I'm just waiting to find out when these tix go on sale. The theatre looks like a good one, never been there before though. Will definitely be there.
-
Well, I've never heard of this place before, but apparently it's a Broadway type venue that holds 1,874. The last time they were at the Tower for the PN '09 tour (which was the first time I saw them) they didn't really pack it to say the least, so it makes sense that they're playing a smaller venue in Philly this time. I just wish it was the Keswick, but oh well... I'll still be there no matter what!
The show's not listed on their website yet. https://merriam-theater.com/events/?venue=235
-
think it was recently renovated which hopefully means a great sound system.
-
I'll be there.
-
Tix go on sale 15th.
-
I believe the only way to get tix is through the Merriam Theater itself, am I correct?

Not sure but that's how i'm doing it.

Trying to find prices for this thing.

Trying to find prices for this thing.
Same here. They're not listed on the Merriam Theater's website. What gives?
-
$68,$58,$48...the only one I'm totally sure of, though, is the $68. I called the box office yesterday and asked. Tix go on sale Monday, but please save me a couple of good ones until I get the chance to call!
-
So the Merriam Theatre just released some initial ticket prices. Nothing under $150 thus far.(Yikes) So I think I'll hold out for something in the $70 range, just wanted to let you guys know though.
Here's the link

Wait a second, what the hell is this...? I thought tickets went on sale the 15th?!
-
yeah WTF? Those prices are ridiculous! :omg:
-
There must be something special with those seats or something. Notice how there are only a couple available. I think I'll call them today and find out what's up.

cool would love to know what's up. thanks

Sorry guys, I mistook that other site for the official Merriam Theater site.
After searching a little more I found:
https://www.kimmelcenter.org/events/?venue=235
which has Dream Theater on the 16th of October (with tickets going on sale on Monday the 15th) and it actually states Kimmel Center Presents: Dream Theater.
So I'm guessing the Merriam theater is a subsidiary of the Kimmel center and all tickets are purchased through the kimmel center's site, which I wasn't expecting. I was thinking the Merriam had its own site, but I guess not.
sorry about the confusion guys
-
ok well what the hell was that then? :omg:
-
Well, depending on my teaching schedule this semester, if there aren't any more tour dates announced this might be the show I will have to attend. Of course if they added a NC date it would be middle of the week and I still might have to make this show.
-
I called the Merriam today and that site selling $150 tickets is a scalper site. They do go on sale Monday morning, and the highest price is like $68.

Thank you for that info. :tup

Anybody know what time they go on sale? I'd like to know when I should set my alarm for.

No idea, guessing 9 AM. But not sure.
-
I went to the Kimmel Center to see some traditional Japanese theater in the spring. Looking where the theater is, it's on the same street as the actual Kimmel building (which is rather huge) - 250 South Broad Street (the Kimmel building is, I believe, 260).
Got myself a meet and greet for this one. :metal
-
Yeah I saw the $150 the other day and i was like :-\
Just drove by the theater today. Pretty convenient location right near Suburban Station in Center City

The girl I talked to on the phone yesterday said that they are bigger than the Tower. Either way, it definitely looks nicer and is a nicer section of the city.

Doesn't the Tower hold over 3,000? I believe that the Merriam holds around 1,800.
-
I don't know, she just said that they are bigger. Maybe she's wrong.
-
Merriam looks a lot bigger than Tower when I look at the images or the seating chart.
I saw on facebook that tickets go on sale tomorrow at 10 AM

Yeah you are gonna have a memorable evening. I remember I got a guitar pick too at the end of the concert!
For me it's just Orchestra Row E, seat 17 which is all the way to the left when I look at the seating chart. The venue is pretty big though so I just wanted to be close to the stage.
https://www.clearwisdom.net/emh/article_images/2008-12-19-sykaiyan-03.jpg

it offered me a closer seat but the left as well. I chose Row M dead center in the orchestra. Should be good seats!
-

Wow, the Merriam is a pretty sweet looking venue! MUCH classier than the Tower, that's for sure.

