Title: Orcus' Song Roulette v2.0 - A Music Contest: The Sequel
Post by: orcus116 on October 17, 2011, 12:25:05 AM
Orcus' Song Roulette v2.0

Introduction:
Welcome! It's been well over a year since the original roulette and things are going to be quite different this time around. I started writing down a list of themes and scrapped them when I came up with a much more fun idea. The whole concept of any roulette is randomization, which can come in many ways. Most, if not all, song roulettes of past had rounds with themes, some challenging, some at the player's discretion, and was left up to a simple judging. I decided it would be more entertaining to take power away from a player to varying degrees.

This time around my roulette will serve as more of a game show than a judging contest, though I'll still judge songs at the end. The way songs fall into my lap will rely on more guesswork and decision making on the player's part as well as the other players. In essence it's a more interactive thing. I'm hoping it'll make players think a bit more and utilize their fellow players missteps.

Haven't figured it out yet but will update very soon when the first round is over. Expect similar to last roulette (rankings).

Title: Orcus' Song Roulette v2.0: Round 1 - Shotgun
Post by: orcus116 on October 17, 2011, 12:25:38 AM
Round 1: Shotgun
Selection type: Limited Free-for-all

How this round works:
To be honest the name of the round eludes me since I came up with it in a drunken stupor but it loosely ties to the golf term of the same name. So here's how this round is going to pan out:

1) Each player selects an artist that they think might suit my tastes. It'll be wise to select one you have somewhat of a discography of and more importantly one I probably haven't heard of. Do not disclose which artist you have chosen at this time. I will figure it out eventually.

2) Each player then finds the total number of songs they have by that artist. You can probably do this by highlighting the artist in whatever media player you use. Once you have that number, PM me the number.

3) I am going to take the number and put it in a random number generator using a range from 1 to whatever number you've given me. Whatever number spits out I'll PM back to you and you must send me whatever song that number happens to be in whatever order you have that artist's songs in.

As you can see you might not end up sending me that choice cut you wanted. Maybe I'll end up with it. Maybe a B-side. Maybe a joke track. Who knows? So pick your artists wisely.

Due to the added random nature of the game how do you guys feel about multiple players sending the same artist? I figure I'll let you guys hash this one out. Keep in mind my whole philosophy of the game this time around is not so much to get exposed to new music, though that is a bonus, but to allow players to use their music library, as well as any guessing about my tastes, as a tool against other players. I'll check back tomorrow morning.

Title: Orcus' Song Roulette v2.0: Round 1 Results - Shotgun
Post by: orcus116 on October 19, 2011, 08:46:28 PM
Round 1 Results: Shotgun
Selection type: Limited Free-for-all

Results are in order from least points to most points:

Nekov
Trey Gunn and Marco Minnemann - Pole
Oh man you got screwed by the round. It's a smile worthy quirk piece but there's not a whole lot to digest.  Clearly more of a filler than anything. Some nice bass and drum work, though.

dethklok09
The Devil Wears Prada - "Big Wiggy Style"
Though the song gets some props for referencing one of my favorite albums as an eleven year old, immediately the guitar tone is one I find generic and devoid of originality (tone-wise). There were some redeeming riffs in the song but my biggest problem with genres like this is the complete lack of identity between songs and even bands for that matter. So while I'd consider this a tolerable listen it's one genre I tend to steer completely clear of unless someone happens to be playing it.

Perpetual Change
Cynic - "Nunc Stans"
One of the bands I've heard in prog metal circles but never really listened to outside of them opening for Between The Buried And Me. I gotta admit the track itself is kind of underwhelming, though I can imagine as an album closer maybe it fits better in context with the album. The biggest problem is the vocals don't really interest me at all. His vocal tone is just...there, and the mix is soft in that regards. I'll give Focus a listen one of these days regardless.

Ravenheart
The Cruxshadows - "Winterborn (Subway to Sally Mix)"
Oh look I reeled in a remix! Honestly the first thing that came to my mind was Age Of Empires 2 and that's not a bad thing since the music in that game ruled. So AOE2 mixed with Sneaker Pimps/Massive Attack sounds about right. The songs stripped down sound does work in its favor to give it a unique sound but at times it can sound a bit goofy. The only problem is it goes on for a little too long. I did go and check out the original out of pure curiosity and man what a difference between the two.

