Correct.
-
Yay, a Godspeed thread :millahhhh
-
Damnit Zack, I was going to make a thread for them. I've been obsessed lately. Anyway, I have 3 of their albums on vinyl: F# A# Infinity, Slow Riot, and Skinny Fists. All of them are incredible. Favorite songs: The Dead Flag Blues, East Hastings, BBF3, Sleep
-
Yep, they're awesome.
-
I only have Lift Your Skinny Fists... , so i need the other ones. Unfortunaley it will have to wait, since i just bought a lot of other albums :(
-
Fantastic band.
Very unique post-rock band seeing as they use strings, and their whole sound is very different from the more modern post-rock scene we have today.
:tup
-
Pretty cool band.
-
f#a#infinity is one of the best masterpieces I've ever heard
-
Slow Riot is really pretty fucking incredible. Listened to it twice today, and it's already become a fast favorite from the band!
-
Great band, for sure.
Storm is simply too awesome for words. :hefdaddy :hefdaddy
-
Agreed. Everyone goes nuts over "Sleep" but "Storm" is so much better. Nothing tops "Dead Flag Blues", though.
-
Well, pretty much all four songs on Lift Your Skinny Fists... are incredible, so I can't argue with anyone listing them in an order of preference. I just think Storm is the bee's knees. :coolio
I have to admit, though, that F# A# (Infinity) is probably the GY!BE album I listen to the least, so I'll have to give it a whirl to reacquaint myself with it.
-
Their best songs: "Rockets Fall on Rocket Falls", "Storm", and "East Hastings".
-
Great band, for sure.
Storm is simply too awesome for words. :hefdaddy :hefdaddy
Agreed.
I only have LYSFLATH, but man, "Storm" is an incredible song and a great way to open the album.
-
Rockets Fall... and Motherfucker=Redeemer (Part One) are definitely my favorites from Yanqui U.X.O.
-
it's all about "The Dead Flag Blues" (the first section), "The Sad Mafioso" (from "East Hastings"), "Dead Metheny" (from "Providence"), "World Police and Friendly Fire" (from "Static"), all of "Storm," and "motherfucker=redeemer" pt. 2, though i'd never turn down any Godspeed if it's on.
they did some tour dates this year after one long-ass hiatus... would be nice if we got a new album out of it, but that doesn't seem to be on the cards.

God bless them. They had a show here Jan. 21st I believe but I HAD A FUCKING EXAM THE NEXT DAY OR SO SO I COULDN'T FUCKING GO ARGH.

errr, exactly. there's no new record. that "press release" just confirms this! :rollin

Sorry, wrong article :lol This is the one i thought of: https://musicfeeds.com.au/news/godspeed-you-black-emperor-to-record-new-album/
-
it's all about "The Dead Flag Blues" (the first section)
Nah son, "The Cowboy" is the best part of the song.
-
Anyone heard their little side project Esmerine? Its absolutely brilliant
-
Also check out A Silver Mt. Zion if you haven't yet. This album is fantastic:

It sure is :hat
-
Movie Never Made is... one of the greatest songs ever.
-
God bless them. They had a show here Jan. 21st I believe but I HAD A FUCKING EXAM THE NEXT DAY OR SO SO I COULDN'T FUCKING GO ARGH.
If it was me I'd probably have gone anyways. A test wouldn't stop me from seeing a band this good knowing they've been on hiatus for that long. Especially if we didn't know if that could have been the last one.
-
I saw them back in December, it was really good. Though to be honest my interest in them has been waning in the last year or two.

I don't know... It was "Mechanics & waves" which was our hardest class of the first semester.

How come?
-
what should I listen to?
-
F#A# Infinity
-
Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven
When I started with F#A# Infinity my initial reaction was to stay as far away from the band as possible. :lol Of course, it eventually grew on me to an extent.
-
Actually I think Slow Riot For New Zero Kanada is the most accessible release from the band.
-
Every once in a while, I'll put on LYSFLATH. Works best when it is rainy out and I've been sorta productive on a lazy day.
-
I'd actually say their most accessible song is Rockets Fall on Rocket Falls. The first 5 or so minutes should get anyone into this band :millahhhh

this guy :lol
You don't need to post in every thread you know. If you don't like a band, it's best just stay away from that thread. ;)
-
no Im sorry it had good parts :) I just dont think this genre is for me. Thank you anyways carry on
-
I'm glad we have your permission to carry on.
-
They're not quite up to the unbelievably original and awe-inspiring quality of Shadow Gallery and Vanden Plas.
-
-sigh- i politely said it wasnt for me and backed out why cant we let it go?
-
Yet you're still here.
-
Guys, he asked for a rec, and said he didn't like in a way that was far more polite than I usually post when talking about things I dislike. He's really not being out of line here.

thank you. Its alright, Im done. Sorry guys.

I'm just playing with you, Angel. It's all good in the hood.
-
yo man it's all good in the hood yo

I guess I would have expected something more like "Ah it's not really for me, thanks for the link though"
I'm sure you get away with it SigZ because people already know your sense of humor, so when someone else does it, it looks a bit rude. I think it's quite useful for people to know how to voice their negative opinions in a polite way on the discussion forum. It will save a lot of arguing in the future :)

Well, maybe after 15,000 posts we will have a much better idea of your character and be able to discern when you're being serious or not. But as a new member, often things meant in a playful tone can seem quite mocking to others.

