I started losing
to Raven and his Harlequin Romance music (in seemingly every roulette) I just got a
bit more laid back about these things.
I like to believe that the music I send may be an epiphany
towards a new musical direction.
I have attempted to smash the "mountains around Andora"
I sent.......Unearth.

So....who are we waiting on here?
-
PC was banned but has since been unbanned, so he may still want to compete but last I checked he said no.
In any case I've listened to the 7 submissions 3-4 times each so far so Tuesday night I can easily do write ups. :)
-
I'm leaving Tuesday night, so please post the next theme when you get a chance so I can send round 7 by your preferred method, after that you'll have to deal with a links unless you want to wait until Jan. 4 or 5.
-
What was PC banned for? I miss all the fun. :lol
-
Well, since I'm a part of the forum again, I'll be happy to still take part in this, even though my chances of winning are zilch. Gimmie an hour or so to send a song.
-
Hurrahh!!
-
Yay!
Two Point Tingle is back!
-
Welcome back. Thanks for making me not in last place. Rich's roulette is doing me in already.
-
With no WPAPU (potentially not Nick's fault this time), results will come tonight, right?
-
PC: Jose Gonzales – How Long (6pt)
An interesting start to the round, this track would certainly stand out at the end as the oddest of the bunch. Not for technical wizardly or anything, it’s a rather simple track, and certainly an enjoyable one. Kinda mellow and beautiful, and a tactful choice as it isn’t something that comes full blast to use up the short time.
Rich: Protest the Hero – Termites (2 pt)
I’ve heard a couple of Protest the Hero songs before, and while I was neither disappointed nor blown away I’d say I liked those tracks better than this particular one. It was a decent track I suppose, but neither the music nor the vocals really caught my attention.
Zander: Reflection – Twilight Child (10 pt)
How good of a hit was this? It sunk my fucking battleship. I was not surprised Zander would send me something so good, but I am surprised that he would send something that seemed to familiar to me. There is a lesser known Italian act called Secret Sphere that this reminds me a lot of at times, and in general I could definitely see myself digging this band. Nice piano medleys and a strong chorus top off an overall great track.
Wolf: Seven Tears – Dream of Insanity (9 pt)
Another very strong track with a similar feel to Zander’s in the mood of the song and how it drives forward. Piano medleys are replaced by some other strong keyboards and it is another very strong track overall with a solo almost makes it top Zander.
Seth: Susanne Sundfor - Father Father (5pt)
Another risk taker like PC, but while I enjoyed this tracks beautiful vocals and soft medleys it just couldn’t stand up against some of the amazing submissions from the round.
JB: The Tragically Hip – Fireworks (3 pt)
Certainly didn’t see a song like this coming. Kinda combines a classic rock feel with some other stuff and it took me awhile to decide what to think of the song. There were issues with the sound I couldn’t quite put my finger on, but it was still a fun song with a neat chorus.
Ytse: Unearth – Last Wish (1 pt)
Eek. After winning two rounds I was really surprised when I heard this one. Sending me a track with vocals I’m nearly guaranteed to hate is roulette suicide, and it doesn’t help that I only found it musically mildly interesting at best, though that can be in part because I found it very difficult to focus on the music much.
DTVT: Warrel Dane – This Old Man (8 pt)
I think that most telling thing about this song is after hearing it the first time I had to check to make sure it was under 4 minutes. I think I did that the 2nd and 3rd time too. The song has its powerful moments, but it never seems in a hurry and seems to get a lot accomplished. I really enjoyed the overall feel of this one and very much like the contrast between the two main styles in the song.
Hair: 5+4+0+9+9+8+10 = 45
Wolf: 9+8+0+4+4+8+9 = 42
Rapkins: 6+9+1+6+8+5+5 = 40
Mason: 8+7+1+7+2+4+8 = 37
Ytse: 1+5-1+5+10+10+1 = 31
Brit: 4+6+0+3+5+9+2 = 29
Puppet: 7+1-1+1+6+6+3 = 23
Joseph: 2+2-1+2+3+3+6 = 17
-
Well, even pulling a "Costanza" and going with the opposite of my gut instinct got me nowhere. Ah, whatareyagonnado?
Nice guitar riff on This Old Man. Couldn't find Twilight Child or Dream of Insanity anywhere online.
-
Twilight Child should be on youtube. The name of the band is spelled Reflexion.

Opening (especially the keyboard melody) reminded me a lot of For the Heart I Once Had (Nightwish).
Good tune.
-
Nick, post a round theme soon if you want to get your song the preferred way.