MasterShakezula
Return To Forever - "Medieval Overture"
At first it reminded me of Emerson, Lake, and Palmer, or what little I've heard of them. The instrumentation seems solid all around but the keys are a bit much for my taste. They've got that "quirky Rudess" vibe I'm not too fond of. I do appreciate the jazz elements but it's a little too meandering for my tastes.

Gorille85
dredg - "Not That Simple"
This tickles my alternative rock fancy quite well. I had actually heard about dredg ever since Catch Without Arms came out but never gave them much of a chance. What I liked with this song is how laid back everything is but how well layered it is even if it's a bit pop rocky. The vocals aren't too bad but not spectacular and the chorus treads a bit into generic rock territory. Still not a bad listen at all.

antigoon
My Morning Jacket - "Easy Morning Rebel"
I have no idea why I liked this song as much as I did but it might have something to do with how easy going it was. I do have a soft spot for stuff like this and it quite delivered. And the horns, oh yes, the horns added that little something extra. What really made the song was the ending and man did that ever slay.

zxlkho
dredg - "Same Ol' Road"
As with "Not That Simple" I dug the alternative rock vibe but the groove really did it for me with this song. There was also very subtle elements of things I love in music all throughout the song which was a huge plus. The simplicity of the middle of the song in particular works in its favor and really clicks. Vocals are still a tad iffy but I can get used to them.

The Tally:

8 - zxlkho
7 - antigoon
6 - Gorille85
5 - MasterShakezula
4 - Ravenheart
3 - Perpetual Change
2 - dethklok9
1 - Nevok

As far as the genre goes, yeah i agree at times it does get kinda hard to find originality, and distinguish between songs and bands at first, but after a while it get's much easier.

Well for me atleast

Also, the vocals are a bit hard to get used to, but Gavin Hayes is one of my favorite vocalists. He's really phenomenal live too.

Yeah, exactly.

And, I while I had an issue with the vocals at first, by the time you make it through the album and get to the last song it doesn't really matter anymore.
Title: Orcus' Song Roulette v2.0: Round 2 - Before and After
Post by: orcus116 on October 19, 2011, 09:05:36 PM
Round 2: Before and After
Selection type: Free-for-all

"Man that sounds exactly like that Puff Daddy song!"
   - Every 15 year old hearing "Kashmir" for the first time

How this round works:
From the very beginning I wanted to do a round with cover songs. Then I thought, why not try to find a way to distinguish a good cover (The Raconteurs amazing cover of "Bang Bang" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xhGnuHuD5Fc)) from just a karaoke of the original (Killswitch Engage doing "Holy Diver" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NR7dG_m3MsI&ob=av2e)). So this is how the round is going to work:

1) Each player selects a cover version of a song to send to me. On top of sending the cover version of the song they must also send the original version of the song. I will be comparing both to each other but only pitting the cover versions against each other in judging.

2) So why send the original? Well you can like but not love the cover version of a song. Maybe it adds something to the song but the original is more your style. In any case after I'm done judging the songs I will ask all players to send to me whether they like the cover version or the original version better. I will already have made my choice by this point so if we end up in agreement you get a bonus point.

Also a little hint if you want: might do good to research a little bit around the forums on how I take my covers. I can't recall exact posts but I know they're out there. Good luck!