Fuck all of you.

Hey ClairvoyantDouche. No one likes you.

Actually I think Slow Riot For New Zero Kanada is the most accessible release from the band.
It also has one of the best songs ever on it
-
which
-
take a guess. there's only two
-
I hope it's BB3, because I freaking love the sample/monologue that they use in that song. I think I know it off by heart :lol Not that that will ever be of any use.
-
You guys are so mean.
-

It was actually a trick question because both are unfathomably godly.
-
bump. I got super blazed and listened to Skinny Fists for the first time ever last night. Words can't even describe how fucking unrealistically amazing it was.
-
Alright, I'll say it: Skinny Fists is their worst album (though that's not to say it's bad).
-
This thread has suprisingly little praise of Yanqui U.X.O, fantastic album.
-
Yanqui UXO is the best them, besides maybe Slow Riot.
-
I need to get into this band... album?
-
I'd say Slow Riot for New Zero Kanada, although it's only an EP. Probably F#A#(Infinity) for an album.
-
c'mon now, the album that sells everybody is Lift Your Skinny Fists. it gets more accolades than f#a#∞, Slow Riot and Yanqui get combined!
also, my vote for sleeper hit by GY!BE: "Steve Reich," from the BBC performance of "Hung Over as the Queen in Maida Vale." it's absolutely cruel that they didn't release it on LYSFLATH.
-
c'mon now, the album that sells everybody is Lift Your Skinny Fists
Really? It certainly seems to be the fan favorite, but it seems to me to be the worst place to start with the band, simply because of how immense it is.
-

Personally I find F#A# Infinity the worst place.
-
F#A# is defnitely not the worst place to start. It was the first thing I heard and I loved it immediately.
-
Ha. It was the first thing I heard and I couldn't make it past Dead Flag Blues.
-
hmm.

That's true in my experience. I think I got into this band through Slow Riot and some F#A#. By the way I'm gonna play those chords on my guitar now.
-

It's only ten minutes longer than F#A#
-
I wasn't just referring to the length.
-
I started with Storm off of LYSF and I was immediately hooked. I think it's still my favourite LP of theirs so that's what I'd recommend.
-
I wasn't just referring to the length.
Width?
-
Yanqui UXO is a great album, although it's pretty hard to get into it (even for GY!BE's standards). Motherfucker=Redeemer is an amazing song. I don't really get the praise for RFORF, though. The first eight or nine minutes are amazing, that's true, but the middle part is pretty boring. The ending, however, is fantastic.
-
The last few minutes of "She Dreamt She Was a Bulldozer, She Dreamt She Was Alone in an Empty Field" are quite possibly my favorite thing in music ever.
-
Now that I've all their albums except the newest one, I shall rank the songs in order from my least favorite to most favorite:
9. Static
8. Providence
7. East Hastings
6. Antennas to Heaven
5. Moya
4. Dead Flag Blues
3. BBF3
2. Sleep
1. Storm
It should be noted that even Static gives me chills, that's how good this band is.
-
1. BBF3

Static
-
Really, Storm that low?
The first time I heard Storm it felt like a triumph king returning from a successful campaign followed by old age, madness and dementia sinking in, only to leave him completely batshit insane.
..Yes, I am losing my mind.
-
The only song of theirs that doesn't blow my mind is none of them.
-
theyre the best beand ever
-
yanquiwe is good
-
If you guys still haven't heard Yanqui UXO, you are in for a treat.
Such a fantastic album. :hat
-
We just listened to it last night lol
-
it was amazing but not their best
-
LYSF is the best them. I came in mah pants when they played Sleep live, one of my all-time favourite songs.

Sleep is my favourite song of theirs - didn't play it live when I saw them :(
Just glad they got back together though so I had a chance to experience them live. I didn't get into them until after they went on hiatus.

I have a really good bootleg of the show I went to by the way, if anyone is interested.

Hope drone is what played between the opener and Godspeed. And it's 20 minutes of drone, so understandable if you want to skip it :p. I didn't record it myself btw.
-
thanks for that. gonna listen to it tonight probably.
-
:tup, enjoy.
-
Sweet. Thanks man.
-
Just ordered F#A# Infinity and Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven on vinyl!
-
Awesome I have LYSF and Slow Riot on vinyl. Really want F#A# as well though.
-
I just wanted to say that I just listened to Slow Riot For New Zerř Kanada for the first time and I'm absolutely floored. Such a great EP.
-
Awesome I have LYSF and Slow Riot on vinyl. Really want F#A# as well though.
I have all 3
-
I was gonna get LYSF on vinyl when I was in America, but I went for Joanna Newsom's Ys instead. Among many other choices. I now own 9/10 of my top albums ever on vinyl, but the last one goes for $900 on eBay. >:(
-

out of them all, Yanqui U.X.O. is the tits on vinyl, though. the extended "motherfucker=redeemer" pt. 2 is so, so, so good!
-
I'm really not as big on that album as the other. Rocket Fall on Rocket Falls is a fantastic song though.
-
(https://img709.imageshack.us/img709/3717/gybemj.jpg)

Whoa. What is that from?
-
What the hell? :lol
-
Been listening to LYSF a lot lately, fantastic album.

