WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE
Discuss.
-
Is she attacking the east cost or California+2?
-
Apparently it's going to disrupt MLG Raleigh this weekend. That's all I really care about.
-
It's going to hit east NC, then go up and hit NY and all of the states above it.
Near where I live in NY, we're going to get 60 MPH winds, supposedly.

Next thing you know we're going to have to deal with earthquakes too.
-
Well, I wish you Easterners the best, in terms of your making it through the incoming storm okay.
I sincerely hope you people from that side of the continent remain in good health and morale.
Next thing you know we're going to have to deal with earthquakes too.
That's more likely to be a problem that'd kill me off, Easterner.
-
It seems that Irene has finally left Puerto Rican space, by the grace of God, everyone survive.
ROOOOOOOAAAAAAAAR
-
I guess skydivingninja, hef, and I can all die.

Please don't, man. I dig you a lot and the forum needs hughheffnerdaddy alive and well, him being a mod and all.
-
But seriously, is it still a cat 1 hurricane? If it is, don't expect there to be much damage.
-
I live in Puerto Rico, but I was sleeping at the time so I missed it. :-[

Good thing it didn't kill you; if it did, then you wouldn't have even known you'd died until you woke up the next morning.

I live in Miami.
BUT I'M NOT IN FLORIDA RIGHT NOW :metal

WHAT! I thought I was the only Puerto Rican in this forum!
YOU MUST DIE!!!
-

It's a category 4. It'll be category 2 by the time that it hits New England. They're talking about it being one of the biggest hurricanes to hit the entire coast, but it won't really do much damage other than power outages and blowing things around at several miles per hour.

Hum, then it has gain a lot of strength after leaving PR.

If you want, we can reduce the Puerto Rican population in this forum without dismissing anyone.

Thanks. I think you're swell too :-* Also I'm from New Orleans and have evacuated for Georges([zhoorzh]1998), Ivan(2004), Katrina(2005), and Gustav(2008.) Old hat to this cat.

Bitch please.
Hugo (1989), Marilyn (1995), Hortense (1996), Georges (1998), Jeanne (2004), Irene (2011)
And those are just the ones that have touched land while I've been alive.
-
^Hey re-re I didn't list Andrew(1992), Lili(2002), or Rita(2005 RIGHT on the heels of Katrina) because I didn't evacuate for those despite their Louisianian landfalls. I win 7-6. Or 8-6 if Irene doesn't stand me up.

I didn't evacuate for any of them. BOOYAH!

We have reggaeton here 24/7. Far more destructive and obnoxious than any of those hurricanes.
-
You mean reggae's big in Puerto Rico?
I thought it was just popular in it's land of origin and community colleges.

Argh, don't even get me started on that shit!! I live in fucking Carolina!!

Reggae and reggaeton are 2 different things. And this is the land of origin of reggaeton.
-
Anyone know the chances of it doing any damage in Vermont?
-
Reggae and reggaeton are 2 different things. And this is the land of origin of reggaeton.
What is reggaeton, and how does it differ from reggae without the ton?
-
Should shake and I start comparing earthquakes we have survived? LOL
seriously though I didn't even know about this untill last night when I was giving my friend from the east coast shit for the earthquake....
I love the fact that the only affects hurricanes have on us out here are some drizzle from them raping texas... or Mexico

You see the drop in quality?

-
Your example of reggae is non-existent, apparently.
Though, I'll take dead silence over that reggaeton anyday!
-
Try the first link now.
-
Hmm, that reggae tune, Buffalo Soldier, is very swell.
And my feelings about that reggaeton still stand firmly, namely my feeling that it sucks.
-
I take 1 over 2.
oh Shake and I can compare forest fires
-
I've never had forest fires reach my community, though back in fall of 07, they did come close and the ash in the air was so bad, I got to miss a couple days of school.
-
Anyone know the chances of it doing any damage in Vermont?
I'm sure it's going to skip over Vermont just like anyone else driving through that area.
-

Though, I'll take dead silence over that reggaeton anyday!
Now imagine it everywhere, I once had my entire beach vacations ruined by it because some people that worked there put it full blast near the beach house every day. People play it at abominable volumes :/
This post/rant thing was originally huge, I don't want to change the topic too much though. I just hate that music a lot.
Anyways, me and my family once stopped a tiny forest fire from reaching a friend's house with shovels :D My dad had some bad lung problems afterwards though. :-[
-

Depending on where, you'll probably just get rain. You might want to make sure that you don't have anything lying around outside, though, because it'll probably get blown around.
-
The forecast for my town this Sunday is 14+ inches of rain....
-
I think a lot of people in the Northeast are going to be completely unprepared for what they get this weekend.
-
What I've seen on the track of the storm is that the center of the storm will be over the Atlantic when it passes me, though I'll still be in the storm path. It is supposed to be a Cat 2 then.
-
I think a lot of people in the Northeast are going to be completely unprepared for what they get this weekend.
I not preparing at all.... It's 2011 now, we haven't lost power for more then a few hours at any time over the last decade. My only concern is a tree landing on my car. I think I'm going to park it In the middle of my front yard.

be prepared for the lawn to be so soaked that you can't move your car from that spot for about a week.

Storm is now tracking further west, putting the entire East Coast at risk.

