Title: Mr. Shake's Roulette: The End is Here!
Post by: MasterShakezula on September 20, 2011, 09:11:23 PM
(https://troll.me/images/cup/its-over-yall-suck-except-for-dtvt.jpg)

Well, here it is.  These stooges will be providing tunes:

Patrick
deathkok
LLTWM
Hayden  (Was eaten by real life) RIP
21st Century Crimson Fan
Anime (or manga; was it taken from an animation or a still comic?) avatar guy
jAZZBo
Nekov
Pee Cee (Causality of time restraints)  RIP
DTVT
zilcho
James (he seems to be implying that he may want in; James, if you send in a song for round 1, I'll rate it and you'll be an official contestant.) (He was joking)
Jay (he decided to hop in, and I'm a generous fellow)
and obscure (the first girl in a roulette? ^^)
C_S (he replaced Personal Computer)
Cole (he decided to make an audacious statement just see what would happen.  His now being in the roulette is what happened.

One thing; I do not have a Last.fm.  What I am doing is picking categories that will be unlikely to overlap with stuff I've already heard.

There will be 8 rounds, because it's the lowest cube of a positive whole # above 1.

The categories will come as the rounds come.

This first round is:

Pick something from the year you were born!

Give me your very best and make it sexy!  Always!

If you're going to be this enthusiastic about a roulette you didn't even apply for, I'll go ahead and add you.

But I'll only do it if you ask me.  Or outright state your desire.

Is there a time limit?

Try to send them in within the next couple days.  Don't hold it up for a week like I did those couple times.

I'll be pretty lenient with it, though.  I'd only be docking points for taking a week or more.

Nah, not that. Like on the song length.

Not at all.  You can do whatever you want with this stuff.  I'll listen to it and rate whatever you send in.  If I've heard it before, I'll send a message saying so, but, as I don't have a last.fm, you're not required to send in something different, as I can understand the sort of frustration this issue may cause for you.  I will rate a familiar song just as I would an unfamiliar song.

Hey hang on a minute!  That's not fair sir... When there is lady involved who never shares her age.... you cannot make her share it.... it would be rude!   :-X
So options:
a) I'll give you a song in a 10-year-range in which I was born... it will be sexy promise
b) I'll pick something from the year YOU were born
c) I'll skip this round  :'(
d) Spider can come back and replace me for a round
e) I'll throw in the towel, go and burn myself  :'(

Gen: I'm guessing those birds in your sig are from that anime as well?

(If that's "penguin" I see in the title, I may just have to check it out.  If there's an English version.)

As of right now, I've received 10 outta 13 (Actually 14, though I think James was possibly joking about joining) , and I've managed to listen to them all closely at least once.  So, I just need 4 more, and I'll be able to evaluate all of them relative to one another and post results within a day of receiving the last song.

No offense to cup, but that's the other half of why I quit. I had a hard time giving 8 songs per round the chance they deserved. No way in hell cup's going to be giving 12 songs a fair shot. And, considering all the work I would have had to do to come up with a pick given his strange categories, I didn't feel the investment was worth it.

Alright pretty girl and boys of variable attractiveness; the results are in!  ^^  (like an hour and a half later than I said, but, eh, I felt like teasing you first)

The way it goes is I gave everyone a rating out of 10 based on how much I liked it.  Pretty strong lineup, mostly, this round!   :D

zxhlko: Aphex Twin- We Are The Music Makers; Chill track.  I'd never heard this artist's work before, though I've heard people rave about it.  Was interesting to hear various parts come in and out and for these ideas to develop over time on top of a constant groove.  I didn't like it as much as say, Kraftwerk, but I liked it a good deal and would be open to hearing more of his stuff.

8.0/10

DTVT: Van Halen- Runnin' With The Devil; I am somewhat familiar with VH, but I've not heard this tune, though; only the 1984  and Diver Down albums.  I'd say this tune is better than much of the stuff off of those 2 albums.  Very catchy and memorable song with great guitar work (as expected) from the eponymous ax-man.  Makes me want to catch up with the rest of the real VH's discography.

8.5/10

Jay Octavarium: Soundgarden- Slaves And Bulldozers; I am familiar with these guys, being an enjoy-er of grunge, though I only have their last 2 albums, so this song is new to me.  Solid, doomy feel throughout.  I like the atmosphere of it, though it is rather straightforward.  I like the drumming a lot; that's something I really enjoyed about the 2 or so songs I've actually heard off of the record this one's off of.  Not necessarily the best Soundgarden song I've heard, but it's Soundgarden, so it's still good.

