Title: Top 50 Albums: The UMH Experience
Post by: Ultimetalhead on June 04, 2011, 07:47:16 PM
Cut to a scene in a cozy living room. UMH is sitting in a red velvet chair smoking a pipe, reflecting on all the wonderful music he's heard in his lifetime. He looks directly into the camera.

"Oh, it's you! Been a while, hasn't it?" The camera moves up and down in a nodding fashion. "No doubt you've come to talk about my top 50 albums!" UMH gets up and disrobes to reveal a Polkadot Cadaver t-shirt and jeans. He is officially tired of trying to make a funny introduction, and just gets on with it.

50. Slipknot - Vol. 3 (The Subliminal Verses)

Well, we're already off an a controversial note. I'll be the first to admit that nu-metal and metalcore are probably my most hated, nay, despised musical genres ever. However, Slipknot is the one and only band responsible for my transition out of mainstream pop and into the wonderful world of heavy music. Believe it or not, before I was Ultimetalhead, I was Ultiboybandhead. This album deserves this spot for getting me out of that crap alone, but this album is truly quite a piece of work. The songs aren't focused exclusively on being heavy, there's very little rap (A defining quality of nu-metal), there's some rather beautiful clean vocals, and there's tons of variety. On one hand, you've got songs like Three Nil which are full-on assaults of metal, and later on a song like Vermilion Pt. 2 soothes you with its acoustic touches. There's even an industrial experiment in The Virus of Life. Overall, even if you think Slipknot are "teh SuckZorZ", you owe it to yourself to give this album a spin.

Recommended tracks: Circle, Vermilion, Vermilion Pt. 2, The Nameless

49. Megadeth - Peace Sells...But Who's Buying?

Less controversial territory with this one, I'd say. Megadeth, much like Slipknot, was responsible for getting me out of a phase, only instead of N*SYNC it was Metallica. While this was one of the last Megadeth records I checked out during my obsession with them, it's obvious that this is one of Dave Mustaine's finest moments. Guitarist Chris Poland and drummer Gar Samuelson give such a unique, almost jazzy flavor to Dave Mustaine's crushing rhythm work. The guitar solos on Good Mourning/Black Friday are undoubtedly some of the best solos in the history of thrash/speed metal. Of course, one could never mention this album without giving some attention to the legendary title track. It was Megadeth's first political song, and it started a long trend of politically charged songs that now litter the Megadeth catalog. If you're a metal fan and you haven't heard this album, then you're seriously missing out.

Recommended tracks: Wake Up Dead, Peace Sells, Good Mourning/Black Friday

48. Polkadot Cadaver - Purgatory Dance Party
(https://shop.moderninvasionmusic.com/repository/product/1196123313_123.jpg)

Harry got me into these guys with the song "Pure Bedlam For Half-Breeds", and I can't thank him enough. This band is absolutely insane. They combine what would otherwise be fairly generic metal with genre switches and some acrobatic vocals. The most impressive song on this album has to be "Bring Me the Head of Andy Warhol", which is what I would imagine what being stuck inside a psychotic, raging lunatic's head would sound like. It's criminal that this band isn't more popular within the avant-garde metal circles. Also, SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN SATAN.

46. Ayreon - 010011001
(https://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/615pHj4C06L._SL500_AA300_.jpg)

This album is...long. Really, really long. You'd have to be absolutely stupid to make a prog-metal album this long and expect it to hold peoples' attention, but Arjen Lucassen did it anyway. Why? Because he damn well felt like it. The craziest part of this story is the album is actually extremely good. There's a monumental cast of singers on this album, including Daniel Gildenlow, Hansi Kursch, Jorn Lande, and Anneke van Giersbergen (aka the best female singer ever). Arjen Lucassen plays most of the guitars, basses, and keyboards on this album, which is an even more impressive thought when actually listening to the album. There's plenty of layers here that merit repeated listens. The story is interesting enough for Ayreon noobs, and a great close to the Ayreon storyline for the faithful ones who've stayed with Arjen throughout this lengthy project. The all-star vocal cast is more than enough to put this album in my top 50, but the album is a great, if not enormous slab of prog metal goodness.

Recommended tracks: Age of Shadows, Ride the Comet, The Sixth Extinction

Awesome.  I will follow, scrutinize, and then criticize like a motherfucker.  But I'll save the snide comments on number 50 because I'm sure there'll be plenty more to cover for me.

Looking forward to reading this through!  TO THE END!  Also fuck yeah Polkadot Cadaver.

And nice writeups and great choices! I'm not a huge fan of Peace Sells, but the other three are excellent albums! :tup

It's interesting to point out that uninformed detractors like to think of Slipknot as metal's answer to ICP. Chew on that. ;)

Vol. 3 is a really excellent album, and by a long long way the best thing Slipknot have done. I pretty much hate their first two albums, but when this came out it was a really pleasant surprise.

With the Ayreon album, it is really good but it's not one of my favourites by Arjen, because although it has such an amazing cast, I think there are a few too many of them, and so they end up not really being fully utilised. Lande really shines, but Gildenlow for example doesn't really get a look in.

I agree with everyone who says they like Vol. 3. The previous albums are crap, so is All Hope is Gone, but Slipknot really nailed it with Vol. 3. Too bad they probably won't ever write another album like that.

All Hope is Gone made me a very sad panda when it came out. Coming off such a strong album, they had potential to make their next one even better, but they completely blew it.

The mods should keep Justin's name as is until the list is finished. Changing his name back could be his reward for finishing. That way, it's like insurance for the rest of us, because we'll have the peace of mind of knowing that he won't get to the Top 2 and never finish. :p

46. Annihilator - Never, Neverland
(https://t1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcT4jNQbqzF4tuKYVtqHEc9yE4ihWYgJoiANO16qrR4DZVbbRf8Z)

If you're talking about thrash metal with anyone, the big 4 will always come up. Depending on how well-versed your friend is, Exodus, Testament, and maybe Overkill will come up. But, very few people have ever heard of Annihilator. This is an absolute atrocity, as Annihilator were releasing amazing albums that kick the shit out of what most of the bands were doing at the time. This album is definitely their high point. The riffs are heavy and speedy, the vocals soar and growl, the drums pound away. This is exactly what you want in a thrash metal band. While it may seem like I haven't listed any truly unique qualities to them, then it's probably because there really aren't any. They put a slightly altered spin on a mostly repetitive formula, and it just sounds fucking killer. There's also a song about macaroni and cheese. Seriously.

Recommended Tracks: The Fun Palace, Road to Ruin, Imperiled Eyes, Phantasmagoria

45. Buckethead - Colma
(https://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51yzhY1XU9L._SL500_AA300_.jpg)

Buckethead is simply a genius. Any guitar virtuoso can shred with the best of them, and while Buckethead definitely excels in that regard, one of the most amazing things about this guy is his sense of melody. In this ambient offering, Buckethead exposes his softer side, and plays some truly beautiful music. The classical guitar feel of Big Sur Moon is often cited as one of Buckethead's greatest achievements, and must be heard to be believed. The rest of the songs all have at least one bone-chillingly soothing moment, and I'd call it one of the most soothing albums I know. Everyone needs to check out this guy's music, and especially this album.

