Title: Implode's Song Roulette - The RESULTS are IN
Post by: Implode on August 07, 2011, 10:45:13 AM
Welcome to Implode's Song Roulette!

This roulette is pretty straight forward.

The contestants are:

-Cup
-H
-RaphaelRaven
-Nekov
-Ravenheart
-orcus116
-Iarwain
-YtseBitsySpider
-energythief

There will be 8 rounds.

1. Short and Sweet
2. Lovably Light
3. Hella Heavy
4. Incredible Instrumental
5. Can Listen Only Once
6. Before my Time
7. Round of Second Chances
8. Anything and Everything

The parameters of these rounds will be explained in detail as the rounds come up. Each member will have up to 24 hours after the I post the round to submit a song, but I'll start listening as soon as all are in, of course. PM me if you need an extension. I'll be using a song rating system from 1 to 5, 5 being the highest/best. The rating applied to a submitted song will yield an equal number of points. Highest amount of points at the end wins!

https://www.last.fm/user/Implode573

I only got Last.fm within the past few months, so I haven't had a chance to scobble my entire collection, but I'd say it's good enough to get an idea. Generally I consider myself to have a very open mind about music. I'll listen to anything, but keep in mind a few things as you're submitting songs. All ratings will be completely subjective to me. While I have a hard time saying any genre of music objectively sucks certain sounds, such as modern pop, screaming vocals, and modern country don't exactly do it for me. However, feel to submit whatever you want if you're confident I'll like it. Also, as I already have a large collection of soundtracks and classical music, there's no need to send me any of that. If you send me a song that I already know, I'll notify you and let you pick another song at no penalty. After all, I'm trying to discover music that is mostly new to me.

Good luck to all!

The first round is part of a bunch of over used themes:

1. Short and Sweet!

Submit a song that is less than 4 minutes in length!

GOGOGO!

You know? I think the music I listen to has changed my perception of what a short song is.

The other day I had about 3 minutes before I had to leave so I thought: "Oh, I'll just put on a short song before I go".

Out of all the songs I came up with, the shortest one was just over 4 and a half minutes long.

Implode, what is the rule with sending songs by the same artist in later rounds?
Title: Re: Implode's Song Roulette - ROUND 1
Post by: Implode on August 07, 2011, 05:06:20 PM
No more than two songs from the same artist can be submitted by a contestant.

Is that good?

And so far I've received 6 out of 9 submissions.

Sent, took a chance.

P.S.: This is my first roulette participation, so is there a protocol for where the audio should come from? I sent a YouTube link, but maybe that's a bad idea?

You'll have it this evening.

Title: Re: Implode's Song Roulette - ROUND 1
Post by: Implode on August 09, 2011, 03:41:08 PM
These are results for round 1 in order of submission! I apologize for the short comments...I'm not so good at putting feelings of songs into many words.

orcus116 - MoneyGrabber by Fitz and the Tantrums

This song had me dancing at my desk not too long after it started playing. It's just a really fun song, and I'm a sucker for horn sections. It was short, upbeat, and easy to listen to.

4

Ravenheart - Walk Away by Sarah Fimm

As soon as the female vocals came in, I was expecting the songs to break out into a kind of Flyleaf metal way. But to my surprise (and slight relief) it never did. The smooth, flowing melodic line with the subdivision groove underneath creates a dark mood that comes across clearly and easily. It's a nice ambient listen but edging on lifeless. I bet that it's completely intentional, but hey. Like I said, I'm rating these songs as how much I like them and not how much merit I think they have as songs.

3

Iarwain - Somewhere by Hüsker Dü

This song has a great drive, and I can imagine it'd a ton of fun to perform, but unfortunately it's a bit too static for my tastes. That combined with the weaker harmonic progressions in repetition just made me visualize a menu theme from a cheap 90's skateboarding video game.

