I can't beleive we have gone so long without one :sadpanda:
Here is the place to discuss this kick-ass band! :metal I would highly recommend them to anyone who likes the power/prog style (similar to Symphony X)
For those that don't know
Circus Maximus is a Norwegian progressive metal quintet from Oslo.
Current members
* Michael Eriksen – vocals
* Lasse Finbråten – keyboards
* Mats Haugen – guitars
* Truls Haugen – drums
* Glen Cato Møllen – bass guitar
So far they have two albums out; The 1st Chapter (2005) and Isolate (2007), I am a big fan of both, but the 1st Chapter is my favourite.
Unsurprisingly, the title track off that album is my favourite song of theirs
A very promising band! So early in their career, I can see so many more quality albums coming out from these dudes.
As far as I know, they are in the studio recording for their 3rd album, and I can't wait :hat
(https://www.circusmaximussite.com/images/home/band.jpg)
-
They've certainly taken their sweet ass time with their follow up to Isolate.

How so? Isolate was released less then 2 years ago. I think that is a fair amount of time for them to be putting out a new album this year ;)
I just hope the new album has more orchestration/epic stuff in it. Moar long songs please
-
Epic great Norwegian band! They have released two awesome albums and I cant wait for the third!^^ I agree that they have released two very "quality albums". I love Mikaels voice and the rest of the guys are really skilled! The first record is really good even though the follow up is even better!
My favourite songs are (though they are all great)
Mouth of Madness
Alive
Glory of the Empire
A Darkened Mind
(and)
Abyss
-
They play a highly listenable and catchy brand of prog-metal. I'm definitely down for their 3rd album.
-
They play a highly listenable and catchy brand of prog-metal.
That's a great way to describe it. It isn't anything groundbreaking, it is just good music that is fun to listen to. Even if their first album was very Images and Words-sounding, they have made two pretty solid debut albums. They have taken some heat for not having a unique sound, but what band really has their sound fully developed so early in their career?
-
the vocals are astonishingly good
-
I found out about their first album not too long after it was released, when some online prog radio station played the title track.
Fantastic band, and I await their third album.

Yup

And Yup.
-
One of my favorite prog bands. They're the perfect blend of everything I like. The DT influences don't bother me, and not for one second do I feel I'm listening to a Dream Theater clone band.
-
Absolute gem of a band. Both albums are a class act.
Anyone else dig Glory of the Empire as much as me? :metal
-
That band is great. Started really strong. Normally, a band needs a few album to sound really good. They just started like if they were doing that since like 10 years.
*appreciate*

Yes ... excellent description. Love 'em. Would be all over it if they ever toured North America.
-
Found this on youtube, "Ultimate Sacrifice": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pheApOZG7pM
Great performance I think.
-
One of my favorite bands. The 1st Chapter is one of the best songs ever made, in my opinion. The guitarist extremely clean live, from what I've seen, and the vocalist is pretty clean, too. They certainly seem to have Dream Theater influences, while at the same time, not sounding like Dream Theater (with the exception of Bioshere, which I can't help but think is a tribute to The Dance of Eternity).
-
I love everything I have of theirs...it is like DT part II
-
Glad to find a thread here, just discovered that band.
A friend gave me Isolate and as soon as my eyes fell on an instrumental track I jumped to it, I liked it! it's a good way I've been following for me to get into a band before the singer ruins it for me.
Now I'm gonna hear the rest of the CD, very excited about the sound, DT part II indeed yeshua.
-
Arrival of Love is one of the best songs I've ever heard!
-
Saying they are DT part 2 is ridonkulous. If you want a great example of a real clone band, go listen to Savage Circus' Dreamland Manor and then Blind Guardian's Imaginations From The Other Side. Circus Maximus definitely have Dream Theater influences, but they are not a DT clone.

Savage Circus are amazing, their new album is pretty sweet too.
-
I'm not saying they aren't. I have their first album, but still if you don't think they are a BG clone then you're in denial. Thomen could have made something more original.
-

Oh yeah, definitely a clone copy.
-
They have taken some heat for not having a unique sound
That is certainly a good way to put it.
I'll say that these guys are fantastic musicians.
-
The thing that I find wonderfully unique and refreshing about Circus Maximus is the way they blend 80's-style hair metal choruses and melodies into the prog-metal.
-
too much like DT for me.
-
It's weird there isn't one clear live video for them on youtube, all bootlegs.
-
There should at least be that one video for Why Am I Here from ProgPower.
-
I like them but I can't listen to them that much without thinking that they have no degree of orginality whatsoever and that therefore getting on my nerves a bit. Bit generic PM at times.
-
Wrapping up the last arrangements for the album!! Cant wait to play this live:) Yours Mats
[I managed to delete what I had written.]
-
Wow, how did I never notice this thread? Isolate is one of my favorite albums ever. Such an underrated band.
-

I hate this.

As do I. Looking forward to the new album!
-
Me too, they're definitely one of my favorite bands. :metal
-
I definitely prefer Isolate, but I find myself only ever listening to the first half of the album.
-
I tend to listen to both albums mixed together in a shuffled playlist of awesomeness.
-
:2metal:
-
Last rehearsals the next couple of weeks before the recording starts.(for real this time!). Stay tuned for where and when.
-
I'll believe it when I fucking hear it.
This band has nobody to blame but themselves for "blowing their chance".
And if they're not to blame...then it's been epic EPIC management failure.
-

I completely agree!
-
I don't know how a relatively new and upcoming prog band like CM can afford to take so much time with their recording process.
How much money do these guys actually make?
Symphony X are another very good band who are a constant disappointment with fan interaction and new album updates.
-
^^I mostly agree with that^^
Russ is very busy with side projects...I wonder if the rest of the Symphony X dudes just sit around.
-
I never heard of this band until Kamelot announced the singer would cover for Kahn. My buddy listened to a song or two and said I would like it. I got Isolate a week ago and I absolutely love it. I definitely hear a little bit of DT in there, but that doesn't bother me and I don't see why it should as they overall do not sound like DT (or BG at all).

Going to Oceansound studios to record the drums from nov.15th. Check out this beautiful studio! www.oceansoundrecordings.com

Here's a really good YouTube clip of Abyss live (the sound is excellent). As you can see, they are really good live! I have seen them three times live, and they have been brilliant every time. :metal

EDIT: Here's another form the same concert (Wither):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ITxu2_x-kSw
Mats Haugen's live solo guitar work is sick! The man has skills!
-
Every live clip I've seen, the guitar player is flawless.
-
Good band.
But incredibly lazy.
-
I like a lot this band. From new bands, it is my fav one with SW, but I like more CM.
This band sounds perfect live, that videos are amazing.

A statement from the band on their website https://www.circusmaximussite.com/index2.htm (https://www.circusmaximussite.com/index2.htm)
Apr 28, 2011 - Statement
Decoded message from Circus land....
As many of you have been wondering, what has been, or is going on in the CM camp these days? What is the status on the recording on the new album? Well... To give you the short and brutal version, here is where we are today:
After finishing the drum tracks in November, the band took the Christmas holidays off, presuming to start up right over new years with drum editing, and continue with guitar, bass, keys and vocals right after that. What we didn't plan out as a result of Mats` grueling long hours in front of the computer, editing drums, was that he got arm inflammation in both arms. Because of this, both the drum editing (that was over half ways finished), and upcoming rhythm guitar tracking had to be postponed until further notice. With this, and other personal/family stuff that had to be dealt with, the recording process stagnated quite a bit.
On a positive note: Mats' arm injury has improved a great deal, and the drum-editing is finished, the band has been rehearsing for their upcoming shows in May and we are filming more for the "Rockumentary" this weekend up in the mountains of Trysi (Guess there will be more drunken madness than interviews, because it's Mikey's birthday as well).
We are glad to tell you all that things are looking better nowadays with the speed bumps and hickups out of the way, and that we will be putting the "pedal to the metal" on the recordings from mid May. Circus Maximus is truly greatful for all the support that has been shown, as well as your patience and understanding. There wouldn't be a Circus Maximus without you, the fans. That makes you a little Circus Maximus too... hehe.
All the best,
CM
As you can see, things hasn't really moved forward lately with regards to the new album...
-
Only recently decided to listen to them. I did it because I thought it'd be perfectly in time to be stoked for a new album.. but no.
-
Meh.
Never got the hype about this band. Some OK-sounding watered-down prog metal, but nothing more.
-
Meh.

I see what you mean.. but I quite enjoyed the band. I mean, very obvious DT influences (especially on the first album)... Even though they have some originality - this is pretty run of the mill prog metal.

I see how the first album can go under the description watered down or run of the mill prog metal, but I think the second album is far more unique and better in so many ways, and I also think they now have found their own musical style (not "pioneers" like DT, Tool or Opeth, but still their own style). That's my opinion, anyway...
-
Yeah, the second album is by FAR superior.
-

No way!!!! The first one is much better. Longer songs, better lyrics, more prog.

Longer songs and more prog =/= better songs
Just saying.
-
The First Chapter (the song) and Glory of the Empire are their two best songs, IMO. I also think Sin and Alive are up there with Isolate.

True. In this case I think that makes the first one a better album but then again that's just my opinion.

-
Nice to see they're still alive.
I could have sworn they had vanished into thin air.
-
I'll refrain from my usual negativity and watch.
If they come out with some bullshit about how a lightening storm caused them to lose their masters and the release date gets pushed back to november 2012 I won't ever bother again.

I loved the riffs in that video!!! Can't wait for this album to come out. :caffeine:

ok..I watched the "video blog"...and all it did was re-affirm my stance that this is the worst managed laziest bunch of musicians I've ever heard of.
he hurt his hand "mixing"....W T F!!!
ffs - they are their own roadies......"big show.....little show"......are you kidding me???
they made a couple devestatingly good albums...and now..after watching that, I think they should just break up, and go back to selling paper, or advertising or whatever it is they've been doing since 07. Because making new music clearly isn't high on their priority list.
FUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He has a point though. If they are serious about their music they won't pull shit like this.
-
What shit are they pulling exactly? Do you think the hand injury is a lie? Even if it is, as fucked up as that may be, they do have lives you know.
-
Zook.
I love ya brother.
But there conduct....as professional musicians is inexcusable.
This isn't the first....injury.
These guys have turned into a bad joke.
Their albums will forever be among my favorites...but I'm done giving a shit about them.
-
Despite this tragedy, I feel that if we regroup and understand each other better, we can move on and return to the world even stronger and more confidant than ever before.
-

Seriously, though, as much as I want to hear their new music, they don't owe me anything... so they can at whatever pace they like.
-
So... any news?
-
Circus Maximus are apparently making Chinese Democracy.
-
^well played^
A real shame.
I hope they google themselves and read comments like ours....
-
You know, the best thing you could do right now is put your mind on something else. It also pisses me off that they take forever to release the new record, but there is a lot of other music out there to listen. Some day, maybe ten years, maybe next year we will have more Circus Maximus :tup

FUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I can understand your frustration, but if you love thier previous two albums, why, just because they are a lazy with making a new album, do you not care about them anymore? I don't understand. If DT DID go on that 5 year hiatus, would that mean you wouldn't like DT anymore? The hand injury seems like a joke and obviously they aren't completely committed to being a band, but I don't think it is reason to not care for thier future releases (unless they suck of course). CLearly they are guys with other priorities than Circus Maximus. Sucks for us few fans, but it won't make me not care about thier new album whenever it comes out.
-
I'm being patient. I just hope the new album is good. The first two are brilliant.
-
Hi everbody ! We just wanted to let you know that things are going smooth in the studio. Truls and Glen recorded some kick-ass bass for the album yesterday , while Mats and Michael finnished off the melodies for the song " Burn After Reading" ( working title btw ).
-
Circus Maximus are apparently making Chinese Democracy.
Great line.
-
They didn't announce they were taking a five year hiatus.
We were just left to believe a new album was right around the corner.
And they had such momentum from the first two discs....they've squandered that completely.
-
Love the first two discs
Wish they would've released another in a shorter period of time
Still going to get it when it finally does come out

This exactly... and that's what I've been doing for the past few years. It's not like I'm sitting around JUST waiting for the new Circus Maxiums disc.

Well..I've moved on as well.
But it's painful to keep hearing about them.
I will not be buying the new disc.
I'll be downloading it.
And not paying for it.
THEY OWE ME!
maybe, if it's half decent.........I'll buy the next one.

It's quite entertaining to read YtseBitsySpider's negative comments whenever Circus Maximus is mentioned somewhere on DTF. He doesn't let any opportunity pass. ;)
We've had this discussion many times before, but I don't have any problems with CM taking a long time making the new album. I have faith in them, and I'll certainly buy the album no matter when it's released.
-
^^lol^^
Like a child having a tantrum.
Yup.
I'll admit, it's juvenile and I'll continue to do it.
-
Mats and Michael spent last night working on the vocal melodies for the song " The One " , man is that song going to slay !! Can`t wait to show you all ;)
Seems they are really working on it. Hopefully by the beginning of next year the album will be out.
-
I have just joined their forums.
Heaven help them....oh...and by the way.....they're on summer holidays.
FUCKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK!

FUCKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK!
I imagine that at this point you just hate them a lot :P
-
Their music I love.
The band...sigh.
In my youth I might have gone to their forum and caused shit.
Now, I'm just going to there and ask some serious questions.
-
Seriously, why do you care so much about the album ever getting finished? Do you want their new material that badly?
-
Im more.....irked...that they've taken so long to follow up to such brilliant first/second efforts. It appears to me, from all of my reading that being musicians is really secondary to whatever else is going on in their lives.
Why do I care?
Because I think their first two albums are among the best prog/power metal albums of the last decade or so..and had they come out with a third, fourth, fifth...live, DVD, whatever they'd be HUGE.
I'm annoyed by the complete waste of potential.
-
FB Status update:
"Recording vocals today!;) Mikes most challenging tune on the upcoming album! Its gonna blow peoples mind!;)"
Yeehaw.
-
My mind will be blown when I see a release date. Until then, nothing else matters.
-
There are two types of bands I like.
1- the type that I follow regularly, check out their websites for news and updates, see when/where they are touring and consider going to see if possible.
2- the type that I just buy their CDs if/whenever they come out.
CM is a prime example of type 2.
-
Video posted on their facebook. Some interesting stuff.

-
I can't wait for this, it's taken them a bit longer than expected because Mats (guitarist) contracted some sort of inflamation in his arms whilst mixing the drums.
Awesome band.

-
Am I missing something, because the most recent update on their website is from April. The title of this thread is misleading - after all the time people have spent waiting, I thought they would have revealed the title/cover art/songs/etc.
This album is becoming the Chinese Democracy of prog metal.

In b4 Ytse's rant.

Yes...but surely...he does it with lots...of ellipses...

more of a parabola guy actually.

Glad to be here.

nor do they tour or produce new music for that matter

A Circus Maximus meet and greet = going to work a day job alongside one of the band members. By the end of the experience, you've made 8 hours of minimum wage and don't give a fuck about the new album either.

