Oh yeah! Getting the VIP package. Such a monumental time in their history, gotta take advantage. Already pre-ordered the Deluxe Collector's Edition of ADToE, so I'm shelling out roughly $450 for DT this time around. Should all be worth it.

Also, the acoustics in Massey should play really well with the band. Much more of an intimate venue than the Molson Amphitheatre.

Just got confirmation from a friend with connections at Massey Hall that my tickets are secured. Third time in 3 years seeing DT and I haven't seen Mangini play since 95 with Extreme. So pumped up right now and relieved I got a seat. Wish they had a second show and I hope they come around next summer to Molson Amphitheatre. The wait is going to be excruciating but worth it for sure.  :tup

I've seen many shows at Massey Hall. Dream Theater has been two of those shows.

MH is 100% guaranteed the best venue for any live performance. The acoustics are bar-none, and there's not one bad seat in the house. (Even the obstructed view seats are alright!)

I'm very excited for this show. I'm 9th row, Right Floor, Center.

Clearly you've never been in the third balcony.  I'm 6'2", and literally there is not enough room for my knees to sit straight.  Saw the TSO Beethoven's Last Night tour there a little over a year ago, and man, uncomfortable would be as politely as I could put it.  Built in the 1890's, I guess there weren't too many 6' people back then.

Otherwise, you're right, it's a fantastic venue.  Although I thought they'd be doing a bigger venue.  MH is only 2800 or so I think.  I know they're not gonna sell out the ACC or anything, but their past summer shows at the Amphitheatre filled the seats... and that's about 7000.
You must be right in front of me, I'm RCF, row J, seat 34.

I had the same thought, but Molson will be closed in October will it not? And other than that there arent too many bigger options that make sense.  :-\

3rd time for me with Dream Theater at Massey Hall. Thrilled to see them returning to such a beautiful venue. I was hoping for better seats, but I guess I shouldn't be complaining because it's already a great one. LCF G 15. (Furthest seat on the left centre.)

Wish I knew about the pre-sale password though.  :(

It's become a pretty regular thing at this point. Flew in for the Massey Hall shows on the ToT and Octavarium tours. I've seen DT 3 times outside of that as well in NYC and Montreal. I accepted at a young age that they were never coming near my home.  :(

So, the last few gigs in Toronto, they`ve covered a Rush tune (Camera Eye, Jacob`s Ladder and Passage to Bangkok).  Think they`ll do one this time around?  If they do, I`d love to see Cygnus X-1 - since they usually do an untraditional tune.

Not that far. You basically can't get further east where I am. Very few bands comes through here, and they're not typically winners...to be honest, I can't blame them. I've been to a handful of shows since we had a notable (for St. John's) stadium open somewhere around 2000 and turnout is often bad. (Granted just as many sell out.) But in 2001 I saw the Barenaked Ladies play to a practically empty house.
Just under a year ago the student union of the only university lost $100,000+ (due to mere stupidity) on bringing Snoop Dogg here for a show.
It's rough times. Thats why I end up traveling to see so many shows. I started when I was 14 and it's been steady go ever since. (Last show for me was PT @ RCMH, where I basically saw most of the members of DT!)

I could be wrong, but I feel like that was maybe a MP-driven effort. Would love to see more Ruah covers as per tradition of course.

So I say we meet at HMV 333 Yonge St. in the METAL section at the DT CD's at 5 30 or 6? Its about a 10 minute walk to Massey I believe. That will also give a little time to browse HMV  :tup

Well the local scene in NL is extremely active and successful. I play in a band (We're releasing our second CD this fall and will be touring with it as far as Ontario) and everyone in the local scene is very supportive of one another. There are lots of shows happening regularly all along George St. It may be small, but very very active— and even with good music! In that sense, the local scene here is very fortunate.

Quick personal plug time:
Catcher. (We're not prog... Maybe some influence, but it's more just good rock.  :lol Not the shitty kind.)
Technically, it's not really my band per se. It's a bit of a NIN/one-man-band type deal. But I've settled away a spot as regular bass play in the live band. It's cool though, I had been seeing countless Catcher shows for over two years before I became a "member".

