The 3rd or 4th best song on the album for me. It is so powerful and heavy. Most of us have already noticed the UAGM similarities but it's the piano intro and the part to follow it that really makes the song come alive on its own for me. It has such an Eastern feel to it. Hats off to JR and his inspiration, Chopin!
-
Great song! This is the first song that clicked for me on this album, and I just love that tickle part before the first verse, it's so crazy!! And that chorus!!
GREAT song.
-
-
-
Whole intro (not just the piano intro) is one of the highlights of the album and DT music overall... too bad the rest of the song isn't on that level of awesomeness then it could be easily top 3 DT song for me but it's still an amazing song and has many more great moments.
-
Easily my favorite song from the new album. An instant classic,

That is true, if the song's verses were up to the quality of the intro it could be my number two song.
-
I find that the intro piano melody really reminds me of the main theme from Lawrence of Arabia. It really has that desert feel. Also, the tickle section makes that metal riff that comes after it feel so heavy and powerful to my ears.
-
Love this song to death. The piano intro > crazy fast unison playing with ridiculous drumming > awesome mid tempo headbanging riffage > killer chorus > time signature changes so natural...like butta... :metal
-
Cannot get the chorus out of my head!
I'm reading George R. R. Martin's Song of Fire and Ice series right now, and every time I head the lyrics about "rising from the sand" and "dying for my brothers" or whatever it says (don't have the booklet in front of me) I'm always reminded of the whole Daenerys plot.
-
This song is just perfect in every way. Top 3 on ADTOE.
-
:hefdaddy TICKLE SECTION :hefdaddy
-
I don't know why so many people rank it low. It's a great longer song with a lot of variety, no padding, and a good instrumental section.
Probably my favourite on the album, if not, then second.
-
Such a great song in pretty much every way. It just hits the spot. :coolio
-
I hated it at first, but it's a solid song. Not crazy about the subject matter, but it's not terrible. At least it's "real" and not about dark masters, diabolical counts or shamans.
-
A top 3 song on the album for me (with BITS and BAI). It has a killer chorus and that crazy "tickle" section :metal
-
Fantastic stuff.
-
I can't put the CD anywhere near a magnet because of the severe metalness of the verse riff :metal
Amazing all around, I had the impression it was getting no love around here.
-
Didn't really rate it until listen 10-15 or so but now I love it. I remember the first few times I listened to it, I couldn't stand the extended riffing after each line of the chorus!
-
I also love the really retro sounding section after the first chorus (the greatest story never told etc).
-
I love the intro, it just feels big, even with just the piano bit.
Oh, and the tickle section. Love that... and everything else about the song.
-
Probably my 2nd least favorite song on the album, but all the songs on this album are favorites and awesome. Appreciated, great song!
-
Great stuff
Tickle section for the win
-
Could someone please enlighten me on what a tickle section is? Is that like where you immediately :rollin ? :lol

Ahhhh got it. Yes, my brother and I were laughing during this section at how crazy amazing it is yesterday in the car. :metal

nothin g fictional about Shamen!
Awesome song. That intro... I came up with a similar riff a couple of years ago but couldn't really work out what to do with it. Should have channelled Chopin.
The tickle section... I love the way it just keeps going when you think it's about to end.
And the chorus just sticks. this will rule live.

I love the part when JLB sings "Feared and respected, living among the gods". Usually, when DT does the upbeat, double bass power metal sound, they do it so well!
Also: cool solos (both JP and JR)!
-
The keyboard solo is my favorite part.
-
Great song, but I can't help think about Symphony X during the chorus. However, the guitar solo is probably my favorite part of the first half of the album.
-

It's a long time since SX had that much melody in a song.

