Question: What's the chance that floor is going to sell out? Planning to go to the box office maybe next Sunday to grab a floor ticket, but will just get it online if it'll sell out fast. Any advice?
-
A dramatic tour of events.
lol
-
Got my ticket, sec LL3 Row AA
-
I need to get my new glasses before this show!
-
I love that the description is on about Octavarium :lol
-
Got them, through Ticketmaster general public sale (went on this morning at 10)! 2 General Admission. Can't wait!!
-
I love that the description is on about Octavarium :lol

ITCHY CAN'T FACE THEY'VE MOVED ON AND RELEASED 3 MORE ALBUMS SINCE THEN.

Lucky guys in SF will surely see some new songs played for the very first time ever. Any speculation as to which?

I don't know yet!
-
:lol Tell your dad he needs to go. If he gets tired of the pit, he can come sit with me and H can go down in the pit with you for a while. Either that or...uh...you know, like, hypothetically...you and Sara could get back together and you could take her. Just sayin'.

I'll see if he's interested. Oh, something was wrong with the last part of your message, might be forum problem. You should get on that. Just sayin'.

I have no problem experiencing two seats at once.
-
I wonder if the setlist will change from what they're playing in Europe? I imagine it would, seeing as the album will be released by this point. Not that I mind the current setlist (I haven't seen anything except Tuscany).
-
History has been the summer festival run has been to get their stage chops back. The US leg, is where they play a full production set with all the new material they had planned. But with the recent turn of events, it will be a bit different.

Meaning....
-
Look at the last 4 tours. They started on the Euro. festivals doing shortened sets of mostly songs they are already comfortable playing. Possibly playing one new song (OTBoA this tour, ANTR last tour). When they come to the US they have their normal touring stage production with their lights, screens and PA. They will then pull out all the new material that they plan on playing. The last tour was a bit of an anomaly as is was Prog Nation only. The original plan was to do a more traditional leg after PN09. The IM thing came up, then we all know what happened after that. But look at the tourography for TOT, 8V and SC you will see what I mean.
-
Wait, so are you saying that this leg will or will not feature a significant amount of new material?
-
I would guess that the US leg will show at minimum 3 songs from the new album. As the tour goes on they might rotate in some more. But with the band stating the the set lists won't be changing much, this remains to be seen. We are in uncharted territory here.
-
Bought two tickets yesterday I am so happy. I got floor tickets row G1, seats 110-111. This will be my first DT concert, bringing a friend who doesn't know DT hope I get him into it.
Does anyone with experience with seeing DT know how the seating normally works? I got floor tickets assuming I'd be standing up but obviously they have row and seat numbers so we'll have chairs? Also for future reference is sitting up in the balconies a better experience or down on the floor?
What can I expect with Trivium playing before DT (concert length.) I hope DT plays for 2 hours.
-
For that venue, as I recall, it is a "standing-room only" pit in the very front, and then seated quite a ways back from that.

That's how it was when I saw them there on the Six Degrees tour, about 20 "rows" worth of SRO, then seats.

After party/dinner at your restaurant?
My place is a touch far from there, and might be closed after the show gets out. Dinner will definately be a no-go, but a casual gathering, maybe.
-
What's that, lonestar? You're going to prepare us food and bring it for a pre-show parking lot dinner?
-
What's that, lonestar? It's your day off? Go have someone cook for you, then come rock the fuck out with us at a killer concert. :metal
Thanks bud, will do. :tup
-
Well, coming from my neck of the woods, I'll pretty much be passing through your neck of the woods before crossing the Bay Bridge (yeah, it's a bit of a detour jumping off the freeway and driving all the way up University, but meh--details...). So, yeah, I'm all in favor of your suggestion. A bunch of us can just descend on the kitchen at the Clairmont a few hours before the show and cook you a killer meal on your day off. Just be warned--I may go heavy on the bacon.

LOL at the thought of five DTFers running around the kitchen while the Mexican linecooks have guns in their mouths because THE PINCHE SONG WON'T END CABRON!!!

:rollin
-
I used to do it to my cooks at another place. We'd take turns, and I'd put on some ten to twenty minute wankfest, and thrill at the sight of them becoming more and more uncomfortable. Good times. :lol
-
Nice. I can just see it:
Cooks: Okay, enough of this! We each only get one song. Got it? ONE SONG!
Lonestar: Uh...okay, fine. This one is called...Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence.
-
I always had lots of Yes on me at work too. ::)

Well, if you guys see a dude that looks like Neal Morse, yell out "lonestar". You will either get me or confuse the shit out of Neal Morse, it's a win-win.

