Title: ZBomber's //OK its all done// roulette
Post by: ZBomber on June 07, 2011, 07:40:23 PM
Alright, since this fad seems to be dying a slow and agonizing death, and I have quite a few people in my roulette, I will make mine last only 5 rounds (plus maybe a final round between two people... we'll see how things go)

PARTICIPANTS:
AcidRainLTE
kingshmegland
sonatafanica
jsem
antigoon
dethklok09
BrotherH
skydivingninja
Quadrochosis
MasterShakezula

Should be self explanatory by now, but in case there are some that don't know... each round I will select a theme, and you have to send me a song that fits into that theme. I will then award the songs points based on how much I like them. I will figure out the scoring a little bit later, I just wanna start this thread now so people can start submitting.

https://www.last.fm/user/ZBomber
My last.fm is pretty accurate, of course there are some things I have heard that on there, but I would go by whatever it says. If there is an artist that has a couple plays, I will most likely accept a submission from them, as long as I haven't heard the song in question. I will also accept any genre of music. Get creative, take risks, and don't worry about winning. If you think there is even a slight chance that I will enjoy a song you really like and it fits the round, by all means, send it. After all, the point of these is to turn people onto music you really enjoy. ;)

RIGHT. Round one. Send me something that you find depressing, whether it be because of lyrics, music, or whatever. Let the orgy begin.

Alright, these were practically impossible to rank. Also, I apologize for the varying lengths of the write ups... some of the songs were just easier for me to write about, and it didn't really have much to do with how much I liked the song.

Also, this is how I decided to do my rankings
1. 6

4. 4

6 Points:
kingshmegland  - 1. Michael Penn - Whole Truth

I've never heard of Michael Penn before you sent this. The guitar/tone in the chorus blew me away as I was not expecting that at all. I loved his voice as well. And to be perfectly honest, I can't really tell you why I like this song. But I love it. The end in particular, with the harmonies and everything... it's just... perfect. I wish I could say more about this song but... honestly I'm just kinda speechless. This song is DEFINITELY going to be getting a lot of spins from me in the coming days!
----
5 Points:
jsem - 2. Henryk Górecki - Symphony No. 3 Movement II

Wow. Just wow. A beautiful, moving piece. The lyrics are taken from a message written on the wall of a Gestapo jail cell by an eighteen year old girl. The English translation (or one of them, atleast) is "No, Mother, do not weep, Most chaste Queen of Heaven support me always." Those are the only lines, and they are so simple... but they say so much. The performance sent to me took place in Auschwitz, which added such a haunting feeling to the music, and made the meaning behind the music so much stronger. The instrumentation itself was simple, almost droning in a way, and left me feeling very empty. It fit the meaning behind the song perfectly. The soprano also had a beautiful tone, and her voice rang with passion.

sonatafanica - 3. Bright Eyes - A Spindle, a Darkness, a Fever, and a Necklace

Definitely a very sad song. At first, I really wasn't digging the vocals. But by the end of the song, I had chills going up my spine. The ending is very raw, very emotional, and very much a tear jerker. The lyrics are also superb, and while there are bits of vagueness sprinkled throughout, you can get a very good idea of what he is writing about. Lines like "I touch the clasp/of your locket/with its picture held/some secret you wouldn't tell/but let it choke your neck", "near a sea of pianos/there were waves of chords/that crashed against the shore/in one huge and useless roar" are absolutely beautiful.

Also, the song really reminded me of "If" by Pink Floyd... not so much for the sadness or lyrics, but the music itself.
----
4 Points:
Mastershakezula - 4. Kansas - Lamplight Symphony

First impressions of the song: THAT BASS! The basslines throughout the song are great, and the tone is so powerful and fits the song perfectly. I loved the subject matter. I always find songs about the death of someone to be the saddest things imaginable, and for that very reason I find myself attracted to them. Of course, the vocals are stunning. My favorite line from the song was "He lights a lamp and looks at pictures of the past/the faces of their youth still glow with new found love/but the picture's faded and time has stolen youth away". The middle section of the song was sublime. Then around the 5:35 mark the piano with the strings came in and gave me chills, and it gets even better when the bass kicks in.

