Title: Awesome videos
Post by: El Barto on August 30, 2011, 08:43:27 AM
It's really amazing what people can shoot nowadays.  Hell,  most of us have cellphones that'll shoot 1080p in decent quality.

This one is outstanding.  I could never figure out why the hell anybody would choose to live in the Dakotas, until now.  This was just some guy in his backyard using a prosumer grade camera and a nice quality dolly.  Be sure to watch the HD version:
https://news.yahoo.com/blogs/technology-blog/jaw-droppingly-gorgeous-video-captures-milky-way-earth-234619211.html

This one's a nice quality time lapse.  It was shot by one of the Discovery astronauts over the six weeks prior to his launch.

Lets see some more examples of 21st century videography.

That deer at 1:58 in the first video is so scary.

Also, I wouldn't call a Canon 5D Mark II "prosumer grade". :lol

This may be a dumb question, but when you're out there away from city lights, does the sky actually look that spectacular, or are the cameras here significantly enhancing it?
Title: Re: Awesome videos
Post by: rumborak on November 15, 2011, 01:04:48 AM
It does indeed look that way. Every time I am out there in nature and see it I understand why the ancient people spent so much time pondering what it is.

And dude, you really need to get out of your city or wherever you are :lol

Everybody should find a way to get out and see the Milky Way.  From your neck of the woods it'd be tough,  but it's certainly worth doing.  From my locale,  Colorado is the best I get to manage.  You can camp 10k' up and far away from Denver and see a helluva show.

Yeah from here I have to travel pretty far to get out of that blue area, pretty much the entire east cost sucks. I'm definitely going somewhere to get a good look one day though.

I noticed you guys debating over that in the P&R section. Problem is if you want HSR to get anywhere you have to book like months in advance because they're always sold out (at least to popular places). And it's pretty expensive. I took the Thalys from Brussels to Avignon (a little north of Marseille) this summer and it was more expensive than flying to Rome last year. It was much more comfortable though, true. But still.

It really saddens me that I'll never be able to do this. Even if it hadn't been closed off a few years back, there's a skill set required to get there that I lack.

This is the second power plant built at Niagara; mothballed back in 70's. It's about half a click upstream of the Horseshoe Falls. Water enters through a large tunnel, drops 10 stories nearly vertical down penstock tunnels into the generator room, and then heads out through the tailrace back to the river. In this case, the tailrace ejects behind the curtain of the Horsehoe Falls. Getting to these tunnels is the Holy Grail of urban exploration. Aside from it's awesomeness, it was incredibly challenging to get down to it, and very few people managed it. Here's video of a vantage point of Niagara Falls that only a handful of people have ever seen.

I don't know, I mean, it's not that he would have lost his finger if "sawstop" didn't work. He's moving toward it so carefully that he would notice it if it wouldn't have worked, because moving as slowly towards the blade as he does he wouldn't have lost a finger anyway.
Title: Re: Awesome videos
Post by: MrBoom_shack-a-lack on May 11, 2013, 04:45:21 PM
Yea but that is for real and no sane person would ramm their finger into a running saw blade to test a safety function even if they trust it 100%. I would much rather have a severe scar than to lose a finger.

Well, the speed towards the saw is much higher... In the first video if he even felt the slightest touch of the blade and it didn't go down he would never go further.

I'm not doubting Sawstop, it seems like a great system but I'm just saying that I wasn't all that impressed by him showing it off with his finger the way he did. If he went towards it with considerable momentum like the sausage in the second video then I might be impressed, because if Sawstop didn't work in that case he would lose his finger.

According to the sausage video, he would still get cut, though he just wouldn't lose a finger. Why willingly cut himself?

Post by: MrBoom_shack-a-lack on May 12, 2013, 04:39:08 PM
I don't get what's not to be impressed about? It's the invention that's impress me, the point that he's not forcing his finger into a sawblade dosen't matter because again no sane person would ramm their finger into a running saw blade even if it's 100% safe. The invention is there to lower the risk for cutting of your fingers but that dosen't mean you should stop treat it like a dangerous tool.

Wow. Kinda made my eyes well up a little bit. Partly from the sadness of it all, partly from my immense respect for the surviving loved ones' ability to even look at anything remotely airplane-shaped (let alone building something of that scale) despite having such obviously tragic mental associations with it, and partly from how admirable it is for them to orchestrate something of that magnitude nearly 20 years after it occurred.

Seven minutes has been the benchmark for a while, and now hybrids are starting to blow past that. This is Porsche's 918 hybrid. Some interesting things to note. You can see the speedo when he straightens out the wheel. The car seems to top out at a measly 170 M/h (280 K/h), so I'm guessing that the biggest difference maker is the 2.8 second 0-60; a benefit of torque on demand. Also, there are some great things to listen to (other than the engine noise). You can hear him bottom out on some of the grade changes. You can also hear him run over some rumble strips. Also, on the back straightaway, he uses the red knob to adjust the power profile of the car to eek out maximum speed over acceleration (which doesn't seem to make more than a couple of kph difference).

Holy shit! After 3 pages of awesome videos I think we have a winner at this point. Also, read some of the comments. The 373 down voters are pretty vocal (and insane).

Fireworks filmed with a drone (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a9KZ3jgbbmI)

As always spend the bandwidth on the 1080 version.

Also, I perused through the first 3 pages and a lot of the videos are of course dead links now. Everybody should include a video title when they post something, as a few of them sounded like they'd have been worth hunting down for newcomers or rewatches.