Do you actually respond to Lonestar? If somebody yelled out Barto, it'd probably take me a couple of days to notice. "Oh, that's what that guy was yelling about. Damn."
-
Hey Dr. Barto! ;)

No, but at a DT show, my user name would probably stand out to me. This and two other forums are the only places I go by lonestar.
-
@lonestar, Bob, and F.W., what are your pre-show plans? Not sure what time I am getting there, or what the definite plans are, but wouldn't be adverse to meeting up with any of you fine folks ahead of time.
-
I have to see what my buddies plans are, he's driving, but I would be totally game for a meet up.

Do you have a dinner place scoped out?
-
Stop talking about food!!! I can't eat anything for another 17 hours!!
-
Why?
Also, if you still have your extra ticket, I may have a taker (Jack, whose house we jammed at that time). Let me know.

I'm having a procedure done tomorrow to "scope" things out... :\
I should know within the next hour if my dad can make it or not.
EDIT: My dad got the day off work, so he'll be joining me to the show. We're going to take BART to Powell station rather than deal with the parking situation there.
-
Hope this is the right thread.... I have to bow out on the show. Due to my heavy workload on the Neal Morse DVD I can't take the time off for the show.
I have 1 ticket lower balcony LL3 row AA (front row balcony stage right) for anyone who wants it. Pay what you can, the face value is 62.50
PM if interested.

Silence.... then the drums kick in and the shaman will unleash his throat singing then the crowd goes wild!

So what's the update on a meetup? My dad and I aren't able to get there too early, probably around 5pm. Considering I want to get a good spot up front, that limits the amount of time we'll have to venture around the city.
-
My buddy and I are planning on having drinks/dinner at Lefty Odouls, a hofbrau about 2 blocks from the Warfield. We are thinking of showing up there around 4:30ish. I think that's as good a place as any for a meetup.
-
I expect one of you to report back quickly with the setlist!
-
BOSK
Text me the setlist I'll be at my computer all day
-
I expect one of you to report back quickly with the setlist!
I'll probably have to check here to get the exact set myself. I am shit at remembering those things.

Well you better keep your "Oldtimers" in check for the night! We expect a report from you NoCal MoFo's by morning!!!!! :metal :metal :metal Have an awesome show guys!!!!!!! :metal :metal :metal :metal :metal :metal :metal :metal

Actually, would anyone like to text me during the show so I can update DTF song by song? I'm sure many people would appreciate it.
-
I can text ya man. It's a whole lot easier than trying to post on a forum while standing in GA.

Cheers, will hopefully still be awake for some of the show.

Anyone know someone who wants to go to this show but can't afford to? Want to bring some friends that are on the fence about DT? Any other reasons someone would want free tickets to tonights show?
It unfortunate, for me, I can't go tongiht.... but I really don't want these tickets to go to waste. So I want to give them (or offer them for a small 'donation' - let's say 30bucks for both?) to anyone who can pick them up in the South Bay today. Just PM me....
Hopefully someone can take these two GA tickets off my hands!!!!!
Thanks
WJ

Have fun tonite SF! Lucky bastards. I want detailed reports from the front! I want to know about the set/ sound/ production and performance! Will be watching this thread. thanks in advance

This! I want to be informed, and I want loads of videos to pop up on youtube tomorrow morning. And a bootleg would not be unwelcome, either. :tup
Anyways, have a dramatic one, folks :)

It's a custom DTF shirt. The pic is the BTS artwork.

NUGGETZ.
On a serious note, I forgot that the first show of the tour was tonight. When I remembered I scrambled to see what the setlist was. Thus, my current excitement :metal
-
General Winds has informed me that Operation Setlist is 90 minutes and counting. All bases stand by. All your base are belong to us.
-
I forgot they are on PST. I'm on EST so I figured it was wrapping up. Then I remembered CLOCKMATH: The Dissapointing Revelation
-
Yeah, I don't know what time it is ending, but I'm sure it'll be past when I usually fall asleep. But that is fine, it's the weekend.

Twas the last song I heard here live, as played by DT.
Enjoy the show boys!!!!
-
You Not Me just came up in my itunes while I'm sitting here waiting for updates. I think it'd be really cool if they did half of You Or Me, then a crazy jam, then end with You Not Me's chorus. Of course, pretty much everyone hates that song, so I hope you get something else at the show :lol
-
Dammit, I'm torn between following the concert threads or just getting surprised when they come to Atlanta. Either way, enjoy the show!
-
Here I am at a fab four show watching and waiting for a dt setlist update

5 am and I'm still up, I really should go to sleep but oh well
-
How much time 'till the band grabs the stage?
-
Should be in 40 minutes (when the next hour starts in whatever time zone youre in)
At least from what General Winds told me
-
...Rawwwwwwwwwwwwwk
;-))))
-
Is Trivium already on stage ? or is it Trivium that plays in about 40 mins ?
-
Considering that, if it is 11:31pm where I am and Cali is 4 hours behind me, making it 7:31pm there at the show, and the show started at 7pm, it must be true that Trivium have already taken stage!
-
I believe that the link on the first page said the concert starts there at 8.
-
I live a block and a half from the Warfield.....and, had to do homework tonight :(

I believe that the link on the first page said the concert starts there at 8.