8.0/10

obscure: Iced Earth- Meloncholy; Good going; you've picked out quite the tune here!  (You're also apparently 13; nice to see that you've gottn into real music early on.)  Great balladry going on there; the singer sounds very into it, and they energy level is tops.  This is definitely an example of power metal done right!  I've heard one of their early albums with an almost completely different lineup, and found it great, but this is a step up!

9/10

Nekov: Frank Zappa- Night School; I've never heard any of his Synthclavier stuff.  Definitely a different beast than his psychodelic stuff or fusion stuff or stuff stuff.  I like the vibe/basic groove, and as it builds up, I really get into it.  I can't get enough of those crazy leads once they reach the sort of climax energy level!  Very cool choice, man; Zappa was always innovating and making great music in the process.

9/10

Genowyn: Pantera- Cemetery Gates; I like Pantera.  I have Vulgar Display and Far Beyond Driven, but not Cowboys ( I have heard the title track and Psycho Holiday a lot).  This is one of the better songs I've heard by them.  I like the buildup.  The ballady section is good, but it really hits it when things get heavy.  Very good choice!

8.5/10

PuffyPat: Dr. Dre- Nothin' but a G Thang; Sorry to say, man, but rap doesn't get me off.  I do like the synth melodies that were sampled throughout the tune, so that's something.

4/10

SPNKr: Depache Mode- Personal Jesus;  I liked.  It was very catchy and synth-poppy, yet also rockin and spooky!  I also enjoyed the lyricisms.  Pop done well.  Looks like this is an artist I should check out more of.

8.0/10

LLTWM: Bruce Dickinson- Tears of the Dragon; Dude, yes!  I am a big fan of Maiden but have never really tried out any of Bruce's solo stuff until now.  Let's just say this: Maiden is a band that's rarely failed to please me, and more often than not, they've really impressed me.  This song would be a total standout in their discography had Bruce recorded it with them!

10/10

C_s: Billy Joel- Sleeping With The Television On; Another good song.  I've heard very little by him, so I didn't really know what to expect.  Got some chill, new-wave-y, pop rock.  Catchy, nice lyrics, good song overall.  This is pretty much a perfect example of solid 80s popular rock, in a good way.  I need more by that dude.

8.0/10

Numbers: Down- Stone The Crow; I really liked this one!  I like Pantera, I like stoner rock, there's no reason the combo of the 2 shouldn't be good.  It's pretty cool to see a 70s southern feel mixed with teh groove metal.  Especially when it works.   Very memorable, and makes me want to check Down out some more.

8.5/10

dethklok: Anal Cunt- Living Colour is my Favorite Black Metal Band; Lulz were had.  I didn't know what he was saying though.  If he enunciated clearer, it would of gotten a higher score.

6.0/10

King In Crimson: Black Sabbath- Zero The Hero; I love early Sabbath up to 81.  Never heard Born Again.  Sounds like their fling with Ian Gillan must of turned out quite well.  This song is very cool.  That main riff is very cool, and the echoe-y production gives it a nifty atmosphere.  The lyrics are also very clever.  The chorus kills, as well, as does the part where Bill's doing that triplet-y stuff with his drums.

8.5/10

So, there you go, guys.  You did a good job, overall, this first round.

Rankings:

1. LLTWM 10.0
2. obscure 9.0
    Nekov
    Genowyn
3. DTVT 8.5
    Cole
    King in Crimson
4. zxhlko 8.0
    Jay
    SPNKr
    C_s
5. dethklok 6.0
6. Jigglypuff 4.0
7. Hayden 0.0 (If he sends in his song for the next round and one for this first round with it, I'll give him points for it, out of generosity.)

So, round 2 is:

Modern rock.  It can be whatever you define as being great and outstanding rock (prog, non-prog, metal, whatever) of the last decade or so, or whatever you'd say is modern.

Suit Up!

As it should have.

Also, do you guys realize what a MASSIVE handicap I had by having 1978 AND obeying the rule of the round? 1978 was the height of fucking disco.  DISCO.

This is going to be such a clusterfuck if cup is going to not use a point spread.

EDIT RANT:

So, round 2 is:

Modern rock.  It can be whatever you define as being great and outstanding rock (prog, non-prog, metal, whatever) of the last decade or so, or whatever you'd say is modern.

So WTF...First you say "modern rock", then you open the definition to include prog and metal.  Three different genres there buddy.  Rock =/= metal.  Modern rock =/= prog rock.

On the Anal Cunt deal, that was the whole idea of the band, to be as provocative and ridiculous as possible.  Him actually enunciating would have ruined it.  He's my inspiration for my own Satyrical grindcore band.

