This might be one of the TOP 10 prog metal albums this year, really. Imagine a rock opera in the vein of Ayreon, but more diverse and with more balls. Great musicianship, great singers great production! Highly recommended!!

FLAMING ROW is an international band project formed by the German musician Martin Schnella (Steel Protector, Cast In Silence) in 2008. His original idea was to create a concept album with many different musicians, especially singers, female and male. Schnella wrote a lot of music for FLAMING ROW and put it together to complete songs. Because of his big influence of different styles of music, FLAMING ROW does not represent just one genre. So there is a mixture of prog metal/rock, mainstream rock, metal and powerful ballads inside FLAMING ROW.
To complete the idea, Schnella asked his dear friend Kiri Geile (Steel Protector) to join the band. Kiri’s task was to write a story for the concept. Within some months both completed the story “Elinoire”, a drama about a young British family, together and wrote lyrics for the different characters in the story.
The recording sessions started in late 2008. Almost all of the music was recorded until the end of 2009. A lot of friends and local musicians supported Geile and Schnella by joining the band. Also to the core team of FLAMING ROW belong drummer Niklas Kahl (My Inner Burning, Cast In Silence) and keyboard/sax player Marek Arnold (Toxic Smile, Seven Steps To The Green Door, Stern Combo Meissen). Schnella played guitars, most bass guitars, some keyboards and contributed lead and backing vocals.
In late 2010 he got in contact with Gary Wehrkamp and Brendt Allman from the American progressive-metal band SHADOW GALLERY and asked them to join [in] with some additional guitar/keyboard solos. Both liked the music and became a big part of FLAMING ROW. Wehrkamp also did a lot of lead vocals and took part as one of the characters. Together with Brendt Allman he added many backing vocals. Billy Sherwood (Circa, Yoso, Ex-Yes) also provided some lead and backing vocals.
The German guitar player Ali Neander (founding member of the RODGAU MONOTONES, session guitar player for Xavier Naidoo, Sabrina Setlur …) added some guitar solos, too.
To take over the last free character-role Jimmy Keegan, who is the tour drummer/backing singer for SPOCK’S BEARD (also Kenny Loggins, Santana…), joined FLAMING ROW and did some vocals.
Schnella is very proud of this development, because all these musicians have been his idols since his childhood. Thus FLAMING ROW has become now an international band project.
The story of “Elinoire”: It is about a young British family. Lea and Adam Baltwin are in the prime of their lives, having great jobs and living in prosperity. Lea becomes pregnant. But during the birth of their daughter Elinoire, Lea dies. Adam never overcomes the sudden death of his beloved wife and lays the blame on Elinoire. Over the years he cannot build up an ordinary realationship to Elinoire. Adam’s father Cyrus Baltwin takes over the role of the father figure. But after some years some true facts about the previous life of Lea are revealed. Was Lea’s death really fate ? The story is told by the real characters, their emotions (love, rage…) and some virtual ones (Time, Destiny, Death, Spirit ...). More than 30 musicians and 15 different singers, female and male, perform on this album and the roles of the story.

Wow, nobody?? Believe me, this is great stuff.
-
I'll check this out! Sounds interesting
-
Oh fuck, I had talked to Gary about this awhile back and since had just forgotten about it, thanks for posting it, I'll be sure to check it out.
-
Just listened to the trailer. Seems worthy of more investigation.
-
Just ordered, and I went above my usual allowance for a CD, so this better be good.
-

$16 is above your allowance?
You're just pissed he said he had a subtle jab at AAJ.
-
I generally don't like to pay more than $15 shipped.
And this was nearly $20 shipped.
-
Have you got it yet, Nick?
-
Yes, and it is incredible. I had hoped it would be good, but this has exceeded my every expectation.
It's the same basic concept as Ayreon's The Human Equation, but for the most part the albums don't sound anything alike, and the music on this album is just pure win. This may actually stand as my album of the year right now.
-
Care to write a review in the near future? Your review of Victims of the Modern Age compelled me to pick it up (months ago), and it's now one of my favorites (and currently getting a lot of 'spins' from my iPod).
-
I would like to, but I have some other reviews I'm kinda bound to do first. I shall try my best to get around to it though.