A Dave Matthews Band one that for some reason had an incredibly, incredibly limited pressing. One day...
-
i have yanqui u.x.o. on lp and my friend has lysf and slow riot on lp too.
-
I've been playing these guys all evening. Definitely one of my favorite bands. :heart
Antennas to Heaven really clicked with me even more tonight. Such a brilliant song.
-
Well, GY!BE are fantastic really. :heart
-
I seriously cannot stop listening to these guys. I feel like everyone that claims to love music needs to hear them.
-
I saw these guys live a few months back. Loudest fucking concert ever. I'm surprised my head didn't explode. (I forgot my earplugs that night too :( :()
-
Jelly.
-
Finally got my copy of LYSF...
Awesome.
-
The vinyl? I have it too.
-
Nah on CD, I haven't bothered getting a turntable yet, Vinyls (while being more cooler and more of a collector-item) are just pretty clumsy, it's not something I can play in the car, and overall I think CD's are much more 'easy'.
I'll probably get a turntable eventually and start collecting Vinyls, but as of now I'm happy with my CD's. :D
-
You just have to be cool enough to get one of these
(https://www.bbc.co.uk/gloucestershire/content/images/2009/04/20/car_2_470_470x313.jpg)
-
That probably.... doesn't work at all. :lol
-
Looks like its probably great for completely destroying your records too :)
-
You guys are just clearly not cool enough
(https://www.techdigest.tv/assets_c/2009/03/scratch-artist-thumb-300x299-82733.jpg)
Anyway to keep this on topic, I wanna get into these guys. Where to start? I've only listened to Sigur Ros when it comes to post-rock so I want to expand my horizons.
-
Lift Your Skinny Fists ... is a perfect start. As is any other album. Keep in mind that Sigur Rós are not typical post rock, you might want to get used to the sound first with "easier" bands like Explosions In The Sky.
-
Slow Riot For New Zero Kanada is their most accessible work for sure (because it's an EP), but I think both F#A# Infinity and Lift Your Skinny Fists... are better. The latter is pretty widely considered their best work. Basically you can't go wrong with this band except Yanqui (I'm not too big on that album).
Prepare for epicness. These guys are incredible.
-
Yanqui is fantastic.
I actually started with that one myself, so have fond memories of it. :heart
-
There's a serious lack in dynamics on that album imo. The dynamics are what made their other material so good.
-
Tell that to Sigz. :lol
-
I prefer a#f#∞ over Lift Your Skinny Fists myself...
-
Tell that to Sigz. :lol
I have. More than once I think.
-
f#a#∞ remains as one of the best albums I've ever heard, I hope my vinyl comes with the flattened penny lol ;D
What would you guys say is their next best thing, or a reasonable step to take after f#a#∞?
-
I'd probably say Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven.
It's my personal favorite, though the rest of GY!BE's material isn't far behind. :P
-
Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven.
Fixed and accurate.
-
I'll check it out. Thank you guise, you never fail to introduce me to good music :tup

God, facepalm @ me.
I must be tired.
-

We are indeed the best them. :tup
-
I think I've gotten about 80% of my favorite music from DTF-recommendations, so yeah.. great place, great people. :hat
-
They don't sleep anymore on the beach...
-
I think I've gotten about 80% of my favorite music from DTF-recommendations, so yeah.. great place, great people. :hat
This thread caused me to check out GY! BE. F#A# Infinity and Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven are bloody masterpieces. F#A# Infinity sounds like, hell, I don't know, someone recorded the music made by the ghost of a city. And LYSFLATH is just so HUGE sounding and epic. Never really got much into post-rock but I love those two albums.
-
Get the Slow Riot for New Zero Kanada EP next. It's just as good.
-
Get the Slow Riot for New Zero Kanada EP next. It's just as good.
That'll be next then. Btw, I've never heard ANYTHING like "The Dead Flag Blues." Such a haunting song.
-
Dude, you should listen to Skinny Fists more. When I first heard this band I thought F#A# was their best, but Skinny Fists grew on my after like 10 listens and it's probably a top 5 album ever for me now.
-
I haven't gotten to the point where I can determine favorites yet-I'm still at the point of where I'm going "holy shit this band is awesome where have I been all this time"-but Skinny Fists is really good. It's just that Dead Flag Blues sounded so otherworldly, it just grabbed my attention so.
Really, really good band though. I probably should start working through all their various projects too, they sound interesting to say the least.
-
I just checked out A Silver Mt. Zion the other day and they're pretty good.
-
That's where I was heading next.
Listening to Slow Riot now-HOLY SHIT THIS IS GOOD. :)
-
:tup
-
So, I've been listening to Yanqui a bit lately and I think I've come to the conclusion that:
Yanqui U.X.O. >> Lift Yer Skinny Fists...
Every song is pretty much consistently interesting, which is something I can't say about LYSF. My mind tends to wander a bit during that, but still, both really, really great albums
-
I find it the exact opposite tbh. What makes Skinny Fists so interesting to me is the change in dynamics throughout the songs. It's even interesting in the quiet parts and vocal samples. Yanqui on the other hand doesn't have that dynamic range...
-
All three of their albums are on par on the amazingness scale for me. Yanqui is dragged up greatly by having Rockets Fall on Rocket Falls though, by far my favourite GY!BE song.
-
Yeah that's definitely the best song on that album.
-