-
Any word about the setlist?
-
General Winds has reported "Trivium on at 8, off at 8:40."
-
Trivium rocked it. Crew just unveiled Mangini's kit.
-
"All four bass drum heads have the album artwork on them."
-
Master of Puppets on PA. \m/
Twas the last song I heard here live, as played by DT.
Enjoy the show boys!!!!
I thought you were there with them!

I was JUST about to go to bed. Then I remembered this gig was happening and setlist information would be reported.
No more bedtime.
-
"There is an acoustic guitar on stage."
I wonder if that means that they're opening with On The Backs Of Angels.

OLOL!
Still no word from the general.
Might be waiting until the songs end so as not to impede enjoyment or something.
-
I was thinking that. Or they haven't started yet, he's been quick thus far with updates.
It's all good, just reporting in.

-
Can you get pics from anyone Jamesman?
-
Nice! Not totally shocked. Definitely could see that as a nice opener. Kinda glad they didn't follow their typical pattern with the opener.
-
Can you get pics from anyone Jamesman?
I can if they send them to me, but it would probably be best to just wait for the guys who actually went since they're gonna want to enjoy the show. Setlist should be sufficient, though I know you wanna see what the stage setup looks like
-
Any Myung Karate demonstrations going on?
-
Looks like I lost the pool. That's an awesome opener though :metal
-
BITS! YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!

Seems like they're about due for a new-album-song up next. Any guesses? I'd hope for either "Outcry" or "Lost Not Forgotten" at this point. Too early for FFH and/or BAI.
-Marc.
-
Hm.... It looks like so far, they took the original summer setlist, swapped out various songs for newer ones, but kept the same format, order, etc.

OTBOA, LNF, or Outcry at this point would help me out in the pool. I was foolish not to include Build Me Up, Break Me Down, I admit.
-

yeah. Though they took out Forsaken it looks like (THANK THE STARS!)
And replaced it with another midtempo single. Hm... Peruvian Skies and The Great Debate would be the next songs up, were this still summer....
-
Betting on Peruvian Skies next

Woah... Silent Man... guess that means no Caught in a Web then??
Yeah, while I'm really excited they are doing The Silent Man, I really hope they do another song from Awake as well.

Holy fuck. No Way....
-
An acoustic spot... very nice.
And I kinda like Forsaken... I tend to like the songs a lot of people hate. ha!
-
This is so far a well made set.
-
Very nice Guys!!! Unexpected :metal :metal
-
I'm guessing two more ADTOE songs, On the Backs of Angels and Breaking All Illusions.
-
I can't wait until this is on Youtube!
-
Lost Not Forgotten could be cool here. The intro could let JP switch over to electric.
-

-Marc.

-
Nice transition after acoustic spot into TGD. Very nice!
-
YES!! The Great Debate!! They can play whatever the hell else they want from old albums for the rest of the night.
-
THEY KEPT THE GREAT DEBATE
FUCKING YEAH, MOTHERFOCKARS.

8. Beneath the Surface [Acoustic as well]
9. The Great Debate
Oh I know, but Ytse Jam is just an extension of his solo, in my eyes, and a good showcase of their (and particularly MM's) talents. It's a bit reverse as to what Rush has done in the past (play an instrumental, into Neil's solo, then do an acoustic set), but I guess they didn't want to rip-off Rush ENTIRELY...
1. Bridges in the Sky
2. These Walls
3. Build Me Up, Break Me Down
4. Endless Sacrifice
5. Drum Solo
6. Ytse Jam
7. The Silent Man [Acoustic Guitar, James and John --EDIT: Jordan as well]
8. Beneath the Surface [Acoustic as well]
9. The Great Debate
I wonder if they'll keep OTBOA after TGD? I'm sure they will...then probably play one more old song, then close the set with FFH/BAI?
-Marc.
-
Holy shit, this is an amazing setlist so far.
-
Pretty cool, and very unexpected set so far :o
-
I would expect:
10. On The Backs of Angels
11. Peruvian Skies
12. Breaking All Illusions
encore:
13. The Spirit Carries On
14. (either) Learning To Live or Pull Me Under
-
I think they'll play a bit more. We're only at a bit over an hour...
-
As much as I love FFH, I'm hoping it doesn't show because of TSM and BTS back to back acoustic combo.
-
Please keep Caught in A Web...even though they've already done one song from Awake...
-
Gief some I&W and SFAM songs now pleeeaaase :corn
-
So happy I have never seen any of these songs live besides Endless Sacrifice. So excited for October 16th :metal
-
I'm wondering what BCSL song will show up... Wither?
-
I'm wondering what BCSL song will show up... Wither?
Not gonna lie, I forgot this album existed.