Anyone know how Massachusetts will be impacted? I'm moving up to college on the day it's supposed to arrive there. :lol

Depends where you are in MA. They aren't sure what part of the state is gonna get hit the worst... but I'm in the center of the state so I'm probably gonna get hit either way. :lol
-
The link I posted has a graphic showing the projected storm path, timing and strength.
-
When was the last time a hurricane ever went that far North in the East Coast?
-
I know we got hit pretty hard in 99. I'm sure there have been some since then though, but I'm too lazy to check the list. :lol
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_New_England_hurricanes#2001.E2.80.932004
EDIT - Looks like 91 was the last time it was still a hurricane upon landfall for New England... not sure about the Canadians though.
-
Derple.
-
Good luck easterners.
-
When was the last time a hurricane ever went that far North in the East Coast?
Hurricane Isabel blew over in 2003. That's the last one I remember.
-
I'm pretty worried about this! My parents are talking about evacuating (we live on LI)...but where?
Oh, also, I had plans this weekend, Irene. Fuck you.
-

JOE EVACUATE TO MY HOUSE
I have a cellar and we can tell each other ghost stories and draw on each other's bodies with markers as a sign of friendship and good will and 3 more months of winter
-
Anyone know how Massachusetts will be impacted? I'm moving up to college on the day it's supposed to arrive there. :lol
Um.
40-80 MPH winds, you're not going to be going there. lol
Most people seem to be underestimating this storm. Long Island is going to be especially fucked, and all of the states that are north of NY are going to be trapped into this.
-
I'm in Pennsylvania. How fucked am I?
-
Um, assuming you've always lived there, I'm afraid you've been fucked since day 1.
-
On a more serious note, you're less fucked, however, you should be ready for surprises.
-
Um, assuming you've always lived there, I'm afraid you've been fucked since day 1.
As someone who grew up in PA, I say:
:hefdaddy
Anyway, the current path has they eye going right over our apartment (in Queens, NY), making landfall only about four miles away. This will be interesting.
-
I live on the coast of Connecticut presumably in the direct path and being a homeowner, I am concerned.
-
Yeah, this has gon from an excuse to get blasted on hurricanes Saturday night to starting to freak me out a bit...knowing what happens to the trains and subways after a heavy rain, I could see NYC being crippled for all of next work week.
-
They are considering shutting down the entire MTA depending on conditions. I'm glad I don't have to rely on it. However, I'm only a few feet above sea level here in NJ. Should be interesting, and I hope it doesn't go past the point of being interesting.
-
i'll be telecommuting (working from home) on Monday...my concern is NJ Transit which sucks on a good day, I could see them having track and electical problems for a week if we get hit
-
Come on IRENE too-loo rye-aye!
-
I guess skydivingninja, hef, and I can all die.
Thanks for acknowledging me too. :(

Uh, I wouldn't count on that Chino. If it's as bad as they're saying, you can expect may poles to blow over and trees to fall on power lines. It's going to happen, and it's NOT going to be an easy fix in torrential rain and high winds.
I'd also worry about flood damage.
-
I guess I'm in the direct path of it now. Gonna spend all day moving shit from the outside indoors
-
Don't like die or anything.
-
Looks like we're going to get a crap load of rain here in NH. I suppose I'll bring some stuff in off the deck just in case.
-
Don't like die or anything.
If I die, I request that someone hires an assassin to enact revenge upon Irene for me.
(but really, I have a pretty safe cellar so I'm just more worried about property damage)
-
Dude, you don't really want to be in a cellar during a hurricane. :lol
-
Dude, you don't really want to be in a cellar during a hurricane. :lol
Really? :lol
I dunno where else I'd go. I figured underground is safer than upstairs, where winds could be smashing windows and hurling objects around at me. :P
I'm just used to tornados, guess I'll have to re-evaluate my survival guide for hurricanes. :lol
-
well I mean, there's going to be flooding...
I don't know how close to the shoreline you live, but if you were as close as Zack's house or something I wouldn't want to be there.
-
I live in the center of MA. Not sure what our area's sea level is, but I live on a pretty big hill anyways. We'll probably get a bit of flooding, but nowhere as bad as people on the cape will get.
-
my college move in this weekend is gonna be chaos

You have never even experienced a hurricane in your entire life. You can't compare any Connecticut weather event in the past 10 years to a full fledged hurricane. Just sayin.
I was 20 years old when Gloria hit Connecticut. It will be devastating for some, and some may be without power for days. Its wise to be prepared. I am.

He hasn't. He has no idea what may happen. I remember Gloria. It wreaked havoc across Connecticut and Irene's path is almost identical to this point.
-
i just hope i can get into uconn quick tomorrow morning then, wait it out there
-
Its looking more and more like this monster with surpass Gloria in terms of devastation. I strongly advise anyone who isn't taking this storm serious to change your feelings and prepare. You may be without power for several days. No joke.
-
I hear ya Tick
They have closed the Garden State Parkway south of Exit 98 starting at 8pm tonight
All eastbound highways are now operating as westbound only to get people as far away from the coast as possible
Atlantic City has been shut down...all casinos have closed and guests were asked to leave
NJ tranist is stopping all operations at noon tomorrow
MTA (NYC Subways and trains) have ordered a shutdown of services at noon tomorrow
The governor has ordered all bridges be closed if winds exceeed 60 mph
better safe than sorry
-
I just hope people heed the warnings and use common sense when evacuating...
The news here said people are in big lines for gas, which is silly.

The pumps don't work when there's no power...so that's not silly at all.

Got some gas and I'll set up and fire up my generator tomorrow. I have a feeling they'll be no electricity for a few day plus. BATTEN DOWN THE HATCHES!!!!!

as a south florida boy my whole life, i've seen my fair share of hurricanes.
realistically, be cautious - but don't freak out, it's not going to be as bad as you think. as for which room is safest, it's the bathroom.
be prepared, just in case. seriously though, as a cat 2...it's most likely going to be like a very nasty thunderstorm, nothing more. outages and flooding will probably happen, but it's not gonna be anything severe. just stock up on beer and have a good time during it.
-
I guess skydivingninja, hef, and I can all die.