Round 7: A Happy Place
Okay guys, what I want is something just like Transatlantic. Music so joyful I can't help but smile. I know TA has a lot of Beatles influence, but oddly I'm not huge into the Beatles. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy them, but I'd suggest sending something a little newer. The bigger the smile on my face (usually caused by musical and not lyrical content) the higher you'll likely score.
Edit: Please keep songs under 7 minutes. You'll all get your chance for long songs next round. ;)
-
Y'all need to come up with something a little more original. Rich did 'happy' a couple of weeks ago. Chef just asked for the same. Chemist and I are just about out of happy songs!
Do you want Transatlantic-like music, or any kind of music that will put a smile in your pants face.
-
Deathtrain it is.
Happy music is usually crappy music. That's why there is an entire genre of music called "Blues", and not one called "Sunshine and Kittens".
Well, since I don't consider Transatlantic to be "happy" music, I have no idea what you mean, so you're probably getting Deathtrain.
Fuck it, I remembered a song, but I want to state it is NOT an endorsement for this band. It's a song my guitar teacher had me learn.
-

 Thanks for voicing my thoughts about happy music.....
-
Nick, is there any time restrictions for this round?
Please tell me songs can be up to 9 minutes!?

I tend to agree, this could cover so much depending on what you classify as 'happy'
-
I'm thinking of going with The Wiggles. That's happy music!

Wealthy buggers also!!
-
No worries Nick.
I take chances....despite knowing it wouldn't be your thing...that disc makes it into my "highlights of the year" just such good riffage in the new Unearth.
Transatlantic type stuff eh?
I've got lots. The only difference is, it sounds better.
(grin)
also...Jingle....as a Canadian I could have told you that aliens abducted the REAL Tragically Hip sometime after Fully Completely. There isn't a single album after that one that merrits any kind of condisderation. That band sank long ago....with new orleans.
-
Yeah, I know regarding the Hip. Frankly, I never really liked much by them anyway, Fireworks being one of the few that I do. With hockey references, and my 'Costanza' approach that round, that's the reason I submitted that tune.
-
I faired considerably worse with my selection.
-

it's feast or famine with you in this roulette, eh?
-
Okay guys, what I want is something just like Transatlantic. Music so joyful I can't help but smile.
Still waiting for clarification. These two things (sounds like TA; joyful music) are not collectively exhaustive. What I mean, is that joyful music can sound nothing like TA. So, do you want music that sounds like TA, or do you want joyful, smile inducing music?
-
Rich, of all the PTH songs you could have sent, you sent Termites...
Also, what Susanne Sundfor song did Seth send you? You didn't actually say...

TA has a quality to it that just brings a smile to my face. Sections like Motherless Children just ooze musical life and the melodies are so happy and catchy, and that's what I'm looking for.
Rich, of all the PTH songs you could have sent, you sent Termites...

My bad, edited it in.

EDIT: Also SENT!

How's everyone going here? With Xmas I haven't submitted a song yet. Sorry Nick, I will do it tonight. Just gonna take a punt with this round as I'm a bit baffled.

Although I know it's not because of the actual song, one of the submissions from this past round has caused my computer to crash twice, so I'm having to take some precautions before listening to everything again.

