Title: 2011-07-05 - Castello Scaligero - Verona, ITA
Post by: wasteland on July 05, 2011, 03:03:33 AM
Here's the thread where to discuss tonight's gig!

Rollcall:

DreamerTV

Some pics of the venue. This one is really awesome. A video bootleg would be great to record this stunning live environment.

I don't know if it's believable, but apparently they started off with ACOS.

Yeah, I just read through the thread for yesterday's show and it seemed like there was a lot of inaccurate posts on the setlist.fm site.  What a great way to start a show though.

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the second show of the 2011 DT Summer Tour.

The show has just started, the first song is...

At first sight, LaBrie sounds more relaxed and at ease than yesterday. But this is just an impression, we'll see as the show progresses.

What, they started early?

Yes. Town rules impose a earlier curfew, so every band had to start early to cope with that.

I hope they don't repeat setlists. I hope they change a lot of the songs!

i wouldnt count on it. that's already a ton of music for MM to learn and perfect. rotating setlists for his first tour might be a little too much.

I can see them change 2-3 songs in the set, but I know its a long shot to see a COMPLETELY different set.

The overall band performance on this first song seemed somehow tighter.

1. Under A Glass Moon
2. These Walls

But on the other hand he'll learn more songs and have more experience with them in a live setting. I see them changing songs more frequently and more noticeably as this tour goes on.

I won't be too surprised if the set lists stay fairly similar for a while at first.  You have to remember that Mangini is new to the band, and all of the songs aren't ingrained in his head like they are for the others.  That will come with time.  Also remember that on both Sherinian and Rudess' first tours with the band, the set lists pretty much stayed the same the whole way through the legs (DS on the Awake tour in the fall/winter of '94, and Rudess on the M:2000 tour in the spring on '00).  And the band's discography is much larger now than it was when they both joined, so there is a lot more material for Mangini to learn on the fly than there was for DS or JR.

Hey, chill XD If it were for me, I would always close with LTL, it is the ultimate DT song and conclusion of a gig. I was just speculating that they could retain the same setlist every night, rotating just two/three song as encores...

Yeah, we're past OTBOA, and at the moment Caught In A Web is being played.

There was actually nothing great to witness.

Yesterday crowd have been amazing, today the atmosphere is somehow less warm. Maybe it's beacause everyone in the audience already knew what the setlist was going to be...

Wait. are you saying most of these people went to both of the shows? Anyways, I guess it was sorta expected. At least Mangini got his love from the crowd XD

By the way, did his solo sound good? Was it any different?

I doubt that's the reason.  Assuming DT gets an average of 2-4K fans per show, how many of those do you think actually take the time to look online to find set lists?  Not every fan is a forum nut like many of us here. :lol

Wait. are you saying most of these people went to both of the shows? Anyways, I guess it was sorta expected. At least Mangini got his love from the crowd XD

By the way, did his solo sound good? Was it any different?

Same golden shit as yesterday's.  :corn

Actually, something happened: the whole band went directly into The Count after finishing Caught In A Web. Then they realized that things had got horribly wrong and started over with Through My Words.  :lol

So, even if it's 2am here, and i'm soooooo tired, i'll give you a short review

First of all, i would spend two words for Anathema: what a great band, and what a disappointment that their guitarist had to do self promotion after their gig through the crowd...

Dream Theater: Did you remember James being on stage for less of 1/3 of the show?. Did you remember his detached attitude towards the other members?. Have you ever seen James laughing that hard with JP to quite stop singing?. As far as i know your answer, let me say that now is the opposite.
They've done mistakes. Pretending they won't is something that goes behind ridiculousness. Mangini had some troubles right before UAGM's solo, and here and there he've lost tempo, and JR helped him a lot by clapping his hand on thigh. Petrucci lost sound during OTBOA, and Rudess during The Great Debate, if i'm not wrong (but i bet i am). To me, as opposite of what some italians fan are saying in Fb pages, James sound amazing. I would like to re-watch right now LTL to know if i imagined what i've heard: to me, he sounded almost perfect. Far better from what i've heard from Rome. It seems like Rome and, but we knew that, this tour really serve to getting into shape for the world tour.
But if this is their shape now, i can't even think of what they could do in a couple of months. What an energetic show, Petrucci had a great sound, a JMX too: maybe someone told the band that in Rome MM was too loud and JR too low, 'cause they've clearly exchenged the situation, JR was too loud and MM too low. The Great Debate live is phenomenal, hope you'll have the chance to see it.

About Mike Magini: my father said "they've lost sound". As said by my father, who's a non-musician, i can really understand what he meant. Even if Portnoy in last tours used to do basically always the same things, his mix was loud and aggressive. His focus wasn't to have a sound, but to make noise, and hitting that kit hard. But he made it in the right spots, 'cause he knew perfectly the songs. If i think of things that made DT more popular in the last couple of years, despite IMHO less quality, i'll think about guitar sound and loud drumming.
To me, Magini drumming sounds incredible, but it goes more in a musical direction. And i like it, but i can understand why people may would noticed more than i've done MP absence. I think time will give MM enough confidence to give aggressivness to his sound instead of being scared to make mistaks.
Apart from that, when at the end of the show we screamd MANGINI MANGINI MANGINI he freaked out jumping and clapping and smiling as a happy little boy. I felt so happy for him that you can't even imagine.

About James laughing hard with JP, it happend during TCOT, when lines say "i want to say goodbye, this could be the last time you see me alive" and JP made an hello hand to him... It was hilarious!.