Here's your results.  Everyone did good.  Some even did great.  Overall, a very strong set of songs.  You guys have good taste in music.  You won't get totals just yet, because I'm going to give you a MS Excel chart in a few minutes, as I promised.

Creampuff: A Great Big Pile Of Leafs- We Don't Need Our Heads; I enjoyed this tune a lot.  It works very well as a short composition.  The hooks caught my attention very well, and the instrumentation was quite engaging.  Not proggy, but still had a share of twists that caught me off guard.  Overall, it's a solid tune; I could listen to an album of this stuff and be glad that I did.  Oh yeah, lots of energy going on, as well, which benefits it.

9/10

Bugeyes: The Dear Hunter- Red Hands; Well, I can see why this group gets so much acclaim on this forum.  Very powerful, bombastic, yet often chilled sound, overall.  Great deal of impact with the chorus and its contrast with the more laid back verses.  Also, the bridge buildup into the ending is quite the sort of prog-ish overblown-ness I love, which I often miss when listening to more modern tunes.

9/10

TKIC: The Raconteurs - Consoler of the Lonely; I'm not familiar with the White Stripes, though I know Jack White on this was from them.  About the actual song, now; it's got a very fun and groovy vibe throughout.  Also, very reminiscent of Led Zep, though still quite fresh.  The double time part really adds to the experience, as well.

9/10

Galaga: Oceansize- Unfamiliar; This is very great, here; a real solid combo of the modern indie sound with prog.  And it works!  My favorite thing about it is the time sig oddness and drumming, being a staunch percussion supremest.   Rhythmic wackiness is a bit of a musical fetish of mine, really.

9/10

Cole: Scar Symmetry- Morphogenesis; Well shit, son, you done made me make a mess.  That Christian Älvestam guy is quite the growler.  And singer.  Also, it was extremely catchy and the bridge made me hornery.  You done well.

10/10

Mike Hunt: Dance Gavin Dance- Carl Barker; Well, for starters, I don't like the growling here.  For finishers, everything else is  good and way on the funky side of things, for white person music.  Also, the drumming.
8.5/10

c_s: Sent By Ravens- Trailer Vs. Tornado- I dunno; I'm not a fan of that sorta style of music, but this song has its share of good moments.  Some fine guitar/double bass drum runs.  I did enjoy it, overall.

7.0/10

DTVT: TDH- Mr. Mallum; Is this some sorta attempt of theirs at doing Queen?  Because it totally sounds like that.

10/10

obscure: Disturbed/Korn- Forsaken; I prefer the DT one.

7/10

LLTWM: The Pineapple Thief- Snowdrops; It's good.  A bit repetitive, but it's still quite good.

8/10

Jay: CKY- Flesh Into Gear; I liked it.  Very fun tune, with a good drive, catchy chorus, and the right production.  I can't think of anything bad to say, though it wasn't my favorite this round, either.

8/10

Nekov: Karmakanic- 1969; All I can really say to describe it well is that it sounded a lot like Yes.  I like Yes.  I liked it about as much as I like most good Yes, even if it isn't Close To The Edge.

9/10

Spanker: Rollins Band- Disconnect;  Works well as a sludg-y hard rock tune on the alt-ish side.  Nice lyrics.  Cool atmosphere.

8.5/10

Next category is:

Heavy Metal Hamsters!

Sweet.  I'm definitely doing that.

Also, the new category basically means send me heavy stuff you find to be legen-wait for it- dary.  It doesn't have to involve guitars or be metal; it just has to be heavy, and preferably good.

Also, alliterations are awesome!  ^^

they are excellent, and their most recent release without the old singer is pretty damn good

Considering that you've been doing a good job, so far, you'll probably get to find out, so keep doing good, I guess.

Okay, the results are in, because I didn't want to keep you waiting.

Also, there's a twist: each point value here is worth 4X the amount it woulda gotten in the last 2 rounds.  (Ex: what would be a ten before is now forty, or what was an 8 is a 32 here.)

Just felt like doing that for shits and giggles.

PuffyPat: The Dear Hunter- Never Forgive, Never Forget; Yet another really neat song by TDH.  It's been a pleasure receiving songs by this group, as they've all proven to be very very good.  What makes this one cool is the way it's heavy, but not in the LOUD GUITARS way; more in the way things are arranged, I guess.  Sort industrial sound to the synths/drums.  Good job, Pat.