:hat
Guess it sometimes pays off to spend some more bucks, eh? Glad you like it - and I'll forward it to the band!
-
Is there anywhere I can stream the album?
The trailer sounded awesome and all, but I'm not sure if I'm willing to pay - limited budget and all - if it's not really good. I needa try it at first :(

Hey, I've gotten albums that are as good for $2 in clearance bins, that's not the point. :p
I don't know when I'd be available and able, but let me know if either the main guy or gal would like to do an interview, assuming their English is good enough.

Here's part 1 of a long documentary: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KHsQztnhi9s
Part 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dwkzFOGJ4do
Part 3: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0J2BZqTtJpI
English-speaking peeps might have fun with the German accents. :hat
I'll post links to the other parts as soon as they are online. During the release party, I got to see the whole thing. Very funny at times, a longer segment with the guys from Shadow Gallery and other participating artists.
The album is best available here:
https://www.cdbaby.com/cd/flamingrow (or in Europe: https://www.ppr-shop.de/epages/62161184.sf/de_DE/?ObjectPath=/Shops/62161184/Products/PPR-005 )

Read thread title as "Flaming Lips." Got excited, then was very disappoint.

Get the album. That will fix your disappointment. It's phenomenal.
Will check th vid ou later

Can't wait till I get home!

Ok. I listened to the album.
Best album of the year by far far far far.
-
I added part 2 in the OP. :metal

Cool...
just checked iTunes, and this is available for $10. Although, it is nice to have the sleeve, and the lyrics lined up to the characters.
-
Very fun to watch - especially the montage of Do You Like Country Grandpa.
This disc is getting better with every spin.
-
More like...The Flaming Homer.
-
Two topics merged.
-
Initiation Fugato reminds me of exactly like prog.
-
Part 4 of the documentary - including Gary Wehrkamp & Brendt Allman of Shadow Gallery: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HGeJ75NfgIw
-
I could totally see Nightingale's Chirp being played on rock radio, it's such an awesome track too.
-
The CD is on back order. Will watching this documentary spoil anything? My inclination is just wait til I have the CD, but I might find myself with a spare hour to kill sometime soon.

It's going to spoil a bit, I mean - you see the creation process of the songs and stuff. I think it's better if you've heard them before.

That sucks Mason. I don't think watching them will totally kill the vibe. There's only one song as I recall that you get the whole run from (track 6... Do You Like Country Grandpa). Otherwise, you just get a feel for all the instrmentation.
Did you order it from cdbaby, or ppr-shop? I got mine within about a week from ppr-shop.
-
Backorder on cdbaby. Can you send me the ppr-shop link please?
-
It's right at the top of the thread. Good news, "Product is in stock"
-
Doh.
Ouch...$24. I'll wait until after the DT concert. I got a ton of music coming in the next week anyway, but I will get around to getting this.
-
Part 5 of the docu: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OWu9pZbBSJ0
-
Love seeing the behind the scenes to this. Gives one so much more insight to the story and characters. Makes listening to it that much better.
-
Part 6 of the docu: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1T7Hf2YjCTk&feature=share&mid=508
And here the 6th part of the Making Of Elinoire which again includes the singers.
It's the longest part and it shows detailed studio work while the vocal recordings and especially the backing vocals of Martin Schnella and Kiri Geile.
Have Fun! :-)
-
Will check it out later.
DTVT, did you ever get this?
-
They just shipped my copy.
-
You are in for a treat!!!
-
My copy came in today. Will post thoughts after I give it a few spins.
-
This album is great. It's sad and pathetic that only about 5 of us own it.
-
No kidding... I'm so thankful ich bin started this thread, and thankful that Nick knows Gary... cuz if not for Nick's endorsement, I likely wouldn't have shelled out the $30 or so for it that I did. It was more than worth it.
-
Here's the last part of the documentary: https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=Z9JQXajIEaA#!
Make sure to watch till the end! ;)
-
Oh, I will. Thanks ibb. I can't wait until it's my go 'round for "Album of the Week". hint hint, wink wink.