Hee hee. Forgot you were from here. What major city is closest to you?
-
were going to get a mediocre rain storm at best in NJ =/ to many people freeking the hell out. my local grocery stores are COMPLETELY out of water and bread ahaha

What's going to make it worse here is that our half-assed, century old public transit system chokes every time it rains...so I expect trains to be out for a couple of days, and subways for a while longer (a lot of our power stations are along the water, as well). Also, it's been a long-ass time since Gloria, so alot of our vulnerable trees are still standing, and will now finally come down. In FL, you guys have storms that thin the herd of the weak trees fairly frequently.
-
By the way, Gadough's propane tank business must be making a lot of money right now.
-
So it looks like this thing might miss Nova Scotia... by being too far west to hit us...
That's a new one. Usually they either hit us or drift too far east. Right now, it looks like this thing is going to hit New Brunswick dead on, which almost never happens.

also, explain to me what gives you any expertise as to hurricanes living in queens? i guess having a cat 4 hurricane (hurricane charley, you nub) nearly miss my town and demolish one that is nearby doesn't give what i say any integrity. keep in mind, that's only one of the many that has affected me.
nice try, brotherman.
-
I grew up in Florida. When I was maybe 8 or 9 some hurricane was coming and was going to hit us (Boca Raton) and we had to pack up and leave for a week or so until it was over. My family however left the dog, not sure why. When we came back the entire house was flooded, and the dog had moved up to the 2nd floor in order to not drown. Luckily that was the extent of the damage.
-
I live in Virginia, in the path of Irene. I'm getting out of here tomorrow morning since I live two blocks from a beach and that's definitely not in my list of "things that make me feel good about hurricanes." Hoping it won't be too bad here, but you never can tell with hurricanes. A wobble to the east or west is all the difference when one passes near you, after all.

Dude, wtf is your problem?
I was simply trying to state that a hurricane making a direct hit on NYC is going to be a very different beast than the same hurricane hitting somewhere with a very different infrastructure and geography. I certainly did nothing to diminish the stronger storms that have hit your area.
Yes, the overgrowth here (because we don't get frequent hurricanes) is a serious source of concern...weaker trees will be coming down on houses and powerlines all over the place, especially as we've had the wettest August on record, so they'll be easily uprooted.
Also, I lived in a hurricane-prone area for five years.
Maybe I'm not as experienced with hurricanes, but at least I have decent reading comprehension skills.

Well, he's right, really. Plus in Miami it's full of those fucking palm trees that bend like rubber and are rarely uprooted anyways.
But yeah, if you guys can't get enough water before the storm hits (and are scared of your taps drying otu), we always used to fill our bathtubs up before the storm hit and that helped out a few times. But yeah take care of yourselves, but you'll be alright. I've been through many, much bigger hurricanes without a single problem.

prev·a·lence [prev-uh-luhns]
noun
the condition of being prevalent, or widespread: the prevalence of AIDS in developing countries.
I'm assuming you meant "substance", but in that case you have a very loose definition of what constitutes substance. Also, your response hardly rises to the level of being a rebuttal.
In summary, the last line of my previous post stands. Brotherman.

Just got back from the bus station. My trip to NYC for an interview was canceled. Best wishes to all those who have to deal with the storm directly.

The only problem is that in Florida, buildings are built for hurricanes. They aren't, up here.
That being said, what you said is pretty much what I'm expecting. I just hope that nobody's dumb and leaves things outside that end up breaking windows.
-
Yeah it's a big problem for us being built for safety
-
Stopping in quick because I'm thinking of people like Andrew in the Baltimore area and all those who I know in Jersey, NYC, etc.
The weather channel just mentioned Binghamton (though the one guy had a hard time saying it, heh) and it looks like my area is getting hard rain perhaps and wind. My house is up above the frost line, so when it rains below it sometimes snows up here... likewise we get quite intense winds, so it should be fun. I quite enjoy weather so I'm looking forward to putting up a webcam or something and just letting it run. :D
Here's hoping you all stay safe.
-
I'm pretty sure buildings up here are built to withstand hurricane winds. Wind loads are a huge factor when building sky scrapers.
-
We're about to start a couple of final preps before commencing drinking (the wife damn near bought out the liquor store). Need to tie down everything on the balcony (no room to bring the grill inside), run some additional laundry and do some dishes...want a clean slate in case we lose power. Not expecting to lose power until the early hours of Sunday, but I'd rather not be racing the clock...I'd rather be getting blasted on hurricanes. And yes, we thought ahead and got stuff for a hangover-busting breakfast on Sunday, that we can make even w/o electricity, as we have a gas range.
-
Just read the whole thread... not a lot of substance here but I guess those in harm;s way sure aren't here. :lol
So, yeah. www.weather.com and https://www.wunderground.com/wundermap/?lat=27.7&lon=-77.4&zoom=6&type=hyb&rad=0&wxsn=0&svr=0&cams=0&sat=0&riv=0&mm=0&hur=1&hur.wr=0&hur.cod=1&hur.fx=1&hur.obs=1&fire=0&ft=0&sl=0 are good resources.

Effects expected on the big east coast cities are here:
-
JEN!!! :heart :) :heart
-
:)
I can't believe NYC has mandatory evacuations and every state up and down the east coast is in an official state of emergency. sick! :metal
-
Yeah, it's pretty crazy.
I am just thanking my lucky stars that this time, we won't get any of it. But I am fretful for much of the northeast. You guys stay safe.
-
TWC's live stream twitter feed from their experts (https://www.weather.com/tv/tvshows/Livestream ) just had a retweet of this pic of a NC beach area right before dark tonight (Irene isn't even ashore yet) --

yikes..
-
Everyone stay safe....You too Jen!!! :-* :-* :-*
-
I live in Southern Maryland and it looks like if the storm deviates to the west just a tad, it will pass right over top of me! Fun stuff :neverusethis:
Either way though, seems it will be pretty bad down here.
-
I haven't been food shopping in about a week, so I decided to go to the supermarket after work. Turned around as soon as i got to the parking lot; I don't need anything that bad. It was as to be expected. Also, I've never been known to be the prepared boyscout, so I still have laundry and dishes to do, but I figure I have time tomorrow to do all that. Other than that, I have flashlights with extra batteries, and a bunch of books I've been meaning to read.
-
Everyone stay safe....You too Jen!!! :-* :-* :-*
Stay off the freakin outer banks!!!
-
we have about 6 cases of bottled water, several flashlights with new batteries in them, several candles, and a generator. can't forget the generator. :p
-
My friend had to cancel his wedding in Atlantic City.
-
So I'm scheduled for an all day shift pushing carts at work sunday during the storm. This'll be fun!!
-
Happy birthday to you :lol
-
Got my booze, car's all gassed up, got the generator ready to go, time to just sit back and...read.

fuck this storm man, cost me a daytrip on Saturday and some overtime at work this week.
We're mostly prepared for the oncoming insanity though, just have to make a few more quick preparations, probably tonight when my dad gets home from work. Here's to hoping I'm still able to post on DTF come late Sunday afternoon.
-
The storm might end up giving me more work in the coming months. I'll get to witness the extent of it on Wednesday.
-
Anyone have any idea how it will affect southern Vermont?