Title: Orcus' Song Roulette v2.0: Round 2 Results - Before and After
Post by: orcus116 on October 25, 2011, 04:59:16 AM
Round 2 Results: Before and After
Selection type: Free-for-all

Results are in order from least points to most points:

zxlkho
Death - "Painkiller" (Judas Priest)
When I saw the two bands and that the song lengths were similar I just knew how this was going to turn out. Metal bands are generally the worst at doing covers because they're so enamored with their idols they emulate more than anything. So unfortunately instead of something cool with their talents we pretty much get "Painkiller with Death vocals in a different key". Just really not my thing.
Were we in agreement: No

Nekov
Demons and Wizards - "Immigrant Song" (Original by Led Zeppelin)
This is going to sound very strange because it breaks every single rule I've made for covers (in terms of being just a karaoke) but I think this actually comes off better as a power metal produced song. While I do like the Zeppelin version a lot it just seems to fit this genre well. Obviously it's a short song so there's not much to say but yeah that about sums it up.
Were we in agreement: Yes

antigoon
Stacy Dupree - "Silver Springs" (Original by Fleetwood Mac)
So a little more traditional of a cover than I would've liked but I gotta admit I liked her voice more than Stevie Nicks'. The song moves in a very pleasant way and I must say has a bit more power than the Fleetwood Mac version which has, well, that Fleetwood Mac flair of folky type English rock. It seemed about the right length and was pleasant but all in all what you see is what you get and it was just a very nice little song.
Were we in agreement: Yes

Ravenheart
Anathema - "Better Off Dead" (Original by Bad Religion)
Ok so this was cool. What do you do with a punk song? Why slow it down to a piano ballad of course! The vocals were pretty good although spotty in parts. Lyrically I think the song works in both regards. Pretty standard in terms of piano ballads go musically but I'll give it a lot of credit for completely turning the original around. I do like the faster pace of the Bad Religion version slightly more though.
Were we in agreement: No

MasterShakezula
Chicago - "I'm A Man" (Original by The Spencer Davis Group)
I'm not as well versed in Chicago as I should be being a fan of classic rock but I did take to this cover. Coming from back in the day when cover songs came out mere years, if not months, from the originals the styles of the song remains much in tack but there's definitely much more going on in the Chicago version, mostly good but not without faults. I understand why the band took it in a more pronounced direction in extending it to a jam but not really being one for drum solos I found it a little hard to appreciate. Still not a bad cover just a bit long.
Were we in agreement: No

Gorille
Mike Patton - "Il Cielo In Una Stanza" (Original by Mina)
I'll admit it, when I was listening to the original knowing full well I'd be hearing Mike Patton doing the cover I got a little excited. I really had no idea what to expect but once the groove set in and the voice started I really started digging it. The vocals are pretty much what I expected but I really loved the subtle modern touches on that 1960s Italian style pop. Very cool.
Were we in agreement: Yes

Perpetual Change
Ben Folds - "Bitches Ain't Shit" (Original by Dr. Dre feat. Snoop Dogg)
I had heard about this cover for years but never had the pleasure of hearing it for myself so I gotta give PC credit for allowing me to. I knew it was coming but I absolutely lost it when he started signing. In fact one of my favorite novelty covers of all time is a spoken word version of "Gin N Juice" so I connected with this real well. The thing that really brings this song together is how well the band gets into it. That level of sincerity just makes it work so well. Oh and the audience guitar choir: yes.
Were we in agreement: Yes

The Tally:

13 - Gorille85
11 - Perpetual Change
11 - antigoon
10 - MasterShakezula
9 - zxlkho
8 - Ravenheart
5 - Nekov
Title: Orcus' Song Roulette v2.0: Round 3 - Genres? Genres!
Post by: orcus116 on October 25, 2011, 05:00:23 AM
Round 3: Genres? Genres!
Selection type: Random

How this round works:

So for some of you you'd like to think that your musical tastes are varied. But exactly how varied? Well to answer that let's leave it up to chance.

All players must PM me two numbers, each between 1 and 12. The numbers must not match and they can include both 1 and 12. Each number is assigned to a particular genre of music. The reason I've decided to choose two is to let the players figure out how they want to deal with their hand. So for example if you end up with "jazz" and "death metal", aside from having a hell of a time trying to find a band to pick from (though I'm sure they're out there) you can either choose to pick a song more geared towards jazz that includes some death metal elements or a death metal song that has some jazz elements. It's completely up to you.

I will be judging based on how well the song picks works within the two genres as well as their quality. So good luck!