The First Live Show of Flaming Row
Hi fans,
as promised, Flaming Row will do their first live gigs in 2012! We will present excerpts of our first album “Elinoire”.
The first show is confirmed:
14.04.2012 in Rüsselsheim (Das Rind) – GERMANY
It’s a pleasure for us to play together with Haken from Great Britain.
It’s is not really clear who will be part of the Flaming Row live band. Beside Kiri and myself I can confirm Marek Arnold on keys/sax and Niklas Kahl on drums. At present we talk to some of the singers who could divide all the vocal parts. After the line up is fix, we will let you know! It will be a big challenge for us all to perform the stuff live, but it will also be a lot of fun!
You can order the tickets here:
https://www.adticket.de/index.php?option=com_adevent&view=ticket&id=132968
:getoffmylawn:
DAMN I wish I was German now.
-
Hehe, sorry... ;)
It's becoming a tour, btw:
14.04. Rüsselsheim, Das Rind
30.04. Aschaffenburg, Colos-Saal
01.05. tba
03.05. Hamburg, Logo
04.05. Oberhausen, Zentrum Altenberg
05.05. Mannheim, 7er Club
06.05. tba
-
Not fair!!! If there's ever a bootleg, you need to make us aware.
-
Well, I'm quite sure that someone will be recording the first show. I'll let you know.
It'll be interesting to see how they pull it off live.
-
Are they planning on doing the whole album? Or just "exerpts" as their site says?
-
Bumping this thread because one of my facebook friends recommended this album to me and I bought it a few days ago and have been listening to it pretty much non-stop ever since.
HIGHLY recommended stuff. :tup
-
Are they planning on doing the whole album? Or just "exerpts" as their site says?
They played almost the entire album. Gig time was around 1 hour. I have a live recording and might even get my hands on a DVD from the debut gig. It contains some sillyness and mistakes, but overall, it was a highly impressive concert.
Lemme know if you are interested.

YES, YES, YES, YES!!!!!!!
Barry, nice of you to join the ranks of the Elinoire appreciator's. My album of the year for 2011. Still gets regular rotation.

DO WANT.

Okay, couldn't locate the DVD yet, gotta ask the promoter again. I know that there was someone filming the gig.
But here's the audio: https://rapidshare.com/files/1308754561/Flaming_Row_-_Live_in_Rüsselsheim.zip (copy the link).
Please note that it's an audience recording, so the sound quality is not very good.
You can also find some live clips on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=flaming+row+r%C3%BCsselsheim&oq=flaming+row+r%C3%BCsselsheim&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&gs_l=youtube.3...20746.24367.0.24781.17.15.2.0.0.0.161.1674.2j13.15.0...0.0.hUDQqW0O1_Y
I'll let you know when I found the DVD.
-
too bad Rage of Despair volume was so low. They look like they're having a ball! Damn, Initiaton Fugato must've been tough vocally to pull off.
Hope you can get the DVD.
-
IBB... care to translate what was posted a couple of days ago? Sounds like Kiri is not going to be as heavily involved?
-
Martin also posted an English version on Facebook:
Hi Flaming Row Fans,
because of different reasons Kiri Geile decided to deliver her part in being the 2nd head of Flaming Row. This wasn't an easy decision for her, but the best one for the band, because her top priority will be her family and her job. She realized that she cannot spend so much time in organizing for Flaming Row.
But she will continue in writing the new story.
Martin will be Flaming Row's main head in the future.
So we found out that this will be best for the band.
Martin
-
Time for updates on the next album. Hard to follow everything, since Martin posts in German... ya know, being German and all :lol. But from what I can tell:
Simon Moskons from Cryptex will be singing
Johan Hallgren (ex PoS) will be singing
Album title is Mirage - A Portrayal Of Figures
Hopefully it's out in early 2014!! :fingerscrossed:
-
Ted Leonard of Spock's Beard and Enchant is actually recording his vocal parts for the upcoming Flaming Row CD "Mirage - A Portrayal Of Figures". He will add some very emotional moments and high range vocal parts!
It is a pleasure to me to welcome him!
This just keeps getting better!!!!
-
The list of guest vocalists is getting more awesome every day. I'm really looking forward to this one!!
-
Johan Hallgren (ex PoS) will be singing
WHAT
-
YES, I KNOW. THERE IS NOTHING YOU CAN DO TO HELP ME NOW
-
Johan Hallgren (ex PoS) will be singing

I think it means that Johan will be performing some of the vocals.

Wow, this is looking really good again. And it's not like big names are needed. They proved, much as Ayreon did with their first release that names mean nothing if you know what you're doing.
And I even have a Cryptex CD, so that guy won't be completely new to me.
-
Yeah, I went and listened to that album just this week. I remember (and had jotted the bands name down) of a Cryptex song you played on WPAPU once. Not bad. Liked his voice. Musically, they were just ok.
-
I just bought the digital version on CD Baby.
-
OMG.... I think I'm getting a prog-boner. Just saw on FB:
Just had a great time recording for the next Flaming Row with Martin Schnella and Kiri Marie ! —
Magali F'n Luyten!!! Like I didn't need enough reasons to be super excited about this album.