This round really made me appreciate Neal Morse and Roine Stolt even more than I previously have. I love how their voices seem to drip emotion and I kinda realized that is why I love so many Transatlantic parts. The vocal melodies are often stunning. That said for different reasons this was again a very strong round and I’m sorry about the wait.
PC: Alcest – Tir Nan Og (8 pts)
Two point Tingle sent in a four round performance with this track. Instrumental with some vocals (no lyrics) this is a nice combination of soothing and happy. The vocal parts in the song are executed really well as are many of the minor instrumental parts that back the main frame of the song.
JB: Blues Image – Ride Captain Ride (2 pt)
A nice enough song with a good classic rock groove, but I found it a bit dull to ever put too much of a smile on my face. I’d be happy enough if I heard this song on the radio at some point, but I’m not really looking to replay it too much here at home.
Seth: Jonsi – Go Do (9 pts)
After the first 30 seconds of this song I was almost laughing at Seth for sending this to me, but as the song progressed I realized it’s pretty much exactly what I was looking for this round. Sure, the lyrics are either in some other language or gibberish, but the song is happy to the core, and as I listen to the music and vocal melodies I can’t help but smile. Not sure how much replay value this band would have with me, but for a single song this was a great submission.
Wolf: Masterplan – Wounds (3 pts)
I can definitely see why Wolf would send this track. I do love Jorn Lande and the chorus definitely can put a smile on my face. Problem was the song was more typical power metal chorus than the other submissions and really didn’t stand out well against them. Very good track nonetheless.
Ytse: Metamorphosis – You (1 pt)
Much like Wolf’s submissions this is another one that really failed to pack the necessary punch for the round despite being a good song. There are a few parts which hit the mark, but overall this is getting the famine half of Ytse’s recent scoring trends.
Rich: Moon Safari – Heartland (10 pts)
This song comes together musically and vocally to hit what I was looking for pretty much on the head. The synths offer up goodness around every turn it seems, often followed by synthetic and layered vocals that consist of pure joy that make it hard not to be happy.
Zander: Nightengale – Atlantis Rising (6 pts)
First off, I know Zander submitted this band before, but since I didn’t say it couldn’t be done originally I ok’d him sending this. This track is very different from the previous track Zander sent, and it does a great job of taking the general idea of Wolf’s submission and perfecting it in what is a better and more joyous track. With this solid showing the roulette is Zander’s to lose.
DTVT: Oasis – Live Forever (7 pts)
All the songs of 5 or more points were great and this is the last of that very hard to rank bunch. Much like Rich’s submission this did a good job combining music and vocals is a happy grouping. And it had a rocking feel much as Zander’s submission. All in all a great overall track as well. I’d say no round up to this point has had so many fantastic tracks.
Hair: 5+4+0+9+9+8+10+6 = 51
Rapkins: 6+9+1+6+8+5+5+9 = 49
Wolf: 9+8+0+4+4+8+9+3 = 45
Mason: 8+7+1+7+2+4+8+7 = 44
Brit: 4+6+0+3+5+9+2+10 = 39
Ytse: 1+5-1+5+10+10+1+1 = 32
Puppet: 7+1-1+1+6+6+3+2 = 25
Joseph: 2+2-1+2+3+3+6+8 = 25
-
Damn. Nice work with the Oasis DTV, great track right there. That round did kind of stump me. 1 more round to go, yes?
-
Round 8: Ending Themes
This round I simply ask for a closing track under 20 minutes in length. Here's the catch. If you send me a 5 minute track I'll end up listening to it 4 times. You send a 10 minute or so track and I'll listen to it twice. You send anything over 12 or 13 minutes and I'll only be listening to it once, so it better take me on first listen. Basically you can send and closing track you like, but I'm dedicating 20 minutes of listening time to it regardless.
Good luck to everyone as you vie for position, and especially the top 4 who could all still win this thing.
-
Just had a go round with Moon Safari. Nice sounding track (given the theme). Jonsi was kinda odd.
I'm 99% sure I know what will be sent, but gonna go take the dog for a walk and have a listen to a few closing tracks. I may just pull the ultimate 'Costanza', go with the opposite of my instincts, and send something I think you'll hate.... because clearly with a couple of deuces and singles, I have no clue what kind of music appeals to you.
-
YAY glad you liked it! :D
You must must must check out their album Lovers End. I think you'll like it a lot.
-
Better than I expected, I don't mind losing to Alcest and Moon Safari, but to this day I haven't been able to make it through one Sigur Ros song and care to listen to another one, so I can't imagine Jonsi being much different.
Sent, and I'll actually be disappointed if Mr. All Prog doesn't already have this.
-
Nick, must this be the last song on the album. What if an album has a closing track but then a short epilogue type ending but is not in fact a song?
-
I know exactly what type of thing you're talking about, and I'll allow it.
-

Got to keep thinking.