Yeah, I can see that, but I think the dynamic changes in LYSF results in more 'patchwork' songs.
Maybe I just need to listen to it more. Still, great album.
-
Yeah it took me like 10 listens to really get it...
-
I just checked out A Silver Mt. Zion the other day and they're pretty good.
Movie (Never Made) is such an amazing song.
-
I hope the new CD will come out soon.
-
What's the new album called again? I remember reading it a couple of weeks ago but now I can't find the source :-\
-
I don't think they've announced a title, just that they're working on new material.
-
Moving on to Yanqui U.X.O.-god I love this band. :hefdaddy
-
I just checked out A Silver Mt. Zion the other day and they're pretty good.

YESYESYES
-
bump
Anyway just picked up F#A# infinity
i'm honestly having a really hard time trying to decide if I like this more than LYSFLATH
Anyway this is all I have from them so far but they're fucking amazing
-
I was definitely a big moment for me when I first listened to GY!BE. I love the dark epic theatrical feel. It's like watching a movie without actually watching a movie.
-
Listening to Skinny Fists on vinyl...wow.
-
Jealous.
-
GUYS
Is it wrong that I want to make sweet, careful love to BFF3 (the song, not the guy)? At first I loved Moya the most and thought I would get tired of the interview in BFF3 but it has grown on me and now it's actually my favorite track along with Sleep (I have to admit I haven't spun Yanqui or F#A# enough to absorb them yet though). I think the samples work beautifully with the music, I love how they grow angrier in tenser moments and then calmer on quieter parts, they really work as an additional instrument in this song.
I'm so glad I bought them all on vinyl, now I just need more alone time at home to be able to give the whole discography a proper vinyl listen.
-
I really need to get them on vinyl. LYSF is first in line.

HOLY FUCKING SHIT.
That made my day...no, my YEAR. Must own this.

:omg:
-
Maybe it's the alcohol talking, but I'm not really all that excited. *shrug*
Will still listen of course.

2. Their Helicopters Sing 6:30
3. We Drift Like Worried Fire 20:07
4. Strung Luke Lights at Thee Printemps Erable 6:31
Doesn't look so doubly, but no matter. :metal :metal :metal

Whaaat.
WHAAAAAAAT.
:heart
-
It's out there.
-
HOLY SHIT!!!!!!!!!!!
-
... sweet jesus that is amazing. everything still creeps or screeches when it's supposed to. welcome back to the masters of post-anything!
-
Fucking hell, no way. I must have this.
-
To be honest, I'm not too impressed. The long songs aren't new (I've heard them before (live)) and the drone isn't too interesting. It's still good, but expected more.
-
its gud man
-
It's gud but not amazing.
-
I've never seen them live, so it's going to be all new for me. And I'm totally going into it with positive feelings, it WILL be awesome. :hat
-
I had a very very good bootleg of the show I went to so I have heard one of these two songs a lot already. Still nice to have it studio quality I guess.
-
album is fantastic
-
So I'm just over 13 minutes into Mladic. Different for them so far, but I like it lots! :tup
-
HOLY SHIT!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Amazing! Probably my most anticipated album ever haha, Godspeed are probably my favourite band atm so I'm so excited to hear it.
-
what you guys think about their new 2012 album? "'Allelujah! Don't Bend! Ascend!" ?
-
I think someone made another thread for it already.
I think it's good. It sounds like another Godspeed album, at least.
-
i missed this thread, and bumped the godspeed topic lol :x
sry about that :p
-
To be honest I think this thread should be merged with the other one, it's easier that way.
-
To be honest I think this thread should be merged with the other one, it's easier that way.
that is a good idea :)
-
Related to the topic, I haven't listened yet. I am really excited, but I'll probably wait until I get my vinyl.
-
I listened to it through youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=08phQuvKadQ&feature=related
havent fully swallowed yet so....... I want to listen few more times before having an opinion
-
Maybe this is because I'm not the hugest Godspeed fan in the world but I just kind of think this sounds like another run of the mill Godspeed album to me. I really like all of their albums but I don't think I like any of them more or less than the others because all the songs on all of their albums sound mostly the same.
-
I searched for the other thread but couldn't find it. My bad!
-
Here's a stream link: https://www.guardian.co.uk/music/musicblog/2012/oct/08/godspeed-you-black-emperor-stream?CMP=twt_gu