36/40

73109: Morbid Angel- God Of Emptiness; Wow, this sounds very, very evil.  Though, for whatever reason, you decided to send in an artificially down-tuned version of it.  I really like, it though, specially teh drumzors.  I am docking points, though, because you sent in a weird remix, though.  (I didn't listen to any other videos of it, so I'm betting the original version is AWESOME)

32/40

Actually, fuck it; you get a 34, because it's so evil, I thought about a bad thing and then more bad thing were through by me and now I want to murder John Boehner.   Still, man; I'm pretty sure the original version was quite heavy enough by its own merits, and better.

Nekov: David Bowie- Hallo Spaceboy; Bro, this shit's weird.  I'd never have imagined that David Bowie did industrial at some point, nor would I have imagined that it'd be good.  But apparently, he did, and it is good.  I like how it's all chaotic and shit; keeps me owled atop my seat a bit.

34/40

JayOctavarium: Sleep- Holy Mountain; This sounds like what Black Sabbath may have become by 1990 or so, had they stuck with the Ozzy lineup all the way, and kept doing drugs.  Feels good to me.

38/40

DTVT: Enslaved- Clouds; Progressive BM?  Learn of something unfamiliar every day, I guess.  It certainly beat my initial beliefs as to what modern BM would be.  Aside from some of the vocals and that really awesome tremolo part, t'was not too far removed from mordern prog rock.  Also, the chilly intro was cool and added to the whole affair.  Good pick.

38/40

obscure: Dew Scented- Soul Poison; Damn, girl!  Thrash revival?  I dig (being a total recovering thrash-faggot).  Certainly don't see too many bands sounding like these fine young men.  Super aggro and double-bass heavy.  Production was a bit loud.  You are doing quite well at having good taste in music, for a girl or boy.

36/40

Genowyn: Dir en Grey- Decayed Crow; I like what you did, there.  I heard from some people here that they suck, but this song didn't suck at all.  Hell, it was very great; it got me all confused and disturbed.  I didn't have a clue what the singer guy was saying, but it all had a primal and murderous vibe and made me feel like buttering bread.  It's probably just as good as some other songs in this round, but since you nailed the heavy and evil shit (without detuning it), you get:

40/40

deathklok09: Horse the Band- Shapeshift; I liked some aspects a lot, like some of the heavy shit, and the synthy stuff; other aspects, not so much, like some of the screams, and sometimes, the mix of core and tendo was a bit shifty.  I liked it a lot, though.

34/40

LieLowTheWantedMan: Psychotic Waltz- And The Devil Cried; Dude, you're the dude, dude.  It's, like, thrash methvll that's actually proggy and super-technical, like Voiovod, minus the psychedelic, plus something, I dunno.  I want this album now.

40/40

The King In Crimson: High On Fire- Bastard Samurai; I generally liked this stoner metal feel to it.  Pretty trippy, with its heavy moments.  I could listen to this sorta shit for a while and feel content, though I preferred the sound of Sleep, in terms of drug music; this seemed more clean, I guess.  Still, good stuff.

34/40

contest_sanity: Believer- Idols of Ignorance; Well, tech-thrash, eh?  Not bad.  It really got my attention, there.  Odd vocals, but the instrumental work was just that, minus the instru-.  Christian?  Sure didn't sound like it.

36/40

zxlkho: Neurosis- The Eye Of Every Storm; Post-metal isn't something I'm too familiar with, but if this is a good representation, well, that's something I should check out more of.  Very calming, relaxing music, yet still having its fair share of tension.  I liked how the more subdued part had this sort of pulsating feel to it; hell, the whole time it felt like it was throbbing.  Hook me up with some more of this shit.

38/40

SPNKr: Meshuggah- Straws Pulled At Random; Like, dude, that was trippy.  Got the sorta droning feel, in a sense, with lots and lots of thythmic diversity, though, sounds all creepy.  The fact that they managed to wrap so much off-kilter shit around a constant 4/4 is most admirable.  Good job

38/40

Yo guys, once a band is sent in, it can't be used again.  He got TDH in round 2 and liked it.  That removes TDH from the rest of the roulette.  Otherwise people could just keep sending the same bands.   Same band in the same round is OK since we don't know what we're sending.

Cup, you should have known better to allow that.  That's why I didn't send Solution .45, its basically Scar Symmetry.

But at least you liked Enslaved.  They rock hard.

There have been plenty of times where I've listened to a song by a band, thought it was good and then never went to listen to them again. Sometimes it takes more than one song, y'know?

Besides, there was no explicit rule against sending the same bands, so long as it doesn't get out of hand, what's the big deal?

Not everyone runs their roulette the same way.

Okay, you soul-less pricks, you wanted your writeups, with or without Asian?

You got them.

Hope you feel happy about yourselves, you pigs.

