I'm surprised these guys don't have a discussion thread considering their moderate popularity here.
Anyway, there seems to be some news. From Wikipedia: "On August 20th 2011, rumors began spreading via the internet that vocalist Daniel Tompkins had left the band, and a video from a concert was later uploaded onto numerous video websites. The video shows the band performing with vocalist Elliot Coleman, formerly of Sky Eats Airplane and currently a guitarist in Of Legends."
Today, the band wrote on Facebook: "Hello guys, we're sorry that people are hurt by our silence. Things are very complicated at the moment, and we've had a lot to deal with. Century Media will make a statement this Tuesday. Perspective is a wonderful thing. Thank you so much for all the support and kind words."
I'll be disappointed if they part ways with Daniel, I really like his voice. Anyone know if Elliot Coleman's any good?
-
Minus the Concealing Fate songs that i've heard a thousand times before, One was a very good album and has some absolute stellar time signatures.
I'll be looking forward to their next album, because they have serious potential.
-
One = masterful
-
I saw these dudes twice open for Devin Townsend. They were pretty badass, but I always thought the vocalist was the weakest link.
-
the amount of ButthurT over this is crazy.
elliot is awesome, he's one of my favorite singers. OMNOM and Zelliack are great. but he's VERY unique, people need to chill and wait to hear better evidence of him in tesseract before talking crap.
these two videos show his range:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lNEkErUR8fw
https://youtu.be/A1yY-BsAXI0
-
I saw them open for Devin Townsend too. I remember liking them apart from their singer. Though it wasn't entirely his fault since there were some very obvious sound problems going on with his setup.
-
I've really enjoyed One, but i am really disappointed that they got a new singer.
Of course i need to hear some new material with him in order to make my judgement, but one of the reasons i really liked Tesseract was the singer and how he made the sound different from other Djent bands.
-
I liked One, but I thought the vocals held it back quite a bit, I never really liked them tbh. I'm glad of the change.
-
Shame, I really started to like the vocals.
At first I was put off. They were too 'metalcore' for my liking. But i've really grown to them.
-
i cant wait to hear elliot in this band
-
It'll be very interesting with Elliot, but I don't think he's the right fit for a permanent replacement.
-
Seeing them with BTBAM, Dillinger, and Animals As Leaders on Oct. 30th, going to be the best concert ever.
-
That's a shame... I thought the vocals on ONE were awesome

Daniel Tompkins' just posted this in a note on Facebook and shared it on the TesseracT Facebook page:
https://www.facebook.com/notes/daniel-tompkins/my-departure-from-tesseract/203483626379765
Firstly I would like to apologise for keeping you all in the dark regarding my departure from TesseracT. Unfortunately it was a necessary silence and the decision when to announce the news was out of my control and more complicated than most people realise. Earlier today however TesseracT and 'Hold Tight! PR' released the news. I made the following statement:
"It is with a heavy heart that I must announce I am leaving TesseracT. This has been the most difficult decision I have had to make in my career as a singer. My priorities in life have changed and as such I can no longer continue with the band. Our friendships are strong and I wish to thank Acle, Mos, Jay and James for all their support and dedication over the past few years. We have achieved great things, travelled the world and met many incredible people and I stand proud to say that I have been a part of the band's success and helped to carve a wonderful album. I will hold onto these memories for the rest of my life. It has been an incredible journey and it is certainly not the end for myself or TesseracT. I look forward to new beginnings and wish my good friends all the very best for the future."
The full article can be read here - https://www.holdtightpr.com/news/article/tesseract-announce-elliot-coleman-as-their-new-vocalist
My relationship with the rest of the guys hasn't changed and we continue to be great friends, which is very important to me and I hope in the future to work with the guys again in some capacity.
Whilst it may be hard for some people to understand, there are many reasons for my departure. Personal circumstances and family life played a large role in the decision making process but it is no secret that I am a busy and ambitious vocalist and it's safe to say that I will be involved in some exciting music in the near future.
I would like to thank everyone for your continued support for both TesseracT and myself. It's been an emotional ride, travelling the world, making new friends, meeting some absolutely incredible people and playing some unbelievable shows that I will remember forever.
Lastly I'm very excited to hear what Elliot does with TesseracT, I honestly couldn't think of anyone better to do the job and I know he and TesseracT will have a successful future.

new demo, haters gonna hate
but i love me some elliot vocals
https://youtu.be/yE0B9W9DFGI
-
Elliot's pretty talented but to me his voice doesn't really fit in with that song too well. The music's cool though.
-
^That. Maybe he'll grow on me, though. I'll have to hear more.
-
I haven't been able to pull things together and buy "One" yet. Because I already bought "Concealing Fate", so I feel like I have their best stuff already.
-
name an album to check out

oh lol

You can get "Concealing Fate" too, which is an EP, but all of the songs are on One too.

The new singer alters their sound, not in a good way, or bad, just...wierd.
One is a solid album. But I can't help but place them at a notch under Karnivool overall.
-
Is it really worth paying full price for one if you already have CF though?
-
Is it really worth paying full price for one if you already have CF though?
This, I have the EP and like it a lot.
-
One has two extremely good songs not on CF. Lament and Eden.
Especially Eden, a real masterful piece of work.

Eden 2.0

once again, haters gonna hate on Elliot, but i love this. i am a little biased because Elliot is one of my favorite singers

I'm not really sure what to think.

Video was weird but Coleman sounded good to me.

-
Man, I can respect Elliot and his abilities, he definitely adds a new flavor, but he just seems out of place in Tesseract.
-
The reason I liked TesseracT on One was because of Daniels harsh but still soaring and atmospheric vocals, and Elliot just doesn't have that.

sucks that elliot will never escape this even though dan was the one that quit
-
Seems like TesseracT is releasing their EP in Germany and Australia today.
Man I wish I was either a kangaroo or someone who makes weird porn right now...
-
Double post, deal with it.
https://tesseractband.co.uk/ (https://tesseractband.co.uk/)
Elliot left the band. I can't say I'm very sad about it though, I did not like what he did with the songs on Perspective. Hopefully their next vocalist will return them to the awesomeness of One.
-
Cool. Hopefully we can hear some more Concealing Fate on the next album. That would be refreshing.

they better get dan back for their sake. whiny bunch of fans they've accumulated

Exciting news from their facebook page:
"New Singer. New Single. New Shows.
“We have found our new singer. He fits our vision for the stage and studio perfectly. Thank you for your patience over the last few months, but as the new single will attest, we feel it was worth the wait.”
The new single, entitled ‘Nocturne’ will be released through Century Media Records on October 12th.
TesseracT will also be performing on the following dates in October:
17th – The Haunt – Brighton, UK
19th – Crauford Arms – Milton Keynes, UK
21st – Euroblast – Live Music Hall – Koln, DE
22nd – Le Batofar – Paris, FR
23rd – Merleyn – Nijmegen, NL"
-
Cool band. One is a good album.
-
"The new singer is...not Dan. Not Elliot. But someone equally as special. But who would you imagine as a perfect fit? I'd say Mercury/Buckley"
commence whining about Dan. i lost all respect for most tesseract fans last time around. cool band, crappy fans
-
Trailer for the new single (and singer).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dx4ucOHgFNM (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dx4ucOHgFNM)
In my opinion it sounds really great. Heavy and groovy and the singer sounds awesome. Even the fan base as a whole seems to love it.
This trailer makes me really excited!
-
Yeah, sounds great.
-
its like a mix between dan and elliot. they can progress and keep the dan's gone butthurt at a minimum
-
its like a mix between dan and elliot.
Yeah, I read somewhere describing him as if Dan and Elliot had a baby, it'd be Ashe.
I have replayed that trailer over and over again. I am so looking forward to this.

new song at 45:00 on this radio show
https://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/player/b01mytq0
-
Nocturne is wonderful, atmospheric and slow just like a TesseracT song should be. The mistake though was to show of the climatic ending in the trailer. It would have been nice to have that as a surprise on the first listen.

Nice! I have slowly found myself listening to them more and more. Some stability within the band would obviously help maybe this will be a very positive move forward for them.

First live video with new singer:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0pks6OFP-RQ (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0pks6OFP-RQ)
I think he's doing a pretty good job, although doesn't seem to be able to muster the power to fully reach some of the notes. Also first thing we hear about how Ashe will handle the hard vocals. It's not as good as Dan, but it's pretty acceptable.
Overall opinion: Still very happy with the new lineup.

A live video of Nocturne, but what interests me is the completely new ~3 minute song used as intro. Sounds great, hope it makes the new album.

An "official" live video of Nocturne. In my opinion a bit poorly edited.

looks fine. james is a boss
-
There is something about this band that frustrates me.
I like the music, but there seems to be some sort of pompous image that surrounds them as a band. It's like they're constantly trying to show the world that they're exceptional musicians. Their music has been done before - by better bands - and the fact that they rehash a lot of their old material is simply frustrating. They take far too long in making new music.
I can't help but look at them in some sort of boy-band/'Trivium' portrayal. And I do like the music, which is a shame. Maybe it's just me.
-
Really? I have been looking everywhere for a band that sounds like this, but I can't find any.
As the for the delay of new music, the band has been going through a lot of trouble this last year that makes it understandable, but I agree it's kinda annoying.
-
This has to be one of the best bands out there right now. Oh my god it's heavy, it's tight, it's groovy and atmospheric. All you want in a band. Now that they're on the right track again (with a new singer) we can start looking forward to some new music.
It sounds really promising.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2c74tmWFWo4
One more thing; all that they do seems so well thought out. It's all in the best interest of the surrounding elements.
-
It's probably offical by now that TesseracT's new album is called "Altered State". The first three song titles has also been revealed:
TesseracT - Altered State
01 - Of Matter
02 - Of Mind
03 - Of Reality
...
Do we have a TesseracT concept album shaping up?
-
yea. i heard it was one song around an hour long. SDOIT style
-
That sounds awesome. Although I feel they've already done that with Concealing Fate. But Concealing Fate is my favorite TesseracT song so still awesome.
-
BIG NEWS!

Two whole minutes of new music which I have to say sounds wonderful!

top comment is so good
"Then go listen to Skyharbor and shut the fuck up..?"
-
Sounds really good! Can't wait to hear what they've come up with as a whole. :tup
-
Pre-orders on the new album is up! The special edition digipack version is looking the most interesting right now.

Starting to feel like the official bringer of TesseracT news to DTF.
-
The trailer sounds pretty good. Looking forward to this.
-
Just ordered the digipack and white tshirt bundle. I wish the Navy blue one was bundled with the digipack instead of the standard cd.
-

Not sure what you mean but there's a bundle with the navy blue tshirts and digipack on the second page.
-
Not too sure about this album. The vocalist sounds super whiny and autotuned in the trailer and I really hope they don't do away with the harsh vocals because i really think that was what made tesseract great on the first album. It's also not as heavy as I thought it would be. So far I'm disappointed.
-
then you probably should pass on this one. harsh vox are gone. they don't like doing it
-
I'm fairly confident that this is going to be THE album of the year. Everything I've heard so far from the new album sounds amazing, and I think they have evolved from "One" in a good way.
-

I agree. This one is one of the "big four" for me this year; Dream Theater, Haken, Periphery and TesseracT.
-
i wasn't sold on elliot, but this new guy (judging from the trailer) is damn talented!
-
Can someone hear what the lyrics are in the trailer? I'm trying to but I can't make out the words. Could someone post what they're hearing it's driving me crazy x)
-
I'm hearing bits and pieces but overall I'm pretty bad at it though.
Just seize the moment
sabotage the lies
Light is on a tie????
We seize the torment
It's weighing on my mind the pressure you were ________
Won't hold????
Just seize the moment
sabotage the lies
Light is on a tie???
Just seize the torment
It's weighing on my mind the pressure you were _________
Last line:
I'll turn your back on everything
-
This is the best I can come up with so far....
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Just seize the moment
Sabotage the lies
Life turns on a dime
Please cease the torment
its weighing on my mind
the pressure you applied won't hold
Just seize the moment
Sabotage the lies
Life turns on a dime
Well just cease the torment
its weighing on my mind
the pressure you applied
Its time to stop the hand of God
???
I'm getting old and growing paralyzed
We're all alone until we let our minds take to the skies
??? we remain alive/aligned?
???
???
I'll turn your back on everything

Another trailer:

-
That is awesome! Loving every second.
I also like the designs in this video, very TesseracTy. Though they proved my artwork prediction wrong. After a white (Concealing Fate EP), a grey (One) and a blue (Perspective EP) tesseract I was kinda hoping for a red tesseract theme this time. That would have been cooler.
-
It's so much awesomeness over this I don't know where to begin. This band just keeps getting better and better.

A live podcast by metalinjection. About halfway in there's an interview with Amos the bassist.
But most interesting is the album version of Nocturne with a very extended instrumental ending, with the single version being 4:17 and the album version about 5:47.
-
^ Noticed now that it's also on YouTube and their official Soundcloud.
-
That sax solo, was saxy. That alone proved its gonna be an amazing album.

+1
This is the album I'm the most excited about this year. It's just a month away now. Waiting eagerly.
-
That clip sounds amazing. Can't wait!
-
Even though I love music in the trailers I'm starting to think they're releasing to much stuff before the release.
-
What are these guys like live? I could see them in a few weeks in Glasgow. Also, any indication how much of their new album they might play, since it won't be released until a couple of weeks after the gig.
EDIT: Just checked out the trailers for the new album and it sounds great :metal
-
Adding to the new material that I already think is too much before the release:

They have released quite a lot of bits and pieces of the whole of the new album. I quit listening to the clips before I got too familiar with them but have loved pretty much everything I've heard. I may or may not listen to the new single they are releasing (not sure if it will release before or just coincide with the release of the album). I think I can wait it out now with at the least knowing I will really, really enjoy Altered State.
I think it speaks to their confidence in this album and I haven't heard anything to give me any indication it won't be a great album. :metal

-
OH. MY. GOD. I feel like a little fangirl. I am so excited and will comence streaming right away..
Thanks for sharing that!
-
BRILLIANT!!! Only one spin from the stream and I'll say with confidence that this will up there among album of the year
contenders. These guys really have something special and I actually like this vocalist a little better.
-
Amazing album. Possibly even better than One. Ashe is a phenomenal singer.
-
Sounds great, but it never really grabs me. Probably a band that will fall into the Between the Buried and Me status of "I like them, but don't really love them."
-
After one listen I really love it. But even though it'll probably be said a million times by most people I'll say it too, it's not as good as One. But I didn't really expect it to be so I'm perfectly fine with that.
There are some excellent moments in here though.
-
Off to see them tonight ;D Well, assuming there are still tickets available on the door!
-
Album of the decade!
-
After some more time with it I can safely say that Proxy, Retrospect, Resist and Exile are the strongest ones here.
Singularity is really good most of the time, there's just that "I see you looking back at me... blabla.. I've found a place that welcomes me" verse I think is pretty boring with just that exact same vocal melody for far too long.
Some stuff in Eclipse isn't really clicking either, but other than that it's a fucking awesome album.
-
Great gig tonight in Glasgow, Ashe sounds amazing live. Couple of crappy pictures from my phone:

Wish the stage was a bit higher in Ivory Blacks though, I'm quite tall, but still couldn't see everything, barely got a glimpse of the 2nd guitarist on the left!
Off the top of my head they played Of Matter from the new album - Proxy, Retrospect and Resist, plus Singularity and Nocturne and some old favourites too (not too good with the names of the older songs I'm afraid, but a couple of times Ashe said things like "sing along, you'll all know this one!")
-
Awesome, wish I could've been there. Never seen them live but I really want to.

-
I know it is only about midway thru the year, but this will definetly be in my top 5 this year. Right now it sits comfortably in 2nd behind Soliwork for album of the year so far.
-
Top 3 for me now... it's so perfect...
-
I still have to give it it's proper due, but was stunned on the first listen through.
-
Nothing's matched Concealing Fate EP for me. This current singer can carry a tune, but he really can drive the song.
So then I turned on Sky Harbor. Yeah, that's what I'm talking about.
-
I just listened to that entire album stream. Fuck me, that's amazing :eek
-
So then I turned on Sky Harbor. Yeah, that's what I'm talking about.
Skyharbor is pretty good, and Dan's vocals there are great. But the music is nowhere near what TesseracT is doing.