New Godspeed, not all that long after I got into them, pleases me. It pleases me greatly. Love both the longer pieces, especially Mladic and the way it just builds and builds and builds until it explodes. I'm not much into drones, though, but 40 minutes of new (for me, I've not had the privilege of seeing them live yet) Godspeed works for me.
-
Yeah I love this album :metal
-
my opinion about their new album:
not as good as Lift your Skinny Fists or F#A# infinity....
but still fricking epic!!!!!!@!#@!#@!#@%$$@#^$%*&^%$@#!$#$%^&*()&^%$#@%^&*()&^%$@#
-
Quick question, how would you guys rank the albums? I found F # A # infinity at my local used records store the other day and got it. I love it, but where do I go next?
-
get Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven
-
^That. Personally it's really hard for me to pick a favorite, but Lift Your Skinny Fists, F#A#Infinity and Slow Riot are all awesome. Yanqui is really great as well.
-
new album is better than Yanqui though, listen to that after LYSF!
-
I think the new album is really good, but it's impossible to say this early if it's better than Yanqui. On one side, an album that has been out for like a week, on the other side an album that has been out for a while, and has been giving time to grow/whatever on you.
-
Well, I never really liked Yanqui a whole lot to begin with, so the return to a more LYSF style was much appreciated.
They also played a 44-minute long song called "Behemoth" the other night.
-
My order goes:
Skinny Fists
Slow Riot
Yanqui
F#A#
All amazing though.
-
I could not possibly rank them definitively, but F#A# is my favourite.
-
Slow Riot
Lift your skinny fists
F#A%
Yanqui
Gotta listen to the new one, hopefully tomorrow I'll have an hour to set aside specifically to listen to it.
-
F#A#infinity
Slow Riot
Skinny Fists
' Allelujah! Don't Bend! Ascend!
Yanqui
-
Yanqui haters can go home, the album is awesome. Fuck the haters.
-
Indeed.
Loves me some Yanqui.
-
Fuck the haters.
Well...if you say so :zydar:
But seriously, I'm not a hater of the album. All Godspeed is awesome, but I actively like everything else they've put out more than it.
-
Does that really say anything about Yanqui though? I mean, F#A#Infinity and Lift Your Skinny Fists have pretty much reached classic/cult-status. Slow Riot is considered to be pretty much the same. No band can put out album after album that will be considered so important for it's musical style, Yanqui may not be one of the best albums of this decade, but it's still a really good album.
-
I think it was a bit of a change for them in sound and style, nothing drastic though. It lacks the feeling that all of their other work gives me though-- that feeling of apocalypse and despair and destruction, yet ultimately hope. It's still really good post-rock though, and I agree that everything they put out after F#A#infinity has to measure up to it (and LYSF, but F#A# was just an out of nowhere masterpiece), so yeah. The fanbase is divided about Yanqui usually; some love it, some hate it, some just think it's a good album. I'm the third option.
-
Yeah, it's easily the album that seems to divide fans the most. I don't know if I would say I love it, but it's certainly a great album. Not quite as good as the previous three releases, but it shouldn't be considered a "flop" or something like that, as a standalone album I think it's fantastic. It's only if you start looking at the whole puzzle and compare it to previous albums that you can find more flaws.
-
Is it just me or...
The 2nd part of We Drift Like Worried Fire is really similar to the 2nd part of Sleep?>?!@#?@!?#!@?#!@?#12
-
Yeah I did get that feel.
-
Back to the earlier talk about Yanqui: I really like it by itself, but when you compare it to the rest of their body of work (especially F#A#, which has worked its way into a very high position on my all time favorite albums list very quickly), that's when it starts lacking. And actually, I like the new one better than Yanqui. Its crime, so to speak, is being merely a good album in a discography of HOLY SHIT worthy moments.
-
I could call the new one better then Yanqui. But... RFORF. Such a hard decision.
-
Godspeed now has 4 albums that are rated 4.5 at sputnikmusic :D
I think they are the only ones to ever achieve this.
https://www.sputnikmusic.com/bands/Godspeed-You%21-Black-Emperor/913/
-
Just got the album (Vinyl and CD) with the mail, together with a little note saying "Thanks Jimmy!", those kind of things always cheers me up. :D
For some reason my first reaction was "I'm getting this already?!" but soon realized that we're much further into October than I first thought, time flies by. :lol
-
Yanqui is amazing, I think its better than F#A# and possibly Slow Riot too.
-
I saw the new album on vinyl in my local record store today, but it was rather pricey (30 euros). Should I get it?
-

I would say check internet prices first
-
Not exactly the answer I was hoping for. I was more or less asking if the album was worth getting :lol
-

I'm sure everyone here will say its worth it, and I suspect you allready knew it :)
-
The album is totally worth getting on vinyl. The artwork is fantastic as always when it comes to GYBE.
Overall I feel like GYBE is a band that does very well on vinyl. They feel like a Vinyl-band IMO, their music is really enhanced in several ways when spinning it on vinyl compared to CD or mp3.

not to mention they usually include bonuses - the final side of Yanqui UXO runs the full length because of an extra few minutes added to "motherfucker=redeemer pt. 2" and the hidden track afterward. not to mention the vinyl version of f♯a♯∞ is completely different in content (be it alternate takes or wholly different music) than the CD!
-
I agree, though I have mixed feelings towards the F#A#Infinity-vinyl. It kinda makes me sad that it isn't the full album (because a lot of good stuff was cut), but packaging-wise it's brilliant, and I love the way it keeps playing endlessly.
-
I also saw vinyl editions of Lift Yr. Skinny Fists... and F#A#Infinity. I'm planning of getting at least one of them soon, so I can make use of my turntable (so far my vinyl collection is a bit lacking). Which one should I get first, since they are different from the CD versions?
-
If I remember correctly, the vinyl version of F#A# infinity was made before the CD version of it, and its also what helped them getting signed on a record company.
The vinyl version of F#A# infinity is really diffrent from the CD version.... its way shorter, diffrent order, and The Sad Mafioso section sounds totally diffrent at the vinyl version
-