If you're interested, there's a free EP available [www.catcher.ca] that was recorded live off the floor one afternoon maybe a year and a half ago and previews a song from the new album. When dates are finalized, I'll maybe make a plug about it in the musician's forum.

Back on topic:

Somebody who knows Massey Hall well, which seat is better C11 or G15? I'm interested in a nice spot in front of Myung this round.

I'm good to grab a pre-concert pint anywhere within a few minutes of Massey.  I'll probably drive down nice and early to avoid the rush-hour traffic into the city, and work from a coffee shop somewhere.

What time to meet?

3 Brewers Microbrewery is right around the corner and is amazing. I'm very familiar with the area, as I used to live 10 minutes walking distance from massey hall.

My first post and all I want is BAI in the Toronto Setlist.  No Rush songs required, I'd rather have another DT song.
Can't wait.

I just got myself a ticket for Massey Hall. Will be my time ever seeing a live band. I am pretty excited!

Im a few hours out of Toronto, plan to be in Toronto by 6 at least, gives me an hour to get some food and then get to Massey Hall for 630 or 645.

What do I need to know about this venue in particular or about seeing a band?

This is an entirely new experience to me.

Trivium doesn't start until 8, so no need to be at the hall that early.  It's a great venue for a concert.  Expect it to be the loudest thing you've ever heard in your life if this is your first concert.

I was told I had to be an hour early to get the ticket. So I would have to be there at least at 7. Or is that something they just say for legality? Would my ticket be unavailable if I showed up around 715 or 730?

I've never picked up a ticket at will-call, so if the venue is telling you be there an hour before hand, I'd go with that.

Wheres the best place to park for Massey Hall?

Im from out of town (actually live in a small town, so I dont go to big cities like TO very often). How much should I be looking to pay for parking? Wheres the safest place to park (dont want my car broken into or stolen, boy do I sound like a small town boy).

There are a few lots and garages in the area! Parking will likely be an added fee..

Try the underground parking at the Eaton Centre or Dundas Square.  Probably around 10-20 dollars, not sure.

Probably better to plan for $20 or $25.  The area that Massey Hall is in is pretty busy... quite a few theatre's in the area, lots of 'night life'.  So long as you don't stray too far east of Yonge Street, you'll be fine (safety wise).  Lock the doors, don't leave anything noticibly valueable in view.  Just use common sense.

Haha, don't let that scare you too much. I had a friend that lived RIGHT at Dundas and Sherbourne and I walked out of the at all hours of the night. Not as bad as it's made out to be.

Yeah, not trying to scare anyone... just don't go looking for $10 parking out of the way in down some side street.  There's lots of good indoor and outdoor spots around Massey Hall.

I live outside of Toronto and I'm heading to the show. My advice is, if you're coming off the 401, to park at either Yorkdale Mall (if you're coming from the west) or Finch station (if you're coming from the east) and taking the subway to Dundas or Queen station, both of which are close to Massey Hall. It's free to park at the subway stations and it'll cost you $3 each way. It takes a little bit longer but it saves the hassle of driving in the city.

Just went on the Massey hall site and managed to score a seat on the floor. Row C, left centre. There was one more seat available then right next to mine. Though I'd put it out there if anyone is interested in 3rd row seating.

Also, because of this, I have a seat in row G centre section up for sale as well if the gold of row C had disappeared!
Send me a PM if you're interested.

Man you made my heart skip a beat for a moment. I thought you had news.
I'd say if there is anything like this, it'll get announced in the the new 24 hours if at all. I wouldn't have high hopes at this point though. That said, they've done signings in Toronto the last 2/3 times I believe, so I suppose it's still possible. They announced a similar thing in Montréal on PN09 the day before.

Depends if you want to spend coin or not.  CN Tower, Hockey Hall of Fame.  If you've got a car, you could head down to the Falls (only about a 90 minute drive).  Just be aware of rush hour.  Not sure if there's anything happening at the Metro Convention Centre of any interest.  Eaton Centre will kill some time.  Lots of good eats all over downtown.

Their set lists seem to have a pretty distinct pattern to them in terms of their encore song. They have been alternating, "Pull me Under" and "Under a glass Moon". Looks like we are getting Under a Glass Moon tonight in Toronto.