What an awesome final boss level music this would be!
-
This new album is awesome. Lots of intricacies exist in the songwriting overall to keep you guessing about what direction its going to take next. The clean vocals are refreshing as well. :metal
-
Awesome to see that there is an instrumental version as well in the digipack.
Gonna have to take a listen and hear some of the subtle things that's going on!
I really love these melodic vocals though and just the whole production. Everything is sounding very crisp clear.

I don't really get why they have a video of an octopus/alien/thing boinking a hot model as the representation of that song? :lol I have to admit I can't understand a single word that's being sung. But the music sounds pretty cool. I guess I'll buy the album.

I never care for music videos these days other than for the music but this I did watch.....2-3 times though. :blush

If you know what the album is about then some of the lyrics starts to make sense (duh). But really, "...Altered State represents the transformations that Tesseract has gone through over the past few years." If this is true, then there is some logic to some of the lyrics but other than that pretty much all of TesseracT's lyrics has always been very confusing to me. I really don't understand 90% of what's sung on Altered State but I still think TesseracT's lyrics are some of the best.
Also, does anyone know what Concealing Fate is about? I have no idea, but I have always felt like "the story" of the song is told backwards... or something.. I mean for one thing it starts with "Acceptance" (which has a strong "end of a song" vibe to it) and ends with "Origin".
-
Altered State is obvious what its about once you understand the concepts they present in the package. Which I really enjoy. It reminds me if Tool had intercourse with Messhugah, this is their time in bed. You've got the atmosphere of Tool mixed with The complexity of Meshuggah, which is beautiful.
Their concepts also are why I hear that. The Altered State of mind within us all.
-
Um, fuck yes...

Dude. Both of those are fucking amazing.
-
Still waiting for them to come anywhere near where I live..
-
I thought I might give Tesseract a chance. Do you recommend One or Altered State as a starting point? Thanks
-
One.
-
Altered State is more original and also almost ambient. but One is more straight forward
-
Just read about this band in the june issue of Prog. I got curious and had to check them. Listening to Altered State now. Not bad!
-
woah. just discovered these dudes about 3 hours ago. Altered State is breathtaking.. one of the best albums I've heard in a very long time.

Yeah, just discovered them too! I wouldn't say it's one of the best albums ever but one of the albums of the year definitely!!
Nocturne has stucked in my head now! :2metal:

what?! let's go... I see they're playing Irving Plaza in the city on Sept 24... are they doing another show in brooklyn?
-
Yup, Sept. 24 they open for Kataonia in NYC, and Oct. 29 they play with Scale the Summit in Brooklyn! I'll probably hit up the brooklyn show.

"Returning to Sphere Studios tomorrow to record and film a live surround sound version of, 'OF MATTER', for a future DVD. Hopefully doing the four different parts of 'Altered State', in four different studios."
Sweeeeet.

Also the video was pretty cool.

Decided to check these guys out because I saw that they're coming my way on the 17th. I was blown away as soon as I started to listen to Proxy. Now I'm pissed that I have to work during the concert.
-
Yep... Altered State is a masterpiece
-
They use saxophone? Why the hell not! :lol
-
Checking out the album, I'm about halfway now, at the sax solo. It actually fits into the song. No desire to put this off anytime soon, it's almost chill out metal. The rythmic design is so incredibly tasteful, groovy the sounds percussive but yet smooth. Atmosphere. These guys are actually really good. I am loving the hell out of those 'soft-djent' parts. There's one now in 'Singularity'.

I agree with the atmospheric part especially with this album being one song pretty much and at first you don't even notice you're actually on the next song and not the same one.

That was one of the few disappointments of this album. Proxy-Retrospect-Resist all flow so beautifully into each other. Then as expected there was a break before Nocturne, and that's fine since it goes into Of Mind there. But then Nocturne doesn't at all connect to Exiled. And then Eclipse doesn't connect to Palingenesis, which in turn connects perfectly with Calabi-Yau. And then Of Energy flows fine too.
It felt a bit unfocused on the first few listens when I hadn't gotten used to the songs. I expected the four different movements to be like four long songs, which would have been awesome.
-
Just bought my ticket for the Brooklyn show in 13 days. Woo!

I actually get what you mean especially with the first few listens to the album and that some songs(especially Nocturne)really sound like standalone songs instead of part of a long song but I think it helps in not making the whole thing just flow with each other or else some of the songs wouldn't stand out as much as they should.
-
Altered State gets better and better with each listen. It's a pretty dynamic mix/master for a metal record, which makes it a joy to turn it up really loud. The heavy stuff sounds larger-than-life and the intricate ambient elements reveal themselves more. This is definitely one of the best polished metal productions I've ever heard. And when I think about it, I'm doubting how fitting the word 'metal' is for this. It's ten-ton heavy and gentle/light at the same time.
-
Saw Tesseract on Wednesday Night and Drank some Hard Cider with them after the show that my Keyboardist bought for them. It was definitely an awesome time.

Been exploring some of Ashe O'Hara's projects before Tesseract. Here's a paino tune that really grabbed me from his band Voices from the Fuselage: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3f1YLfhQnAY

Yeah, sounds great. I keep getting reminded how happy I am with the choice they made with Ashe. Great voice.

Just curious, do they use backing tracks for the backing vocals? Seems to be the norm nowadays to have a laptop on stage that plays the backing track and then also a click track as well.
Good stuff though and can't wait to see them live!

I have been listening to Altered State nonstop the past few weeks. I honestly think this band's lineup is pure magic. They are fuse together to form a metal machine. They are so damn tight. And the yare doing some crazy progressive shit at various spots in the album. It's great to see guys not just making music, but CHALLENGING themselves to make some crazy shit that is still beautiful and melodic. This band needs to be huge.
-
They're gonna be in Austin on 4/6. I've never listened to them at all, sounds like I need to.

Altered State is one of the greatest albums ever made IMO :metal

They have put out 2 stunning albums and if they do it again with the next one I will have to honestly say they are among
my current favorite band. I can spin Altered State over and over again and never get tired of it.

Yeah, TesseracT is probably one of my favorite bands right now. Both albums are amazing, especially One.

I dunno what it was, but Cloudkicker, Intronaut and TesseracT in Austin was the most boring show I've been to in some time.
Cloudkicker was the same chords over and over more or less for 30 mins.
-
Anyone else going to the NYC show on Wednesday?
-
From the band's FB: "Philadelphia, PA. Here's the score. Yesterday, Ashe succumbed to an illness he's been fighting off all tour. We only knew he couldn't perform at about an hour or so before stage time. So, we're letting you know in advance that we may have have to perform instrumentally, tonight. We hope you understand. We will of course keep you updated and hopefully Ashe can perform alongside the rest of us. Thanks, TesseracT."
Darn, I love Ashe's voice. Hope he's better for the NYC show tomorrow.
-
Oh man
I hope he feels better soon but it is really cool to see that the band is still going to play instrumentally.
-
Yeah, I talked to Ashe after the show and he said he was feeling ill. I told him, I'm glad he felt better enough to sing fo us
-
Are they piping in vocals for these instrumental shows, or is it totally instrumental with no vocals at all?
-
Incredible show last night in NYC. The crowd was so into it. I don't go to many concerts where there's moshing, as I'm more of a DT/ Fates Warning/Queensryche type of guy. It was light moshing, but it was cool. Kinda sore today!
-
I'm addicted to tesseract, and i decided to check out what their original singer daniel tompkins is doing. He just posted this video a few days ago. He has a nice voice. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mOh-XlM8ebg

Fantastic song, thanks for sharing. Added to playlist.

In Colour is pretty good stuff. As is Skyharbor

This is so sad. Another vocalist change? This band will never gain any momentum with the constant changes.
From Facebook:
We have amicably parted ways with Ashe as we have found ourselves in different places, creatively. Ashe is a fantastic talent and will continue to be successful in his career and we wish him the absolute best!
Moving forward for TesseracT – Daniel Tompkins will be rejoining us as a full time member of the band. Starting from our main stage performance at Sonisphere, UK on 05.07.14. We are also looking forward to starting writing and recording album three with Daniel, which will begin later this year.
Tesseract creates one of the best, most acclaimed, prog metal albums in recent years and can't keep the lineup together. It's a shame. However, I will admit that Ashe seemed more emo to me, while the other guys were more metal -- but musically, it worked. His voice was so great on that album. Damn, man. Tompkins is great too, but I feel connected to Ashe because I love Altered State so much. Sad day.
But what's different for Tompkins now? He left Tesseract because he wanted to start a family or something, from what I read. Now, it almost gives me the impression that he saw the band's success and is parachuting back in.
-
I hope Tompkins stays, I'd like to see them with him. Sad to see Ashe go.

I'm so tired of this. At least they got back Daniel, but overall Ashe was the perfect voice for tesseract.
-
Just came on to post that :( I love Ashe on Altered State and live - thought he was the perfect fit for the band. :'(
-
Ashe's statement:
It has been a great 2 years, but I think it is better off this way. I can only speak for myself when I say that I haven’t been very happy creatively for just over the past year, and that is not to incriminate anyone with the transgression of making me feel so, but unfortunately things just don’t work out sometimes, and the same can be said in return. I hope for the best and I’m sure the future holds amazing things for us all, I do certainly look forward to the next album! TesseracT is back to the line-up I first came to admire.
Thank you to all the fans for so much support and love, you guys should always be the essence of any band’s passion for making the dream real and that holds true with me.
I have always and will always be working on new material for my solo work and my bro's in Voices From The Fuselage, and I hope that as many of you enjoy what’s to come as much as we all will creating it with my fellow musickers.
There will be support, there will be chastisement, but the former is crucial and the latter is fruitless. I hope that that is something we all believe in. I always welcome interaction with anyone who wishes to do so, but as you can imagine there may be an influx due to today’s announcement, so I apologise in advance for not having responded.
Thanks again everyone.
Daniel's statement:
It's with great pleasure that I announce my return TesseracT after the band amicably parted ways with Ashe, who I wish all the very best to for all his future endeavours.
To be clear to all Skyharbor fans please take note that I will remain the bands frontman and look forward to our second album release later this year which we are very excited about.
The future remains extremely bright for both bands and I look forward to seeing you all on the road
- Dan

Welp. That stinks. I liked Ashe's vocals a whole lot more.

I liked 'em a lot too. That's too bad.

I like Tompkins.

I wonder what's happening with In Colour ?
-
I do like One more than Altered State, but still sad to see another vocalist change. With, like, 3 changes in the last year or two, it's hard to put faith in anyone "permanently" by now.
-
My question is, im wondering one of three things: did ashe leave the band, did the other band members want to go in another direction, or did daniel approach tesseract about wanting to come back? Basically, who initiated the change? They can spin it anyway they want in their statement, but I wonder what really happened.
If ashe left on his own for creative reasons, then why did he take the job a year ago? Didn't he know tesseract's sound?
If tesseract approached daniel, I gotta ask why? You just had a breakthrough that was widely acclaimed. Why tinker with the lineup?
If daniel approached them to come back, why did they take him back? It makes him look like a dude who sees his ex in a good place and wants her back. He left. He left once, and he could leave again. Did they feel like fans were saying their live shows were lacking with ashe, as opposed to daniel? Surely, ashe was a good fit musically, so it couldnt have been his voice.
Its suspicious that the band announced a vocalist departure and addition in the same press release. You would think they'd announce ashe's departure, and then take some time tofind a replacement. But the moves are coming hand in hand. It gives the impression that ashe is being booted, as oppoed to leaving for creative reasons.
-
Well, some bands like to have a replacement before anouncing the departure of a member.
Maybe Ashe wanted to focus on his solo stuff, and he got a lot of attention on that for being in Tesseract.
-
I must say that I hope that things work out for Dan and the band. I've been listening to the stuff he's done since he left the band and he's gotten even better in that time. Just... wow. Incredible singer. :metal
-
Well I still don't own One, but Altered State is a masterpiece and since Ashe was the absolute star on that album, this truly makes me sad
-

Ashe definitely gives a stronger performance on Altered State than Dan did on One, but Dan has been putting out performances of equal or greater quality in his other projects since he left. He does some insane stuff in Skyharbor and White Moth Black Butterfly. I hear the guy apparently practices with his singing constantly and he's definitely shown some drastic improvements since he left TesseracT.

I'm sad about Ashe, but I'm very excited to see what they do with Dan on the next album. Hopefully they can stick together this time.
-
The best thing about Ashe is how well his voice sound with some many layers and armonies, it blends so beautifully. They will lose that with Dan but they will gain more powerfull vocals and Stage prescense.
-
I've always checked out some of dan's recent projects, and i agree he sounds incredible. But his juggling of many projects in many different genres and styles kinda reminds me of Portnoy, and makes me feel like he will latch onto whichever of his projects are hot at the moment. Tesseract deserves someone that is all about Tesseract. I hope my skepticism is wrong and he is all about Tesseract.

Indeed. I'm really interested in seeing how Dan interprets Ashe's songs live. Should sound awesome. :metal

I can see that, but from the sound of things, Dan has been primarily focusing on Skyharbor since he left TesseracT and his own announcement about rejoining the band only focused on those two bands. I think the other stuff are things he just does in his free time.
My only concern with Dan rejoining the band was that he originally left the band because he apparently wanted to start a family and he and the band agreed that it was better for him to leave before they found out whether or not the band would be a problem or not. Since he's been touring with Skyharbor lately, I'm hoping that means that the family stuff is settled and he's able to commit to his band(s).
On the plus side, it sounds he continued to be a big fan of TesseracT when he left and maintained being good friends with the rest of the band.

I watched a number of Tesseract video interviews on YouTube last night from the past year. Some interesting stuff that I noticed. This was the most interesting interview at the 2:00 mark: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9U3ccPsALI8
Apparently, the music was written for Altered Stated by the time Ashe joined the band. "There wasn't much room for the instrumentation to change," said bassist Amos. They said Ashe had free reign over crafting the lyrics and vocals and melodies, which to me is a large element of this album's greatness. In addition, Amos discussed the band's songwriting process. Amos said Acle (the lead guitarist) writes all the material and then the other band members are basically like actors being handed "a script." To me, it seemed like he wasn't particularly thrilled that with format, because he also said he'd prefer to be writing during the downtime on the road as opposed to "picking his nose" and waiting for Acle to bring them music.
Amos and Ashe also seemed eager to start working on the next album in this interview, with Amos even saying they had no idea how the next album would sound because it would be the first time they were all writing material together with Ashe. "We have no blueprint as to how it will sound," Amos said. "It could be a heavier album, or it could be a poppier album." In another interview, I saw Ashe say that he hoped some of his creative ideas would be incorporated and "revered" when the band starts working on new material.
With this in mind, I get the impression that the band members maybe butted heads creatively as they started to work on a new album this summer. I'm sure some people wanted to keep the same songwriting formula, while others wanted to add their own elements to the sound. If this is the case, it's a total crime that they couldn't find a way to make it work. Creative tensions often lead to the best music, in my opinion. Honestly, I'm skeptical whether the Tesseract guys realize the total magic that Ashe's voice, delivery and lyrics added to their music. Without him, there's a good chance they will fade into obscurity. So sad that we'll never know what the band could have achieved beyond Altered State.
-
I'm not sure I agree, I love the stuff that Tompkins has been working on recently (particularly White Moth and In Colour), and so have absolute faith in his vocal and melodic abilities.
As regards the creative tension, it might not be that the disagreement was over whether others should have any input, which it sounded like the band was committed to from that interview you linked to. I would say more likely is that they are incorporating ideas from everyone, but that there was a creative clash between what Ashe wanted and what one or more of the others wanted, and that it couldn't be resolved in a way that satisfied everyone.
This is all speculation anyway.
-

Exactly. And based on what I've seen at various other websites on the Internet, I think there are a lot more fans in general who welcome the return of Dan than those who are disappointed by the loss of Ashe. So I doubt TesseracT will 'fade into obscurity' without him. If that happens, it'll be because the band switching up the lineup yet again.
Am I sad that Ashe is gone? Yeah. I got into TesseracT because of Altered State and I found his performance on the album really refreshing to hear in the prog metal scene. But ever since I went back into the band's earlier material and also checked out the other stuff that Dan's been up to a few days ago, I've been really excited to see where they'll go from here.
The more I listen to Dan and his work, the more I think he is one of the absolute best singers out there today. It's simply magic to listen to. I'm very curious to see where TesseracT will go with this next album. I don't think we'll see the return of the harsh vocals, but I can see the band returning to a somewhat heavier sound. I'd love for them to put out their own Perfect Symmetry of sorts.
-
Tompkins is a tremendous vocalist. My interest in Tesseract basically evaporated when he left, and has been rekindled now that he's back.

