Finally the time has come. Welcome everyone to my roulette. I hope we can all have a good time and that I get to know tons of new music. I will be doing 8 rounds. Since every game needs to have a set of basic rules, here are some: I don't mind receiving the same band twice as lon as it's from different people and as long as it's only twice. Following DTVTs suggestion, if I have received a song from a band two times I'll note that when I post results so you don't send it again. The scores will go from 1 to 7. Those are all the rules we need right now, the rest is all fun.

Avantasia – Another Angel Down: I had listened to Avantasia before but nothing that I liked. This song reminded me of Gamma Ray a lot, that melodic power metal type of thing that I listen to now and then. Great vocals from both Jorn and Tobias, nice guitar melodies.
Obscure
Myrath – Hope: I love the intro in this song, just fantastic. After than it goes down and has a tough time keeping up. The instrumental section before the solos did not get to me. Neither did the solos which were flashy but boring. After that they go right into some exquisite prog and then turning into this metal stuff to the point I was :metal. So, some parts I love, some parts I don’t. The song as a whole doesn’t hold up very well.

Neurosis – Stones from the sky: I got sucked into the weird orbital atmosphere that makes me feel I’m falling. There’s no particular thing I liked about it yet I enjoyed listening to it. I will say thought that the ending lost me completely when the weird sounds and breaks come in and the harsh vocals in the middle didn’t do it for me.

Amorphis – Silent water: Mmm, I like the piano in this song but the rest of the song doesn’t push any buttons. The vocals seem dull at the beginning but they manage to pick up afterwards. The riffs are interesting but get lost in the big picture.
Liberation
Katatonia – Rusted: Nothing in this song is clicking for me. It’s a decent metal tune but I can’t find anything special to it.
Zander
Nightingale – The Dreamreader: Nice tune. I like how powerful it is. The keyboards give a great touch of melody, the vocals are good and the solo makes a great ending as the song fades out.
Cup
Steely Dan – Aja: This song started slow but then picked up really quick. I love the great instrumentation, the jazzy vibe that made me almost dance on my chair. Everyone in the band seems to know exactly what to do and how to make the overall sound really nice.

Dance Gavin Dance – Tree Village: Nothing special about this song. As much as I like the variation I feel that they are trying to fit too many things in a 3 minute song and not really building anything up enough. The harsh vocal/screams did not help at all.

You know what you could do with regards to Deathlok is give him the lowest score -1 for the round.
That's how it works in one of my football pools if people forget to submit their picks one week.
They get 1 less than the worst person got.

Radiohead - Paranoid Android: I find Thom Yorkes voice to be really annoying. As far as the song itself I like how all the instruments blend together really well and how the song doesn’t stay in something simple but actually goes through several stages. I didn’t quite like the solos. Some good stuff and some not so good.
Liberation
The Dresden Dolls – Sing: I love how soothing the song is the beginning and how it grows slowly into a more upbeat song. The acoustic guitar and piano give it a very nice touch and when the drums come in it only gets better. I like it better when the singer is going for higher toned than when she goes with the really low ones.

The Dear Hunter - The Lake and The River: The first part of the song is clearly elevator music :P but I like it and I really love the overall vibe, the unusual instruments and how the song goes through every section with excellent transitions. I don’t know what’s with you and the weird song endings, but after the train sound comes in the song loses me.

Ozric Tentacles – Magick Valley: I was not expecting any electronic music and I’m not disappointed with your choice. I find electronic music hard to describe so I’ll just say that I like that this song is not boring, it creates a nice atmosphere, the melodies are interesting and the arab theme gives this song a boost.
Obscure
Massive attack – Inertia Creeps: After all the previous comments about me being creepy for asking you photos make me feel funny about the title in this song :P. As I said before, electronic music is hard to describe for me. I like the darkish atmosphere on the song and some of the arrangements. Other than that it’s an OK song.
Ravenheart
Dredg – Sang Real: The piano and electronic drums go really well together and the bass adds a good touch to it. The little instrumental section gives the song a nice break.
Cup
MJQ – Django: I enjoy some jazzy stuff, but this particular kind of jazz bores me to death.
Dethklok
Attack Attack - Interlude: Aside from the middle part, the rest is just regular electronic music I could listen to in a nightclub. Not really my thing.

At first I tried googling Zxlkho in hopes he had taken that from somewhere. His FB page was the first thing to show up...Then I went to images where I found his avatar and a photo of Lonestar.....

I only have like three more practices this season so fuck it I'll stay. Anyway I appoligize and have sent in this rounds song.

The problem was that it was far more complicated than that for me:
1) It has to be happy (and with my music taste this is actually a big problem :P)
2) I want something more ambitious than just a simple poppy song
3) It has to be a band which isn't "mainstream" (as in "everyone knows them") and also isn't on his list
4) It's more or less representative of the band and not something that's completely unusual for them
5) There were three bands that may have had something to offer for this round, but I deliberately wanted to not use them for now
Getting through #1 was difficult enough, but then there was always something from #2-5 that was an issue. I'm not 100% satisfied with my final choice (it's a really cool song but... I think there could be something better), but this was really far harder than it seemed. I'm just not the right person to ask for happy music. :P

Agreed. One of the advantages of being an old fogie is that even though a round might not play to my musicial preferences - this round for instance as I rarely look for music that is happy - I've been exposed to enough stuff over the years that I effortlessly was able to identify several songs I could potentially send. Unfortunately fogies like YBS and I aren't the cool kids and our opinions are largely ignored by the community here.