2

Nekov - Regenerator by Marco Minnemann

As soon as I saw Marco Minnemann was the artist, I was excited to listen to the song. To be honest I had not heard of him before the DT auditions, and he had me wondering what he'd do in a band setting. This song is able to be laid back while the drums maintain a sense of energy. It has a refreshing sound and a really fun vocal melody. Unfortunately it didn't quite make the next number.

3

MasterShakezula - Peaches En Regalia by Frank Zappa

I've seen many a people mention Zappa, but I haven't had the chance to hear for myself. This instrumentation is fascinating. It's just so...feel good. The solos are amazing and exciting to listen to. I can't figure out what else to say.

4

Ħ - Coil by Opeth

I've only heard a few seconds of Opeth before, and I remember thinking, "I wish could get into this music more. A lot of it is freaking beautiful." And that's exactly the case with this song. I thank you for this.

5

energythief - Touched by VAST

This song has plenty of energy. It seems like it wants to push further in the intensity and pull back further during the softer parts. Not sure what to say about this song really except that it didn't blow me away.

3

YtseBitsySpider - White Rhino Tea by Ozric Tentacles

This has some great beats. Not sure why there's a Pull Me Under ending. Is it continued in a another track, did the video just stop, or is that just the end? The ambiance created is wonderful and the key solos are great. I love that flute sound. Over all, just a pretty groovy song.

3

RaphaelRaven - Scarborough Fair by Simon and Garfunkel

This song has a nice soft atmosphere. The echoing vocals are pretty cool, and the harmonies chilling. Is that a harpsichord? Pretty cool. Unfortunately...almost no reaction from me.

3

Right now the standings are:

5 - Ħ
4 - orcus116, MasterShakezula
3 - Ravenheart, Nekov, energythief, YtseBitsySpider, RaphaelRaven
2 - Iarwain

Lots of pretty average songs out there. I'm excited to be wowed!

The second round is also part of a bunch of over used themes:

2. Lovably Light!

Submit a song that is on the lighter side! The lovably is just there for alliteration, the song doesn't have to be "lovely" so long as it's good.

GOGOGO!

Very glad to see that you dug the Zappa tune.  The man was an absolute genius, and of the small-ish portion of his discography I've heard, the album it's from, Hot Rats, is one of his highlights.  And since this is Zappa we're talking, that means it's fantastic!

Anyways, sent!

The first time I actually did well in a roulette!  I'm so happy right now.

EDIT: I know you don't like screaming/harsh vocals, but the new Opeth album due Sept 2011 (called Heritage) has been confirmed to have no death vocals.  There are also plenty of other "gems" from Opeth that you'd enjoy.

^^I know, I was getting used to the BANG-BANG-BANG nature of this roulette, I figured it would be over by Saturday^^

Also, after reviewing his last fm, I expect to finish last.
I simply don't listen to any post rock, and very little pure prog.

Prog Metal
Power Metal
Thrash
Death
Core
these are a few of my favorite things!

Ravenheart is going to so own this roulette.....

And sorry for the wait, guys. The results will be up tomorrow! And don't be discouraged by what my last.fm says. I haven't been exposed to much more than that. That's what this roulette is for!

What are your guys' impressions about my music tastes so far?

These are results for Round 2 in order of submission!

orcus116 - Campaign by Russian Circles

This is a great ambient song. I love what it does, but I wish it would develop a little bit more. So while I like, I don't like it quite as I would like a 4.

3

YtseBitsySpider - Making Memories by Rush

This is fun and upbeat. Rush sounds great as usual, but I have the same complaint as the song above. It's just a little too static to be amazing.

3

MasterShakezula - Epitaph by King Crimson

That's right. This is a big name I've never really listened to. This song is pretty great. I enjoy the very subtle build it has. It's nothing that completely blew me away.

3

Ħ - Pure Narcotic by Porcupine Tree

Great acoustic sounds in this one! I also love the chord progressions. GAH, HIPSTER BELLS. But it's okay. This song is a great listen. I'm bad with coming up with things to say though, heh.