Such impatience. I waited 8 years for Evanescence to release another album after Fallen. I don't really count The Open Door because it sucks. And alas, they're coming out with a new album in October and it's GOOD!

By that reasoning I waited 12 years for Metallica to release an average album.

Haven't read a good Ytse rant in a while. *sits down and waits....
-
You know what bothers me the most about their 4 year 'delay' in recording?
The fact that they have constantly reminded the fans that they're working on the album. I'm sure I read they were in the recording process back in 2008.
I'd respect them more if they just kept their mouths shut for a few years. It's embarassing.
-
or....like Mike.....said..."hey I think I'm going to take some time off"
They've certainly done that.
I wonder how much of this has to do with whatever label they're with...if they're with one at all. Like maybe they got some bad advice and never signed a second deal? You'd think if they were on a first deal it must have been a 2 album contract. If it was three they'd have been sued.
-
"Like Def Leppard"... jeez, they only took 4 years in the 80s, and at that time, 4 years was an eternity between releases. And Rick lost is freakin arm!
Not holding my breath. Not even cautiously optimistic that what he says will come to fruition.
-
I kind of gave up paying attention to these guys a while ago. I figure if they ever get around to finishing the next album I will hear about it. This is an auto-buy for me.
-
Continues patiently waiting.
-
alright, alright I understand your feelings of futility. I was just struck by the comment "the only thing left to record is the vocals, and everything else is already finished" so ...........I mean.........it can't be THAT far off at this point. just know that the longer we wait, potentially, the more satisfying the album will be!
-
I know I'm being repetitive but seriously, the comment above is calling for a Ytse rant. :corn
-
he was here yesterday, just didn't have much to say about it. not much more fuel to his fire here.
-
The 1st Chapter was the best debut album that I have ever heard and Isolate was just as good. They can take another 10 years to release #3 if they want.
Not all bands can spoil us like DT can. (Just ask a Tool Fan)
-
Just remember that priorities change when you grow up and have kids. That's one of the main reasons why it takes time, because some things are more important than being a successful band. Trust me, the guys have been busy, but not with CM 24/7.
I talked with Truls last night, and it is indeed only vocals left. Once that is done, the only thing to wait for is for the label to print, promote and get it out there.
They want this to get released as fast as possible, believe me.
-
Well that's cool. You always gave off the impression that there was some bad blood between you guys. Good to see there isn't.
-
That was never my intention, sorry if it seemed like that. No, there's nothing like that at all, really. They are the most jolly happy gang you'll ever meet. :)
-
Kind of figured that CM wasnt thier highest priority and thats fine... as long as the new album is good of course

Russian scientists have declared Bigfoot has been found. I believe that story MORE than I believe in ever seeing another Maximus Lazy-us album.

No one is going to believe Russian scientists.

For anyone interested Michael has a new project called The Magnificent. Album seems to be out now.

For anyone interested Michael has a new project called The Magnificent. Album seems to be out now.
https://www.frontiers.it/news/10507/
“The Magnificent” includes the following tracks:
Holding On To Your Love; Cheated By Love; Memories; Angel; Satin & Lace; Love`s On The Line; Bullets; Smoke & Fire; Tired Of Dreaming; If It Takes All Night; Lost; Harvest Moon.
Holy eighties song titles, Batman. LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE. I'm listening to Holding On To Your Love, and yep, it's definitely 80s inspired to the core, although it actually sounds good and not cheesy. Hopefully the other tracks HOLD up.
-
I haven't listened to any of it, but it's on Frontiers so it will definitely be more AOR/melodic rock inspired. Frontiers never really disappoints IMO, great catalog of artists. The guitarist is from Leverage too which might explain a more straight ahead melodic approach.

Think Arrival Of Love. The songs (sampled on the site) are pretty much all like that, but as generic as the lyrical topics are, I really like what I'm hearing. I think that has mostly to do with Michael Eriksen as he's one of my favorite singers.

listening to the songs that are available. Me likes.

Arrival of Love was actually one of my favs on that album, so I better pick this up. I'm a huge AOR/melodic Frontiers rock fan boy though.
-
Im a big Arrival of Love fan, I guess I should check this out.
-
What an 80s timelapse...in a good way.
-
I like it a lot as well; I always got kind of an Innocence Faded vibe from that song.
-
Amazing that he has all this free time for side projects.
Probably as close as I'll get to anything sounding like CM.
I'll check it out.
-
I was planning on a CM night and found this thread... fun read... a lot of anger around their laziness... fair enough though... I can understand Ytse's rant as I have been there with the bands I managed in the past...
This sums it up quite well:
I'm annoyed by the complete waste of potential.
...also found out about 'The Magnificent' thanks to this thread... will check it out tonight.... I simply adore Michael's voice....

good news... I have an unsatisfiable appetite for new stuff!

Thanks for this news. I love what I'm hearing so far.

From their Facebook:
"Vocal booth buildt today..vocal recordings starts tomorrow !"
Maybe by the end of 2012 we'll get the new album. I would bet the end of the world will come first though...
-
Damn... I just discovered this band yesterday. Kind of strange that I haven't listened to them before, since I'm Norwegian and all. Maybe that increases the odds of me getting to see them sometime ;D
-
lucky you...
-
New Facebook update
"Only 2 songs remain and the vocals are done!!!"
This should be finish sometime this year. I'm excited :caffeine:

Cool... I'm glad that Mike is proving Kris wrong...

...nem....you're young and beautiful, but you're old enough to know that fairy tales are just make-believe.
Let me know when the Leprechauns bring this album. They'll be riding shiny unicorns and delivering gold for the tooth fairy.

I came here just to read YBS's comment, and I'm not disappointed :lol

do it again and I'm sigging you spider.

I've said much more "sig'able" stuff to you dear.
The more I read about this band, the more they seem like my generations version of Boston.
Great sound, great musicians but really in it for themselves on their own terms. I guess the similarities end when you consider Boston got locked into a five album deal they wanted no part of....certainly CM hasn't done anything like that. But everything on their own budget, basement studios, building soundbooths, heck they are their own roadies and sound check people.
-

and they are sig'ed in my heart :-*

Based on my band management experience, I can say that... it wouldn't work....
-
...and we haven't seen squat from this band since 07'.
That's what's called...."not working".
-
Great sound, great musicians but really in it for themselves on their own terms.
I don't see the problem. Isn't that how it should be? I want new music from CM just as much ad the next guy, but they don't owe us anything.
I don't see the Tool fans on this board getting all hot and bothered like you do. It's kinda sad, my friend. They're just a metal band.

What the fuck is wrong with that?
-
Nothing.
It's all about what THEY want.
They clearly don't care about success, fans, fame, making money.
And that's FINE.
-
Yet you make it sound like it's a bad thing.
-
..yup.
And that's my damn problem.
I know it.
I recoognize.
Chill pill, get over it, all of that crap.
I know.
Im just being a dick.

Gasp . . . take that back, god If I have to wait that much longer for new Tool, I don't know I'll Implode or something.
On Topic: excited about new CM you know if this does mean their close to finishing.

In northern Quebec this weekend, I was forced to stop my snowmobile briefly to relieve myself. As I half squatted in the bush and pinched a steamy loaf, I looked betwixt my legs and hummed a little Circus Maximus. Can't wait for the new album boys. Should be smokin.

I'm pretty sure they didn't get any promotion on their first two either. And who gives a fuck if they did everything themselves? Circus Maximus will never be a "big" band. They're prog, they're metal, they have the Dream Theater vibe in their music and unless you're Dream Theater, you aren't getting a push. There are plenty of bands that deserve to be huge, but it doesn't always work out that way. Even if CM released a third album 2 years after Isolate, they'd still be in the same boat as now. They have a good amount of fans, but will never be at the Dream Theater level of Prog Metal. Just have to accept it dude. The album will hopefully be as great as their first two, and you should really stop worrying about their popularity and just enjoy the album when it comes out, if you can.
-
Besides, they'd probably just get all shitty and sellout if they got popular. :neverusethis:
-
There will be no new album.
And even if one does manage to get through production....what can we possibly expect?
Nothing of substance I suspect.
Momentum lost, time has passed them by.

Really? I thought they were on Frontiers?

So Circus is having a listening party for their new album on April 7th, and one can apply to go listen and the meet the band! The point is, the album will have been completed and mixed by april 7th, so it's basically done! what say you Ytse?
-
It's a trick to get new publicity, as they lost it all by taking so long. The album will be a mix of remixed versions of the first two. It'll be an April Fool's joke because they're such jokesters, hence their name.

:omg: oh god no
-
Ytse will believe it when they fly him out there for the listening party.
-
if it's finished...
I'll admit error.
Give it every chance and spin...that an ablum that took 5 years to make deserves.
-
Does it deserve more or less of a chance than one that took 2 years to make?
-
The album has the possibility of sucking no matter how many years it took to make. CM has a good track record, but as with movie sequels, they might get the curse of the 3's. I like to be optimistic though. :)

True that. LTE took a week or two to put out two fantastic albums. On the other hand Guns N' Roses took 15 years to put out a shitty album....

Like they're the only band that took 5 years to make an album (ahem, Rush, ahem). I know, not a fair comparison, but still .... I'm sure I'll enjoy it when it finally does arrive.
-
Look at like Dream Theater.
Back with a vengence, and a new vocalist with Images and Words.....then an incredible follow up with Awake...then...some down time..and what came next (new and from the studio) was equal to or better than the previous two which were masterpieces.
I think my point, that gets lost in all my ranting, is how THEY COULD HAVE BEEN HUGE. They were there....right there. And just decided to step back?
wrong.
opportunity lost.
I'll give this album many many tries...I can promise you all that. I want it SO BADLY to be good.
-
Agree with you on all points. I just won't rage on the issue cuz they chose to do things the way they did. ;)
-
I don't quite agree with your argument Ytse. When the first 2 CM albums were released I was really excited about them but after all the excitement disappeared I realized that both albums are good but not great. Comparing them to DT is unfair as they are not in the same level.
I truly don't think that they would have become a big deal if they had released a new album 2 years after Isolate.
-
guys, on a completely irrelevant note, does anyone else get a Queensryche vibe from Wither?
-
I get a Queensyche vibe from Shadow Gallery - Gold Dust. In fact....while Geoff T'aint is off doing another solo-crappolo I think the rest of Queensryche should grab the lead singer from Shadow Gallery and go on tour.
NOW THAT...would be a QR show.
Could you imagine this guy doing Take Hold of the Flame??
-
I couldn't decide really.... it could be good....
-
guys, on a completely irrelevant note, does anyone else get a Queensryche vibe from Wither?
Not really but I haven't really listened to a lot of Queensryche so..
-
guys, on a completely irrelevant note, does anyone else get a Queensryche vibe from Wither?
Yep, The song would be The Mission.
Also, Silence From Angels Above is very Queensryche-esque.

absolutely! Thank God it's only me this time....
-
Vanishing Point went 5 years between Tangled in a Dream and Embrace the Silence and came out much improved. Hell, it will be 5 years between The Fourth Season and the album they are supposed to release later this year. The time off doesn't scare me, I'm just glad I'll have something.

I was more questioning your position that FII was equal to or better than I&W and Awake...

Why did they take these guys off itunes? I'm just getting into it and I would like to check out the music without having to order the cd.

They are on grooveshark

Im a Derek fan.
It was at least....almost as good as Awake...nowhere near I & W.
In my mind when I wrote that I had Scenes being the next disc...my time line was off.
-
I just started listening to them, and I love what I hear. I really hope they get their act together soon.
-
I'm sure it's gonna be fun. From what I understand it will be different.
-
Got the new album back from mastering today. Sounds amazing! Because of that, we decided to delay the contest-announcement until tomorrow, march 16th. You wanna hear som snippets, don't ya?... Thought so...
-
ha but they give us no snippets! fantastic news!
-
There are no snippets because there is no album. It's a complete hoax.

-
There are no snippets because there is no album. It's a complete hoax.
lol, Im not gonna lie... this is becoming more true than the opposite
-
I have to admit, I'm sort of amused at the passion that's been inspired by a band I always considered a second tier progressive metal band. :lol
I am also put in mind of something Neil Gaiman once said when people were complaining about how long it took for George RR Martin to finish A Dance With Dragons:
It's unrealistic of you to think George is "letting you down".
Look, this may not be palatable, Gareth, and I keep trying to come up with a better way to put it, but the simplicity of things, at least from my perspective is this:
George R.R. Martin is not your bitch.
This is a useful thing to know, perhaps a useful thing to point out when you find yourself thinking that possibly George is, indeed, your bitch, and should be out there typing what you want to read right now.
People are not machines. Writers and artists aren't machines.
You're complaining about George doing other things than writing the books you want to read as if your buying the first book in the series was a contract with him: that you would pay over your ten dollars, and George for his part would spend every waking hour until the series was done, writing the rest of the books for you.
No such contract existed. You were paying your ten dollars for the book you were reading, and I assume that you enjoyed it because you want to know what happens next.
When you see other people complaining that George R.R. Martin has been spotted doing something other than writing the book they are waiting for, explain to them, more politely than I did the first time, the simple and unanswerable truth: George R. R. Martin is not working for you.
All of the above applies to CM too.
-
A fair comparison.
For me it's more of a shoulda coulda kind of thing.
I don't consider or I didnt consider CM a second tier prog rock band.
They coulda been top. One of the best.
I'll use a hockey analogy cause I'm Canadian.
Let's say Wayne Gretzky decides to play 2 seasons. And then simply stops while continuing
To hint to fans he may someday play again.
Except years later(nearly five) the game has changed. Better players have come along and he's neither relevant or dominant the way he once was.
What a terrible waste of talent.
-
Ok, you lost me at Gretzky. Comparing what Circus Maximus is to Prog Metal music, by what Gretzky was to hockey is just a bit 'out there'. I'd go with Nedved. 2nd overall draft pick, that didn't put the effort in to things that he could've, thus ended up with a much more mediocre career than was projected.
-
I went with Gretzky for our American and international readers. They're no Gretzky but he's a recognizable commodity.
-
Great! now I have to learn about the Canadian hockey league to follow one of my fave threads :P
:heart miss ya!
-
Don't start you....
-
There are no snippets because there is no album. It's a complete hoax.
Do you have any idea how funny that would be for the rest of us? :p
-
Is there any truth to the rumor that the cd cover art will feature Wayne Gretzky riding a unicycle?
-
:rollin

awesome...awesome in that i was thinkin bout nedved today... was gonna jokingly post something on my buddy's 'Wall' about how voracek shouldnt be wearing #93 for philly, as it surely oughtta be retired.