Sooo good. :hefdaddy I was a little disappointed to hear that they only played Concealing Fate and April in their set, but apparently Dan only had a couple of hours to get prepared before rehearsals, so I'm guessing they wanted to stick with what they knew he was familiar with. Hopefully we'll get to hear Dan singing some Altered State material in the near future! :metal
-
I was there, and yeah I was slightly disappointed as I much prefer Altered State, but I totally get that Dan won't have had time to learn the stuff. They still sounded great though, and Dan is a great front man!

I discovered that project thanks to this thread, and yes, is amazing. I'm gonna check that new album.

Sounds great!
-
Nothing big, but Tesseract announced they signed with KScope records (Steven Wilson, Katatonia, Anathema).
-
Saw them day before last in Gothenburg, and it was awesome. Dan really impressed me too, really delivering on mostly everything things. The one thing I felt was a bit off was the highest vocal parts of Nocturne, but I understand that those melodies are tailored to Ashe's voice, which was a bit lighter than Dan's.
-
Dan's other band, Skyharbor, just released a new music video! I think it's made by the same person who did the video for Steven Wilson's The Raven that Refused to Sing! :o

Yeah, Jess Cope. Definitely the same person. She's sure been busy the past year or two. Her videos are really awesome.
-
Really good song, and great video.
-
Just saw on their Facebook page that they've had to cancel their gig tonight in Glasgow because their tour bus has broken down and they weren't able to get to Scotland. I'd decided not to go along this time anyway, as it seems they're playing the same set as they did the last time I saw them 18 months ago, but obviously it sucks for everyone who was planning to go - especially those who've travelled.
Amos looks hilarious in the picture they put up though :lol

I watched some recent live videos last night of Daniel performing the Altered State material with Tesseract. I notice that he goes to falsetto in a few of the more powerful parts that Ashe would belt out full force. I didn't really care for that at all, but other than that he sounded really good. Just a little weary of the falsetto. He's definitely miles ahead of Ashe in terms of stage presence though, in my opinion.
-
Yeah, the Altered State vocals were definetely modeled after Ashe's quite honestly 'girlier' voice. I can't wait to see some more of Dan's stuff on the next album, which I was always more a fan of in the first place.
-
The YouTube updates for the upcoming Voices From the Fuselage album sound pretty Killer. That's the band of singer Ashe O'Hara now that he's out of Tesseract. The good thing is that its prog metal. I love his voice over prog metal and I was worried that would be over when he left Tesseract. Luckily, that's not the case. This sounds very promising: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0FeXKbzf7ac
Also, new live album/dvd coming out this spring for Tesseract and a new album slated for September, according to this month's Prog magazine.
-
^ I checked out their EP 'To Hope'. Cool stuff. Nothing overly exciting really, but still interesting.

Ex-Tesseract vocalist Ashe O'Hara appears as a guest vocalist on a video from Dzyen. See link below. It's still early to tell, but I think he might be my new favorite vocalist. Love his voice. Gotta see how he sounds on the upcoming release of Voices From the Fuselage, which is now his main band.

-
Yeah Ashe is great. Though this particular song is not my favorite. It's okay, nothing more. His vocals definetely makes it better.
-
I'm new to this band, and I've been listening to Altered State recently. It's good, but not fantastic, in my opinion. I like the sound they have and some of the songs in the first half are quite good, but everything after Exile just feels subpar.
-
I used to feel that way after "Exile" too. I think that's bound to happen though, because that song is just absolutely phenomenal. I started to better appreciate the album's second half when I listened to them on their own -- without listening to the album's first half.

I seem to like Altered State as a whole more than you, but I totally agree about where the album's strength lies. It's clearly during the first half. Proxy, Retrospect, Resist and Exile are all great, and after that it's 'only' good. Though I really do like Eclipse as well.

Awesome performance. Though it's a bit too rapidly edited and filmed, I can never really focus on anything properly.
-
^ Thats my main issue. Not sure how I feel about this style of editing for a whole DVD.
-
Awesome performance. Though it's a bit too rapidly edited and filmed, I can never really focus on anything properly.
Totally agree. It was giving me a headache when i watched it. I couldn't comfortably enjoy the performance because the editing was so jumpy. Hope the rest of the DVD isn't edited that way.
-
Yeah I'm not sure about the editing either. Though I was more concerned with the mix. Acle didn't mix it apparently, maybe that's something to do with it.

Jam session between Tesseract's drummer Jay Postones and UK artist Martin Grech: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=h7a84cbELck
Just curious if anyone here is into Grech or familiar with his music? I checked him out last night after reading about him in Prog magazine. His music is amazing -- very Chroma Key and Peter Gabriel-esque. But somehow he only has a few hundred followers on Facebook.

I was a big fan of his first album when it came out. Second album wasn't as strong, and third one was really quite different, very mellow. Interesting stuff though.

Did you listen to the album yet? It's very impressive stuff. I received my physical copy in the mail yesterday, and I thought it was weird there's not text on the digipak's spine and the band member names aren't even listed in the notes. But the music itself is great. I'm still in the process of digesting it.
-
Yeah, I bought the digital download on the release day. It's a fucking beast man, so damn good. I really think they bring out the true best in Ashe's vocals, so much more than TesseracT did. Great album all around.
-
I listened to it a few times too and it's really great! I hope these guys get more recognition. :tup
-
I'm still listening and digesting -- some of these songs are big-time growers. But damn, it feels so good to have another album with Ashe's voice on it to listen to aside from Altered State. His voice is just so pleasant and touching. I really think he has a bright future ahead of him. He's a great lyricist too.
So happy that he and Daniel are both in great bands. They're both such talented singers.

Pleasantly surprised to come across this on Youtube: The full Scala show on Century Media's official page (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UV8gpcchzkw)
Enjoyed it much more than I thought I would from the clips they released beforehand. :metal

I gotta say, "Meterorites" is my favorite song from Ashe's career so far. That song is so incredible. It reminds me of "Exiled."
What do you guys think of the production? At first I thought the vocals were a tad too low in the mix, but now maybe not.
-
My first impression was actually that the vocals were very loud in the mix.

The first thing that I realized is that they used "Toontrack Ezdrummer Metal Machine" for the drums.
So the drums are either programmed or played on an electronic kit with Toontrack samples.
Nothing wrong with any of that... I own the software so I just immediately noticed it
I like the production a lot. Depending on the mood of the song, Ashe is either upfront or a little low in the mix.
Like you mentioned earlier, it's great to have another album with Ashe... This one should get many repeated listens.

Suuuper excited! Although it's a rather short album, their shortest yet. But still, bring it on, can't wait to hear Dan back in TesseracT!

I wasn't sure what to think at first but I'm on my 6th or 7th listen now and it gets better each time.
Really looking forward to the album!
Edit: Just like Altered State, the production is excellent.

I wasn't sure what to think at first but I'm on my 6th or 7th listen now and it gets better each time.
Exactly this for me too. Once I wrapped my head around the melodies it got a lot better. Some pretty interesting stuff. And I love hearing Dan in TesseracT again, he is fantastic as always.

I'm loving this song. Sounds fantastic!

Solid song. Vocal harmonies in the first half didn't interest me all that much but the second half of the song was terrific!

Great song. Very excited for the new album.

Yeah, having heard what the song builds up to, the first half is fine, and it works well to start with a tense and unusual beginning and ramping up to the glorious stuff at the end. Definitely more Altered State than One.
-
The song didn't grab me initially, but it's growing on me. I really like it now a lot. I feel like it could fit better in the context of an album though. The production is amazing, as others have said. I noticed a bunch of people who don't like various aspects of the song on YouTube -- particularly the vocal filter. The track also skips at the 2:57 mark, and Acle chimed in on the comments and said it was an error by the guy who created the video. It shouldn't appear on the album. This remains my most-anticpated album of 2015!
-

Yeah I'm not too keen on that myself. Will probably get used to it though I suppose. Not sure what to make of the song as a whole yet though, only heard it a few times so far and I normally need plenty of listens before I really get a song.
-

-
LIstening now, fucking sick :metal :metal :metal
Yup. The music video is well-directed too, I think. Dan sounds awesome. :metal
-
Cool track, but not loving it. The grooves are cool, and the vocals are nice, but something about it just feels... I don't know.. pop-ish? Mostly the chorus. Still good though, but Messenger was better. Maybe repeated listens will make it better, like with Messenger.
-
The two singles from Polaris haven't blown me away, unfortunately. I'm willing to give them time though. So far, I'm enjoying all the songs on the Voices From the Fuselage album more than this Polaris material, but time will tell. Tesseract is a talented band, and I'm eager to hear the album start to finish.
-
Survival is really good. I like it a bit better than Messenger.

I'm listening to VftF right now... great stuff! I've also been listening to Skyharbor's new song, Out of Time, with their new singer Eric Emery. That's a killer song right there. Very Deftones/Karnivool-ish.
It'll be interesting to see how Voices from the Fuselage and Skyharbor are both affected from their connections to TesseracT overtime. All three bands are pretty fantastic.
-
The opening and closing tracks on VFtF's album are really good, as well as Meteorites, but the rest doesn't really interest me. And what I noticed on my first listen is that some of Ashe's high noted are a bit weakly delivered compared to what he did on Altered State.
-

I immediately LOVED the new Skyharbor song. The previous albums are great but they took some time getting used to the melodies and stuff.

-
Oh, mama! Let the listening begin!
-
Tourniquet is especially wonderful so far.
-
After a first listen, one thing is clear. This will be a difficult album to digest, but once I get more aquainted with the songs I think I'll love it. Tourniquet, Cages, and Seven Names are favorites at the moment, especially Tourniquet.
-
I agree! I can't really offer a thought yet until I spin it a bunch more times. On my first listen I really liked the two songs that Acle said on FB he most liked: "Hexes" and "Cages." The production is spot on too.
-
As someone who became a fan through Altered State, I just don't like the new/old singer's voice. Ashe's vocal lines are what made the band for me and I can't find such addicting vocals on the new album so far. Still only halfway through though.
-
I've always liked Dan more. In fact, he is my favorite vocalist, like, ever. Not only for how he sounds, but for the melodies and he lyrics he writes.
Ashe is great too, and I was very relieved when they announced that he had joined, but having Dan back is just so great.
-
gave this a listen. I kind of expected this but I'm not really feeling it. It probably has more to do with me not being too into djenty stuff these days, but also because TesseracT albums are huge growers (or at least Altered State was) but this seems to not even really have any hooks. I'll probably get it at some point though.
-
I agree about there not being any apparent hooks straight away. I noticed that on the two singles as well. Like you said, TesseracT albums are mainly "growers". The up-side to that is that once it all sinks in it's amazing.
Tourniquet is already one of my favorite TesseracT tracks ever, and I think is among Dan's best work yet. I feel that it ended a bit unexpectedly though, so I've already made a 8:13 edit that I thinks works better.
-
I'm currently in the honeymoon phase but man this is a GREAT album second listen in.
Not sure if anything off of it beats tracks like Resist, Exile and Singularity from Altered State though.
Time will tell, but so far it's the album of the year for me :tup
Excellent production as well.
-
It's definitely a very consistent album and all tracks are great.
Early Rankings:
Seven Names
Utopia
Tourniquet
Hexes
Cages
Dystopia
Survival
Messenger
Phoenix
-
Super hard to rank this early, and it will most likely have changed within a few days, but this how I think I'd put them:
01 - Tourniquet
02 - Seven Names
03 - Hexes
04 - Cages
05 - Dystopia
06 - Messenger
07 - Survival
08 - Utopia
09 - Phoenix
Phoenix is a good Linkin Park song, but for TesseracT it's not quite as good as I'd expect. Utopia might move up once I've heard it more.
-
This album is growing on me fast and big time! Also, VIP tickets for the upcoming North American tour are just $50. That includes a meet and greet. Not a bad deal.

Glad I wasn't the only one that thought of Linkin Park during Phoenix.
There were a few other sections that had a Linkin Park vibe as well especially in Dan's vocals and some of the chord progressions.
-
This album. :hefdaddy
-
I love when they go all Rage Against the Machine at the end of Utopia :metal :metal
-
It's definitely an adjustment for me listening to Dan's vocals, as Altered State is my most-listened-to album of the past two years and Ashe's voice and lyrics over Tesseract's sound is ingrained in my brain. But with each listen I find myself growing to like the new album more. These guys can sure write some terrific music and have the potential to be one of the genre's next great bands for years to come.
-
Dystopia is probably the track that improves the most with multiple listens. The first time I didn't quite get the melodies and everything that was going on, but now I think it's awesome.
-
As someone who became a fan through Altered State, I just don't like the new/old singer's voice. Ashe's vocal lines are what made the band for me and I can't find such addicting vocals on the new album so far. Still only halfway through though.
Agreed completely. I don't like the vocals as much, and I like the vocal melodies even less. As far as the album as a whole, I'm not immediately grabbed like I was with Altered State. Not even close.
-
I think I prefer Dan's voice to Ashe's, but I do agree that the vocal lines on Altered State are just mindblowingly good.
I'm loving Polaris so far, but yeah I don't think the vocal melodies are as consistently great as on AS, though there are still plenty of fantastic moments and it's still strides ahead of One in that regard.
-
I disagree, I find Dan's melodies far more interesting and daring. Like I said, I think Ashe did a great job, but his melodies are not as interesting and some of them, along with a few phrasing things, are the cause of my least favorite moments on Altered State. In fact, the only two moments in TesseracT's discography I actually don't like are because of Ashe's melodies.
-
I've gotta say the album is starting to grow on me.
Hexes's chorus beats out even the "Burning bridges as I cower beneath" part off Retrospect that is my favourite moment on Altered State. The Linkin Park rap in the middle of the song is pretty weird though.
Don't get the hate for Phoenix. It's a pretty cool track and I like it way more than Survival and Messenger.
-
Just stumbled across this video on YouTube from a couple months ago of Ashe singing Rhiana's "American Oxygen" somewhere at 2015 UK Tech Fest. It's a crime to see such a wonderful singer performing to such a small crowd! I hope he gets the audience he deserves one day, whatever the genre.
Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5GwJIU8PdZI
-
I quite like the vocal melodies on both Polaris and Altered State, but I will say that I think that the big difference is that Dan went in a more bare-basic vocal approach. There's harmonies and stuff, yeah, but Ashe did all sorts of stuff vocally on Altered State and he struggled big time in recreating that in a live setting. Dan will have it much easier in recreating his melodies on Polaris live, I think.
-
I think they were more ambitious with song writing on Altered State. Polaris feels a bit samey in comparison in that regard. I am a big fan of both vocalists and love Dan's work here but the song writing (the music specifically) feels disjointed several times and sort of takes my focus from some of the great stuff he's doing vocally. Having said that....
Its quite a really, really good release overall. :tup
My current song rankings:
Hexes
Dystopia
Survival
Utopia
Tourniquet
Cages
Seven Names
Phoenix
Messenger
-
Only listened once so far, but I quite enjoyed what I heard - which is a bit unusual for me, since I'm usually 'meh' about most albums until I have a good few listens to digest. Hexes was an immediate standout for me.
As for the vocals, I'm firmly in the Ashe camp. I've nothing against Dan and he's obviously a great singer, but the vocals on Altered State are just so good, that I'll always have a 'what if' feeling with the band in regards to the singing.
-
Listening to the official YT stream right now.... Just add another album to the "holy crap" list.
2015 is going to shape up to be one of the greatest years for music in my lifetime!! I'm almost worn out from all the awesome sauce!! I can't process all of it!!
-
Listening to this album again today. Just WOW. This is like some kinda prog-funk hybrid. I just freakin LOVE this album!!
-
I listened to it too. I thought it was pretty killer.
Need to listen again, obviously, but a lot of music on my plate right now.
-
I've given this album a week or so now, and I can firmly say this is my favourite tesseract album. I love Dan's performance so much. Hexes, Tourniquet, Survival, and Seven Names are my favourites so far, but this album has so many killer songs that its hard to choose a bad song. If I had to I'd say Messenger is the weakest in my opinion.
Side note, they asked me to go shoot their show in Calgary this November! I'm stoked as hell! I get to shoot for them, the contortionist, and Dan's old band Skyharbor! :metal
-
My first episode of The Jammin Dude Show in almost a year, and my first new episode is dedicated to this amazing album!!
Anyone going to be at the Seattle show with The Contortionist??
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YyoYGcYOMYY
-
I listened to the Concealing Fate EP back when it came out and that was the first time I had ever heard of this band. I didn't like it and never gave the band a second chance. Last week, a friend to.d me to listen to this new album so I did, not really exoecting a lot, since my first experience with them wasn't that noteoworthy. My reaction to this album was different than I could have expected. Holy shit, this stuff is so good!!
-
I can safely say that Polaris has become my favourite Tesseract album. Hexes, Tourniquet, Utopia, Messenger and Cages are simply too mindblowing.
-
So I watched Odyssey/Scala on YouTube today, and DAMN. I don't know what it is, but I finally figured out which vocalist I prefer for sure. Dan kills the Altered State stuff so well and it totally reminded me of how much I love the One album. Top that off with Polaris, my fanboyism for Dan is at max levels right now.
-
I'm really surprised people like Solaris so much. I've had it spinning in my car non-stop since it was released, and while it has definitely grown on me, I still don't think it's anywhere near Altered State. Don't get me wrong, I think it's an awesome album.
-
Polaris is my first TesseracT experience, and I'm loving it, I've heard snippets of Altered State, so I can't really judge it yet, but from what I've heard I like the sound of Polaris better.
-
Polaris is consistently good, while I don't enjoy the second half of Altered State that much (less sax pls).