I wouldn't be the least bit shocked if they didn't play anything from SC or BC&SL
-
I'm wondering what BCSL song will show up... Wither?
Not gonna lie, I forgot this album existed.
I actually don't know if they have time for a Systematic, Black Clouds, FII, Images, and Scenes song.
-
10. On the Backs of Angels
expected :tup
-
So for now the setlist was upgrade only with BITS BMUBMD and acoustic part... ;)
-
Nice, I've seen a Euro show this summer, and I like the changes and additions so far. Really happy The Silent Man is in the set.
-
I've seen TCOT though if they record a DVD, it'd be awesome to get it on DVD. Otherwise, they can skip SC and BC&SL or Wither since it is a lot shorter.
-
I feel like there should be another 40 minutes or so...no?
-
Outcry might be tough to be sneaked in there :'(
-
lol technology
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xGw0rLyNIcU
-
Pretty sure if ACOS, Octavarium or Metropolis sneaks into this setlist I'll be booking a day off and getting a tix to Vancouver as well.
-
Can someone add up these times?
-
Roughly an hour and 20-25. Give or take.
(adding songs to a playlist as it's updated, and then figured the drum solo is about 4-5 minutes)
-
Pretty sure if ACOS, Octavarium or Metropolis sneaks into this setlist I'll be booking a day off and getting a tix to Vancouver as well.
The first two will never happen, especially since they're (co-)written by Portnoy, but the last one is definitely possible.
-
lol technology

LOL nice :metal
-
I think BAI has to be in the set. Maybe also a I&W and SFAM songs beforehand...?
-
we're at about 75 minutes of music right now with the current setlist.
-
iTunes says that we are at 1.2 hours
-
lol technology

i gave the first "like" and "thumbs up" on the first video posted from this tour..let it be known

8. Beneath the Surface [Acoustic as well]
9. The Great Debate
10. On the Backs of Angels
11. Forsaken
Well, "Forsaken" is a "track 2", which follows a "track 1", so it KIND OF works.
This leaves songs from IAW, FII, SFAM, and BC&SL. That is, if they keep to the one-song-per-past-album thing.
-Marc.
-
Is actually excited :metal

Why Forsaken? WHY???!!!

sorta disappointed not to see more songs from this amazing album (dramatic turn) and one of the songs theyre playing from it is the worst song (build me up)
-
Oddly enough, I think I might prefer "Prophets Of War" over "Forsaken" in that spot. Ah well.

I wonder what's gonna be next :)
I seriously don't know since I never really listen to that album. Is it Beyond This Life?
Edit: Oh, Fatal tragedy. One of the better songs from that album.
-
Through my Words? Now that's the shortest Dream Theater song of all time! Big setlist though, much better than a Progressive Nation one! :metal :metal :metal
-
Didn't Mike or Jordan say on twitter he was working on an "epic" song or something at practice?
-
did the power go out in SF again? :rollin
-
that was The Count of Tuscany, and it was before the first European leg
-
did the power go out in SF again? :rollin
???
-
I wonder if they'll swap any songs for different dates. Their main reason was because it would be a lot for MM to learn enough songs to have different setlists.
Now that they have played 2 tours, they have a small repertoire.
-
doubt it.
-
Doubt it +1

Be back in a minute. just gotta change my underwear

If I don't see Breaking All Illusions on this setlist eventually, I'm going to cry.
Me to, but probably it will appear :)
-
If I don't see Breaking All Illusions on this setlist eventually, I'm going to cry.
That would really shock me!
-
Lovely set so far. BITS as the opener must be beyond any awesomeness. I hope it stays that way till the european leg.
-
This is absolutely incredible.
-
So that means I&W and BCSL haven't had songs played off of them yet... I&W song for Encore and no BCSL song?
-
this is what dreams are made of

Guess so.. 99% sure they will play BAI + something from I&W, and dunno if they have time for more??

Amazing setlist so far, love the acoustic section! Nevertheless BAI must appear for it to be perfect!

FFH>BAI and call it a night?
-
As... the encore (presumable first encore, but still)?
Breaking All Illusions next?
-
Even with the short songs, this is a beefy setlist to be sure. :metal I will not have a voice the next morning and thats bad because I work in a call center!! :P
-
I was hoping they'd keep UAGM somewhere! :metal
I didn't expect it to be an encore song, though. But this pretty much guarantees that BAI is next.
-
...Where is Breaking All Illusions?

Unexpected. I like unexpected.

Oh wait there is gonna be another song coming up. I thought they just ended the show with UAGM...

Unusual encore... but hey why not... maybe they'll alternate encores again... and I don't think it guarantees BAI is next...