Likely it will drown everyone in the state.

Really hoping all of you stay safe and be careful out on the East Coast
I would also like to send a prayer to The Omega Order's East Coast hub, I need my box set!
-
So I'm a Miami homeboy that's not in the U.S right now. How'd the storm treat you guy Floridian guys? (I heard it wasn't TOO exciting :P)

Here's a quote to set the scene for today, the biggest expected day in Hurricane Irene's destruction --
North Carolina Gov. Bev Perdue urged the 3.5 million residents in the coastal part of the state to get out of Irene's path. She said that Ocracoke Island in the Outer Banks was now clear of people and that the ferry service would be shut down. Railroads in eastern North Carolina will be shut down Saturday.
"This hurricane is real. It is headed our way," Perdue said at a press conference this morning. "I urge every citizen along the coastal plains to evacuate. It is so much better to be safe than to be sorry. We can rebuild houses ... but families cannot be replaced."
But it turned out there remained holdouts on Hatteras and Ocracoke islands who'd boarded up their homes, secured their possessions and settled in -- refusing to leave.
In response, local officials said they were ordering dozens more bodybags, The Associated Press reported.
"I anticipate we're going to have people floating on the streets, and I don't want to leave them lying there," said Richard Marlin, fire chief for one of the seven villages on Hatteras. "The Coast Guard will either be pulling people off their roofs like in Katrina or we'll be scraping them out of their yards."

We're just starting to hear drops of rain here in my area (Binghamton, NY) -- here's the latest satellite image showing that we have a LONG LONG two days ahead (since the outermost clouds of this thing are only JUST passing over)...
https://t.co/rr3GIct
-
PS - not only is NYC mass transit all shutting down at noon, including all area airports (causing nearly 7000 canceled flights), but fare is free and dogs and cats are allowed.
amazing.
-
The pier in Atlantic Beach, NC is gone. The hurricane tore it down and washed it away out to sea.
-
Taking all the loose items of my land and storing them in the sheds. Don't want any projectiles flying around tomorrow.
-
Carteret County on the NC coast has roughly 3 feet of standing water on the roadways.
-
Wind is starting to pick up and there's a slight drizzle outside at the moment... it's coming, and according to the current maps this is going to hit us hard.
-
request - those posting comments about things going on in their own area, please post the nearest notable town and your state. this is too interesting, don't want to miss details!
Expecting enough rain to overflow our pool... what do people do about that? It's above ground... not sure what to expect with that one! Also starting to think I should remove the deck box even though it's kinda heavy..
-
Taking all the loose items of my land and storing them in the sheds. Don't want any projectiles flying around tomorrow.
Some things will stay where they are, actually. I remember a frisbee not going anywhere during a powerful category 3 hurricane some years ago. :lol
-
Jen. Do you have a portable sump pump? TV's been saying take you pool water level down no more than a foot.
-

James, my wife has so many pots from her thousand plants around plus all our plastic chairs and a few shepherds hooks. My wife is a clutter bug. :lol
-
Holy crap haha
Be safe all you peoples
-
Jen. Do you have a portable sump pump? TV's been saying take you pool water level down no more than a foot.
no but our pool's pump can be used to backwash the system and let out some water. thanks!
edit - should be fun here because we not only live at an elevation of about 1600' compared to the rest of my area's 840' (fun for wind), but we also have our house built right into a hillside. the water normally flows down behind the house then diverts around it due to our massive new drainage system, then continues down the hill in front of us and down to the lake. Wonder if we'll get washed away? LOL
-
I'll get a creepy/interesting diversion this afternoon. The main LIRR artery runs right behind our apartment. For the first time since we've lived here (five years), there won't be the sound of trains running, as the system is shutting down. However, the low-lying yards are being emptied, and we're not that far from the huge Jamaica and Sunnyside yards (The Sunnyside yard has LIRR, NJT, Amtrak and maintenance). So all of the trains that are being layed-up on the tracks will be going by us.
Dingy, humid and very calm here right now. Jen, for reference for my future updates, we're in Kew Gardens (11415).
EDIT: Rain started falling at 9:50.

No rain yet in Nassau County.

Hang in there guys. Hi Jen.
-
I'm in PA no where near the sea. I don't even think I'll lose power.
-
Just trying to get things all set for tomorrow. One of my friends moved into school early and they have to evacuate until Monday, so he'll be staying with me for the weekend.
Should actually be kind of fun. :lol But I hope everyone stays safe!
-
Just woke up and its raining damn hard now. Haven't gone outside, but the wind sounds pretty bad too. At the moment its like a really bad thunderstorm, and according to the maps we got a long way to go! Trying to go back to sleep now though, and we'll see how it progresses from here (I have to go to work at 10PM tonight if the power doesn't go out before then, that's gonna be fun).
Oh and I'm in Prince Frederick, MD (20678).
-
I'm sad. I won't get any winds more than 40 mph.
-
I'm rather firmly in the to be 58+ MPH wind zone, I think right now it's around 30.
-
I'm sad. I won't get any winds more than 40 mph.
Spoken like a kid with nothing to lose.
-
I'm sad. I won't get any winds more than 40 mph.