Hey news! And a release date!
The new CM album is called "Nine", and will be released on June 1st! The band had

This review really gets me pumped for the new album.
Aside maybe from the first CM album I never really thought they sound likt DT at all.
Isolate is heavily influenced by AOR and melodic music and I'm really curious how they've evolved their music by now.
Should be great!
-
This is fantastic news. I absolutely love this band. :hat

Circus Maximus
THE NEW MASTERPIECE ALBUM!
Five years of waiting for CIRCUS MAXIMUS new masterpiece album “Nine” to be released in worldwide June on Frontiers
Frontiers Records is excited to announce the release of the anticipated third album from Norwegian Progsters CIRCUS MAXIMUS entitled "Nine" on June 1st in Europe and June 5th in North America.
Five years after the successful release of the concept album "Isolate", this time Circus Maximus are back with a strong and mature cd. "A lot happened in our personal lives during the past few years ", explains drummer Truls Haugen. "Three of us had kids, plus we also had a several bumps in the road with the production. So it has not exactly been a joyride, but it feels great to finally be done, and after all this time we are ready to unleash our new monster !"
Circus Maximus spent anyway their time also working hard to further refining their sound. With “Nine” they are poised to take their place alongside the upper echelon of Progressive Metal bands. The band’s musical formula is not easy to accomplish – take jaw dropping musicianship, add a singer like Michael Eriksen with a voice from heaven and toss it together with hooks, anthemic melodies and enough groove and heavy riffing that really gets into your head.
For this new record the band presents the best of both worlds – offering their most melodic and at the same time heaviest moments of their repertoire, with class and maturity which is really from another world. “The majority of the material on the new record was written by Mats Haugen and he has taken the music to a kind of simpler and more accessible approach, yet kept the progressive elements and the "nerve" that is Circus Maximus” says Truls Haugen. “We're actually more melodic and heavier on this new record than we've ever been”.
The re-defining sound, the songwriting and the clever production, highlights the band as one of the leading, original Progressive-Metal band around. “Nine” is an absolute contender for Top Album of the year, transcending the boundaries and subgenres of Hard Rock music!
“Nine” will include the following tracks: Forging; Architect Of Fortune; Namaste; Game Of Life; Reach Within; I Am; Used; The One; Burn After Reading; Last Goodbye.
“Reach Within” (Click here to listen to the sample) will be released as a single worldwide on April 27th and can be exclusively listened in streaming on the Frontiers Records webradio www.frontiers.it/webradio - A videoclip for the song is in the works.
Circus Maximus will appear live in some selected shows in the summer before launching a full scale tour in support of the new album. “We will definitely represent this album live to the whole World” concludes Truls Haugen, “We will do more live shows and more touring than ever and we really cant wait to get back on the road!”

Michael Eriksen - Vocals
Lasse Finbråten - Keyboards

Is there a legal version of the song somewhere? I'm not going to buy an individual song now since I'll be buying the album when it comes out.
-
Well it says it's a radio edit so you're actually buying a different version. It's only 99 cents anyway.
It really doesn't sound like anything was edited out though... Then again, only DT songs sound chopped up when edited.
-
Within Reach sounds great.

It's 'Reach Within', but whatever :lol, the song is awesome, yes.
-
Damn, all the samples of the songs sound AWESOOOOOME!! One more month. Can't wait! Frontiers is gonna put a dent in my wallet!
-
Fucking Frontiers FTW!!

all the snippets have lowered my concerned level from maximus-def-con 9...to 6.
perhaps it won't be bad after all

There are many reasons demonstrated in this video as to why the members of Circus Maximus should not be allowed to have video interviews, at least not in English :lol
"The first song Architect of Fortune, in two words: it's long but it feels short"
-

I guess it's your typical case of the label choosing the wrong song as a single. "Reach within" is probably the most accessible song from the album and not representative at all, but the label thinks it has the most commercial potential and therefore they preset the album to the public with it.
The snippets from the other songs sounded a lot more like CM is supposed to sound.
-
^I agree 100%^
and where have we seen that before....Falling To Infinity maybe?
-
The epk has got me very excited for this album. Some good riffs there.
Alot of prog metal samples get me excited though, then I listen to the full album and it's all so samey that it's boring. Hoping that's not the case here.
-
Reviews are looking very promising so far.
Hoping for AOTY material considering the 5 year delay.
-
Can't wait :metal
-
Don't look for leaks here. You may discuss the music, but not how or where to get it illegally.
-
Has anyone listened to it yet?
-

I wasn't talking about where to find any leak. I was just wondering IF it had come out.
But nevermind. I'm listening it right now, and it rocks :metal
-
It was very tightly sealed anyway. Anyway it's out now! And it's incredible!
-
I absolutely love this album! I'm currently on my 6th listen of Nine, and all I can say is that I'm proud to be norwegian. :hefdaddy
-
Amazing album :metal
Also, lol 9 pages. NUGGET!
-
Only listened up to the first proper song so far, but it sounds like the best song from Circus Maximus that I've heard.
-
Okay, I have listened to the album once now. Used and Burn After Reading sounds awesome!!
-
Surprised there aren't more comments on this. The songwriting is much different than their first two albums, but wow what a great album. Architect of Fortune, Game of Life, I Am, and Last Goodbye are my favorites. The extended guitar solo near the end of Architect is just... wow :hefdaddy. I am a bit sad that Eriksen rarely utilizes his high range for this album, but it is understandable considering the style of the songs. His voice sounds great regardless and catchy choruses abound. Cannot recommend this enough.
-
Half heard it in the car but my kids are noisier than the stereo. Will post back when I've given it a proper listen.
-
I should receive my copy within the next couple of days.
-
Here in Canada it is not released until June 5th. I have to wait for it to ship from Amazon as it will not be any local shops that carry music. From the clips I have heard this should be a pretty epic album. I might even wager it will be my Album of the Year as not much has really impressed me this year. My excitement is building can't wait!!!!

:omg:
I'm gonna have a hard time picking my AOTY, and we're only 5 months in. Feel the Power and Flying Colors alone blew my mind.
-
Burn After Reading is my favorite song as of right now... Doesn't come out until the 5th though here in the states :(
-
I want this album SOOOO badly now. You guys got me really psyched, I can't wait for it to arrive!
-
Great album, at first I wasn't too impressed but after a couple of listens I kinda accepted that they really wanna go for the 'poppy' approach and they did a fine job at it... Best songs for me are Architect of Fortune, Used, Burn After Reading and Last Goodbye.
-
Ahh, yes, I will have this album tomorrow morning via Amazon MP3 download. :hat
-
4th spin.
sigh...the comment about the singer's range is spot-on.
Damn....where IS HE!?
ugh.
-
Oh deary me. Eriksen isn't wailing 24/7 on the new album. IT SUCKS!
Anyway, the best part of Nine is at the end of the instrumental section in Burn After Reading. Fucking awesome :metal

Don't you think that the album is a bit too 'poppy' for its own good? I've given it three listens so far and while I enjoy it quite a lot, it just doesn't feel like a masterpiece and I wonder why it took them five years.

There were delays that somehow took up 5 years. About the poppyness: I like it. The Magnificent was my favorite album of 2011, and that featured Eriksen on vocals. That said, Arrival of Love is my least favorite on Isolate, but I still enjoy the poppy side of CM. I'm also one who loves DT songs like Another Day, Surrounded and I Walk Beside You.
-
The Magnificent was exactly that. If Nine is as good, I'll be happy.
-
Nine is The Magnificent minus the cheese.
-
I'm very happy that they got away from the "Let's use triggers and big reverb on everything" production style. Sounds much more brutal now.
3rd spin, sounds brilliant to me.
-
I guess my only complaint about Nine is that it's too short.
-
I can't seem to stop listening to it... The simple, short songs that I didn't really care for at first have more to them than I initially thought.
Production is also spot on... Brilliant stuff
-
Bought the MP3 album from Amazon.com this morning before leaving for the gym. All I can say right now is (https://www.kirksnosehair.com/Portals/0/images/smilies/eddie.gif)
Oh, and (https://www.kirksnosehair.com/Portals/0/images/smilies/wow.gif)
I absolutely LOVE the production. It sounds so fucking huge :hat
-
Gave Nine my first listen today and I must say I'm impressed. Especially since I pretty much hate The 1st Chapter and I'm not a big fan of Isolate. This new album was a huge step forward. They sound more proffesional, production as mentioned above is better and they have learned to "take it easy", a quality that was only partly present on Isolate and totally ignored in The 1st Chapter. But I still don't like Michael's voice, he hits everything perfectly but I don't like what he sounds like.
But still, hats of to Circus Maximus for making this respectable prog album.
-
Nice album. That's all. I was expecting something more after 5 freaking years.
-
Come on ans ship it already amazon...
-
Nice album. That's all. I was expecting something more after 5 freaking years.
Like what? A double disc with 40 minute epic, and Michael hitting an F# for a whole minute while the other guys solo in unison, and a special guest death metal singer growls the most sinister passage to ever be recorded?
-

That's why I never use them for CDs anymore. Only MP3 downloads. If I want CDs I get them from LaserCD.com - he's got Nine in stock now (https://www.lasercd.com/Products/Circus-Maximus---Nine__FRCD557.aspx), and it will ship today if you order it now.

I expected something that is definitely better than their previous efforts. The album is a trade-off for me: some sections on it sound more mature than their previous albums, but the reduced vocal range and lack of long songs are a letdown.
It's not a bad album, just not better than The 1st Chapter and Isolate. The band remains not as good as DT in my book.
As an example: during the time it took them to produce Nine, Haken have written, recorded and released Aquarius and Visions (and a third album is already underway).

None of that. I was expecting something that would blow my mind, or at least something that was more in the line of The 1st Chapter and got neither of those.

"Architect of Fortune" 10:12
"Burn After Reading" 8:48
"Last Goodbye" 10:00
That's a half hour right there. Three tracks.

I took the Prohphecy and the 1st Chapter and dropped them into the playlist of the new album interspaced so as to make the new album sound better.
it's worked.

Very 1st spin and I'm sold... absolutely amazing... I'm blown away... way better than I expected... gonna try to understand what they've done so right to have my whole body shaken at the first listen for the next .. god knows how many days..... seriously.. don't wanna listen to anything else now.... holy fuckin shit!!!! shit!!!!

I can wait the extra days, especially with free shipping and all. I'm just glad everyone seems to be enjoying the album.
-
The thing that pissed me off about Amazon.com was they actually CHANGED my shipping date on a couple of orders. Once they pushed it out three freaking weeks, that was the last time I ever ordered a CD from them. Their MP3 download service is great, though. Blows iTunes away, IMHO
-
Listening on Spotify right now while I wait for the CD to arrive. So far, so good.

way more mature sound compared to the first two albums.... better mixing, better production, better song-writing....
I love this feeling man.... having a brand new album which blows you away.... me happy....
-
The production is stellar. So HUGE sounding :hefdaddy
-
Been spinning this for a while now. My thoughts are that it's a good album, but not quite on the same level as The 1st Chapter IMO. It could have been better.
The production and especially the guitars are top, top quality. Seriously, Petrucci-esque! I do miss the higher pitched vocals though.
On a whole I thoroughly enjoyed Architect Of Fortune, Burn After Reading and Last Goodbye. The shorter songs are much more forgettable. Minus the guitar solos, I don't see myself enjoying them as much. I'd have preferred 6 10 minute+ songs instead - I tink that's what CM do best, the longer, more progressive songs.
Still need to give it more time. CM are a very talented band who fit nicely between the likes of DT and SX - sharing many similarities from both but not quite sounding like either.

yup
all this.
It seems like a bunch of star athletes that took 5 years off...came back....and had a couple brilliant moments....but....I'll wait for the next one to be the masterpiece I expect they can still produce.
I hope I only have to wait a year for it.
-
I just finished listening to it for the tenth time or something.
In NINE, there's a lot of great stuff going on that isn't obvious like, say, big technical instrumental sections (allthough they are present but rather short) or high pitched vocals. It's in the little things, arrangements, layers... It's pretty genius and it DOES feel like a lot of time was spent writing and arranging the songs. I'd say it's done so well yet so subtle that it seems to be covered up by the even bigger portion of 'poppyness' they added to their sound.
The flawless production doesn't help make these details stand out either. It's all blended in so well, but I find that the more I listen to it the more I'm convinced this could be there best work.

well put mister ... subtle is a perfect word to describe what's going on there.. this is an album that one shouldn't hurry up to review... it's one of those that takes time to GET it... me thinks...
-
^^maybe^^
If any band...ANY BAND...is going to get the benefit of extra spins from me it's this one.
I expect my opinion to change.
-
that's good news hun... I'm hopeful :)
-
You should try and interview these guys.........maybe see if they need a sexy hot manager.
-
I was a bit worried when I heard their sound had changed. I really liked 1st Chapter and Isolate, even if the composition quality wasn't spread even across the songs.
However, I really like this album. I can't even remember the last time I heard songs so well composed and structured from a prog metal band. Architect of Fortune is a song that varies and jumps between a lot of different sections, but the flow is perfect and only if you focus you actually understand how varied it is. I Am and The One are for the moment the only songs I don't quite enjoy as much as the others. And all hands down for the production, freaking awesome sound!
Circus Maximus should help out Dream Theater with production and song composition when it's time for the next album ;)
-

Already scheduled ;)
Michael asked me why I came up with the name lady obscure today.... :lol
-
After 5 listens it hasn't gotten any better. :disappointed:
-
replay just Architect of Fortune over and over....THEN.......let teh whole thing run through.
It's not actually THAT poppy.....it's just smart.
I really miss the high vocals though.
-

eaxctly.. their art is just a lil obscure on this one ;D

I don't have any problem with poppy stuff, flying colors is poppy and I love it. This is just meh

It's the battle of the FIFY's! :lol
Seriously, though, I have to stop listening to this album or I'm going to wear it out too soon. Luckily I've purchased a few others recently :hat
-
The only problem I find with Circus Maximus is the artwork. Don't like it. The new is ok, but feels boring. It doesn't fit the music well imo.
-
The album is starting to grow on me after a few listens. I don't think its better than isolate.
-
Just listened to Nine for the first time, and I must say I really enjoyed it. Isolate was good but never really got a lot of plays from me and First Chapter I only got about a week ago and haven't played it yet, but this album is right up my alley.
I love the change in direction from Isolate here. I look forward to listening to it more. It's basically a less 80's inspired version of The Magnificent, with some splashes of prog. Great songs, and a good mix between melodies and complex instrumental arrangements. It's got great production, it's mature, well written and performed well. Good stuff.

Holy fuck dude, go fix that now. And then go watch Gladiator all over again too (you'll know why after you hear Glory of the Empire). Seriously, listen to this as soon as you wake up tomorrow.

I didn't even know the album had already been released; I thought it was later in the month for some reason. Ah well, just got it on iTunes. Really excited!
-
I definitely don't like it as much as the previous albums, but maybe it will grow on me.
-
They've changed their style a little bit in this one. It is more direct and not as progressive as Isolate or The 1st chapter, as they said in interviews. I like the album, but it's slightly different, that's good too. I suppose they wanna try new things.
-
Yet another cool band discovered by lurking around. Thx DTF! :metal
-
I listened to this album four times yesterday and I'm now sold. The bookends of this album are really awesome and the short stuff in the middle is really good as well. Definitely different and maybe that's why it took so many listens for me to finally "get it".
-
I´m i the only one hearing a little of Roy Khan (ex-Kamelot) in Michael Eriksen´s voice? :lol
-
I´m i the only one hearing a little of Roy Khan (ex-Kamelot) in Michael Eriksen´s voice? :lol
Nope. When I first listened to Isolate in 2007, I thought Khan was singing at the beginning of A Darkened Mind. I still think it sounds like him.
-
Roy Khan (ex-Kamelot)
heart breaking :(

I still can't believe he quit a week before I was going to see them. I was sooooo pumped for that show becauseof him. Oh well... I guess that's why Kamelot tried to get Michael to sing on that tour before they cancelled it.