Orchestra: Row F, Dead center
CAN NOT WAIT!!! :metal
-
Got mine...orchestra row P, seats 2, 4, 6.
I'm not complaining, but how did you guys manage such close seats? I called at exactly 10, was on hold for less than 5 minutes, and row p was all I could get. Actually, they did offer me row j, but we wanted aisle seats. Just wondering how you get row A.
-
I'm 4th row, behind the pit, on the aisle, Myung's side.
Or...

-
Nick, that's awesome! Do you know of any good eateries in the neighborhood?
-
Because it's on a Sunday and I'll have the time, I'll probably walk about 15 blocks in order to get a Cheesesteak from Steaks on South, located between 3rd and 4th on South Street.

In the past, some venues reserve the best seats for people that buy only 2 at a time. I think it's an old trick to prevent scalpers from getting the best seats.

I might have seen that place on the Travel channel. Do they have an arch rival cheese steak place across the street?

This might explain how I got Row A in the Pit.... not that I'm complaining of course.

If I could "Like" this post I would. :rollin

Oh, just that I was going to rape you or something.
What back alley do you think would be the most appropriate location for me to be violated in? I want to make sure I look up the directions well ahead of time.

That's one part I don't really like to plan ahead of time, kind of takes away from the thrill of the chase.

Any chance I could get in on this one guys?

Sorry, I'm a big believe in the sanctity of rape. One man per night.

I may try and go to this one. It's the closest one to me and it looks like Trivium will not be playing that night. A bonus.

Yeah, I was so pissed about that.

Why am I finding only VIP tix? I want normal seats. Are they on sale yet?

They've been on sale for a while now man. The only place you can get them is through the Merriam Theater's official website. You have to register an account there.

yeah its crazy they are also playing in Philly on Oct 7th

From the little I have heard of Periphery, they remind me of Breaking Benjamin. Is that about right?
-
you guys are so lucky to see periphery. i would trade trivium for them in less than a second
-
From the little I have heard of Periphery, they remind me of Breaking Benjamin. Is that about right?
:D :D
nah more like Meshuggah with more clean vocals.
-
Is there going to be a DTF meet up for this show?
I remember Nick and some others made one for the last show (July 2009, Tower Theater) but I couldn't attend.
-
Trying to get into periphery... what the hell is going on with the vocals? The singer is horrible! Listening to the cover of one by Metallica.. My god. And that might be the worst guitar solo i've ever heard. Damn I really wanted to like these guys because they seem to be popular around here.

If you don't like the singer, try the instrumental version of the album.

I remember I liked it a lot better than the actual one however I've been really getting into the singer lately. I took a while but I like him a lot now.
-
Got my meet and greet ticket for this show. Anybody do their homework to calculate which set we'll be getting?
-
I think, hope it will be set list b.
-
You guys are lucky you get Periphery. I saw them a few nights ago in Columbus, OH and they were really, really good. Such a good choice to open for DT, considering their musicianship, music, personal relation to JP, etc.
-
I have my tickets! Row A seats 5, and 7 :heart
-
I think, hope it will be set list b.
According to the dates, it will be setlist B! Let's hope they keep it the way it is. I am going to see Setlist A once and B twice! Can't wait.
-
I has tickets. Nick, I'd love to get a cheesesteak with you, but my dad doesn't feel like going all over the city before the show.
Maybe an in-lobby meetup for DTF members? Do they sell beer there?
-
I'll be at the show and if there is some sort of meet up, I'd be down.
-
Same here. If there's a DTF meetup, I'm there.
-
Did anyone else get the VIP Nation, I know I'm supposed to hear approx 5 days prior and we haven't quite gotten there yet. However, I'm so nervous since I haven't gotten anything other than a receipt from my payment back in august and the whole box set debacle makesme feel uneasy. I've been looking forward to this show forever and everything just seems too good to be true.
-
TWO DAYS :metal
-
Because it's on a Sunday and I'll have the time, I'll probably walk about 15 blocks in order to get a Cheesesteak from Steaks on South, located between 3rd and 4th on South Street.
Neon said Jim's Steaks are the best, and they're also on South Street. Every tried them?
-
From DTs facebook
"Dream Theater
Hey Philly fans! We have extra tickets for the show Sunday at the Electric Factory! Who wants to go? Respond and we will pick a winner tomorrow!"
Electric Factory? wtf... It's at the Merriam still right??
-
Yeah, Marriam is still right I'm sure.
In any case I'm going to Steaks on South around 5pm, anybody can meet me there. Probably get to the venue around 6:30 or 7. Will has my number, so if anybody gets together just give me a ring and I'll find you guys.
-
would love to meet all you guys but you all dont know me too well cause im kinda shy around here :'(
-
TONIGHT!
-
TONIGHT!
2Timer likes this.
I haven't been this pumped about a DT show in a while
-
This is my 3rd time seeing them. First was Prog Nation 09 and I saw them in Holmdel, NJ last year with Maiden. Tonight is going to absolutely rule :metal