Cole: Dredg- The Canyon Behind Her; Sounds like U2 to an extent, mainly in the chorus/vocals in general, and the chorused guitars, I guess.  Which is alright with me, because I like U2.  But this isn't just U2 worship; it's got it's own spacy, lonely thing going on.  The drumming stands out; it isn't uber-technical-Mastodon shit, but it ends up adding a good deal to the recording.   Also, the end with the choir; that was a good call.

Mike: Dr. Acula- Piano Lessons Can Be Murder;
I didn't like it too much.  I'll give you credit for recognizing my Scrubs adoration, but this sorta sound didn't click with me.

Nekov: Mindflowers; The Merovingian; I haven't really ventured out to much modern jazz beyond 70s fusion, aside from the godly Medeski Martin and Wood, and I must say, this group sounds like them, in a way, though with a guitarist, and more of a heavy vibe, as opposed the former's more funk-oriented deal.  This recording really does a great job at mixing fusion with a modern, sparse vibe, while still containing a lot of indulgent instrumentation  ( I love that; the more indulgent, the better I say).

Pat: Andrew Wk- It's Time To Party; This is a very fun and happy song, which makes me feel like partying.  Shame it's so short; the energy of it coulda been carried on for another couple minutes, or so.  Clearly, this guy has a great joy for life and is quite successful at expressing it through his songwrighting.  It didn't shake my entire viewset of music to the ground, but it did a fine job at entertaining me.

Jeremy: Derek Sherinian- Nightmare Cinema;
I've never really ventured into any of the DT members' outside works, aside from LTE, so this song (and Derek Shernain's solo stuff as a whole) is new to me.  I must say, that combination of him and Zakk really turned out better than I'd expect.  The sorta heavy, artificial-harmonic-laden Zakk sound mixed into a fusion-y prog metal overall thing makes for a strong listen.  Is Zakk on the whole album, or just this song, out of curiosity?

King: Polkadot Cadaver- Slaughterhouse Striptease;
I found it kinda catchy, though the general sound just didn't caress steel with me.  I dunno, it sounded like it was trying to be "spooky" Halloween music and simultaneously be an ironic parody of it.  I give it credit for being not bad, though.

Matt: Soul Miner's Daughter- Bodies; I've never heard Sugarland, so I didn't know what to expect.  What I got out of it was pretty good.  Fun and funny little ditty.  The duo does a fine job keeping it real with but a stomp and clap beat behind them.  Nothing negative here.

Mason: Amorphis- Battle for Light; Being a fan of epic and pompous metal, this stuck to me as would a libertarian to whatever libertarianism is.  Also, it sounds Scottish, which is always a plus.  Great deal of energy, and catchy, as well, as power metal is meant to be.

obscure: W.A.S.P.- Animal (Fuck Like A Beast); Careful there, those lyrics almost made me relapse back into porn!  As for the song, it's pretty awesome.  I'm not the kinda guy who likes hair metal, but WASP sounds really cool and truly metal.  I mean, they're like going for all the same ideas and shit that the hair crap did, but they're actually good and provocative and come off as the real deal.  I'm betting WASP and Andrew Wk would make for a legendary party setlist.

Jordan: Diablo Swing Orchestra- A Tap Dancer's Dilemna;
LOLSWINGREVIVAL  Though, really, I liked it.  Definitely better than the silly swing wave from the 90s.  Probably because this group isn't just copying and caricaturing the original swing, but is instead taking that sound and expanding upon it and really making it into their own sorta thing.  Very good, all around.

Sam: Jaco Pastorius- Portrait Of Tracy;
I really like what you've brought in here.  It's super-mysterious and such, and I really like the super-effective use of harmonics coming from a bassist.  Solo recordings can be really awesome if done right, and this was done right.  Very beautiful, man.

Rye: Mew- Comforting Sounds; I remember before, I tried out some random song by Mew (fuck me if I knew what it was), and didn't like it, because I found it slow and soft and depressive.

This was slow and soft and depressive.

I loved it!  I actually took the time and effort to listen to this tune, and it was clear to me from the get go with it that I was wrong and that Mew is good.  Very beautiful and rather sad.

I can definitely see why you'd fuck yourself sideways to this; it's a song well worthy of that.

Good job, like always, guys; I am going to have a shitload of music to acquire in the near future, at this rate.

As for points and that shit, I'll give those out when Genowyn sends in his song.

Next round is:

Stuff that isn't rock or metal

No it definitely is not a genre. A singer-songwriter could play folk music, they could play alternative, etc.... shit you could ever consider Devin Townsend a singer-songwriter.

Dude, like I said, there are 2 definitions. One is a noun and the other is a genre. Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, Cat Stevens, James Taylor, Jim Croce, etc...