While I do think the sax on Altered State is amazing, I also agree with jakepriest. The second half of Altered State does not match the quality of the first half. It also features two moments I actually dislike, which is very rare when it comes to TesseracT.
Polaris is clearly the better of the two for me, but One is still their best.
-
While I love Ashe's melodies, the "No, don't. Give me your hand, I can save you from the fall. Go, I'm in your shadow. Run until your feet are aching to the bone." is my least favourite part of Tesseract's discography and it's one of the main reasons the second half of Altered State suffers. The rest of the song is stellar, but this moment is so bad it drags it down a lot unfortunately, alteast compared to the awesomeness Of Matter and Of Mind is.
-
Hmm, what don't you like about it? I think it kicks off the song really well, though granted the rest of the song is even better and one of my favourite things on the album.
-
I find the vocals incredibly annoying for some reason. It's the only Ashe vocal melody I outright dislike.
-
I don't mind that section. But Singularity does hold one of the two things I dislike, which is the entire "I see you looking back at me" verse that comes right after what you're talking about. It's fine to have repetitive vocals music, but the fact the riff behind also stays the same just makes the entire section really boring and they drag it out for way too long. And then they repeat the entire thing at the end. I don't quite get what they were thinking there. It's a shame really, because the entire middle part of the track is really cool, but because of those repetitive verses I barely ever listen to Singularity anymore.
-
I actually like the "I see you looking back at me" verse. I don't even find it that long. But it's really jarring when it comes back at the end, especially with the transition to Embers.
Calabi-Yau remains the weakest track by far on Altered State imo if I had to rank them, and why the hell not:
1. Of Mind - Nocturne
2. Of Matter - Retrospect
3. Of Matter - Proxy
4. Of Mind - Exile
5. Of Matter - Resist
6. Of Reality - Palingenesis
7. Of Energy - Embers
8. Of Energy - Singularity
9. Of Reality - Eclipse
10. Of Reality - Calabi-Yau
The "rap" section in Palingenesis (1:13 - 1:38) is a part I've grown to love a lot lately, especially the ambient clean guitar work underneath the vocals is stellar.
-
01 - Exiled
02 - Retrospect
03 - Eclipse
04 - Proxy
05 - Singularity
06 - Nocturne
07 - Resist
08 - Palingenesis
09 - Embers
10 - Calabi-Yau
The "rap" section in Palingenesis (1:13 - 1:38) is a part I've grown to love a lot lately, especially the ambient clean guitar work underneath the vocals is stellar.
That part is really cool, but the "chorus" that comes after is the one other thing in their discography I dislike. Again, too repetitive, and how he says "deserve" (or, DEserve) is just bad and makes me cringe every time.
-

Wow, that's probably my single favourite section that Tesseract have done. :lol It's so insanely groovy.
Tastes, huh?
-
Yeah, it's not even just different, in this case it's completely opposite :lol
-
Exactly. :tup
-
Wow, yeah this really shows how we all have different tastes because I really like everything about Singularity.
I love Altered State but I do agree that the first half of the album is a lot stronger.
-
Maybe a TesseracT survivor soon, now that Polaris has been out for a while?
-
Maybe a TesseracT survivor soon, now that Polaris has been out for a while?
I'd totally be up for that. :metal It'll give me a reason to listen to One either way.
-
If there were some people who would take part, I could run the survivor once I finish with the Periphery one if there's nobody else to organize it.
-
it'd be really hard for me to participate in a tesseract survivor, I don't listen to One much, I always listen to Altered State as an album and not separate songs, and I don't have Polaris yet :lol (probably will get it in my end of the year haul, so)
-
Altered State still ranks above Polaris for me. And is my top album by Tesseract overall. People gave a lot of hype for the Concealing Fate EP and then One. I gave CF a number of listens, I really wanted to like it, but it didn't jive with me totally. I think it was Dan's vocals. Then Altered State came out, and that immediately clicked. It's so good. I was kind of disappointed Ashe left so soon. I thought I'd only ever dig one Tesseract album. However, Dan's vocal style on Polaris is much more enjoyable for me. It might take a few more listens to entirely gel with me. It is a really good album. But Altered State ranks above all else for now.
-
Ok, finally gave Polaris a few spins to get ready for their show next week's show. Hell of an album, Tourniquet and Phoenix are my early front runners. Show should be fucking epic with Skyharbor, Erra, and The Contortionist, and so glad to finally be catching tesseract after missing thelast few tours.

I'm photographing their show on Saturday in Calgary! I'm WAAAAY to stoked to get a front row seat to this line up. Erra was great with Scale the Summit and Glass Cloud last summer. Skyharbor has me almost excited as Tesseract too. Ahh man I'm so excited!
-
Right? Just a beastly fucking lineup. Erra is a bit new to me, but after spinning them they seem sure to melt my face. Missed TesseracT the last time around only because Tool played on the same night. (Tool was on my bucket list, couldn't possibly miss them)

I was bored to freakin tears when I saw TesseracT in Austin when they came around for Altered State. Like 5 bands before they went on that all sucked and TesseracT looked bored out of their minds up there once they came on.
-
Hey guys! So here's some photos of TesseracT's show the other day. The highlight of my career so far! I had to pinch myself during their set! Lol

Thanks man! I'm really proud of these photos! :D
And here I thought my pre-show boner couldn't get any harder.... C'mon Friday!!!!
Haha glad I could add to the excitement man! TesseracT slays live. They're so friggin tight and Dan is an insane frontman! Skyharbor is really quite good live too! The Contortionist blew my mind with some of their technical skill. It was nuts! ERRA are crazy good too! Probably the most different out of the 4, but great musicians in their own right! You'll have fun dude!
-
I was cranking Erra while cooking today, those guys just rip shit up man, so intense. Definitaly pumped for the show.
-
Yeah dude! Great guys too. they usually hang around the merch area after their set too if you want to chat with them for a bit.
-
Nice, maybe I'll buy their disc there and get it scribed by the gang to add to my collection, definitely gonna score some shirts to add. Love obscure band shirts (my best being a local band called the Quart of Blood Technique :) )
It helps that the show is the first day of a nine day vacation for me as well.
-
I just got back from sound check and talking a little bit with James from Tesseract. I couldn't stay for the whole show, I have to get up at 5 AM for work. But the whole band signed my CD, and I picked up a T-shirt and a hoodie. And James sat down and answer five questions for jammin dudes neighborhood.

Sweet dude! If they're not all around then just ask one of the boys to round up the rest of the band and they'll come sign it! I'm actually wearing one of my ERRA shirts right now! They had my favourite merch designs at the show! The Contortionist had some really cool stuff too!

Thats sick dude! James is really down to earth, as are all of the dudes!
-
Holy. Fucking. Shit.
Tesseract just killed it, I'm totally drained. Of Matter was just perfect.
Other bands were solid as fuck too, with Erra as my favorite. Skyharbor was a great starter, and Contortionist were good, though the vocalist was tripping me out, not sure if he was fucked up or just acting, but it was fucking weird. Great four hours ofmusic overall tthough.
My view of the show...

Nice dude! Glad you had a good time. They're friggen great live!
I'm glad you dig ERRA too! I'll pass that on to the guys for ya. :coolio
As for the contortionist's singer - I asked Jordan, their bassist, and he said that's just part of his act. It fucking weirded me out though too! But it kinda added to the ambience of the performance for me once I figured it out after the fact.
-
I'll still have to wait until next summer to see TesseracT :'(
Hope it's worth the wait!

Good to hear. I was impressed with the San Fran audience, usually they are a mellow lot, but they really brought their A game for last night, even had a healthy pit going for all the bands except Skyharbor. (fortunately it was behind me hahaha)
Also, here's a brief video clip, had I known the sound would come through this well up front, I would have shot more. Was also worried about having my phone kocked out of my hand...

Nice dude! Good to hear the crowd was in it! Sounds like they were having all sorts of technical difficulties but they didn't care because the crowd was killer!
-
Has anyone here gotta a VIP ticket for any of the shows to check out Tesseract's soundcheck and a meet and greet? I'm curious how many fans are at the meet and greets.
-
Heres hoping I can go to the show tonight.
-
I ended up making it and what a show it was.
Skyharbor played sans vocalist. When I went to go smoke a ciggy, I overheard one of the guitarists say to another person the vocalist was sick and barely made it in Denver. So I guess we got a special instrumental set from them. He also said this is the smallest venue they've played so far on this tour.
Erra was pretty good as well, didnt really see them much.
The Contortionist was badass as always. They had Vocal mic issues for the first two songs, which sucked but have still growled loud.
Tesseract, Awesome set and Daniel did a nice job on Ashes parts. They were surprised at our energy from the start, and how loud we are for a small venue.
-
What's the merch for Tesseract? Catching them tomorrow in Austin :metal
Does the band hang around after the show or did you stalk them to get your cd signed? Polaris has been kicking my ass lately.

I didn't hang around in Calgary because I was on the guest list and hung out with them Pre Show, but anyway I saw peoples pictures on social media from them hanging around outside the venue after the gig. But Couldn't say for sure.
As for merch they had a couple t shirts - a white and coloured album shirt - then a black and white polaris album shirt, they had a black hoody, a snapback hat, and then a flag.

In Calgary there was only 5 or 6, if that so you'd get a decent amount of time with the band if the same is for wherever you'll see them. but who knows what the turn out will be like from place to place.

for those that have been to the shows, what is the band order?

Thanks YtseCullen for the info.
I'm cranking up Polaris here at work big time. It gets better and better with every spin. Keep putting Survival on repeat for a few times. Kick ass song.

No problem dude! and yeah man! I can not over play this album no matter how many times I spin it. So good!
-
Watching them live as we speak.... :metal
Tompkins sounds amazing. Great front man
-
Wow. I am speechless with Tesseract. Probably in my top 3 shows of all time. The band gave it all and the crowd was energized. Dan's voice is pure gold. He dis not miss a note and his voice did not break at all.
-
Polaris is kicking my ass in the best way possible. I'm not sure what the rest of their discography is like as I just got into them recently with this album, though I do remembering hearing a song from Altered State a while back but I couldn't tell ya which one and don't even know if I'd remember it when I inevitably check it out. But I'm excited to dive into a new band. I've spun the album a good handful of times and still want more, definitely one of the better albums of this year. Great balance to the rest of the music I've been listening to lately which has mainly been roror-based music with a hint of clean vocals so it's nice to get the opposite end of that with equally awesome instrumentals. Hell of a voice to boot.
Stemming off that...I gotta ask, what in the hell is with the revolving door of vocalists? :lol One comes in for an album, leaves, another joins, leaves, another joins, previous one rejoins... WWWWWUT? Kind of makes it a little intimidating to get into a band like that... I read brief Wiki articles but they didn't have much info on the why's of it all so I'm wondering if anyone here knows.
-
I think Dan left because he didn't feel that he could live the "band life" because he wanted to start a family and have time for that. I don't know why Elliot Coleman left though, but it was probably for the best since almost no Tesseract fan liked him. Ashe left for the usual "creative differences" thing. What that actually means I don't know.
It has definetely been a frustrating thing to experience, but at least we're back at Dan now who was and is my favorite of all their vocalists. So that's a good thing that has come out of it, and hopelly he'll stick around for good now.
-
So since a few people in the survivor section showed interest in a survivor, I figured I'd ask here if so there would be enough participants.
Would anyone be up and partake in a TesseracT survivor? I'd run it pretty similarly to the Periphery survivor. :tup
-
Sure, I'll participate.
-
Me too.
-
today while looking through my CD collection I discovered that I actually did have a physical copy of TesseracT's first album and I didn't think I had one :lol
also i'd do a TesseracT survivor for the first two albums but I also don't remember most of the songs by name except Eden and Calabi-Yau, sooo...
-
Just keep Calabi-Yau alive until the Altered State top 3 and I'll allow you to join.
-
just do Altered State as four songs instead of 10 :neverusethis:
-
Of Reality :metal :metal
-
So we might get around 6-8 participants. That was the average for the Periphery survivor and it worked out so I guess it should be enough to get through TesseracT.
Just keep Calabi-Yau alive until the Altered State top 3 and I'll allow you to join.
That would be my first vote on Altered State actually :neverusethis:
-
:footloose:
-
I'll be in for a survivor too.
-
Very well then, I'll try to get the survivor up and running somewhere around the 8th of February. I'll probably create the main thread a bit before that to sort out some issues and discuss a few things.
-
Exciting things ahead!