F#A#Infinity has, as far as I know, the really cool effect that it never ends, but keeps on repeating the final part of Providence, IIRC. I always thought that was pretty cool.
-
How can it keep repeating a single part?
-
How can it keep repeating a single part?
The groove on the record doesn't spiral inward anymore at a certain point, but forms a circle, thus it plays in an endless loop.
-
But then that single loop will only last a couple of seconds right?
-
Yeah, it's only a few seconds, but I'd wager that it's done in a way that it doesn't sound bad - in fact, the way that I know GY!BE I'm pretty sure that it's pretty awesome.
I've never heard it, only heard about it.
-
Can someone confirm this? :)
I'm leaning towards buying this, since it's my favourite GY!BE album, but I could just as easily go with Skinny Fists if it's radically different from the CD version and just get F# on CD.
-
But then that single loop will only last a couple of seconds right?
No, the groove at the end just stops moving inward. the needle has nowhere to go but keep following that same loop endlessly.
-

Yes, I understand, but the loop itself (that plays continuously) is only a couple of seconds long, right?
That's what I meant :)
-
Yeah the last "tone" or what you want to call it is a few seconds long and keeps playing. The first time I heard the album on vinyl I was like "I've heard this for like 5 minutes" and realized the album was over.
I'd buy LYSF before F#A#Infinity on vinyl though, but both are awesome.
-
Going to see them in a few minutes :)
-
Going to see them in a few minutes :)
Envy, a day late! :lol

The Dead Flag Blues is the best them.

Storm is the best them

It was AMAZING!

Sleep is the best them.

Seeing them on Monday myself. Just curious, how long was the concert and was there an opening act?

agreed
then Dead Flag Blues and BBFIII.
-

There was an opening act (which wasn't very good). GY!BE played for about 2 hours I'd say.
-
I got the 1997 edition of F♯ A♯ ∞ today. I'm going to turn off the lights and immerse myself in the music tonight. :)
-

the vinyl, you mean?
-
Yeah, the vinyl. That loop at the end was amazing.
-
agreed, it is, and the original recordings have their own highlights that are almost as good as the 1998 version (though the "drums + violin" section of "The Sad Mafioso" is ... poor).
they actually have left the 1997 recordings as the only vinyl version and the 1998 recordings as the only CD version. personally, i'd like them to put the 'real' (final, CD) f#a#∞ on vinyl. i'd buy it instantly.
-
Yeah, that's the only negative thing about the vinyl, the fact that it isn't the full album.
-
Would anyone be interested in seeing a Godspeed Survivor?
They have so few songs we could feasibly skip straight to a final of 16, if we don't consider All Lights.
-
A survivor would be cool.
-
spurred on by the "so few songs for the survivor!" comment:
it surprises me people still see GY!BE tracks as gargantuan suites when, in reality, they're simply bits and pieces arranged into listenable constructions – exactly the same as placing album tracks in sequence and making segues between each track, with the only difference being that GY!BE only index the CDs into collections of bits, rather than allowing each bit to have its own track.
in relation to stuff like voting survivors, it's actually a bit... less accurate? to go by the entire suites. my main argument is that a track like "Antennas to Heaven" would get buried despite containing "She Dreamt She Was a Bulldozer, She Dreamt She Was Alone in an Empty Field" (a.k.a. "John Hughes"), one of the many highlights inside the enormous 20-minute suites.
i certainly get why – the band presents them in this configuration, of course. however, i find it has more to do with an attempt to make people listen to the thing in sequence. hell, a bunch of them even have straight silence for several seconds. it's all about album pacing and trying to enforce listening to it that way, rather than actually collecting whole pieces, and that's why each record has a breakdown of the individual parts (though i don't recall if that applies to f#a#∞ or not; Lift Your Skinny Fists certainly has a map).
then there's the other issue: if you're voting out songs in a survivor, do you get the option of voting out the last part of "09-15-00" just because it's a separate track? they went the opposite way on Yanqui UXO and actually did break up some parts despite the fact that they were part of a larger whole.
personally, i've split all the albums into respective individual parts, and prefer to listen to them that way, even if i just put on the whole record anyway. it makes more sense, and it's more in line with how the band plays live too. sometimes i just don't want to sit through "Terrible Canyons of Static" and "Chart #3" to get to "World Police," you know?
-
I've always preferred to consider 'songs' how the artist released them - named tracks on a CD, so I consider BTBAM's Colors to be 7 (Foam Born counts as 1) and SFAM to be 12, while 8VM is one, etc.
Motherfucker=Redeemer and 09-15-00 I'd therefore consider two songs, but I'd certainly be open to change if a great deal of people felt otherwise.
As well as that, I think we ought to consider that we want as many votes as possible, and while every fan'd be able to tell me which they prefer out of Storm and Static, I'm not so certain people are as familiar with the individual parts of the tracks (I know I'm not - I'd have no idea what tracks those parts are from), so I think going by tracks is better as it allows more people to vote/be involved as it's less complex.
-
I agree with MK_Ultra, though I also agree some amazing parts in songs (yes, I'm looking at Antennas to Heaven or Static for example) would get voted out earlier than the others on their respective albums, despite containing amazing sections that I would rank higher than sections on other tracks.
-