Damn straight.
-
Sparked up the generator and it roared but I hope I don't have to use it. Took down all the things that can fly around outside and bracing for tomorrow around noon. Hope everybody stays safe.
-
We just started to get rain. WOO.
-
I'm sad. I won't get any winds more than 40 mph.
Sad? You should be thankful.
-
Raining here. The weather warnings issued for my area say 35-45mph winds with 65mph gusts. for the inland county area around me I think the biggest risk is losing power. My condo at the beach will get hit with the hurricane force winds but its a strong building and has withstood up to Cat 3 in the past.
-
The NOAA site has a link to a video of the hurricane's growth over the last few days un to the present.

Be safe, any and everyone who is being affected by this terrible storm.

now, if it could just do something about Seaside...
-
Looks like it's on track to hit western New Brunswick, and may be felt as far west as Toronto. That's just bizarre.
I am glad that, for once, it looks like one of these things won't be plowing straight through Halifax.
-
Our fucking deadbeat neighbors haven't tied down the chairs on their balcony...and asking them to do so could result in a physical confrontation. Grrrr.....
We've had a couple of bands of rain so far, heavy enough to disrupt the satellite TV.
-
I'm sad. I won't get any winds more than 40 mph.
Sad? You should be thankful.
I want to experience a big hurricane. I wish everyone health and happiness, but I want to experience some massive winds.
-
Do you also want to experience the roofing being ripped off of your house?
-
i'm ready for death
fuck you irene, fucking cunt
-
Hope you guys stay OK. You should move to Wales, we don't get hurricanes cause we're awesome.
-
I'm sad. I won't get any winds more than 40 mph.

I want to experience a big hurricane. I wish everyone health and happiness, but I want to experience some massive winds.
Here in Nova Scotia, we usually get these hurricanes after they've lost a significant amount of force, and they're still pretty serious. Trust me, as interesting as it may seem, you don't actually want to experience one, especially right after it makes landfall.
-
Yeah Cole, I don't think you realize how destructive and outright bad they can be, and how much it can affect your life.
I won't lie though, I remember being 18 and walking outside in the very middle of an eye of a hurricane. It was eerily calm and quiet out...you could feel something intense was coming in how quiet it was. It felt light and heavy at the same time, and everything literally seemed gray outside, even the greenest trees and grass. Very surreal experience, 5 or 10 minutes of awe.
-
I'm sad. I won't get any winds more than 40 mph.

I am not intending to cast aspersions on you, but that sounds moronic.

I mean, I get the whole "wanting to experience for the sake of experience" thing but hurricanes kinda suck balls. Having your house flooded and RUINING literally everything you own (including your house and car) is horrible and traumatizing. Not worth it
-
I'm not even in a bad area. I'll get like 4 inches of rain and some minor wind. No big deal.
-

ITT: Cole's a nub
-
Near Baltimore, so far nothing but rain and gusts around 30-40 MPH, but the actual hurricane isn't supposed to hit us until 2am Sunday.
-
Rain's been on and off so far, it broke long enough before for my dad and I to move our grill from the backyard into the garage in case we lose power and want to use it to cook.
-

Some people learn that hammers are dangerous only after repeatedly hitting themselves in the balls with them.

My dad is off to get National Guard ALL OVER Irene.

This. Even then the gusts are only supposed to reach 65mph.

Yowza.
Watching some of the reporting on it today on CNN and Fox News, you gotta feel for those reporters who are sent almost into the heart of the chaos to cover the story. One reporter was even standing in a flooded area where the water was up over his knees. :eek
-
almost 4:30 and it's not raining right now here in north NJ, I thought the rain would have at least been steady by now
-
Power just went out for a minute. Came back on quickly, but not a good sign of things to come!

Good thing I'm (barely) east of Toronto.
No hurricanes fo' me. :lol

With masking tape.

Same in Long Beach, NY where there were people sufring. Apparently it was made clear that there would be no rescue attempts for those people and they were entirely on their own.
-
people like that never die though. it's always the little kid that was walking to his mailbox and got flattened by a tree, or the old lady that slips and chokes on a fork in the dark with no power. the guy who goes and hangs ten on a tsunami wave never dies
-
Just got super dark in Apalachin, NY near Binghamton, NY. Started to rain a minute ago. Its getting suddenly pretty cold after being humid and warm all day.

the rain's finally become steady here, hasn't gotten too ominous/windy yet though.
-
It was raining out here near Albany/Schenectady (NY), but it stopped. It'll start raining again later - right now, it's just humid as fuck.
We've already tied the chairs to the deck and flipped tables upside down to reduce surface area.
I wonder if anyone will have a mailbox after this is done, considering how they keep getting knocked over by the plows in the winter and then lazily stuffed back into the ground.

Yep. That's... pretty much the sky right now. Except, a bit darker.
-
saw quite possibly my favorite shot of all the coverage so far a little while ago, they cut to the main room at Grand Central Station and it was 100% empty... a little creepy but very cool

Yup saw that. Flipping from weather channel to msnbc.
Albany's gonna get hit harder than me by a good bit - I'd tie the tables as well if you can't bring them in.
We took the deck furniture under the deck, stacked it with the heaviest stuff against the lightest, and then bungee corded it all tightly to the deck itself.. hoping that will do.
This is the back of our house that we didn't get a chance to brace yet with boulders... I'm a big worried it coudl be up against the house by Monday morning:

-
So I'm stocked with with three bottles of wine, a case of beer, and a good bag of the green stuff. Watching Battle Los Angeles on blu ray from Netflix with my gf. It's pretty windy and raining hard in cetrAl NJ. Looking forward to watching the storm from my apartment balcony assuming a tree doesn't fly through my window.
-
Raining for real here now...we're on our third hurricane each, just had some more chili, and we're working our way through season one of Weeds.
-
still nothing crazy on the rain front here, though I doubt I'll be saying that in a few minutes after I have to run outside to help my dad bring my grandmother in from the car :lol
-
Dammit, the hurricane's moving back onto the water again. It's going to pick up some more speed before it hits again.
-
Getting quite a bit of rain here in Worcester county, MA.
Not even close to the heavy stuff yet though.
-
Power is now constantly going out and back on here. Wind gusts are up to 70 mph now, and ridiculous amounts of rain.

