Title: Submotion Orchestra (trip hop/dubstep/jazz/female vocals)
Post by: zxlkho on September 21, 2011, 02:31:27 PM
Has anyone here heard of these guys? They released their debut album Finest Hour earlier this year. I just listened to it yesterday for the first time and was blown away. I'm not normally into dubstep in any way, but it's used very subtly here, and works really well with the trip hop beats, trumpet, and piano.

"Back Chat" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lcvIAgrLXjY)
"All Yours" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SY7PfdUDGHU)
"Secrets" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RODkfrwoBZk&feature=related)

Cool to see this thread here, as I'm really into them at the moment. A beautiful girl who I'm kind of going with now introduced me to them. Funny to see you also linked to my favorite two tracks of the album. Can't get enough of the trumpet solo in 'All Yours', the moment when the beat drops back in. Magical.

Great stuff to relax to, sensual music.

Yeah man, that trumpet solo really stuck out for me. That's why I chose the song. :P

I've heard this album about 4 times now, and it's blowing me away more each time.

I have to say this is the most enjoyable dubstep-related music I've heard. Together with Burial, but that's totally different in style.

Yeah this, Bural, and James Blake are the only semi-dubstep things I enjoy.

Have you tried Magnetic Man? It's dubstep, although this track is not but I think it's one of their best.

i've heard 3 of the tracks off the album. i heard about them through a friend and was well, quite frankly, blown away by them! not usually into dubstep or that type of music but this band is certainly something else. need to listen through this album when i get the time!

I don't have anything like this in my collection and I'm quite intrigued. Thanks for bringing them to my attention.

I would describe it as hypnotically soothing.

Yeah, thanks man. This is the type of music I was looking for, which is the style like these guys, Massive Attacks Teardrop, and Buckethead Waiting Hare and Coma.

The beauty of these songs can only be achieved with a female vocalist.

Meh, it's actually one of my least favorites Massive Attack songs.

It's a really interesting sound. I like Backchat better than All Yours from the two posted, but they were both pretty sick! Will definitely check out the whole album sometime soon

This thread needs a bump because this band rules and they released one of my favorite albums of the year.

Enjoy it!

Just got the new album Fragments and I'm really liking it.

Its elegantly beautifully and I think I even like it better then Finest hour.

The new album is excellent. Anyone who likes the band, I recommend checking it out.

Its called Alium and it came out last week.

This band is on fire. 3 albums and 1 EP, and all are really good. The new one doesn't top Fragments for me, but it is another strong effort.

Fragments is probably actually my least favourite, but agreed that all 4 albums are amazing. They've become one of my absolute favourite bands - I haven't heard any other downtempo/electronic groups that have nearly the same warmth and atmosphere in their music. Alium is another great addition!

Went to their London gig a few weeks ago, but was hugely disappointed by the sound. I think it's entirely the venue rather than the band (a friend of mine went to another gig the week after and had the exact same thing) but it was just so loud it made us feel ill. First song or two the bass was overpowering and distorting everything, so the sound guys seemed to balance it out by turning everything else up, which just made it sound and feel horrible. We had to leave after about half an hour. It was such a shame as they create such wonderful music, but they were massively let down.

Tomorrow the new Submotion Orchestra album comes out tomorrow. Color theory

I don't know how much Ruby wood is involved with the album, as there are a lot of guest vocalists. Hopefully I am wrong. I will know for sure tomorrow.

I quite like Finest Hour, so I hope the new one is as good at least

It's a great album. Ruby sings on maybe half the tracks? Or maybe it just felt like it, but her presence is there through the album despite guests.

Overall I love the band and would probably rank their albums:

Finest Hour
Fragments
(1968)
Colour Theory
Alium
(EP III)

Very tough choice between the first two. Fragments has my favorite Submo song (Thousand Yard Stare) but Finest Hour was such a great debut and is probably the one that has grown on me the most.

Oh good. I'm glad she is on there. I haven't heard anything besides what was available to preview so far.

Haven't fully heard the new one yet, but as far as my ranking goes:

1. Alium- I am madly in love with this album
2. (1968) (Hard to stay is amazing)

3. Tie between  Finest hour and fragments

4. (EP III)