well it reminds me of V: New Mythology Suite era, or earlier.
-
Was ranked at 6 or 7 after my first listen now its at 4 or 5. I originally thought the instrumental parts were a little too long but now I have no problem with it. Love the intro and the eastern tone of the song.
-
Anyone remember my Mash-Up DT names thread?
"The Ministry Of Lost Not Forgotten Souls"
It'd be epic, but it still wouldn't top "Learning To Live Forever"
Great song, and the opening is just epic. Perfect vibe and sound for the song/lyrics.
-Marc.
-
nothin g fictional about Shamen!
To a Christian, it's pretty fictional. But, that's for another thread.
-
I don't know if this has been mentioned elsewhere, but the first few bars of the piano intro (and when the guitar kicks and repeats the same theme) is slightly reminiscent of Princess Leia's theme from the original Star Wars movie.
-
I really enjoyed this song!
Star Wars reference, lyrics about history/fantasy, power metal type stuff, and most of all, the UNISON, are all reasons why it's awesome!
-

Good point! Has JR ever admitted to being a Star Wars fan?
4:51 - 5:21 of LNF is :heart

JP has played a Star Wars tune in a solo section before. I want to say it was before Trial of Tears on Once in a Livetime, but I'm not going to listen to it just to find out. :lol
So if there's any intentional SW reference in there, it would most likely be JP.
-
Yeah, it's pretty cool that JP loves movie scores. It gives DT a much grander sound.
-
One of the best songs on the album! Top 3 at least! :metal

I remember that thread. Cool stuff.
-
Although I still think the instrumental section in the beginning is way over the top, the rest of the song keeps getting more awesome.
The chorus sounds like warriors trampling their opposers.
-
A. It shouldve opened the album.
B. Everytime I listen to the unison going into the main heavy verse riff I cant help but hear a crowd going crazy.
Awesome song.
-
the unison!!!! just outstanding. what i like the most from that unison is John myung bass line... freaking killer!!!! i got crazy just listening to that bass line
-
Effing love this song guys...Dat tickle section is killer...and the piano intro....
-
John Myung slays in this song.
-
Love the double kick in this.
-
Obsessed with this song. The verse/chorus action KILLS, especially the first time around. Just brutal...one of my favorites on the album for sure.
-
I don't know why everyone always says "unison". It's not a unison. At all lol. There are two licks harmonized, but that's it. It has nothing unisony.
And lol if anyone's interested, I learnt what the guitar plays and uploaded the GP file (GP6, with png screenshots for people who don't have it) to megaupload.
So, if anyone's interested: https://www.megaupload.com/?d=EPFF5WHY

Ohhh, so that's how you play it.. Thanks mate, I'm gonna be doodling around with this for a bit. :tup

Pretty much everything about this song just slams, easily my favorite from the ADTOE. I better hear it live Oct. 2nd in Chicago!

It was Voices.
Lost Not Forgotten is a decent song.
-
It is definitely one of those songs that takes a few listens before you really like it. Call me weird but if I could live without the chorus.
-
love at first sight.... and still growing on me...
-
LNF was my least favourite song after first listen. That wiggly-diddly section was odd chorus was too powerish, instrumental section was a mess, I liked only first verse and part after first chorus. BUT NOW!!!!
It's definitly my top 3!!! I love instrumental past, it's one of the best from ADTOE, love the chorus, love the beginning...love LNF!!! :metal
-
LNF was my first #1 song on the album... until about the 3-4th listen and it got replaced, but it's still a great song with a lot of parts that make it work for me:
- James' vocals overall are great. Gritty without being too metalish (something his voice just isn't
suited for).
- The second verse is beautiful! Love how it's more narrative in terms of lyrics and James' voice is
clean for it.
- JP's solo! :hefdaddy I missed solos like this from JP.
- JR's solo is also excellent!
- And finally... that ending chorus is HUGE! MM's ride and the "entended" section give this song a
great finale... very satisfying.
-
Totally agree lonemeyer!! Second verse has that second part which is so awesome. JP is playing open strings which are so beautiful and fitted so well. Also I love the ending of JP main solo in instrumental part. And Jordan solo reminds me of I%W so much.
-
The drumming during the tickle section needs more appreciation! :omg:
-
I don't know why everyone always says "unison". It's not a unison. At all lol. There are two licks harmonized, but that's it. It has nothing unisony.
cause it's easy to call it that way, everyone knows what you a referencing to. I still don't get the tickles name so i'll stick with unison.
-
The bass and drumming during the tickle section needs more appreciation! :omg:
corrected ;)
-
For my version of Lost Not Forgotten, I cut out the intro, the tickle section, the first verse, left the chorus, took out the breakdown, the second verse, the bridge, left the chorus, took out the entire instrumental section, left the chorus, and took out the outro...
So, in the end, I was left with 3 choruses, so I cut two of them out, and was left with 1 chorus, and that is the current version that I listen to. :hat