So stoked to see if they do some reworkings of their Ashe stuff with Dan! No matter what it is though I'm stoked to see what this "summer release" brings! :metal
-
Just listened to Polaris again the other day as a brief respite from The Astonishing.
Still rocks my face. :metal
-
My opinion on Dan has really turned around. Have you guys seen these isolated vocal tracks from Polaris? Dude is incredible.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ztqQwnyj59g
-
Yeah, he's awesome. Those videos were really cool.
-
Saw these guys live in Gothenburg last night. Awesome show.
The Contortionist were good too, but I'm not really a big fan of theirs.
-

Yeah, at first I didn't like Dan at all but now I love him more than Ashe! Dan is really doing great things on Polaris. Interesting though that his voice was not so impressive at first but I have grown to love his vocals.
-
Please, someone help us out with the TesseracT survivor. We've progressed from 9 voters to 4 and it's really not going to be possible to finish it at this point.
-
So the Errai EP is out, anyone had a chance to listen yet?
Personally I don't really feel that any of the reimagined songs were improvements on the already existing versions. They're quite nice, but the Polaris versions are better.
The best thing to come out of this though is the personal edits I made on Tourniquet and Cages using the Errai material. I wove the different Tourniquet versions into each other to make an almost 9 minute song that progresses and builds quite nicely. And I've always thought that the second half of Cages really isn't as good as the first, but on Errai that section was a major improvement. So I just put the second half of the Errai version of Cages and the first hald of the Polaris version together to make what is in my opinion a better song.
-
I've always thought that the second half of Cages really isn't as good as the first
wow
just
wow
-
It's still good, just not as cool as the feel of the first half. The Errai version improves on it with some nice chords in the background to make it feel like it progresses better.
-
So after one listen, here are my thought on Errai:
Survival - a worse version of a song I already consider pretty bad, did not enjoy at all
Cages - didn't really add anything new to the song, the final riff which is the best part of the song is gone, prefer the original by miles
Tourniquet - it was alright I guess, still not an improvement whatsoever
Seven Names - probably the best remake out of the four songs, I actually enjoyed this one
Overall I don't see any point in the release. And I surely won't put it on again anytime soon if ever.
-
That's pretty much where I stand as well. Except I don't think Survival is bad.
-
I havent listened to Errai yet but Survival is fucking amazing, take it back

Not Phoenix bad.
But bad.

Show Tonight....
Fuck yeah....
-
Saw these guys in Chicago last night and they blew my mind! It was my first experience from them. Got home from the show and immediately ordered One, which I'm told is their best album. So cheers to this band!
-
One, which I'm told is their best album.
It doesn't get better than Altered State, for me. One of the best progressive metal albums of all-time.
-

+1 although a different singer sings in Altered State. Polaris is awesome as well. Kicked my ass for many weeks in my iPod.
-
One is still my favorite. The other albums are great, but there's something special about One.
-
One and Altered State have equal standings probably somewhere in my top 10 albums of all time. There isn't a single song I can say is weak on either of them.
Polaris on the other hand... I liked it a lot at first, then it got kinda boring over time.

These are generally pretty good but...omg... I was well entranced by the performance when about half way through I noticed my cat looking at me like WTF dude?!, at which point I lost it completely... :lol :rollin
-

This.
Ashe was not very good live. But i much prefer the character of his voice to dan's. Dan is fine, but there is a richness to ashe's voice he doesnt have.
I found polaris to be "ok." Not great, honestly.
-
Ashe had monstrous screams live atleast. These days Dan doesn't even scream the old One stuff. Disappointing really.
Youtube some videos of Ashe performing Acceptance and Perfection. He was in no way bad live, his parts on Altered State were just brutally hard to pull off.
-
I'm a big Ashe fan. The reasons I preferred him on vocals were: 1) his lyrics; 2) his ability to craft vocal melodies; 3) his tendency to belt out parts where dan uses falsetto (I'm not much of a falsetto fan). That being said, I feel like Dan seems to be a better stage performer.
-
I prefer Dan, much because I feel like he pushes himself more, and not just in terms of just range. If you really study the way Dan sings it's incredibly diverse. He tries different styles, small nuances that you don't even always hear that makes his vocals more interesting than Ashe's. Ashe just sort of has his one thing he does, and he does it great, but it's not as rich.
Not saying that Ashe is bad though, I think his voice is lovely, but Dan is one of my biggest idols in music.
-
I prefer Dan, much because I feel like he pushes himself more, and not just in terms of just range. If you really study the way Dan sings it's incredibly diverse. He tries different styles, small nuances that you don't even always hear that makes his vocals more interesting than Ashe's.
Dan's parts on One are out of this world. The entirety of Concealing Acceptance is easily the best vocal perfomance on a TesseracT record.
Thing is I think he has evolved to a point where I just don't like what he's trying to do anymore. His singing on Polaris leave me very cold, I don't know if that's because of his Michael Jackson-ish influence but I just don't find it interesting one bit for some reason. Apart from Tourniquet. I can never say anything bad about Tourniquet.

I'm excited to see what TesseracT conjured up this time. Even though I wasn't big on Polaris, there are still some very nice ideas and songs. :tup
-
I peed a little when I saw that pop up in my FB feed.
-
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U2ZE4QmUCjs
So apparently there's a new single.
Don't know what to think overall, but that breakdown riff is fire. :metal The verses feel kinda lacking and I'm not impressed with the drum sound (but that's never been a strong point of TesseracT anyway imo).
-
I think the music is pretty solid and standard Tesseract, but I'm still having trouble embracing Dan's voice and lyrics after experiencing Ashe's work on Altered State in 2013. I'll probably still buy the album because I'm sure I'll like a few tracks (and I'm planning to see them in a few weeks on Long Island), but I'm not particularly blown away by this track yet. Maybe I need a few more listens.

I didn't listen to the track. I can't get into Tesseract with Dan on vocals. I discovered Tesseract with Altered State, and that record is simply one of my favorite records of all-time. Ashe has such great character to his voice. I went back and got One, was a little let down, and same thing with Polaris (which I got on release day). The band is simply not as good (to my ears) with Dan Tompkins as vocalist.
It's not that Dan is bad -- he's a fine singer. And Tesseract fans tend to really love the guy. No hate here. I just prefer Ashe, and Tesseract doesn't sound right to me.
Ashe's band, Voices from the Fuselage, is OK, the vocals are nice, but it isn't quite what I want musically. So I am sorta resigned to the fact that for me, Altered State is probably it. But what an INCREDIBLE record that is.

The song was okay, pretty cool riff at the end. What's up with the production though? Whole mix sounds weird.
-
I hope it's not the finished album mix, because honestly it doesn't sound very good to my ears.
Even the demo Acle uploaded in 2016 sounds better: https://soundcloud.com/acle/acle-march-2016-demo
And I gotta agree with the Dan sentiments. On One I actually find him to be much better than Ashe, but ever since Skyharbor I find his vocals boring or okay at best. Tourniquet is probably the only song on Polaris where I really enjoyed the vocals.
-
I tend to agree, but I will say I liked his vocal work overall on Polaris.
-
I think the song was pretty good, but nothing special. I was a bit disappointed that they removed the entire middle section from the original demo.
I agree that the mix is a bit weird.
I'm not impressed with the drum sound (but that's never been a strong point of TesseracT anyway imo).
Don't agree with this though. TesseracT's drum sound has always been incredible.
-
I really dislike the snare sounds Periphery and TesseracT use. Don't know why, but they sound really digital, overly floppy and processed to my ears. Matt Halpern atleast has really nice tom sounds, can't say the same for TesseracT. But hey, that's just my opinion. :sadpanda:
-
The song is okay, but I'm echoing the comments about the productions. It sound so muddy....
-
I agree with the people saying they cannot get into Tesseract with Dan on vocals. I got into them with Altered State as well, and none of their other albums even comes close to that one imo. Dan was great in Skyharbor, Ashe was great in Tesseract. But I just don't think Dan fits with Tesseract's music quite as well.
-
Dan's other project 'White Moth Black Butterfly' released a new single yesterday. I think it's really good:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y5jfhpIR1KA (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y5jfhpIR1KA)
They also announced their new album 'Atone'.
-
It's okay instrumentally, but I don't like the female vocalist unfortunately. Overall I found the song pretty boring.
-
I saw Tesseract last week on Long Island. I must say, the new song "Smile" came across really well in a live setting. The whole band was really locked in and sound great, Dan included.
-
So 'White Moth Black Butterfly' released the album, and I think it is fantastic.

I guess technically second single since Smile got released last year. On first listen I dig this, definitely more standard song structure in the vein of Polaris than any of the other albums, but it sounds good and the riff is heavy as fuck without overdoing it.
All that said, I think Smile is way better, but I love everything about that song so I went in expecting it to be inferior anyway
-
I like this more than Smile. Dan is much better utilised here than on Polaris. And jesus that intro/outro riff is so simple yet so good.

Yeah this is pretty much where I stand.
Also, production sounds better here than on the Smile single.

I don’t get it. How can Luminary be a single if it’s not on the album?
-
Seems like blabbermouth fucked up.
Here's the correct track list:
1 Luminary 3:12
2 King 6:56
3 Orbital 2:19
4 Juno 5:12
5 Beneath My Skin / Mirror Image 11:21
6 Smile 4:47
7 The Arrow 2:37

US tour announced with Plini and Astronoid opening.
I have officially peed myself now.
-
Wow, a super short album. And we've already heard two of the songs, so that only leaves like 25 minutes of additional music.
-
Yeah, every TesseracT album so far has been 10 minutes shorter than the last, and I already thought Polaris was really short. A bit disappointing.
-
Yeah that’s a bit of a disappointment, seeing as how it’s been 3 years since the last one
-
Really dig that track.

Me too...going to be one awesome concert year for me.
-
Luminary is really growing on me. This is an exceptionally nice start of the year for singles, between this song, "Condemned to the Gallows" by BTBAM and "The Silent Life" by Rivers of Nihil, I don't even know which has me the most hyped for the new album anymore. And then there's the new Harakiri for the Sky coming out in a few days as well, I'm in musical heaven.
-
New single ’King’ is out. It’s pretty weird but pretty cool. Except ”visions of a BLIND MAN”, that was a bit wonky.
-
I was watching some Tesseract live footage recently, and I realized that they are incredibly reliant on backing tracks. I would expect that, with two guitar players, that one of them would be covering the atmospheric stuff and the other would be covering the rhythm parts, but Acle and James both are playing the rhythm tracks and their laptop is covering all of the clean parts. It seems somewhat disingenuous. Thoughts?

They actually do play some of the clean parts, but I don't like the modern trend of playing to a click and using heavy backing tracks also. Unfortunately it seems to plague all of the djent bands, just because they write music that tends to not really be performable live (as in, they use a lot of keys and orchestral stuff without actually having a keyboardist. that always annoys me live).

Thought the song way okay. I'm glad Dan did some actual screaming actually, so that was a plus. Definitely gonna need a few more listens to let the song grow on me.

Review of the new album from some noob: https://www.sonicperspectives.com/album-reviews/tesseract-sonder/
-
I got into Tesseract with Altered State. I just can't get into Tompkins' stuff. I bought One, it was OK, and I didn't really like Polaris. It wasn't bad per se, but there is a quality to Ashe's voice that Tompkins just doesn't have. I haven't listened to the new song yet, but after being disappointed by Polaris, I am not sure I will.
-
Honestly, I think Dan did better work with Skyharbor. It's too bad he couldn't make it work with them.
-
I liked Polaris quite a bit, and saw them live with Daniel last year, and he sounded great. Really good show and I'm looking forward to the new album + haven't heard the singles yet.
-
Honestly, I think Dan did better work with Skyharbor. It's too bad he couldn't make it work with them.
He probably could have. My guess is the Tesseract name, and increased $$ from them being able to tour more was a big lure.
-

Which is funny since he originally left TesseracT because he couldn't tour with a kid on the way.

Yep. Can't blame Dan for doing what's best for his family.

For me, it's more than just the voice. Ashe also crafts better lyrics and better melodic vocal passages over the music he is given, in my opinion. That's just my take in comparing Dan's work on One and Polaris to Ashe's work on Altered State and his new band Voices From the Fuselage. That said, I totally get that some people prefer Dan over Ashe, and that's cool.

Not at all. I think pretty much anyone would have done the same if in his shoes.

Agreed on the lyrics and better melodies. Dan absolutely has earned his fans. He's got his own style, which I respect for sure. Just not as fond of it as I am Ashe's. :tup
-
Band posted video on their IG where were part of Smile. They have remade the song a lot heavier with screams and it sounded a lot better in the clip than the single. :metal
-
The album version is also longer than the single version that we’ve heard. I hope they did some work on Smile because the single version is their weakest production yet. But the other songs released have sounded better so I’m hopeful.
But yeah, that clip was really cool.
-
The Sonder album songs are great! I’ve always loved Dans stuff, except for Tesseract. Times a’ changing. Hope he doesn’t over scream and keeps the screams ... ehh musical.
-
I got the promo of Sonder yesterday. Listened once. Natural evolution from Polaris. A little less emphasis on djent too.
-
So the album is out. Having familiarized myself with it for a few days I’d say that most of it ranges from ’okay’ to ’pretty good’, but ’Beneath My Skin / Mirror Image’ is pretty damn wonderful.
-
First listen thoughts:
It's good. Nothing more, nothing less. Was really hyped after Smile and Luminary but the album doesn't really top those. The only exception being the new version of Smile, some vocal melodies took a bit of getting used to since I played the demo to death. Now, I consider Smile to be one of the most complete TesseracT songs (besides Altered State ofc) ever. Has everything I love about the band.
The 'epic, has plenty of good moments but lacks the dynamic I look for in songs of this length, some of those moments are definitely highlights though. Also I think it's a bit disappointing that we got 3 singles while the full album only has 7 tracks.
Haven't seen anyone mention The Arrow on the sites I check, but I think it's wonderful, might be my favourite TesseracT album closer, and considering I anticipated it to be like a 2 minute ambient outro this is even more rewarding
-

Best album closer?
But... Of Energy - Embers? :'(
Anyhoo, this album feels like a mix between Altered State and One, which makes it pretty damn good in my book. I'm glad they went into a heavier direction after Polaris, which I wasn't a fan of.
Why is it so damn short though? We basically got 20 minutes of music if you don't count the tracks that were released as singles.
-
I forgot this was coming out, I'll check this out today for sure.
-
Yeah, The Arrow > Embers. It's not just album closers, but I've always felt that TesseracT albums aren't as good near the end as in the beginning/middle.
But even though I really like the album, Altered State is probably my least favourite of theirs. Ashe simply doesn't sound like as good of a good fit for the band as Daniel in my opinion
-

We have the complete opposite opinion. :lol Gotta love it.

First impression of the new record is generally positive, I'm not blown away, but I like what I hear.
-

I am going to listen again this morning. If it is good, will buy the 2 CD edition.
-
After a few listens, I can say that it has its moments, but it is way too short and Acle's songwriting is really starting to piss me off. They need to learn how to arrange things to achieve a better emotional payoff. They had it in their earlier material, but it's not there in their new material.
-
I just finished my first listen, and I really like it a lot! King was probably the standout track for me, and Beneath My Skin/Mirror Image is good too. The only bad thing is its short length which bothers me. But I can’t wait to see them next month for sure!
-
Glad I decided to re-listen. On my fourth spin today (it is short, 37 minutes). I really like it.
-
it sounds like a generic alternative metal band inserting random time signature changes into their music
i got like halfway through the long track and had felt absolutely nothing from the album up to that point so i just, stopped
this does not sound like a band on their fourth album
-

I wouldn't use the term "generic," because they are far from it. But I do think that it sounds like an alternative metal band using time changes to make things interesting. And I don't really find that as a turn-off.
I will always think Ashe is superior to Dan in every regard (and I respect them both). But I can't fault TesseracT for trying to broaden their audience a bit. 10 Years (another alt-metal band) did the same thing with their last record, How to live as ghosts. My guess is, both bands will get a little heavier again on the next record. But I find both releases (the new TesseracT and the newest 10 Years) to be pretty darn good.
-
Smile is much more :2metal: now. Damn I love that album version.
Juno's intro sounds really similar with Periphery's The Event.
Two spins yesterday in a long car drive and first impression was that it's now their best but definitely not their weakest album.
-
Got a few spins under the belt, and while I am enjoying the album, it feels a notch below the rest of their output. There's a mailed in feel to it for me, as if they hurried through the process just to put something out there. It's not nearly as complete piece of awesomeness as One or Altered States, seems more like a Polaris light to me. Still cranking it loud as fuck though... :metal
-
Premature ranking:
1. King
2. Smile
3. Juno
4. The Arrow
5. Beneath My Skin / Mirror Image
6. Luminary
7. Orbital
Album ranking:
1. One
2. Altered State
3. Sonder
4. Polaris
-
I'm loving all the hooks and riffs. Seems like the album is a concept since there's some recurring themes on the album. My only complaint is the length. Maybe an extra song or two would have made it feel more complete.
Have you guys checked out the binaural mix?
-
Have you guys checked out the binaural mix?
Not yet. I likely will at some point in the evening this week.
-
Very solid album, concise and powerful. Nowhere near the majesty of Altered State, but roughly on a par with Polaris, maybe slightly better.
-
I think Sonder is a beautiful album.
-
I wish Orbital were longer. Such a cool track
-
I wish Orbital were longer. Such a cool track
Yes!! I do too. Just another minute or two....
-
Saw them last night in San Antonio. They totally blew the place off. Plini was the 2nd act and he kicked ass as well. Don't miss this tour. Tesseract's playing was tight and top notch.
-
I've been able to give it some more listens, and I'm definitely starting to come around on this record now. The mix is probably their best yet, and I love the fact that Amos Williams' bass is given the space it deserves. Although, it still bugs me that a guy who is responsible for a signficant amount of the shape of the album (Aidan O'Brien) isn't even in the band.
-
Yeah I'm beginning to notice a trend with how I appreciate TesseracT albums. They seem to consistantly not blow me away initially, instead getting better and better over time.
-
Same here guys, Sonder is growing on me big time. Starting to love it, especially King and Juno were big growers.
-
Plini was the 2nd act and he kicked ass
Plini was awesome
-
Just left the show. Enjoyed both Astronoid and Plini, but they pale in comparison to the mighty Tesseract. Holy fuck were they solid, and the new songs take on a whole other level live. With a few shows from them under my belt I can confidently say that they are one of my favorite live bands.
I recorded some video that should be pretty tight, I'll post it tomorrow.
-
Ok, these came out really good, combination of my new S8, a perfect seat dead center elevated ten feet above the pit, with a rail to keep the hand steady while I rocked the fuck out. Goddam these guys are amazing...