Yeah the music was pretty stupid. Especially the cunts whining about safety. IT'S ALL DANGEROUS, YOU'RE BLOWING SHIT UP IN THE SKY YOU FUCKING TWATS. Then again I hate fireworks. I really don't understand the massive amounts of love the US gives them. The first few times I saw 'em, sure, awesomely awesome. After that they're just loud and annoying to me. If I wanna see big explosions and tons of colors I'll take some E and go to a Michael Bay movie and not get bitten by thousands of mosquitos and have to deal with drunken cumquats and scared children and whiny dogs and *sounds of gunfire and screaming people*

Yea the F-22 Raptor is a beast. The channel that I linked before has some great F-22 videos if you wanna check out.

My favourite is probably the F-35B, everything about it seems so high-end and it also have STOVL and VTOL capabilities like the Harrier which makes it very versatile.

Some cool videos showing STOVL:
F-35B Lightning II (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YJIa2d47jG0)
AV8B Harrier II (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jv61ebDacH8)

Interesting fact, apparently the Harrier is a bitch to fly especially when doing vertical landings because you manually have to control the vertical thrusters (so big props to the pilots) whereas the F-35B from what I understand has a buildt in system of some sort that helps it stabilize in vertical mode, i'm not really sure how it works but in short it's much easier for the pilot to control basically.

This is a wonderful idea. It's surprisingly humanizing. From Wired:

Quote
Venture into space and you may experience a phenomenon called the overview effect. It comes with seeing Earth, a small, blue marble, against the vastness of space. Everything suddenly seems small, yet marvelous. Astronauts who’ve felt it have described an intense feeling of connectedness with humanity, and a profound euphoria similar to what you might experience in deep meditation.

Two creative technologists have created an oddly mesmerizing website that provides something approximating the overview effect, by drawing on the most mundane thing you might imagine: YouTube videos.

Astronaut.io shows an endless stream of random videos against a view of the planet from low Earth orbit. Scenes from a high school weight lifting competition might follow a birthday party in Texas that follows a man in Russia repairing his motorbike. You never know what to expect, yet the videos share something in common.

Andrew Wong and James Thompson created an algorithm that seeks videos fitting specific criteria: uploaded within the past week, with generic file names (IMG, MOV WMV) as titles, and zero views. The result is a fascinating glimpse at the mundane, perplexing, and oftentimes sweet events of everyday life.

While I don't care much for the background imagery, they do a very good job of portraying the vastness of Earthborn reality. At any given moment, millions of people are fucking like banshees. People are holding the hands of loved ones as they die. People are giving birth. People are fighting, praying, marrying and begging for scraps. This tries to show you random slices of that reality.

Cool concept, kind of boring video if you ask me.  But I do like the idea.  What I immediately noticed in not just your response, but the videos too, is that it's missing two things that we spent most of our earthly time doing.  Sleeping and working.  Some of the videos may be able to say they are of "working" but I feel like someone sleeping needs to be in that video at some point (and maybe I missed it).

Both valid opinions. At the same time the boringness is actually important. The mundanity of it all is key, as pointless, fruitless tasks are something inherent to us all. Moreover, if you were to include specific things then the whole point would be lost. The randomness is what makes it cohesive as an overview, and some guy washing his POS Yugo is common to us all while being completely different to our own reality.

Totally.  It's just not fun to watch imo, but it makes sense and I do like the concept of it.  I really like how they grabbed the videos on youtube with no views, because then you know it's the shit that is really so mundane and yet so ordinary to humanity.

I've always wondered why there's no civilian variant of that to be put on freighters. Piracy would end. The distinctive shape would become such a deterrent that phony ones would be just about as effective once the first few boats got turned into confetti.

People are using machine learning to remaster, colorize, and stabilize very old movies. This is probably as close as we can get to seeing what life was like 130 years ago. Interestingly, much of it looks the same, and yet there are things that jump out at you as starkly different. One thing you immediately notice is that people were actually more into photobombing then than they are now. And damn, talk about beards!

This is so amazing, what a diffrent time in so many ways. To think that everyone of those people had a lifestory to tell and not a single one is alive today. It's a bit to abstract to fully comprehend I think.

Here is a part 1 and 2 of an awesome documentary series, discussing the Cyberpunk genre. Made by a channel called Indigo Gaming, these are really in depth examinations of the genre. Everything from the most well known Cyberpunk movies like Blade Runner, to Japanese anime like Akira or Ghost in the Shell. From some well known novels like Neuromancer, to less well known tabletop role playing games. Even some really obscure B-Movies. :lol

Kind of seems like the most fundamental part of building a secret tunnel would be to not post youtube videos about it, but what do I know.

I saw a video about 5150 (the studio) the other day, and Ed had to be kind of clandestine about the whole thing to get around permits and codes and whatnot. Officially, the last seven VH albums were recorded in Ed's Racquetball court. I suspect this guy means hidden, rather than secret. Otherwise, he might be in for some unexpected trouble.

Hole In Earth Leads To Massive 220 Foot Drop (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oiYAWVMJsUw&ab_channel=ActionAdventureTwins)

Sounds kinda like a clickbait title but this ones legit. That's pretty scary finding a hole like that in a forest. Very cool though and if I wouldn't be so freaky about heights that would be a cool thing to find and explore.

Really cool and scary (specially after the 7 minute mark).