I think you've successfully made we want to check out more Kansas. I've heard Leftoverture before (and Dust in the Wind obviously), but that is pretty much the extent to which I've listened to them.

AcidRainLTE - 5. Thrice - Digging My Own Grave
I really liked the feel of this song. I have heard a lot about Thrice on this forum, and I wasn't expecting something like this. Not sure if the rest of their discography is anything like this, but I really enjoyed it. Great piano work, and very down tempo which keeps a nice depressing atmosphere throughout the song. The chorus was great. I loved how drained and tired the vocals felt, yet still bursting with passion. I'll definitely be looking into more Thrice sometime soon.

skydivingninja - 6. Marillion - Sugar Mice
Very nice song. I've heard it in the Surrounded jam DT did on the Chaos in Motion tour, but I never heard the full song before. I really like the concept of the album being about different people at a bar telling their stories, which adds quite a bit of character to this song. The song closes on a great lyrics "So if you want my address it's number one at the end of the bar/Where I sit with the broken angels clutching at straws and nursing our scars/Blame it on me, blame it on me/Sugar mice in the rain". However, I'm having a hard time figuring out what the "Daddy took a raincheck" line means. The guitar solo was also great, with a lot of emotion shining through. It was probably the highlight of the song for me. My only complaint is how 80s sounding it is... which... is to be expected I guess, since it came out in the 80s.
----
3 Points:
Quadrochosis - 7. Radiohead - How To Disappear Completely

Very spacey, atmospheric song. The end was purely brilliant. I loved the chorus too, "I'm not here, this isn't happening, I'm not here, I'm not here" is just so sad and brings about the most depressing images in my mind. "Strobe lights and blown speakers, fireworks and hurricanes" is a bit puzzling to me, and I haven't any clue as to what that means within the context of the song. Perhaps it has more to do with the album itself rather than the individual song. Could anyone enlighten me?

progoon - 8. The Weakerthans - Bigfoot!
Short, sweet, and to the point. Never heard of this band before. I don't know if I personally find the song to be that depressing, but it was definitely very pretty. I think the saddest part about the song was the horns at the end, which were a great addition, and I kind of wish they were utilized more in the song. The lyrics were very vague and mysterious, but the line "I'll listen to the south winds sigh with rumors and regrets/And I don't want to talk about it anymore" really stood out to me.The outro was also awesomely creepy!
----
2 Points:
H - 9. Symphony X - Paradise Lost

I should probably start off by mentioning that I am not a big fan of Symphony X. However, I tried to look past that and keep an open mind while listening to this. I thought the song was good and the added strings were quite pretty, but I didn't find it very depressing, to be honest.  The final "So I've cheated" section was very powerful though. The transition to acoustic guitar following that was also a great touch, and was my favorite moment in the song. This song is better than anything else I've heard by Symphony X, but it wasn't enough to really make me give them another shot. Bonus points for being inspired by the poem though!
----
1 Point:
dethklok - 10. Nevermore - Dreaming Neon Black

I liked the acoustic chord progression in the beginning of the song, but vocals were a huge turn off for me. The transition into distortion for the chorus felt a bit forced and didn't really seem to fit in much. It seems to me like they felt they had to just throw in something heavier in there, because the jumps from acoustic to distortion don't seem natural and happen so often that it didn't feel cohesive to me. That said, I thought the line "I never knew what changed you/did they paint your dreams in pale shades?". Also, I thought the outro was really cool sounding. But of all the songs sent this round, this was my least favorite. Sorry.

Alright, thanks to everyone for getting their submissions so fast. Let's keep it up and we can make this THE FASTEST ROULETTE TO EVER HAPPEN IN THE HISTORY OF WHATEVERS.
ROUND2: Send me something with a great guitar solo. Please note, great guitar solo =/= a billion notes per second. It doesn't need to be fast, or technical, or anything. Just something that you feel is a great solo in itself. If you can't think of a good guitar solo, I will also accept any song with a good solo instrument.