Tesseract pretty much just destroyed Chicago. What an incredible, intense show.
-
I think they do that to every city they visit.
-
Tesseract pretty much just destroyed Chicago. What an incredible, intense show.
Yes. It was an excellent show.
-
My two complaints are that I wanted more from Sonder, and they should have played a little longer. Had they done the latter, they would have had plenty of time for the former. Maybe they were afraid the album was too new, especially when they started the tour. Hopefully next time around they'll throw in a few more.
Other than that, terrific show. Great sound, great stage presence, really intense, Daniel Tompkins sounded very strong.
-
For sure, I agree with everything you said. Excellent show!
-
My only complaint was that they didn't finish Of Matter. I mean, c'mon man, it's three more minutes for one of the most epic finishes I've ever seen live.
-

I know, right? That’s how I felt when I saw DT and they did Erotomania, Voices, but not TSM. It’s only 3 more minutes! Lol

Here's the first-ever music video from ex-Tesseract vocalist Ashe O'Hara's band Voices from the Fuselage: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=72Z83SjhICQ&fbclid=IwAR0KBtmVvw-IlVHzv0gyiJAmCA1D2lWNYZsaGlEMfjFXrNqNZC0NGy-9l58
New album out Nov. 9. :metal
-
I never understood why people generally find simple band performance oriented music videos to be cringy, but personally wjen I saw that VftF video this morning I thought it was the cringiest music video ever. :lol
The music is ok, but never been a huge fan of Ashe's vocals in general. He is perfect on the song Meteorites, so basically when all the melodies complement his voice perfectly. I'll check out the album when it drops for sure though!
-
Tesseract has lost me, and Voices from the Fuselage just doesn't fill that gap. Like many, I noticed Tesseract with Altered State. To-date, that is still one of my favorite albums. I fell in love with it immediately, just how Ashe's voice really molded with what they wrote on that record.
My apologies to fans of Dan Tompkins, but while he is a good and diverse singer, he's not as soulful as Ashe, and I just don't connect as much with him. But, on the flip-side, while Voices from the Fuselage is OK, I just don't get the same vibe as I did from Tesseract's Altered State.
It is really disheartening. I am glad I got to see Tesseract on the Altered State tour in San Fran with Ashe. BUT...one of the guitarists was missing, and I was really let down that not only did they pipe in all his parts, a TON of Ashe's vocals are piped in, including lead lines, where he sang harmonies and background at times to his pre-recorded lead lines. It was really, really disappointing.
But NOTHING will ever take Altered State away. That record is pure gold. I need to get it on vinyl.
-
VFTF is awesome. Meteorites is great, as is Anew.

I discovered Tesseract on myspace back in the day, so I was kind of bummed when Dan Tompkins left after One. I didn't really find Ashe's vocals to be that compelling, probably due to the ridiculous amounts of layering and to me I thought his vocals were too one dimensional and didn't mesh with what they were trying to achieve. Then again, I also felt Dan Tompkins was a better fit in Skyharbor as well. The more I listen to Tesseract, I find their music to be too narrowly focused and frankly, kind of boring. Their song structures are frustrating and I just don't find Acle Kahney to be an effective songwriter. I also find it frustrating that they rely so heavily on backing tracks in their live performances.
-
Listening to the new Voices from the Fuselage album at work, and it's really wonderful. I'm very much looking forward to sinking my teeth into it over the coming weeks. At this point, I can definitely say that for me Voices from the Fuselage > Tesseract, which is shocking since just a few years ago I was obsessed with Tesseract. I just hope this new album gets Voices from the Fuselage the recognition they deserve.

Gonna check that out now. I loved Altered State mainly because of Ashe and his layered harmonies. Plus, the songs were all great. Didn't really get into Sonder. Voices From The Fuselage is like Ashe continuing what he did with Tesseract, I love the atmosphere, melody and heavy.
-
I thought Sonder was great
-
It's great, I just haven't played it all that much after hearing it. When I do though, It's a great listen.

Interesting. I've just finished my 1st spin on the new VOTF album and found it very underwhelming compared to the 1st one. I'll listen to it a few more times before final judgement. I also thought Sonder was amazing.

Yeah I listened to it for the first time earlier and really enjoyed it. It's only going to get better on repeated listens, so I'm looking forward to that.

Album is really awesome. The last three song are a nice ending to the album, Destitute is my fave after one listen, though it may change.

Check out my recent interview with Amos Williams about their new, live release, Portals. He's a really nice guy and was easy to talk to. Portals is a great retrospective of the band to date. We talk a bit at the end about next steps for Tesseract as well.

They are a band that I heard relatively early on and liked, but didn't spend a ton of time with. Saw them live supporting another band a few years later and my interest was piqued more, but it didn't go anywhere. Found Skyharbor a few years after that and was blown away. Then just last year on a whim I revisited them and they bowled me over this time. Now they've been one of my most heavily listened artists of the past year and I'm kicking myself for not paying more attention sooner. Tompkins especially has such a wealth of side projects to delve into, and every single one of them is worth checking out.
-
Similar story with me. Just think they fit the mold of progressive metal about as much as anyone. Like I mentioned to Amos. The first album was aggressive. Second was very progressive. Polaris was more progressive pop and Sonder was like an amalgamation of all the previous albums.
I think they are one of the most innovative and distinctive bands out there. But, based on Amos, it sounds like we are at least a year or so from a new album due to the inability to tour. Until then, we have Portals, which is absolutely stunning from a video and audio perspective.
-
I was just rewatching this video, and don't know if everyone has seen it (search doesn't seem to recognize it), but it has to be one of the most incredible vocal and guitar duets I've watched.

Soo...
I have known about this band for quite a while now (actually 2011, when One was the recommendation of the month on a German prog review site I surf on daily). But it wasn't before last March or so that I checked them out. Back then I couldn't deal with any harsh vocals. It took getting into earlier Opeth stuff to learn to appreciate non-clean vocals. So last spring I actively decided that I'd have to check this band out because many people who have a similar taste in music as me listen to them too.
It wasn't instant love like Haken, but I knew if I keep listening to their music, I would start "getting" and eventually loving it. I am now on my "second wave" and I am starting to absolutely adore this band! I am trying to approach them step by step, by really getting to know one album before moving one to the next one. I already listened to One quite a bit in March and also during the last 2 weeks. A week ago I checked out Alternate State. A lot softer (and unfortunately without the awesome Danny Tompkins, although Ashe is doing a great job too), but still awesome.
I love the approach that every instrument is equally important. And that there are NO solos at all. Haken has been taking a similar way on V/Vi, though not as consequent. And now that I think about it, I am totally falling in love with this Djent-side of the genre and I feel like this is where modern Progressive Metal is heading towards and should be heading towards to. I hear the difference to DT in that DT was inspired by Rush, Maiden, Metallica and a lot of classic rock. Now TesseracT (and Haken and as I'm sure many other younger Prog Metal bands) draw inspiration from DT and create something new with this influence.
My last big discovery was Leprous, which I am completely in love with now. Not sure if it will develop in a similar direction with TesseracT, but right now I am absolutely amazed by them!
I can't wait to check out Polaris and Sonder!

I can't wait to check out Polaris and Sonder!
Prepare to be disappointed :'(

Polaris was solid, Sonder was a step down.
-
Polaris was solid, Sonder was a step down.
I actually love them both. I prefer the last two albums than the early stuff. They are a heck of a band and a great bunch of guys. I have done the meet and greet with them like 2 or 3 times and they are very down to earth and amicable people.
-
Polaris was solid, Sonder was a step down.
Nah, opposite for me. The only problems I have with Sonder are that it's too short and it doesn't have much of an ending. I'd rank it next to Altered State because while Altered State has an amazing first half, Sonder is more consistent throughout.
Polaris is boring as hell. There's only like three songs from it I like.
-
I liked what they did with some Polaris songs released as the Errai Ep.

Totally agree with the too short critique, probably why I didn't really dig it much.
-
@Fritzinger: Your story is really similar to mine. They just came out at a bad time for me, where as djent was blowing up I was starting to get away from proggy/techy metal for awhile, so while I heard the album and liked it, I just didn't spend any time with it back then. I'm so glad I finally made it back around to them though, they've rapidly become one of my favorite bands.
Polaris and Sonder are more uneven than One and Altered State, but they still have some gems on them, and I could see the lesser tracks growing more on me eventually as well. But revisiting One summer last year for the first time in almost a decade was one of the most impressive listening sessions I've had in years. Those are the moments I always crave in music, to find the next great band, and sometimes it turns out to be one that was right under your nose all this time (and even crazier since I'd already even seen them live, but long before I could fully appreciate it).
-
I really love Sonder. I agree that it's short, but sometimes I then just listen to it twice. :)

I think the second half of Altered State is awesome too. The opening three-parter is amazing on its own and Nocturne has the album's catchiest chorus- But Altered State has some great things in store during its second half as well, like the unexpected saxophone solo during Calabi-Yau.
I understand the criticism that Sonder is very short, though I have not listened to it and can't say if it "feels" short to me. There are some great albums that have the same length though, like Yes' Drama, several Gentle Giant albums or A Love Supreme. But if those albums are composed and thought through well, 35 minuted can be enough. Let's see how Sonder manages this.
I still haven't listened to Polaris and Sonder because Altered State is still on heavy rotation. Awesome album :metal
I really love Sonder. I agree that it's short, but sometimes I then just listen to it twice. :)
That's actually a great way of doing things :lol
-
It's funny. Altered State came out, and I was blown away. I love the record, and it's still one of my favorite albums to have been released in the last 20 years. There was just something really special about what they were doing and Ashe's voice.
I went to go see them in San Francisco, and one of the guitarists had to fly home, so they piped in the second guitar. That had me questioning things. Then they start, and I noticed...no one other than Ashe sings. And there he goes, and proceeds to accompany his own lead vocal being piped in. he was literally singing along with himself, coming in on the parts he felt good about.
As a guy who truly values artists who perform their own material, I was crushed. Then Ashe got the boot, they brought back the old singer. It just wasn't the same. I still love Altered State, and bought Polaris and Sonder (they are fine, I've just moved on).
But Altered State is magic. I wanted it on vinyl, but since I missed the first pressing, I was hyped to get the edition they put out a couple years ago...until the price tag was like 70-something bucks U.S. Gimme a break.
Talented band, Altered State is one for the ages, but a real disappointment to me live, and overall, since Altered State.
-
Crazy....guess I'm glad I missed that show. I saw them after Daniel came back in San Francisco a few years later, and they did the opening trio from Altered States. Easily a top 10 concert moment for me, they just fucking killed it, and Daniel sounded solid even though as I found out later he was battling a chest cold. Saw them a few years after that and he even sounded better.
And I love both albums Ashe subsequently did with Voices from the Fuselage, so for me it was a win win.

Thanks for mentioning this! I think Dan Tompkins is great so I will check this band out.
I am still hooked and still just listening to the first two albums. Every time I discover something new. Recently, Resist hit me. What a moving track.

Ah....the second one was a bit of a disappointment...but the first...great stuff!

I actually enjoyed the second, though I do agree it didn't touch the first. (actually the second and third, they did an EP before Ashe joined Tesseract)
-
Okaayy so I finally checked out Polaris and Sonder.
I think Polaris is good but relies a little too much on slower tracks. The opener is awesome, but over the course of the album, I sometimes find myself thinking "duuudes cmon hit me with some of that heavy riffy shit like on Proxy or Nascent". Maybe I have to grow into it a bit more. TesseracT's melodies generally don't hit me at first or second listen, it took a few listens of the first two albums to really appreciate their beauty.
Sonder, on the other hand, is amazing in my opinion! It has easily the best production of the four (those drums :omg:) and I like its atmosphere a lot more than Polaris'. It's also a lot "slower" than One and Altered State and it doesn't have those aggressive riffs like on One, but the mixture just works better. I really love the double decker epic Beneath My Skin/Mirror Image. And I have to disagree with you, Buddyhunter, I think The Arrow makes for a great ending. Also, in my opinion, Sonder manages to make good use of its 36 minutes and I actually don't find it too short! When I first listened to it, I was on a 5h drive to Vienna and I just listened to Sonder 5 times on that drive :lol would never be possible with a 110 minutes Neal Morse album :lol I like that TesseracT albums are never over 55 minutes and that they really stuff and condense all their great ideas into those short running times. You might say, they lavishly throw around good ideas that other artists would use for entire songs. Still, I would love to hear some heavier sounds on their next output. I also love Daniel Tompkins' harsh vocals.
I held back with Portals until a few days ago, because I didn't want to hear any songs from Polaris and Sonder without having heard the full albums. I listened to it twice on another 5h drive. Let's just say, that finale from Of Matter in the Portals version is one of the greatest things I have heard in quite a while. That mix blew me away and I almost crashed my car into something at first listen :lol It's a pity that Jamie Postones couldn't be on this record as I really appreciate his drumming. But Mike Malyan (who I don't know) did a great job recreating those insanely complex polyrhythmic drum parts.
I can't wait to see this steamroller of a band live :metal
-
They are ridiculously tight live. :hefdaddy
-