4

energythief - Fidelity by Regina Spektor

Oh god. Oh dear. I'm sorry. So sorry. But you seemed to have picked a song that I've come to loathe. I guess I just really don't like the singer's voice. The song makes me feel sick. May god have mercy on your soul. (:lol)

1

Iarwain - I'll Come Running by Brian Eno

This is song is okay. It's a got a good vibe, and it's very easy to listen to. But that's about it.  :-\

3

Nekov - Utopia by Tony Levin

Another very laid back song here. It's okay. I like the sound, but it just goes on while not really building or doing anything exciting. Doesn't quite make average, though.

2

Ravenheart - Loose Ends by Imogen Heap

Cool poppy beat. It wasn't too exciting though. It had really fun vocals. Yeah. Um. *cough*

2

RaphaelRaven - Landslide by Fleetwood Mac

Hey. I know this song. But I knew that you wanted to submit it whether I liked it or not, so whatever. The songs brings back memories; I'm just not sure what of. Good but not great.

3

Sorry about the horrible commentary I gave. I guess I was just feeling like there wasn't much to say. Also the average rating was lower this time. I blame the category. :lol This next round will be better. I'm sure of it.

Right now the standings are:

9 - Ħ
8
7 - orcus116, MasterShakezula
6 - YtseBitsySpider, RaphaelRaven
5 - Iarwain, Nekov, Ravenheart
4 - energythief

The third round is also part of a bunch of over used themes:

Well, I like newer Avenged. The first two albums (which are all mostly screaming) don't do it for me.  :lol I really like songs like A Little Piece of Heaven, Fiction, Unbound, but not God Hates Us, or their older stuff. Generally, screaming doesn't please me, but there's always exceptions.

What the hell are you saying? :lol

Now that everyone has their submission in, and I'm not busy packing for college, here are results for Round 3 in order of submission!

Ħ - Dark Chest of Wonders by Nightwish

I've listened to Nightwish, but nothing ever caught my attention. This is a pretty rockin' song. The power of the song with the harmonic structure of the chorus makes it resemble a kind of glory metal song. But heavier and less cheesy...maybe not less cheesy. Not sure about that.

4

orcus116 - Little Smoke by This Will Destroy You

The best part about this song is waiting for it to start lol. No but really. This song is fascinating. Such a powerful build and epic feeling. It's great. But unfortunately I have no desire to really listen to it again. Most of the time I can't tell what the hell is going on.  :-\

2

YtseBitsySpider - Night Comes Clean by Soilwork

This is a really fun song. I love the chorus, and the guitar solo is pretty cool. The vocals are pushing it, but the rest of the song is so great, it still gets a

4

Nekov - The Wolf Is Loose Mastodon

I love the drumming in this song. Unfortunately, the the lack of dynamic color of the song kind of slows it down for me.

2

MasterShakezula - Into the Void by Black Sabbath

This song is okay. Good groove, and I enjoy the change in the B section. The solo at the end pretty neat too.

3

RaphaelRaven - Kashmir by Led Zeppelin

I've only heard this song in passing. I've never really paid attention to it. Great song. This has had the best vocals so far.

4

Iarwain - Collapse Generation by Arcturus

Exciting. Very exciting. I'm not sure what else to say.

3

Ravenheart - Unforgivable Sin by Evergrey

This song was good. It was emotional, and heavy. I'm bad at describing this song.

3

energythief - Dance of the Manatee by Fair to Midland

Pretty cool song. I really like the vocal melody. Good job with this one.

4

Right now the standings are:

13 - Ħ
12
11
10 - YtseBitsySpider, MasterShakezula, RaphaelRaven
9 - orcus116
8 - Iarwain, Ravenheart, energythief
7 - Nekov

The fourth round is also part of a bunch of over used themes:

4. Incredible Instrumental!

Submit a song that doesn't use vocals! That's the only parameter.