I'm so glad the guitar choir worked with you. I was afraid of sending the live version due to the somewhat decreased audio and some mumbling around in the beginning and end. Good thing it paid off!

Ok two (likely dumb-because-I'm-writing-my-thesis-and-can't-think-logically) questions:

What does the are we in agreement mean? I gather something to do with the PMs that went out, but yeah. Problem solved by Nekov.
How did the scoring work that round? Problem solved by doing maths in my head.

Agreed completely. Nearly every metal cover of a metal song I've ever heard has simply been the original updated with the vocal and production style trends of the day.

And letters just remember it doesn't have to be exactly 50/50. It can be as low as like 90/10 as long as some elements are clearly there.

Post by: orcus116 on October 27, 2011, 06:45:54 PM
Round 3 Results: Genres? Genres!
Selection type: Random

Results are in order from least points to most points:

zxlkho
Genres: Rap, Metal
Skindred - "Pressure"
I had a good laugh when you originally picked this because not only does it exist as a genre but it's one of the least liked genres in terms of people who take music seriously. As for the song itself I kind of got a Stone Temple Pilot/Incubus vibe off the vocals and I definitely see what you mean by it being more reggae than rap. So it does cover the metal part but yeah I dunno if it's truly rap in that respects. I'll give it a partial pass since it does sound a little like what most would consider rap metal but on a whole not really my thing.

Ravenheart
Genres: Country, Metal
Desperadoz - "Rawhide"
Metallica called, they want their singer back. But seriously you did get stuck with an interesting mix that, well, I'm sure there are bands out there but I can't think of really any. You did get both genres in one place but unfortunately this really wasn't my cup of tea. Sent out of necessity, I know, but hey at least you got something in!

Gorille85
Genres: Indie, Rock
Bright Eyes - "Bowl of Oranges"
Well didn't you luck out! I've always heard of Bright Eyes but never got a chance to listen to them until now. A nice little folky and what people would consider "indie" sound though I didn't get too much of the rock. I guess I was expecting more of an alternative rock kinda thing for this but the song wasn't bad. I definitely want to go back and check out the lyrics since I got a good vibe from the few passages I did manage to listen real close to.

Nekov
Genres: Electronica, Metal
Moonlight Comedy - "The Sea And Time In Mars"
This did well in having elements of both of the genres. For a while there I thought the traditional prog metal synths were the "electronica" but some of the breakdowns proved otherwise. The guitar actually played some interesting lines though the tone was a little too "tin can" sounding for me. The voice overs were a bit strange but the song didn't seem to take itself too seriously so I didn't mind. A little too all over the place but it packed quite a decent little punch.

Perpetual Change
Genres: Rap, Reggae
Nas and Damien Marley - "Friends"
Coming from someone who doesn't really dabble in either genre too seriously I can almost see this one being tough and easy at the same time. From the get go the beat sounds exactly like what a perfect harmony between the two, real laid back but powerful on the back end. What's so funny about this song is that when Damien Marley is singing it sounds reggae and when Nas is spittin' it sounds like a rap song. Overall I dig the song, not something I'd listen to all the time but I'm always looking for something chill like this.

MasterShakezula
Genres: Jazz, Classical
Modern Jazz Quartet - "Sketch"
Well wasn't this an odd pairing considering both styles share the same techniques of music but often in different directions. I must say that the whole concept of the song, jazz in the left channel and classical in the right, turned out really cool. I wasn't too sure how this was going to go together until around the middle when the two sides were playing off of each other and damn it was rather awesome. Very good job.

antigoon
Genres: Jazz, Electronica
Jaga Jazzist - "Airborne"
Man, this was just up my alley. More jazz than electronica but the constant pulsing beat made it work just right. There's nothing really more I can say about this song other than the layers that work on top of each other in the middle of the song and the explosion towards the end come across as awesomely slick and just plain enjoyable.