Well, I'm very glad to see that you enjoyed the Kansas!   ;D  If you want to know where to go from Leftoverture, well, their first 3 albums are amazing, particularly Song For America.  The 3 after it are pretty good, if not as say, proggy as the first 4.  Though, if you prefer AOR stuff over overtly proggy stuff, then they would be your best bet.  (If you want the album with Dust In The Wind, go for Point of Know Return).  I really haven't checked out anything after the original lineup dissolved, but I've heard great things about the temporary reunion of Somewhere to Elsewhere, so if you find yourself really enjoying Kansas, it would make sense to give it a shot.

Great guitar solos?  Can I just send Sugar Mice again? :neverusethis:

Also, "to take a rain check" means you can't make it to a certain function, get-together, meeting, etc.  I have no idea how that came about and I rarely hear it anymore, but I guess it has something to do with how shameful the narrator is and how he can't face his kids, so he would literally say to his kids "Can't make it, can I take a rain check?" (which I think is the way that saying's used today)

Title: Re: ZBomber's Super Fabulous Gang-Roulette ROUND TREEZ
Post by: ZBomber on June 16, 2011, 10:34:18 PM
Well, good job everyone! I genuinely liked all of the songs sent to me this round. It was really hard to rank them, and I ended up just basing it on what I am the most likely to listen to again.

6 Points:
skydivingninja - My Morning Jacket - Lay Low

Well... I know what band I'm gonna be looking into the next couple of days. One of my friends actually suggested this band to me a couple weeks back but I never got around into checking them out. Looks like I should have listened to him! The solo at the end of the song is brilliant! The solo lasted so long, and I think normally it would start to get repetitive after awhile... but it didn't. It was just that perfect that it could have gone on for another 10 minutes and I would have been just as into it.

5 Points:
H - Alter Bridge - Blackbird

Alter Bridge is another one of the bands I've heard people rave about constantly but never got around to listening to anything they've done. Love the transition into the distortion around the one minute mark. The singer has a lot of power behind his voice. The build up into the solo was orgasmic. The outro really tied things together quite well, and the little guitar fills added a great touch. This wasn't what I was expecting the band to sound like... in fact, it is way better tahn I was expecting. Another band that's going on my list to check out.

sonatafanica - My Morning Jacket - I'm Amazed
Mmmmm. When you mentioned country roots in your PM, I wasn't sure how I was gonna feel about the song. As it turns out, I love it. Since you and Matt both sent me My Morning Jacket, you both lose 10 points. Just kidding. But really, I liked both songs a lot but the other one just grabbed me more. If its any consolation, you get credit for getting me into the band since your submission came in first. And with that credit, you can redeem a firm handshake.

4 Points:
dethklok - Marty Friedman - Valley of Eternity

Really beautiful intro. The solo around the 3:15 mark was excellent. Of all of the songs sent to me, this was probably my favorite guitar wise. I really loved the style. And the harmonizing guitars around 6:50.... YES! The atmospheric spacey outro was great too.

antigoon - Tommy Emmanuel and Frank Vignola - Tenderly
Damn! Great emotional playing. I almost creamed my pants when the harmonics came in. Beautiful playing, beautiful piece. Hadn't heard of the players before, so I'm gonna have to look more into them.

Quadrochosis - The Dear Hunter - 1878
Well, you know I wasn't too huge into this band before. I really like the drums in this song. The vocals in the chorus are really good. The organ solo was unexpected, as I forgot you mentioned it had that. It had a really nice vintage feel to it, and I love when organs are utilized properly! I liked the song, although I still am not completely sold on the band. I'll definitely be checking out more of their material soon though (as you still need to show me the Colors EPs!).