EDIT: I know you don't like screaming/harsh vocals, but the new Opeth album due Sept 2011 (called Heritage) has been confirmed to have no death vocals.

Totally off-topic, but for real? I do like death vocals but at the same time much prefer cleans (really depends).

This round would be one of my strong rounds, and I went a little off the board even for me rather than something obvious.
I'd say 50% of my music collection has no vocals.

College IS an acceptable reason.

Get back to us when you can.

Post by: Implode on August 20, 2011, 12:38:49 PM
I CAN!

Again, sorry for the delay! Time for the results of round 4!

YtseBitsySpider - Riding the Tide by Arena

Oh oh! I love love love this. The synth is so nice sounding. The changing meter is a great driver of the song, and the harmonic progression create a beautiful psychedelic rainbows with golden clouds with shimmering water picture. I need to get off the acid. Anyway, think you for this.

5

Nekov - Digital ayatollah by Spinetta Jade

This song is interesting. There are some really nice grooves, and the dissonant melodies are catchy. It's like...smooth jazz, but not.

3

Iarwain - On Impulse by Animals As Leaders

Good stuff here. When that electronic beat came in, I was like :metal. But then it went away... Anyway, it's still pretty good.

3

orcus116 - Welcome to Bangkok by Brand new

This song is decent. It has a good build. But just kind of blah for me.

3

RaphaelRaven - Bouree by Jethro Tull

That was a great performance! I love his enthusiasm, and his tone is beautiful.

4

energythief - In The Hall of the Mountain King by Electric Light Orchestra

I was expecting In the Hall of the Mountain King, but the songs starts with William Tell Overture. :lol I thought it was an okay rendition. I preferred    Edvard Grieg's original better though. It kind of lacks the frantic horror that the story needs.

2

MasterShakezula - Nuttville by Buddy Rich

I love screaming trumpet, and bebop is my favorite genre of jazz. Great pick. I enjoyed it.

4

Ravenheart - Just Like You Imagined by Nine Inch Nails

The song was okay. NIN makes pretty good ambient things. Slightly bland for me, not bad over all.

3

Ħ - Count Bubba by Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band

This song's pretty good. I enjoy jazz, so good choice.

4

A lot of average songs again.

Right now the standings are:

17 - Ħ
16
15 - YtseBitsySpider
14 - RaphaelRaven, MasterShakezula
13
12 - orcus116
11 - Iarwain, Ravenheart
10 - Nekov, energythief

The fifth round is interesting.

5. Can Listen Only Once!

Time for the results of round 5!

Ħ - Hyperventilate by Frost*

Wow. This is beautiful. It really is. You know me, man. KNOW ME. Thank you for this. Thank you.

5

YtseBitsySpider - A Criminal Mind (featuring Lawrence Gowan) by Styx

Great performance, and a beautiful song. They always put on a great show. I loved the vocal melody and the piano of course.

4

MasterShakezula - Questions 67 and 68 by Chicago

Another good song! You people are doing great! It's really fun. The instrumental break before the last chorus is what made it for me.

4

Nekov - Astral Entrance / Master Of Sensation by Eloy

The soft intro, or Astral Entrance I'm assuming, is really nice. The rest is okay. Nothing super special, but still good. Great vibe.

3

energythief- Peacemaker Die by Extreme

This song has a really good chorus. It's a great and simple hard rock song. And great sample usage as well.

3

Iarwain - Gleam in Ranks by Maudlin of The Well

Good and powerful song. Kind of forgetful for me though.

3

RaphaelRaven - Thick as a Brick by Jethro Tull

Are you fucking kidding me? I have to sit through this? :lol I have a feeling this song might be better in another category. Long songs tend to be growers (lol). I have a feeling that's what this song has to be. It's just kind of okay. Some good stuff, but nothing blew me away.

3

orcus116 - That Kind Of Man by The Heavy

This song has a really nice groove. (I use that word too much. Sorry about my limited descriptive vocabulary.) Had my head nodding. It never really went any further than that though.