Metropolis has been both many times. Same with PMU
Oh I know, I should have clarified I meant from one tour to the literal next.
They opened the first two shows of the 1993 music in progress tour with Learning To Live (with Metropolis as set closer and PMU as encore), then they realized the mistake and switched back to Metropolis > ... > PMU /// LTL
Set is over.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
-
If it's over it sucks for me , thanx for info James ;)
-
Take out the drum solo, Forsaken, and TMW and replace with BAI please DT

WTF, no BAI ???
Sry, but that is a big BIG dissapointment :|

other than Forsaken and no BAI,amazing setlist. :tup

You're welcome everybody! I'm going to bed because it is WAY past my bedtime. Give many props to FW as well ;)

I am crying right now. ;_;
-
surprised too because MM talked about in an interview that he was getting used to his "full" kit for the NA tour, and specifically mentioned the cowbells in BAI.
so bummed no BAI, but pretty fantastic setlist.
-
I'm pretty surprised that there's only 1 encore song
-
lmao @ including build me up and not lost not forgotten or breaking all illusions
-
thanks Fiery Winds and James....
it is getting me so excited for manana
-
October 6 at Massey Hall can't come soon enough!
-
You guys do realize that there will be other shows, and that they can still play Breaking All Illusions right?
-
lmao @ including build me up and not lost not forgotten or breaking all illusions
Yeah kinda weird.
It would have been nice if they took out Build Me Up & Forsaken and add in Breaking All Illusions
-
Probably gonna get lynched for saying this, but I'm glad they didn't play BAI. :hat
-
Set is over.
Well, I guess that BAI would have been too good to be true but that doesn't mean it isn't going to appear on any setlist, we'll just have to wait and see.
Thanx James and Fiery Winds for the updates!
-
You guys do realize that there will be other shows, and that they can still play Breaking All Illusions right?
It's not guaranteed for any one show though. It's such a wonderful song that everyone should get to experience live.
-
Very awesome guys, this made my night. big ups.
-
You guys do realize that there will be other shows, and that they can still play Breaking All Illusions right?
I really hope so.. as long as they play it in Chicago I'm ok :P
-
I'm just saying, I hope you guys get it, but I don't get why you would be upset if they don't play it because it's still a really badass set.
-
Whoops I may not have won. I am tied with a few other people at 12 songs correct.
-
Welp, I'm happy with the set list. Looking forward to the DC show!
-
I'm just saying, I hope you guys get it, but I don't get why you would be upset if they don't play it because it's still a really badass set.
It's not that I'd leave the concert upset. It's that I'd leave the concert multitudes happier if they played it.
-
Good set list overall. It doesn't have any major heavy hitters from previous albums, but the acoustic stuff is great, and you can't argue with five songs from the new album. Odds are, assuming that this is THE set list for the current U.S. tour, that the other new ones will likely appear on set lists in Europe or if they do another U.S. leg next year.
-

This.
Also I am a bit baffled that they didn't play it since BAI seems to be widely regarded as the best and most epic song on the album, so I kinda took it for granted that they would play it in the end (like with ITNOG on ToT tour, Octavarium on 8VM tour and Count of Tuscany on BC&SL tour).
But whatever, I'm still looking forward to a great concert next weekend! :metal
-
What a fucking kick ass show. Bit disappointed they didn't play BAI, but phenomenal nonetheless.
-
Great looking setlist, but would have been amazing with BAI
-
Probably gonna get lynched for saying this, but I'm glad they didn't play BAI. :hat
yeah, they should avoid their top songs and instead play tunes like forsaken
-
Would have assumed BAI would have been a staple song for every show. A perfect closer. Quite stunned they left it out considering the number of new songs they played and the feedback on that song. God I hope they play it in Toronto.
-
I'm not stunned or surprised or shocked or disappointed or baffled or dazed or confused they didn't play BAI by the time James posted they played Outcry it was already a record for amount of new songs per show compared with the last 2 tours at least.
-
Good set, although I would replace the drum solo and BMUBMD with Breaking All Illusions and Forsaken with Wither. I'm surprised (but not disappointed) at the lack of BC&SL; it seems weird that they didn't include anything from their highest charting release in the US. I wonder if this tells something about the band's opinion on that album...
-
What a fucking kick ass show. Bit disappointed they didn't play BAI, but phenomenal nonetheless.
You owe me a review.
-
Wait.. Are you kidding me? That's the same boring songs they played on the summer european tour! And no BAI!
:tdwn
-

Dude, your work on BTS was breathtaking, nothing less, especially when the fin cut underneath him, that was awesome. And if you did the opening vid too, I want to have your babies.

Did JM reprise playing rhythm guitar for The Silent Man? or how was that handled?