3 Points:
AcidRainLTE - Buckethead - Soothsayer

Honestly, I'm surprised you're the only person who sent me Buckethead. :lol Of course, I'm familiar with some of his material, but he has so much out there and I've never heard more than a couple songs of his (and one project he was in which sucked ass, although that wasn't much his fault). Soothsayer is a song I see get mentioned quite a bit by the fans of Buckethead on the board, so I was glad to see you picked that one to submit. The riff at 2:50 was sick! Even though the solo in the middle was very fast and filled with notes, it doesn't really come off in a negative light to me because of the beautiful build up that preceded it. It felt like the song was actually a progression instead of just a showcase for showing off. Things like that keep instrumental music interesting. And DAMN! The part around 7:50!! Finally, the vibrato was a kick-ass way to finish off the song.

MasterShakezula - Deep Purple - Burn
The instrumentation in this song was top notch. A nice hard rock guitar riff that laid the back bones to the song, with a lot of great soloing all over the place. The guitar tone for the solos was excellent, especially the second guitar solo. At the same time, I kind of have to say it sounds a bit like every other Deep Purple song I've heard. Still liked it, none the less.

2 Points:
jsem - Haken - Eternal Rain

Loved the intro, very spacey. Also love the section from 4:35 to about 5:20. A lot of prog metal bands have become really stale for me, and while this song didn't really do anything revolutionary or new, it made sure it didn't become just another prog metal song. Although I do have to say some sections REALLY reminded me of Dream Theater. Definitely seem like a band to keep your eye on in the coming years, they certainly have what it takes to get big in the genre.

1 Points:
kingshmegland - Toto - The Road Goes On

The chorus in this was really good. I liked the guitar solo too. When I saw you sent Toto, I was expecting a really 80s sounding song, so I was happy that it didn't sound so dated. :lol I did like this song, and the singer had a great voice, but stacked up against the rest it was probably the least memorable for me.

Round 3. Send me something you would describe as "weird". I'd like something really out there, but please send something that you actually find enjoyable... not just a recording of someone taking a shit or something please. :lol

With the Haken, that's a really good song but its definitely the most straightforward and DT-esque on the album!

For what it's worth, I did like it, its just this was a very strong round so even songs I liked got low scores.

You guys are awesome for already getting half of the submissions in.

If I get the rest of them by the end of the weekend, I will have the results up ASAP. However, I'm gonna have a VERY busy week next week, so I probably will need to take a break from this from Monday-Thursday. After that, my work load will be a LOT lighter.

Alright, I'll post up my results before I go to sleep tonight

But, the write ups are gonna be very short this round and I apologize for that. I've been really run down/busy lately, mostly because my summer classes are coming to an end and I have a bunch of tests and projects I need to do due Tuesday. So I haven't been feeling too great lately, and I could push this off until later, but I figured this round took long enough so I might as well just post what I have for now. Again, the write ups are a bit short this round, but I'm hoping to go back to "normal" ones next round. Didn't help that a lot of these songs were so weird that I just didn't really know how to describe them other than "weird"... in a good way of course. :lol Also I'm starting my job this week so that's gonna take away a lot of time as well... hoping to finish this asap so others can get started on their's.

But Didn't help that a lot of these songs were so weird that I just didn't really know how to describe them other than "weird"... in a good way of course. :lol

Title: Re: ZBomber's Super Fabulous Gang-Roulette ROUND MORE!!!
Post by: ZBomber on June 27, 2011, 12:17:25 AM
Well yeah, it's a good thing the songs are weird since that's what I wanted.  My mind is just so blown out that I can't think of many adjectives other than weird right now, so I'm keeping the reviews really short in order to avoid having the same one for each song.  :lol

ROUND 3 RESULTS:
6 Points:
Bersarin Quartett - St. Petersburg (antigoon)

Very beautiful, ambient piece. Um... yeah :hat This is definitely the kind of music I can put to good use. :D Simple and minimalistic, which makes it perfect for just spacing out. I've been looking for music like this so I will definitely be checking out more.

5 Points:
Primus - Tommy the Cat (kings)

Primus is obviously a band I have heard of, but I've really only heard one or two of their songs before. Nonetheless, I still had a great respect for Claypool. This song kicked ass! As a bassist, I absolutely ate up the funky bass all throughout the track. The music was so out there, in a good way!