Recommended Tracks: For Mom, Hills of Eternity, Big Sur Moon

44. The Cat Empire - So Many Nights
(https://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51VVKYHn5IL._SL500_AA300_.jpg)

I will forever love Rich for getting me into these guys. For so long I had been waiting for a rock band that features trumpets in a dominant role, and I've finally found one. The trumpet player in this band is an absolute beast, and a pretty damn good singer as well. The lead singer (not the trumpet player) has a very "cool" voice. He just sounds very smooth in his vocal inflections. This is definitely music to dance too, even if you hate dancing. There's not really much else I can say about these guys. Just check them out.

Recommended Tracks: So Many Nights, Fishies, Sunny Moon, Til The Ocean Takes Us All

I never understood the Annihilator hype. They sounded like run-of-the-mill thrash metal to me. I'm surprised to see it ranked above Peace Sells, which is both classic and innovative.

Cat Empire sounds cool, though.

Post by: Ultimetalhead on June 05, 2011, 08:57:52 PM
Out of curiosity, what have you heard from Annihilator? On the whole, they can get rather generic, but Never, Neverland is full of amazing songs that contain some very unique and innovative riffs, and the soloing rivals Chris Poland easily. It's no wonder that Jeff Waters (the guitarist) was in the running to join Megadeth before Rust in Peace.

43. Dream Theater - Images & Words
(https://2.bp.blogspot.com/_jo8hxMxG0tY/SwIbM6gqzwI/AAAAAAAAAB8/s3Yhdj2RPIo/s1600/257089dream_theater_images_and_words_a.jpg)

This album might seem a little low to some of you, but if anything, it's a sign that we're into some pretty legendary territory already. This album is highly respected among all Dream Theater fans (unless your name is Darkes7), and for damn good reason. This album is nothing short of a classic in every manner. It's littered with songs that would place on most DT fans top 10 lists, and it even contained the only mainstream hit. All the while, this album plays out like a crash course on how to make great progressive metal. The ambient textures are there, the riffs are there, the intricate melodies and first-rate musicianship are definitely there, and the vocals are some of the best in the genre. Prog fans, metal fans, and even regular music fans can find at least one song to enjoy on this masterwork.

Recommended tracks: Take the Time, Metropolis Pt. 1, Learning to Live

42. Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath
(https://quasherthoughts.files.wordpress.com/2011/05/black_sabbath_debut_album.jpg)

Most people have differing opinions for where metal truly started, but I've always considered this album to be the one that really nailed it. The opening track is built around the tritone, which gives a noticeably demonic sound. Any metal guitarist uses and abuses this whether he is aware of it or not. And they owe it all to Tony Iommi. Most of the songs on this album are decidedly bluesy, but this only serves to reinforce how closely related metal and blues really are. Once again, nobody can consider himself a metal fan until he's heard this album.

Recommended tracks: Black Sabbath, N.I.B.

41. Morbid Angel - Altars of Madness
(https://www.morbidangel.com/images/altars_cover.jpg)

Today, Morbid Angel is a bit of an insult to the death metal world with their hip-hop and techno experimentation, but back in the late 80s, they bridged the gap between the thrash-influenced death metal of Death and the more brutal death metal of bands like Cannibal Corpse. This album's influence can be felt in practically any death metal album released in the 90s. Trey Azagthoth and Pete Sandoval remain one of the most respected figures in death metal because of their relentless riffing and drumming, respectively. Specifically, Trey's soloing on this album seems like he was trying to make each part a little bit more chaotic than the next. This album is pretty difficult to follow unless you're paying close attention. It tends to just blur by. Chances are, if you like death metal, you've already heard this album quite a few times.

Recommended tracks: Maze of Torment, Chapel of Ghouls, Blasphemy

Never heard of Polkadot, sounds interesting, might check it out.

I&W and Black Sabbath are godly albums! :D

40. Symphony X - Paradise Lost
(https://images.uulyrics.com/cover/s/symphony-x/album-paradise-lost.jpg)

Symphony X is like Ayreon, where people are immensely divided with their opinions. Most call them cheesy, and don't give them a second glance. Those people are wankers. This album is far and away Symphony X's heaviest album, and I'd say it almost has more in common with power metal than prog. The progressive tendencies come with the musicianship of Michael Romeo. Some of the guitar solos on this album are absolutely monstrous, stuff that no other player could pull off. Of course, special mention must be given to vocalist Russel Allen, who has his shining moment in the title track. His voice has a raw emotion that very few singers can emulate, and in case you aren't aware, he's a flawless live performer. Overall, this album is most likely Symphony X's most accessible album, since there aren't any 20 minute epics. Newcomers should definitely listen to it.

Recommended tracks: Set the World On Fire, Eve of Seduction, Seven

39. Primus - Sailing the Seas of Cheese
(https://www.thereformedbroker.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/seas-of-cheese.jpg)

After however many albums on this list have featured guitar as the dominant instrument, we've got an album that has more impressive bass than anything. Les Claypool is an absolute master of the instrument, and he sings these broken phrases at the same time. I can't even begin to comprehend how he does it. This album is very entertaining, it's funky and incredibly heavy at the same time. Even for those who don't like bass or thing the music is too "bare" (this can happen in power trios, except Rush for some reason), there's plenty of lyrical humor to keep the album interesting throughout it's runtime. Pretty much everyone has heard the song "Jerry Was a Race Car Driver", and that song is here, but the rest of the songs are just as good. Check it out.

Recommended tracks: Sgt. Baker, Is it Luck?, Tommy the Cat

38. Pain of Salvation - The Perfect Element Part I
(https://www.metal-archives.com/images/1/6/5/7/1657.jpg)

This album is a true progressive masterpiece. Singer and songwriter Daniel Gildenlow has crafted a touching conceptual piece about two characters from troubled and abusive pasts. The music has something I thought I'd never see in any album, pacing. This album builds up much like a movie would. By the bridge of the title track, the intensity of this album is completely palpable. The music isn't very technically challenging, but it's more impressive to me how moving some of the pieces are. Simplicity is definitely the way to go with an album like this. There's not too much else to say with this one, just listen to it.

Recommended tracks: In the Flesh, Ashes, Reconciliation

I bought Paradise Lost because of the "Others Recommend" section on Napster when listening to Dream Theater.  You're right, it's quite heavy but quite unique (although I don't listen to a lot of power metal).  I really like Russel Allen's singing.  I read a review somewhere that he sounds a bit too much like Dio but is that a bad thing?  Still I don't crave listening to it as much as maybe Dream Theater.  I'm not sure why.

I would put Paradise Lost's title track in my "Top 20 songs of all time" list. The emotion in his voice is incredible. The whole album is good, but damn....dat title track.

