Title: What kind of car do you drive?
Post by: Shadow2222 on September 13, 2011, 01:57:15 PM
We have every type of thread on here regarding each of us personally (Post your pic, etc.), but I've never seen a car thread.

So, without further ado, post what kind of car you drive.

If you want, post a pic of your car.

No pics of my car on my computer but I drive a 2001 VW Golf.

I'm looking for a new DD but I'll never let my golf go, that thing is most reliable and fun thing I own.

You know, I've never heard anyone say anything bad about VW, especially the Golf. They must be good cars (never drove one personally).

2005 Honda Civic coupe. I'm selling it ASAP. I can't stand that it's a base model (manual locks, windows, everything), I can't stand it's fucking 4 speed auto trans, and I can't fucking stand that it's a poorly repaired rebuilt title. I'm gettin either a Golf or a Scion Xa, or whatever isn't a fucking rebuilt Honda Civic. The car was so badly put together that it's basically held together by zip-ties. I'm tired of finding a new problem with the car every month.

Please tell me you got one with a real, honest to god,  foot operated clutch.

Once they came out with the 1 series, I kind of figured that would be my next car, but it's still a few years before the used ones drop into my price range.  Currently shopping for an interim E36 to replace the one I've got now.

SMF 2 doesn't want me posting any pictures, so no dice in this thread.

Normally I'd be inclined to agree with you, but BMW is really trying to do away with the clutch, from what I can tell.  They really want people to drive inside the box, so to speak.  It's entirely possible that those things are impossible to get in a stick.

My golf has a terrible reputation but my golf has been relatively problem free aside from a few electrical gremlins here and there.

Awesome Awesome Awesome. Did you drive any of the 3-series? If so how do they compare?

I haven't had the time to drive anything other than the 335 and I'm having a hard time justifying the cost brand new. I've also looked at the 1-series however I've never driven on.

That seems to be the common trend with a lot of the German auto makers, but only in the states. I know a lot of the race edition VWs and Audis are only offered with clutchless transmissions, while germany and all of Europe gets the good ol' 6 speed. I know several people who had the systems imported, then converted their cars.

Well for one thing,  America's love affair with the car is winding down.  More and more people just want transportation, and actually having to shift gears detracts from your texting time.

My mechanic and I discussed BMW's tendency away from cars that are fun to drive a while back.  His take on it is that with all of the automakers, BMW included,  offering huge warranties and quite a bit of scheduled maintenance,   they have a major interest in keeping people like me from abusing their cars.  The stick-shift is a fine example.  I'm an absolute terror to any clutch, and that's a $3k hit they'd rather not absorb.  My first BMW was an E30 that I abused mercilessly for 12 years every day.  I don't think the modern, more plastic version of the 325 could withstand my abuse for 100k, much less the 220k that my old one did, and I know that they don't want to be responsible for maintaining it during that time.  Better for them to just build a car that will only let you drive the way they want you to.

Now, that said,  I'm real interested in hearing if Doc Millah's car defies my theory.  They're still making M-coupes for a reason, so the game's not entirely over.  His car has a power to weight ratio that's absolutely absurd, so I'd like to know if they left room for playtime.

Yes, I'm an awful person...it's automatic, with clutchless manual.  The option for fully manual is there...I just never learned stick :(

I'm actually already thinking ahead a few years, making sure I've learned stick by then, and going for an M1 or M3 (hopefully the M1 will be available in something other than black or valencia orange by then).  Possibly the 335i coupe convertible.  Straight manual is an option for all models...though it's no cheaper.

Yes, it pops.  It's made those annoying-ass short on-ramps on the LI highways into launch pads.  I can confirm 0-60 in 5.7, and 0-75 in about 7.  Easy to go 90+ without really realizing it (a bigger deal in NY than TX).  I find that I arrive places earlier than I expect to.  :)  I'd like to get it on some midwestern roads where I can really open it up.

Very maneuverable, and I've taken to zipping through tight spots while blowing right by people.  Though when you hit a pothole, it feels like you've been hit with a baseball bat (sport tires and sport suspension).

I didn't try a 3 series, so I really can offer a comparison.

The 5.7 surprises me.  Looks like the car is quite a bit heavier than I would have expected.  Not sure where all the weight is, actually.  It also appears that the 3L engine lost a bit of the torque the 2.8 had.  Makes me wonder if they're de-tuning the thing to sell more turbos.

And yeah, BMW's have a way of making you go a lot faster than you realize.  The first time I found myself driving 30 mph above what I though I was shocked.

Also, regardless of what I think BMW is turning into,  those seats are worth whatever they want to charge for the rest of the car.  My current ride is lacking the sport seats and it really saddens me.  I miss the way the old ones hugged you.

Anyhoo, now that I'm home I can post a picture.  Here's my car, quite unlawfully, turning right on red a little too quickly.

That what I like about these cars.  I had one that lasted to about 285,000 miles before the rust took it.  I bought my current car w/96,000, but the rust took over much faster this time.

Recently had to retire my 96 Pontiac Grand Prix. :(

Had the car from a month before my 16th birthday till a month before my 25th, pretty much 9 years exact, and I loved that car.

Now I have a 97 Mitsubishi Galant.

Volvo's are built like freaking tanks.  200k miles is barely into the teenage years for those things.  My brother's made it to about 350k.

Yes, I'm an awful person...it's automatic, with clutchless manual.  The option for fully manual is there...I just never learned stick :(

Which was one of the major reasons I went for this car (and my friend gave me a good deal on it). It's at about 185k at the moment, so I'm expecting a good amount of life out of this thing.

I ordered this car last month. It will be mine in about 2 weeks. It is blk/blk.

I drive this car quite a bit. But mine is in black.

And I drive this primarily to haul things, kid, and his sporting equipment or his friends, or to do shopping. It too is black/black.

Primarily I guess you could say we are an Acura family. I have owned and presently own many cars, and I really like Acura's. We buy new Acura's every two or three years. I plan to keep the latest MDX and give it to my son when he turns 16 (provided he continues to perform well in school and stays on the honor roll)

I bought this car in 2009 (I call it my mid-life crisis, indulgence car) and it is a nice piece of U.S. engineering. I drive this car only in the spring and summer. It's "viper red" w/red/black interior

We also own an 06 Land Rover (white), which I hate because it gets horrible gas mileage.

How do you like the Viper?

I enjoy it alot. In fact I plan to take it out tomorrow. It's not a car I will ever use for my every day car. It is sheer power. It is very rough to drive at any measurable speed on the highway. Road conditions are too tough really. I have taken it a couple of times to a drag race track nearby. The track length is 1/2 mile, but they really only let you run it 1/4 mile. That has been a lot of fun, but I'd love to find an oval somewhere. I've never had it anywhere near it's top speed of course (202), but I did have it once at 155. (That btw is the fastest I have ever driven in my life, and I was for a split second terrified). I did the 1/4 in 12.1 seconds, and it'll do stopped to 60 in about 3 or 3.5. But if I'm honest, the handling is pretty terrifying. The car doesn't have any kind of electronic stability, so it's your ability and reflexes, and that's pretty scary with over 600 horses under you. When I drive it I feel like what I imagine it would be like to ride an American Bison, a Great White Shark, and a Rhino combined. It's exhilarating, but terrifyingly humbling at the same time.

It really is the most extreme American style sports car. The new one's, unfortunately, do have stability control. It really kinda waters down the spirit of the car. Next thing you know, they'll start putting flappy paddles on the damn things. Dodge Vipers are supposed to kill you, or at least try to.