I found it amusing that I finally let you guys go wild on song length and I didn’t receive a single song over 8 minutes!
DTVT: Dali’s Dilemma – Living in Fear (7)
A very interesting track for sure. Sound is a bit muddy on the instruments, but there are elements here that Mason could have very easily guessed I’d love. There are some instrumental bits in this song that had me thinking I was listening to Dream Theater, and that’s never a horrible thing!
Wolf: Dungeon – Under the Cross (6)
I am somewhat familiar with Lord Tim, the mastermind behind Dungeon, but was not familiar with this particular track. It ended up being what I’d expect, vocals as metal as they come and guitar work to match. All in all a strong track from them, but not near my favorite of what I’ve heard.
JB: Harem Scarem – Had Enough Harem Scarem Mood Swings (9)
Loved the opening little guitar bit that reminded me of Joe Satriani, and the rest that reminded me of great Van Halen wasn’t too shabby either. Great guitar led rock, nuff said.
Seth: Martin Grech – Elixir (1)
I have a feeling had I heard this track at the end of the entire album I might appreciate it more, but as it stands I wasn’t too taken by it. It has a great atmosphere, but not much going on to latch on to.
Ytse: Maxxess – Slow Motion (Live) (4)
I can imagine this being a fantastic wind-down track as the hypnotic qualities of the music are amazing, and it certainly is on top of the three tracks submitted that didn’t have too much action in them.
Rich: Nightengale – Better Safe than Sorry (8)
A pretty powerful and anthemic song, it also has a lot of little bits of awesomeness that take this song to a high level. Though the entire song is a good one there is no question the greatest strength lies in a very strong chorus.
Zander: The Birthday Massacre – Nevermind (5)
When this song started I was wondering if Zander had decided to take a dive in order to win a bet that he’d lose the roulette. Song starts with a strong pop edge and a singer that initially sounds like a Robin Sparkles knockoff (How I Met Your Mother reference). Though I don’t think the song is fantastic, it does hit some fantastic sections and I’m able to forget the opening a bit.
PC: Tori Amos – Carry (2)
Two point Tingle is back in prime form people! This is another track that might sound better to me in context, but as is didn’t do too much for me. Nothing much annoyed me, and it was a soft and luscious track, but there really wasn’t too much catching my interest.
Hair: 5+4+0+9+9+8+10+6 +5 = 56
Wolf: 9+8+0+4+4+8+9+3+6 = 51
Mason: 8+7+1+7+2+4+8+7+7 = 51
Rapkins: 6+9+1+6+8+5+5+9+1 = 50
Brit: 4+6+0+3+5+9+2+10+8 = 47
Ytse: 1+5-1+5+10+10+1+1+4 = 36
Puppet: 7+1-1+1+6+6+3+2+9 = 34
Joseph: 2+2-1+2+3+3+6+8+2 = 27
For 2nd place, I ask that both Mason and Wolf send me a track under 5 minutes. You have 3 options on what to send. Either the artist begins with the letter C, the album begins with the letter D, or the song begins with the letter E.
I will listen to each track once and declare who gets silver and who gets bronze in this thing.

I'll figure something out. I was going to send Cairo, but they don't do short songs.
Better yet, how about I automatically win if I pull off the Trifecta :lol
EDIT: Found one. Too bad it's one Nick already has. Even under 5 minutes.

I'm glad I finally knocked one out of the park, and the fact I was able to stay ahead of TPT.
As much grief as we gave you, it was fun (as most roulette's are). Just going to download your WPAPU wrap up now.

congrats raven.
congrats on your member of the year win too (pending but obvious)

I have a Flyers game tonight, but tomorrow I have off, so I will listen to both songs when I get up Wednesday morning and see who gets 2nd and 3rd.

I'm pretty sure as hell you would like the song he sent me in the first round YBS. It might not even be my favorite on that album; like I said he had me looking for it immediately.

I thought he only listened to independent female folk/prog artists?
Is that not the case?

No, he has interests outside of those. He sent me Dan Swano the first round, and it was fucking awesome. Nick wouldn't like it for sure, but you would. I'll PM you the song he sent.

Zander won Nick's roulette?!
he's pretty much winning all of the roulettes......I've had to question wether the music I listen to is actually good...I'm pretty much question wether this site has any kind testicles at all any more.
People don't listen to the music I live? THEY MUST BE PUSSIES

Sigz listens to a bunch of techno garbage?
What a little girl.

Cooool, looks like I pulled it together in the last couple of rounds, shame about some of my earlier performances!
Rich: Nightengale – Better Safe than Sorry (8)
A pretty powerful and anthemic song, it also has a lot of little bits of awesomeness that take this song to a high level. Though the entire song is a good one there is no question the greatest strength lies in a very strong chorus.
That should be Nightingale. And yeah the chorus is great, although my favourite bit of the song is the bridge section - so epic. If you like the song then you'll probably like either that album (Nightfall Overture) or the one after, White Darkness. Actually I'd say on the whole, the latter is the better album.
Anyway, well done Zander! :D

Slough Feg are pretty good, but seriously, WASP are amazing.

The vocals for the first bit of the Slough Feg song really struck a bad chord with me, though by the end it was a really close call.

Cheers for letting me be part of this Nick, great stuff.