That's because more than half of their live sound was recorded beforehand.
-

I'm not sure if that's fair. I admit, I have never seem them live, but by now I have seen countless YouTube videos of them, also non-official videos that were not released by the band themselves. But here's my take on this statement:
First, come on, not half of it is prerecorded. Don't exaggerate to prove your point. I know they play with a backing track and I am not the biggest fan of that, but many other bands do the same. Dream Theater has been doing it the last ten years. The difference is, no one in TesseracT is pretending to sing the backing vocals, like JP. Haken do it too, although no with backing vocals (I think). Leprous do it with a lot of their orchestral stuff. Some of those bands' music is just too layered to be able to perform every composed note live. Do I need every little backing vocal line in live performances? No. But they seem to want to bring their studio sound to the stage as closely as possible and that's fine with me. However, one additional guy on keys, guitar and backing vocals (whenever any of those three is needed) would make this band perfect. But they are not Muse and bringing an additional musician on a tour costs a lot of money.
Second, them playing with the backing track is not the reason why they are so tight live. It actually doesn't have to do anything with that. Backing track or not, the musicians still have to play their instruments precisely. And there are plenty of passages where there is no backing track running and the band still perform very tightly.
-
Still, I would love to hear some heavier sounds on their next output. I also love Daniel Tompkins' harsh vocals.
The band has been streaming the writing and demoing process for the next album on twitch for the past few months. From the sound of it, it will be quite a diverse album, with some of the more heavier stuff returning as well. I have been missing that side of their music a bit too, so I've been happy to hear that they're bringing it back to at least some degree. Of course, they are just demos, and might not actually make the album, but it sounds like the heavy is back.
-
Tesseract put out two new songs yesterday - not part of the upcoming album but some older material that hasn't been released. It's on Kscope's bandcamp:
https://kscopemusic.bandcamp.com/album/regrowth (https://kscopemusic.bandcamp.com/album/regrowth)
More harsh vocals than I'd like from them, but nice to have some new-ish music.
-
I actually really like his harsh vocals. Normally I don't care for hardcore-tinged vocal styles (either clean or harsh), but he's probably my favorite at it. Speed Strid has that at times as well I suppose.
-
Altered State could possibly be in my top 20 all time.
-
To anyone who attended the DT show in Belfast last night: how much did TesseracT kick ass?
-
To anyone who attended the DT show in Belfast last night: how much did TesseracT kick ass?
I was there - I must confess that I had never heard of them until they were announced as support on this tour. I did a quick YouTube scan earlier on in the week, to get an idea of what to expect.
Anyway, I liked them, and I think they were pretty well received by the crowd. The crowd was only about half filled for their set, but I guess it's always hard to be the support act when most people are there to see the other guys. I thought a lot of they had a lot of cools rhythms, but they seemed to rely pretty heavily on backing tracks, to my ears at least. There were a lot of ambient sounds and effects that I don't think were produced by guitars, so if you were in the camp of not liking the background tracks that DT uses, I don't think you'd like these guys' use of them.
The singer was fantastic. Great range and power, and thankfully not a lot of the harsh growls, which is a big no-no for me.
One totally bizarre thing though - the stage lighting consisted of about 50 vertical fluorescent tubes, which all changed colours in sync with the music. Cool enough, but there was no overhead lighting whatsoever on the performers, so you couldn't see their faces. I have absolutely no idea what they look like, and would probably pass them by in the street! They could have lit them up at the end of their final song, even, for them to say their goodbyes.
I thought it was a strange choice for a support band that's presumably wanting to make an impression, get recognition and gain new fans etc. ???
-
Glad you enjoyed them. Tesseract does indeed use a lot of backing tracks but that doesn't really bother me. They always put on a great high energy show that I've always enjoyed.
I like Daniel Tompkins as a singer and frontman as well.
Re: their lighting - Katatonia and Leprous do the same thing. Or at least Leprous did - not sure if they've changed that up. I think it can work really well and adds to the overall mood of the show, but if you're not close it is harder to see them.
-
Yeah, it would have been cool if you were close to the stage, and possibly on the same level, but I was sitting on the tiered seating at the back. So quite far away looking down at the stage, which was a big factor.
Still, I'm sure I'll check out some of their stuff now.
-
Yeah Tess is big on atmosphere. Both with the music (all that ambience you mentioned) and live presentation. I always love it, I think they create a fantastic mood for their shows. That I love their music helps too I guess, I really dig the more atmospheric style of "djent" that they have.
-
Just checked their set, very Altered States heavy, which isn't a bad thing. Don't know why they didn't finish all on Of Matter though, Resist is such a great climax and only an extra 3 minutes. They did that last time I saw them as well
-
That's a shame that they're not doing Resist. Dan's version of that song is absolutely amazing. I wouldn't blame anyone for picking the lower harmonies when doing Ashe's vocal lines, but Dan hits the high harmonies on the "reeeesist"s like a damn legend.

Yup, the first time I saw them they did the whole thing...probably a top ten live music moment for me. Just frikkin amazing.

Can´t wait. It´s been too long since those 30-something minutes in 2019. Really liked Sonder but it's way too short.
-
Very excited about this.
Feels like this has been an unusually drawn out album cycle. They finished recording the album last spring, finished mixing and mastering before 2022 was over, so I'm surprised it's taken them this long to get promotion started. I must admit I was getting a little impatient, which I have no right to be, but still.
Also, the new album is confirmed to be over an hour, so no 30-min like last time.
-
And from the social media posts, it seems to have a concept album vibe.. At least that's what I'm hoping for lol

Amos said that they had really specific ideas for the artwork of this album, which would also tie in to the live shows following release. Even had a small crowd funding campaign for it. So yeah hoping that'll be sweet.
-
New track is absolutely amazing.
-
I heard this song maybe a year ago when they were demoing the album, and already then I thought it had potential to be the best Tesseract song yet. Hearing it with full production only cemented that for me. Yeah this song is so freakin' good.
-
If the rest of the album holds this caliber of quality, we got a strong AOTY contender here.
-
Aaaaand tour announced.
Halloween evening with Tesseract sounds fucking amazing.

This is well worth the waiting. I'm pre-ordering. First concert of 2024 will be booked soon as well.

Man.....I've tried and tried and tried to like this band. Have done the same with BTBAM, Devin Townsend, Periphery.....have tried to 'force' myself to like these bands. Just doesn't do it for me. I wish it did.
-
Finally got around to a second spin, and hot damn is this song amazing. Can't wait to fucking blast it on the commute home.

Totally agreed, they've definitely gone back to that core sound, but layered it with all the experience gained in between. I'm so fucking hyped now.
Not sure if it's in thread, but the album name is War of Being and will drop 9/15

Ok, they aren't fucking around today....full world tour dates announced...

This is a music video. Hot damn (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UnkpPIupQxM)

Diggin the new tune. Lots of space to breathe. I like it. I preordered the record after listening to the tune. I hear hints of the entire discography in this tune, which is nice. I miss Ashe's voice, but Dan is the voice of Tesseract, so it'll be what it is. I like Dan, just not as much as Ashe. Although Ashe was terrible live when I saw Tesseract on the Altered State tour. One of the most disappointing gigs I have ever gone to.
Can't go see the band in San Fran. Busy that night, it being Halloween. Unfortunate that's the only Nor Cal date.
-

For me it's either seeing Tesseract or handing out candy to kids? Yeah fuck them kids :lol
-
Put a bowl of candy and you will have done both :lol
-
I haven't listened to this band since Altered State came out, but I like the new song. Though watching the video made me think that the name of the song should be.....Djentjutsu. :lol
-
:lol
-
Really cool song. There was one riff at 2:20 that seemed a bit overly repetitive and overstayed its welcome, though maybe there's some metric modulation or something in it which will stand out more on later listens. But I'm surprised that all these years in Dan seems to still be experimenting with vocal nuances I don't think I've ever heard before on any of his various projects. I'm not sure there was anything especially One-sounding about it on the first listen other than the clean/harsh vocal dynamic and the tuning, though I'm not going to complain about either.
-

That sucks :( He was great from what I remember of the gig I went to. Just looked it up and it was a little over 10 years ago now :omg:
The new song didn't click with me at all, but that's not too uncommon after just 1 listen. Think I'll leave it until the album comes out before listening again though.
-

I love that part, and I actually really appreciate that they really give you time to lose yourself in the groove. Jay's crazy double pedals there at the end of that section don't hurt either.

I'm don't usually take advantage of VIP packages, but it seems the band is doing a exclusive stripped down performance for theirs.... Pretty sure I'll be taking advantage of that one.

I just hope there's an option for those of us who don't have a bluray player but still really want to see that documentary. I agree that it's great when bands do these. I've loved watching Periphery do it, as they've done a documentary for their past three albums.
-
I asked Dan about the bluray thing, and unfortunately he said the documentary is not going to be available in any other format. I'm hoping it's a sales thing though, that they'll let the album cycle pass, and then when all the special edition sales are done they put it on youtube or something.

It's a great album. Strong contender for album of the year :metal

Music video for "Legion". Pretty solid tune, probably won't be my favorite, but I'm glad the harsh vocals are judiciously being incorporated back in now.

Holy fuck this album is perfect.
I think Daniel just shattered the bar of what a vocalist is capable of, such a dynamic performance. Can't wait to get home from work and give this another listen on my good headphones.
I think my AOTY decision has been made.

I want to listen to it first and foremost on the bluray shipping out from BurningShed so, who the hell knows when that arrives.

I admire your patience dude...I for sure couldn't wait lol

All I have to say is Fuuuuccccckkkkkk... :metal
-
Burden is absolutely devastating.
-
Agreeing with everyone's comments. This album is absolutely magical. And aside from the music itself being fantastic, this might be the best produced album I have ever heard. It's the kind of production that just makes me as someone just getting into music production lose all hope. Sounds like a bad thing but it's really a wonder to hear :lol
-
I saw one reviewer say that the album is so clean you could eat off it :lol
-
Listened to the first half last night. It’s super produced slick proggy djent but for that genre/sound it doesn’t get any better, aside from Periphery who sound quite different.
-
Listening to this for the first time now and maybe I'm jumping the gun but this is pretty awesome. I'd prefer not quite so many harsh vocals but I might adjust to that as I listen more. But wow. I just finished Burden and it's :o

I think Burden or Sacrifice is my fav, but it's really solid throughout.

Lol, yeah sounds about right.
The comparison to Periphery is interesting. Periphery's latest obviously sounds great, with a really beefy and nice full sound. But War of Being is just on another level for me. Just so clear and crisp, and absolutely packed with little sound design details that really makes the experience so rich.
-
I’m enjoying it so far. Yesterday was the first chance I had to listen to it at a higher volume, and there were a few times I had to stop what I was doing to just focus on what was playing. Burden was one that grabbed me like that. Jay and Amos are a fantastic rhythm section! Definitely looking forward to listening to this even more.

Considering going to the tour. San Fran is on Halloween. The fam decided to pass, as my daughter, who loves Altered State and Ashe as a vocalist, really doesn't care to see Dan Tompkins sing the Altered State material. My wife would have went, but because its Halloween, and those two like to dress up, she's going to stay home and Halloween it all with our daughter.
I am on the fence about going to the show. I want to, but also feel bad missing Halloween. That said, my kid isn't a "kid" any longer, so maybe not a big deal. I really want to see them play a bunch of Altered State. So once the tour starts going, I'll decide. I cranked the first three tracks of the new record last Friday. Good stuff. I am going to listen again today.
-
Are they supposed to be doing a lot of Altered State on the tour?

Are they supposed to be doing a lot of Altered State on the tour?
Not sure, but it is the 10th anniversary of the album's release. They usually do several songs off of it.
I just got my ticket and decided to do the VIP thing because of the exclusive "stripped down" performance. The Regency typically has this stuff organized well, so I don't foresee any BS. Early merch is always good, as is early entry in a GA show. Should be fun. When I was last at a TesseracT show on the Altered State tour, (2014), the rhythm guitar player had a family issue and so he wasn't there, so they piped in his parts. And Ashe basically sang along with a lead vocal track they had piped in. It was very much a let down. One of the more disappointing shows I've been to. It was at the tiny DNA Lounge. The Regency is a lot more comfortable and spacious. I'm hoping that Dan fully sings live. I am assuming he does.

Enjoyed it a lot, more thoughts tomorrow.

Got a ticket as well, and am 99% sure of upgrading to VIP, so I guess I'll see you in line. We can chat more as the show gets closer.
I had heard about Ashe's live issues a few times from different shows... I saw them a year later at DNA with Daniel, with Erra, Contortionists and Skyharbor opening, and even though Daniel was sick to the point where they almost cancelled, he still sounded solid (actually didn't find out he was sick till a few days later). They did all of Of Matter and it still remains a top 10 concert moment for me.
When I saw them a few years later at the UC theater, he was in full form and was fucking god teir. Here's a vid of Concealing Fate I took... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9LyK-y1WSP8&t=200s (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9LyK-y1WSP8&t=200s)
As to this album, it just keeps getting better and better and better. It's been on a constant loop for me since release day, and I have yet to find a moment I wanted to skip, I just aniticipate each moment more and more...
-
One very strong thing about this album is how varied and adventurous the vocals are. Very nice! Lots of development coming from the earlier albums.
-
I'm not going to get into a lot of hyperbole or anything, but this album is quite strong. Definitely one of the best new releases I have heard so far this year.
-
Still haven't listened to the whole album yet, but in "Legion" the 3:20 mark to the end is just jaw-dropping.

There are some certain moments in the album that definitely make me do a double take... like the absolutely sick bass work around the 2:30 mark on the title track, or the drum fills in the early parts of Sacrifice. And the layering of the vocals throughout the whole thing is mind blowing...very curious to see how they handle that live.
-
Finally made it to this one. Hard to say on a first listen, but I could see it being their best since One for me. The title track and "Burden" are the standouts at the moment. Interesting to see how many rave reviews it's getting, and some aggregation rating sites have it as their highest-rated album. It's always seemed like even though Dan has had a much longer tenure with them than Ashe, there were a ton of people who thought that Altered State was their best album and preferred Ashe with them. I wonder if this album will shift any of those opinions.

I'm one of those people and the latest album hasn't changed that. Not sure it ever will either - for me, they just struck gold with Altered State.
I like all the Dan albums as well of course, but I haven't found War of Being to be a big step up on all the others he sings on. Still need to get my teeth in to it a bit more though, so that may change with a few more listens.

I am with you. I still believe Altered State is their best album. Period. Nothing has come close to it. Part of it is the quality of Ashe's voice, part of it is the material, and part of it is just how it hit me at the time. I put it on after listening to War of Being, and nope, Altered State crushes in every regard.
I picked up a ticket for the tour with the hope I'll hear a bunch of AS live again, seeing as how its the 10th anniversary. I look forward to the other songs of cousre, but I'm going to see AS. As I related above, when I saw TesseracT on the AS tour, one of the guitarists wasn't there, so they piped in his parts, and Ashe was very disappointing live, singing to a backing track, and most of the time, the backing track was the lead vocal line, and he'd just come in when he felt like it. I walked away disgusted.
So, knowing that Dan is an excellent singer, I am hoping that he does the AS material justice, and actually sings the lead parts live.
-
Sonder, despite how short it is, has actually been my favorite for a while. Polaris and Altered State are pretty close for me.
I do find it interesting that people have such strong preferences between the singers. They're certainly different from each other but to me they're both really well suited to Tesseract's music. I don't know if that makes any sense. I could imagine Dan singing the Altered State stuff and it sounding great, and that's exactly what did happen. (Ashe was actually not that great live at all when I saw him, but I don't know if it's a thing or if he was just having a bad tour).
New album is sounding better and better each time I play it.
-
I do prefer Ashe overall mostly because he sounds a lot more unique to me, but this new album is definitely the best performance Dan has given yet. He's definitely got more versatility.
-
I really wish they would have Dan AND Ashe. I don't know what the relationship is like between those two singers, and Ashe and the rest of Tesseract, but their sound --- there is room for both of those guys. And I think they'd sound incredible WITH each other.
-
Wow this album is just awesome.

It would sound amazing I think.

I must be the only one in this thread who didn't think Ashe was all that great in Tesseract. I thought his vocals were the weakest link on Altered State and, given how layered they were, I knew that they would be almost impossible to reproduce live without a substantial amount of tracks behind him. I think Dan deserves props for being able to find a melody in all of those songs and being able to make them his own, without the need for all of the layers and layers of vocals that were created for the album. Also, Dan brings it live.
Regarding the new album, I love it. It's probably my AOTY at this point. I think it's the culmination of everything they've set out to achieve. The mix is massive, the songs are interesting and dynamic, and it really sounds like a total band effort. Current faves are The Grey, Legion, Burden and Sacrifice.