I didn't do the opening vid. I did the BITS intro after it though.
-
Well..... A solid setlist. I honestly thought they'd play the "Big 3".... BITS, Outcry, and BAI. What I'm thinking now is that tomorrow night we may get BAI instead of Outcry. UAGM as an encore.....I dunno... Love the song but it's a semi-epic in my mind, and a opener not a closer. I'm going back to the thread I posted a month or so ago, Drum solo vs. Song. I'd happily trade the drum solo and say... Forsaken, for BAI. Any which way, like Lonestar said, it'll be an awesome show, and I'll leave ecstatic... but I'm greedy....LOL.
-
DOES ANYBODY HAVE PICTURES? :O
-
DOES ANYBODY HAVE PICTURES? :O
Or some nice video clips? I've only seen the one of the drum solo.

YEAH THE HELL. I WANT CLIPS. All I've seen so far is like half a minute of BITS.
-
I wonder if they all sing "15 minutes to Shaman" before the show now instead of Psycho ;)

YES. Glad I could see that bit. :hat

excellent

Definitely. And when JLB sings the last chorus. Just wow.

That, Silent Man, and BiTS were my faves. Fatal Tragedy kicked ass too.
-
Just got back! Thanks Jamesman for relaying the setlist info!
WOW. Just wow. After the first two songs, James had to yell at us to shut up because the crowd was just INSANE with applause. I've never seen the guys so happy and relaxed on stage in the 5 times I've seen them.
Highlights:
BITS opening. I was 99% sure they would open with it and I was right. Fantastic way to open the set.
The acoustic set. Such a great moment shared between James and John. Jordan played backup keys (mainly the heavy bass patch).
Mangini. Phenomenal job handling all those songs without skipping a beat. He was really enjoying himself up there.
The Great Debate. I've been waiting to hear this song and they delivered.
Last but not least, James LaBrie ROCKED. I'm very very critical when it comes to his vocal performances. Most of the videos and performances that other people praise and say "He's back!!" leave me wanting. However, he really brought his A-game and was hitting every note without struggling. Particular in The Great Debate near the end, and he was still holding on to those high notes without his typical extreme vibrato. Fantastic.
Overall, the best DT show I've been to (My first show was in 04 for the ToT tour). My only qualm was Forsaken, but otherwise a fantastic setlist and even better performance by everyone in the band. Rawwwwwwwk!!!!
-
I just watched the intro and the beginning of BITS clip... All I have to say is HOLY SHIT ! I mean, apart from the vibe it creates, those lights and cubic screens and how the whole stage looks - incredible ! I really can't wait till January now.
And BTS - James :hefdaddy
-
Setlist is great and all, but that is a WEIRD place to put an acoustic pair of songs. They'd be great at the start of an encore or something, but surely they just suck the momentum out of the set where they are right now? I wasn't there though, so I don't know for sure.
-
I don't know, I've seen a lot of acts of all kinds (e.g. Foo Fighters, Katy Perry, Paramore) do a similar thing recently. It must be 'in' right now.
-
An acoustic breakdown in the middle of the set, featuring a song that I wanted to hear for a long time (The Silent Man) and my favorite ballad (Beneath the Surface)?!
No they didn't. They freakin' didn't.
Also, I knew James would make a mistake and sing "And began to forget why you longed to be so close"...it's almost like JP switched "longed" with "tried" in the second chorus to confuse him in live performances XD
And last note: FINALLY James records 2 vocal lines in studio, and JP sings one of them live (rather than having JP to sing the other line in studio in the first place). I'm so glad about that.
-

Maybe it's just a personal thing. It's not something i'd personally do if I was picking a setlist. That's probably it. It's great that both of those songs are in the set but I don't agree with where they are. But if people say it works, then it works.
-
Fantastic that JP brought an actual acoustic guitar on stage for the first time in umpteen years and did 2 songs with it. If I'm not mistaken, the original acoustic version of TSM hasn't been played since the Awake tour.
:metal
-
The setlist is good, except for a strange encore (great song, nonetheless) and a couple of my lesser favorites. It's still gonna be rockin' seeing this in February. :metal
And yeah... Bridges in the sky and Beneath the surface. :hefdaddy

I'm not in love with the set list.
Really wish they would have kept Caught in a Web...surprised they had nothing from FII.
BUT...they kept GREAT DEBATE! Pleasepleaseplease keep that in the set until Chicago and I will forgive you for my other minor gripes. I kinda dig that a HUGE chunk is new stuff.
The thing is, with this lineup...everything seems new. I wouldn't mind hearing stuff I've already heard before cause I want to see them with the reinvigorated attitude. I want to hear MM DOMINATE. Oh well, plenty more tours to see that.
-
Really wish they would have kept Caught in a Web
Yeah, I would take it over Forsaken anytime. :metal

Chills, man.