I said that I've had exposure to more music. You must be kidding me.
I've been reading this forum for quite a while (longer than I am registered), and I have never, ever seen a single case when anyone's opinion was ignored or mocked or whatever because of their age (older or younger), and I can't imagine why anyone who's sane would ever take that into account on a music board, especially a fairly specialised one like this. And if something, the only times when I've seen such things happen, it was always because of young age (stereotypes about teenagers' taste in music and all that). I honestly do not know where are you getting this from.
Also, no offence but I do find it annoying if you feel the overwhelming need to underline regularly that you're "an old fogie". I don't think I've seen that happen in your case but sorry, this does not make me like you more or appreciate your experience more. I have a HUGE respect for people who are older than average here (since I think most members here are something around 18-25) and combine their love for older bands with love of new music, and there are many such people on this board. But if you intentionally create a kind of "age gap" then sorry, but this is not going to result in any positive consequences, especially if it's meant to show your superiority. And especially that I don't see your age as "old" as all, you make it look old yourself. I just see it as much more experienced than mine but far from old.
And commenting on my hard choice this round, it doesn't have much to do with age either, I just have unusual listening habits which results in me knowing not so many bands (but I know most of them in great detail :P). And this round was surprisingly difficult because at the same time I'm much more into dark/melancholic music and also a lot of music that counts as happy from what I listened to is already known to Nekov which limited by possibilities even further.

This is DTF; people are civil to some extent. They wouldn't have wanted to hurt you, emotionally.
Being a sort of lightning rod here, I get that sort of stuff rather often (not nearly as much as, say, a couple months back); I know from experience, though, that the guys aren't malicious at all.

The Radio Dept. – Heaven’s on Fire: This song is really happy and has a really nice groove. The keyboards and piano are clearly the highlights in the song. Even though it’s a bit repetitive it managed to keep me interested. And the ending is better than the rest of the song which is an improvement with you.

Ben Folds Five – Song for the dumped: On the first listen I enjoyed it but then I just found it to be a fairly standard song. Nothing stands out to me.

Foster the People – Helena Beat: It seems that you and I have a very different musical taste. Nothing in this song appeals to me.
Cup
Chicago – Introduction: More jazz from you. In this case I’m ok with it because it’s upbeat. I enjoyed this song though not much and it didn’t get me smiling.
Obscure
The Eagles – Those Shoes: Great rock song. The guitar takes all over this song. Good rhythms and good vocal melody. Unfortunately it failed to make me smile.

Soilwork – Stabbing the Drama: This song is metal as fuck, but not the kind of metal that I like. The singer killed any chance of me smiling while listening to this song. The keyboards are the only thing that got me to enjoy this a little bit.
Liberation
Pain of salvation – Conditioned: This is a fun song to listen to. The first guitar riff got me into it immediately. This is one of those songs I’m not sure I can describe why I liked but I did. And it made me smile though it took a couple of listens.
Ravenheart
Anathema – Everything: This is such a beautiful song. The two voices combine perfectly. I love everything about this song. And it got me smiling easily.

I realized I'll be coming back home really late tomorrow so I gave a couple more listents to each song and boom, here are the results
DTVT
Magellan – Family Jewels: Man I love the sound of the flute. All the solo section is great, from the soothing parts to the ones where it goes crazy. When the keyboards come in it all turns into this ELP sounding awesomeness. Towards the end it stalls a little.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor – Antennas to Heaven: This song has its moments but for the most part I found it pretty boring.
Ravenheart
Agalloch – The Hawthorne Passage: Mmmm, this song is strange. The first half of the song is kinda meh, but then it picks up after the cut and builds a nice atmosphere. The end is creepy. In case you haven’t googled what is being said I will translate. The girl: I will die and no one will remember me. The guy: Yes Liz, I will remember you and I’ll go visit you to the graveyard with a flower and a dog. And I will sing at your funeral in a soft voice, how beautiful a burial is.

Negurǎ Bunget – Norilor: I like how the use the percussion as the main driving force in the song and the rest of the instruments give it a nice atmosphere to develop while occasionally taking the center of the stage. Great song
Cup
Weather Report – Unknown Soldier: I’m familiar with this band since my dad likes it though I haven’t paid much attention to them. There is way too much improvisation here. Some of it is cool but most of it is beyond me and makes the song too inconsistent.
Obscure
Pentagram – For those who died alone: The main melody of the song is nice but rest doesn’t add much to the song. Then when it gets all metal it picks up a bit but then it flattens.
Ytse
Magic Elf – Scrambledreggs: This is the song you should have sent me last round. It’s so fun to listen to. It kept me dancing and moving. It’s just great.