Well, one minor correction, dear, I didn't quite relapse, though I came the closest I have in my cold-turkey period I've been in the last couple months.  Though, if you keep on sending provocative stuff like that, I may as well cave in by the end of the roulette.   :tup

Also, now here:

Genowyn: Gunther- Ding Dong Song:
This was one of the better laughs I've had in a while.  You get a perfect score this round for its matching the theme perfectly.  ^^

So, here's everyone's scores for Round 4.
A couple of things:

I found the stuff here especially awesome (probably cause you were aiming to pleasure Galaga, in addition to me); really great job, overall!

Also, in terms of scoring, from this round (the one that just ended) onwards, I'm no longer doing half values.  If I think a song is within, say, the 8-9 range, it's either getting an 8 or 9.  Also, expect weird scoring scales with high-ish numbers, just cause since you're so good, there'll have to be to be big-ish differences in points between 2 scores 1 one-outta-ten rating apart, just for the sake of competition and pressure.  (This round's scores, the scale is: 10=55, 9=45, 8=36, 7=28, 6=21, 5=15, 4=10, so on)

Cole: 45
Mike: 21
Nekov: 55
Pat: 45
Jeremy: 45
King: 28
Matt: 36
Mason: 55
obscure: 55
Sam:  55
Jordan: 45
Rye: 55
Genowyn: 55

Also, here's the totals:

Okay, here's your shit, guys.  I decided I'll be using the grading scale I used last round for the rest of the roullet.

Cole: Cat Stevens; Where Do The Children Play; Funny, I'm generally apprehensive to folksy stuff, yet when someone throws it at me, I end up eating it straight up.  Very peaceful listen; I was stressed before listening to it, but wasn't after.  Also, it was a good idea to keep the full orchestration limited to the last verse, just made things work better.

55

Gallagher:  Submotion Orchestra- Back Chat; Last couple rounds, you've been on a sort of roll at making me like something from a genre I'm mainly wha? towards.  This was no exception; I mean, really awesome and organic sounding dubstep?  The song overall is a real nice sort of trance, a bit tense, but not to the point where the tension's the status quo.

55

Nekov: Marcus Miller- Nikki's Groove; Good slab of jazz funk.  Perhaps a bit too approachable/polished, but overall, it makes for a good listen and the overall feel is fresh.  I can go for great slap-bass any day, man, any day.

45

Mason: Battle of Mice- Sleep and Dream;
Woah.  That shit was pretty frightening; the entire thing kinda sounded like some sorta weird ritual, what with the vocals and the tribal-type-drumming.  Definitely not rawk.

55

Sam: A Tribe Called Quest- Scenario;  I am not a fan of rap.  However, I did find this song quite entertaining.  It was pretty clear that these guys put a great deal of effort into making something worth listening to, and also, it didn't sound like they were taking themselves too seriously.  I don't get why so many rappers nowadays have to be so "gritty" and "evul".  That shit's gay.

45

Jeremy: Tal Wilkenfeld- BC; Being jazz fusion, I ended up enjoying this.  I ended up really enjoying this because of the sheer energy, and sometimes chaos of it, what with so much going on there.  Excellent, excellent basswork!  (LOL, rawk really ought to steal some jazz bassists)

55

obscure: The Pierces- Boring;
Sounded James Bond-ish.  Also promoted a very negative and destructive viewpoint.  But that's alright because it was seductive, and sex sells.  Catchy, as well.

36

Pat: Ephixa- Lost Woods Remix; I recognize the original song from Super Smash Bros, I think.  (I wasn't ever too into Zelda; I played that one for the black-and-puke Gameboy, didn't like it, and that was that).  I liked the original version, or at least the one from  SSB a good deal; I didn't find that this remix did much to improve upon it, really.

28

Kix: Yoko Kanno and the Seatbelts; I don't like anime.  I do like this song, a lot!  I mean, really, you don't see big band done this well, too often these last couple decades (Hell do I know when that show it was for was produced).  Great deal of energy to go around and such.  You nailed it, I guess.

55

Matt: Jean-Luc Ponty- New Country; I never coulda guessed that fiddle could of worked so well in a jazz fusion setting.  But it did.  Not only that, but really, this shit is virtuosic.  Also, folky.

55

LLTWM: Harmonium- En Pleine Face; That wasn't rawk at all; it was folk.  Really good folk.  Felt like some journey somewhere.  Is this band to be found on progarchives.com?

45

Genowyn: Anamanaguchi- Airbrushed;
Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the original soundtracks of many NES games.  However, I didn't like this too much, as I found the music too cheery and anime-ish.  I don't like that sorta stuff.  It did have its moments though, and I thank you for sending me the video without the gay-ass animation loop thing with the things.