I love the opening video LoL! I guess they picked up on the fact that everyone is calling Mangini the Gene :tup!
-
From what I could see of the new Mika Tyyskä intro cartoon, it looks awesome (I love the Genie). :lol
-
I am fine with the setlist, well except for Forsaken, The Great Debate and UAGM. But, I am expecting them to switch some songs around during the tour. I thought the intro at the beginning of the concert was too long. Inception intro followed by BITS intro is about 4 minutes. Just do one or the other would work better. The Silent Man is a nice surprise. Hope they keep that in the set. I was also hoping that Mangini would totally redo his solo. I would really like to see him do an aggressive, in your face, I'm here to kick your ass solo.
-

Great question....anyone?????

hopefully DT monitors threads like these for feedback. the only thing missing was BAI. add that (removing forsaken, of course), and it'll be a perfect set. ;)
-
I gotta say, the stage looks awesome.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yh6OL-P7qcg
-
btw, what a hell of a mic stand does JLB have!!!
-
Aside from the lack of TITL or BAI, I have no major problems with the setlist. And I imagine they'll probably rotate some songs in and out as needed. In particular, I think they'll switch between UAGM and LTL, much like they did LTL & PMU/Metropolis for the Octavarium tour. If that is the case, I'm hoping I catch LTL, as I would love to see that song live.
-
Tired. I'll just say the set was amazing. The performance was perhaps the best I have seen, EVER. Blob's animations were incredible--especially the opening. I'll tell you more about it later. And John Petrucci sends his personal thanks to all of you for supporing the band.

Btw, I glimpsed a sign on the wall at the venue with these times:
Trivium: 8 - 8:45
DT: 9:15 - 11:15

Hmm, it seemed like it was longer than that from my end.

Correct, he did not do the screams. He sang the main melody while JP sang the harmony. I was really impressed with JP's backup vocals the whole night. He was confident, having fun, and sounded great.
-
To Bosk, H, and Fierywinds, it was a great pleasure to meet you all, and I'm glad we all had a rocking time. As my buddy who was with us put it,"Very nice guys, though I had no idea WTF you guys were talking about." :lol

Gonna be surely waiting for this. I really hope Blob posts the videos on his website soon for my/our viewing pleasure.

Am i the only one who thinks the setlist is kinda "weak"?, i mean, its just the same setlist from last tour with 3 new songs on it, feels kinda lazy... Specially excluding TITL, FFH BAI and LNF, wtf? isnt this the tour to promote ADTOE? why would they leave out the best songs of the album?
:tdwn
-
Anyone who went to this show, can you post a picture of the t shirt you bought?

For those that went to the show. They keep talking about the production. The light show looks great, got live films, the screens obviously. Anything else?
The screens actually kind of look like they are hard to see
-
I was going to watch the video but then I realized I will see it for real in about an hour
:metal
-
I'll probably post a detailed review in the morning, but a couple of things:
1. The set list was NOT "weak" by any stretch.
2. As far as the lighting, screens, production, etc.: There is nothing more elaborate than what you guys saw in the videos, but it just all worked together really well and made for a great atmosphere and backdrop for the music.
-
The show was great. I really enjoyed myself. The new songs came across amazing as well.
The one thing I really noticed was how much more relaxed and engaged James is on stage. That has to be directly related to not having a drummer that wants to be a frontman talking to the crowd constantly sitting behind him. It's like James opened up, in a good way. Mangini really is energetic, and the band fed off it. Everyone was in great form and really high energy.
I DID feel the set list was a little lacking. I totally support the band playing songs off their new record. I believe it was five cuts. But when your songs are long like that, and you play two hours, you don't really do justice to the back catalog either. Playing one song (acoustic) from Awake and one song (the encore of UAGM) from I&W, and completely ignoring FII and Black Clouds is a bit ridiculous.
Again, I get it. I fully endorse them supporting their new record. I believe in bands that do that. But in DT's case, it made the set a little unbalanced. Still totally enjoyable. But noticeably unbalanced.
Had dead center and a great view. The show and the energy really re-ignited my fandom of the band. I also felt the new songs translated great live and man, what an absolute epic Bridges in the Sky is. Hell of a way to open a show...and a tour.
-

Definitely nice meeting you as well!
I thought the show was fantastic. I hadn't heard any of the songs live before. I was actually happy they played Outcry over BAI since I like it more. The only disappointment was the short encore, but UAGM still blew us away.
Also, Mangini is an incredible drummer. As well as an incredible person to talk to. :)

Agreed. It worked so well.

It makes me sad that James went online and saw people bitching about the setlist.

Why? Are we machines now that we cant express our opinions freely? Is 'bitchin' the new synonym of a normal opinion? I'm sure James appreciates the interest and emotions that the fans are showing towards this tour. What makes Dream Theater a great band is that they listen to their fans. Love you James ;D (in case you read this)
-
There's a difference between "I really like song X and REALLY hope they can find a way to incorporate it into their set" and "I can't believe they didn't include song X; there are so many crappy songs in the set they could have pulled so that they could fit this in instead." The former is expressing an opinion. The latter is ingratitute and immature whining.
-
For some reason, I really liked they shaked up things a bit with Under A Glass Moon as a closer.
-
Do we know then (or can we speculate) which forum (DTF or official DTF?) was in the orbit of JLB's internet voyage?
-
I'm going to take a wild guess that it was this one.
-
Do we know what he said, specifically?
-
I just hope they (band) won't dwell on the negatives when it comes to forumers. There's so much positive energy here and (from your other thread, bosk) it's nice to know that JP loves this forum. I guess it dates back to the September events when JP was very active on the webs and he got to read the worship thread here.
I mean, we don't want another Never Enough, do we?