In the end, i really enjoyed the show, i think they're in a really great shape, and i can't wait to ADTOE to come out and to see them again ASAP.

p.s. we got the new camel....

It must be insane to mm right now. He has to learn all these crazy songs and parts and his first gigs get put up on YouTube so everyone can point out the mistakes. People didn't have to deal with that shit before YouTube. Not a knock on anyone here just a realization of this day and age.

I wasn't knocking Mike, just pointing out a funny flub... the guy is unbelievable. I can't imagine the pressure that's on him right now but everything that I've heard so far I'm happy with and on top of that he's incredibly humble. I hate to even compare him to MP but the main difference I hear is "pocket presence" ...in which MP never really had imo. he would often speed up songs in certain parts or slow them a bit. - so other than being a technical monster, Mangini can keep a solid groove & stay tightly in the pocket which I really admire.

I don't know about anyone else, but it's hard not to get a little emotional while watching these clips. Sadness for MP not being there, pride in the other guys for coming up roses with MM, the crowds acceptance of MM and how I wish I could be at these shows. It's a new day, and I feel so privileged to be a fan of the best band in the world.

Also, what the fuck? Anyone who watches these clips can't deny that James is kicking some serious ass. The opening to UAGM and the last section of CIAW alone should silence the doubters. He's just as much of a monster as the other 4.

Well to be honest, James had better times IMO... ;) From these clips which I saw for now, He had some great, incredible moments, and some bad moments (like first verse in Learning To Live in Roma). Maybe it's because it's just the beginning of the tour. His voice sounds better in Verona than in Rome, IMO he needs a few shows to open up, and it will be very good ;)

I don't think they will change the setlist in this tour. Impossibile for MM to do a new album and learn other ten albums of insane drumming.

I smell a potential drum DVD from MM later with that title ;D

Yeah, I'm speaking specifically about the 2nd show. He sounds great on pretty much all of those clips, and I've been a loud critic of his live vocal performance since around 8VM. So good to hear him hitting those notes on CIAW.

I don't know if iin Rome was the same, but yesterday in Verona there were plenty of camera (2 on the main stage, 1 on Petrucci, 1 on Keboards and 2 on drums). I want a DVD recorded in Italy so bad, is a shame they play on small venue with bad acoustic.

Lol, James was good in CIAW, but the little cracks in his voice during the first high-register passage of the song remind me of Chile 2005.

Couldn't hear any cracks. His voice indeed went a little thin, because that's a really hard passage, but it sounded OK to me.

The one that stood out the most imo was "is the thirst of desire"...there weren't many cracks, but it was just a little throwback to 2005. That's my point XD

Watching the clips from this show atm and I have to say. Think LaBrie sounds awesome!! I was pretty "meh" about his performance in Rome. Thought it was a bit bland and lacked energy .. from most of these clips he seems to be pretty spot on, and in better shape overwall :) Great stuff!!

Edit... so, im through watching all clips (with acceptable sound quality) I could find. I'll change my first assessment and rephrase it to "LaBrie is a f--ing legend!" :D Really looking forward to seeing them in Norway when the time comes. By then I'll be living just 15 minutes from the venue as well.. weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee :metal Any norwegians here who would like to guess (or knows) when they'll be playing in Oslo btw? :)

I'm Norwegian, tjohei! Satser på at de kommer til Norge på turneen til albumet i høst! Vurderer sterkt å dra på High Voltage om to uker, men kanskje bedre å vente til de kommer hit.

Back to English... I just saw Endless Sacrifice from Verona, and HOLY ****! That note in the chorus is the highest I've ever heard James. Really good to know that he's back, and can't wait to hear how he improves during the tour!

It is not, it's just a high F (which is very high but not his highest ever), half a tone below the classic Learning To Live note. But it is quite understandable, the way it was sung really made it sound higher than it actually was.  ;)

Just for information, I am quite sure that James has (can?) reached in the past the A# (Cementary Gates or Number Of The Beast, I can't remember now). In the old days (92/93) he used to effortlessy hit the high G (Pull Me Under, The Killing Hand, Oh Holy Night), now I don't think he can afford to go much higher than the F# without sounding like a chicken being strangled (Lines In The Sand @CiM).

I will upload the dvd as a torrent on dimeadozen first (need to build some ratio for the incoming tour). Then, I will probably split the files and upload them on Megaupload and open a thread here where direct links will be provided!  :)

I haven't really put much thought into which key the highest notes are. All I hear is that it's goddamn high, and that's awesome. He may not be exactly like he was in 92/93, but who would? That's nearly 20 years ago. I think it's quite an accomplishment to be able to do anything like it still, especially with the food poisoning incident in mind.

Yeah, it is quite sad to see that much of this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=shyv5nLLhvY) has been lost. However, I fully agree with you: James only deserves to be praised for how well and professionally he controlled everything related to his voice in the last 7/8 years.

me was at the concert, and, while i was taping, i was sending wasteland news by sms, so he could post all that he posted until my cell had no charge. it was really difficult, for me. i wanted to tape just as i wanted to give you news. i thought wasteland told you his news from the concert was from italian voices. i'm sorry for the dead charging, really sorry.

anyway, we are going to make a bootleg from this show, too. the audio could be published in a short, but we also dediced to make a booklet with comments and impressions with footage. so, we have a lot of work to do. we really want that everyone fells part of the "cake".
