Sorry KevShmev, had to steal your idea!
So yeah, it's basically going to run the same way that the Rush SOTD thread is running, with a few changes. I'll pick a song each day, and after a week, I'll pick someone new to carry the torch. They'll go for a week, and pass it on to someone else (preferably someone that hasn't done it before). Etc.
Also, if it isn't clear, the SOTD is not limited to his solo albums. It can be any song he's been a performer on (meaning songs that he's simply done the production for don't count). So Porcupine Tree, Blackfield, Bass Communion, and Jordan Rudess' "Tarkus" are all fair game.
I hope this is fun!
The Steven Wilson Song of the Day for October 27th is "Abandoner"
The reason I didn't get into Insurgentes for a LONG time. It is totally the opposite of what traditional music sounds like. But after I warmed up to the album (which later earned a place in my top 5), I really began to appreciate the song. It's incredibly somber and haunting, musically and lyrically. I was surprised to learn that the dark tones in the latter half of the song are actually the lower keys on the piano (from the Insurgentes road documentary). Brilliant. I really really really hope Steven comes to the west coast because I would kill to hear this song.
-
Do we honestly need one of these for every artist? :P
Just sayin'.
-
We have one for only one other artist...
-
Yeah but this is how trends start.
-
So what?
Abandoner is awesome.
-
Abandoner rocks.
-
I'll add setlist spoiler tags.
-
I'll add setlist spoiler tags.
Nevermind I'll discuss those things in the SW thread. Thanks.
-
Well, this thread needs more No-man in the future, seriously.
Can't believe not more SW-fans check that project out. :o
Abandoner is a great song btw.

They are on the list but it's not like I can absorb all his projects at once. :lol
-
Great tune. Does anyone else notice that the sounds heard around the 2:31-2:35 mark are very similar to music used in the movie The Usual Suspects (in the long boat scene near the end). I've always noticed that.
-
Not among my favorite on the album, but still a solid track.
-
The Steven Wilson Song of the Day for October 28th is "Lullaby" (Blackfield)
One of my favorite BF songs. Very soothing, very melancholic but in a gentle way. I'm amazed at how minimalist SW can be while still being himself and creating something original.
-
H I'm not gonna read this thread because I don't wanna know anything about the setlist, but you should keep the spoiler tags in the thread title

I love it, but Vapour Trail Lullaby takes it to a whole new level :heart
-
Lullaby, one of my favorite Blackfield-tunes.
Such a fantastic song, can't say enough good things about it!

Okay, sorry bout that...I figured Lullaby was a BF song so I took the tags off. Didn't realize that people would read before the Lullaby post.

The Steven Wilson Song of the Day for October 29th is "Way Out Of Here" (Porcupine Tree)
It took me a while to warm up to this song. Initially I ranked it in the bottom two of the album, but now it's at least in the top three. The "I'll try to forget you..." verse just brings tears to my eyes. The music video is incredible, too.
-
Its one of the most emotion-packed songs I've ever heard *appreciates and loves*
-
My all-time favourite PT song... I can't describe how powerful it is.
-
i love the shit out of "WOOH" (gotta love the acronym!), but i also really love "Cheating the Polygraph," the original 'song 5' when PT debuted FOABP live pre-release. they work really well together, though i think i prefer the tracklist as it appears on the FOABP vinyl ("CTP" between "My Ashes" and "Anesthetize").
the aforementioned "i'll try to forget you..." verse is amazing, probably my favourite part. but even the intro is fantastic; when the drums come in, i get chills. the chorus is catchy, and contrasting nearly to the point of not fitting, but it works. the bridge is one of the best on the record, methinks, as it doesn't smack of "metal for metal's sake" like that of "Normal."
anyone else find this to be the emotional climax of the record?
-
Awesome guitar solo, that's about it.
-
Never got into this track, in my bottom 2 in FOABP.. still, it's a good song.
-
Abandoner is crazy. Not necessarily 100% good crazy, but most of it is.
-
Gavin Harrison's drumming during the breakdown: :hefdaddy
-
Way Out of Here is great, such a sad tune.
-
First half of WOOH is very good. Second half is a schizophrenic mess of a song.
-
The part with "And I'll try to forget you, I know that I will" is so amazing and tears and stuff. And then of course the chorus
Yes it is amazing
-
Meh.
-
Sorry I forgot to update yesterday.
The Steven Wilson Song of the Day for October 31st is "Veneno Para Las Hadas"
Favorite track off Insurgentes. So beautifully raw. That's all I have to say about it.
-
Definitely one of my favorites from Insurgentes :heart
-
Good song, sorta feels like a "ripoff"-mix from The Sky Moves Sideways and some No-Man songs, but still a great song! :tup

There's definitely a more than passing resemblence to TSMS, but aye good tune.
-
So what you're saying is that Steven plagiarized off of himself.
-
So what you're saying is that Steven plagiarized off of himself.
Moreso recycled older tunes.
-
Eh, I don't see anything wrong with that.
-
When DT did it on BC&SL, don't ask me to provide the examples right now, I'd have to find where in which song it was, but I'm in class, entire sections from previous songs were just copy&pasted in. It really pissed me off. I don't know why.
-

SW could fart into a microphone and then do the same 2 years later and i'd probably love it..
Nah, i'd take it on a case by case basis. No doubt alot of people thought The Shattered Fortress was abit lame, although PT releasing Sentimental/Normal was a great idea imo.