No, the latter is also expressing an opinion. If someone else doesn't like songs they are playing live, they have a right to express that. Sure, saying "crappy songs in the set" isn't very articulate, but that isn't a big deal.
The problem happens when fans of the songs that were called "crappy" then cry foul (which is ridiculous) and start labeling fans who don't like something as "immature whiners."
Please.
I'm not saying there shouldn't be a line. Obviously, if you have some guy dropping a boat load of F-Bombs about certain songs and what not, yeah, that is a little overboard. But just because someone thinks a song or songs are "crappy" is not whining.
I don't hate "These Walls," but I do think the song is boring and would much rather have had something off of Awake or FII in its place. That's not whining, that's mature criticism.

wut

You can argue over the descriptions all you want, but the reality is, one mode of expressing an opinion is perfectly fine on this forum, and another gets people ejected. People who want to post here are well advised to understand the difference.

Just not a huge fan. It's a decent cut. It just doesn't do much for me. I'd gladly swap it out for something else. Is what it is.

And what you said in the post I quoted is akin to insulting people who don't like a set list and want to express it. Admin or not, that's how it came across. Do I think that's what you intended? Absolutely not. But people should not fear wanting to post something critical on here.
You may run this board like it is an official forum, and that's great. But people should not be afraid to say "hey, I think this song sucks and wish they would have played this instead." That's a perfectly legitimate statement.
Your post made it seem that those sentiments and expression weren't welcome. And I sincerely hope they are, because if not, why not just re-brand this place as "Dream Theater Public Relations HQ?"
;)
Glad you had fun at the show. I did too. Great gig.
-
Thanks for the advice, but I'll both run this place how I like and "brand" it what I like. And I think how I run it is relatively clear. But enough off topic discussion about how the forum "should" be run. Let's get it back on topic, please. Thanks.
-
It wasn't advice.
Yes sir!
The San Francisco show was grrrrrrrrrrrrreat! Woo!
-
Please check out bosk's thread for his full review of the show. I posted mine in there I hope thats ok too. I fully agree with his experience. Hope to see DT for many years to come. The show was nothing like I expected. I mean I expected it to be awesome but it far surpassed that. Keep the Dream alive guys :metal :metal :metal

I think James sound absolutely amazing these days, but sometimes he sounds a little bit insecure and doesn't give the notes enough power so that they end up too low in terms of pitch. This is a good example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-UeNf7mvMAE&feature=mfu_in_order&list=UL
Maybe he didn't hear himself well enough in the mix ?
And if you are reading this, James: You just got to trust yourself 100%. If you just break a leg and give 100% on every note the pitch will be perfect every time. Everytime you go passive mode you go to low :D

It makes me sad that James went online saw people bitching about the setlist.
yay I'm not the only one. It just shows how spoiled we are.
-
Yeah, I hope they didn't change the set based on discussion here. That'd be lame. But, honestly, if the band is going to try and cater what a handful of people on the internet say about sets, that's on them.

I think that's a DT song that doesn't translate well live. Not just JLB...obviously it's different being there, but the video is uhhh
Also, how do we know JLB was reading our forum?
-
I can tell you; I can see myself going nuts by just hearing that guitar riff kicking in.
-
I'm sure I'll like it if I get it next month, but man on video it's bad.
-
Clearly they already knew BAI and those new songs. Was James just joking?
-
A man who drives a forklift to every show when he doesn't have to probably never humors himself or others. What a fucking dude.

I agree. There are too many samples and the band can't pull off the vocals in the post-chorus. Thought the chorus sounded alright though. Myung is playing the Taurus but you can't really hear it in that clip,

Just found this vid of The Silent Man, apologies if it's been posted. I would have killed for these seats BTW.

From one of Jordan's recent interviews
Rudess describes a particularly special moment the night before in San Francisco.
"After the first two songs we stop so James can talk to the crowd. Before he spoke, we got the longest ovation in Dream Theater history. It's like the crowd was saying, "Thank god you survived all the inner turbulence and that things turned out so well. That was amazing. After the show everybody was saying that the vibe onstage felt so positive; that they were feeling the joy up there between us. This year was a rough transition for us, so I like where we are right now."
I feel so happy to have been apart of that. I wonder how the other crowds compared?

Thanks for posting that. I too am proud to have been part if that moment.