I was just kidding, man!
That would mean that the version I have is only like 30 seconds long.
Actually, I did edit the song a little bit, cut out some parts that stopped me from enjoying the song a bit,
I shortened the "tickle" section, and took out a little bit from the instrumental section, and I enjoy it a lot more.

Then you are probably just subjected to just asking about things you want to know when the moment arises, because I think there are a lot of interviews and much information/ random facts that have surfaced from present time to a couple months ago to just go through conveniently, or leisurely.
-
Does the beginning of this song remind anyone else of "Under a glass moon"?
-
Does the beginning of this song remind anyone else of "Under a glass moon"?
No. The chorus does though. It's got a similar pulse.
-
The hell is the tickle section?
The part that starts at 2:00.
I don't think that's it. I believe it's right around 1:35, where the guitar against keyboard gives a freaky diminished feel. The part at 2:00 isn't ticklish, it's just standard DT instrumental madness.
-
When did DT called it that way?
btw, can someone make the tickle/unison or whatever loop for 2 - 3 minutes song? it's so freaking amazing!
-
I could be wrong.
-
This song is one of my favorites on the album and DT's catelog altogether but I thought this was worth mentioning:
My GF and I were driving to get dinner and (as ADTOE is constantly playing in my car) LNF started to play. My GF casually says, after 2 minutes in, "This is becoming one of my favorite songs on the CD."
Now, time to pick out an engagement ring... :metal
-

Easily my favorite song from the new album. An instant classic,
:metal I agree this song kicks major ass, it is the one i keep going back to. I would like everyone to do as I have and that is Tweet, Facebook do what ever to get the guys to notice that this song has to be played live. It screams classic and would be amazing to see. As I have told the guys they have time to practice the song during sound checks well before the break it out at the NJ show. Here's hoping.
-
been waiting for a song like this from DT for a long ass time. my reaction to "Lost Not Forgotten" the first time listening to it:
-
This is probably my favorite on the disc. The chorus really sounds like SFAM era DT. The ending chorus is probably my favorite part when they drop the turnarounds and play the chorus straight. The middle section kind of reminds me of Blind Faith. Love it. Really hope they add this on a 2nd leg.
-
I really like this song too. It's definitely one of my favs on the album (I'm having a hard time ranking them). I hope they are saving LNF and TITL for the European leg (not that I don't want them to play them in the US as much as I don't want them to not play them at all).
They are two of my favorite songs on the album... but just by a fraction of a margin... with the exception of FFH which I put a little below than all the others.
-
one of my fav's of the album. and the best JP solo since UAGM. the solo is like 1.5 minute long and again all styltes are in there, shred, virtosuo, blues, jazz, melody...
drums are awesome the intro with the crazy instrumental section....hell it the great chunky riff...man it even might be the best song on the album. .anyway every time i pop in the cd this is the first one i listen to.
-
for me it's definitely up there with BAI... possibly even better than it on some occasions
-
The drumming during the tickle section needs more appreciation! :omg:
This.
And yeah, a really good song. A couple of bits I don't like that much, but overall it's very enjoyable. :)
-
sonically beats the most of the songs on album, that's a bit curious why the production of album is so unbalanced.
musically it's a powerhouse...
-
I really like the outro groove from 9:46 (also the intro riff at 1:12, where JP is playing octaves and JR is big and choral in the background) but it feels like it should go on longer, like another minute or two, like the Scarred outro. It just really screams at me to be extended and maybe they'll do it live with some JP improv over it.
-