The Tally:

18 - antigoon
16 - Gorille85
16 - Perpetual Change
16 - MasterShakezula
10 - zxlkho
10 - Ravenheart
9 - Nekov

Title: Orcus' Song Roulette v2.0: Round 4 - The Great Roulette Song Swap
Post by: orcus116 on October 27, 2011, 10:16:35 PM
Round 4: The Great Roulette Song Swap
Selection type: Randomized Free-for-all

How this round works:

I've been going back and forth on where I wanted to play this round but since I still need to tweak the other rounds we'll play it now. So here's a round that's going to mimic a gift exchange game most people have played before: Yankee Swap aka White Elephant Swap (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_elephant_gift_exchange). It's a complete free-for-all but here's how it's going to go down.

1) Players will select a song, any song. Once they've made their selection they're going to send the song to me as usual. At this point I'm going to randomize the order of players. This will determine the order you get to select the song you will actually be judged on.

2) For those of you who don't know what a Yankee/White Elephant gift swap is this is how the rest of the round goes. Each song will get a letter, from A to G, and I will tell each player what letter the song they sent me is. Player 1 will go and he will have an opportunity to select whatever song he wants, A through G, though he'll obviously only really know which song is his if he so chooses to pick that. Once he makes his choice Player 2 will go. That player will then select a song and then have the opportunity to either keep that song or swap that song with Player 1's song. So each time a player selects a song they can either keep that song or swap with any other player that has picked before him.

3) Once everyone has a song I will judge the songs and points will be awarded based on whatever you get, not what you submitted. Because of this this round has the potential to be a big point turner for some people.

I can see some people considering this round a little harsh but if you have noticed certain players that seem to cater to my tastes this is your opportunity to potentially nab one of their songs. This round will also be public since I don't want to go through a mess of PMs. Good luck guys and I await your choices!

Title: Orcus' Song Roulette v2.0: Round 4 Results - The Great Roulette Song Swap
Post by: orcus116 on November 05, 2011, 06:25:21 PM
Round 4 Results: The Great Roulette Song Swap
Selection type: Random

Results are in order from least points to most points:

Ravenheart
Sylvan - "For One Day"
Man I just really did not get into this song at all. It was like an attempt at pop rock but just came across as a little too bland. I think the vocals were the real key in me not really liking it. The guy's voice just rubbed me the wrong way. The instrumentation wasn't all that creative either.

antigoon
Dominici - "Greed, The Evil Seed"
This reminded me of Train Of Thought more than anything. Hits pretty much every prog metal cliche in the book without fail and despite the fact that the lyrics obviously tie into some concept album I can't imagine them being very good even in context. There are some cool guitar parts (classical guitar thing in the middle of the song). It's alright as a song though I wouldn't actively seek it out to listen to it.

Nekov
VAST - "Here"
The change from the intro to the song really threw me. At first I didn't like it but then I started to dig the industrial metal sound. There wasn't much to the song but the breakdowns were kinda interesting. I wasn't overly impressed with the song but I could see myself listening to it from time to time.

Perpetual Change
Florence + The Machine - "Shake It Out"
There's something about female vocals that, if done right, sounds absolutely incredible. The vocals were really good on this song so that definitely worked in its favor. The instrumentation was pretty cool though I dunno if I was really sold by the tribal type sound in the chorus. Still overall a nice little song with a lot of power behind it.

MasterShakezula
Frank Zappa - "Peaches En Regalia"
Now this was a cool little tune. A little mix of mild funk with jazz and latin influences. It grooved real good and had a nice chill atmosphere. It's almost as if someone suggested that they try to find every instrument available and have them solo. In any case it was a cool song in a neat, short package.

Gorille85
Unexpect - "A Fading Stance/When The Joyful Dead Are Dancing/Until Yet A Few More Deaths Do Us Part"
Before anyone says anything I had to take Gorille's word on these three songs being a suite. I've heard much of Unexpect on this forum so this was a nice thing to get to listen to. What really peaked my interest was the chaos during the second song. I mean I'm used to BTBAM type back and forth but this took it to another level. The instrumentation was surprisingly top notch and each part was clearly audible, impressive for what was happening within the song. The real star of the show has got to be the fiddle. For some reason it just kept the whole tone of the suite together.

zxlkho
Mew - "Comforting Sounds
Mew's another band I've heard a lot about but never really bothered to check them out. Right from the get go this tickled my indie rock fancy. By the time the second half of the song hit I was already hooked. There's not a whole lot to really say about this song but it really did it for me. Very good pick.

