Title: 2011-10-02 - Rosemont Theatre - Chicago, IL
Post by: ResultsMayVary on August 05, 2011, 09:11:20 PM
Just announced today via https://v2.iloveallaccess.com/tours/dream-theater/dream-theater/

I was going to the Pittsburgh, but waited on buying tickets and my luck paid off!

Who else will be going to the Chicago date?

I can't find any concrete info on when tickets will be going on sale, either.

Fuck!  Same day as Ghost playing with Enslaved in Chicago.  I hope DT has a Milwaukee date so I can see both.  Blah!

Does Rosemont have assigned seating or General Admission?

I saw the scorps there, and it was assigned for us. Almost 100% it's that way throughout.

So I thought since Ghost is an opening band I might be able to see both and then I realized it doesn't say that DT is playing with Trivium for the Chicago date.  Also, with them playing Salt Lake City on Sept 30th, it is likely October 1st will be a travel day for them.  I guess there is hope they would play in Omaha or even Des Moines but not likely.

From what i've seen at other shows, anywhere between $35 and $70 for the basic ticket only. Granted this is Chicago and prices are bound to be different. Hopefully not too expensive since a buddy and I will be driving 8 hours to see DT in Chicago (from central Ohio).

Still waiting for standard tickets to go on sale. The venue's website and ticketmaster both don't even show DT playing there on the 2nd, let alone a time for tickets to go on sale.

I just realized something.  I've never bought concert tickets online.  The last couple of concerts I went to were years ago and both times, friends of mine provided them.  The last concert I remember actually purchasing tickets for in person at a box office was back in the 90's.  That's freaking bizarre.

In before Orbert you are an old fart please leave my planet, etc.

Does anyone have the internet presale password??  I want to make sure I can get some decent seats and I can't get this information anywhere.  :-(  I'm hoping someone on here has it...

Also, any suggestions on best seats for sound quality in this place?  Balcony okay or no?  I'm thinking the main floor...

I plan on getting balcony seats, but it doesn't matter to me. Any seat in this venue looks like it will have a great view and great sound.

Title: Re: 2011-10-02 - Rosemont Theatre - Chicago, IL

The starting time of the show is when the first act takes the stage, in this case Trivium.  If you're okay with skipping them, you could probably get to your seats closer to 8:00 and be fine.  But what the heck, you've paid for both acts; might as well see them both.  I've been to shows where the opening act was horrible, but sometimes they're pretty good and definitely worth it.

Thanks. And yeah, actually I want to see Trivium. The problem is that I am trying to figure out what time the concert will end so that I can figure out how I will get back to my university. Seems like I'm gonna have to spend some extra bucks on a cab.

If they are there, it will be a surprise. Their site says every date but the official dates on DT.net say they are without them those shows.

Trivium has the second listed, and it also has Royal Oak and Salt Lake City listed, which seem to contradict the Wikipedia article you quoted.

Trivium'll be there. This isn't some great victory, either. I WISH you were right and that they'd get a some actual proggers to open for them. But I'm bracing for the worst case scenario.

Exactly where does it say on DT.net that that show is without Trivium? I see that the listings for the Chicago and Royal Oaks show don't contain the "with Trivium" modifier, but that doesn't equate to "without Trivium".

Yes, because the ones with them say, "With Trivium". Same with Salt Lake City, Philly, Washington D.C. and Atlanta, The three Florida dates and Dallas. But, if something has changed and no one has updated anything and no new news has been spoken of it, i'm sticking to those assumed facts.

Look here. https://www.roadrunnerrecords.com/blabbermouth.net/news.aspx?mode=Article&newsitemID=161416

The dates listed here are the first dates that were released; if you remember, they were sort of released in two waves, with the remaining dates being released at a later time (for whatever reason). You'll notice that all the dates which were initially released have the tag "with Trivium" and all those that were released later don't have it. I personally find it much more likely that whoever posted these second dates on the DT.net website simply neglected to put on them the "with Trivium" tag that were on the earlier dates than that whoever posted the tour dates on Trivium's website posted 10+ dates that they weren't actually playing. Don't you?