Well, the song they did that in did it because it was wrapping up the 12-step suite. It was an artistic move that I think worked really well. The Shattered Fortress is still a badass song.
As for Venemo Para Las Hadas, yeah, the beginning is exactly like The Sky Moves Sideways, but the song is still fantastic, so I don't mind.
-
Besides, SW often plagiarizes himself, so it's not that rare. :P
-
I actually prefer TSMS, so it's always a bit annoying to hear this and then have it not be that. :lol

Yeah this, The Sky Moves Sideways is higher on my personal favorites list, so when the intro starts, and SW doesn't go "We lost the skyline", I sorta go.. >:(
:lol
-
Speaking of SW plagiarizing himself, does anyone know if there's an official reason for the "Trains" reference in "Sentimental?" My guess is that its the link between the kid wishing he was older and sentimental to the nostalgia-laden "Trains."
-
And then WOOH starts with some lyric about train-tracks, doesn't it? /tenuouslinkage
-
TSMS is one of of PT's best masterpieces imo :)

Which part are you talking about?

SW mentioned it in an interview, and yeah that's basically the idea IIRC.
-
Still can't find the "Trains" reference....
The Steven Wilson Song of the Day for November 1st is "Collapse The Light Into Earth" (Porcupine Tree)
Quite possibly my favorite PT song. It's so beautiful. In my mind, it's the perfect breakup song, even though I think the song is about a person dying. Anyway, I can't even listen to this song anymore without tearing up or getting an emotional swell, especially during the last chorus.
-
That song has to be the best song I've ever heard in my life, I just can't put into words how poweful, beautiful, yet so simple of a piece it is. The sadness just pours out of that song so much. Like I said once, its so sad that it almost feels happy.
:heart :heart :heart :heart :heart :heart :heart :heart :heart :heart :heart :heart :heart :heart
-
Top 5 PT song right here.
-
Agreed. One of my absolute favorites, love the melancholic yet ethereal feeling the song imposes.
-
Good song, not much more to say.
Makes Ryan wet in his panties as well.
-
The Steven Wilson Song of the Day for November 2nd is "I Drive the Hearse" (Porcupine Tree)
Top 10 song/track/whatever here. Really solid closer to a really solid album. The chorus is one of those SW moments where it sounds very uplifting and inspiring, but the lyrics are actually very dark. One of the reasons I love The Incident so much.
Also, either Zantera or Sigz, do one of you want to do it for next week, starting tomorrow? You guys have posted here the most.
-
Second best on the album behind Time Flies :P
-
Best song on The Incident, nice pick.
-
I really have to be in a mood to enjoy that. It's really amazing when I'm in that mood though.
-
I never really cared for it. I only ever listen to it if I'm listening to the entire album, and even then I'll often stop at Circle of Manias.
-
I Drive the Hearse is a beast of a song; definitely a top 10 PT song in my book. It contains most of the elements that make Porcupine Tree great.
-
I Drive The Hearse was the one song off of The Incident I listened to most when the album first came out, beautiful song!
-
I would also like to point out that I Drive the Hearse has some of my favorite PT-lyrics from the latter half of their discography:
And silence is another way
Of saying what I wanna say
And lying is another way
Of hoping it will go away
And you were always my mistake..
-
Achingly beautiful is how I always describe this song. Top 15 for me.
-
Yeah, so whoever wants to take over, feel free to grab the torch!

I'LL DO IT
Today's song: Sleep of No Dreaming
-
Yay!
I've only listened to Signify like 4 times, and SoND is a song that stands out to me. Really great opening song (I consider it the opening song).
-
Sleep of No Dreaming is so awesome, especially on Anesthetize.
-
Sleep of No Dreaming is amazing, Coma Divine version especially.
One of my favorites from Signify.
-
Quite overrated imo, never got the enormous amounts of love it got/gets, despite it being pretty good.
-
Sleep of no dreaming is my favorite song off of Signify (which is the only PT album I don't really like). Regardless, Sleep of no dreaming is one of my favorite PT songs. Its so chill and mellow, but with such a strong presence. I love the lyric "I married the first girl, who wasn't a man".
-
One of my favorites :heart :heart
-
Definitely one of my favourites from the album, at least in my top 2. An amazing song. The chorus rocks!
