Odd thread, but whatever.
Yes, I love his voice. However his ego has been bugging me for a while.
However I have a feeling most people here will vote no.
-
Hells yeah I do.
-
I actually expect most people here to vote yes, given all the praise I constantly see for it. XD
Myself, no, I really can't stand his singing. Sometimes he tries doing this semi-rapping thing, and it's really annoying, and the rest just sounds like drunk karaoke night to me. But to each their own.
For the record, I do own Remedy Lane, Be, Scarsick, Linoleum, and Road Salt One, because I still like the musical side of PoS, and can get past the singing, but it does bring it down for me a bit.
-
I would like to propose a ban on Zook exclusive to this thread so things don't get nasty.
On a serious note, Gildenlow is one of my favorite singers ever. And yes, I like it when he raps, just as I like it when he does the shrieking high notes and the resonant low notes and the raspy shouting notes and the light falsetto notes and all of the other notes. Every note.
-
Doesn't matter if he raps as that's not him singing. His vocals are pretty amazing. He has a great voice, and utilizes it pretty well.
-
I love his voice and the fact that he has many different styles to it. Rapping is one of them, and I love the way he utilize that in Used for example. Scarsick and Spitfall, not so much, but I think the problem lies in the music there rather than the singing itself.
I also love all the high stuff he's able to scream out.
-
The emotion in his voice is almost unmatched. Yes, I love it.
-
Great singer. Probably tied with Russell Allen for my #1. If I could, I'd wrap his voice in nougat, drizzle raspberry sauce over that and then add a final outer shell of chocolate.
-
I really like his voice and the emotions it conveys.
-
He's one of my favourite singers, so yes, definitely.
-
Heeerrrreess ZOOKY! No I don't like his voice. I think it's atrocious. I'd rather listen to Dave Mustaine. Not trolling. Dave might be a horrible singer, but I still enjoy his voice. Maybe it's because I grew up listening to Megadeth though.
-
A few months ago I would have said no, but seeing as PoS has really been clicking lately, yes is the only answer.
-
Hes good, but not great in my opinion.
-
His voice is fucking amazing.
-
Nah man, i think the best singer in the world's voice is terrible :neverusethis:
-
His voice is a great tool indeed. But, so is he. So, I voted yes.

Despite everything, my favourite vocalist ever, and the competition is massive.

Yes, I do. One of my favourite vocalists.

I Love his voice.
-
I love his voice. It's filled with passion, emotion, and sincerity, and he can reach high falsettos without sounding cheesy.

I know who he is, I was being an ass.
The only thing I've been able to listen to where he sings is the Led Zepplin cover thing with Portnoy.

His voice on that Zep thing was the worst I've heard him. He is one of my favourite singers ever though.

:lol
True. Actually I don't really like or hate his voice, but I do think his band's music is pretty bad. He's obviously a talented singer, but I feel like he goes way over-the-top with cheesiness a lot.

His voice..........
His voice is outstanding. As other people have said, he has the ability to convey emotions unlike any singer. Just look at the closing tracks for every album since TPE Pt. 1...
Especially Beyond the Pale. The part between "And I remember when you said you'd been under him" and "remedy lane of whens and whys" just might be the greatest thing my ears have ever heard from a vocalist.
god damn the closing tracks on their albums are so amazing
-
Yes. One of my favourite singers.

His voice is very good. Its the overall package of PoS that I don't see the massive appeal for. Or his political tool-ness.
-
I like his voice a lot. But, just like the rest of Pain of Salvation's music, I haven't liked the direction he's gone in with his singing as much on the last few albums.
-
Well, I might agree there.
This is not a complaint towards the music on the latter PoS-albums, but Scarsick and BE has quite some rapping-parts, and I mean.. cool that he can rap, but those parts when he raps, I just feel like he could've done something more "interesting" with the singing.
Well, Road Salt One didn't really have much of that at least. :)
-
I really really don't like PoS, but I still love Gildenlol's voice.
-

Not liking PoS is like not liking life in general.
Ask me, I know. :lol
-
No.
-
Either way you turn, Gildenlow will be there. Open up your skull, Gildenlow will be there.
-

This probably sums it up best for me. It's hard to give a simple yes or no, because what he does is so diverse. There's no denying that he is a tremendous vocal talent. But as far as whether I "like" him as a vocalist, I would give him mixed reviews. I would compare him to Mike Patton in a lot of ways. By that, I mean that he is very talented, very creative, very expressive, and has an incredibly wide array of styles he is able to draw on. However, also like Patton, some of the stuff he does, both in terms of his own vocals and in terms of the musical compositions he is singing on, are too odd and don't appeal to me, even though I can definitely recognize and appreciate the artistic factor in what he is doing. Does that make sense?
-
I get what you're saying, and I think everyone knows a few artists that fit that same bill in their views. It's a better outlook than "this singer does not fit my standards, therefore he/she must be terrible."
-
Depends. On a song like If You Wait, yes. On a song like No way, no.
-
No one has said that though.
-
Yeah. I do.
-
Very much so.
-

.....OK.
-
I don't love PoS but I think he's a fantastic singer.
-
He's alright.
He has quite a bit of range, but, my biggest problem with him, is that he tries to use waaaaaaaay too much of his vocal range, like, all the time. Plus, I overall don't really like his harsh vocals and his rapping. There are a few songs where I enjoy his use of those vocal ranges, but they're pretty sparse.
I think the comparison to Patton is good. They're both extremely versatile singers, but, they also seem to overuse their voices too much. There's something to be said for exhibiting a bit of control.
-
I'm sloooooooowly starting to like his voice.
-
Let's just say I Mangini'd when I heard his voice, and leave it at that.
-
Yes.
His voice is outstanding.
That is all.

LOL
-
Yes.
-
Yes, but I'm not that much of a POS fan.
-
also on the topic of daniel's vox; the last couple days i've been spinning the hell outta the song he did for Axamenta a few years back. SO good. and such a POS-esque track. totally sounds like it coulda been on the perfect element.
-
I listened to some of Beyond The Pale earlier. His voice wasn't as annoying as usual, but I wanted to turn the song off so many times because of that damn guitar. Eventually I lost interest.
So I retract my earlier statements. His voice CAN be atrocious, but not always. I still don't see the big deal.

If you like cheese covered in cheese with more cheese on the side.
-
No thanks. I already said I wasn't a fan of Gildenlow.
-
I agree that Russell Allen is a better singer, but DG has a much wider range of styles.
-
I love DG, I just wish he had a better self awareness for when his theatrics become contrived.
-
What a shocking DTF result to this poll, I'd never have guessed.
-
Good point. On most other music boards, the results would be more like:
Yes: 5%
No: 2%
Who?: 93%
-
What a shocking DTF result to this poll, I'd never have guessed.
In what way is it shocking?
Even the people that don't like PoS (god knows why) are at least able to identify him as a good singer, or well.. some are. :P

Says the person that didn't like PoS for forever.

Yes, I love his voice. However his ego has been bugging me for a while.
The ego thing 1000%. I was just thinking about this the other day. I think his voice has been sub-par the last 2 albums. His vocals on Remedy Lane and PE1 were just stellar.
-
Well duh.
-
He's one of my favorite singers in any genre. One of the people I'm gonna stalk the rest of my life until he agrees to work with me on a project. Seriously.
-
Good idea. DG is great with weaving tragic life experiences into compelling songs.

Pretty much this. He's incredibly talented, but he has a habit of going really far over the top, which kills it a bit for me. This problem is also getting worse as every album goes by.
-
It's literally my favorite voice. LaBrie is and always will be 2nd favorite because of the existence of Dan.