The Perfect Element is another great album. Good picks Justin. :metal

Paradise Lost is fairly good, I really liked it when it came out and I was more into Prog Metal.
It's not the type of album I would just put on now, but I still think it's a good album for what it is, even though Symphony X as a whole has never 'clicked' with me.
The Perfect Element is also a fairly good album, I remember spinning it several times on the same day when I was checking out PoS, and it has some solid songs on it.
I know most PoS fans seem to have a 'Remedy Lane VS TPE'-type of debate, I'd probably say that I prefer The Perfect Element.

Have not heard Primus, so can't comment.

I used to listen to a lot of Symphony X back in my time, and for the most part, they're very cheesy, but I don't think they're bad (Candlelight Fantasia is a gorgeous song). And Russell Allen is a hell of a singer.

Great to see The Perfect Element here--one of the most powerful and emotional pieces of music ever conceived. Primus is pretty cool, too.

YES! Agree with both these comments. I like a bit of SX from time to time - definitely cheesy but so epic as well and they have some good stuff. Paradise Lost is a good album, although far from their best IMO. The good songs are really great, but there are some quite boring ones as well.

Primus are an excellent band, although I only own the Brown album, I might check this one out, Tommy the Cat is a great song.

Paradise Lost has also been one of my fav albums over the last few years.  Addictive, heavy, excellent performances and just wonderful songs, I seriously don't understand why people just write them off.

Perfect Element is also an album that I have fallen in love with over the last year.  Wonderful music, great contrast between songs and really, every song on the album is amazing.  I agree to a certain extent how you say the music isn't technically challenged, but honestly, the band has amazing chops.

37. Deicide - Once Upon the Cross
(https://discotecaxaranga.com/images/deicide-once%20upon%20a%20cross)

Deicide are another one of the relatively well-known death metal bands. This album is what some would call a quick hit, a drive-by musical experience if you will. This album is ridiculously short, and if it was a second longer, it'd be a complete failure. This is a perfectly calculated death metal attack. Any time I'm in a sour mood and just need something incredibly intense to eat up a half-hour, this album's got the exact idea. Every song is absolutely killer, and it contains arguably the greatest death metal song of all time, "When Satan Rules His World". Oh, and if you're against organized religion in any fashion, the lyrics will definitely appeal.

Recommended tracks: Christ Denied, When Satan Rules His World, Kill the Christian, Trick or Betrayed

36. Cannibal Corpse - Tomb of the Mutilated
(https://www.metal-archives.com/images/7/7/0/770.jpg)

Aside from having one of the best album covers ever, this album is another flawless slab of death metal. This one holds the coveted title of "First death metal album I ever heard". I remember going to my then-girlfriend's house, and downloading it off of LimeWire (seriously). As I listened to it, I felt like I was being born again. My eyes had been opened to a whole new type of metal, and holy shit did I like it. It was more intense than thrash, which I had been listening to exclusively. That, and the lyrics are so ridiculously violent that it physically repulsed me. To a metal-obsessed teenager, that's all it took. And, what was my then-girlfriend's response to my new awakening, you ask?

"...that's not even music." Yeah, that relationship went south.

Recommended tracks: Hammer Smashed Face, I Cum Blood (seriously), Necropedophile (seriously), Entrails Ripped From a Virgin's Cunt (...seriously)

35. Meat Loaf - Bat Out of Hell II: Back Into Hell
(https://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51NFbmCn7vL._SL500_AA300_.jpg)

Another old favorite here. My dad was responsible for Meat Loaf. He played me Bat Out of Hell at an early age, and I didn't think much of it, because there's way too much going on with that album for a child to understand and appreciate. When I started getting into Pink Floyd and Metallica, I listened to Bat Out of Hell again and fell in love. I quickly got a hold of the sequel, and found something even better. This album is a real piece of work. It touches on a million different genres, while still maintaining the pop sensibilities. In fact, I'd probably go so far as to call this progressive pop-rock. Loads of people respect Yes for breaking into the mainstream with an 8 minute song, but Jim Steinman and Meat Loaf did the same thing with a 12 minute song. If you can find me another 75 minute pop album that covers this much ground and doesn't collapse in on itself, well, fucking show it to me.

Recommended tracks: Life is a Lemon and I Want My Money Back, Objects in the Rearview Mirror May Appear Closer Than They Are, Everything Louder Than Everything Else

(https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-wP4ZSbwdunU/Ta3wBzACHaI/AAAAAAAAGOo/dPTUouAsznw/s1600/Alestorm%2B-%2BBack%2BThrough%2BTime%2B%2528Front%2BCover%2529%2Bby%2BEneas.jpg)

For an album I heard not more than 2 weeks ago, this one was a very quick grower. This is an album that absolutely blew me away on the first listen, and every single one after that. The pirate theme is still as funny as ever after 2 albums of it, and the music is always maturing. One of the best things about this album is the new situations they come up with for the pirates to be a part of. Singing about finding treasure, drinking beer, and having lots of nasty sex with the wenches wouldn't be able to hold audiences forever, of course. My favorite scenario is in the title track where they travel back in time to kick the shit out of the vikings. How much more metal can it get?

Recommended tracks: Back Through Time, Shipwrecked, Barrett's Privateers

33. Anthrax - Spreading the Disease

This album is to Among the Living as Metallica's Ride the Lightning is to Master of Puppets. Everyone loves Among the Living, but people tend to overlook Spreading the Disease, which is a better album with better songs and cooler vocals. Before Joey Belladonna adopted the growlier tone of voice he would make famous on Among the Living, he was another singer going for the Bruce Dickinson vibe. The big change here was these vocals were being used for thrash metal. Metallica, Megadeth, and Slayer were never big on the soaring vocals, opting for more of a yelling style, but Joey could sing, and he could sing with the best of them. To top it off, this is one of the more unique thrash albums from the mid-80s in that the bass is fully audible most of the time, and more focus is on the vocal melodies. It's just a great album that a lot of people tend to skip in favor of the more successful Among the Living.

32. Black Sabbath - Paranoid
(https://www.covermesongs.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/Black-Sabbath-Paranoid-Image.jpg)

This is an album that I don't even need to explain. It is a scientific fact that any album with War Pigs, Paranoid, Iron Man, Electric Funeral, and Hand of Doom on it is going to be pretty fucking good. 'Nuff said.

Recommended tracks: The ones I listed up there, but the whole album's amazing.

Eh, I didn't think the new Alestorm measured up to CMR.  "Death Throes of the Terrorsquid" was a pretty big disappointment.  It was like they ripped off "Rime of the Ancient Mariner."  Badly.  I love the title track though.  As much as I love Alestorm, I have to scold you severely for putting it above some other actual fantastic albums like I&W.  I mean, come on man.

And that Sabbath album is good.  Never was a fan of Anthrax.

It was initially much higher, like #16 high, but I realized that was kind of ridiculous, so I switched it with an album that it turns out I like a hell of a lot more than I initially thought.

31. Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon
(https://t0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSABhbRRrVzpVyIU_a3kZ4cOPPUoTtra4-Xdx7o8msT1hvmYjawhQ)

The only complaint I could see anybody having about this album being on the list is that it's too low. Anyone who doesn't enjoy this album is quite frankly, an idiot. Every single aspect of it is absolutely timeless. This is one of the few albums that can work in two ways. It's perfectly acceptable as a pop album, since the vast majority of it is incredibly accessible. Numerous songs from Dark Side are still played on classic rock radio. On the other hand, it's also a thematic album that's extremely progressive. It's very easy to just zone out and take it all in, especially with the instrumental tracks. There's nothing else to say about this album. If you haven't heard it, you haven't lived. The only reason it's lower on the list than 30 others is because I've overplayed it, and there are albums I enjoy more.

Recommended tracks: All of them.

30. The Offspring - Americana
(https://www.beermelodies.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/OFFSPRING-AMERICANA.gif)

Punk is a passion of mine I'm sure few people are aware of. Slipknot and The Offspring,  the unlikely duo they are, got me into good music. This album was absolutely huge for me back in the day. The Offspring present a different type of punk than the pop-punk of bands like Green Day and blink-182. Sure, it's still quite catchy, but it's got so much more of an edge than the other stuff. Their earlier material is even heavier. This album happens to be my second favorite Offspring album. I love pretty much every song (even Feelings, fuck the haters), and Pay the Man is definitely the coolest song the band has ever attempted. If progressive punk were ever to exist, The Offspring would have created it with that song. Highly recommended.

Recommended tracks: Have You Ever, Staring at the Sun, She's Got Issues, Pay the Man

29. Porcupine Tree - Fear of a Blank Planet
(https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/b6/Fear_of_a_blank_planet.jpg)

I can really relate to this album, even though it's essentially condemning the type of people it would relate to. The album is basically about teenagers who are constantly connected to the internet and other electronic devices. The kids eventually end up terminally bored, and the world feels like a blank place. It's really difficult to sum up my feelings about this album. Even though it makes me feel like shit for being able to relate to it in the way that I do, it's also strangely therapeutic. The album has a very dark atmosphere, and it just feels good. Unfortunately, I can't really think of any other way to describe it. Just know that I'm connected to this album on a deep, personal level.

Recommended tracks: Anesthetize (One of my favorite songs ever), Way Out of Here
Title: Re: Top 50 Albums: The UMH Experience
Post by: skydivingninja on June 13, 2011, 11:27:07 AM
DSOTM would be around the same spot on my list for the same reasons.  Love it, but its only so low because I've listened to it so much.  Don't care for the Offspring.

I just listened to FOABP + Nil Recurring for the first time in a while last night.  Its such a good album and gets a considerable amount of flak compared to other PT albums that it doesn't really deserve.  I also agree with your two recommended songs.

Btw, here's my FOABP/NR tracklist:

FOABP
My Ashes
Cheating the Polygraph
Anesthetize
Normal
Sentimental
Nil Recurring
What Happens Now?
Way Out of Here
Sleep Together

Its eerie how well everything fits together like this.

28. Devin Townsend - Ocean Machine: Biomech
(https://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51DD2MY19HL._SL500_AA300_.jpg)

Well, here's an artist I'm sure absolutely nobody was expecting. Devin Townsend is a musical genius. This album came out very early in his career, so it was readily apparent to anybody who listened to Ocean Machine that this guy had a hell of a career ahead of him. I can't think of a more aptly named album on this entire list. Most of this album, as a result of its production style and the atmospherics, feels very much like being completely engulfed by the ocean. While most of my favorite albums have a light or dark feel to them, Devin Townsend's are the only albums that I sense colors to. This album is the deepest shade of blue. From the opening notes of Seventh Wave to the terrifying scream at the end of the relatively subdued Things Beyond Things, this album is a marvel of beauty, much like watching the ocean. Multiple listens are required to through the wall of sound, but this is one of the most rewarding listens one could ever hear. The highlight for any seasoned Devy fan is the combo of Funeral, Bastard, and The Death of Music, which is arguably one of the greatest 30 minutes of music ever recorded.

Recommended tracks: Seventh Wave, Life, Regulator, the three I mentioned above.

27. Testament - The New Order
(https://4.bp.blogspot.com/__dTHyM5LqeM/SH1fl5P1ctI/AAAAAAAAEcQ/2ozl-9sG0oI/s400/testament_-_the_new_order.jpg)

Another 80s thrash album by a band that's not in the big 4. Testament was always right on the verge of turning the big 4 into the big 5, and had their first album been released a few years earlier, they probably would have. The Legacy was an absolutely brutal thrash album with lead playing that ran circles around Metallica. The New Order kept the sound and made the music more accessible. There are even some instrumental cuts that set the mood even more. This is another very dark album.  Chuck Billy has always had one of the more intriguing voices in thrash, and it's in top form here. They even managed to cover Nobody's Fault by Aerosmith without it sounding awful. This is a masterfully crafted thrash album that belongs up there with the classics.

Recommended tracks: The New Order, Trial By Fire, Into the Pit, Disciples of the Watch

26. Spock's Beard - The Light
(https://www.progarchives.com/progressive_rock_discography_covers/320/cover_710151582009.jpg)

Most people cite "V" as the best Spock's Beard album, but I beg to differ. This was Spock's Beard's first album, and already they have 3 songs over 10 minutes. Not exactly "playing it safe" for their debut. For the most part, this risk really pays off. There are tons of excellent musical ideas that fit together perfectly. Odd time signatures, choral work, loud and obnoxious guitar work, all the ingredients are there for a killer prog album. Plus, hearing Born-Again-Christian Neal Morse screaming "FUCK YOU" at the top of his voice in The Water is definitely one of the funniest things I've ever had the pleasure of listening to.

Recommended tracks: The Light, The Water

25. Slayer - Reign in Blood
(https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/8/8e/Reign_in_blood.jpg)

Simply put, this is the fastest, most intense thrash album ever created by anyone. If you can find one that's more insane than this one, you're living a lie. 10 songs at an average of 220 BPM, lyrics ripe with violence and blasphemy, one of the most skilled drummers in metal, ferocious guitar assaults from Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman. To use a humorous metaphor, that's a recipe for one deadly thrash metal cookie. The first time I heard this album, I kept listening to it again and again because I just couldn't get enough of it. It was a daily listen for about 5 months before I started to get tired of it. Even then, this is one of those albums I can put on at any time and still love it.