Whoever posted the dates was too lazy to add the "With Trivium" to the second wave and all dates since then. Trivium and the venues both confirm that Trivium will be playing. Like someone said before, just because a whole 'wave' of tour dates don't have the "With Trivium" marker doesn't mean 'without Trivium.' And considering Itchy (who runs DT.net) doesn't necessarily keep things 100% correct on the site at all times, this doesn't really surprise me.

FWIW Royal Oak still said No Trivium on that link. If they are there it will be cool, but I can remember hearing they couldn't make it for that date.

Does anyone know if there is an option to hold tickets at will call at the venue? My friends and I are driving from Columbus, OH to see this show and at this point I don't know if we can get the tickets mailed to us in time.

You can pay $2.99 additional and receive an electronic PDF of the ticket, so all you have to do is print and show the barcode on that printed copy the day of the concert.

I may do that. If there is a will call option, I will definitely want to save myself $2.99, but that's reasonable. Thank you!

The Rosemont Theatre is awesome.  It's big enough to be a decent concert venue with great acoustics, but small enough to still feel rather intimate.  There are no bad seats.  Even in the back of the balcony, you're still not that far away, and you can see fine.  It's also a rather fancy place.  Wood paneling on the walls, carpeted lobby, heavy doors.  Rosemont is one of the "nice" Chicago suburbs, and this venue is smack in the middle of it.

Going to purchase my tickets tonight. Hopefully they have that 'print your tickets at home' option because the concert is only a week away!

Kind of a stupid question but, since this is my first show in the US, I'm wondering what kinds of documents (if any at all) do I need to show in the entrance (Aside from ticket)? Just any kind of ID with your picture? Btw, this is gonna rock, the videos on YT show they really stepped up and invested a lot on the production and lighting.

I've just always needed a ticket, but it wouldn't be a bad idea to have a picture ID as well, especially if you plan on drinking.

Nope, just Chicago for me. I have classes at OSU on Monday, so that ruined my chances for Detroit. I originally wanted to go to Detroit before I figured out it was on Monday.

I highly recommend that is anyone wants to have a meet and greet. There's an IHOP only five minutes away from the venue. How do I know this?  Glad you asked...I WORK THERE. I even asked for the day off, and I don't give a fuck if I walk in when it's jam packed and understaffed, it's fucking DREAM THEATER!

The IHOP is near the intersection of Mannheim and Touhy near some railroad tracks and the Allstate Arena due north.

Also, I'm going with FTBD7.

Is there any good places to eat in downtown Chicago (or surrounding areas) that I must check out? I'm leaving at 9am EST from Ohio and we should be Chicago by 3pm Central. That means i'll have 4 hours to kill! Give me food/store suggestions to check out (and their general location in Chicago and address if possible!).

There is a strip in Bucktown/Wicker Park along Milwaukee Avenue that has a ton of great places. It's northwest of the loop in Chicago and can be reached via the Metra blue line. It also has records shops, book stores, novelty shops and art galleries. The general location is at this link.

I recommend using a side street. Parking on any of the major streets is a nightmare. Just remember the name of the street and you'll be fine. They don't tow.

Sooooooooo, I'm going :D
But I'm busing it up from kansas city to see them. None of my friends like DT, so I'm coming up alone :(
Is anyone going to the show in the chicago area that'd be cool with letting me crash on their couch after the show? I'm planning on getting a hotel room if I have to. But it'd be just super easier if someone would be cool to help me out.