I heard that show is very good... I need to start watching, but after I finish Battlestar Galactica.
-
Do it. It's not "HAHA that is funny," but it is ridiculous and makes you want to watch more. I also find the main character very sexy. She is older but I dunno, she is damn sexy
And it has Kevin Nealon. So there you go
-
We're really liking it so far. Hopefully the power will stay on so we can make it through the rest of season one, and all of season two. $16.99 per season at Target!
And yes, Mary Louise Parker makes my pants happy.

Weeds feels like such a chick show.

At least there isn't a tree loose on the edge of that though, that's what would worry me.
Out of curiosity how long until it reaches Delaware area?

Rain has definitely picked up here, but the wind not so much yet.

Some good advice here folks:

The Dolphin Bait n Switch is one of Mother Nature's oldest, and most effective tricks

-
I looked at wind speeds reported at different airports near Norfolk, VA and the DelMarVa peninsula, which is close to the most intense part of the storm right now, and most are in the 35mph range with gusts up to 50-60mph. Not quite what was expected, though I'm not sure what kind of storm surges are going on.
-
I just went to the dumpster and I saw some people in the other apartments taping up their windows.

You know, I remember as a kid everyone in FL would do this. There must be some reason for it.
-
I think it's so if the window breaks big sharp pieces wont come flying in at you.
-
the rain is getting pretty super cereal, but the wind hasn't really kicked up yet.
-
I can't tell what's going on out there and I don't care to go out and check, but I just heard a pretty horrifying scream coming from just outside of my house. Shit's getting real.
-
Hasn't shit been real for you for many hours now?
-
Cole's posts here:
As amazing as it is to think about just how strong mother nature can be, you DO NOT, do not, want 100+ mph winds anywhere near close you.
-
Hasn't shit been real for you for many hours now?
Well yeah, but no people screaming in the streets until now.
-
Oh, I see. I suppose shit has indeed just gotten real.
-
The wife and I took off to Hershey pa for a weekend get away. I decided I would rather be in the jacuzzi with my wife than be without power in the middle of a hurricane.

did steve jobs pay for your vacation?
-
Just had the power lost and then back on quickly twice.
-
My power's hanging in there. Thank god.
-
Power has been out for a few hours now here. No idea yet, but there was many warnings before the storm got here that power could be lost for days. Hope it doesn't come to that :(
As for the storm, the rain seems to have let up a bit, the wind is still strong though. I think the worst has passed
by this point.
-
Tornado warnings are up here. Definitely windy and rainy...really reminds me of a blizzard in a way. It's weird knowing that all the things that sound like distant trucks are actually the wind.
-
4:30am in CT, and power is still good, it's definitely rainy, but we've had a lot more wind than this before, so the worst isn't even close to being here.
-
Ok, we're both awake and the wife is hungover...so I'm making sausages at 5 AM in a hurricane.
Winds 25-35, with occasional gusts higher, and lots of rain. There are points when it's eerily quiet, though...and that's when I hear this faint mechanical hum in the distance, that sounds like a train idling. It freaks me out a bit.
No damage that I can see outside, but we're still 4-5 hours from the worst of it.
-
I've had to live without power for quite a few days, thanks to hurricanes (Wilma comes to mind). It actually becomes quite nice (in a peaceful way, I suppose) after a while. Plus, for a guy that's used to the countryside, it's nice to see the stars at night for once.
-
Here in RI, we're still hours away from it, too. But, my wife took our dog outside about 45 minutes ago and there were some massive gusts of wind. I made her come back inside because I was afraid some branches would fall on her..... first time I've ever been truly frightened by a hurricane - and, it's not even HERE yet!!!! :lol
edit..
I only live a few blocks from Narragansett Bay and it's supposedly hitting at high tide. This is going to be scary.
-
SE, are you high enough to avoid flooding?
In addition to the weather outside, there's the windstorm inside...that chicken chili earlier is catching up with me.

:lol
Woke up around 4:30 to heavy rain pouring on my air conditioner... haven't been able to get back to sleep. Might as well be up now while I still have power, I guess!
Still got a few more hours before it starts kicking up.
-
Yeah, the house where I live isn't "right" on the water, but my town (Bristol) is a coastal town, which means the streets flood easily. Luckily, my place is very high and I don't think water will flood inside (maybe the basement).
Oh and.... :lol at the "windstorm inside" comment. haha!
-
The wife and I took off to Hershey pa for a weekend get away. I decided I would rather be in the jacuzzi with my wife than be without power in the middle of a hurricane.
did steve jobs pay for your vacation?
I guess you could say that. Made some nice money with apple stock And chased out a few weeks ago.
-
Winds are in the 20's right now and its raining at a good clip. The trenches on both sides of the streets are flowing very fast. Hope the power doesn't go out. The worst is yet to come.
-
Just woke up. Its raining a steady non-voilent bit. The wind is blowing a bit but nothing like our regular spring thunderstorms. Radar shows this is about as bad as it's gonna get for me.
I am disappointed. I wanted a storm at least as strong as normal storms are here -- they never hurt anyone or anything. Oh well.
Tropical Depression Ten is next -- the Canadian Farmer's Almanac predicted Irene becoming only thundershowers and gales by the time it hit Nova Scotia, but says TD Ten will be a hurricane still when it gets there around Sept 3 - 7. I think they're a little early but look forward to seeing how accurate it is. :tup
edit -- isolated gusts occasionally make me wonder if I spoke too soon. :lol (Binghamton, NY area)
-
Ok, we're both awake and the wife is hungover...so I'm making sausages at 5 AM in a hurricane.
You know tornados are common in hurricanes... when that gets close, just go into tornado mode. With your webcam. Thanks. :D
-
the storm was also a bit... underwhelming here. It's been raining for like 12+ hours, and I'm sure some people got fucked with flooding, but the wind never seemed to really pick up a ton. We never lost power, and my dad's going to open his store, if not at the normal time of noon maybe just a little bit later.
-
Keep safe guys
-
Lights have flickered a couple times here in NH and it's hardly even raining and just a little breezy. I'm not feeling very confident in the power grid up here. I expect to be without power for a while after it hits later this afternoon. Hopefully it's not too long. I've stocked up on water and ice, but I only have a few beers left!
-
It's suddenly dry here. The eye passed right over us about 45 minutes ago, and now the rain has stopped and the winds have reduced. Don't see any damage outside, and we only had some leakage around our front window. Never lost power, and I would be quite surprised if we lost it now.