SO FUCKING STOKED FOR TONIGHT!!!
Look for a young dude with goatee, glasses, short blonde hair, Progressive Nation '09 T-shirt, and black DT wristbands. That be me. :metal
-
Excited for the show! Im here wearin a brown striped sweatshirt at the end of row e

That show was utterly incredible, I am speechless. :hefdaddy

I snagged a setlist! :yarr
-
OK, so it's late, and I've gotta get to bed soon, but I'm going to leave you all with a few random thoughts....
First of all, the Merriam Theater is beautiful. WAY better than the Tower. I hope they play here all the time.
Anyone who says that JLB "can't sing" or that the band "needs a new singer" can suck my left nut. The Pirate was AMAZING tonight, totally bringing his A game.
I got to shake hands with Jordan and JMX.
John Petrucci was mere inches away from me. We made eye contact throughout the night. :heart
-
Another brilliant show. My 4th one of the week. Mike Mangini's drum solo has been different every night, and in tonight's edition, he found another gear. He was utterly amazing, what can I add? Force. Of. Nature. Period.
Oh and I actually had breakfast with Mike Mangini's wife. Yes that is correct. She stayed at the same hotel as us, and I met Rena in the lobby for continental breakfast and MM's wife and sister were there so we sat down with them and enjoyed a nice breakfast. They are both really fun and have lots of great family stories. A nice way to start the day after a DT concert.
After breakfast I had to pack quickly because Albany to Philly is not a short trip. Left about 12:30 and got there around 6PM. I did stop twice to break up the trip. When I arrived in Philly at the venue I went to the catering area and JP was having a quick meal with Matty his guitar tech and another guy who is responsible for their video presentation (the rhombus screens and the whole deal). I hung out for a bit and chatted about various tour stuff. But then Misha (Periphery's guitarist/producer) came in for some dinner and I got to overhear a fantastic conversation between John and Misha that covered lots of fascinating aspects of getting the best live sound, miking amps, using effects, techniques, settings, pickups, tubes vs digital, and more. I play guitar a bit myself and am a bit of a gear slut. Yet I understood maybe a third of what they were saying. It was a very high level recording/touring/producing conversation. Very entertaining to hear! They even negotiated a highly secret "exchange of information" (I'll show you this if you show me that). Fun stuff!
Periphery's set was very much better than Albany. I was talking to Spencer and Jake and I learned that they did not have a proper sound check in Albany. They had to correct an equipment snafu and that ate about half of their sound check in Albany. With the benefit of a proper sound check, their performance was much better. Separation was improved, Spencer's levels were much improved, overall much better sound. If you haven't heard Periphery yet, get their album. You can't judge by this concert because they are the opening act and as such only get to play through a piece of DT's PA system. I remember when DT used to sound muddy and overbearing and the only reason I liked the shows was I knew the songs anyway and my brain "filled in the spaces", as it were. It takes a lot of time, money, and expertise to get consistently good live sound. DT has resources at its disposal that dwarf the opening act.
And towards the end of the show James took a minute out of his banter with the audience to thank Periphery for opening the 2 shows, and described them as one of his favorite bands. How often does the headliner even mention the warm up? Like almost never. They will be opening the whole European leg, so obviously DT believes they are worthy. Trust me if they didn't, the opening band would be thrown under the tour bus in a New York minute. After which the bus would go into reverse to make sure the job was finished.
As far as the Philly show it was fantastic of course. Again. I can't believe the sound they are getting in these sonically poisonous cavernous theaters. Just great! Outcry and Breaking All Illusions are becoming my favorite live songs, although Beneath the Surface is utterly brilliant also. And Endless Sacrifice is kicking some major ass. But JP's solos in BAI are mesmerizing.
The room? It was packed, I'm sure it was a near sellout if not a sellout. The audience was pretty enthusiastic, especially at the front. Some of the older guys around me (Row R) were statues, but I made up for them to the best of my ability. All in all another great show. If I did not have a backlog of work, I'd head down to DC, but the mortgage has to be paid, so after a quick Poker trip to the Borgata, I will return to work on Tuesday.
I also heard that there may be some additional dates in the Spring. I don't think anything is set yet, but that would be fantastic of course. I am ready to clear my schedule again should the opportunity arise.
Also, Jordan is doing a "with friends" thing in November in New York. Only $32! Plus drinks of course. I am going to this, because Jordon amounts to a one man orchestra. And where can you get tickets to an entire orchestra, with some friends thrown in, for $32?
-
Awesome show. I seriously got chills during the acoustic set, it was beautiful. I was pretty close to the stage to the left but couldn't see JR which was the only downfall for me. Glad to finally see Periphery live too even though it was a pretty short set.
Awesome meeting you Nick as well. Was looking forward to seeing some other DTF members but I guess next time :)
-
My third and final show of the week. Great show once again! I was in row M dead center. The crowd was pretty lame to me but my friend and I did our part. Yes i was the guy who screamed... "John you sing like an angel!" at the end of the silent man. Got some nice laughs and applause around me lol. Anyway the sound was much better than in morristown but nothing beats the beacon! Mangini = Greatest alive. BLOWN AWAY. The man is on another level that's not human, well kind of like the other guys in the band. Fits right in!
-
Yes i was the guy who screamed... "John you sing like an angel!"
lol that was you?
-
I also heard that there may be some additional dates in the Spring. I don't think anything is set yet, but that would be fantastic of course.
Wow, that would be awesome.