My facebook is https://www.facebook.com/#!/profile.php?id=1296210061&sk=info

If anyone is cool with hanging out before or after the show, just send me a message. I don't know anyone in chicago and I'm kinda nervous about going on my own. But Dream Theater live is enough of an occasion for me to sack up and do something crazy like going to chicago by myself

I am also going alone, and I'm not even from the US :P (here on exchange)

Anyway, just wanted to mention I'm staying at the Chicago O'Hare Garden Hotel which is quite ok if you are looking for something cheap (around $50 for a single room) that is relatively near Rosemont Theatre (7 min walk to the metro, one stop to Rosemont, and then another 10 min walk or so from there I think..)

I would be up for hanging out, but I got a Meet & Greet ticket for the concert though :P

EST is the chicago time zone? Sorry, it's because the tickets I bought online say it starts at 7:00 pm, but it didn't say from what zone, so I am confused.
Either way, I will probably arrive way earlier than the actual concert time.

EDIT: CDT is the Chicago time. So it starts at 7, should end at 10:15 - 10:30 in CDT time.

I have seen Dream Theater 6 times and this was by far the best.  James even did some jumps off of the drum riser.  At one point during Caught in a Web, James's voice cracked which just made him sing with such brutal intensity to get him back on track it was awesome.  He also hit a wicked ass note I think during Build Me Up, Break Me Down.

I was second row dead center.  To my left was a guy and his girlfriend and the three of us were jumping up and down, pumping our fists, and banging our heads through the whole concert.  The few times I looked around, people were into it, but I think we may have stood out.  It was a BIG theater and while they had part of the balcony closed off, most of the seats were full.  It was a huge stage too.

I might write up a more thorough review but man...THEY...WERE...BEYOND...AMAZING!

Just got back.  Absolutely amazing show, everyone was on fire, Mangini fucking own the joint and the crowd was with the band the whole night.  Here's the setlist (the exact sequence might be a little off, but I am 100% certain these are all the right songs):

Bridges in the Sky
These Walls
Build Me Up, Break Me Down
Endless Sacrifice
Drum Solo
Ytse Jam
Wait for Sleep
Far From Heaven
Great Debate
On the Backs of Angels
Caught in a Web
Piano Solo/ Through My Words
Fatal Tragedy
Breaking All Illusions

:Encore:

Pull Me Under

:metal :metal :metal :metal :metal :metal :metal :metal :metal

:EDIT:  I double checked the setlist, and while I did indeed have all the correct songs, OTBOA and CIAW were actually earlier in the set then I had initially posted.  My setlist above has been adjusted accordingly.

A rather short one, certainly not a full blown JR solo spot, but yeah, he did do a nice little 1 or 2 minute piano solo before the actual song kicked in.

Trivium is playing Chicago and Royal Oak. That is 100% certain.

I'm not going to continue to argue, but DT.net says Trivium isn't playing those shows. I don't care what Trivium says, it is DT's tour I would assume they know who is opening for their band.

Don't you?

Nugget!

Trivium was everything I hate about metal.  The screams and constant thrashing.  For me some of this is ok but not all the time.  I noticed there were a few people enjoying it so I tried.  To each his own I guess, if you like it, cool.

DT was awesome, couldn't have been better!  The set list was great and I thought the songs all flowed well together.

I have to say something that lots of others have been saying.  They really looked like they were having fun.  All the band members seem to genuinely be enjoying themselves.

At the end of the show JP actually got down on the stage and arm wrestled a fan!

I was sitting near the back of the place...  Some guy was walking out of the show during On The Backs Of Angels and gave me and my buddy his 5th row tickets because he had to leave...  I doubt he'll ever see this, but I want to say TTTHAAAAAAANNNNKKK  YYYOOOOOUUUU!!!!!  You are the best ever.   :hefdaddy

Spectacular show! Loved Trivium and loved infinitely more Dream Theater. Since it ended at 10:30pm, i was able to see everything. The theater was great, I met a lot of fans and one of them even bought me a DT can opener. I personally wish the crowd was more active (when I went to the concert in Venezuela, things were very different) because DT deserved it, but I don't blame anyone because their playing is truly hypnotizing. The lights, props and performance were incredible and I am truly convinced that JLB is better than ever. He absolutely nailed every song, was loud and clear, and engaged the audience very well. It took me 3hr to get there and 3hr to come back...I have a sore throat and no voice, but it was totally worth it. Cool story, bro, I know...but you guys probably know how exciting it is to come back from such a great experience.