Based on their current cycle, this is what we should expect:

1. Bridges in the Sky
2. These Walls
3. Build Me Up, Break Me Down
4. Endless Sacrifice
Drum Solo
5. Ytse Jam
6. The Silent Man
7. Beneath the Surface
8. The Great Debate
9. On the Backs of Angels
10. Forsaken
11. Through My Words
12. Fatal Tragedy
13. Outcry
------------------------------
14. Under a Glass Moon

I would also expect to see a Rush song in there somewhere since they have done that the last couple times they played in T-O.

And Im confused how to get in there. You cant turn left going the one way, and it says u cant turn right going the other way, the only way is straight into it?

This is why I hate Toronto...

Thats probably where I will park, I just need to know how to actually get in there.

I think you're correct.... you go straight through Yonge into the garage from Shuter St.  I've never parked there, and it's been a while since I've been downtown.

Looks like you can go down Dundas to Victoria, turn right SOUTH, then turn right at Shuter and go straight into the parking garage.

Depending on which way you're coming along Dundas, you might be turning left!

1. Bridges in the Sky
2. These Walls
3. Build Me Up, Break Me Down
4. Endless Sacrifice
Drum Solo
5. Ytse Jam
6. The Silent Man
7. Beneath the Surface
8. The Great Debate  Outcry
9. On the Backs of Angels
10. Forsaken
11. Through My Words
12. Fatal Tragedy
13. Outcry  Breaking All Illusions
------------------------------
14. Under a Glass Moon

While I was looking forward to The Great Debate, I'll gladly take BAI over it.

Even when I went in thinking I knew the setlist. They still managed to change it, and I still managed to see Breaking All Illusions! Unbelievable show.

Nice meeting you, jingle.boy. Thanks for everything!

Unbelievable show. Front row, centre. Right in front of LaBrie and Petrucci. Petrucci made direct eye-contact with me at the end of Forsaken. Yeah!!!! That guy in the front there who was dancing/air-guitaring/fist-pumping way over the top...yeah, that was me. Haha. And what can I say about Breaking All Illusions? When they played Outcry earlier than expected, I began to get very suspicious, in a good way. Then the opening riff to BAI a few songs later. Night complete. Thank you Dream Theater, you've managed to surprised me yet again.

All were at the top of their game. Mangini is too good (refer to drum solo). The acoustic set was perfectly placed in the set. The ending of BTS flowed perfectly into Outcry. Just amazing.

Best setlist of the tour IMO. Having outcry and BAI in there was unbelievable! Never liked the great debate and thought it was a mood killer.

Everyone was on their game. Nothing more to say.

Setlist C ftw

Forgot to add some Neil Peart sections in the drum solo.

OH MAN WHAT A SHOW! Outcry AND Breaking All Illusions made my night, thats for sure!

Those two songs are amazing live, and everyone nailed it.

I loved Mike Mangini. So much energy put into his drumming, and Labrie nailed those high notes (anyone catch the scream at the end of BMUBMD and in the middle of UAGM?).

Good stuff all around.

I was mauled by a bear, nunchucked by a ninja, stabbed by a pirate, had a spell cast on me by a wizard, and was beaten by a genie while all my wishes came true. In short, the most amazing night of my life. Can't believe we got Outcry and BAI in one set. That was so killer. I would never have believed that this band could get better but they have. Such a difference in their stage persona it was unreal. I have no sufficient words to capture what I experienced tonight. I hope all of you get to see them. Left me breathless!

To cap off an already perfect night, all 5 members jumped off the bus to come and meet and greet the small crowd that hung around. I got to tell JP how I feel and what he has meant to me, and got a great pic with Mike whom I have idolized for 16 years since his days in Extreme. I was so overjoyed to see him again. What an amazing character. JMX was so gracious and a treat to meet. Told him he has to write more lyrics and that brought a big smile to his face. Jordan signed my iPhone case, and James was taking pics with everyone. What a joyous night I cannot believe it. I have nothing further to say that would be coherent other than what exemplary musicians and human beings.

Wow! Six out of nine songs from the new album, that's just frigging  :metal!!! Now if we could just get them to put in LNF and TITL in the same set (don't care about FFH) I'd be xtra happy (can ya tell I like the new album... a LOT...  ;D).