fair points for sure, but the comparison between GY!BE suites and the typical (i.e. DT) suite form isn't quite so clear-cut, objectively: while DT writes something like ACOS or "Octavarium" in one go as one huge piece, GY!BE write pieces and then, on LYSFLATH and f#a#∞, combines those with ambient and field recordings to make larger structures.
examples of the band not doing this would be those mentioned from Yanqui or "BBF3;" these are longform pieces, entirely whole, always performed live in full, and therefore exactly like ACOS or "Octavarium."
do you see what i mean? it's nebulous. i like that, but i like it because it inherits a choice on my part to either keep with the long structures or cut them up if i really feel like it (or want to skip the ambience sometimes).
also, artistic intention is just as nebulous for GY!BE — if they wanted the entirety of "Providence" to be considered one piece, they would perform it live that way, would they not? if they wanted "09-15-00" to be considered two separate pieces, they wouldn't play them consecutively live every time, would they? is their artistic intention therefore reliant upon their live show (where they construct the pieces anyway) or upon how they show up on CD? and (finally!), if their artistic will is the CD for whatever reasons, why would they bother including roadmaps showing the smaller pieces inside the whole tracks?

I played in a poker tournament with Sully at Foxwoods in CT back in 2007. I got in his head and ended up with most of his chips. He had a Rush t-shirt on.
-
Sully?
-
Yeah, I thought that as well. Who is Sully?
-
Sully Erna (Godsmack)?
-
Yeah, my bad :\
I was sitting in an airport without my glasses on - misread the title of the thread. Didn't notice until yesterday.

ha, new mashup idea
Godsmack You! Black Emperor
My favorite shall always be Godswan You! Black Kimbra or something like that. I wanted a tshirt but no one made any. :'(
-
I am getting into this band!
OMG..just listen to the song Storm and you will understand what I am talking about.
-
Yeah, their first two albums are epic as fuck.
-
I saw these guys live a few years ago. Possibly the best show I've ever seen. I got two of my four favourite tracks by them (Moya and Sad Mafioso; the other two, in case anyone is curious, are Storm and Rocket Falls), and Behemoth was mindblowing live.
-
If I ever saw them live, I'd die a happy camper. Considering where I live, however, this will probably never happen. :'(
-
bump.
new album "Luciferian Towers" coming on September 22nd.

gave it all a go today save for the last track (had to punch out of work and beat the rush hour traffic).
I honestly was surprised how good it was. Other than "Fam / Famine"..the whole thing worked. Could be a great comeback record after their last one left me pretty bored.
-
Listened to it twice over the weekend, lovely record. Very good stuff.
-
I listened once the other day. Can't really remember very much, except the last track - which was incredible :tup
-
So far this is my album of the year. Just a great piece of work and a very welcome return to their softer style, after the harsh (and pretentious) self-indulgence of their previous album.
-
New album called G_d's Pee AT STATE'S END! out April 2. Can’t wait!
-
Probably my most hyped album of the year. Pre-ordered the vinyl and cd!
-
They sure are taking the piss out of themselves with that album title.

-
Been looking forward to this. The track list follows the same pattern as 'Allelujah! Don't Bend, Ascend', and the 2 big tracks are obviously versions of 'Cliff' and 'Glacier' that they've been playing live for a while, both of which sound great on the bootlegs. Interested to see ('hear' I guess) if the 2 shorter pieces are drones again, as on Don't Bend.
-
Hoping it's good. I love Lift Your Skinny Fists and F# A# infinity has some real highlights too.
I've listened to Don't Bend, Ascend and Luciferian Towers once each, they didn't leave much of an impact on me initially but that was the case for the aforementioned albums as well so I'll probably give them some more spins eventually.
-
Fuck yes, I'm excited! I've heard the live renditions of Glacier & Cliff from 2019 & I thought they were amazing, so I've got high hopes for this one. :metal
-
more crescendos, less drone.
-
more crescendos, less drone.
I agree. I'm going all the way through the discography in anticipation of the new record, and I am realizing that the drone stuff takes away from some of the records. That might say more about my taste, though.
-
New album called G_d's Pee AT STATE'S END! out April 2. Can’t wait!
Oh, nice!
-
I'm ok with drone if it's done to build up to something & isn't too excessive, which I don't think became an issue until the post-reunion material.
-
Case in point, two drone pieces from their 2012 comeback album. The long songs are spectacular, pretty much flawless. And the album could have been flawless had they not added the drone tracks.
-

From the looks of it this new album will be structured exactly the same as that one, so get ready.
-