-
I just can't make any sense of it ???
and yeah.. Michael is a beast live....
-
I gave the album a spin. It's pretty good. Definitely a departure from their other two albums, but I liked it.
-
Listened to this. Some really cool parts, but as a whole it wasn't too memorable in my opinion. I don't like Reach Within at all, either. Architect of Fortune was good, though.
-
I listened to this twice so far.
It's pretty good. I think the poppier sound works really well.
I'll need more listens but my favorites so far are "Architects of Fortune," "Burn After Reading," "Used," "Reach Within," and "Namaste." That's like half the album. :lol
-
Just started my first listen, and the album starts with literally the same wind sound as Mouth of Madness.
-
I am absolutely loving this album, I think it's amazing, and because I have only just started listening to the 1st Chapter and Isolate I really only listen to casually where nothing really has clicked in the past, this has sealed the deal for me. Best of the 3 album IMO at the moment. Will be going back to delve into Isolate soon.
-
Isolate is amazing. Enjoy.
-
Yeah I know, I just never listened or gave it as much time as I should have, but now I'm really in the mood thanks to Nine.
Plus, it's pretty clear from watching the EPK that the band will probably keep going in this direction considering their picks for song favs. Mike says Game of Life is his fav, and it's the song along with I Am that resembles closest to the wonderful Magnificent album.
-
The more I listen to the album, the more I think this album has everything what I like nowadays.
Let's take an example, Architect of Fortune:
- The starting is like black metal song, really brutal
- 0:57 the actual intro riff has really much Opeth vibes, really cool!
- 1:18 some technical time structures, :tup
- 1:39 an istrumental chorus, like Breaking All Illusions, I have goose bumps / oh and guitar solo over that beautiful melody, oh yes!
- 2:30 drums, synth and vocals, really emotional and interesting
- 3:07 the chorus, double bass drum comp but something really emotional here too
- 3:58 2nd verse, that "The artificer of destiny" part = hell yeah!! And goose bumps, here you go..
- 5:04 beautiful part, which comes again in Reach Within's intro, reminds me somehow Adam Lambert's What Do You Want For Me
- 6:07 sooooo beautiful, that piano melody is like a cherry on the cake
- 6:54 Hell YES! goose bumps...
- 7:11 that guitar solo is one the best solos made in 21st century. Seriously.
- The last chorus = :metal
- 8:57 another guitar solo, really great
This all makes this record to my new favourite. And I have even ever listened to Circus Maximus before so this is not a fa boy comment (or I'm a new fan boy now ;) )
I apologize my bad English, hope you understand
-
Yeah the guitar solos on Nine is pretty much all out amazing! :metal
-

Agree
-
The solo on I Am is absolutely breathtaking.
-
The solo on I Am is absolutely breathtaking.
It truly is... The whole song is just perfect.
-
I'm listening to that song right now, incredible.
-
I've been trying to pigeon hole this disc into...."what does it sound like"...because it sure sounds like something.
It's a Dream Theater cd.
Seriously.
It's like.....Images and Words.....and Awake...or somewhere in between.
High praise indeed.
And warranted.
-
I've been trying to pigeon hole this disc into...."what does it sound like"...because it sure sounds like something.
It's like.....Images and Words.....and Awake...or somewhere in between.
Exactly! And some parts in the shorter songs made me think of certain In Flames albums (era of 'Soundtrack to your Escape', 'Reroute to Remain') I guess it's a Scandinavian thing
-
This is getting out of hand. Images and Words is a very balanced mix between heavier and softer songs and the poppier songs have beautiful soaring vocals. The music on Nine is a bit too poppy for its own good and the vocals are a step back compared to the previous CM albums, nowhere near the level of JLB during the IaW and Awake era - they sound more like the vocals on Falling into Infinity.
-
honestly.. how are the vocals a step backward?? Because the amount of high notes is less than on the previous albums? Does that make it less good?
If anything, I think the vocals on Nine are MUCH more interesting now: melody wise, structure wise, harmony wise.
-
Nine isn't in the musical stratosphere of I&W or Awake. But after 10+ spins over the past 4 days I will conceide that it is very good and I'm enjoying each listen a little more. I just hope we don't have to wait another 5 years for the next album.

-
The second listen is much better than the first, probably because I was cutting the grass...
I'm liking this very much!
-
So I should pick it up it seems.
-
So I should pick it up it seems.
YES! It's not as busy as I was expecting, and I'm happy about that. Nice flow and very melodic. Some great instrumental bits.
-
It's definitely DT inspired, but not really comparable to Awake or Images.
Saying that, 7:10 of AOF, has ACOS written all over it.
-
there's a whole section of one of the songs that sounds like Learning to Live.
-
Didn't post my opinion on the full album before: Architect Of Fortune is great, it is easily one of the best songs I've heard from this band and probably the absolute best (I only started listening to the other two albums properly around a month ago so can't really say for sure). The short songs on the album have some good stuff in them, but some of them are a little same-y making it feel a bit repetitive, and I can't really think of any that are great overall as there's always something not so good about them (often cheesiness). Burn After Reading is good although the beginning part is a little boring, it's mainly the second half of the song that's good. Last Goodbye, even though it's rather cheesy, is actually really good, but neither of the long songs at the end seem to stack up to Architect Of Fortune.
Overall though I did find this album easier to get into and more memorable than the other two, and already I find myself more likely to come back and listen to it. I'm not sure if it's better overall though, since I do prefer the longer, heavier tracks on the first album to all the shorter poppy ones . I've seen a lot of people complaining about the singer not having as many high notes on this one, and since I haven't had as much of a problem with the vocals on this as I did on the other two I can only take that to mean that avoiding the high stuff so much has been a good thing.
-
Huh. Seeing all these comments makes me have to listen to this, even though I feel like I've grown more and more out of metal.
-
I am definitely getting more into the album. It's still not as memorable as the previous ones, but it's growing on me. Architect of Fortune and especially Burn After Reading are my favorites. The shorter songs have some good stuff, but I feel they could have easily expanded on them rather than structure them so simplistically. The solo around 5:00 into Burn After Reading is probably my favorite Mats solo to date.
-
Good album. AoF is classic CM, and definitely one of their best songs produced. Burn After Reading is awesome too, especially the first metal riff. For most of the other songs, there's mostly just a riff or a chorus that I'll really like, while I feel the rest of the song is merely OK. Reach Within is the only song I don't really like, though; the intro is amazing, but since it's already on AoF, I can effectively ignore it.
-
I'd never thought I could say something like this, but Reach Within is one of my favs so far. I do enjoy a bit of pop music, and even though it is nowhere near a radio hit, it certainly has a lot of the elements of a good pop song. The guys have always been heavily inspired by that, no wonder it's a part of their sound.
But I doubt that DT was a huge influence for this one. That was the bible for the first album, now I think it's more from everywhere else. ;)
-
That's right. I don't hear much DT in this album, and that is a bonus actually. Last Goodbye is brilliant too.
-
The shorter songs have some good stuff, but I feel they could have easily expanded on them rather than structure them so simplistically.
See, I think the opposite. I think they are perfect the way they are and are not missing any elements at all. Expanding these songs would be unecessary, and possibly would drag the quality of the songs down.
-
The album is growing on me. I liked it, but now I like it more. Fantastic album and amazing guitar.
-
Not much DT in this album?
Really?
I think there are obvious references to I&W, Awake and SFAM.
"Last Goodbye" is basically their own "Spirit Carries on" for starters. There's even a line that says 'The spirit carries on' and immediatly after it, a solo similar to the one at the end of SCO comes in. Plus, in "Last Goodbye" there's an 'Under a Glass Moon' passage at 5.20 min. It builds up the same way as UAGM at. 4.00 min.
"Reach Within" guitarriff at 3.14 min. till 3.30 min, is similar to the "Finally Free" guitarriff at 7.15 min till the end.
And to a lesser extent, but still reminded me of it on the very first listen:
Keyboards in "Namaste": 0.44min > Beginning of 'Caught in a Web' (Awake)
Strangely enough all these things don't bother me on this album, I consider them to be 'a tribute' cause most of them aren't blandly copied parts.
-
Those comparisons are very far fetched, none really warrant the mention of a similarity IMHO. Saying that, I'm one to say that DT is a very obvious influence on this album. The only real similarity I found is 7:10 of AOF which reminds me of a part in ACOS.
-

Sure, they are 'far fetched'. b
But if anything, it's proof that, despite what some say, CM is still heavily influeced by DT...
Which is perfectly fine btw, I'm in LOVE with this album!
-
I think I'm going to review this album for WPAPU.
It provides a nice, stark contrast to a certain album that was released this week.
-
Had a nice listen to this album with my Bose in-ear headset at the gym this morning. Still blown away by the songwriting, the production and the performances. :hefdaddy

Assuming you're talking about the Rush album that means this album must be pretty bad musically, but sounds great. :p
-
Completely forgot about the new CM album gotta go get it now.
-
I can't get the chorus from Burn After Reading out of my head.

hoping the new CD is waiting for me in the mail today

I know he's a classic rock fan but namechecks for Winger, TNT, Richard Marx, Def Leppard (Hysteria is his favourite album of all time) in a prog metal interview? :hefdaddy :metal
Still not dedicated enough time to it due to the rush album mainly. Sounds good though.
-
First listen was while playing video games. Underwhelmed and thought it was short. I hope it grows!
-
This is really a great album. I was nervous at first, but I'm really enjoying it. Architect of Fortune is beautiful. :metal
-
Zook and Big Hath were mentioning in the haul thread about the barcodes. Anyone know exactly how they work?
-
get a barcode scanner app for your smart phone and it should take care of the rest. In this case, the QR Codes contain a url that sends you to the pic of the lyrics and guitar tab.
-
Damn, I don't have an iphone. :sadpanda:
-
Androids are compatible too, or do you not have a smart phone in general?

Having in mind that your last album came out four years ago, I initially thought "Namaste" as a statement, because here in Greece it kind of means 'here we are'. But it's obviously about the Indian salutation isn't it?
Haha, how cool is that!? I am glad it didn't mean 'Fuck off' in Greece then, (laughs). "Namaste" is written by Truls and he got his inspiration from the Japanese version of the word, which again is inspired by the Indian word as you said. Cool lyrics by Truls though!
:lol :lol :lol lol'd hard.
Thanks Lowdz...

I have an old nokia. *hangs head in shame*

Not surprising, though. They really have a 80's Pop element to their music.

Don't feel bad. I only got my smartphone 2 months ago.
By the way, Nine is fudging amazing! A masterpiece.
-
Finally got my hands on this one. Architects of Fortune in fact, IS all that and a bag of chips. Still working my way through the rest of the CD but AoF is worth the price of admission to me.
(edit) Holy shit, Burn Without Reading is fucking amazing. :metal

This highlights the problem of the album. Architect of Fortune is awesome and so are Burn after reading and Last Goodbye, but the rest of the album isn't really up to speed.
-
Indeed. Those three songs really overshadow the shorter ones in the middle. I was actually shocked when I looked up and saw I was eight songs into the album. The shorter songs, at least on this listen, went by in a blur. But the long ones are really, really good.
-
You will learn to appreciate them over multiple listens, especially the guitar solos.

Nail. Head.
The shorter songs are nothing special. It's a shame because they are completely overshadowed by the longer three.
Still a solid album, mind. I hope they make another album next year, they have tons of potential.

Guitar work is unbelievable....unbelievable...

I actually think most of the shorter songs are better than the longer ones, so to each his own.
-
The short songs are all pretty awesome... aside from the Intro which is just a 'we can't open with Architects of Fortune... because?'
-
They could have just made Forging part of the intro to AOF. Don't know why they didn't.
@Obscure: if you can land an interview, could you possibly ask if they've been contacted by the 60s Circus Maximus about the name and had any problems? I was just curious if they were ever almost Circus Maximus of Fire at one point.
Also, the whole album rocks. The Magnificent was my favorite album of 2011 so I have no problem with the shorter, poppier songs.
Also, also: Russell Allen has been dethroned.
-

Mason's (DTVT's) review of the new album. I have to admit, while I was happy to see it come out, I had mostly forgotten about the band/album, guys like Ytse and Mason have been salivating over the eventual release for forever now.
-
Couple more listens. The long songs are still the best part, but the shorter ones are growing on me. They just seem to move so fast in between the epics that they get overshadowed. Some amazing guitar work on this CD though...
-
Mike showing how tall he is (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mh31BPMicbk&t=2m45s) :lol :lol :lol
-
First live performance of Architect of Fortune in Oslo last night.... (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZiXMArU_psM)
and Mike knows about Ytse :lol
-
Yeah Mike posts on the CM forum every blue moon, so I'm sure he saw one of Ytse's rants.
-
oh? he thought he might know him from John Petrucci's forum... or DTF .. (yes) but if Ytse is frequenting there.. yeah that makes more sense...
-
Mike browses this forum? Does he have an account?
-
Yes, VIP account, so confirmed by Bosk.
-
 I'd love that
well he said that they have informers... :justjen

good.....when I order their catalogue direct from the label, he can autograph all three for me.
It's the least he can do.

I have a feeling despite all my bitching...he probably would if he could.
They generally seem like pretty good guys.
Where is that interview you promissed?
I check your site...no interview.
Such disappointment.
I may need to find a more up to date webzine for my metal news and info.
(devilish grin)
-
hahahah.... we both know that you're not going anywhere! ;)
Having covered that.. I'm editing the interview today.. If I can convince him, it'll be his very first audio interview.. Otherwise I'll have to transcribe.. you'll have to wait for another day or two.. and miss some amazing stuff :-\
I shouldn't be talking too much as Mike has spies among us
:P
-
lol....why?
to see how much discussion his album is getting?
ya..this thread is more active than their forums trust me.
Oh there are some good fans there.
But really if they want to talk up the new disc they really should come here.
-
I was referring to the stuff I'm giving out actually...
you might be right about the rest.. I've never been there.
-
ahh......
Mike.
She's a pro.
100% trustworthy.
Seriously.
-
I am... yessss...
TY Ytse ;D

Anyone who wants this album, I have a copy for $5, including shipping (US Only). Only defect is the one corner got pinched in shipping resulting in a little damage. It's nothing much, but anal as I am about such things (P.S. I loathe digibooks even more than before), I've ordered another copy and figure I'd give this one away cheap to a forumer who wants it.