Bjork - Submarine (sonatafanica)
Well... that was certainly a creepy intro. :lol I never had heard Bjork before, so again this was an artist I was really looking forward to hearing. Really cool song, loved that it was acapella!

4 Points:
Polkadot Cadaver - Bring Me The Head of Andy Warhol (skydivingninja)

When I picked the round theme, this was the band I was really hoping to get. I never listened to them, but I've seen people raving about them on DTF.

Demians - Porcelain (Quad)
Very cool laid back, atmospheric track. Never heard of this band before. The intro sounded great with headphones, as did the whole song really!

Return to Forever - Medieval Overture (MasterShakezula)
My friend showed me a couple of RTF songs before... great band! Chick Corea is awesome. That part around 3:00 is so good! The ending was incredible too

3 Points:
Dog Fashion Disco - Acid Memoirs (acidrainlte)

Well... can relate. :lol Love the change around 1:35. Never knew this band was the predescor to Polkadot Cadaver. I liked it, but not as much as PC.

Diablo Swing Orchestra - A Tap Dancer's Dilemma (jsem)
That bassline is sick! The weirdest thing about the song was probably the vocals, which I wasn't a huge fan of. However, the music undernath it was phenomenal. 4:25 <3

2 Points:
Spock's Beard - The Light (H)

I like Neal Morse, but one thing that bugs me about his music is he often seems to make a song drag on a bit too long. I liked the music but I felt it would have been just as good, if not better, if it was a couple minutes shorter. Also I hope its just the copy you sent me, but there is some SERIOUS distortion in there, it actually hurt my ears it was so bad. :lol

1 Point:
System of a Down - A E I O U (dethklok)

I actually heard this song before, but didn't realize it until I started listening. Anyways, not a huge SOAD fan. :P It certainly was weird, but not a kind of weird that I got enjoyment out of.

ROUND 4: Send me something with great vocals. Also, just a heads up that the next (and final round) after this will be a free submission round.

Current standings:
sonata: 5 5 5 = 15
sdn: 4 6 4 = 14
antigoon: 3 4 6 = 13
kings: 6 1 5 = 12
quad: 3 4 4 = 11
master: 4 3 4 = 11
acidrain: 4 3 3 = 10
jsem: 5 2 3 = 10
h: 2 5 2 = 9
dethklok: 1 4 1 = 6

I hope the bad quality of the link I gave you didn't impede on my score. :(

Gonna have to think hard about a really good vocalist.  Most of the vocalists I know are either annoyingly operatic (James LaBrie, Russell Allen, Geoff Tate...) or artisticly droll (Steven Wilson, Kevin Moore...).

No, it didn't, I just felt the song went on a bit too long. I've kind of felt that way for most of the longer NM songs I've heard, be it Spock's Beard or Transatlantic. His short songs are beautiful though.

Hmm.. if you want to give it up after you're done with this round, you can always hand it over to a great guy I know.  His name's like "RaveHart", or something depressing like that, and his tastes are like really diverse and stuff.  He's a pretty cool guy, listens to lots of gothic stuff, and doesn't afraid of Robert Smith.

I'm guessing whichever record has this song on it would be a good choice! I don't really even know what to say. I didn't closely analyze the music this time, I just laid back and let it sweep over me. Absolutely brilliant!

5 Points:
Florence & The Machine - Cosmic Love
(Quad)
SWEET! Really digging this one. Not only are the vocals superb, the underlying music is also really interesting. The outro is like something straight out of a dream. I heard one of the songs from this band on turntable.fm before, and now I want MORE

Jeff Buckley - Forget Her (H)
Really sad song. At first, the vocals didn't blow me away but he has such a beautiful warm tone to his voice. Great solo in there too. The vocals following that solo were really powerful, and brought the song to a strong climax. Very nice, subtle use of the organ too. All in all, excellent song!

4 Points:
Pomplamoose - If You Think You Need Some Lovin
(sonata)
wtf this isn't depressing. 0/10

But no, that was pretty cool. Love the harmonies in there. Very simple song, but very very catchy. Scatting at the end is pretty gnarly dude. All in all, just a very fun song.

dada - Star You Are (kings)
I am a sucker for vocal harmonies. And this song sure has its abudance of them! Enjoyed this thoroughly!