You are not the only one. The AS live versions are leaps better than with Ashe. Would love a re-record of this album with Dan's vocals or a full live recording with Dan of AS. War of Being and Sleep Token's album are so far my top 2 so far.
-
I guess I have the best of both worlds here. I like Ashe just fine, and Altered State is awesome. I think the layered vocals sound really good on the album, but I also think the way Dan sings it live sounds great too. I'm happy that Dan's the one in the band now, as he seems to be a better live singer and a better front man too.
-

As someone who got into TesseracT with Altered State, I'd be up for that, honestly. I do prefer Ashe's tone, but Dan's no slouch and I like him. But I really feel like since Dan only missed that record, having a live version of him doing the whole thing makes sense. Not to slight Ashe, because I think Altered State is brilliant as-is. But clearly, Ashe had issues singing live, and Dan does not.

Ashe likes to harmonize and that's what I feel makes Altered State is the vocal harmonies.

I always feel like an outlier in preferring Dan and One, but I do still quite like Ashe and AS (and Voices From the Fuselage as well), so I guess you're even further from consensus than I am.

I actually like him in Voices From The Fuselage. The first album is great, the second was not that good but Ashe was still good.
-
I already knew that War of Being and Burden would be bangers, so no real surprise that they're among the best on the album. The biggest surprises are probably Sacrifice and Sirens, which are both wonderful. Legion is also growing on me since I first heard it. That entire last section is monstrous.
Really the only track I'm not really feeling is Natural Disaster. It's still a really cool song, but not quite on the same level as the rest. There are some really cool sections that I really like, but the vocal melodies feel a bit too jumbled and unfocused when compared to the rest of the album. Cool rhythms underneath though.
As of right now, my rankings are probably
War of Being
Sacrifice
Burden
Sirens
Legion
Tender
The Grey
Echoes
Natural Disaster
The top two may switch depending on how I feel that day. I also feel weird putting great songs like The Grey and Tender so far down, but I guess that just speaks to the strength of the album.
On the Dan vs Ashe debate: I really like Ashe on Altered State, and think that's a really strong album. It's a good thing Ashe's vocals are so layered on that album, because when they're not as layered on the VFtF stuff he can sound a bit weak (although that stuff is still also pretty good). I've always preferred Dan, partially because there's more power to his voice, and he just feels more stable, but also because he's so versitile, and likes to experiment with as many different techniques he can fit into a song. Much more exciting in my opinion.

Well, I finally had the chance to get multiple listens under my belt this weekend and... WOW. Bold statement here, but I feel like this is one of the greatest progressive metal albums of all-time. Everything about this album is fucking perfect. And this is coming from someone who for the past decade has been an Ashe O'Hara fanboy. Altered State is in my top 10 favorite albums, and I've felt like the band would never be able to recreate the magic from that record. The band's past two discs with Daniel Tompkins on vocals did very little for me and I haven't listened to them much since their releases. I was even ready to cast the band off as a one-album wonder for me. But this record changes everything. Dan Tompkins totally killed it in every way possible -- lyrically vocally, everything. What a masterful performance from him. Damn. This album is a masterpiece and Dan has catapulted himself into the genre's top vocalists. This album is mature and introspective and powerful and so many other things. Also, I love the way the band disappeared for a few years and then re-emerged with this behemoth of a record. You can tell they basically crafted and re-crafted these songs musically and lyrically over the course of several years until they felt like they completed nailed it. What a journey this album is. I'm so pumped to see these songs performed live next week in NYC. I'm even temped to splurge for a VIP ticket. Album of the year. No question. Tesseract is back, baby! \m/
-
After RJ's recommendation in the AOTY thread, here I am. Not familiar with their music overall, but I saw they are playing in NYC and i have a livenation discount that expires before the end of the year for $20 off a ticket for a concert at the venue they are playing at. So I started listening, not muhc yet, but what I've heard has my interest. I'll be checking out the new album this week, but I think I'm fairly sure I'll be going to the show on Friday the 13th!

This is the sort of comment I was wondering if I might finally start seeing. For me he's already been one of the top vocalists, but he may have even gone up a level on this one. People ought to dig into more of his work though, he's done quite a lot, with Skyharbor, White Moth Black Butterfly, ZETA, First Signs of Frost, Earthside, Chimp Spanner, Haji's Kitchen, Piano, Absent Hearts, Voyager, In Colour, and his solo work, he's kind of becoming the Speed Strid of prog-djent.

Days later, and I'm still totally hooked on this album. I have it playing in my car, on my iPod while I walk, at home in background on Alexa, on my headphones while I work in the office, etc. I'm feeling like this is one of those perfect progressive metal albums that only happens a few times in a lifetime when a band matures together and reaches their creative peak after years of playing together -- like Queensryche's Empire or Fates Warning's A Pleasant Shade of Gray. There's something that's possible when you have young, hungry and excellent musicians who have maintained the same band lineup for a period of time. It's like they become one. Everything just clicks in a special way. And the desire to challenge themselves is admirable. I just feel like this is one of those landmark albums in the genre. I'm blown away in every way.
-
Empire?? No this album is way better than that. :)
Comparing it to A Pleasant Shade of Gray is much more flattering.
In any case, I'm playing this album quite a lot myself. I don't know that I'll consider it one of the best ever, but it's awesome.
-
Still my front-runner for AOTY with OK Goodnight in second place...

I really just meant the perfect musicianship of QR's Mindcrime or Empire era and how the band's lineup clicked in a special way after many years of playing and maturing together. Reminds me of Tesseract with this album. Speaking of QR though, the song "War of Being" kinda gives me a "Promised Land" song vibe based on the darkness, introspective lyrics and emotional vocals -- just way heavier. The WoB song is one of the best things I've ever heard. So good.

I'm listening to this OK Goodnight band. Top 3 albums for this year would be Tesseract, Steven Wilson's Harmony Codex, and Sleep Token's record.

Found out about OK Goodnight existence 2-3 days ago via the Just For Kicks newsletter and listened to it due to the pretty cover. Interesting album! Can't say anything further rn but the folk/prog metal mixture is very cool.

Mike, I knew what you meant, re: Empire. But I disagree with Lethean about WoB being a "better" album. That's very subjective. Sound-wise, Empire is one of the best sounding albums ever recorded and had numerous iconic songs. War of Being is great, but let's see how it ages.
I do agree with you Mike, about the title track giving a "Promised Land" vibe, just more aggressive. One of the things I sorta said to myself off the bat.
Looking forward to the Halloween TesseracT show. I need to put War of Being on again in a few. I let it sit for this week.
-
I was going to say I should have added a smilie but I did - so I probably should have added an imo. I completely agree that it's all subjective. Someone might not like Tesseract at all and of course that's fine. They might even prefer the FU Geoff Tate album and if they do, that's their business.
My gut reaction was more just that better Queensryche albums could have been chosen, but I also know it's just my own opinion. Lots of people love Empire and I actually do like it quite a lot.

If this is the set, buying VIP be damned, I'm not going. Does anyone want a highly discounted reserved balcony ticket, and the VIP info (and I'll write an email or do whatever you'd like) to give you the VIP pass? This is for the San Francisco show on Halloween.

Why arent you going?
They are playing 5 songs off War of Being, 4 off Sonder, 2 from Concealing Fate, and 1 from AS and Polaris. Kind of makes sense to play the newest material. I think it's a pretty solid setlist. I personally wanted all of War of Being played..

Tomorrow for me. I'm fairly set that I'm going to go to this show now.
I may not like War of Being as much as others here, it's a good album, but doesn't blow me away. However, I was listening to some of the other songs from their set list and Juno fucking rocks. Awesome song. That may have sold me into checking out the show now.

Yeah, I'm a bit confused as well, seems a pretty diverse set, maybe a bit Sonder heavy for me, but to get 5 off WoB is definitely payoff on its own.

GG, you're absolutely right, they are playing the new stuff, and they should. I have ZERO issue with them doing five from War of Being. None. Really good album. I'm not as high on it as the rest of this thread, but I do like it, and do hear why so many people love it. But I found TesseracT with Altered State. I went to the tour. The show was awful. Everything piped in, including lead vocal lines. I was devastated because that record was, and still is, a favorite. I was hoping, since this marks 10 years since AS' release, they do a good chunk (basically the amount they are doing from Sonder) of Altered State. That was my hope in going. So I got a ticket in advance. But after seeing the setlist, and seeing that they are doing ONE song from the record I love and was hoping to get a...I guess I was hoping the show would give me the performance of AS songs that I should have gotten in 2014 from them.
But like I said, absolutely no issue with them doing a lot of War of Being. They should. Me not going is absolutely, 100 percent, a selfish, fanboy thing. But my time investment in commuting to SF, commuting back, and spending the day (I have VIP), is absolutely not worth the payoff.

HA! I am sure we'll run into one another at some point.
-
I am surprised they're only doing one off AS...the last few tours they've at least done all of Of Matter...
-
Chicago was an excellent show the other night. Highly recommend all of you go who are on the fence. Intervals was an excellent opening band as well! Just an all-around great night.

Well, nvmd. I ended up scoring a cheap ticket for Queen last night and went to that, while there, my boss told me not to come into work today due to potential terrorist threats in NYC. So I'm staying home and I don't plan on going into the city tonight for the show now. It's a lot of money to do both and I'm trying to see a show tomorrow or sunday too so decisions have to be made.

Crazy times we live in.

Crazy times we live in.
Yeah, my cop friend shared the report he got. Nothing specific but to be on high alert today so all the local schools have extra cops. I'm honestly not too worried, it's just a combnination of basically choosing Queen over Tesseract (that should be no shot at Tesseract) and then since I'm not in the office, it's a lot more effort to get into NYC later today. It's just adding up to not be worth it. Sucks.

Regardless if I would love more Altered State songs. They have quite a lot of albums after it, and also I am excited be getting Those Concealing Fate songs. I think it'll be epic as hell to end with what they're ending.

The value to me may differ from the value to others. Clearly.
Listed my reserved balcony ticket on AXS for San Fran at below cost. So if anyone in NorCal going wants a cheaper seat alternative, it's up there.

I went to the NYC show on Friday night and it was absolutely incredible! The band sounded terrific and the venue was packed out. I've seen Tesseract live four or five times going back to 2013, and this was by far the biggest crowd they've had at an NYC or Long Island show. The new album must really be pulling in some new fans for them. And the energy level was through the roof, which was awesome to see. The past few progressive metal shows I've been to featured bands that hit their creative and commercial peaks in the 1990s, and the fans at those shows were mostly older and just standing and watching. But for Tesseract, there were a lot of younger fans doing circle pits and crowd-surfing all concert long. I loved it. It's great to see the genre alive and well and the next generation of fans coming out in force. I consider Tesseract to be one of the flag-bearers for modern-day progressive metal. I can't wait to see what they do next.
The funny thing is that the band members aren't really young anymore (I think they're all around 40), so it's nice to finally see everything clicking for them after all their years of plugging away. It's well-deserved. I mean, they're now older than Chris DeGarmo when he left Queensryche, which is weird to me because I still look at Tesseract as kids in a way. But they're not kids anymore. And you can really see their maturity in War of Being, which I consider to an absolute masterpiece and an instant classic in the prog metal genre. It still hasn't left my car stereo or iPod. \m/

Thats all good to hear! I'm not surprised by the younger crowd. From my experience, the djenty style of prog metal draws out a much younger and wilder crowd. FOr example, Caligula's Horse at ProgPower had a great young and active crowd. I definitely wish I had just gone, but things just didn't work out for me. I did see from setlist.fm that they didn't start until 10pm? That's probably the only benefit for me of not attending. My old age isn't a fun when bands start so late.

I saw the tweet last week about Tesseract complaining about tipping the merch stand, but damn, Tank ripped them in his video explaining this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NUjqwLepY-Q (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NUjqwLepY-Q)

That's just how they do things. They are a band that seem to pride themselves on impeccable sound quality and immersive production, and they try to bring that to life live. They don't shy away from backing tracks to make it happen. I totally get not feeling great about it - I came away feeling similar when I saw them last. I'm happy to experience their immersive productions from my living room.

That's where I disagree with Tank. I have seen many, many, bands have that tip jar. Am I an asshole if I don't tip them? Does Tank even receive any of those funds?....

No ones an asshole for tipping nor claimed to be....

Paying $40-$50 for a t-shirt is my tip.

Saw Tesseract tonight, and they were awesome. I'd have liked them to play a little longer, but otherwise it was a great show and a great set. I would have been happy hearing every song from War of Being, so I'm glad I got more than half.
-
Did you tip at the merch table? ;D
-
I didn't go to the merch table, so no. :)
I guess I assumed that tips did get shared, so I don't think Tesseract has really done anything outrageous here. Though it probably would have been better for them to just have the tip jar indicate where the tip is going. I've seen it say it was going towards gas and food before, so in that case it was definitely going to the touring party as a whole.
-
I've always known tips went to the merch dude...baffles me how anyone would think otherwise.

I would've never even considered leaving a tip.
If I spend $45 for a fucking t-shirt, the dude should be tipping me.

The whole tipping ropic was a big turnoff for me as a fan. Jay the drummer handled that super poorly, in my opinion. And what a shame having that unfold in the middle of the tour for the biggest album of their career thus far. They're on the ascent right now. Just enjoy the ride up and don't whine about tips.
Not sure if anyone else watched their 3.5 hour listening party for their new album on YouTube, but Jay was constantly encouraging fans to digitally tip throughout the entire livestream. They needed coffee money for the tour, he said.
-
Shame on them for trying to make money...

I don't mind the tipping during a livestream event, especially if it's free.
One band I follow is Lords Of The Trident. Their singer does those How (Queensryche) orders a coffee videos.
They do a lot of live streamy things and always has the tip counter going.

The J-metal and Korean acts do it on the regular, and do fairly well off it. I remember Rolling Quartz did a full livestream concert, and the chat was a constant stream of tips, they probably raked in a few grand easy. Nemophila does paid livestream shows all the time, and usually have a thousand or so peeps on them. I wish artists would do more of it like they did during covid. I know Tesseract did Portals, Nightwish had one, and even IQ got in on the act, though there's was a freebie (with a sweet shirt to boot!!)
I realize the drummer didn't make his statement with malice, but he did come off poorly, probably cause they're not a tipping culture to begin with. Even the merch guy in question came in to defend the fuck out of the band on the initial IG post. That being said, I'll continue, and always will be, loose with my cash when it comes to live shows, they're a treat, and the mere 40 or so bucks we spend for our level of shows is petty cash compared to what some other artists charge. We're pretty fucking lucky to be in love with the more affordable artists...fuck, we could be die hard Swifties and have to take a second mortage out for nosebleed seats.

You're not kidding. My sister and her friend flew from Brooklyn to Kansas City a few weekends ago because it was cheaper to get Beyonce tickets at Arrowhead and pay for the travel than to spring for decent seats home at Metlife.

Whereas my last show put me out 35 for the ticket including fees. The gas for the drive to LA now... That was a whole other thing lol

How long is that drive for you? Did you drive back after the show?

It's 5-6 hours without stops. I got out of the LA valley then hit a Motel 6 for a few hours sleep before finishing the drive home. I had started work at 5am that day so there was no way I was doing the whole run. I did it once for Asterism and it was fucked. :lol

Gotcha. that's a long day.

Just got back from seeing these guys……what a fantastic show! I hadn’t really been all that into these guys but saw/read RJ really giving good feedback on the new album so I gave it a spin and liked it a lot. Then, thankfully googled their tour and saw they were swinging by. My and my oldest went……had a blast. Really good show….these guys can freaking play
I feel like I can and should say more but I’m tired. Thanks for the heads up on these guys RJ :tup

It's what we do here...can't wait for my turn in less than two weeks.
-
Yeah, just locked in my accommodations for Tampa for an overnight to catch this tour in a couple weeks. Sprung for the VIP as well, can't wait :metal

You will not regret the VIP, the stripped down performance is something else. Just two songs, but they played in the middle of the venue floor. No rail, no nothing, just twenty people and Tesseract.
As for the show...yeah, Tesseract always delivers, and this time was no different. The new songs translate so well to the live setting, and Daniel is in top form.
Here's one song from the VIP session... https://youtu.be/IJEjakDejRM?si=51i4TozLk1Fd874e (https://youtu.be/IJEjakDejRM?si=51i4TozLk1Fd874e)