The Tally:

22 - Gorille85
21 - MasterShakezula
20 - antigoon
20 - Perpetual Change
17 - zxlkho
12 - Nekov
11 - Ravenheart

Title: Orcus' Song Roulette v2.0: Round 5 - Apples to Apples
Post by: orcus116 on November 06, 2011, 04:22:11 PM
Round 5: Apples to Apples
Selection type: Free-for-all

How this round works:

As with the last round, this round is based off a party game. For any of you that have never played Apples to Apples it's a card game in which a person throws down an adjective card and everyone else anonymously throws down a noun card they think best relates to that adjective card. It's a game mainly based around humor so a noun card like "Choir Boys" might end up winning if the adjective card is "Delicious" (this actually happened and won at a game I was playing).

So I'm going to make a modified version of this kind of game. Instead of one adjective I'm going to throw out a sentence fragment. Your job as the player is to finish the sentence fragment with a song title. The round is a free-for-all but you're limited in how well you can complete the sentence. This is partially based around humor though I'll see how well the song title works just in general. Good luck!

Sentence fragment:

Behind every great man, there is...

Title: Orcus' Song Roulette v2.0: Round 5 Results - Apples to Apples
Post by: orcus116 on November 07, 2011, 06:41:34 PM
Round 5 Results: Apples to Apples
Selection type: Free-for-all

Results are in order from least points to most points:

MasterShakezula
Behind every great man, there is...
"Lemmings" (Van Der Graaf Generator)
While there were parts of this song I liked it seemed to go on for quite some time. There was a time when prog like this would've captured my interest but I think that time has passed. The jazzy bits were cool, especially with the dissonance play but the rest was just alright. Sorry to say but this became background noise more often than not.

Ravenheart
Behind every great man, there is...
[a] "Mad Girl" (Emilie Autumn)
I dunno what to say about this song. The vocals were fairly well done though coupled with the music I don't know if I really connected with the song. It was pleasant, inoffensive but not something I can see myself going back to voluntarily.

Perpetual Change
Behind every great man, there is...
[a] "Crew Slut" (Frank Zappa)
Haha what the hell? I should've figured since Zappa definitely is one of those quirky musicians with a good sense of humor. Musically I dug the fairly upbeat and bluesy feel of the song. It did seem to meander in the middle but it did pick up at the end. Not sure how I feel about the talking parts though they did make me grin.

antigoon
Behind every great man, there is...
[a] "Constipated Duck" (Jeff Beck)
Nice little 70s groove going on, especially with that cop show clav happening in the background. The interplay between the background instruments was cool, especially since they were doing their own thing over top the guitar solo. Seems more of an interlude track than anything but in that regards it works well.

Nekov
Behind every great man, there is...
[a] "Paradox" (Kansas)
Some neat old school prog with some rather cool interplay between the violins and the keys all throughout the song. My knowledge of Kansas is rather limited so this was nice little exposure. Way closer to the type of Yes-like 70s prog I like than some other I've heard. Offered just the right amount though I would've liked to hear some more guitar stuff.

zxlkho
Behind every great man, there is...
"Birth Pains of Astral Projection" (maudlin of the Well)
Well this song certainly has an identity all unto itself. At first I thought the song was going to continue with its Zora's Palace type island groove but the heavy part took me by surprise. I must say the vocals do sound slightly out of place part of the time but like Agalloch I could see myself getting quickly used to them. I really liked the density of this song and man did it sure travel through styles. I really have to look into this band more.

Gorille85
Behind every great man, there is...
[a] "Porn Piece or the Scars of Cold Kisses" (Ulver)
I keep getting a lot of band this roulette I've been meaning to get into and Ulver is no exception. I had heard about this album being the a big change from their older black metal roots. I really love this kind of dark, electronica tone in songs so from the get go the song got my attention. Reminded me a lot of Mezzanine by Massive Attack which is an awesome album. Not much else I can really say about this song other than it was great.