Couldn't you just put it in a new clear jewel case?
-
I hate living in Europe sometimes. I'd gladly take it though :P
-
I'll happily take it... you can send it to RJ... I owe him big time anyway....
-
Im going to order one direct from the band.
And they'll autograph it for me.
:D
-
Couldn't you just put it in a new clear jewel case?
Yeah, no kidding. I had so many broken or cracked cases. Frankly, I hate them anyway. Takes up way too much space. Trust me you two... when you're married and have kids, you'll probably toss them all too. I have all my CD's and liner notes in 3" binders. Much more space effective.
-
Nick, you're actually ordering a new CD??
Couldn't you just put it in a new clear jewel case?
THIS!! :lol
I hate when you get a CD and the little circle tabs are all busted. I remember when I got the Live At Budokan DVD, the DVD was so tight, I literally cracked it in half (which I returned to Best Buy and got a new one).

Look at the picture, it's a digipack version. If something breaks on a digipack, you're fucked.
For some reason, the Nine disc I picked up at a store was in a proper Jewel Case ???

Oh I see. OK.
-
Yeah, had this been a jewel case release I simply would have given it a new case, but the inability to easily replace digipacks, along with their flimsy construction, is a large part of the reason I despise them.
Obscure, you should have a PM shortly.
-
thanks Nick!
so yessssss.. let's hear it from Michael Eriksen.... what happened and all..... here's my interview (https://www.ladyobscure.com/portfolio/michael-eriksen-circus-maximus-audio/)
-
I Cool, since its a video ill wait til my train ride home from work to check it out
-
Great! I just gave it another listen... and I swear it's fuckin funny
damn I wish I didn't have to cut out those parts I did .... that guy is hilarious....
-
Great interview, and good to hear there were no legal issues with the name.
-
thanks hun..... and yes it's good know there wasn't any.... thanks for your contribution btw!!!!
-
I've never had a problem with digipacks cracking or breaking, but I constantly have issues with jewel cases breaking, often due to my own negligence or during the actual shipping. Digipacks seem far more durable, IME, though having one break would be annoying.
My copy of Nine that I got from Amazon came as a regular ol' jewel case. Who was shipping out digipack versions?
-
Mine was a jewel case as well. It actually threw me off a little bit, as every album I've bought in the past while has been a digipak of some sort.
-
I didn't even notice it was the digipak version, as mine is only the standard jewel case. I guess that makes sense then Nick. Can't say I've ever had that happen to a digipak. I'm disliking digipaks more and more as time goes on lately.
-
Just starting to get into this band. What I've heard so far is just excellent :metal
-
First post in this thread I think.
Nine is fucking AMAZING. I'm so glad the instrumental sections are kept to a minimum. Just great melodies and riffs throughout. Solos are not too over-the-top and extremely melodic.
-
it's just perfect.... I am loving it to bits!
-
Does the new album have an instrumental track? I loved "Biosfear" and "Sane No More" on the 2 previous albums.

Yeah, I really liked those instrumental tracks too so it was a little disappointing this album didn't have one. But I actually liked this album more than the other two - I had less problem with the vocals on this one so that kind of makes up for not having an instrumental.
-
I was just wondering if any of you circus maximus fans have heard the band AEON ZEN album the face of the unknown , holy shit they sound to close to CM , the only thing i really don't care for so far is the drummer though, but there very borderline ripping off CM , there not as good musicians but im kinda digging this album, just can't shake thethem sounding so much like CM .

The guy behind Aeon Zen plays all the instruments and I think he's a pretty decent drummer. The only similarity the two bands share is that Michael Eriksen sings on a couple of the songs. aeon Zen is your run of the mill Prog Metal band, and if anything, they sound more like Dream Theater.
... Oh I guess they are a Circus Maximus rip off. :neverusethis:
-
just got this album, Last Goodbye is my fav so far.

Today is the first time I've heard them, I'm listening to Reach Within. All I can say is: :metal :D

I find Reach Within to be the worst CM song. Its not like its some bad song, its just that... there is nothing that makes me like it I guess. The chorus is kind of catchy, but just doesn't feel like a good song to me.

Some of my favorites include Sin, The 1st Chapter, and Mouth of Madness.

If you have Nine, then my favorite is Burn After Reading
-
Listened to Nine again today after a couple of weeks off it, it's still amazing.
-
Agreed!!!!! This album is the biggest testament to the talent of these guys (well more of Mats in this case) .. Making a very busy, very proggy album is a lot easier than going for simpler and more poppy sounds but making it this beautiful....
-
I just keep coming back to this album, it's incredible, probably gonna be my top album of the year the way it's going.
And man, I just read through the lyrics of Last Goodbye, that is seriously one of the best, most heartbreaking ballads I've ever heard. I always liked it, but it's grown on me a lot in the last couple of days.

-
Been listening to it quite a bit as well. As good as it is, I still can't rank it above the other two. Isolate is still my favorite.
-
I wasn't expecting to love Nine, but I think it's their best. I have a soft spot for The 1st Chapter, but Nine is just so well-crafted.
It's amazing how seamlessly they're able to blend the melodic bits with the heavy prog riffs. They may even be better at these melodic-to-heavy transitions than DT.
Has the countdown begun for their next album yet? :D
-
They should begin writing it sometime in 2025.
-
BTW, anyone catch the cool little nod to Sonata Arctica they did on Nine?

-CONCERT REVIEW- :woot:
So, I saw Circus Maximus live yesterday and kind of felt compelled to write a review here. Excuse me if it doesn't make much sense, since I'm a bit drunk at the moment and very tired as well.
So, I was at ProgPower Europe, which was great like the previous two years and CM headlined the sunday. I must say, they were very, very good. They were tight and their stage presence was great, apart from the fact that their keyboard player was barely visible, because he was at the back of the stage. Starting out with the two openers from the new album (with Forging as an intro tape), Architect of Fortune and Namaste, they had a strong start. Their singer then asked the audience if they'd like something from Isolate, and with a great response they plays the first two tracks from that album as well, A Darkened Mind and Abyss, both of which were fucking awesome. They played a couple more from Nine and two more tracks from their first album (again, the first two, Sin and Alive) and ended with Game of Life, which the singer introduced as 'my favourite song from the new album, The One and Burn After Reading, with Last Goodbye as the encore.
Very good performance, but not without flaws. First off; the setlist. That's basically all of Nine, apart from Used. I would have LOVED to see more from the first two albums, since Nine is basically my least favourite of theirs, and while it wasn't bad, more from Isolate would have been better. Then; they had 105 minutes to play as the headliner. They stopped after 80. Are you serious? A venue gives you 25 more minutes and you're just gonna stop? That really disappointed me. Again, I would have loved to see some extra tracks, like more from Isolate, or Glory of the Empire, or ANYTHING, other than stopping before your end time. That felt weird. They've been given the time, time other bands would have gladly used and then they don't use it. Very disappointing indeed.
Full setlist (yes, that's the same Elite that filled it in): https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/circus-maximus/2012/sjiwa-baarlo-netherlands-3bdd3094.html (https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/circus-maximus/2012/sjiwa-baarlo-netherlands-3bdd3094.html)
Full thing; it was great seeing them live regardless. The setlist could definitely have been better, especially with the 25 minutes of nothing attached to the end, but the songs they played were pretty flawless. All in all, they were not the best band of the weekend, but they were very close to me. They were the main reason I went to the festival and they were very good.
-
Hey thanks for the great review Elite!!! :tup
Just out of curiosity, who do you think were the best bands?
I'd really love to see Vanden Plas, Nightingale, Alphaezya and Borealis.. any of these?
-
BTW, anyone catch the cool little nod to Sonata Arctica they did on Nine?
Still wanna know what this is all about.

I'd really love to see Vanden Plas, Nightingale, Alphaezya and Borealis.. any of these?
Akphaezya and Borealis were awesome. Probably my favourites, also because I had never seen them or heard them before. There was a band called Thurisaz who were also very good. I had seen Vanden Plas before before and wasn't really impressed with them and again they didn't really deliver for me, but they were very good nonetheless, just not really my thing. They came across as a weaker version of Seventh Wonder to me. Nightingale was - I'm very sorry for any fans - unbelievably boring. Literally everything sounded the same, there was nothing remotely interesting about the songs they played and they had next to no real stage presence, apart from the guitarist taking off his shirt, which I always find a ridiculous thing to do.
As for other bands, there were a couple of other bands I saw there, but I wasn't there all weekend, so I might have missed some cool stuff. I was bummed to have missed Shattered Skies, which I'd have loved to see.
-
I'd kill to see Nightingale, they never tour.
Also, what about that cool little nod? I listened to Nine about three times, and Sonata Arctica for more than six years, but I caught no nod.
-
Well, I don't know what it was. It might have been because I was tired, but they didn't really do anything for me, which was weird because the stuff I have heard from them I really enjoyed.
-
Oh well, maybe that's why they don't tour :lol
-
And I don't know that much of their stuff, so that might explain why it all sounded the same. Also, I wasn't in the crowd when they played, but on the balcony. I usually love standing on balconies, because you get a great view from the stage, but it can also damage your experience in some cases, apparently.

Well if you're interested in checking out why I adore them as much as I do, I could recommend you their second, or their third album :)

This.

I'm gonna go back and re-listen to this. If no one else hears it, then maybe it's just me.

What song/s are you referring to from both bands?

Gotcha... Bummer.. I really dig both Akphaezya and Borealis... Great that you enjoyed them a lot!....
Next year I'll be there and at Celeb8.... also I've got to see Circus Maximus sometime....
Hey.. cahecking out Shattered Skies now.. cool stuff :omg:
-
I think I read somewhere that the guys in Circus Maximus all have day jobs and that the band is not something they do "for a living"
That might explain why they didn't do a longer set - they may not have been able to prepare enough to play for that long.
-
That would explain it, yes!
Also, Nem, I'll meet you there next year :p yeah, I really enjoyed Akphaezya, that singer was incredible, fucking amazing performance! And Shatterd Skies is awesome indeed :)
-
Thanks for all the info Elite, would LOVE to meet you there :)
-
I think I read somewhere that the guys in Circus Maximus all have day jobs at a box making factory and that the band is something they do "for shitz n giggles"
That might explain why they took 64 years to release another disc.

Good to have you back YBS.

we need some bitchin' here! :p

Ya....I've been off the interwebz for a bit.
Miss my peeps.

I'm all about accuracy. Well done. :tup
-
LOL...you were paraphrased slightly there....glad it's ok.
-
Yeah, I couldn't remember exactly what they had said. The main thing is I can really, really appreciate the position they're in, because it's exactly like my band. Except my band will probably never tour, since we all live on different continents :lol
-
I think I read somewhere that the guys in Circus Maximus all have day jobs and that the band is not something they do "for a living"
I imagine this is probably true for a lot of bands in this genre...
-
Just a few. Even bands like Spock's Beard and S-X has trouble making a living as full-time musicians
-
Can I just say how awesome NINE is?
It's awesome!
-
It's magnificent :neverusethis:
-
:icy:
-
Fantastic album, didn't like it at first. Not because it's bad, but because I didn't like that CM was changing their sound, but once I got over that I realized it's arguably their best.
-
Just had a chance to see the gang live for the first time since the release party for Isolate. Holy frickin' banana mackerel sarnie, that was really good. I suggest you go if they come to a theatre near you.
-
I would if they made it to new York city.
-
I would if they made it to new York city anywhere in North America
-

Aren't they playing next year's Prog Power?
-
That's great for those on the east coast.
-
Isn't that in Atlanta? They should do that in nYC for selfish reasons.

Fixed for me
Also, It should happen sometime in March. I don't know if I'll be around when it happens.

Dude, people who live in America don't want to visit Utah :lol
I just really hope it works out that I can make the 5 hour trip to Atlanta next year. I'll either cancel class or get one of the other chemistry profs to cover for me...or give a test that day, then anyone can cover for me.

But we have so many national parks and ski resorts. There's also The Huntsman Cancer Institute (one of the leading cancer research facilities in the world), Temple Square, Rainbow Bridge, and most of Lake Powell. Our state bird is the Seagull for crying out loud!
[/"mystateisawesome"rant]
-
Utah is the most scenic state in the country. I love it.
-
Was Nine any good? I have the two other albums. I strongly prefer Isolate to The 1st Chapter.
-
In a word... YOU DON'T HAVE IT? GO GET IT NOW!!!!!
-
It is different than either of the previous album's, but if you judge it on its own merits you will find it very good.
-
There are more bands than you think that have full time jobs and families, and they fit music around these.
A lot of the bands I'm into from Finland/Sweden/Norway, that are pretty much studio bands only and only rarely play live.
-
Nine is great, It's probably tied with Clockwork Angels for my Album of 2012 spot.
Then again, I don't have any other Circus Maximus albums, so I can't say how it relates to their other stuff.
-
Was Nine any good? I have the two other albums. I strongly prefer Isolate to The 1st Chapter.
It's a mixed bag of the best AND worst stuff they've ever written - although their worst stuff is still pretty decent :metal
Essential listen for any CM fan.
-
Easily their best album and easily one of the best albums of the year.
-
I guess I'm the only one around here that thinks that these guys have been going down since they started. To me their first album was the best and the next two have been kinda disappointing after such a good start.
-

The first was definitely the catchiest one, although it drew too much from DT and SyX for my taste. Isolate was a step forward in individuality, although not a significant one. And I can absolutely barely stand Nine, it's a good thing they've developed their own style and they seem pretty comfortable in those waters, but I don't like it. It has two or three amazing songs and I just roll my eyes at the rest. Maybe I just need to grow some appreciation, but seeing how I've heard it more than 10 times at the infamous ex-boyfriend's house (who's pretty much freaking over them) I don't think I ever will.
-
If I were you I'd give it some time and then try again cause it sounds like the fact that you infamous ex was all over them is affecting your objectivity ;)
On the other hand, I agree with you. They have made steps towards building their own sound and I feel the way you do, I don't like were they ended up.
-

Was just thinking the same thing. I'd rank them 1st Chapter>Nine>Isolate. Not that I don't like Isolate, but the other two are easily superior.
-

Since we're best friends, I would have expected it to affect me positively rather than negatively! :lol

Your infamous ex is your best friend? Freud would have a coke fest over this :lol
-
Your infamous ex is your best friend? Freud would have a coke fest over this :lol
Well, Freud is dead, and our friendship is very much alive, so...
I am apologizing for driving this thread off topic, but it's pretty straightforward to me that two people who had a long relationship and who didn't break up for hating each other would be mature and remain friends, and that's what I often see in life, but pop culture goes on and on about the jerk ex-bf and the bitch ex-gf stereotypes... beats me.
-
I agree but it struck me as odd that you called him infamous and then said you were best friends, that's all
-