I am 100% positive! ;)
-
I love this song and I love the tickle section. An album highlight for me
-
The hell is the tickle section?
The part that starts at 2:00.
Oh the video game section. Why is it called a tickle section?
Because DT called it that.
Yeah. JP says:
I wrote it out and built it piece by piece, programming drums as I went. I showed it to Jordan (Rudess, keyboards), who said, 'That's crazy!' He learned it and put a harmony to it.
We played it for some of the people from Roadrunner who came by as we were recording, and they went crazy. One of them remarked that the diminished section was like being tickled – that feeling you get where you're saying, 'Stop, stop!' but somebody keeps tickling you anyway. So we started referring to that part as 'The Tickle Section.'
-
probably my 2nd favorite on this album, the last chorus is rediculous and the instrumental section is probably my favorite on this album, would love to see it live!
-
First time I listened to the album, when this song kicked in, I had a big ass grin on my face, and yelled "FUUUUUCKK!!!!!!" during the entire intro. I knew this album would kick ass, and LNF confirms that when you listen to the whole album.

Hahaha, I literally did the same exact thing.
As soon as I got the CD home, I burned it, put it on my iPod, sat in my bed with the sheets over my head, slapped those headphones on my ears... And pressed play...
On The Backs of Angels... Yeah, yeah, awesome song, already heard it, but I will give the rest of the album suspense by listening to this track the whole way through.
Build Me Up, Break Me Down... Fuck!
Lost Not Forgotten... Fuuuuuuuuuck!!

Cranked this up to the max on a drive earlier, and while not one of my favorites from ADTOE, it is still pretty damn great. Definitely worthy of a bump. :tup :tup
-
The chorus makes me step on the gas when I'm listening to it in my car. :lol
-
I've grown to like this song a lot more than I did at first.
*appreciates*
-
Not a huge fan of this tune, sorry guys. Probably my least favorite on the record. The 2nd verse and guitar & key solos are pretty cool though.
-
I've loved LNF from the first listen. I think MM plays really well on this song but my favorite part has to be the "riffage" section from 8:05 to 8:20.
-
Definitely needs to be played live. I haven't listened to it in a while but it hasn't lost its value.
-
This song is just perfect in every way. Top 3 on ADTOE.
There are no words to describe how wrong I was.
-
There are some cool parts, but overall the song's pretty boring to me. When I listen to ADTOE and skip this song the album immediately becomes better for me.
-
Not my favourite song on ADTOE but still a great one, i think it would be killer live, lots of energy, powaah...
-
The chorus makes me step on the gas when I'm listening to it in my car. :lol
Was that you I passed, I do the same thing. I thought for sure they would have broken this song out for the Euro portion of the tour. I can't believe they have blow it off. Maybe it's just too difficult otherwise why would they not break it out. This would be explosive on stage
-
Or maybe they're playing it until the next tour, just like they did with Prophets of War.
-
It's quite a great tune and it's gonna kick ass live. Can't wait.
-
*major appreciation* :metal
I think LNF is in my Top 3 favorites from ADToE. It's also weird that the instrumental version kicks 10 times more ass than the original, but really cool at the same time.
-
This is a cool song. The unison at the beginning is amazing. :hefdaddy
-
Love this song but it doesn't look like it is going to make the live setlist this tour. This and TITL should be in the setlist so that they can make it in the DVD if there is one. Hopefully it will be added on the next tour.
-

Hello it's an appreciation threat. Why stop to type that. Next time skip the thread as well.
This song is awesome, it has mad riffs, nice melody, killer drumming, unique sounding solo, and solid singing.

Why have they not played this yet!
-
My guess is that they are probably enjoying playing the other songs from the new album so much that they simply haven't worked Lost Not Forgotten and This Is the Life into the sets yet, and they wanna leave enough room to play older stuff, so they simply haven't worked them in yet, but it is probably only a matter of time.