I was touching the stage all the way on the left, John Myung actually spoke words to me, i almost cried on the spot!

Yes of course!
-
Yeah, definitely a fantastic show. Perfect setlist! I never saw TW or Forsaken, so that was cool. I love how much they represented the new album, and it was done beautifully as usual. It was my 10th time seeing them. Major 13th, I was probably 1 of those statues in front of you, we were in row P. It's hard enough on my feet just to stand on those hard floors for 2 hours, let alone scream all night like I used to. I looked for you, but I wasn't looking behind me. Figured you would be up further. PlaysLikeMyung, I didn't see your post about meeting until just now, so definitely next time, man.
All 3 of us absolutely hated Periphery, but I think most of it was the sound. Not the right venue for a band like that imo, and I think having 3 guitars really made things sound unclear. I saw lots of people leave the room and wait in the lobby for them to be done. I had to wonder if that's why they stopped so early, since I was expecting them for 45 minutes.
Overall, a great day. The only thing I would change is we wanted to find Steaks on South or Jim's Steaks, but my wife has liver issues and after 1000000 blocks we stopped and settled for Famous Steve's Steaks. I winded how much further the other places were?
I hope they play that place again !
-
A note on periphery. I'm not trying to be a dick but give an honest opinion. I was hopeful for them and wanted to like them but i thought they were terrible. Three guitars all using a digital amp sounded god awful. I do not understand why people don't' use real amps live like JP and most other people do. Digital guitar does not sound good live. I've heard it many times and it always sucks. I thought the singer was really bad as well as the songs. The drummer was VERY good though.