Recommended tracks: Angel of Death, Altar of Sacrifice, Reborn, Postmortem

24. Devin Townsend - Infinity
(https://img508.imageshack.us/img508/4936/51115590.jpg)

This one may seem like an odd choice, even for long-time Devin fans. Infinity isn't one of Devin's most popular albums, but he has stated numerous times that it's his favorite (this was before the DTP, so maybe it has changed by now). This one, to me, is a great representation of all that Devin does. Truth is your epic instrumental opening that lays down the law right away. This gives way into Christeen, which is a delightful pop song. After that is Bad Devil, a crazy song that touches on Devin's more fun aspects. The rest of the album follows that pattern, all the while telling a conceptual story about the workings of the universe, and how we have no idea how complex our world really is. This concept alone puts it high up on my list, since I can really relate to wondering how the hell the universe works. A few bands have been referred to as "thinking-man's metal", but no other album fits that description as well as Infinity. Another interpretation is that the album is representative of Devin's bipolar disorder, since it tends to swing from beautifully depressing to chaotic and fun at the drop of a hat. The album culminates in a comforting message before Noisy Pink Bubbles saying, "It's all right, it's all right." I could try to explain it more, but it's tough to grasp. Just listen to it.

Recommended tracks: The whole thing. Listening to individual tracks ruins the natural flow.

23. The Offspring - Ixnay on the Hombre
(https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/1/11/The_Offspring-Ixnay_on_the_Hombre.jpg)

I could pretty much redo the Americana write-up with this one. But, this album is functionally different from Americana in the tone of the songs. While Americana is mostly full of fun songs that sometimes have depressing lyrics, Ixnay has a few songs that are just so full of emotion that it's hard not to be touched. This is all coming from a punk band that writes songs about little kids eating dog shit after thinking it's a candy bar. Seriously though, Gone Away and Amazed are two of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard, and pretty much anybody can relate to the feeling of helplessness expressed in both of them. That's what impresses me so much about The Offspring. The first half of the album is mostly fun punk songs about silly topics, and then a song like Gone Away kicks in. It's a pretty incredible experience.

Recommended tracks: The Meaning of Life, Gone Away, I Choose, All I Want, Amazed

Cool to see some Devin Townsend!
I've just recently discovered him, and only been listening to Ghost and Decon (with the exception of Ki once in the car), but I really like him, and it's a good sign that there's already two of his older albums on a list like this.  :hat

I'm honestly surprised to see Spock's Beard on your list.  I didn't think they'd be your sort of thing.  I love the Light as well, though the first disc of Snow destroys everything else they've ever done (the second disc...eh).  I wouldn't put Infinity above O:M, but you did a good job of explaining why you like it as much as you do.

Oh, and lolslayer, loltestament, and loloffspring.

22. Nevermore - Enemies of Reality
(https://1.bp.blogspot.com/_CAWz3DZiwAI/SLy-HG0emdI/AAAAAAAAADg/HNl7Dgq_zbs/s400/b000a69rfi03lzzzzzzzcd4.jpg)

Let's be clear. The original mix of this album absolutely blows. However, I was lucky enough to hear the remaster first. Therefore, I don't have a jaded opinion on what I feel is Nevermore's best album. Unfortunately, the original mix was bad enough to put people off the album completely. I weep at night for those people, because this album is a true work of genius. Every song here is pure gold, and ridiculously heavy. The genius lies in the pacing of the album. The first 2 tracks are fast and chaotic, while the next two kick down the tempo, but still keeping the heavy aspect in tact. The ballad, Tomorrow Turned Into Yesterday, manages to be catchy and soul-crushing at the same time. This pattern repeats again, 2 fast, 2 slow, and then the album is closed with the absolutely ferocious Seed Awakening. At just over 40 minutes long, the album hits the listener like a sledgehammer, but doesn't stick around long enough to be annoying. In fact, I wish it was longer.

Recommended tracks: Enemies of Reality, Ambivalent, I Voyager, Who Decides

21. Floater - Alter
(https://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51J57F50W6L.jpg)

I'm almost willing to bet that anybody who's heard about this band heard about them from me. As far as I know, I'm the only hardcore fan on the entire board. This is another crying shame, because these guys are phenomenal. Their music reminds me of a less psychotic Primus with a bit of a grunge feel. The singer's voice goes through many transformations, each fitting every moment perfectly. The drums have a tribal flair to them that adds a unique dynamic to the bass-driven alt rock. This album in particular is quite eclectic. There are soft, ballad songs with string textures, heavy Primus-like songs, and songs unlike anything I've heard before. Perhaps the strongest aspect of the band is the lyrics. There's loads of clever lines, particularly in the song Hollywood. Overall, this is a criminally overlooked band and album that must be explored further by all people.

Recommended tracks: Zero Hour, Safety, Luddite, 4 Down (A Toast)

20. Strapping Young Lad - Alien
(https://www.remnantsofreason.com/images/reviews/Strapping_Young_Lad-Alien_cover.jpg)

This is an album that grabs you by the throat and skull-fucks you until you can't stand it anymore. These songs have an intensity that no other band could ever be capable of matching. From the start of the album to the 8th track, it's a non-stop assault of pure brutality, with some of the most crazed vocals ever. The image one can glean from this album is a twisted psychopath who was just pushed a bit too far. The topics covered range from the simple "Hey, fuck you, asshole" to the very meaning of life itself. There's at least one song on here for any mood. Pissed at the opposite sex? Hit up the hit single "Love?". Pissed at everyone? Shitstorm is there. Pissed at your life and its lack of direction? Play some Thalamus. This album got me through some dark times.

Recommended tracks: Shitstorm, Love?, We Ride, Thalamus, Zen

The singer reminds me a little of System of a Down's singer although this guy is much better.  Maybe a better comparison is Riverside's singer.  Most of this album is pretty heady and mellow yet still metal.  I enjoyed listening to this.  I'm adding it to my wishlist.

19. Blind Guardian - Tales From the Twilight World
(https://www.upv.es/tamtam/redaccion/santiago/bg/discos/cover3.gif)

Behold, the only power metal album on this list, and it has more in common with thrash. Go figure. Anyway, this album was a lock for the top 20 if only because of Hansi Kursch, who has one of the sexiest voices I've ever heard. Extra points are given for the intricate guitar solos and harmonies in the songs. The songs can get a bit samey, but they're all so great that it's hard to care. The lyrics are cheesy as all hell, but that's to be expected from a power metal band from Germany. This produces some lulzy song titles such as Welcome to Dying, but the songs are great, and that's all that matters.

Recommended tracks: Traveler in Time, Welcome to Dying, Lost in the Twilight Hall

18. Death - Leprosy
(https://www.rankopedia.com/CandidatePix/72485.gif)

First off, a little disclaimer. Pre-90s Death kicks the living shit out of post-90s Death. While Chuck's later material still kicks ass, he nailed down what death metal should be with this album. It has slow, trudging riffs and blistering, thrash-inspired bits that compliment each other perfectly. The vocals are actually quite clear compared to other bands, letting the morbid lyrics shine. The drums and bass pound the listener into submission, while the classic, slightly overused tremolo wailing dominates the guitar solos. The production is suitably raw, which just adds to the sheer intensity. Every song on this album should be considered a death metal classic. It's seriously that good.