I actually disagree, I think the drones (on that album in particular) adds a nice breathing room in between the 2 longer segments and it helps the flow of the album.
Overall I'd say it depends on the quality of the tracks and how they make the album flow and not drone = bad, long songs with crescendos = good.
-
That's interesting, I am glad that the drone pieces are working for some of the fans. I would have personally loved it if that album contained only the two long songs. It would have been a 10/10 for me. :lol
-
Just a heads up:
"On March 27th at 6pm ET, GS!YE will present a visual album premiere of G_d’s Pee AT STATE’S END!. Take place at an empty theater in Montreal, the event will feature a full presentation of the album alongside a 16mm film spooling dozens of loops & short reels"

Is this free but only viewable live? That's how it seems from clicking on the link.
I think so. I'm guessing it's a one-off live thing for free.
-
Well that was a profoundly moving experience for me, with the visuals and the empty theatre.
The 2 long tracks are excellent recordings of the Cliff and Glacier pieces they've been playing for a while, but what surprised me is the 2 shorter tracks, which are not cacophonous drones like on 'Alleluiah' but rather 'proper' compositions, the last one in particular sounding like something that could have been on an early Silver Mt Zion album.
Really beautiful experience that.

I'm planning to give this a watch as soon as my little one is in bed. I'm hardly.a huge fan but I know that sometimes a visual experience can enhance the music and give me a greater appreciation.
-
Just finished up and I thought it was great! Definitely going to spinning it again when it's released. I've been listening to loads of MONO recently so this lines up with where my current tastes are kind of heading. Really good stuff!
I know I've sampled a couple of their albums in the past, but I need to do a full run through I think!
-
So I've listened through their whole catalogue in the last 24 hours. I checked my Last.fm and I'd previously only listened to Lift Your Skinny Fists and F♯ A♯ ∞.
So after listening through everything chronologically once (but the above two albums a second listen) here is my early ranking. It goes without saying that there is a lot to digest here so fuck knows where my ranking will go after a few more listens.

Do people count Slow Riot For New Zero Kanada as an official album? I thought it was an EP or something.

It is an EP, but I found it noteworthy enough to include in my ranking.

Pretty much everyone included it. I thought I was out of the loop. ;D

It's an EP but the quality of it makes it noteworthy to include in rankings imo.

So, any comments on the new album?
I thought it was the best one since Allelujah. There are plenty of grand orchestral themes, it gets speedy for their standards in some bits. The closing piece was actually soothing. I only wish they still incorporated creepy samples like they did with the early stuff, but still, it's very enjoyable.

I absolutely loved the album. The songs develop in really interesting yet cathartic ways. The shorter songs do a much better job at building the album's atmosphere than the ones on ADBA. I find it incredibly immersive, which helps the flow a lot. Mostly though, the reason I like it so much is that I find it so much more emotional than any of the other post-hiatus material. Especially in the First Of The Last Glaciers & Ashes To Sea movements, I was on the edge of my seat & feeling every note deep in my soul, struck with awe, despair, longing, & hope - something which I adore from the band's early material. I don't know if the album surpasses LYSF or Yanqui for me, but I'll be damned if it's not in that same tier.
tl;dr: I liked it :lol

I thought a week ago when it dropped that it's the best of their post-hiatus albums, and I still think that. I'm listening to it again now in fact. It has an emotional core that I don't feel the last 2 had, and the 2 shorter pieces elevate it slightly above ADBA (great though that album is).

Still waiting for my CD to arrive even though I pre-ordered it on the day it was announced. :tdwn
Listened to it once and really liked it but I’m waiting to have my CD to listen to it more.

March 18th, First Avenue.
I did get to see them finally in February 2016 also at First Avenue. They played in my hometown again I want to say in 2019, but I skipped it.
And the new album is quite good, despite the stupid title (although hardly odd for them I suppose).
I wish they were playing at a Theater though, but whether I go or not is going depend on how things are next March with low COVID numbers and safety. I would anticipate wearing a mask at least the initially at any indoor event, but by March of next year the spread may be low enough not to worry (plus many of us could be getting a 2nd and/or Annual vaccination by then per I just got my 1st shot last month, my 2nd is coming up next Friday the 16th).

04-19 Boston, MA - Paradise Rock Club
Hmm, I wanna go to this, but I'm wary about buying any more concert tickets until I know they'll actually happen. I have like five for 2020 shows that got cancelled or rescheduled to this year (and who knows if they'll even happen this time). :P
I think the new album's okay, I've only listened to it twice though. I find the sound of it to be a bit ugly... their post-reunion stuff seems to focus more on a big wall of sound with everyone in the band playing at once, which I feel didn't happen much on their first couple albums.
I'm still exploring their discography but I doubt anything will come close to Lift Your Skinny Fists for me at this point.

As an extremely new fan to GY!BE, I am still working my way through multiple listens of their discography. As they have a new album out, it's the album I've listened to most so far.
I've gotta say that the final 4 minutes of Cliffs Gaze / cliffs’ gaze at empty waters’ rise / ASHES TO SEA or NEARER TO THEE is currently my favourite piece of music by the band. It's great, and to finish the album off with OUR SIDE HAS TO WIN (for D.H.) is just beautiful :heart

Really loving the new album now. Definitely better than the previous 2 though I think Asunder is massively underrated.