Solitude Aeturnus – Chapel of burning: This song is quite simple yet entertaining. Can’t comment anything else.
DTVT – Pennsylvania, US
Clockwork – If these walls could talk: This reminds me a little of WDADU. The sound quality is not very good and the singer doesn’t hold up to the rest of the band, but the instrumentation is really good. Good solos, good instrumental sections and a good overall cohesion. The instrumental section around 4:00 is really Take The Timeish.

Annihilator – Betrayed: :metal :metal :metal :metal Fuck yeah. This song got me head banging all along. It’s really right to the point thrash metal, good riffs, good vocals, and overall powerful stuff. I see you are not a Mangini fanboy like most of the people here.
Obscure – Yalova, Turkey
Şebnem Ferah - Ben Şarkımı Söylerken: The parts of the song that are hard rock are quite good and her voice is great. But the chorus gets to poppy and kills the mood. And completely not related to my rating this song, this girl is sooooo hot.
Liberation – Warsaw, Poland
Votum – December 20th: This is some nice prog metal. It starts slow but then it develops nicely. The guitar riffs are great whether they are powerful or soft and the drumming is really good too. The vocals are the only thing I think lacks something but overall this song is great.
Cup – California, US
Cairo – The Prophecy: This song gave me a prog boner. The instrumentation at the beginning of the song already had me. But then it just keeps getting better. It goes to a softer side and start escalating into some more prog instrumental with an awesome drum arrangement. You totally outdid yourself with this song. :clap:

Polkadot Cadaver – Cake and eat it too: The song itself is good. It has a lot of variation and different sections but the lyrics ruin it. I’m normally able to not pay attention to them but the cake thing drives me off.

Seventh Wonder – Wise Man: The keyboards and piano are fantastic in this song. The rest is pretty standard prog metal. At one point I wondered what was special about this song and then the piano solo came in and stole my heart.
DTVT
Enchant – Flat Line: I find the guitar sound to be too staticky and the song overall to be uninteresting. It almost takes up when the guitar solo comes in but then it goes back to where it was before.
Obscure
Overkill – Necroshine: The intro of the song got me all excited cause I thought something interesting was coming my way, but then it turned out to be just plain thrash metal which was a bit disappointing. The drums are a bit sloppy and the singer’s voice is not my cup of tea. The rest of the band is ok.
Liberation
Anathema – Violence: This starts out beautifully and then starts building up greatly, but then the drums come in and kill the mood a little bit. The transition from that to the piano section doesn’t have a good flow. After that the song is soothing but a little boring.

Van der Graff Generator – Childlike Faith in Childhood’s End: Classic prog is really good at setting moods. I like how the song changes, going from softer to more wild sections but I get the feeling that they are trying too hard to throw prog at you in the face.

Oceansize – Ornament, The Last Wrongs: The song starts out really soothing then goes into a cyclothymic section that really intense. A powerful yet really nice song. And the vocal melody is just beautiful.
Ravenheart
Unicorn – Hiding Again: I’m in love with this song. The piano and flute flow together beautifully for the intro, and then the instrumental part comes in to take the song to a new level just to flow right into a softer side again and then back up. When I thought the song just couldn’t get better, the female vocals come in and by god her voice is great.

Arch/Matheos – Neurotically Weird: The drumming in this song is freaking amazing. The guitar is playing good riffs but sit sounds to standard heavy metal for being in a prog song. I would have liked it better if it was shorter.

Darkwater – Breathe: Nice. Still sounds a lot like what I have heard of them but I think they’ve improved. The instrumental section is pretty neat.

Where did I say I hate anyone? How is rooting for someone taking it seriously? Reading comprehension people, please. People like to jump on things I say and really twist them. Why am I not allowed to root for someone? I'm clearly out of the running, so rooting for myself is kind of pointless. Xander and YBS are running tight and I would rather see one of them win than Liberation/Darkes7. Is there something wrong with that? I like some users more than others, and therefore would like to see those users do well.

Therion – Unguentum Sabbati: The song starts off being powerful and seems like it’s going to be very interesting but is unable to achieve it. There are interesting parts but I get the feeling that it comes and goes.

Harmonium – Histories Sans Paroles: This song works for having as background sounds when reading or something. It’s not really interesting in itself but it is quite soothing and easy to the ears. And it’s waaaay too long.
Obscure
Beautiful Sin – I’m Real: I like how the vocals do a great contrast with the powerfulness of the song. But the whole song is basically her singing I’m real, which I liked to a certain degree.

Dreamscape – Flow: The piano intro is beautiful. After that it gets better with a heavier side which I like and then does really well transitioning back to softer parts. I just wish the guitar riffs were more interesting, I don’t think it holds very well compared to the rest.

Odyssey – Amon-Ra: I was surprised to listen to something like this coming from you on the last round. I start off really heavy and then just holds for too long and gets a bit boring but I do like how it transitions to the softer part. The melody on that part of the song is really nice. I think the thing I like the most is the vocal melody.

Green Carnation – High Tide Waves: Weird song. It works well on changing the mood. The string arrangement when the song goes into the soft mood in the middle is beautiful. On some parts it made me a little uneasy, but not the one that’s nice. Overall the song doesn’t hold up well.
