Easily one of their best songs imo. And in terms of entirely-heavy songs, I'd say it's their very best. I could honestly write a thesis on why this song just kicks so much ass.
I'd say along with Master of Puppets, Dante's Inferno (Iced Earth), this is the perfect metal song.

Great song! :metal :metal
-
5:52 is the coolest part ever
-
One of my absolute favorites. Balls to the wall from start to finish. Especially love the intro and first verse, and then breaking back into the main riff. :metal
-
5:52 is the coolest part ever
I 100% agree. That's what partially got me into DT in the first place.
ps: RUUUNNN!!!

5:52 is the coolest part ever
Quoted for truth. I always imagine JP assuming a power stance and baring his teeth when he plays that part. :metal

You know he does exactly that during the Gigantour show right?

Power stance + teeth baring = metal

Top 5 DT song

Great band.

I'm going to go ahead and add a couple songs to your list...
Lateralus (Tool)
Aenima (Tool)
Hallowed Be Thy Name (Iron Maiden)
The Number of the Beast (Iron Maiden)

heeeellllll yeah

Great song. I think it suffers from starting off SO strong though; the song drags just a bit later on IMO.

One of their best 7-string songs and openers, it's also my favorite from the 12-step suite! :metal
-
Great band.
rumborak
I see what you did there.
Awesome song, their best really heavy song yet imo.
-
Can we give a little love to the drum fill at 12:46? I've always loved that part, and the drumming during the verse that follows.
-
One of their best songs.
*appreciates*
-
2:11 - 2:52 is emblematic of DT. For me, the song isn't top 10 material, but if I had to give someone a 40 second sample of DT, that would be it. :metal :metal :metal
-
Fantastic song, no doubt, but that is an overwhelming sentiment among the fan base, so I'm not sure that an appreciation thread was needed. But whatever.
-
Half the song is great, half is meh. Pretty inconsistent to me (some vocal melodies are just plain boring to me), and therefore one of my least favorite DT songs yet. It's a grower though. I still like to listen to it, cause it sounds great on my speakers. One of the toughest songs sound-wise, sounds great. Usually metal songs have a bit too much treble for sounding good loud, but this one works.
-
The inspriration came from a pantera show"... That is the guarantee for a kick ass song!!!
The only thing i would have liked is if they would just have played that crushing riff in a normal tempo
But overall one of dts best songs ever
-
5:52 is the coolest part ever
:metal
And that transition before the last verses (''Way off in the distance I saw a door...'') has to be the definition of awesomeness.
-
Arpeggios!!!!!!!!!!!
I think the ending feels slightly rushed though. But other than that, there's not a dull moment!
-
Under A Glass Moon >>> The Glass Prison

Great song, one of my favorites.
I really like Mike's drumming and James' performance. :metal
-
So much fucking metal! :metal
-
Great song, yes.
I am still surprised that it didn't become a live mainstay over the years. This should be one of their most played live songs. Hopefully, that will change now that someone else will be writing the set lists. :tup :tup
-
I can never get enough of this song. Headbanging to the extreme when I listen to it. :metal

Yeah, I was bummed that I didn't get to hear it when I saw DT in 2007 and in 2009.

I always had the feeling MP didn't wanted to play it much until he had the whole AA Saga done. But it should've been a mainstay since it release.

Love this song! :metal It's the song that got me into DT to begin with and easily in my top 3 songs!! :metal
-
Yeah Sam, awesome tune on my favorite DT album. :metal

God I fucking love Tool and Maiden.

In all the times I saw DT, Glass Prison was easily the best opening song for a show, set the tone for a balls to the wall night. :metal
-
I used to love it, now I hardly find myself listening to it for some reason. I love the heavy call and response section in the middle.
-
I already said this in another thread, but probably my favourite moment in this song is Mike's "HA" at 8:50. So awesome. And yeah, I'd say this is a top 10 or 15 song for me.
-
All I have to say is OMG FUCKING SWEEPS (yes, I know he alternate picks them)

If I was forced to summarize the band in one song, it would be The Glass Prison.

The section at the end starting at 11:05 is so fracking cool I can hardly stand it. I wish they would pay it at every show although live it is never quite as good IMO.
-
I love the end
WAY OFF IN THE DISTANCE I SAWL A DOOR I TRIED TO OPEN
Some of MP's best lyrics

Yeah this song, along side "A Change of Seasons" are easily the best lyrics MP has ever penned. He's never really come close in all his other songs.
-
I'll probably get beat up for posting this on the 'appreciation thread', but...
I just don't get the rave about this song. I don't like the effects on the JLB's vocals, and MP's voice kind of ruins the song for me.
Now, don't get me wrong, I love most of the heavier material, but for me this is among the weakest.
Maybe I'm missing something (and hopefully if I am DTF can point me in the right direction), but I don't find this as enjoyable as As I Am, or even most of the other songs in the 12 step suite.
I'd even go as far as to say it's my least favorite song on 6DOIT.
So go on, beat me up...

You must not have heard ACOS, LTL, or Metropolis pt. 1

Top 5 song for me. :metal
-
It took me a LOOOONG time to get into. So did This Dying Soul. Then I fell in love with Root of all Evil almost instantaneously and kinda found a new appreciation for the first two.
Still can't get into Shattered Fortress :-\

Glad I'm not the only one. I think the Glass Prison is VASTLY overrated.

Or maybe he feels that TGP does a better job of summaring the band than some of their earliest songs.

Ohhhh no it's not! TGP is pure brilliance! So much to like in this song :)

The first song I heard from the band and still my #1 favourite.

I respectively disagree. I guess this just isn't the style of DT that attracts me.
-
everything related to (the kings of metal) PanterA is awesome...so TGP is awesome. :metal
-
This song destroyed me the first time I heard it. When the fast riff kicks in after the intro - damn, that shit was heavy. Then, the arpeggios, the introduction of another awesome riff, the totally unexpected but great vocal patterning, the mounting intensity...everything was just mindblowing. The perfect production helps, too.
-
Cunning, Baffling, Powerful.
Those that know, know. Funny thing is, I was drunk when I used to blast this song and annoy my friends.
Side 1 of of 6DOIT is at times my favorite by them.