Bonus Point:
While some were flat out ridiculous to the point where I couldn't help but win I had to give it to "Lemmings". I think the visual did it for me.

The Tally:

29 - Gorille85
24 - antigoon
23 - Perpetual Change
23 - zxlkho
23 - MasterShakezula (+1 for winning the title bonus point)
17 - Nekov
13 - Ravenheart

I'm surprised you haven't been liking Ravenheart's submissions very much, though.

Title: Orcus' Song Roulette v2.0: Round 6 - Song Roulette
Post by: orcus116 on November 07, 2011, 10:28:48 PM

Round 6: Song Roulette
Selection type: Free-for-all

How this round works:

What made me reconsider the entire concept of a song roulette was to make it more of a random game so I thought to myself, what could possibly be the most random thing aside from a straight up free-for-all? Well after coming up with several of the rounds I decided to create something a little more devious and go for a little wager deal.

Players will submit a song, any song they choose. Along with the choice a player can choose to wager anywhere from 0 to 10 points. That player will be awarded those points only if they meet certain criteria, so rankings don't mean anything this round. How I am going to judge the songs is based on whether or not a song contains the criteria in which I want to judge it. For example say I have decided that I'm looking for a song with male vocals and a player submits an instrumental song they will receive none of the points they have wagered and those points will get subtracted from their total.

Now the criteria I have selected is not a farfetched one and is relatively common so I'm not going to pick something like a polka breakdown or something ridiculous, but you need to be careful. No hints will be given. Good luck.

Title: Orcus' Song Roulette v2.0: Round 6 Results - Song Roulette
Post by: orcus116 on November 14, 2011, 09:27:51 PM
Round 6 Results: Song Roulette
Selection type: Free-for-all

For this round the criteria the song had to meet was:
Contain a guitar solo

Songs that met the criteria, in order of wager (lowest to highest):

Gorille85
Wager: 4 Points
Diablo Swing Orchestra - "A Tap Dancer's Dilemma"
I've heard of these guys but I'm not sure I was ready for it. Though once the guitars hit I was hooked, what an awesome style. Just plain damn fun music. Nice like clean guitar solo in the middle and the whole thing grooved really well. Horns were awesome. Full points.

Nekov
Wager: 10 Points
Haken - "Insomnia"
I had a Haken song last roulette I believe and unfortunately while I can appreciate the obvious musical talents of the members I'm not as into this type of music as I used to be. I did like the fullness of the sound although it was a bit over-produced. Reminded me a lot of Scenes/Octavarium Dream Theater though unlike most prog metal acts I've heard they didn't ape that style too much. Did contain a guitar solo so full points.

Songs that did not meet the criteria, in order of wager (lowest to highest):

MasterShakezula
Wager: 0 Points
Sigur Ros - "Starálfur"
I'd give you all remaining points because this song is just so damn beautiful, plus it made the ending to "The Life Aquatic", one of my favorite movies, so much more depressing. Everything about the song is so well done, especially the main piano line and the strings overlaid on top. I've heard about the lyrics (Hopelandic or whatever the band calls it) and it's just overall so pleasant sounding. There was no guitar solo but no wager so no loss. Great song.

antigoon
Wager:  3 Points
The Avett Brothers - "I And Love And You"
I've been meaning to try more Americana/folk type stuff so this was a nice little treat. The music was nice if not a bit of standard fare for this style of music but the real power was in the lyrics and the vocal delivery, both very effective. Unfortunately no guitar solo so no points.

Perpetual Change
Wager: 4 Points
Bob Dylan - "Oh Sister"
Dylan's such a hit or miss with me, though I'll at least stick around to listen all the way through since I do like his song writing for the most part (it's the voice that kills me). The interplay between the vocals was actually pretty neat in this song. It had the slow drawl of a Neil Young song but still keeping with that Dylan style, something I can get behind. Unfortunately while it did have a harmonica solo there wasn't a guitar solo. No points.