Chicago - Question 67 and 68 (jsem)
Chiacgo is a band I have wanted to get into for a long time. I only had heard a song or two before. This might be the catalyst I needed to bump me into starting to listen to them! Excellent song, vocals had that great vintage 70s feeling to them.

3 Points:
Brooke Fraser - Flags
(antigoon)
Really pretty song. Very dreamy. Like you said in your message, she doesn't perform a ton of vocal acrobatics, but her voice is so gentle and... well, peaceful. The ending with "I know the last shall be first" gave me goosebumps!

Wishbone Ash - Warrior (shakezula)
The song itself was very cool! Never heard of this band before, but they sound like something I will really enjoy. With that said however, the vocals didn't really do all that much for me. Certainly nothing wrong with them, they were good, but they weren't great. Just not enough to win a vocal round. But the instrumentation itself is so great!

2 Points:
Phutureprimitive - Disappear
(dethklok)
I did really like this song. Very ambient and spacey. However, I don't think it was a good pick for the vocal round. The vocals are so buried beneath all of the effects on them, that its hard to really know how good they are. With that said, however, I really did like the song, and I wish I could give you more points for it. If this was submitted during a different themed round, it would get a lot higher, but because the vocals were autotuned and it was hard to hear what he really sounded like, it was hard for me to judge his vocals accurately. Still, they suited the song very well.

1 Point:
Faith No More - Star A.D.
(parry hears)
Really fucking groovy song. Loved the bass throughout it. Again, unfortunately, I wasn't that impressed by the singing. The ending vocals are pretty cool, but for the most part the vocals were vastly overshadowed by the music beneath them.

So, this ends the normal rounds....

Wow, the Chicago tune was the one I would have sent, if not for my being a total promoter of Wishbone Ash's Argus.   :lol

Already got Up, and it is indeed amazing! They only had his vinyls from the 70s/80s at the store I go to though, and one of them was the one with this song, so I think I will definitely pick it up next time I go there.

Well when you said vocals I thought you meant like with the effects with it. Like if you sorta see what you mean.

Mike, I had a great time.  Glad you liked Dada. They for a 3 piece band have great harmonies and great sonics as well as styles.

Zbomber: Get III, Us, Security, and So.  Those are four of his five best.  The other is Up, which you have now and while it wouldn't be my introductory choice to Peter Gabriel's solo stuff its still fantastic.

Guess what

I don't give a fuck and I'm gonna make my write ups shorter than Ryan's dick
Sigur Ros - Hoppipolla (SDN)
Excellent, really really good. Sigur Ros was one of the bands I've been wanting to check out, and this song had a really summery feel to it.

Sallie Ford & the Sound Outside - Fried Green Tomatoes (sonata)
This one might be too indie for me. Just wasn't able to get into the track at all.

Matt wins. Everyone else sucks. You should all kill yourself, and by extension I should also kill myself. So lets just mass suicide party and stuff because roulettes are lame now anyways

Anyways, thanks to everyone that participated. I've discovered quite a few bands I want to check out further... these artists are on my list.
Sigur Ros
Chicago
Peter Gabriel
Phutureprimitive
Michael Penn
Bersarin Quartett
bjork
Bright Eyes
Florence & The Machine
Jeff Buckley
My Morning Jacket
Alter Bridge

4 Points:
AcidRainLTE - 5. Thrice - Digging My Own Grave
I really liked the feel of this song. I have heard a lot about Thrice on this forum, and I wasn't expecting something like this. Not sure if the rest of their discography is anything like this, but I really enjoyed it. Great piano work, and very down tempo which keeps a nice depressing atmosphere throughout the song. The chorus was great. I loved how drained and tired the vocals felt, yet still bursting with passion. I'll definitely be looking into more Thrice sometime soon.

I apologize to Harry for not giving him the best score for this song, because I've been listening to TAI a ton lately and it is SEX