I see what you did there... :tup
-
I would have to say that it is my favorite track off the new album. It is the quickest 10 minutes of Dream Theater I have ever listened to it and that's a good thing. I also really love the JR solo in the song.
-
It is probably obvious that I love this song.....especially about the 2:30 mark.
The first time I heard it was driving. I said the following outloud....to myself.
Piano into: "cool"
First sign of heaviness: "awesome"
Crazy speedy stuff: "wow"
The crunch that changed the world: "holy $#()*#"
Every album there is always one little thing that makes me a fan for life....the 2:30 mark in this song was the part on this album.
-
Well, I guess that the song has somewhat climbed the mountain for me. It's still not a top 20 song, but I particularly appreciated the way it sounded live. I indeed expected it to slay on stage, and many good bootlegs from the 2nd North American Leg confirmed my theories :)
Let's say that it should not be put on the shelves forever. :)
-

An epic novel no one's read? :lol
I listened to this song last night (actually the whole album) - :2metal:

I can't say the same. It was my least favourite song on the album for months, mainly because I felt too much the similarity to UAGM. I didn't really begin appreciating it until June, when I first heard a live performance.
-
OMG, hearing it live (three times, natch) was amazing. :hefdaddy

I am still happier I got Outcry in my one and only DT show. How was the crowd partecipation during the song? Was the audience as much into it as the band was? :)

Um... I was. :lol
Let me clarify - I'm sure you're already aware that US audiences differ VASTLY from any other audiences, so... when I'm at shows, I climb into my own little world with the music washing over me so I really don't pay a whole lot of attention to other people (besides the ones I'm with, if I'm going to a show accompanied).
-
I don't care, I :heart Lost Not Forgotten. It was love at first listen too. :)
I can't say the same. It was my least favourite song on the album for months, mainly because I felt too much the similarity to UAGM. I didn't really begin appreciating it until June, when I first heard a live performance.
Well, if it's an hommage it's cool, but if it's their attempt to secretly re-write the past, not so much.
On a serious note, I absolutely f*ing love this song (major chords, yay!). The UAGM reference is there (claiming otherwise is ridiculous) and I love that, too. I just wish they had paid hommage to Surrounded on ADTOE.
-
I wish DT had played LNF when I saw them, it's one of the only songs on ADToE that I would still listen to at this point.
-
Despite the obvious Under a Glass Moon mirroring and bad lyrics, I think it's a pretty rocking song and it's one of the songs (from the new album) I'm most looking forward to on the DVD.
......it made the DVD, right?

I'm under the impression that ALL of the ADTOE songs will make it to the DVD and/or CD in some shape or form. At least, I really truly hope so.

Well to be safe, I am just going to assume that only the songs from those 2 shows will make it on the DVD, which I hope I'm incorrect about.
Was LNF played at either of those two shows?

BMUBMD was also played only once at first show.
-
It was? I just copied the set lists from the Concerts forum on here and assumed they were accurate, as they usually are before they're posted, although I just checked setlist.fm and it seems the songs in the 3rd spot were swapped, so BMUBMD should be in the first show, while TDEN is in the 2nd show.
-Marc.

Weren't we getting updates about third or fourth handed those nights, though?

Weren't we getting updates about third or fourth handed those nights, though?
Well, either way, both songs were likely played between both nights, and if the band does indeed release both shows, or some combination of both, we'll get both songs, so I don't really care either way which show had which song as long as we get both on the upcoming CD/DVD!
-Marc.
-
I love Lost Not Forgotten. It's ranked second or third for ADToE for me, behind Breaking All Illusions, and possibly Bridges.

Good choices. :tup

Am I the only one who is annoyed that WIMH/TTTSTA was played at both shows and that it's going to be featured on the new live album? I mean, we got them on the last 2 official live albums (LAB and Score), why do we need another version of that, instead of The Great Debate (to represent SDOIT), or some other song??? Not to mention I don't like seeing a section of a bigger song being played (which is why I didn't like Schmedley Wilcox on Chaos In Motion).
-
I don't mind too much because Mangini is an absolute beast on those tracks. Worth seeing again just for that.