Recommended tracks: Leprosy, Born Dead, Left to Die, Pull the Plug, Choke On It

17. Riot - The Privilege of Power
(https://1.bp.blogspot.com/_B5tXq1Onedc/RzpxcmACeHI/AAAAAAAAABg/xBKPIa7oTuY/s320/Riot%2B-%2BThe%2BPrivilege%2BOf%2BPower.jpg)

And now an unfortunately overlooked 80s speed metal band. This album has a production style very reminiscent of power metal, and Tony Moore's vocals do nothing to get rid of that idea, but this is way better than power metal. Beginning with a start-stop riff with radio and television sounds underneath, the album makes its loose concept readily apparent. It's mainly about the controlling of the media and how easy it is to brainwash the public. While this idea is only touched on in a few songs, it's a pretty cool theme. Guitarist Mark Reale is the driving force behind Riot, and he makes his presence very well known. The riffs are not standard Chord-chuggachuggachugga fare. There's plenty of technicality buried, and the solos are where he really shines. Why Mark is not more respected when speed metal is discussed is a mystery to me. Another cool aspect of this album that keeps it from sounding like "just another speed metal album" is the horn section. While it only shows up once in a while, it's a nice touch. Overall, this is one that needs more attention.

Recommended tracks: On Your Knees, Killer, Dance of Death, Storming the Gates of Hell

16. King Diamond - Abigail
(https://www.metal-archives.com/images/1/1/7/6/1176.jpg)

I don't even have to give a reason why this album is good, and I feel like describing why it's amazing may ruin the surprise for anyone who hasn't heard a bit of King's music. So, if you HAVEN'T heard this album, go fucking get it. For those of you who have heard it, you already know why it's good, but I'll embellish to make you want to listen to it again. First of all, King Diamond is a fucking insane beast of a singer. Nobody else in metal can even wish to have a vocal range as extensive as King's. Some people may find his voice annoying, but those people ignore the amount of talent it takes to keep a voice like that singing strong after nearly 30 years. The second big reason this album owns everything is because of Andy LaRocque. His guitar playing has a decidedly neo-classical feel, but he doesn't sound like a Malmsteen rip-off. His solos are some of the most creative and unique I've ever heard, and with King's knack for catchy, stratospheric vocal melodies, this is a metal album that is amazing on principle. I haven't even mentioned the story that holds the album together and makes the already freakishly dark atmosphere just a bit more disturbing. Seriously, this is one of the darkest sounding albums I've ever heard, and you absolutely need to hear it, again and again.

Recommended tracks: Mansion in Darkness, The Family Ghost, Abigail

15. Dog Fashion Disco - Adultery
(https://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/6146VHF0VBL._SL500_AA300_.jpg)

Before there was Polkadot Cadaver, Dog Fashion Disco was around. Originally named Hug the Retard, DFD are an avant-garde metal fan's wet-dream. This is some of the weirdest music I've ever heard. Todd Smith's voice can go from a soft croon to a vicious roar at the drop of a hat. The guitar work by Jasan Stepp is rather simple, but it's fitting to the songs. Most of the technicality comes from the unconventional song structures and the horn section. The horns give the songs a 70s feel, adding to the atmosphere of the story. The story is, of course, about a serial killer who has voices in his head and a penchant for killing hookers. This is an album that must be heard by any music fan.

Recommended tracks: Silent Film, Darkest Days, The Hitchhiker

14. Between the Buried and Me - Colors
(https://thelefty.files.wordpress.com/2008/09/btbam-colors.jpg)

This album was a fluke, in my opinion. BTBAM had never really appealed to me until they released this album, and they haven't done anything for me since. The album plays out like one long song, and it's one hell of a song at that. The music is pretty standard metalcore during the second track, but it eventually gets very interesting with some avant-garde touches. These kinds of surprises go on for the rest of the album, making it one of the most captivating first listens ever. The vocals are either low and growly, or smooth and soothing. Occasionally, a higher clean voice with some texture to it will show up, but very rarely. The rest of the band is top-class where musicianship is concerned, and they show it any chance they can get. Overall, this album is quite an adventure.

Recommended tracks: Sun of Nothing, Ants of the Sky, Prequel to the Sequel

I still haven't gotten into anything Between the Buried and Me have done, but maybe I just need the right song or something.  I'll listen to Colors sometime someday.

Abigail is easily one of the best heavy metal albums of all time.  When I discovered King and this album, it changed my world for the better, simply a perfect album.  Every song is a highlight.  And yes, the guitar work between Andy and Michael Denner is just mindblowing, some of the best leads I've ever heard.  Anyone who calls themself a heavy metal fan should know this album inside out.

Colors is also one of the best albums of the last 5 years.

I would definitely agree.  Really, every KD album is great, I mean the Fatal Portrait, Abigail, Them, Conspiracy and The Eye run of albums is perfect.  Spider, Graveyard and Voodoo are top quality metal also.

House of God is probably my fav tied with Abigial, it's just a perfect metal album.  Great, horrifying story, great songs, and the team of Andy and Glen Drover on that album slays.  Abigail 2, Puppet Master and Soul are amazing aswell.  It's a shame King has been so sick lately.  I hope we see another studio album from him.

And when you think of King's discography along with all the albums he did with MF, the man is a genius.

13. Ayreon - The Human Equation
(https://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/61c-laGXNLL._SL500_AA300_.jpg)

Alright, put aside all of your "LOLAYREON" bullshit right now. I don't care how cheesy or generic you find the music, I'm going to lay it down right now why, OBJECTIVELY, no self-respecting music fan can ever dislike this album. First off, the all-star cast of vocalists. James LaBrie, Mikael Akerfeldt, Marcela Bovio, Devin Townsend, Mike Baker, and about 6 other awesome singers who you've never heard of outside of this album. Second, this album is proggy as fuck. There's so many different genres being represented here. No song sounds like the last one. You've got flutes, synthesizers, organs, guitars, a fucking didgeridoo, violins, what more could you possibly need in a perfect prog metal album? The final ingredient into the awesomeness is the story. The dueling of the emotions and the philosophical questions are just perfect, and they compliment the ethereal atmosphere. This album is beyond amazing, and I don't give a flying fuck what anyone else thinks.

Recommended tracks: Every single one of them.

12. Megadeth - Rust in Peace
(https://www.rankopedia.com/CandidatePix/69714.gif)

This is a definitive speed metal classic, no doubt about that. The guitar duo of Dave Mustaine and Marty Friedman shall never be matched. I really don't know what else to say about this one. If you're a metal fan, you've probably already heard it.

Recommended tracks: Holy Wars...The Punishment Due, Hangar 18, Tornado of Souls, Rust in Peace...Polaris

11. Dream Theater - Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
(https://www.progarchives.com/progressive_rock_discography_covers/378/cover_3012131282008.jpg)

96 minutes of bliss, this album. Dream Theater has always been about 5 of the best musicians on the planet making some of the best music ever created. 6 truly epic songs, one broken up into 8 movements. This is one of the few true progressive masterworks. The first 5 songs are all rather experimental, and shockingly, they all work very well. The title track could have been a classical symphony back in the 1800s. Tons of classical influences, and the themes and their respective reprises are just chilling. Very few times has a song affected me as much as Six Degrees has. To this day, I can listen to it several times in a day and not get bored. Overall, yet another flawless album.