I've lived in NH for 34 years & I'll bet the power goes out. lox, don't you live in Keene? Since it's a larger town you might be in better standing then smaller towns like mine in Raymond.
-
I expected to wake up in the middle of the worst of it, not that it would be over with. No power interruption, and there doesn't seem to be much flooding around Little Ferry, NJ even though we are at quite a low elevation.

I went out for a quick drive with my dad to pick up the newspaper and check on my grandmother's house and took a few photos along the way Here's (https://s575.photobucket.com/albums/ss196/axeman9182/Irene/) the link to the whole album, but I'm posting a couple below. Most of the shots are of a park by my house that usually has a very small, mild mannered brook running through it, but is prone to some flooding

it's a small rectangular park that's well below the surrounding streets. The side of the road we were on is the high ground, this other side of the street wasn't so lucky
-
Wow.
Supposedly, there's a flash flood warning for Albany county, but I haven't really seen anything bad. Just some really bad gusts occasionally and constant rain. It's not even that heavy of a rain. Just constant.
-
Power out here but I fired up the generator and we still have internet and cable. WOOT!!
-
Irene toppled a tree in my lawn. The fucking whore.
-

Pics or it didn't happen!

nothing more than a little rain storm here in the north Bronx. The 1/4 pound Chihuahua statue on our front steps didn't even budge.
-
Other than a few power surges early in the morning, high winds and heavy rain nothing really happened. My house is undamaged, and the power is still on. WOO!
-
Turns out a couple of big trees came down about a block from us. Amazingly, the biggest fell down in the narrow driveway between two houses, barely scratching either of them.
-
Power is back on!!
-
A bunch of trees fell over into the street. One huge tree fell into a parking space that I almost parked in last night, but didn't because a car was there (it's my usual space), so I had to park down the street. That person parking there saved my car.
-
My house didn't get hit bad at all. Lots of heavy rain and wind, but nothing damaging. Cellar only flooded a tiny little bit, should be easy to absorb whatever came in. And didn't lose power!
But I drove about 5-10 minutes down the road to check up on my grandmother, and there are trees down everywhere. So I guess I got lucky.
-
Yo. Powers been out since 7am here, huge trees are down EVERYWHERE. One fell straight arcross our street about 75 ft from the house
-
New York, I welcome you to a British summer.
-
Harry. you know you've been on DTF too long while during the hurricane, I had a beer from Scotland and thought of you. Fantasies I guess.
-
I have fantasies about you all the time.
-
Being crushed while I'm on top. I know.
-
I want nothing more :heart

I'm all yours.

What town are you in? I work in Commack, and I'm trying to figure out if I'll have to go to work tomorrow.

Yeah, I'm in Keene. It basically missed us, so we had power all day. Just a regular rainy day.
-
Power finally came back on here just now.
The damage isn't too bad around here, but it sure is looking messy, and there are trees down all over the place. Went riding around a lot earlier, lots of roads look like this at the moment:
And lots of power lines look like this:
And unfortunately, this is the aftermath of the storm on a friend's house:
Nobody was in that part of the house when it hit, so everyone survived (roar), but the house is completely ruined :(
-
:( thats what it looks like around here too. There was a tree down on a house just like that near my grandmother's home.
Luckily, my house was completely unaffected. My thoughts are with those whose houses weren't so lucky. :-\
-
2 years ago I had a tree go through my house. I know how that feels.
-
made it out with only losing a shutter...lots of trees down but none hit anything here.....lots of people without power but we seem to be lucky and still have ours .....No trains tomorrow so looks like i'll be working from home
-
I'm in south Jersey and I have to say that I was pretty nervous about the storm. On one hand I felt kind of silly for being so nervous but on the other hand I guess it's better to be nervous than unprepared and sorry. The northeast is pretty lucky in terms of weather/natural disasters so when this big of a deal gets made over it I figured that there was at least a chance that shit would 'get real.'
I wound up staying at my parents house just in case. I was definitely worried about flooding, and if our area got flooded, I did not want to be away from my parents.
Luckily my parents had no damage, as well as my friend's house (where I'm living now). A few of my friends wound up with some downed trees (luckily none fell on any houses) and several of my friends wound up with flooded basements. And unfortunately some of my friends live right on a creek...surprisingly enough their house is not flooded but they are predicting more swells tonight due to the full moon and their house may flood yet (but obviously praying that it does not).
-
Fucking no power...
Got it back over night.
-
Anyone know how it impacted the Hartford, CT area?

NAGS HEAD, NC - AUGUST 28: Billy Stinson (L), his wife Sandra Stinson (C) and daughter Erin Stinson comfort each other as they sit on the steps where their cottage once stood August 28, 2011 in Nags Head, North Carolina. The cottage, built in 1903 and destroyed yesterday by Hurricane Irene, was one of the first vacation cottages built on Albemarle Sound in Nags Head. Stinson has owned the home, which is listed in the National Register of Historic Places, since 1963. "We were pretending, just for a moment, that the cottage was still behind us and we were just sitting there watching the sunset," said Erin afterward. (Photo by Scott Olson/Getty Images)

I spent a week in Nags Head a couple years ago and loved it. Sad to hear it was pretty hard hit. The condo I stayed in was right on the water too. Wonder if it's still there.

I heard this morning about all the terrible flooding in Vermont and we haven't heard from my aunt yet :(
-
I live in Vermont and where i live got completely fucked up. A few of my friends houses and cars washed away. Here are some pictures.
This is a picture of some railroad tracks by my house. This part was completely full of rocks and gravel before this, it was much bigger than it looksin the picture.