I guess. I almost forgot Mangini would be there  that any track will be of interest just to hear him on it.

1 of the 2 songs that are good on ADToE (with breaking all illusions)
Edit: make that as I like the verses of OtBoA and the chorus' of BITS

Yep, I found that strange too, along with yet another version of TSCO. A couple of songs I would have liked to see instead, but at least they filmed 2 shows and managed to get the majority of their tour setlist in there.
-
I am fine with it. Those two songs were mainstays on the tour, and the live DVD/Blu-Ray is a reflection of the tour, so it makes total sense for them to be included. Throwing something else on just to be different is never a good idea. The band obviously loves playing those songs.

"Either way, I applaud them for having the balls to do it and for the overall quality the end result turned out to have. I know how hard it is to write a song based off of a pre-established arrangement and have it sound concise, genuine and inspired. The tendency is to have a fucked up Frankenstein instead of music, so props to DT for pulling it off."

I don't really understand why people keep on thinking that believing that those are intentional (or real) similarities is the same as criticising anything.

I ABSOLUTELY agree. It is one thing for me to not really care for those songs but for them to appear on three consecutive live albums is wayyyyy overkill. Putting Pull Me Under on three consecutive live albums is overkill but it would at least make sense.
I'm glad I got to see them do the Great Debate before they pulled it from the set. It is a long drawn out song so I guess I can understand the crowd not reacting as well to it, especially if they are newer fans. But that song is a mammoth!

I don't think even Pull Me Under has gotten the 3-in-a-row treatment on DT's live albums.......... :-\
-
however, by watching videos on youtube of Pull Me Under on the Luna Park gigs before they got taken down, I can easily say that was JLB's best performance ever on a live album of the song (probably excluding Marquee and Live in Tokyo). You're on for a treat on the end.
your will is DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONE-AH!

Ah, so someone else was paying attention :tup I wish they hadn't taken the vids down but eh.
Not sure should I start this topic in this topic, but Iced Earth recorded their DVD on the very same day and it will come out in April :-X True, there's 5 more songs on theirs, but it's more straightforward editing since it was one show only.

I know!

It's a great song, i really like it, especially the instrumental section, Mangini does some sick stuff, and it was more obvious watching youtube videos, since some cymbal work was lost because of the production.
The DVD version will be amazing, i'm hoping for some good editing (unlike Live Scenes which was awful with all the shitty effects etc) which will show us all of the guys playing their great parts.

It's because you weren't here at the time when ADTOE was being released. One guy, Thiago, who is quite famous among DT fans for his great (and aknowledged my MP) split screen covers, came here with a lenghty analysis maintaining that ADTOE was a blatant ripoff of Images And Words. An unpolite discussion ensued and Thiago was either banned or left without ever coming back.

Don't forget how MP tried to stir up the controversy by saying it was blatantly obvious to him by the time he listened to the album, and i remember he posted once again to say that this matter should be discussed more by the fans. Good times.
But we went off topic :sadpanda:
-
I was actually being serious along with taking a lighthearted jab at Thiago. LNF does indeed sound too much like UAGM for me to appreciate it all that much.
-
I think it is fair to not like the song because it sounds like UAGM. To me, it does, but I do not really mind. However, when things really went sour back then is when Thiago accused the band of consciously writing it like UAGM, and when MP capitalized on Thiago's comments. The accusations were absolutely absurd.
But, I digress. I think the song is amazing.
-
I think the similarities are too huge to be unintentional, especially considering that most of the ADTOE songs are similar to I&W songs, but even if they did write LNF with UAGM in mind, I don't think it's such a big deal. There are many songs in the world that share a structure similar to each other, like most of the pop songs today. And in a way it's an interesting idea to take the basic idea of an old song and write a new one with it. But obviously I prefer if artists write something completely new without thinking about some old song.
LNF is one of my least favorites on ADTOE, but that's not saying much since it's my 3rd favorite DT album and I like all the songs. Like I said, I don't mind the similarities, but I think UAGM is better. The only thing that makes LNF slightly weaker than the rest of ADTOE (except BMUBMD) is the tickle section - it feels kind of tacked on. The rest of the song is great, though, especially the keyboard solo which is one of Jordan's best.