21

Mike: Excision- That Girl; This sounded like dubstep, except a good variation, because it actually involved subtlety and calmed the fuck down.  The thing had a very nice and soothing atmosphere, overall.

36

Here's your pie, guys; EAT UP!

Writeups are short, because I did longer ones, at first, but I then accidentally left the page, so I had to start from scratch, and you've been waiting long enough already.  Beautiful

zilcho- Sigur Ros- Staralfur- Very very good.  You've once again proven your good taste in music with this super mellow ambient rock.

55

Numbers- Devin Townsend- Numbered- This was my first introduction to the guy, and I'm definitely impressed.  That wall of sound worked out really well, and it was overall rather beautiful, as well.

55

Nekov- Arena- Opera Fanatica- Well, you've really hit up my natural love for pompous-ass prog.  Good decision on your part, I loved it.

55

Dethklok- Attack Attack!- Fumbles O Brien- WTF was that shit at the beginning?  That aside, it was good enough.

28

Matt- Theocracy- Laying The Demon To Rest- Well, epic power metal?  With Christian themes?  I liked it much, regardless of my non-religious state.

45

Jay- The Changing- Broken Hearts Club- Overall, it was pretty good; the breakdown really made the song, must say.

36

SPNKr- Sun O)))- Hunting and Gathering- This sounds like doom metal taken to its logical conclusion.  Easily some of the more disturbing music I've heard.

45

DTVT- Redemption- Black and White World- Pretty much has everything needed for good prog metal: 5/4, GOOD vocals, and tasteful key-work.  Nothing bad to say here.

55

obscure- Blind Guardian- Noldor- I'm only familiar with their really old speed metal stuff, so hearing them doing softer prog-ish stuff comes as a bit of a surprise.  Fortunately, they did it very well, as far as this song goes.

45

Pat- The Mars Volta- Cotopaxi- Dude, this sounds a lot like Rush.  I like that.  I just wish the song was longer, maybe went some more places.

55

K in C- Unexpect- Unresolved Ideas of a Distorted Guest- Sorry, man, but this just wasn't my cup of tea.  I liked some of the ideas, but overall, it felt jumbled and all over the place, like they're trying to be as "avent-garde" and spooky as possible.  Especially the vocals.

21

LLTWM- Van Der Graff Generator- La Rossa- Very very nice organ-lead prog.  The sax is a nice touch as well.  Sounds rather angry, as well, which seems to do good in this case.

55

Genwin- Parry Gripp- Nom (x7)- This didn't make me feel like eating pie.

21

Also, here's your pie:

Round 7 is:

Instrumentals!

Wow, lots of good submissions that round.  Good to see some Arena love.  That whole Blind Guardian album is badass.  Devin Townsend is also amazing, and can do lots of styles very well.

The only hard part is deciding what to send you now, I got plenty.

A pie chart would be ok if this were a zero-sum game.  Running a zero sum roulette would be interesting and potentially mean spirited.  Bar would be the proper way of doing this chart, but as I'm sure Cup will learn eventually, sometimes a data table is much better than a graphic aid.

Fuck it, I wrote write-ups just now, but accidentally left the page, so they're lost forever.  I even put a good amount of effort into them, as well, but that's that.

I will say that this was the best round yet, probably.  Y'all have good to great taste in instrumental music.

Here's your results, in the form of a data chart:

And the totals:

Final round is: send in something from the 90s.

Unless you just want to end it here.  If that's the case, if 7 are for ending it, that's the majority and it's over.

Don't get me wrong, I've really enjoyed listening to your submissions; y'all have made me intent on getting into many of your bands and artists.  It's just that, really, this thing's been really long (I take full responsibility for that; you've been quite prompt with your shit), and I'm betting that the people on the waiting list are eager for their turns.

Still, your call.

Bye.

Well, here's the results of the last round of this roulette.  It was a good round, even if I didn't get songs from a couple guys (SPNKr's run ended last round, Jay plain told me he was boned, and The Kic and Ryan were just plain missing; what I'm doing for these guys, is I'll give them points for this round, their points being their average score per round, just because they did good jobs as contestants for the first 7 rounds, and I am very glad to have had them here)

There's a different scale, just cause.

(10=66, 9=56, 8=47, 7= 39, 6= 32, 5= 26, 4= 21, 3= 17, 2= 14, 1= 12)

Ever.

Cole- Pearl Jam- Alive; I enjoy grunge, much, though I never really got into these guys, I dunno why.  Listening to this tune makes me feel rather dumb for not giving them a fair shot.  Overall this tune's got a nice, chilled-out, yet dark and raw groove to it and feels plain right.  'tis a solid example of why I like early-ish alt-rock.