And just when you thought this couldn't get any better!!!
Today we will announce the last Guest Appearance for the new album "Mirage - A Portrayal Of Figures".
I am very happy to say, that Arjen Anthony Lucassen, the mastermind of Ayreon, plays a guitar solo on one of the songs. It is more than an honour to me. He also made compliments to the parts of music he heard and joined playing on it.
Further news about the release and pre-order will follow later.

I've only listened to Elinoire twice so far, and I definitely need a few more to fully digest the whole thing. But, first impressions are quite good, I like it already and I imagine it only getting better with subsequent listens. The next album will be a first day purchase, most likely.

No fair, she has the advantage of being several hours ahead of us.
-
Not to mention probably still connected first hand to Martin and Kiri! She's probably had the tune for a few weeks!
-
You wouldn't believe the things I've had to hide from you for months :lol
Things I'm dying to say dammit :(

Wow, killler tune. Can't wait for this one!!!

Can't wait for this, kinda insane how many people are included on this album, but I suppose it was like that on the last one as well. This is a project that really deserves to take off, and I hope they do.

Not having to plop down $20+ to have it shipped from Germany would help it take off. Nem, tell them to get their CD on amazon.com!

True... I bundled it with an order of Steel Protector/Metal Will Never Rust (Martin/Kiri's first band) to help justify the 28€ price tag.
-
Okay, the limited double CD will only be available through the label in Germany ( https://www.ppr-shop.de/ ).
The single CD will probably be available at Kinesis ( https://www.kinesiscd.com/storeframe1.htm ), Syn-Phonic ( https://synphonic.8m.com/catalogs.htm ) and Lasers Edge ( https://www.lasercd.com/ ). CDbaby will sell the CD for 16 $ ( https://www.cdbaby.com/ ).
Downloads will be available much later.

Already bought the album (did this yesterday), bu I purposely haven't heard any of the teasers. I just expect Martin Schnella to give us amazing music regardless. Very much looking forward to the record!
-
I just got Mirage - A Portrayal of Figures in my mailbox!! Very excited to listen to it, will do so soon! :caffeine:

Let me guess - the first thing you did , before even thinking about playing it , was to make sure your name was up in lights in the liner notes ;D

Well, my name is in there indeed. Saw a couple of other familiar ones as well ;)

Yup, and payed an arm and a leg.
-
Mine was 22 Euro shipped to Australia which I didn't think was that bad.
-
Mine was €28... but that also included the Steel Protector album from Martin that I've been wanting for a while.
-
Mine was ~21€, shipping to Russia. Needless to say, it hasn't arrived yet and I honestly don't expect it to for at least one more week, if not two.
-
Got mine yesterday and after one listen: :eek :eek :eek :eek :hefdaddy :hefdaddy :hefdaddy  :hat :tup
-
I don't know how the Aussie and Canadian rates with the Euro are, but 22 Euro is 30 dollars.
I'll go a bit more for bands I really want to support, but that's over double what I typically pay for a single album.

You guys are so impatient. :lol
By the way, about costs, if I order CDs in Russian stores, I always pay ~20€+ for special editions like digipacks and stuff. It's cheaper to get them from the abroad, though the shipment costs are usually quite big, so at the end it's the same. Let's see, IQ new album cost me £19.67, Pariah's Child 18,52€, only Gamma Ray turned out to be quite cheap. So 20€ for Flaming Row? I'm in.
-
I may be impatient, but I'm not Russian it :neverusethis:

No connection, bro. I just pre-ordered like everyone else for this one :lol
-
By the way, I'm only two listens in now and this is already a contender for AOTY :tup
This is the kind of project that inspired my own. These songs were recorded in pieces all over the world and put together to make this album. The fact that it is recognizably a Flaming Row album did not escape my notice. It ain't easy to pull that off when you're working with multiple musicians across several different continents. But I've gotta tell you, this album definitely shows that with the right person(s) mixing and producing, geographical proximity is not an obstacle to creating a cohesive-sounding prog album.