A car that fell off the road as it collapsed, there was an elderly couple inside that had to be rescued

This is a video of one of the streets that are gone in my town.

Also my road has 4 foot gaps on the sides, so we can't go anywhere. The flooding was insane here. Every road leading to any city is destroyed and are closed off. Power just barely came back on though.
-
Fuck! What town are you in? My aunt is in Randolph...

Those are all around Mount Holly and Ludlow and Rutland. The roads aren't going to be completley repaired for a long time.
-
:-\
-
Ludlow, Mount Holly, and Brattleboro were the hardest hit places in the state. Most other places aren't really that bad, some mild flooding though
-
That absolutely sucks :(
-
My power has been restored!!!!!!
-
Still no power here...
-
Those images from Vermont are downright depressing. I can't even imagine going through something like that. :(

Just looked through them. It makes what happened here seem like a complete joke.
-
How is this for perspective:
A week ago, I had to drop my car off to get the transmission pretty much rebuilt. They said it would be about a week, but hoped to have it finished by Friday. Well, Friday came and they said it would take till Monday. I was aggravated, as I hate not having my car, and was tired of bugging people for rides (although the friends and family who helped out didn't mind). Anyway, first thing this morning, they call and say it was still 50/50 to have it finished today, and they called right as I was watching footage of the devastation Irene had caused, and I thought to myself, "Ya know, when you look at everything those poor people in Vermont (and NC and other places greatly affected by Irene) are going through right now, I don't think me being without my car for another day or two is a big deal." So, I decided not to sweat it, and pretty much counted on not getting my car back today, which I was fine with.
So, naturally, they called around 4 to tell me that my car was finished. It almost seemed unfair.
-
Fantastic! Things just work out sometimes, I guess.
-
I hope you guys are all OK :-\
I heard this morning about all the terrible flooding in Vermont and we haven't heard from my aunt yet :(
Have you heard from her my dear?
-
No.. but she also sucks at returning phone calls in general so I'm sure she's fine but I wish I knew for sure.
-
let's hope for the best.... let us know...
-

Crazy to think that I live about 20 minutes from Brattleboro and we just got a day of rain with a little wind and they had massive flooding. Glad you're doing OK. It's pretty scarey what happened (and is still happening for that matter) over there.
-
Almost any road to any city where i live is closed. I drove through a couple of them and i saw one farm where two acres of land is now a lake. :o

Well, what are you waiting for.........
Get out the fishing gear and get yourself some grub...
J/K its a real shame people have been affected by this storm
-
Saw a news article that aid is being airlifted to Vermont - water/food/etc.
-
Every single town/city in CT lost power somewhere. First time that has ever happened in the states history.

4 days of misery is finally over!
I got lost power 6am on Sunday morning and it was finally restored at 4pm today.
My home suffered no damage, nor did my vehicles.
It was a rough and stressful night Saturday as the wind and rain pounded our house all night long.
When we lost power at 6am I had a sinking feeling in my gut that my basement would now start to flood without the pump working. It had been going on every 10 minutes all night long.
My wife said were screwed, were going to lose the furnace, the washer and dryer, and are upright freezer.
I sat in silence and thought and then after a few minutes I said to my wife, I believe I have a solution to our problem. I said, its not going to be fun and it isn't pretty but if we grab our two 5 gallon buckets and a smaller tupperware bucket we can become manual sump pumps. We pulled the pump out of the hole and started bailing nonstop.
We sprung into action, continuously filling buckets and going up and down the basement stairs, dumping it outside. This went on all day, but at the end of the day, we saved the basement! I felt exhausted be I felt great we had averted disaster.
At the end of the day we lost quite a bit of food, which sucks, but in the grand scheme, it could have been much worse.
Now for my final rant...
I HATE F U C K I N G GENERATORS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I delt will all the discomforts of having no power for 4 days but the worst thing of all by far was that people ran generators 24/7 for 4 fucking days!!! It was insane to try and sleep at night when it sounded like people were all mowing there lawns at the same time...ALL NIGHT LONG!!!
I was becoming nuts! I couldn't sleep.
There really is no reason to run these contraptions all through the over night, but of course these morons have to take full advantage of there new toys and not give a shit about anyone but themselves. In fairness, some shut there's down in the evening but 1 idiot never shut his off for 4 days straight. I wanted to brain him!
Ok, I'm back and I'm thrilled to be out of the dark. :)
-
:tup
It must've sucked to lose power for that long, glad you're finally out of it all well!
Fuckin' generators man.
-
Generators rule.
-
My grandparents had to bucket their basement a few years ago. I couldn't believe it when they told me that. Serious work all day.
As for generators, I would use it all day and all night probably as well. Keep the house cool, keep the food fresh.

The thing is, it was cool. No need for air conditioning. It was 57 degrees at night. As far as keeping food fresh. You can shut down a fridge over night and not lose anything in terms of coldness.
Whatever, it was my personal pet peeve. Its over now and I'm thankful it is.

I read this today on Facebook. A friend of mine posted it the night of the storm. It made me chuckle very much.
"-As Hurricane Irene prepares to batter the East Coast, federal disaster officials warned that Internet outages could force people to interact with other people for the first time in years. Residents brace themselves for the horror of awkward silences and unwanted eye contact.
FEMA advised: “Be prepared. Write down possible topics to talk about in advance. Sports...the weather. Remember, a conversation is basically a series of Facebook updates strung together."

For me tick, I'd have to run it all day for my sump pump. With the amount of water from a hurricane to the water line (I live a mile away from a lake) my basement would flood without power.

I understand that, and I get it. Not something that would bother me at all. I was a sump pump for 12 hours on Sunday! Read my post.
Whats the excuse for people running it 24 hours a day on day 2 or 3 or 4. If its a matter of necessity, like a sump pump (which is not an issue for 4 days), or obviously any medical issue such as oxygen or whatever then run it.
If you just run it 24 hours a day because you can, your not all that considerate of your neighbors cause those mother fuckers are loud.