But congrats on getting to see a new set last night. I'm really excited to see what happens over here next year!

What a concert.  Can't say too much more that hasn't been said already.  Mangini is a thrill.  He's as animated as anyone else in the band - maybe the most.  I found myself watching him more than anyone else on stage.  James was dynamite, hitting a ton of killer notes.  Even at the end of the night, the last note from UaGM "Praying for time to disappeeeeeaaaaaaaarrrrrrr!"  Loved his pirate cloak that he had for the first few songs.  Petrucci is a beast.  Man, his pipes are huge.  And vocally... he just looks like he's having the time of his life with full-time responsibility for the backing vocals now.

As I mentioned, James introduced his mom right before Forsaken... she was about 6 seats away from me.  Tried to snap a pic, but it didn't work out so good.

Setlist was an absolute dream.  I was in heaven with Endless Sacrifice and Fatal Tragedy ... 2 of my top 3 favorite instrumental sections (Octavarium being my fav).  Outcry AND Breaking All Illusions.  Schwing!  When they played Outcry early, I was absolutely convinced BAI would be the closer, and went nuts when JP started the opening riff.

Man, what a show!  Evidently everybody already knows about the mysterious setlist C, but it was literally the best of both previous sets for me.  The acoustic set was a great breather, we got Outcry AND BAI in one set, and the better closer IMO in UAGM.  Absolutely amazing show!  Mangini is a gorram monster, and he just has so much fun!  He's constantly amazed at the huge crowd of people cheering for him.  He seems honestly overwhelmed by the whole touring thing and he has such a big goofy smile, he's like a puppy dog.  You can't help but love him.

That solo was beast. He had some pretty fast drumming and some of the beats he was laying down were super cool.

Then right into the Ytse Jam, without hesitation.

Man this guy is a beast.

Short story, I was with a friend who's not much of a DT fan. He enjoys petrucci guitar work, I sent him the new album so he could somewhat enjoy the concert. He was so amazed and the precision of the music. He was like "This is like note for note exactly like the recording"
Then he did the following, pulled out his iPhone during breaking all illusions and ran Shazam(tells you the name and artist of songs by recording a snippet of an album track). It actually recognized the song as breaking all illusions.

Note the FAQ on Shazams site:

Does Shazam work with live music?
Shazam only works with pre-recorded music - but it does work with recorded live sessions(I.E. Score or Budokan).

Once again DT surpasses humans beings.

This was the 4th time i've seen DT and without a doubt this was the best show they've put on. I've never seen the band so incredibly happy on stage and animated. I hate to be the devils advocate but frankly I think it's because MP is gone. He controlled the band in a lot of aspects and the way they presented themselves on stage was certainly one of them. JP jumping on top of his stands, getting on his knees in front of the crowd, JM actually smiled a lot and moved around on stage.

Labrie is getting fat.

Last night's was among the best DT shows I've attended. The set list was perfect, no complaints. Got to sit on Mangini's kit backstage right before the show, Mangini's drum solo and Outcry and Breaking All Illusions in the same set, unreal  :)

James voice is amazing especially on the acoustic songs. DT is more rejuvenated then ever before. I was floored by Mangini. After seeing him on stage, he really fitted in tight with the band. The crowd acceptance welcoming Mike into DT was amazing to see. He is the perfect replacement and here to stay. Met him after at the bus, amazing person as well as a drummer. When Petrucci did the solo on Breaking All Illusions, it was like I expected it to be. My jaw droppedd and I froze in amazement, just like I did on Razor's Edge  ;D

Backstage I got to meet a lot of the crew you've all seen in the DVD's. All of them were great. Met Petrucci at the bus, got my tourbook signed but no pic, phone battery went out. Arrggghh. Next time I hope.

Trivium, I really liked. They had the crowd going. Really nice guys too.  ;D

I had a great time, thanks DT!!!  :metal  :yarr  :hefdaddy   ;D

I'll be posting photos of myself with the band once I get them off my friends camera. Everyone (minus Petrucci) came out after the show to hang out. I had them all sign my ticket and got pictures, too.

James' mom and the rest of his family left out the back entrance too. It's nice to see their support!