I was part of the crowd in the center off to the left thrashing like mad men standing the entire time. I'm glad you gave it a try, but it's ok if it's not your thing. Like you said to; each his own.
Fuck yeah Dream Theater!!

There are no bad seats.
Having just gotten back from the event, I can say with certainty that this was a lie.

Sorry about that.  I've been there a few times and have never had a problem seeing the stage.

I was there, great show.  I was 20th row center.  Some of you may have seen me, I guarantee I was the only person there who was a ginger with a red fro...  Anyway great show, my 2nd time seeing DT.  I saw them at PN09 and that was nothing compared to this.  I didn't like Trivium, but I have to say their bass player looked like one of those characters you can chose to play on guitar hero lol.

Yeah, I saw you. I was buying a shirt next to you in merchandise lol!

Well, I didn't see any tragedies reported on the news, so I guess that by the grace of God everyone survived.

I managed to record 'Far From Heaven' on my phone and my friend next to me got the drum solo and Ytse Jam. We had no problems.

I was in Section 202 (Balcony) row A, first row. Really good view and the entire show sounded great. My only complaint was that I couldn't hear Myung clearly except for when Petrucci wasn't playing.

I managed to meet JR outside of the venue after the show, but my two friends and I had to leave right before James came out (he came out as we were leaving). One of my friends had to work at 8am (eastern) and we had a 7 hour drive back to Ohio.

It's just their policy.  Sometimes venues have special deals with photographers that give them exclusive rights.  In fact, most venues have a no photography policy, it's just that few enforce it.

I had my cell phone out and snapped a few pics of Trivium and was yelled at.  My cell phone is far from high quality so I found it odd they even cared.

Usually no one stands. So, there are no bad seats per se. But Dream Theater killed tonight. You might have seen me. I was the guy in the wheelchair air drumming with a Dream Theater poster on the first floor last row.
I'm kind of glad I was in the last row. I could stand all I wanted and not piss everybody off. I hate seated venues. It's a metal show, get yer ass up!

BUT IF YOU ARE GOING TO FILM, HOLD THE FRIGGIN' CAMERA STILL AND QUIT AIMING THE SCREEN AT THE CEILING, PEOPLE'S HEADS, AND OTHER OBJECTS THAT EITHER MAKE THE VIEWER SEASICK OR JUST SHOW UP AS HUGE BLACK BLOBS THAT DON'T SHOW US ANYTHING.

For the first time ever I can clearly see myself in a bootleg video.  Very cool!

Being that I'm not a professional writer this may come across as a completely random and jumbled review but I wanted to express what was truly the greatest Dream Theater experience I've ever had.  This was my sixth time seeing Dream Theater and it was without a doubt the best I have ever seen them.  This may stem slightly from my bias at being second row and meeting the band beforehand, but I honestly think they have never been tighter or put on a better show.

I purchased the Meet & Greet tickets beforehand and it was about how I expected.  I was towards the back of the line so by the time I got to them the line had slowed down a bit and I got to have a brief conversation with all of them.  Petrucci and Mangini seemed very humbled and appreciative of all the compliments.   Rudess and Myung were very quiet and I noticed both of them kept tapping their fingers on the table to keep them in shape for the show.  I told LaBrie how much I liked his lyrics and that I wish he would write more for future albums.  He shurgged and said something like, “We'll see.”  I also mentioned that I was looking forward to his solo shows last year before they got canceled and he rolled his eyes and said, “Yeah, somebody sure screwed that up.”  I again told him how much I love his lyrics and he stuck his hand for me to shake.  It was kind of funny because the lady in charge of the event asked us not to shake their hands to prevent the spread of germs.  It was totally understandable but he and John Myung both initiated the gesture which was very cool.