Recommended tracks: The Glass Prison, Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence

The top 10 is just around the corner. I am prepared to offer an unspecified gift if someone can accurately guess the albums and the correct order in which they are in.

The cool thing about The Human Equation is that it sums up the only Ayreon material worth hearing in a nice, 2-CD package. The ending absolutely kills the album, though.

Rust in Peace is excellent. SDOIT is the last worthwhile DT album as of today.

I wouldn't call that a whine though, it's more of a snarl.

It sounds a bit silly, but it doesn't ruin the song for me.

There are definite times when he snarls but there are time when he's too nasally and that to me is when he whines.  I don't mind the snarls.

Wow, those were three GREAT albums. If there are any albums in the top ten which I haven't heard, I'm going to listen to them just out of respect of that 3 album selection.

I'd go so far to say that King Diamond's band is the most underrated heavy metal band of all time.

Preach the truth brothaman.

I'm beginning to think you and I have the same taste in music. Both of us are massive Trivium/King Diamond/Savatage fanboys. :lol

10. Opeth - Blackwater Park
(https://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51Wh2otbdqL._SL500_AA300_.jpg)

If it hasn't been established already with this list, I really love dark music. This entire album has a cold, winter night atmosphere that has never been perfected until now. The usage of dissonant chords, the synth textures, and the doubling of acoustic and electric guitars is brought together by the genius of producer Steven Wilson to create the ultimate darkness. While the atmosphere can be unsettling to some, I find it very soothing. I've been sleeping to this album for the last year (it will occasionally switch with Dream Theater's "Awake", for the irony). It's brutal as hell, but the soft sections are so beautiful and ethereal. Even people who hate death metal can find something to love here.

Recommended tracks: The Leper Affinity, Bleak, The Funeral Portrait, Blackwater Park

9. Devin Townsend Project - Ghost
(https://www.mindovermetal.org/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/DTP-Ghost-300x300.jpg)

While BWP is beautiful for its darkness, Ghost is beautiful for its light. After a stress-filled day, this is an album that can make everything okay again. This might sound cheesy, but Ghost makes me realize the beauty of life and nature. It's a great companion piece to looking through a National Geographic magazine, or browsing pictures of waterfalls or whatever on the internet. The flute that takes up a lot of space on the album is a great touch that adds to the calm. Overall, this album is the perfect closer of the DTP, wrapping up the sheer chaos that preceded it without feeling out of place. Quite an achievement.

Recommended tracks: Heart Baby, Feather, Ghost, Blackberry, Infinite Ocean

Well, everything that needs to be said about Blackwater Park has already been said. Ghost is a beautiful album but I couldn't rank it on my top 50 after only being out for a month or so.

I really love dark music. This entire album has a cold, winter night atmosphere that has never been perfected until now.

I haven't heard Devin's new albums but I find it strange that it would make someones top 10 list after just being released.  Not having a go, I guess I'll have to get the album and check it out.

Looking forward to the rest of the top 10.

8. Slayer - Seasons in the Abyss
(https://www.metal-archives.com/images/2/1/8/218.jpg)

This is far and away Slayer's best album. It's got the fast and furious madness from Reign in Blood, mixed together with the slow, trudging metal from South of Heaven. This is blended together to make metal bliss. The blistering opener, War Ensemble, re-establishes that Slayer are still the best at playing fast music. The next few tracks, including classics Expendable Youth and Dead Skin Mask, are more mid-tempo, but just as heavy, and even a little bit catchy. The lyrics are disturbing and evil enough to make the true metal heads in the room sing along. The real treat of this album is the epic title track. The 6 minute song is easily Slayer's crowning achievement. The chorus actually has a bit of a hook, and the music still has the Slayer name scribbled all over it. This album is better than Reign in Blood because of its variety. Because each song isn't full-on thrash, listeners get a chance to breathe. This of course means the album is more accessible too, and a lot of the elements that Slayer haters (coughidiotscough) are not present. This is the ultimate introduction to Slayer, and comes highly recommended by one of the 2 Slayer authorities of the board.

Recommended tracks: War Ensemble, Expendable Youth, Dead Skin Mask, Skeletons of Society, Seasons in the Abyss

7. Porcupine Tree - Deadwing
(https://img.emuleday.com/data/img/47/4768f386e132b1523d1c4a6817edf4c8.jpg)

This album is an underrated gem among the immensely strong Porcupine Tree catalog. The true fans get it, obviously, but a lot of PT fans like to blow their loads all over In Absentia or Lightbulb Sun, but Deadwing is the ultimate Porcupine Tree album, and your life will get better as soon as you admit it. The concept of the album is somewhat of a mystery, but the consensus is that it's a bit of a ghost story. The whole album has a very ghostly and ethereal atmosphere, even during the pleasant lullaby, Lazarus. There's a fair share of heavy moments as well, mainly in the two shorter songs, Shallow and Open Car. The sometimes abrupt transitions give the album its flow. This was the first PT album to have a "centerpiece", and it's a contender for PT's best song ever. Arriving Somewhere But Not Here is what I'd consider a condensed form of the album. The soft, haunting parts duel with the heavy parts and it's fucking tasty. Every song is a winner here though, and you're doing yourself a huge disservice if you don't explore it further.

Recommended tracks: Deadwing, Lazarus, Arriving Somewhere But Not Here, The Start of Something Beautiful

I know you have become disillusioned with them over the years, but not seeing RtL, MoP, or AJFA is shocking. I remember me asking you back when I would annoy the shit out of you on AIM if you still dug any Metallica, and I remember you saying that the only album you still dug, and the album that is by far Metallica's best is Ride the Lightning. 6. maudlin of the Well - Bath
(https://static.rateyourmusic.com/album_images/dd347f7d844a6a32d92576841b6dc0bf/35217.jpg)

This is one of the most varied, unique albums I've ever heard in my life. Apart from the standard death metal instrumentation, we've got 3 different types of saxophone, trumpets, pipe organ, and even some avant-garde percussion created from what I believe to be dropping rocks into water. And yes, I said death metal instrumentation. While the opening track is rather soothing up until the end, with the saxophone solo meandering over the lush guitar melodies, all hell breaks lose with They Aren't All Beautiful. Tortured vocals, blast beats, and overly distorted guitars litter the music. Just as abruptly as the chaos started, it ends. The rest of the album pretty much follows a similar pattern. From jaw-dropping beauty to ass-kicking brutality, the album never lets the listener get comfortable. And yet, it flows beautifully. Like Deadwing, one of the most varied albums in the world manages to be the most cohesive at the same time. I can't explain it. Anyone who's bored with normal music needs to check this album out, post haste.