I'll go a bit more for bands I really want to support, but that's over double what I typically pay for a single album.
And for me... FR is one of those bands.
FR is one of those bands for me as well. I'd happily throw a few extra bucks there way. But when it's over double the normal price, and all I have to do is wait to get it at regular price... then I wait.
-
We pay double out here for everything anyway (even digital files, which companies like Apple have trouble explaining) so for me - even if it hit the stores (which it won't) - I'd have been paying more anyway.......probably $40.
-
Barry, fair or not, I blame you for the expectation that this album would be waiting for me when I got home today. And it wasn't, so I blame you for my disappointment.

On my second listen now - great stuff!! :hat
The label boss (my buddy Oliver Wenzler) highly recommended to listen to the instrumental album, but I want to listen to the regular album twice first.
-
Did my 3rd listen at the gym this morning. I hope you guys all get your copies soon.

I got my copy 10 minutes ago.
ich bin besser - Please pass along to your friend at PPR that I am very happy that they took measures to ensure international backers got their copy around release day (I got mine a day after because I live in a rural area). It's that level of care that will guarantee my repeat business, and my vocal support for future projects sound unheard.

The instrumental album kicks ass. :metal
-
This thread got quiet. Maybe it is for the opinion I am about to say, and no one else wants to say it.
The new album didn't get a "FUCK YEAH" from me like the first album did on first listen...or second...or third...or fourth...or fifth...but somewhere around the tenth listen the needle moved past the "above average" mark.
It's good, but nothing has grabbed me as much as some of the parts of Elinoire. I'm not saying it's bad, but it's not on the same level or Elinoire even if that is a completely unfair expectation and comparison to make. It's kind of like saying Da Vinci's Madonna Litta isn't as good as the Mona Lisa.
-
Well, maybe if the mailman would deliver my f'n copy, I'd be able to voice an opinion.
You are a notoriously difficult person to impress Doc, so I'll take your input with a couple of grains of salt.
-
Well, maybe if the mailman would deliver my f'n copy, I'd be able to voice an opinion.
Pretty much. :yeahright
I've been listening to Aim L45 on Youtube almost every day though. I'm really liking that song a lot.
-
Still trying to get my head around the conceptual aspect of it, but I am officially in love for sure. Pictures is a hauntingly beautiful song, so far my favorite, but the two epics really haven't settled in fully yet either. I love the folk aspects, and think they are making the most of it to really develop that initial "frontier" setting around which to develop the story. I got to bust out the John Wesley review tomorrow, then I will really commit some serious listening to this one.
Oh, and Maggy just fucking kicks ass. God I love her voice so damn much :heart :heart :heart
(just found out the other day she will be touring with Beyond the Bridge as the female lead :omg: )
-
So far my favourite of the album is Journey to the Afterlife, I think. I love the happy, upbeat stuff in that song. The epics come second, but I probably need some more listens before I can be sure of this.
-
The epics took me until the 5th listen to start clicking. It's a dense album. I guess I am going to have to go back and spin their first one some more because I liked it, but I find this new one more interesting.
"Journey To The Afterlife" is probably my favorite song too. Probably.
-
Here are my tentative rankings of the album, just to get some discussion going again. Feel free to disagree, it's pretty difficult to rank the tracks properly, as they're all very good. From favourite to 'least':
Journey to the Afterlfe
Memento Mori
In Appearance - A Portrayal of Figures Part 2
Burning Sky
Pictures
Mirage - A Portrayal of Figures Part 1
Aim L45
Alcatraz
-
That's interesting. I think I prefer the first epic to the second one, but only by a slim margin.
Not sure what my favorite track is yet, but "Journey To The Afterlife" and "Aim L45" are the early favorites.
-
Only listened a few times (thanks to RJ helping me out), as my CD didn't arrive until yesterday. So, now I'll be able to finally get a proper listen in with the liner notes to absorb the story. I'll have to report back after the weekend is out.

