Nobody's in?  I think I have 5 Facebook people coming out.  I really hope we can sell this out cuz I've been disappointed with the music scene here for years in that we just don't go out and support acts like this.  Sure, a Rihanna can sell out 2 shows back-to-back here (20,000 x2) but we can't get 2,929 out for a Dream Theater?

Thanks. I couldn't remember the capacity of the QE. A step up from the Orpheum in size though. Was pretty cool seeing them in the big venue opening for Maiden.

I'll be there. I imagine they'll get a good-sized crowd. Think they can sell out the QE?

Yeah they been getting a little better known. I sure hope it sells out. They deserve it. Bands like DT keep their integrity first and foremost. It's still about the fans, ya know? And let's face it, whens the last time you saw so much talent on one stage at the same time?

I might be driving out from Saskatchewan to catch this show! Don't really want to spend that much money on gas, but if they aren't going to announce a Saskatchewan date or at the very least a Calgary or Edmonton I guess I'm in.

Wow that's a long drive,Dude. You must be a fan ha ha. I do Van to Calgary sometimes, but I'd be leaning towards a flight there. But like they say (I don't know who says), doesn't matter how you get there... as long as you are there. Good on ya.

If I can find a couple buddies, a road trip would be (almost) as good as the concert.  :lol

How long does Vancouver to Calgary take?

Van to Cal about 9.5 hrs.

In my experience in Saskatchewan, there is literally no publicity for bands like this. Maybe a radio announcement every once in awhile but nobody listens to local radio these days.

Still no advertising anywhere for the show but The Province actually had a review:

Despite the departure of drummer and co-founder Mike Portnoy, the progressive-metal virtuosos' 11th studio album finds them sounding more disciplined than they have been in a long time.  The 12-minute "Breaking All Illusions" shows how Dream Theater can weigh emotional resonance against algebraic time signatures.  "Far from Heaven" and "Beneath the Surface" are among the simplest and most poignant ballads in the band's catalogue.  B+

Not much but at least it's something and favourable.

I know Long and McQuade Music stores all over van are having a contest for tickets to the show, My aunt and uncle manage the Poco store there and they asked me if I already had tickets and I replied yeah i got awesome ones :P But anyway, I think in the music community around Vancouver the concert is being advertised!

I finally saw an add in the Georgia Straight, 4x5", so a decent size.  And also a phone interview with MM.

What worries me is that when I go to Tickemaster and enter 2 tickets in every price range, to see how good the seats that are still left are, there are still a lot of great seats.  I get the feeling that the venue will struggle to get to even 50% capacity (2,000) and that would just suck and they'll never come back.  In Seattle they had to move to a bigger venue, in Vancouver it feels like it's too big and not even worth their time cuz it won't fill.

I really hope I'm wrong and can sell it out but "I have a bad feeling about this."

If you go to the venue's website, you can see it's mostly full.

Also I saw some ads on Commercial Drive the other day.

Can't wait!!

I was going to suggest posting photos of ourselves here so we can try and meet up at the show but I figured it would be better to just post in this thread when you're here and say where you are (ie. I'm near the big stairs by the merch booth wearing a pink hat) and then maybe we can meet people that way.

Anyway, that's what I'll do when I get there.

I'm in row 9, Myung side. I'm incredibly handsome...no...

I have no idea what I'll be wearing.

Thanks for the link. I checked TM yesterday and there were sigle tickets on row 6... I don't know how is that possible with what seems to be closed to sold out show.

Well, in the business, 90% is considered "sold out." But 'sold out' doesn't necessarily mean no tickets left. Either way, it's looking like it's going to be a full house, and I cannot wait! :tup

Opening for another band counts as "being here" since they did actually play here.  So, yes, this is only their 3rd time being here.  I just hope we, as fans, can show up and bring it.

Killer show and I can't say how awesome it is to see them having SO MUCH FUN on stage!  We tried to meet with other DTFers but it just wasn't in the cards.  Next time we'll have an actual plan, right?

@Spidey
I could have gone to Seattle but I've been sick lately and didn't feel I could make the drive.  Next time for sure, or you could always come up here.  :)

JR signed my iPhone!  Here's a really lame photo:

OK, PetFish, I thought we were together, well, we were :) I was the one sticking with Mike backstage and giving him a hug (couldn't help it  :blush) AWESOME show! I really can't be happier that this! James was phenomenal as everybody else!
Setlist #2 for the record.
bosk, my husband did some pictures of the opening, it was a cute cartoon with them fighting some ugly powers, taking the plane from the cover and getting on the stage. Sweet begining. Awesome set and show! Can't really say more now, I am dead :)

So who were you?  You got a picture?  It would have been nice to actually meet someone, but I guess we sorta did, and it's funny that we were both there but didn't know it.