Recommended tracks: Heaven and Weak, The Ferryman, Birth Pains of Astral Projection

5. Dream Theater - Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes From a Memory
(https://bearseatpeople.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/dtheater-scenes-memory.jpg)

This is the ultimate concept album, right here, and the story is the weakest aspect. From start to finish, this album is a complete and total proggasm. Albums like these have the capability to turn top 40 listeners into prog elitists within 2 listens (I've done the research to prove it). Guitar solos, keyboard solos, bass solos, guitar/keyboard unisons, acrobatic vocals, odd time signatures, catchy choruses, and it still manages to be pretty heavy. Albums like these don't just happen. They are meticulously crafted to cater to every aspect of a prog fan's desire. If you're on this board and you haven't heard it, go away.

Recommended tracks: The entire thing.

4. Devin Townsend Project - Ki
(https://www.insideoutshop.de/images/DevinTownsendKiBooklet3D.jpg)

As beautiful an introduction to a four-album project as one can get. Those four notes say so much, even though it's probably the most simple part of the entire series. A calm start, followed by a building intensity that never really lets loose until the third song, and even then it's less of an explosion than anyone expects. This album is a mass of ebb and flow. Right when it seems like all hell's about to break loose, everything calms down and you're left wanting the release. This would seem annoying to pretty much any listener, but for fans who understand the concept, this album can be extremely powerful. When put into context with the rest of the project, it makes perfect sense. By the album's most chaotic moment (the climax of the title track, arguably one of the most incredible musical moments ever committed to recording), the satisfaction from the first quarter of the journey is so strong that it feels like it could have ended right there. However, it has 2 more songs left to calm down before the real heaviness kicks in with the second album. This is a truly amazing piece of music that won't be loved by everyone, but the people who do enjoy it will enjoy it until the end of time.

Recommended tracks: Everything

3. Strapping Young Lad - City
(https://www.metal-archives.com/images/1/5/8/158.jpg)

Every time I think about this album, I start drooling. If you ever want a collection of nine songs that will fuck your mind into brain-flavored pudding, this is the album to go to. From the opening clicks of Velvet Kevorkian to the ending grind of Spirituality, this album is a trip through the mind of a deranged, borderline homicidal maniac. The lyrics and overall concept of the album almost sounds a bit emo (big on the whole "nobody can fuck with me, I'm forging my own path, and if you don't like it, fuck you" attitude), but it's told with such ferocity that it evokes an image. This image isn't of a young Scottish emo straightening his hair, but of a late teen sitting in his room, reflecting on all the bullshit he's had to wade through. Bullshit that most people would never have to endure: drugs, people who always seem stupider than you and can't grasp that fact, everyone telling you what to do and how to act. I completely understand Devin's frame of mind with this album, and finding someone else who thinks the same way is just...comforting. This album is pretty much the only reason I made it through high school. Now that we've covered half of the reason why I adore this album, let's look at the actual music. This is the second most intense album I've ever heard. Even at what would seem like the heaviest moment (The chorus of Oh My Fucking God), it gets even heavier. It's a complete auditory assault from the beginning to the end. Barely controlled, fitting perfectly with the lyrical theme of losing control. This album completely changed my life, and I will forever hold it in high regard.

Recommended tracks: All Hail The New Flesh, Oh My Fucking God, Detox, Home Nucleonics, AAA

Alright, being the metal head that you are, I was surprised to see that no Metallica has come up yet. That was my pick. I doubt it will be there after you've put Seasons up, but not having it in your top 50 is shocking.
Not even I would consider any Metallica albums to be up there in my top 50. Maybe top 100.

However, I wouldn't call Deadwing "underrated", it's considered their best by many, and together with In Absentia I'd say it's their most popular.

2. Devin Townsend Project - Addicted
(https://www.waldheri.com/images/dtp_addicted.jpg)

This was the album that made me realize my love for Devin Townsend's music. Something so poppy and catchy couldn't possibly be this heavy at the same time. Any other artist would have driven himself to insanity trying to make it work, but Devin Townsend does it without breaking a sweat. The real key to this album's charm is the greatest female vocalist known to mankind, Anneke van Giersbergen. Her voice is the ultimate antithesis to Devin's raw growl. The opening of the first track makes this abundantly clear. Devin lets out a powerful roar, followed quickly by a soaring harmonized melody from Anneke. Instantly, the worlds of metal and pop collide, creating a truly unique piece of music. Anneke delivers her best vocal performance on the remake of Hyperdrive, from 2007's Ziltoid the Omniscient. She pumps more energy into that song than any other singer could hope to. Devin's operatic voice is not to be ignored, delivering some of the most chill-inducing moments on the album (My personal favorite is in Numbered!, "I'm alright to FLYYYYYYYYYYYYYY"). Overall, no words can do this album justice. Listen to it as soon as possible.

Recommended tracks: Addicted!, Bend it Like Bender!, Supercrush!, Numbered!

#1 will be announced tomorrow. I won't spoil anything, except that NOBODY in this thread has guessed correctly.

1. Devin Townsend Project - Deconstruction
(https://gunshyassassin.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/cover_181661342011_r.jpg)

This album gave me a headache when I first heard it. This is the only album to actually cause me physical pain because of how good it is. Every single time I listen to it, I feel like I am hearing the greatest piece of music ever created by anyone. I feel like I'm being given the key to the entire universe, and I can just fly around wherever I want.  I think the best way I can think of to summarize how I feel about this album is with a picture.

waaaaayyyy too much New stuff

FTFY

Full blown halo effect.  There should be a 6 month moratorium between hearing an album and trying to rate it.  If an album still has that new-toy fascination 6 months later...then its a classic.

I kinda agree.
Sure it might be different for everyone, but I have experienced albums that I loved at first listen, and loved the first week or so, but 2 months later it wasn't nearly as fantastic.
How an album sounds after a certain amount of time from first hearing it is a major part of it all IMO.

The thing is, the 2 DTP albums from 2009 changed my life in ways I thought impossible. I'm predicting that Decon and Ghost will have the same effect. The only other recent album was the Alestorm one, and I stand by it as well.

Ah, nevermind, misread.

Cool list.  Metal list.  List.

I'm pretty much putting a ban on any music from 2010 or 2011 on my top 50 list.  Can't really judge those albums with the rest of them right now.  Besides, only The Valley has a shot at cracking the top 50.  Maybe Ghost as well.

Deconstruction and Ghost were two huge disappointments for me this year.

I understand.

2010 should be fair game, but yeah 2011 is too recent really.

I have to say, for most of the list I was thinking it was interesting, but probably not my sort of music, although I did have to agree with the inclusion of the Sabbath albums and I&W, and then it got to DSofM and FOABP.

The list gained instant grains of win. I absolutely adore those albums both. Then I saw Opeth, 6DOIT, Deadwing and SFAM... And man, do I love those albums (answer: yes, yes I do. SFAM would probably be in my top five too, and BWP in my top fifty.) Oh, and The Light. That album is also geniusly fantastic.