Periphery is an acquired taste, and most of those acquiring that taste are in their teens and twenties. I was at their show at the Gramercy a couple of weeks ago, which they sold out, and the fans were digging them like mad. But it's a much younger crowd than a DT concert.
I find it very interesting that once you meet the performers personally, you are so much more open to their music. I didn't know Trivium from a hole in the ground, but I met the lead singer and bassist in Morristown. They were really cool guys and were so psyched to be on this tour. So when I listened to their set I realized 2 things: Number One: I hate them. Number Two: I am going to keep listening. By the end of their set I found some things to like and I started to appreciate them a bit. If I had not met them, I would have been in the lobby looking for strangers to talk to...

No worries we'll hook up next time. By the way, the Merriam was the most sharply sloped theater I've ever been to. Standing for any length of time was agony. It was literally standing on a steep hill. Try that for 10 minutes, it doesn't work well. A couple of people who stumbled in after the lights went down nearly turned into human bowling balls, as they were not expecting to have to rappel to their seats.

This. I'd be considered as a "young" fan and I personally love the majority of what they do. Their drummer is incredible - probably the strongest musician in the band.

19 y/o here and I love Periphery. Saw in Columbus on their headlining tour and they were perfect. They all sounded great.
-
20 y/o reporting in for periphery. saw them 2 weeks ago live. loved it
-
23 y/o. Saw them last night and loved it.
However I will say that it took me a very long time to get used to the vocals. For awhile I was only listening to the instrumental version of the debut CD. I always loved the instrumentation and knew the band was young, talented, and had a bright future.
-
22 y/o here. Caught them during the middle of their setlist. They were ok from what I saw.
-
They sound much better in a recording. Live it really sounded like a big mess. It's not just the sound either but the music itself comes across odd live.
-
The show was good, but
raping meeting Reapsta was definitely the highlight of the evening for me.

Does anybody have any photos from this show? The security were being Nazis about taking pictures, so unfortunately I wasn't able to snap any. :-\
-
i snapped a few, they told me 3 times to put the camera away

So, I have to say that this show was easily the best DT show I've seen. The setlist was phenomenal, all the band was in top form, and the crowd was even fantastic.
Not a SINGLE song on this set is one I've seen before. Very welcome change *coughconstantmotioncough*. These Walls, Ytse Jam, and Fatal Tragedy were fucking awesome. And I have to say, despite hating Train of Thought, and considering Endless Sacrifice a bad song... it totally slayed live. The jam in the middle was amazing, AND JOHN MYUNG FUCKING SMILED AT JP ZOMG.
The Silent Man was great. I loved the mini acoustic set they decided to do. I hope they do more of it on future tours. There are quite a few songs they could rotate for that.
But holy shit seeing Breaking All Illusions live was amazing. The guitar solo killed live.
My only complaint about the set was that there was TOTALLY more time for another encore song... but whatever. Under a Glass Moon is a really awesome closer.
Great to see Nick again, and meeting Reapsta was a real treat :3 (he looks a lot different from what I had imagined... lol)
MUST HAVE PHILLY MEETUP NEXT TIME

Yes, they were very strict. Did anybody notice the kid up on the right side of the loge snapping pics all night? I wonder if he was hired by the band or something, because he was left alone all night.
And yes, Philly meetup sounds cool next time. Hopefully it's another weekend show. And if it's at the same venue, let's meet at the best Philly cheesesteak place to be picked by someone who knows! We were looking for Jim's or Steaks on South, and we settled for Steve's because I got sick of walking and felt bad for my wife who was in pain; turns out we were only 2 or 3 blocks from the good places.
-
Yeah SoS and Jim's are on South Street, between 5th-3rd streets, I think. They aren't hard to find, just pretty close to Penn's Landing :)

I've made peace with what happened. You don't need to hide it.

Before TSM:
James "I'm sure 99% of you are on the boards, so you know what's coming up next."
Crowd "The Silent Man!"
James "You guys are fucking creeping me out. Fucking creepin' me out man."

You weren't expecting to be so turned on by the beard, right? It has to be the beard.