3

Ravenheart - Panic by Anathema

Oh! This is a really nice song! Simple, but compelling! The chorus is really fun, and I'd love to sing along.

4

Great round, everyone! Nothing below average!

Right now the standings are:

22 - Ħ
21
20
19 - YtseBitsySpider
18 - MasterShakezula
17 - RaphaelRaven
16
15 - orcus116, Ravenheart
14 - Iarwain
13 - Nekov, energythief

Ħ still has a dominating lead while the pack is spreading out in the middle!

The sixth round is something I'm excited for.

6. Before My Time!

Time for the results of round 6!

Ħ - Sugar Mice by Marillion

This song is really nice. It has a great laid back feeling while still being powerful and emotional. Beautiful. I had a great time listening.

4

energythief - The Prophet's Song by Queen

This is a great song! As always, great vocals from Queen. I love the journey it's goes though. This is best song you've given me so far. Keep doing good things. :lol

4

YtseBitsySpider - Try For Freedom by Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush

There's some pretty great guitar in this piece. I really love the sound, but...I hate to say...I really do. But it felt like it was just going on and on without really doing much else. It's good, but. I wish it'd develop more. Ugh. I feel really bad for saying that because I'm sure you or other fans of this song would argue it does have all the things that I say it needs. Maybe I don't know it needs. All I know is that...it just didn't amaze me. I'm sorry.

3

Nekov - The Whole Of The Moon by The Waterboys

Fun and upbeat song! I had a good time listening to it. I'm not sure what else to say about this one. Great job!

4

RaphaelRaven - Peacemaker Die by Extreme

This is a decent tune. I've always enjoyed Billy Joel. It doesn't do anything special for me particualarly, but it's not bad either.

3

Iarwain - Peel The Pain by Gentle Giant

Is it bad that I feel like you send me the same kind of songs every time? I bet it's my fault sorry. This one didn't really interest me either. It had some

good ideas in the softer bits, but over all it wasn't too enticing.

2

MasterShakezula - Get It On by Chase

While we've played this many times in our school's brass band, I've never heard the actual song. I think it's pretty fun! I can see that you're latching

onto a style now. Well it's working so far! Nice pick.

4

Ravenheart - Sea of Sorrow by Alice in Chains

I enjoyed this song a bit. It had a nice drive, but was too exciting. It was catchy, though! And I would listen again.

3

orcus116 - Baker Street by Gerry Rafferty

I found this to be really nice, relaxing, and beautiful. Good. Not great, but a good listen. I could really feel the emotion in the sax.

3

Great round, everyone! Nothing below average!

Right now the standings are:

26 - Ħ
25
24
23
22 - YtseBitsySpider, MasterShakezula
21
20 - RaphaelRaven
19 -
18 - Ravenheart, orcus116
17 - energythief, Nekov
16 - Iarwain

Ħ still has a dominating lead...I'm going by the music I swear! I sum of money I received has NOTHING to do with it! It was also really nice to see the bottom two score 4's and climb the ladder. Sorry, Iarwain. Better luck on this next round!

The seventh round is hopefully interesting.

7. Round of Second Chances

Time for the results of round 7!

Ħ - Fear of a Blank Planet by Porcupine Tree

This is really nice. I haven't listened to a lot of PT, but generally they do it for me. It's solid, but doesn't jump out at me.

3

Iarwain - A Corporate Merger by Estradasphere

Wow. This was a fun song. The instrumentation was great, and those rhythms...just fun. Fun is the best word I can use.

4

YtseBitsySpider - Alpha Burst by Derek Sherinian

Well this was great! Just as I predicted! The driving ostinato with the solo is great. I don't know why. It...just...is. It's very cool.

4

energytheif - Blue by The Birthday Massacre

Okay. This song. Was. Terrifying. I don't even know if it was good. But it was pleasing. So I'll just give it a 3. Hahaha. It was epicly I don't know. So weird. But so interesting.