Ravenheart
Wager: 5 Points
Sarah Fimm - "In the Red"
This was cool right from the get go. Some electronic beats, jazz horns, great female lead vocals, what an awesome combo. I was actually really close to making the criteria horns which would've been great for this but unfortunately it just didn't work out. No points but if it makes you feel better Raven I would've ranked this very high.

zxlkho
Wager: 10 Points
Manchester Orchestra - "Simple Math"
Right off the bat it reminded me of No-man though it did change into more alt rock type stuff. Definitely struck all the right chords and made me want to check this band out. The vocals actually worked well for me and fit the style really well. Unfortunately there was no guitar solo so no points.

The Tally:

33 - Gorille85
27 - Nekov
23 - MasterShakezula
21 - antigoon
19 - Perpetual Change
13 - zxlkho
8 - Ravenheart

Title: Orcus' Song Roulette v2.0: Round 7 - Soundtrack

Round 7: Soundtrack
Selection type: Free-for-all

How this round works:

I've always absorbed music in an almost visual manner, if that makes any sense. I hear a song and immediately I get vivid scenes or fragments that develop into something that seem to mark particular songs, almost like a music video, though it comes off more like a soundtrack to a movie. That's where this round is going.

I was thinking of maybe finding a well known scene with the music removed and having the players add their own soundtrack to it but that might be a little ambitious. Instead I opted for two inoffensive things combined: landscapes and time lapses. Each player will submit a song they think best serves as a soundtrack to the video. I am aware that the video already has a song but just mute the damn thing.

Some things to remember:

1) You do not have to go the full length of the video.

2) Completely open ended so feel free to think outside the box.

This will be the last round as I've run out of ideas. Good luck.

Title: Orcus' Song Roulette v2.0: Round 7 Results - Soundtrack
Post by: orcus116 on November 27, 2011, 10:04:44 PM
Round 7 Results: Soundtrack
Selection type: Free-for-all

Results are in order from least points to most points:

MasterShakezula
Tangerine Dream - Movements of a Visionary
Well this was certainly different. The ethereal beginning really threw me but once the song picked up I can see what it was setting up. The song kind of meandered, to be honest, and while there were some cool parts it just didn't hook me. Did work with the video, although the beginning made it somewhat humorous because of how that part is written.

Perpetual Change
Bon Iver - Woods
I must admit the vocoder really threw me right as soon as the song started. I didn't quite get 100% used to it but the layering was really cool throughout the song, especially where the song picks up. Matched the video very well in a serene kind of way, almost the perfect type of music for the scenery.

Nekov
Anathema - Everything
As with Oceansize I've heard very little material from this band but I can definitely see why people like it. The instrumentation was very good, especially the piano lines and I really liked the interplay between the male and female vocals. Fit the video very well.

zxlkho
Oceansize - Ornament/The Last Wrongs
I've heard very little Oceansize but I do see what I've been missing and it sounded great. The contrast in dynamics throughout the song was perfectly paced and the individual sections were damn cool. This went along really well with the video, especially the beginning part and the softer sections.

antigoon
Bersarin Quartett - Mehr Als Alles Andere
Classical and electronica? Very unusual but you seem to know my tastes by now and I really dig this. The beginning was a nice little prep for the middle part where each part of the song kinda goes off and does its own thing. I might have to check out more of this kind of stuff. As with the rest this matched up with the video very well.

Ravenheart
Anathema - 2000 & Gone
I was a little hesitant when I received two Anathema songs but I decided to see how they'd stack up. I must say I liked this one a little more and it's probably because of how laid back the song was. A very nice listen and worked well with the video.

Gorille85
Her Name Is Calla - Pour More Oil
Man this was just majestic as hell. Great build up, awesome somber mood, great layering. Reminds me that I need to delve deeper into the post-rock genre more. The mood of the song matched the video very well.

The Tally:

40- Gorille85
30 - Nekov
26 - antigoon
24 - MasterShakezula
21 - Perpetual Change
17 - zxlkho
14 - Ravenheart

Congratulations to:

Gorille85

Thanks everyone for participating and your patience for my laziness in certain spots.