Yeah, funny :) :)
Well, there were only 2 girls in the room, a friend of mine who knows Jordan and he was kind enough to give us all passes, so she stayed with him. And me, that was such a fangirl around Mike  :blush So, I was around him most of the time, if you remember the small circle we had :) I have pictures, yes, but there are my friend in there, so I don't feel like posting them here. I'll PM you the link.
Did you manage to meet the rest when they were going out? Seems some of the people we met on the way out were patient enough to meet them, which is great!
Title: Re: 2011-09-28 - Queen Elizabeth Theatre - Vancouver, BC
Post by: PetFish on September 29, 2011, 04:57:20 PM
So funny.  I should have just said out loud "anyone here on DTF"?  It would have been a lot easier.  Next time we'll hug it out.  I didn't wait outside by the bus, it would feel weird to meet them and then meet them again, like I'm a stalker or something.  But I *still* have yet to meet JM.  He's elusive.

I also always make it a point to spread the wealth and take a different friend who likes DT whenever they're here (I'm buddies with JR and I get 2 guest passes to any DT show I want to attend).  It's the least I can do for my good fortune.  Still waiting for karma to come back to me but at least I have a clear conscience.

Here's a few more shots:

Me and my friend Andre (his first DT show):

Sweet pictures :) :) I hope you got my message, I know you will easily recognize me :)
Great that you are always bringing new friends and expose them to the band!
And yeah, next time we need a better plan, so we can meet. Hopefully that will happen SOON!

P.S. That's very cool from Jordan! We got our tickets during the pre-sale in early Aug and a few days ago my friend told me about the backstage thing. Overwhelming. I am a fan since 92.. go figure :)

Dream Theater were amazing last night. That was easily the best show I’ve seen them play. Although I was disappointed that they didn’t play Outcry, the set list was excellent, and much more dynamic than on the last two tours. Fantastic!

Hey Guys, Just got back in town. I live in Prince George, BC, I made the drive down there, best decision of my life, The best set imaginable, it was my 4th time seeing DT and the only song I've seen before last night was Pull Me Under. Mangini was the star of the show for me (that might just be because I'm a drummer) His solo was mind blowing, my jaw was on the ground the whole time he was just insane. The stage was awesome. James was awesome he sounded like studio quality if not better! Wait for Sleep and Far From Heaven was an awesome little break in the intensity of that awesome set. My personal favourite was Build Me Up, Break Me Down. I still have no voice at the moment because I sang at the top of my lungs for every song. Ugh so much to say about it but I don't take up a whole page on this thread. Lets just say I can die a happy man now! Thank you Dream Theater for such an amazing experience!

Post by: InfraredDream on September 29, 2011, 10:05:21 PM
Love your review :) Mike was a highlight for me as well. I've been watching his solos for months now, but seeing it only meters away was so much more intense! And the smile while drumming in such a speed... beyond words!
One thing that hit me as well was the contact with the audience, the eye contact, the joy and the smiles on their faces. As well as the contact between them on the stage.
Songwise, Breaking All Illusions killed me! Can't say it was the best as there were many great ones. But this song is something else.
Agree for James' voice, so beautiful. Wait For sleep was a treat live!
I know I am repeting myself and others, but it was amazing :)

Well, I'm 6'8" and I can only imagine what would Dream Theater guys look like standing next to me, especially MM. If I ever get the chance to have a photo with one of them, we'll have to sit down.  :lol

EDIT: And yeah, someone should do the captions for that group photo. I guess I'll be the one to get the ball rolling with an easy one:

I really like this shot, someone should caption what they're thinking:

I'm a little sad.  The guys have been tweeting/posting about how great and awesome and crazy the last few crowds have been but they didn't say anything at all about us Vancouver fans.  :(

When I saw "sad" I was about to say "me too" as I miss them already. After living with the anticipation of the show for 2 months, now it's over... :(
But, you are not right, both JP and Jordan posted about Vancouver the day after the show as they do with every other show. I think it is great they do it! And there was a part about us in the documentary movie as well.
JP before the show: Seattle rocked last night! Thanks so much everyone. First Canadian show in a few hours up in Vancouver.
JP after: Thanks for a great night Vancouver! So glad to make it out to your beautiful city once again.

Jordan before: Seattle- what a wonderful time we had playing for you! Thank you for that incredible evening. Vancouver, you are next!!
another one: Vancouver- are you ready to ROCK with us? 25 minutes until showtime!
and after: It was a fantastic night (as well as a great day) in Vancouver. From having lunch on the water front with Rob Perkins, to our all out rocking for some of the greatest DT fans on the planet. I loved the smiles on everyones faces. Thanks so much Vancouver. You always make it memorable!

So, no other reason to be sad than the fact we won't see them again soon :(
