Post by: Obfuscation on June 03, 2011, 06:38:17 PM
So I am a huge fan of Animals As Leaders and have almost never seen anybody talk about them here so I wanted to know what you guys think about them???

Also they have already recorded a new album so I am looking forward to that very much.

Well I think AAL is much more than djent but that's just my opinion.

Periphery is the only band that can sucessfully pull off 3 guitarists. I'd rather see Tosin, Jean Baudin, and Mike Mangini do a collaboration album. That would kill the world.

There's plenty of bands that can do this. Iron Maiden comes to mind.

Tbh, I have never really listened to Periphery but will later today. Also that trio that you just mentioned is incredible.

Deathcore is the worst genre of music on this entire planet. I'd rather listen to boy bands from the 90's than deathcore.
Title: Re: Animals As Leaders!!! What do you think about them???
Post by: JosephAOI on June 03, 2011, 07:25:05 PM
In all honesty it was pretty cool at first IMO. After a while though the pummeling open-note breakdowns, constant blast beats, and screaming-induced-by-castration got on my nerves. Whitechapel was, IMO the only band that did all this while retaining any bit of melody or any sense of music other than "chug-chug-chuga-chuga-chug" (See the end of the song 'The Somatic Defilement').

Again,
MY OPINION.

No, the whole point of deathcore is that doesn't have melody. That's its whole purpose.

:20-on sounds pretty melodic to me.
Actually, I still kinda like Whitechapel  :D
A lot better than Sucide Silence, Carnifex, etc. who's pretty much complete shit.
It's all a matter of taste though.
And anyways, this is an AAL thread. If we wanna discuss Deathcore, we should make a thread for it.

EDIT: okay, most of that song is shit but I really like the opening groove.

I have listened to some Animals As Leaders, but I don't recall what.  I downloaded some and listened to it while I played video games, which made for a pretty intense soundtrack.  I remember a lot of it was pretty nuts, and it was pretty cool, but something I'd have to be in the right mood to listen to in the future.  Maybe I'll check them out a little more.

djent isnt a genre
Title: Re: Animals As Leaders!!! What do you think about them???
Post by: JosephAOI on June 06, 2011, 09:27:46 AM
Djent is an onomatopoeia for a chord consisting of two (or more) octaves of two notes. It comes out really metallic sounding and thus, is not really a 'chug' but 'djent'. Listen to Aztec Two-Step by Meshuggah. That's the djent chord. Djent the 'genre' is just a bunch of idiots who took Misha (from Periphery) a little too seriously.
Title: Re: Animals As Leaders!!! What do you think about them???
Post by: chrisbDTM on June 06, 2011, 09:55:16 AM
exactly, now misha is trying to get as far away from that term as possible haha. but now every band he works with gets the label (animals as leaders, born of osiris, veil of maya)

Which sucks cause most of them are my favorite bands. But yeah, it's always annoying when something like that happens especially when this whole new 'movement' (as deemed by Guitar World) started from a sound.

Just adding to my approval of Born of Osiris. I was obsessed with The New Reign, then I was a little disappointed with A Higher Place, but goddamn have they pulled it back with The Discovery. Every track is fantastic, even the little interlude type things.

Oh yeah, Animals as Leaders! Great band too! They're supporting BTBAM when they come to the UK in September, and I've got tickets to both London shows. I'm genuinely considering booking that week off work to recover from the horrendous hangover and sore neck I will be suffering from.

I would say that BOO are my favourite new band, and definitely my favourite to have come out of this new djent explosion (although I'm not sure they sit entirely comfortably within that sound/genre.) They slay live too, and I'm lucky enough to have seen them twice already this year  :tup

Also, a friend of mine has this ridiculous sub and amp in his car, and The New Reign in second only to Dimmu Borgir in terms of how goddamn heavy and loud it sounds. That bass drum trigger is like a punch in the back!  :metal :metal

There's definitely a BOO thread though so maybe we should leave this topic with AAL, although Tosin Abasi was a temp player with BOO for a while

Tosin and Reyes plus two other dudes playing metal tinged jazz fusion.
Dude, Tosin and Reyes are turning out to be unbelieveable guitarists. They should write music at Buckethead's pace.  ;D

HAHAHAHA thought I posted this already but I guess not.