Mangini talked to the crowd for a solid fifteen minutes. It was a blast to have witnessed him.

This was my ninth time seeing Dream Theater and I have to say that it was probably their most energetic. I've never seen the guys have so much fun on stage before. I was certain to not hear Breaking All Illusions - but what a thrill! I was ninth row on the right-side centre in front of Petrucci. The acoustics were phenomenal - as they usually are as Massey.

I wish all bands I saw live played there.

had to chime in and agree with you here.  MP's OCD and control issues were probaly stifiling everyone a bit.  i love MP to death, but it sounds like the guys are really enjoying themselves and having fun now.  seeing them soon in boston in a few days...can't wait!!   :metal

Good god, James Labrie was on motherfucking FIRE.  :flame: For reals.

That was by far the tightest Dream Theater show I've seen. Everyone was on their game and the sound was much better than the last two times I saw Dream Theater at Massey Hall. Perhaps it was just where I was standing, but I could hear everything perfectly.  :hat: Here's the view from my seat:
(https://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b69/Bluekaffeebanny/th_IMG_0967.jpg) (https://s17.photobucket.com/albums/b69/Bluekaffeebanny/?action=view&current=IMG_0967.jpg)

I'm not going to lie, I was almost a bit disappointed with the loss of The Great Debate, but ONLY because I was anticipating it. That said, in that same moment in the concert I realized that meant that they were playing Outcry and closing the set with Breaking All Illusions. And when they were playing BAI, the wound was healed in seconds.  :hefdaddy

@ johnnysuperfan

I was with Tim at the bus with you. I think I may have a photo of you just hanging around with Mangini.

petrucci came out, about 15 mins after a bunch of the crowd left ;)

Believe me, if I didn't have to both work and move the next morning, I would've stuck around to give their bus a wave goodbye.

But damn.

Until next tour, I suppose!

I uploaded a few snippets of some songs, sorry about the quality as they were taken from an iphone 3gs.

enjoy !

You were amongst the select few who were closer to the stage than I. Great seats.  :metal What a show. Still reeling.

Great pics!

Seems like JP was MIA after the show from all the reviews and what not from people who stuck around. I was contemplating it myself.

Do those of you who stick around for these kinds of things find that the band is a lot more open and willing to just have a genuine chat rather than the typical "meet and greet" stuff that people experience pre-show?

Having done both the VIP and waiting outside by the bus - I feel as if you have a more intimate experience with the guys after the show, rather than through the VIP. But I mean, it depends on them. Rudess was COMPLETELY exhausted and I really didn't want to bother him. But Mangini and LaBrie spent a LOT of time with us.

So with the VIP you're guaranteed snippets out of them. For after the show, it's completely by chance. Maybe even one of the guys won't come out?

On the other hand, the VIP treatment gets you some killer professional shots with the band. . .

I think DT should start doing their meet & greets via a fan club lottery  like Metallica does. They don't need the money at this point so i think it's more than the right thing to do.

I think the fact the band came out after the show to meet with us says so much. I am still in awe of that. JP coming out at the last minute almost made me faint (floppy salmon in the path of a bear). I wasn't expecting to see him but he went out of his way for us. They could have easily driven off and there was no reason for anyone to get upset if they did. Considering they had two more shows in a row it would have been understandable. They owe us nothing. Beyond that, we all got more than our money's worth from their performance. They absolutely deserve to get paid for VIP and those that pay deserve the perks. I would have paid for it myself but I have a friend who has a connection at the venue so I couldn't stall to secure my tickets and wait for VIP to go on sale. I got 6th row on JP's side so no regrets. At the end of the day Dream Theater is their 'job' and they should be paid for every aspect of it. Money is not a motivator for them. I wouldn't tell my boss not to pay my overtime because he has already paid my regular salary for so long. The last Metallica concert I went to I literally felt that money was their only motivation and I was being ripped off. A lead guitarist that cannot pull off his any of his own solos, God awful tone, and a drummer that half-assed or missed beats on the hard stuff because he was too out of shape to pull it off. Then there are the songs that never make the setlist because they are too hard to pull off live.Overpaid and underworked. Dream Theater the total opposite in all those respects.