Ah that :D I have inside jokes with myself sometimes, that's all I will say regarding the usage of that word :D
Speaking of good CM songs off Nine, Burn After Reading is quite cool.
-
I'm currently listening to The First Chapter. It's been a while. I'll give Nine a listen after this and see if I get to like it more.
-
Yeah, they deserve second chances because they're cool guys and good musicians.
-
Personally, The 1st Chapter bored me to death (IMHO). I found Isolate a lot more accessible and a lot more enjoyable.
-
It took a while for The 1st Chapter to click for me while Isolate was immediate. When I first heard the 1:20 sample of Reach Within, I was a little worried, but I really like that song, and Nine is really awesome. Circus Maximus have done no wrong in my ears.
-
Circus Maximus have done no wrong in my ears.
Word.
-
I've been listening to all three albums for 2 weeks now, never had heard of them before. But I really likle them. The first album is "ok", but nothing more, I think. #2 and #3 are both very very good - at the moment I like "Nine" a little bit more than "Isoate", it's easier to listen - but I think the second one may grow... we'll see.
-
Nine is still amazing.
-
First time I listened to Nine, I didn't care for the shorter songs, but the album was a grower for sure. For me now it's already as memorable and like able as the first two.
-
1st Chapter isn't as accessible on first listen like Isolate/Nine, but that is why I think it is a better album. It takes time to digest and opens up to you slowly. For me, it just has more heart.
-
I'm checking out Circus Maximus for the first time now (the Isolate album), and damn I am pleased. ;D
-
BUMP!
New video for Namaste!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hAzBQQOc9II
-
:hearts:
-
I hope the added screaming isn't a sign of things to come. I know they do that part live like that, but I just hope they don't start adding screaming in their music.
As for the video... eh. I'm not into music videos. It looked nice I guess.
-
The background vox from the drummer? Nit picking, great song and video.
-
Isn't that in the original?
-
It is, but it is mixed quieter. The Single version of the song has louder screaming by the drummer.
I don't mind a bit of screaming to spice things up, but I prefer it mixed lower (like on the album version).
-
Well, in the original, they are more like whispers. I'm not complaining because I'll probably never listen to the single version again, seeing how it's only in video form, and I just don't really care for music videos.
I just hope this doesn't become a normal thing in the future. Circus Maximus doesn't need the gimmicky screaming and growling.
-
I wouldn't call it gimmicky. Harsh vocals are a good way to make Prog Metal more versatile as long as they are done well (read: not like Mike Portnoy does them). The muffled screaming on the album version is perfect IMO.
I love how Haken use death growls in the track Streams to take the music from sheer beauty to insanity and back again in a matter of two minutes :metal
-
I've gotten to like some growls over time, but the growls in Streams are awful.
-

Forging
Architect of Fortune
Namaste
I Am
Reach Within
The 1st Chapter
From Childhood's Hour
Game of Life
Burn After Reading
Last Goodbye

I love this band. Both The 1st Chapter and Isolate are always on my mobile devices. Mouth of Madness is probably my fav song atm. Concerning Nine, I really didn't like it at the first listening but it slowly grew and I can say is pretty cool now. I've seen them live twice and had the pleasure to meet them, great persons and awesome musicians.
-
CM are playing the friday night of the Firefest Festival in the UK next October. May have to go...
-
That's quite a long time from now.
HAVE FUN!
-
That's quite a long time from now.

It's big announcement night here! It will be the last Firefest. It's been a decent Melodic Rock Festival for the last 10 years and I've been to a few though not in the last 5-6 years.

Sooo. Watching randomly on their FB, they are in the process of rehearsals for new material. I think this means there is a new album coming to our way ;D
-
Yeah.
In 2020.
-
So, they have a history with taking the time? :sadpanda: Even when they are in the process of rehearsals/actually playing stuff?
That live release on YT looks cool, will watch. Missed that.
Since Nightwish, Symphony X and Blind Guardian suddenly came to life with new studiomaterial this year (after taking their damn time), I am checking all my favourites to see if more show up from the dead (or so to say). Would possibly even a more epic year if these guys come with new stuff.
-
Yeah. They took their sweet time with Nine, and while it was worth it in the end, I do still think that... I think it was six years is a little much. Though what aggravated people most was the fact that they kept posting stuff like "It's almost done" and then nothing happened.
-

It was a good album but not worth a 6 year wait.
-
Oh dear god, just browsed trough this topic :lol Yeah... lets not expect too much for the coming time.

Kamelot (not from the dead) and their new singer Tommy Karevik's band (from the dead) Seventh Wonder are supposedly coming out with albums this year... heck Seventh Wonder released a music video 7 monthes ago and still hasn't given a release date for the album.
-
Seventh Wonder is very VERY hit and miss anyway. I think Tommy is a great singer, but he really overdoes it, and I love melodic catchy music. And how many times can they do the dedehlah dedehlah thing with the guitar and drums?
Circus Maximus is doin' it right though. Yes, they have prog cliches, but not as bad as SW.

You're crazy Zook. :P And I have no idea what you mean with the dedehlah dedehlah thing - care to give me a timestamp?
-
I could give you lots of timestamps.
Later.
-
...still waiting for an example what "dedehlah dedehlah" means.
I too think that Seventh Wonder's music is a bit too samey, but I don't get the meaning of "dedehlah dedehlah".
-
It's been a busy week.
When the guitarist does a run and the drummer follows it with double bass. They do that a lot.
-
HOT NEWS!!!
So, who`s up for a new Circus Maximus album?!?!
"Let the recording commence"
On the 17th of august we will start recording our 4th album! To be released in early 2016 (Album title TBA)!
Psyched?
Sharing = Caring
:metal :corn
-
Most excellent.
-
I was just thinking about them the other day since I realized I don't have their albums on my phone. Awesome news, but I guess early 2017 might be more realistic given their history.

About time.

Surprised this hasn't been posted;
https://www.blabbermouth.net/news/circus-maximus-to-release-havoc-album-in-march/
Frontiers Music Srl will release "Havoc", the new album from the Norwegian progressive metal CIRCUS MAXIMUS, on March 18, 2016.
"Havoc" is CIRCUS MAXIMUS's highly anticipated fourth studio album and one that will certainly make a huge impact on the progressive metal scene. The band's musical formula is not easy to pull off. Take jaw-dropping musicianship, singer Michael Eriksen with a voice from the heavens and put it together with hooks, anthemic melodies, and enough groove and heavy riffing to satisfy any prog metal fan, and you've got the CIRCUS MAXIMUS sound.
"The theme on this new album is about moments and experiences in life that lead to love and hate," says guitarist and producer Mats Haugen. "Metaphorically, it's about succumbing to fire and striving to cope with the aftermath of decisions when overshadowed by the love we have for others and ourselves."
Musically, the band offers the usual mixture of very heavy moments intertwined with extremely accessible melodies. Songs like "Pages", the opener "The Weight", "After The Fire" and "Remember" show the full range of the CIRCUS MAXIMUS sound. Still, the album has very heavy songs ("Havoc") and slow and melodic moments ("Loved Ones") too.
The band is set to tour heavily in support of this new release with shows in Europe, U.S. (they are already confirmed for the ProgPower USA festival) and more territories to come.
The redefining sound, the songwriting and the clever production, highlights the band as one of the leading, original progressive metal bands around.
"Havoc" track listing:
01. The Weight
02. Highest Bitter
03. Havoc
04. Pages
05. Flames
06. Loved Ones
07. After The Fire
08. Remember
09. Chivalry
CIRCUS MAXIMUS is:
Michael Eriksen - Vocals
Mats Haugen - Guitar, backing vocals and programming
Truls Haugen - Drums, backing vocals and percussion
Lasse Finbråten - Keyboards, samples, programming
Glen Møllen - Bass

Cool! Didn't see that last update yet, that's a pretty promising tracklist + rough description.
-
Sounds like it should be a good continuation of Nine.
-
I saw that they'd released the artwork earlier this week, but I've been off the Facebooks (to avoid Star Wars spoilers), so I missed this.
:caffeine:
-
I like the artwork. Simple and elegant. This is one of my more highly anticipated releases from next year.
-
Looking forward to it . Although I would like to see them change things up a bit - they can get a bit "samey".
-
Awesome news! Last album weren't we all complaining about how long it took to get out? Maybe that's why Im surprised this just popped up seemingly out of no where for me (but I don't follow them on social media so maybe that's why).
-
Looking forward to it . Although I would like to see them change things up a bit - they can get a bit "samey".
I thought the last one had lots of variety.
-
Is it just me, or is the album cover a bit too upscaled? It seems too blurry and pixelated.
-
The Weight is now on spotify! :metal
-
Check out "The Weight" from our new album, HAVOC and let us know what you think! HAVOC will be released on March 18th in Regular and Deluxe Editions! The Deluxe Edition features one bonus studio track and a bonus set of live songs recorded in Japan in 2012. Pre-order the CD or MP3 version from Amazon Music here: https://radi.al/HavocAmazon (All MP3 pre-orders include an instant download of "The Weight".)

Fairly standard/typical CM, which I adore.
Would listen again.
-
Saw this this morning! Really looking forward to the album :heart
-
I like the song, but it seems slightly ironic that the first song released from an album called HAVOC is poppy and relaxing.
-
the new song almost put me to sleep.
-
Good song. Same style as Nine. Maybe it is my ears, but with all the Mangini snare talk in the DT part of the forum I somehow thought the snare in this song sounded about the same as MM on The Astonishing. I wonder if that will be commented on, or if it is a preconcieved bias against Mangini....just a speculation.
-
I like it, but it's not really anything getting me excited honestly. Probably need a few more listens before I start to really enjoy it though.
-
That song was pretty boring on first listen.
I'm sure it'll grow, but the bands starting to turn into The Magnificent.
-
I like it, but it's not really anything getting me excited honestly.
Sort of my general assessment of their music. Though Glory of the Empire came up on internet radio the other day, and made me remember how awesome of a debut The First Chapter was.
Who was the guy here who always went off on how CM took forever to release material? It was something like Ytsebitsyspider I think.
-

You got it. He quit the forum a little over a year ago, for reasons unknown.
I agree with the assessment. It's why I've stopped listening to pre-released tracks - they're invariably the least-best ones from the album. So far, that's supposedly the case for upcoming releases from Primal Fear, Avantasia, and Nordic Union. I know they're getting my money on release day, so I'll just hold off until I get the whole album.
-
Same here, I don't often listen to singles ahead of full album releases. When I do listen to them, it's usually just for a quick 30 to 60-second piece, just to hear if (for example) a death metal band like Opeth has decided to become a 70's King Crimson tribute band and radically altered their sound.
To me, listening to singles kind of takes some of the punch away from the album when it drops because it removes a lot of the mystery of what the album is going to sound like. It also sets expectations that are usually completely incongruent to the true impact of the album as a whole. It's like watching a key scene from the middle of a complex, plot-twisting movie before seeing the moving from the beginning. I find that a single song almost never represents the overall quality or even the direction of a given album, just as that scene from the complex movie may look really cool but it lacks meaning and thus kind of falls flatter than it would if presented in the full context of the surrounding work.
-
Well now when I have heard that song like 5 times, I can say my opinion.
The intro riff is quite cool, like a left-over from Isolate. But when the vocals kicks on, the whole felling disappears. Somehow Michael lacks here. The chorus is really weak, forgettable.
So hopefully this will be one of the weakest tracks on the new album.
-
It's too hard to avoid listening to the singles for me. Since I also agree that the singles often do not represent the album, I don't put too much stock into my opinion of the single, unless it's just something so different. This single doesn't sound much different from something that could have been on the last album.
-
Will listen.

They have released new song, Havoc in Spotify!
After one listen I have to say I'm really disappointed about these two singles. They have forgotten their progressive side totally. They went to the right direction with Nine with some poppy elements but this new album sounds like too radio friendly pushed album. Very talented musicians are sadly underused here. Hopefully there are still better songs to come....

I wouldn't say they have forgotten their prog side but this last song sounded like nu metal which is not really good....
-
Wasn't really into that song at all, either. For their heavier moments I wish they had implemented some great headbang-able moments like on Namaste and Architect of Fortune, instead it just sounds, I don't know, predictable?
-
I haven't listened to those, I'll wait until the album comes out... hoping for the best, NINE was amazing!
-
Well that was... Different.
-
A bit bizzare coming from CM but pretty good, I think.
-
Well, my expectations've been tempered in a big way.

New song in youtube form.
Um, yeah well this sucks.
-
I respect them for doing something different. This is 90s grunge rock, imo. Certainly, if this is the style of the whole album, I'll be disappointed. But I gotta think this is just something for a little variety.
It wasn't terrible. I wouldn't say this did anything to improve my excitement, but I'm also not too worried about the album as a whole.

Yeah, this. Given the disparity between this and 'The Weight', I don't think either are a reliable indication of the rest of the album.
-
I'll definitely check it out, but my anticipation now has decreased.

Damn, it definitely has a 90's vibe.
-
Geez- what to listen to today? Dream Theater Superstar or Smells (a bit) Like Circus Maximus. :-\
I am coming around to the DT a bit though. :)
-
Brent, the Dream Theater is awesome. Just let it wash over you.
-
The song sounds like average mid/late 90's grunge/nu-metal. And I do not think their sound and vocals fit that type of music at all here. I think it is crap, and I like 90's stuff.
Well, I hope they were having fun making this song, I just hope it doesn't even remotely represent the album in any way. Other song is good enough, heard it once.
-
I think it is crap, and I like 90's stuff.
Ditto.
-
I think I like this song better than the first single, but that's not saying much.
Definitely sounds like Marilyn Manson.
Not really my cup of tea and I hate what they did to his amazing vocals.
I really have little interest in this album now, I'm sure I'll give it a shot because the rest of the album could be good, but I am not anticipating much here.
-
I've spent the last few years not giving a shit about metal, prog, Dream Theater or anything of the sort... But I enjoyed these. Nice to see bands doing what they want, even if it's far from what it used to be.
By the way, there's one new tune I've heard live at soundcheck that is absolutely stunning, so you all have something to look forward to. I don't know the title, but it's in there somewhere. It's one of the big catchy melodic ones. :)

It's good to see you never took the Kevin Moore route when you left the band. Are you still doing anything music related?

Sure, did even play a show with CM last year, celebrating 10 years. Terrible playing, tons of fun!
Apart from that, a couple of albums and selling instruments and gear in the local music store.
The music industry is a vile place. You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy. I like to be outside of it. :)
-
Hmm.
Just listened to the new songs. I really liked Nine, so my expectations were up.
Havoc, more than anything, is a bit generic. It's not awful, but it's not great either.
The Weight is better, but sounds like a B-Side from Nine. Now, again, I really like Nine, so there are worse things, but it just makes me want to listen to songs from that album instead.
I'll still check out the album.
-
I discovered this band in 2005. Loved the first two albums. Loved 2 tracks and liked a 3rd off of Nine. The rest of the album for me is unlistenable. Hoping that there are some hidden gems in the upcoming for those of us who liked the band's original sound.
-
I don't mean to beat a dead horse, but the dislike ratio on the 'Havoc' video is... really bad. 241 dislikes to 311 likes (still more likes, but the rest of their discography have got like 95% likes at least). Operation: Mindcrime - The Stranger got better than that and even that's a rare low (speaking of GT, the lyrics on the song 'Havoc' sound like some of his worse lyrical output and that's really bad). I wonder what the band think about this reception.

It sounds like a Marilyn Manson song, so it's no surprise it's so polarizing.
The difference between Circus Maximus and Operation: Mindcrime/Geoff Tate is that Tate has a lot of hardcore fanboys who will upvote anything he makes.