3

Nekov - In the Eye by Iluvatar

Okay. This song may be kind of simple, but I still really enjoy it. I love the synth sounds no matter how 70's they sound. Great pick! Or...not pick...then pick. Um. Yeah!

4

orcus116 - Blindfolds Aside by Protest the Hero

That was a fascinating song. So many ideas, and so driving. I liked how it end lighter than how it began. Very cool.

4

Ravenheart - Losing Myself by Nightingale

Ooh. I loved the vocals in this one. Great tone! Too bad the rest of the song wasn't as awesome. But it was still a good listen!

3

MasterShakezula - Those About to Die by Colosseum

You know, if you keep giving me jazzy stuff, it's gonna stop working! :lol This song is okay. It's not bad, but I can't find anything special with it either. Okay. I admit. The solo in the middle is pretty great. But it's not something I'd listen to all that often.

3

RaphaelRaven - 157 Riverside Avenue by REO Speedwagon

Good song. I'm not a fan of his rants he goes on. So. Yeah. Hahaha.

3

I don't know whether I'm in a good mood, or you guys are just sending really good songs! Either way it's all relative! On to the standings!

Right now the standings are:

28

25 - MasterShakezula
24
23 - RaphaelRaven
22 - orcus116
21 - Nekov, Ravenheart
20 - Iarwain, energythief

I know things look dire, but there's still a lot of points to give out! I plan on pulling a Dumbledore at the end, so we'll see what happens!

Like eating corpses' eyes and standing in a circle and shitting on telephone lines and flying messages from King's Landing to Deepwood Motte and shit?

1. I already submitted.  :P

2. None of my photos were shirtless.

3. You're the last person on this board who should be accusing someone else of being creepy.

All in a day's work. Don't get on my bad side.

I think your hair intimidates me.....as I'm losing mine.

I can think of five or six things off the top we'd disagree about before we ever even got to the lake.

Time for the final results!

YtseBitsySpider - The Brotherhood of Man by Circa

This song started out great. There was a ton of power with a harmonic progression similar to the main motif of Octavarium. I don't mean to be dismissive because I know you are all sending me some of your favorite songs now, but it didn't excite me too much. It's like it started really well and high, but then it just coasted until the end.

4

Ħ - 1,000 People by Blackfield

This is a great song. It's really beautiful. Not completely as mind blowing as other things you've given, but it's still good enough for this score. I love it.

5

Nekov - Wrong by Illegal Aliens

This is a really nice one. It has a great bright feeling. It seems kind of flat though. No high points or low points. Just...level.

3

orcus116 - Limousine by Brand New

This is fascinating. The vocals are strange, but cool. I love the build near the end as well. Great pick.

4

Iarwain - 無き曲 by Boris

There was some great playing in that. Generally I don't like songs that seem just like jams, but this was alright. Not great, but okay. The beginning was really cool, then it just kind of faded in my interests.

3

RaphaelRaven - No Good Deed (From Wicked) by Stephen Schwartz

Great work. I feel the emotion, but I wouldn't expect anything less of course.

4

energythief - Shores of Avalon by MullMuzzler

Hey! That's JLB! This is pretty good song! I love the guitar sounds, and I had fun listening to this. :D

4

MasterShakezula - Incomudro by Kansas

This is a really fun song. I absolutely LOVE the keyboard sounds. Awesome. The drum solo is really cool too. Amazing pick!

5

Ravenheart - Amon-Ra by Dan Swanö

Another great song! Man, that breakdown with the piano. Awesome. I really like the melody and vocal line too!

Congrats to the winner.
Congrats to all particpants.
Glad you enjoyed the music.

For the record Implode I sent that last one, not really because it's one of my favs..I mean I enjoy that whole disc, but I though for sure I'd have a winning angle because you seem to be a YES fan. Perhaps that was my undoing at the same time...YES fans are a strange bunch as I mentioned in the pm.