With the Meet & Greet you get a pre-signed photo, a nice ADTOE poster printed on card stock, a pick case with guitar picks with the signatures of each of the members and one of the album, a uniquely styled t-shirt, your laminate pass you wear, and a tote bag with the Majesty logo.

Now onto the show.  The setlist they used was “Setlist B” which I was initially underwhelmed by but I have to admit, I was won over.  By the end of the show I was soaked with sweat from how much headbanging and jumping around I did.

So let me review each of the members.

James – First of all, this is without a doubt the best I have ever seen him.  Not only did he sound great but more importantly he was all over the stage, even jumping off of the drum riser at one point.  He initiated so much crowd interaction that no one can deny he is an amazing front man.  During Caught in a Web his voice cracked which only made him sing with more emotion to get it back on track.  He even did a lot of improvising.  For instance, in Endless Sacrifice he started singing/screaming the word “Sacrifice” over and over.  It didn't necessarily add anything to the song but it was sure awesome to see him deviate from the norm.  You could tell he was not phoning in this performance at all.

JP – What needs to be said about him?  He was spot on the entire night.  Walked around the stage a bit, had a lot of interaction with the crowd, and approached James in between one of the songs which prompted James to get a worried look on his face and say, “Are you going to pummel me?”  He then gave the mic to John who said, “How 'bout them Bears?”  Being that there was a fair amount of Wisconsiners in the audience there was a bit of booing.

JM – Ever focused he gave a great performance as per usual, except he seemed to interact with the guys a bit more.

JR – I have to admit, I thought the Zenn Riffer was dumb at first but it was pretty badass when he got it out and stood front and center with JM and JP.  Obviously a flawless performance.

Mangini – In the second row I actually heard as much of the drums acoustically as I did amplified.  While that didn't make for the most ideal sound, I did love having somewhat of a more intimate experience with the drums.  Mike was ON the whole night and was even fucking around a bit and making faces at the guys when he would his various items on his monster of a kit.  When he was introduced by James the audience went ballistic.  James then tried to speak again and the audience would not shut up.  Just about everyone there was in agreement that Mangini is THE drummer for Dream Theater and they are not and should not look back.

The acoustic set was incredibly beautiful even though they aren't my favorite songs.  I was so thankful that Dream Theater now feels comfortable allowing just 2 or 3 members to have a bit of the limelight.  Truly remarkable to just see Jordan, JM, and James playing Far From Heaven.

When I first heard DT in the 90s, it wasn't anything to special to me.  Then I heard Scenes From a Memory and I liked some of the riffs but hated the prog parts.  With every album they won me over more and more until Octavarium when I became a diehard.  Now eleven years after my first Dream Theater concert I can truly say I have never been more excited for the band or the possibilities that lie ahead and I have never seen them kick so much ass.

Based on the few videos I've seen of this show it seems James had a really great night! He's hitting every high note with accuracy. Not something we've been used to lately. It really shows on the videos he's in his A game and he knows it. He's just fired up.

Thanks for linking the video.  Man, that Chicago crowd looks massive.  There wasn't a whole lot of people in the balcony but that is definitely the biggest DT crowd I have ever seen in the six shows I've been to.

Chicago fans take their sports seriously....we have to since we don't win much.

Thanks! Unfortunately, I only got that one video. Wanted to enjoy the concert 100% instead of filming :metal But seeing how good the video turned out, I wish I had filmed just a couple of more songs.

I really hope that shows up on You Tube!  :yarr :metal

Wow, my wish came true even better than I hoped. Basically the complete show has been uploaded by user "bobhilbr". Pretty much everything is there, give or take a few seconds here and there.    It was shot from the balcony, but the shooter does zoom in throughout the show.  The picture is good and the sound is very nice.  Every song and Mangini's solo is there, though Ytse Jam did get split between 2 videos.   It's really great to be able to watch the complete set.