New song "Pages" from the upcoming album is now on Spotify!
The title track and The Weight were already growing on me a bit but this song basically confirmed that I want this album. Great balance between heavy and soft they got going on here, liking this more than half the stuff on Nine already.

I'm on the other side of the road on this one. While I liked this song better than the previous 2, it's still underwhelming when compared to their previous work.
-
I agree with Nekov.
I am encouraged by this song--a step up from the previous two in my opinion. But better than half the stuff on Nine (not to mention the brilliance of 1st Chapter and so on)? Not yet, not for me at least.
-
This new song is pretty shit, just like the first two. Don't know what's going on here with this band. At least there's some decent soloing on this one I guess.
-
Heard it once and nothing got me to listen again. So sad because I love Nine so much....

Same, easily top 5 of that year.

I think the new one is really good actually.

Yeah. One good song, and the rest a snoozefest. I hope I'm wrong, but these songs so far are NOT WELL.
-
I have that album, but don't remember much from it, so I guess you're right. Good singer though.
-
I'm almost not even interested in hearing it based off what you guys are saying and what I heard from the first two songs.
I'll check it out at some point. Damn this really sucks.
-
Another disappointing song.

Nah, check it out. It's good. Best of the three.

Yep, a damn shame.

Doesn't do anything for me, but this song isn't bad. But yeah, this is the point where I am becoming worried about this album unfortunately.

It's three songs, time to be worried big time.
-
The Weight and Pages are both good IMO, with Pages being great. I honestly don't see what's wrong with either of them, though maybe I can see people thinking that The Weight was a bit boring. I'm pretty confident that the album will be good. Maybe not as much as the first three, but still good.

The album has been available on the Japanese Itunes store for a few days ago and can be purchased with a Japanese Itunes gift card.
After giving the album maybe 6 listens or so, I can say that I'm mostly satisfied. It's a very good album, though not quite at the level of Nine. It's more commercial, sure, but there's still plenty of good musicianship to be heard. I was never particularly worried that the album was going to be bad, as upon their release I thought The Weight and Pages were pretty damn good songs. Fortunately for all the fans who freaked out upon hearing the title-track for the first time, it's definitely the albums weakest link. My biggest disappointment is probably with the closing track, but I don't want to give too much away. I'll let you guys make up your own minds.
My favorite tracks:
"After the Fire" - this is the track everyone should be pretty happy about. It brings the prog. Definitely the albums highlight.
"Loved Ones" - A great ballad that takes a couple unexpected twists and turns.
"Remember" - Liked "I Am"? You should dig this. Poppy with a wicked solo and beautiful surprise near the end.
The album continues the sound from Nine, but it's not just Nine 2.0. I read some Youtube comments for "The Weight" that said it sounds like a Nine reject. Perhaps, but the album for me shows a continued diversification of the bands sound. There's more hard-rock, more poppy synths, but still a fair share of keyboard-guitar unisons, fantastic solos, and odd meter playing. I enjoy Isolate as much as any CM fan, and consider it to be one of my favorite albums, but as someone who can also enjoy other styles of music outside of the DT and Symphony X prog sound that initially inspired these guys, I can safely say this is a very good album.
8/10
-
You're so lucky. I'd pay a good amount of money to be able to listen to it right now.
-
You can! If you change your region to Japan, you can then create an account using a prepaid gift card bought on one of several websites. The standard album costs 1350 yen and the deluxe with the Live in Japan songs is 2000 yen. I bought 1500 yen card for about $17 and most sites that sell the cards have tutorials on how to create an account. It's not too difficult. I already have the deluxe album preordered on Amazon, but I decided I couldn't wait another two weeks and I'm pretty happy to give this band my money twice.
-
I think I'm pretty much the only one in thinking this but I thought the title track was really good, The Weight is my least favorite out of the three but I like all of them quite a bit, so I'm not too worried about the album. Thanks for sharing your opinion though, looks promising!
-
Yea after my initial "wtf" reaction upon hearing the title-track and accepting it for what it is, it's definitely grown on me. I'm not skipping it while listening to the record, but it is my least favorite track. I'm enjoying the album more and more with each listen.
"After the Fire" really is pretty incredible. I can't wait for everyone to hear it.
-
I went and checked out After the Fire out of curiousity, and yeah, pretty good track. Maybe I should listen to this album after all.
Edit: I just gave this album a spin, and well, it seems to be not my thing. After the Fire is great, Flames and Loved Ones are alright and the rest ranges from meh to what-the-hell-where's-the-skip-button for me. I'd say everyone who gave up on this album should listen to After the Fire on YouTube and that's about it.
-
Drag. I'll listen, but unfortunately it looks like this won't be a purchase for me.
These days, an album that's just 'okay' or 'mostly satisfied' just doesn't cut it anymore.

:iagree: ... even if it's from a band I adore and have 100% supported. It just makes it especially disappointing when they put out something mediocre - ala The Astonishing.

This album isn't even on my radar.
-
I actually don't mind the title track... it's just not quite their typical style.

I actually wish I didn't waste my money on TA.

Listening to it right now. :metal
-
One listen and I already like it more than the new Redemption. Oh and yeah the title track is definitely the weakest song on the album.

This is sad as TA is amazing. I'll get around the CM when I have the time, it's not exactly high on my list given the songs I have heard.

I actually prefer the new Redemption, and even that is middle of the road.
-
I haven't actually heard Havoc or TAoT yet, but I'm fairly confident that I won't be underwhelmed by either. Probably because I'm quite generous when it comes to certain albums that are considered middle of the road by bands I like.
-
Biggest disappointment of the year so far.
It seems to lack everything that I love about CM, the pop vocal melodies, the prog bits and tight sound.
The first half of the album is weak, it's only the really the last 3 or 4 songs that save this from being a total disaster.
Nowhere near the brilliance of Nine.

After about 5 listens, Havoc is an 8/10 for me.

This is shit IMO. Not sure I'll even give the album a listen at this rate, so disappointing.
-
Okay, that one was terrible, not even going to comment on the video either.
I'll still give the album a try once it's on Spotify but my expectations have certainly lowered.
-
.... what is this garbage? Not even the music, the video is terrible. Nice guitar solo is about all I can say here.
-
I personally thought that The Weight was very good. Sadly, that's where it ended for me. A real disappointment.
-
That video was basically a cheesy, higher-tech version of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and I didn't care much for the song either.
-
I didn't see the video but I listened to the song this morning and I actually liked it better than the rest of the songs they've released so far.
-
Gonna refrain from listening to that song, album is only 4 days away. I think releasing nearly 20 mins of an album before release is a bit too much.

Agreed and even more so since every extra minute released has turned me off more.

I think they did this after seeing a lot of criticism for the first songs they released. I think it's no coincidence that the last 2 songs are more in line with Nine than the first 2 since those got blasted in FB and Youtube.

I's say that 2 out of the three songs I've listened to are actually really good.

I can see that for the title track, but not for The Weight. The reception for that was pretty decent.
-
Still, they haven't released three best tracks on the album, in my opinion of course. And going off what I remember from my only spin of this album, Remember is much better than Highest Bitter so you guys probably should be glad they didn't release that one now. :lol

Just my opinion mate.
-
I had decided not to listen to any more but you guys made me :lol I agree with wolfking - Remember is pretty awful as a Circus Maximus song. If I heard it on commercial radio then yeah........I wouldn't be surprised but to me it almost sounds like they're trying to be Coldplay or something.
I don't think I am even going to bother sampling this album - I have heard enough.
-
it almost sounds like they're trying to be Coldplay or something.
and Nine didn't?
-
Well I'm a casual fan of Circus Maximus at best. I've heard each of their albums and like select songs but overall I don't love them. I suppose I probably shouldn't even bother with this one?
-
it almost sounds like they're trying to be Coldplay or something.
and Nine didn't?
Nothing to the same extent I didn't think. That album was softer around the edges but it didn't feel to me like they were trying to make music for the masses like this one does.
To be honest I have always found them a bit disappointing but kept coming back hoping they would "nail it". Aside from a few songs on each album I have never felt that they achieved their potential........and this album may well solidify that thought. They have one of the best singers in the business and some amazing musicians but I have never got a single disc full of great songs (IMO). Great compilation band for me though .
-
it almost sounds like they're trying to be Coldplay or something.
and Nine didn't?
I liked Nine and this new stuff sounds like it took the few moments I didn't like on Nine and maximized them and then added more stuff I don't like. Sounds nothing like Isolate which is the album that got me into CM.
-

Agree.
-
The Astonishing is great. You guys suck.
I don't mind Circus Maximus going contemporrary. When they pull it off, they really nail it. Some of the songs on Havoc are really good. A lot of them have drums beats like in Remember though. Snare kick kick snare kick kick snare kick snare kick

Yea seriously

OMG I am a casual fan of this band at best. Loved their debut. Got their second album but never really got into it. Checked out Nine on Spotify and made it a few songs in before giving up.
Out of morbid curiosity I checked out this latest song that was linked (Remember). Totally not what I was expecting. I can't tell if I hate it or if I find it strangely intriguing. Good guitar solo at least. I can appreciate that there's nothing else I listen to that sounds like this (?). I could probably dig it if I was in the right mood. Ok, as I type this the song is reaching its epic sounding ending, that was actually pretty cool.
I'll check out the album on Spotify when it comes out. And not that it matters, but whenever I find something I like on Spotify I end up buying it (digitally on amazon).
-
I wonder what YBS thinks of this.
Ytse? C'mon... chime in. We know you've been around a bit.
-
I'm doing an interview with Mats tomorrow in promotion of the album.
I actually, thoroughly enjoy the album. Then again Nine is my favorite Circus Maximus album because it feels like they really found their original sound. Great moments of heavy and prog and awesome moments of pop and melody.
Havoc is without question, the lightest album to date, but I've been spinning it since I received the promo a few weeks back every single night and I find something more to love about it each time.
-
My fav album is Nine too, but still don't like what I've heard. i'm actually really curious and want to listen when it's available to.
-
Did you like The Astonishing Josh? - could be a pattern here
-
Did you like The Astonishing Josh? - could be a pattern here
Actually...I listened to it 3 times and never thought to went back to it.
I moved the weekend it came out and got very sick the next few days after I moved and it never really crossed my mind to go back to it.
In small doses, it's good, but if you try listening to the whole thing, it's a real challenge. They are doing that whole Astonishing tour and if I get the opportunity to go, I will go see them because I haven't missed a DT show in Minnesota since I went to my first one on the 25th Anniversary tour, but I'm glad that this is a one tour deal.
There's a lot I don't like about it. The bass drum sound is a HUGE one for me, especially on the ballads the triggered sound DOES NOT WORK! But as far as the songwriting. It reminds me of A7X's Nightmare. Every song on there I can enjoy, but when you put that many ballads on an album it makes you wanna find something else to listen to after the 3rd ballad.
The lyrics mean nothing to me as they are the last thing I pay attention to on any album, unless some vocal lines are overbearingly bad.
I haven't read much into reviews for the album other than I've yet to see anyone really go "Meh". It's either a masterpiece or garbage.
-
I go with Meh. There are some really great moments in the album but as you said, it's just too long and at some point I just stop paying attention. But it's definitely not garbage
-
OK, I don't think this album is awful but it's by far their worst effort to date. There are some good moments but overall it's not interesting. It feels like they aimed to play it safe somehow, going for a Nineish kind of style but heavier and they failed spectacularly. I'll give it a few more spins but I don't see it getting any better
-

-
I agree with the sentiment that this is their weakest effort to date. This has been a fairly disappointing year all around for new music.
The first half of the album is pretty boring but I think the second half of the album is much better and on par with anything else they have done, it's just too little, too late. Definitely going to give it a bunch more spins though.
The Live songs are a nice bonus for the deluxe.
-
If I really liked The Weight and Pages, how much will I like the rest of it?
-
If I really liked The Weight and Pages, how much will I like the rest of it?
If you liked those two, you will dig most of, if not the rest of the album.
The song, Loved Ones is my personal favorite song off the album and one of my favorite Circus Maximus songs.
Sadly, my interview with mats got postponed to next week, so I don't have any other cool album tidbits other than I really dig it.
-
Really liked the album. I think it's the weakest of the four, but that may purely be due to the title track (the worst CM song by far).
-
I don't dislike Havoc as much as some of you guys do, but I think it is a big drop off from their first three albums. The live disc is a nice addition, though.
-
The live disc is a nice addition, though.
Indeed it is... though I'd already watched the concert a couple times on YT.
-
hmmm...
a little late to the party it seems I am.
-
Came into the thread to see what the reaction to the new album has been since I haven't had the chance to listen yet.
Welp. :-\
So what exactly about the album has everyone terribly disappointed? People are saying they are trying to be more contemporary. What does that mean? Is there any material from their first 3 albums that can be used as a comparison?
-

To me, it seems like they are trying to move more towards the style of Reach Within and Last Goodbye, which I really don't mind. I'd take a whole album of that. With Havoc though, the writing just isn't the greatest. Maybe 5 years between albums isn't such a bad thing after all.
For me the best songs on Havoc are Flames, Loved Ones, Remember, and Chivalry. The rest sounds like boring 90s heavy Queensryche. Even the songs I do like don't sound the most inspired, mainly the drums. I just think they rushed this out too quick because of the backlash of the 5 year wait with Nine.
-
So they took 4 years instead? That's the most laid-back rushing I've ever witnessed. :lol
I thought it was a very strong album apart from the title track. Certainly the lightest album they've done, but IMO they suit the style well.
-
Probably the last album I'll pre-order from this band.
They've changed into something completely different over the last two albums. This new one is especially disappointing. It's almost like they're trying to be the new Matchbox 20 or something.
I guess if you're into a more straight-ahead pop rock style this is OK
I can't recommend it, though :-\
-

Has it been 4 years?! Well fuck me, they have no excuse then.
-

I don't totally hate this music or anything. For example the Devin Townsend pop rock style is great. The problem for me is, the pop rock style for CM just isn't good to my ears. I loved Nine, but the more pop-rock style tracks were my least favorite. The songs I have heard have been terrible. I thought I would give the album a shot, and maybe I will, but for now I do not have interest.
-
If you have spotify give it a listen, maybe you'll like it. As Kirk said this is not an album I would recommend but people have different tastes so you never know.
-
My initial impression was that I wouldn't like this album. I loved Nine (even more than the albums before) and this obviously follow that style. But after a couple of listen I start to like it quite much actually. Highest Bitter and Havoc does nothing for me and I need to skip those, but otherwise the songs are quite strong imo. Nine is still a stronger overall album but there are many highlights here as well.
I think CM is a quite unique band in the sense that they have found their sound / niche that very few others have. Many progressive metal bands follow the same sound and production, but CM is very much their own right now (progressive AOR metal?!), for better or worse.
-
I quite like this album. The instrumental section in Highest Bitter (before the solo) is very tasty, for instance. Many catchy choruses. I haven't heard Nine so I can't compare them though.
-
The title track grew on me. It's actually quite a fun little song.
It really annoys me that there are no lyrics for the album available online. I don't want to have to look at the poorly formatted lyrics in the booklet.
-
Ok.
My thoughts.
This album is mostly a hit for me. I don't want to give it a number out of ten but if I had to
it would be higher than 7 - after one spin. The thing that annoyed me most about this band was how
talented they were and how long we had to wait for new material. Like Dream Theater in between WDADU-I&W
You knew that anything that came from DT was going to be worth the wait, no matter how long. Nine was not
so much a miss for me as I just didn't get what they were up to. My musical ignorance, not a crappy album.
This one works for me. Some funny phrasing and lyrics then all of a sudden a great musical passages.
It's also interesting to me that the vocals used to be huge for me with this band, but now it's the long
musical non-vocal parts that I love so much. He never really goes very high with the vocals which made him
sound so good on the first couple albums. Anyhow, those are my first few thoughts.

