I am pretty new to bands with female vocalists, and I am looking for more to check-out! I know these bands:
Nightwish
Within Temptation
Skillet
Epica (will get to check them out soon)
Distributor
Evanescence
-
Check out the first Stream of Passion album, Embrace the Storm. That has my favorite female vocalist, Marcela Bovio.
-
A couple at the top of my head:
Lacuna Coil
Eisley
-
Animal Alpha.
Check out the tracks "Bundy" and "Catch Me".
Madder Mortem also has a couple of gems, like "My Name is Silence".
Happy youtubing!
-
Heart.
Some of Fleetwood Mac.

Very strong album.

Panic Room
Mostly Autumn

Magenta
Kaipa (The reformed version in the 2000's)

Surprised nobody has mentioned Paramore yet, even in 7 replies.

-
Nightwish
Epica
Within Temptation
Xandria
Theatre of Tragedy
Lacuna Coil
Stream of Passion
After Forever
Sinergy
Inkkubus Sukkubus (not really metal, but very gothy rock with a symphonic edge that would still fit in with many of the bands mentioned here)
and if you are looking for something more old school:
Warlock
Hellion
Meanstreak ;)
Girlschool
-
Nouvelle Vague if you like Bossa Nova covers of '80s music.
The metal bands have been pretty well covered. Looking into any other genres, get back to me.
-
I think I'll go ahead and steal Rave's thunder now; I'd recommend you to listen to Emilie Autumn.
-
Do you also want, like, non-metal music?
That music counts too! Thanks everyone so far for the suggestions!
-
iwrestledabearonce
no just kidding, they're ... something quite special let's put it that way.
-
Something quite awful actually...
Here's a few I enjoy:
Diablo Swing Orchestra
Stolen Babies
Kylesa
Sonic Youth
Unexpect
-
Anything by Paatos, although their live album Sensors is amazing and highly recommended.

YESYESYESYES Glad to see another Paatos fan here, they don't get much love around these parts :tup
Also, check out To-Mera, as you seem to have prog-metally tastes.
-
Older album... But 4 Non Blondes - Bigger Better Faster, More!
Her vocals kick some serious ass.
-
The Runaways.
-
The Runaways.
Come to think of it, no discussion of "Chix that Rock" would be complete without Joan Jett. Both the Runaways, as well as her stuff with the Blackhearts , especially in the 80's, had a lot of material worth checking out.
Also, check out Pat Benatar. Great 80's female fronted pop-ish hard rock. Heartbreaker, Invincible and Hell Is For Children are some of the best rock songs with female vocals ever written. :metal
-
Only female:
Intergalactic Lovers
Meanwhile, Back In Communist Russia
múm
Noisettes
PJ Harvey
Portishead
Robyn
Selah Sue
Tori Amos
Both male and female:
Air
Arcade Fire
Damien Rice
Low
Massive Attack
My Bloody Valentine
The New Pornographers
Pure Reason Revolution
Röyksopp
The xx
-
Vixen
-
Solas,(The Edge of Silence is one of my absolute favourite albums)
10,000 Maniacs
-
Our house brah, Zydar has a kickass Who-ish (IMO) sounding power pop band going under way, and their stuff is really fun and energetic.
I'd recommend their songs He and Super Nova as their very best stuff.

Rocky has incredible pipes. The band started doing Rush covers and is now about to release its third album of original material. They are ALL excellent at what they do.

What? No Concrete Blonde? Only one mention of Heart? No Anneke van Giersbergen? C'mon.
-
Cardamon
If you love Anneke van Giersbergen's work like I do, Floortje Donia is probably the closest I've heard to capturing her essence. I just love this style of atmospheric, semi-progressive, melancholic rock/metal.

Darzamat
Nera has a really rich alto range, and paired with the melodic black metal instrumentation and harsh vocals creates quite a unique vibe.

Kate Havnevik
Not really a band, but an electronic auteur in the Bjork mold, she's so adept at creating evocative moods and textures.

Just to make everyone aware that the request in this thread was literally from 10 years ago.
JediKnight1969, can you please stop bumping random threads from 10 years ago. If you want to generate some new discussion in these threads, then that's great, please do so, but random bumps just responding as though the threads are recent is confusing for people.

There are no "random bumps". As you can see I'm not making jokes or anything. Just reading old threads and wanting to say something about it. If it's not allowed, OK. I'll stop.

This thread, for example, I would call a pretty random bump. The OP asking for recommendations hasn't even logged in to DTF for 7.5 years. :lol
It's not that it's not allowed, it's that just replying as though it's a current, active thread can be confusing for people. If you want to do that, it would be better to acknowledge that in your post and make it clear that you're bumping an old thread to get some new discussion going (which again is totally fine).

Understood.

What? No Concrete Blonde?
For reasons I could never understand, my now-wife/then-girlfriend got me a Concrete Blonde CD for my first birthday after we got together (I don't recall the name...it had a song called Joey). Blech! The singer sounded like she was a cross between bored and annoyed that she was being made to sing the songs (like she had somewhere better to be).

Blooodletting; that was their biggest album.
I see what you mean; she is/was (she's not dead, but doing other things as i understand it) very LA, blase in her attitude. I listened mainly for James Mankey, who is/was a great guitar player. Kind of in the Dave Navarro mold sort of.

This thread was started before my favorite girl band WARPAINT! So many bands have come out like them, it's now a whole movement of dark indie female bands.
-
The 2000 PJ Harvey album " Stories From the City " is a must have. The follow up Uh Huh Her is also cool if you like dirty garage rock with female vocals.
-
Rocket Moth (Hannah Stobart from The Wishing Tree and Paul Craddick from Enchant)

Warpaint the band existed before this thread, but the Warpaint topic wasn't started when this was.
No idea why I never chimed in, but I love tons of bands/artists that have female vocals.
Warpaint
Kimbra
Dirt Poor Robins
Bent Knee
Janelle Monae
Tokyo Jihen
Esperanza Spalding
Kacica
Mutyumu
Nexus
Timbre
Amanda Palmer
Pepe Deluxe
iamthemorning
Renaissance
and to add to all-female bands like Warpaint, there's The Warning.

Wow, you've been together since you were zero?!

It's really quite impressive considering I'm three years older than she.