Guess that was a hell of a long weekend!!! Ok, so now that I've listened for months, I'm torn on this. Obviously, with my love for Elinoire, it was highly unlikely for this to top it, but I think it fell a little short of expectations. Here's why I'm torn. Musically and vocally, this is awesome. Lyrically, it's good, but not great. The story, however is killing me. Where Elinoire walked that fine line of being a complex story with great characters, twists, and sub plots, I'm totally lost on this one. I can't figure out how how the lyrics contribute to the overall story that Martin summarizes:
The world is under siege by an alien force –The Minders. They have declared war on the earth because they know that the humans will soon destroy the “mighty equation” in space. Humanity has become intelligent and technologically advanced but lacks the imagination and wisdom to see the devastation they wreak. The Magistrate has decided to annihilate the entire human race before its greed and pursuit of power can reach beyond its own planet. They send devastating solar storms to snuff out all life on Earth. The last surviving human “elite” fight to liberate their world and vow to “turn over a new leaf.” But a brave soldier named John believes that they have a very different plan…
I love that story/concept, but can't follow the lyrics, the characters, the flow of the songs to get to this conclusion. Also hampering the album is that not only do you have vocalists playing multiple characters, you have an individual character voiced by multiple singers. When I hear Luyten or Leonard's voice, I don't know which character they are unless I'm following the liner notes.
Like I said... musically and vocally this is the shitz. As a concept, I'm as confused as a baby in a ripper bar. I almost prefer these as a collection of songs, not as a story. Who knows, maybe the rest of the trilogy will fill me in.
-
tbh, I have no idea what is going on Elinoire. Of course, I've never read the lyrics or tried to figure it out, but I love it just the same.
-

Oh man, it's one of my favorite stories ever. It's flawless... I find something new almost every time I listen to it.
-
Yeah, I find the story in Mirage easier to follow than Ellinore. I have pieces of it, but there are some holes in what is happening I haven't filled or only guessed at in Ellinore. Here is what I got:
Ellinore's mom got pregnant with Adam when she was younger and had an abortion. She married Ellinore's father, and died giving birth. I am presuming it is because of incompatible blood types, I forget what it is called but if a type A mother gives birth to a Tyne B child and vice versa, the second time it is potentially fatal to the mother but not the child. The father blames Ellinore for his wife's death and neglects Ellinoire. That's all I was able to figure out on my own.
New album is straight forward comparatively speaking. It's also just the first part of a three part story, so the bad guys winning at the end shouldn't be a complete surprise. [/spoiler]
-
You got the main part - Elinoire's birth causes Lea's death, and Adam blames Elinoire for that. But the rest, not so sure. I thought that Zac Jones was the father of the aborted child, and Adam's father knew but kept it from Adam all these years. I still to this day don't know what the real story is, and think there is a supernatural element, as the line from "Death" in Unearth the Truth "A single shot that hit the mark, Two birds with just one stone" suggesting that by aborting the first baby somehow also killed Lea however many years later.
Act 1 is pretty straight forward, but everything gets pretty murky after Rage of Despair. I also think that Zac could be Elinoire's biological father, and that is also some how connected to (and/or the reason for) Lea's death. Or Zac did something (poisoned) Lea to die during childbirth, and hence he is 'on the run' in the final part of A Place to Revive Your Soul. Either way, Adam's father is connected somehow as well "I let the cat out of the bag, I cannot bare this shame" "Death" is somehow intent on stopping the bloodline of one of or both the families - "I annihilate, the whole damn tribe".
Anyway.... I pickup something new pretty much every time, some nuance, some clue. With Mirage, I still can't even follow the flow of the story yet. I thought for a while that the ending is told in track 1, and that maybe the story is told backward as the tracks progress.
Many more listens this will take.
-
I might have had the names mixed up in Ellinoire, I was working from memory. My CD's are packed anyway.
As far as I can tell, the story is told linearly in Mirage. We get introduced to the characters and The Sleeper. The Sleeper infects one of the guys, and they are dealing with seeing him slowly waste over the course of the album. Remind me after I move, and we can continue both conversations.

So I've been binging pretty hard on Elinoire, and my god, what a fabulous album. Every time I listen to it, I appreciate it more, and I feel I've only scratched the surface.
The new one is great as well, but Elinoire is a masterpiece. Seriously, it's perfection, beginning to end.

Absolutely agree 100%

For about the first month I had the new album, I kept thinking, "it is very good, but clearly a step below Elinoire." But I keep coming back to the new album, and now I might even rate it higher than Elinoire. Musically, I think they showed growth and had a more experimental sound. Can't wait for the story to continue on the next album.

Yeah, saw that on my FB feed this morning. Will watch later.

Kiri Geile (vocals, lyrics) announced today that she left Flaming Row. She's looking forward to new projects.
-
Bummer. I recall her saying she was stepping back from the whole writing and stuff to just be a vocalist. Bummer that's gone now too. I was just listening to Elinoire the other day. Really like her sound.