After giving the album several more listens, this is pretty much how I feel. The album has grown a lot on me and I enjoy it alot. The only problem with it is that it doesn't really explore anything that Nine hasn't already explored, and much better. In a way, it is like Nine-lite. There aren't any songs on Havoc in the same league as some monster tracks like Architect of Fortune and Last Goodbye.
-
I came back to post that after about 4 or 5 more listens it moved the needle a little bit from "meh" to 3 stars.
Expectations are the problem for me. When I first heard this band back when they released "The First Chapter" I was so excited to hear a band that sounded so much like Dream Theater but also seemed to have their own identity. Especially vocally.
"Isolate" was great too. Was kind of "meh" on "Nine" I'd put this album about on par with "Nine" - if you liked "Nine" you'll probably like this, but if you were hoping for a return to the style of the first two albums you'll be disappointed.
-
I'd imagine that if they released albums a bit more quickly, there would be less disappointment. 2 years is a good amount of time to wait. 4-5 years isn't.
-
I had completely forgotten that CM was putting a new album out this year. I've listened to a few times so far, and I enjoy it. It is quite similar to Nine, but I don't mind that all too much. This is one of those albums I think I'll find myself listening to more often when I want something that doesn't require as much thought while listening, if that makes sense. That's not a bad thing by any stretch, either.
-
So anyone think the songs using that same DUN DUN DUN, DUN DUN DUN, DUN DUN DUN riff are related?
-
So anyone think the songs using that same DUN DUN DUN, DUN DUN DUN, DUN DUN DUN riff are related?
hmm...now that you mention it....I haven't looked at the lyrics yet.
I have a question: WTF is "Highest Bitter"?
-
if you liked "Nine" you'll probably like this, but if you were hoping for a return to the style of the first two albums you'll be disappointed.
I put it behind Nine....as their least interesting to me. Honestly, I haven't looked or checked but this album sounds almost like they've lost or replaced someone....maybe the drummer because the drum parts in these songs are incredibly "simple" when compared to their past output. Don't know if that's the case but thats the only way I can explain how it sounds to me.
That being said though...I gave this release about four or five listens when it first came out and wasn't grabbed by it at all. Not until a two days ago did I listen again and it appealed to me a bit more....it's not bad per say but I think I fall into the category of 'expecting' more from them musically. This seemed 'lazy' to me.
-
Finally got around to getting the album and listening, figured I needed some new music for my vacation and this album is definitely better than expected after the singles were released.
Loved Ones is a really really awesome song, definitely one of my favorites from the band. Other than that, the album is alright. Nothing else blows me away, but it's also not bad. Just very nineish but not as good.
-
So just to update from my first review. I've listened to the album a bunch and it's grown on me even more. I actually really like it.
I was pretty harsh on Remember when they released the music video. I think this song is fantastic. Very emotional and well done. I've come to accept that Nine/Havoc is more of what CM probably want so sound like vs. Isolate. That's fine. I really enjoy both albums.
I also am really liking the song Havoc. It still has that Marilyn Manson feel, but I think it would make for an awesome live song. It's just fun.
-
I can also say that my opinion has grown really much! I disliked the whole album at first (except Loved Ones and Flames) but now I enjoy most of the tracks. It's still not even near from Nine but decent album.

-
I've actually been listening to the new one a little bit lately, it's not that bad.
-
None of the songs are bad in that setlist, but there can be some way better ones.
-
Yeah, seems pretty safe and straightforward.
-
Too safe if you ask me, but I wouldn't expect much else since it's not like they are a band that tours a whole lot.
Also, this would be sick if they actually toured the US:
for 225 euro, you get back stage after show passes to Circus Maximus headline shows for life. That's insane. Definitely will be getting the blu-ray when released.
-
So I saw them on Thursday night and they were very good. Honestly wasn't crazy about the set, some songs were cut for the shortened set time at Progpower, but wish they did some more of the longer songs. Although Architect was amazing. Really wanted Loved Ones from the new album. Oh well. Great performance too. I got a nice video of Game of Life which I found to be an odd decision for the final song.

Just bought The Havoc a few days ago. Did not bother to look at the package very much to realize that there are 2cds, the additional one is a live concert in Japan. Both are very good. A great bargain at $10.00 cdn (7$ us). They were in Montreal a couple of months ago but were playing a very small and uncomfortable venue. Maybe next time I'll go.

Good price. Havoc is okay. IMO it's easier to listen to now than when it came out.
-
Just skip the three shit tracks, and it's an absolutely stellar EP.
-
I really like Havoc!
-
I really like Havoc!
After 20 or so listens, it's a very good album. Tracks 3 and 5 are my least favorites. The rest of it is beautiful riffs and harmonies. The singer's voice is great.
-
Suprised Glory of The Empire isn't played. That should be a fan favorite? At least I assumed so. The setlist for the dvd is too safe. Architect is there but songs like Mouth of Madness, Burn after Reading, Last Goodbye and ofc Glory of The Empire would be cool. More of their best stuff is basically what I am saying ;)
-
So do people on this board still think Remember sucks? I listened to it for the first time in months today and I think it's really great. Very catchy and the la la la la la la la part (with the child's vocals) is beautiful. It's not very heavy, but music doesn't have to be heavy to be good.
Listened to the rest of Havoc too. I like it a lot more than I did months ago. Still don't really care for tracks 2-4, but I love the rest.

I think Remember is great, still think the music video is cheesy and weird though. And yea, once you get past the first few tracks, the album is really solid.
-
Remember is a beautiful song. It's the first song I listen in my car. And I find it heavier than most of TA songs ;)
-
I listened to CM for the first time maybe a year or so ago. I remember thinking it was cool, but maybe I wasn't totally ready for it. I LOVE this band! They are fucking fantastic! And for me, it's MAGICAL. The emotions that the band ellicits feels incredible, and I'm just so appreciative to have found this magic. Unlike most of you guys that have been around for awhile, I'm more interested the later stuff. I honestly haven't spent much time with The 1st Chapter, but Isolate is badass. In my opinion, Nine is a nearly flawless album. I can't get enough of it. The three song run and evolution from Reach Within, into I Am, and finishing with Used is spectacular. And while Havoc has grown on my like it has with a lot of you guys, I really dig the album now, and Loved Ones is one of the most amazingly beautiful rock songs I've ever heard. That song is a must listen to anyone that claims to like music.

Yea, one of CM's best songs IMO.

BREAKING NEWS: Frontiers Music Srl is excited to announce the release of CIRCUS MAXIMUS' hotly anticipated live album “Havoc In Oslo”, which will be released on August 4, 2017. It will be available on 2CD/DVD and 2CD/BluRay.
On February 6th, 2016, Norwegian prog metallers, Circus Maximus celebrated the release of their fourth studio album, 'Havoc' with a sold out show at the Rockefeller / John DEE / Sentrum Scene in Oslo, with a stunning live production that involved pyro, sparks (literally), and a massive light rig.
The band wanted to make this show one of the most memorable performances in Circus Maximus history and then to share this night with the world. So, it was decided to capture the entire night with multiple high definition cameras for a release on both Blu-Ray and DVD as well as an audio component.
Ever since the band released "Live In Japan" via YouTube, they have been eager to make a proper live release in a physical format. “Havoc Live in Oslo” is a powerful statement from a band at the top of their game!

I don't think I even checked out the studio album in the end - too many people whose opinions I respect said it was a steaming pile .
I should really check it out.
-
That is a definite buy for me. Loved ones! So mad they didn't perform that at ProgPower.
I say check it out, it was a grower for sure. Still ranks lowly compared to the rest, but it's really not a bad album. And as I mentioned, Loved Ones. Great song, maybe my favorite of theirs.

It took me a few weeks to finally get at Havoc, especially after reading that it wasn't stellar from start to finish, which I believe Nine is exactly that. Oops, my bad :mehlin. Great album, even if it's not as good as the rest, whatever your fave material of theirs is. And OMG is Loved Ones an absolutely terrific song. Just fantastic in every way. First thing I did was look at this setlist to see if it was there, and it is, so I MUST see!!!
Circus Maximus AND Alter Bridge announce live releases on the same day :metal :metal :metal

I deleted tracks 2-4 from my library. Treat it like a 6-song EP, and it's absolutely stellar. Loved Ones and Chivalry are 5* songs.

Wow, our tastes regarding CM align 100%.
The album is overall closer to Rock than Metal, which my turn off some fans on principle. If you don't mid that , you'll find that tracks 5 through 9 (which are two thirds of the album, BTW) are damn good Prog Rock songs. After a good opener, we are presented with three misfires in a row before the main course kicks in. Luckily, these three songs are also among the shortest on the album, which is why I don't skip them.
-
I think the first song is my least favorite, tracks 2-4 are weak as well, but I kind of enjoy Havoc for what it is, a rock athem type of song. Fun live, but not really much depth or anything really interesting. But yea, the back end of the album really is where the good stuff is.
-
Havoc was a grower and turned out alright, but nothing compared to Nine. I doubt I'll fork out money on this though. The DVD would be cool but the live cd you get with Havoc is enough for me.
-
This band, along with a few others, I always enjoy when I listen to, but for whatever reason, never make a point of listening to. I played the shit out of the first two when they came out. Bought Nine and liked it too, though to a lesser degree. It's like I forget they exist until I see this thread updated.
Listening to Havoc on Spotify now while working. First two songs are good. Third is blah. So is fourth. The rest are good to great, but not anything that will stick with me long, like how I assess much of Nine.

Architect of Fortune from their new live album/dvd :metal
The lighting kind of sucks, feels like Epica's Retrospect where the lighting made capturing it on video difficult. I'll still be getting this.
-

Yeah, this. I really dug their first three albums and probably listened to them all equally. But it took multiple spins of HAVOC for it to become tolerable....and now I like it just fine but think it's their "weakest" album to date. I'm still contemplating buying the DVD...
-
Wow I almost forgot about Circus Maximus. I remeber that when I heard 1sr chapter somewhere in 2008 I was stunned. Great album. It's the only album that I know well. Didn't knew that Nine even exists to be honest, heard about Havoc but I read some reviews that wasn't positive... what is Nine in compare to 1st Chapter?

You know the song Arrival of Love from Isolate? They decided to go in that direction, but with excellent results. Nine is an outstanding album and Havoc continued that AOR style, but some songs aren't that great this time around. Also, you might hate the title track. Definitely check out Nine first, and Isolate as well. That's still my favorite. There are still some great songs on Havoc, so don't let all the negative reviews turn you off. Just keep in mind that if you're going into Nine and Havoc expecting something similar to The 1st Chapter or Isolate, you'll be disappointed. That said, they do AOR better than most AOR bands.

The debut has not aged well for me. Isolate and Nine are my favourites as well.

Thank You Zook, I will dig into it this weekend for sure. I have so many albums on my list "to listen to" that if I would want to listen them straight, I would have no time for anything else for a whole week :P

I'm not sure how someone like him ends up on that show, but that performance was amazing! I love this guy! A lot of the prog rock bands are on the same level musically and skillwise. It's Michael's voice that really takes CM to the next level. That being said, what these guys create as a whole is fucking MAGICAL! I LOVE this band so much!

:metal :metal that's awesome.
Also, I got the blu-ray last weekend. I only got to catch a couple songs, but it's pretty solid overall except for one problem. It kind of suffers the same issues as Epica's Retrospect blu-ray. Essentially they have some stage lights that shine direct towards the camera's creating some issues with being able to see clearly and overwhelming the visuals with whatever color is shining through those lights. I think they kind of fucked this up but kind of just made best with what they could with it. It doesn't ruin the concert for me, but some people might find it more annoying. I'd just say it prevents it from being as good as it could have been. I watched Loved Ones which was just amazing and a few of the opening tracks. I have a lot more to watch.

I think the simple answer is public exposure, if he does well in the competition he gets a whole new audience that's much broader than what he gets in CM which can also benefit the band in some ways even though their music is a bit niche. It really was a solid performance other than the long note at 1:56, i'm not sure what happend, it's like he gives up because he can't hold it or something.
-
I get why HE would take advantage of the opportunity. I don't understand why a singing competition show would invite professional singers of this caliber (I know CM isn't HUGE, but I'm sure they listened to at least some of the music before inviting him, which is FAR AND AWAY enough evidence of his talent, not just to sing, but to create music). I've often wondered what would happen if Myles Kennedy stood in line to audition for American Idol. But I also think they wouldn't have him in the competition.
-
True, you'd think someone who tours singing would be ineligible because clearly they already are a singer in some professional way. Still cool to see him perform and it looked like he did well, I don't know what they are saying, but I guess he moves on or something?
-
Is this band worth getting into? Where should I start?

Definitely. I'd start with Isolate.

I really like that it's so melodic. A good balance of catchy melodies & wankery. The vocals are pleasant, too, as well as the keyboard sounds.

The first ideas for ‘Phasing Mirrors’ was written after the release of ‘Isolate’ in 2007.
The sound and some of the parts are based on the song ’Mouth of Madness’.
It is not a direct follow up, but it could fit the darkness that is the ‘Isolate’ album.
It was later suppose to the be a bonus track on the ‘Nine’ album, but the sound and style did not fit and the song was put on hold. Then after many years we listened to the pre-production and decided that we had to finish it.
Recorded at Lionheart Studios and Remember Studios
Mixed & Mastered by Jens Bogren at Fascination Street Studios
Artwork by Mattias Noren
Produced by Mats Haugen
‘Endgame’ started with the idea of doing a follow up to one of our most beloved songs from ‘The 1st Chapter’
The one and only ‘Glory of the Empire’
Several parts are re-used in a somewhat different approach. The lyrics are again based on a specific movie/television series.
The drums were recorded during the ‘Nine’ sessions but the rest of the band was recorded many years later.
Recorded at Ocean sound Recordings and Remember Studios
Mixed by Øyvind Larsen at Lionheart Studios
Mastered by Jens Bogren at Fascination Street Studios
Artwork by Mattias Noren
Produced by Mats Haugen
‘Isolated Chapters’ is a direct homage to the fans of ’The 1st Chapter & ‘Isolate’

Both iTunes and Amazon are selling this 2-SONG EP for full price ... and because one track is over 10 mins, it's "Album only". Fuckin shit man. I hope that's an oversight on the label's part, and it gets put up for $2.