Uhm, yeah, I was there (reading the forum) and I know it and I just posted a quote from Thiago. If you just scroll up a little, you can see that I know exactly what you are talking about.
And Thiago NEVER claimed that "ADTOE was a blatant ripoff of Images and Words". Did you actually read what he said? He said that there are structural similarities that obviously are no coincidence. And that certainly is true. And my point right now was that Thiago never said anything bad about that, he just pointed it out and people just always seem to think that believing that those structural similarities are intentional is the same as CRITICIZING it, which is not.
It was Portnoy who looked at this thing in a negative way, not Thiago.
Thiago:
"I have no idea why Dream Theater did this. Maybe because it was the album that “made them” in a time where it was a do or die for their careers, so it’s an inspiring model. Maybe because this represents a new beginning for them with Mike Mangini, as it was when James Labrie joined the band back then. Maybe to celebrate 20 years of the album that defined the Dream Theater sound? Maybe they just thought it would be a fun challenge to write unique songs over pre-established charts, much like a few fans did (myself included) when they held the Stream of Consciousness song-writing contest back in 2002-2003. Either way, I applaud them for having the balls to do it and for the overall quality the end result turned out to have. I know how hard it is to write a song based off of a pre-established arrangement and have it sound concise, genuine and inspired. The tendency is to have a fucked up Frankenstein instead of music, so props to DT for pulling it off."
That's why my point is, the joke "I don't like it because it sounds too similar to UAGM /Thiago" is not justified. You could say /Portnoy, but, yeah, you see what I mean, right?
-
Didn't Thiago argue that the equivalent song to Surrounded on the album was BMUBMD?
Yeah. :lol

Yeah, that one was very far-fetched, but he did say that was one he wasn't sure about at all and he's right with a lot of stuff, so it's pretty childish to keep laughing about him.
And that wasn't even part of the discussion. This thread is about LNF and Zook actually doesn't like the fact that the song is too close to UAGM. All I'm saying is that the addition "/Thiago" isn't fair, because he never said that there was something actually bad about those similarities, he merely pointed them out. On the contrary, he even said that DT did a great job.
-
Are you in Thiago's band?
-
Alright, I'm out.
-
I couldn't care less if LNF was based from UaGM, or if ADToE was based from IaW.

Tickle section??? Is that what everyone calls it? Who started that? I love that section more than words can tell. I show it to people to get their bewildered reaction. I ask musicians, how the hell did they not only do that - how did they think it up? 1:90 in the song, got it memorized. Please tell me about this phrase "tickle section"!

I think that was started by Petrucci, who said that section is like when someone is tickling you and you want them to stop and they don't and it keeps going on and on.
Personally, I am not a fan of that section, and feel like is completely disrupts what is otherwise a really good intro and a very good song.

This song is totally badass. Love the piano bits, awesome guitar solo, drumming and overall groove.

Interesting, I never knew that either.
On the one hand I like it because it's just plain ridiculous. On the other it really doesn't fit well with the rest of the song. Great song overall though.
-
I feel that section just makes the song that much more badass! I have a friend that's not that into DT, but whenever he hears that song he is blown away and realizes how good they are. :metal
-
Agreed. That section of the album as well as Outcry's instrumental section makes me realize how powerfully technical those Dream Theater guys are. They also have epic team chemistry and man, that must be so hard to pull off!
-

I think that was started by Petrucci, who said that section is like when someone is tickling you and you want them to stop and they don't and it keeps going on and on.
The song features a diminished passage of unison playing. Said Petrucci: "I wrote it out and built it piece by piece, programming drums as I went.
So we started referring to that part as 'The Tickle Section.'"