New Flaming Row is coming this December!
There it is! The Frontcover of the upcoming Flaming Row album "The Pure Shine" - Album Release in december 2019
It was painted and illustrated by Isabeau Backhaus, who also did the drawings for Melanie and Martins "The Oblivion Tales". The artwork was made by Martin Huch again.
This time we did not write an own story for the album. We thought about some fresh ideas and we came to the conclusion that an already existing story would work better. Maybe you can figure out the story while looking at the Frontcover?
The PreOrder will start n the first november week. We will keep you informed about this very soon!

They translated the pre-order form, now it's way easier to do this. Just placed my order, can't wait to look for all the familiar names in the booklet

New album is up on band camp. I know what I'm listening to tomorrow morning!

I just heard a track from the new album. I don't usually come into a thread to talk about something I didn't like, but I don't know. I've seen them mentioned here from time to time, so I guess I thought I'd ask about them. I got a Flaming Row song in my roulette, which I thought was a really nice song. It had a beautiful for chorus but maybe on further listens the verses weren't doing it for me as much.
The song I just heard is called Jake's Destiny, which I liked way less. There's some beautiful acoustic stuff and all, but the vocals/melodies/lyrics... Something just seems off. Too literal maybe? "Jake went to the grocery store. They didn't have his favorite brand of chocolate milk. Oh no! Jake was very sad..." (With the word sad being sung kinda happy). Obviously these are not the lyrics but this is how I'm left feeling after the (very long) song is done.
Is there a different song I should check out? One where you might say "listen to song x or y, and if you don't like that, you're probably not going to like this band."
-
Well, lyrics have never been this band's strong suit, honestly. It's like they did some weird translations from German to English and didn't bother to check them with a native speaker. Some things come across as slightly.. odd, I think? This is more present on the new album, which I only was able to listen to this week. I only heard the full thing once, and I think musically there's a lot of good stuff in there, but also some stuff that doesn't flow really well. The song you're mentioning, Jake's Destiny, suffers from this too. The instrumental part that starts about halfway is quite great, but then the song ends, yet we still get that acoustic passage... Why on earth is that still the same track? It seems like they wanted to have 5 long songs, whatever the cost, because on some other tracks I hear very strange continuations as well.
The first time I listened to the album, I was thoroughly confused because of the Mirage theme in the first track as well. There's a couple other themes from that album on this one, like the 'In a world you'll never know, no-one can hear you pray' line, which I find a bit strange.
So, after one listen, I actually think this is Flaming Row's weakest album, even though it contains some very good parts. Elinoire remains their masterpiece so far and if you even like what you hear on this new album in the slightest, please have a listen to that full thing. It's glorious.
-
Jake what's the problem, we've got to get out

I agree with pretty much everything here, the bolded parts especially. The lyrics on this album - being an adaptation rather than their own original writing - are very VERY weak. Plus, the lyricist from the first two albums (Kiri Geille) had a falling out with the other two 'core' members of Flaming Row, and didn't contribute to this album... so there's that.
I'm very underwhelmed (again). Elinoire is God-tier to me. Like, the best thing DTF ever introduced me to. Mirage is really good (and was supposed to be the first in a trilogy, IIRC), aided by the appearances of Maggy Luyten and Ted Leonard. The guest spots on The Pure Shine are good, but the writing is a patch work of leftover ideas that should've been Mirage Part 2, and new ideas. I'll not likely pre-buy their next album.
-
So, apparently I forgot that I had listened to a song from this album already... :lol
I saw that Glynn Morgan was on the album last night, and remembered that I already knew that and had meant to listen to it a long time ago. So I did this morning - I'm just finishing it up now and was going to post something very similar to what I already posted in 2019. I usually have a good memory for this sort of thing so I guess... chalk it up to the pandemic happening right after and having other things on my mind? Anyway - my comments about Jake's Destiny pretty much applies to the whole album. Glynn brings some passion to his vocals but the album is kind of a pile of meh.
I'll listen to Elinoire like I probably should have done 3 years ago.
-
Totally man...Elinoire is a fucking masterpiece.

When I saw Martin and Melanie at ProgStock this past year they put on an excellent set I could not possibly complain about, other than the fact that they didn't do any of the Elinoire songs.

OK, so that was much much better. I don't know if I'm going to like it on the level of some of you, but I mostly enjoyed it and wasn't constantly checking the track to see if it would be over soon. :)

An acoustic set would have screamed for Do You Like Country, Grandpa? What a missed opportunity.