66

Nekov- Flower Kings- World of Adventures; Another good submission by Nekov.  Sounds very much like Yes in some parts, but is clearly its own sound.  I found the last couple of minutes to be very beautiful and soothing.  The use of organ is always a plus, as well.

66

Mike- SOAD- Spiders; Seems to rest in a comfortable grey area between alt-rock and metal.  Overall, it's a pretty cool song, with somewhat of a creepy atmosphere, and some really eerie singing.  Nothing revolutionary, but it makes for some good fun, and makes me interested in SOAD, I guess.

56

Pat- Karate- New New; Hmm, this is a pretty weird little tune.  Starts off alt-y and then gets all proggy and jammish by the end.  Sounds somewhat quirky, in terms of the instrumentals.  Tell me some more about these assholes; I really like what I'm hearing.

66

Mason- Clockwork- If These Walls Could Talk- You were right in your guess that I'd like it.  I really dig the mix of melodic, power-metal-like, groove midpaced prog with some clever fusion-ish moments, plus a well-placed solo.   So much goes on in its 5ive minutes, and it all ends up complementing itself and turns out really great.  Also, that chorus.

66

obscure- Grip Inc.- Rusty Nail- You people can call me tasteless and uncultured all you want, but some good groove metal can really get me pumped!  This does a fair enough job.  It makes me kind of feel like drinking some Mountain Dew playing some game about car combat or killing aliens, or some other stereotypical late-90s activity.

56

C_s- Big Wreck- That Song- What do you get when you mix some driving alt-rock with some chill pills?  A good and memorable tune.  Nothing much to say, really, it's a good song and is well worth your time.

56

Genowyn- NIN- We're in this Together- NIN is one of those acts who I hear most everyone love, yet it's taken me forever to really approach it.  This song is great; it's quite cool hearing all these layers of synths and guitars and such being mixed into a dissodent and unnerving mass for most of it, and then having it transition into a more piano-led softer ending.  I may of failed your roulette, Mr. Anime Lumberjack, but you sure as hell haven't failed mine!

66

LLTWM- Cardiacs- Fiery Gun Hand- This is very fun and delightfully off kilter.  The vocals are rather Chav-ish, while the instrumentation is very up-beat and punk-ish.  That is, if not for the clever touches of the brass samples, the silly (carnival-ish?) break, and best of all, the the crazy, JR-like keyboard shit throughout the last minute or so.

66

As for the other 4,

Ryan had an average of 9.5, that'll round up to a 10, so he gets 66

The King In Crimson had an average of about 8.2, that'll round down to 8, so he gets 47

Jay had an average of about 8.7, that'll round up to 9, so he gets 56

SPNKr had an average of about 9.1, that'll round down to 9, so he gets 56

Finally, the moment you've all been waiting for:

IT'S THE FINAL RESULTS IN THE FORM OF A DELICIOUS PIE CHART!!!

Or, if you feel those 4 guys don't deserve those cusion points, then...

Either way,

A. Y'all got yer asses beaten by DTVT, and

Z.  I thank y'all for taking part in this roulette!  You introduced me to a great deal of great music!  The diligence and great patience displayed by y'all, having to deal with my slowpoke antics is most admirable.

Now, how bout y'all go play with some animals or something.

Karate are an amazing indie rock band, who are unfortunately no longer together. They have a heavy jazz influence which is one of the big reasons that I got into them. They're album In Place of Real Insight is a top 5 album for me, and I recommend that you check it out (the song I sent you is on that one). Next check out their self titled, and from there you should definitely go for Unsolved. After that just listen to whatever you can get your hands on. They're not too well know, so you might have to look out for their stuff, but if I'm correct, a lot of their stuff is on Grooveshark, so you should probably start there. All in all, I FUCKING LOVE Karate, so get listening bitch. :heart

EDIT: Also, they're not assholes by any means. I'm offended.

I have no idea.

There is no song of yours in my inbox.

Odds are, it probably would of netted you 66 points, which you ended up getting anyways through the cusion points, as the results with the cusion points are the real ones.

Though I would like it if you resent it, as I'm betting it's awesome.

EDIT: Also, they're not assholes by any means. I'm offended.

You see, I was using the term 'assholes' as a synonym for guys or people, basically serving as a generic and neutral term.  I'm pretty sure Karate were good human beings.

Clockwork is freaking awesome.  Too bad they only have one album and one super rare EP (which I'm damn proud to say I own).

Speaking of ownership,

That's three baby!