I ended up going to their concert at the Launchpad here in Albuquerque, its a small place, which is cool because you can pretty much meet the bands. Anyways, I was talking to their Merch lady and asked when Tosin was gonna be by, she then said later on. I said cool, and somehow she ended up making me a bet, as I had no more money, If I jumped off the stage (she asked me what my favorite song was. I replied Wave of Babies) she'd give me a Free Shirt. I said sure, and made sure she was straight on the offer. I saw her at the bar, before Animals went on to make sure she was serious as I was. Waves of Babies started and I jumped on stage, being careful not to fuck up their shit, and leaped for glory....The guy who I think owns the place, took me out and warned me not to do that on his stage, I said no problem, and he let me back in.

I went back in enjoyed the show and after they were done, went to the merch and asked if she saw me, she said yeah, and then proceeded to ask "what type of shirt you want" I took the obvious unique non-black shirt. I then got Tosin's auto, and Dead Letter Circus's auto, which they signed on a poster. I couldn't find the show ad to have Tosin sign it, so I asked him to sign the poster, he laughed and made thought bubbles on 2 of DLC's band members, which was funny as He was writing "Vegemite?" one of them, the same guy yelled VEGEMITE. Got his picture and left the show in awe. My first concert at the Launchpad, and first AAL show...Hope they return.

Deathcore is the worst genre of music on this entire planet. I'd rather listen to boy bands from the 90's than deathcore.

Hey man, Backstreet Boys are pretty damn legit.

So this thread just made me realize I have seen this band live. They were opening for circa survive. The weird thing was I went to see Dredg and ended up becoming a HUGE circa survive fan. Overall, Animals as leaders was impressive technically, but really weren't my cup of tea.

Periphery is the only band that can sucessfully pull off 3 guitarists.
There's plenty of bands that can do this. Iron Maiden comes to mind.
Maiden has 3 guitarists???  ???
Yeah but they still sound like they have 2.

Radiohead have three guitarists but they sound like they have 1.

And it's in the case.

And it's got no strings on.

Yeah you are most likely going to be waiting for sometime for the pre-order to arrive if you order from there. The shipping is usually very expensive too.
If you don't mind it then go for it. If you just want the CD right away, I'd just order it from best buy.

I absolutely adore that soft section starting at 1:15 in Nephele, along with DAT CHURNNIN' ENDING.  :metal :yarr :heart

Other favorites right now are the more mellow and groovy Another Year and Para Mexer. Great album, so many layers.

Definitely should, it's an amazingly diverse album from a band that (in my kingly, superior opinion) sits right in the middle of genre saturated with the same sound. I'm still pretty stunned by how much I love this album.

I second that, PROG, and Physical Education is equally as hypnotic in a completely different way. DEM TONES!

Really? Shit! But they do have a drummer for the live shows, right? Can he play like that?!
[I suppose the debut is all Tosin then... A solo album.]
[/quote]

Yup they have a drummer.
The first album though was more of a "home produced" album by Tosin and Misha Mansoor. Misha programmed the drums.

In the next two albums, Tosin put a band together (a drummer and another guitarist).

Jesus Christ! I just started listening to Weightless. The drumming is insane!!!!!
I'm having drum classes for 2 months now and I'm already thinking about quitting!  ;D How can a human being play like that?!!! So fast and precise! It's Portnoy x 4!! The double bass technique is far from this earth!

AAL is the only band I know where the bass guitar is replaced by the double-bass of the drums.
If you have a kick-ass drummer with a good double-bass technique, a band does not need a bass player!

I'm listening to the last album now, Joy of Motion.
My first impression is that AAL is becoming less jazzy and more commercial. I might be wrong thou...

1. AAL debut - very complex, very jazzy, hard-listening
2. Weightless - not as complex as the debut, less jazzy, less hard-listening
3. Joy of Motion- not as complex as the second, even less jazzy, almost easy-listening

And the drums, on the last album, sound more human to me. I bet they used programmed drums in Weightless as well, mixed up with Navene's performance.

What do you guys think?

Just bought a ticket for the show in Amityville, NY, in a few weeks.  When they came to NYC a month or so ago, there was a terrible snowstorm and I'm sure many people didn't go.  The Amityville venue is much closer to me anyway.  So psyched!

Petrucci was in the crowd.  I noticed him and his wife after the show talking to someone toward the back of the venue.  Would've been awesome if he went on stage.  At one point between songs Tosin said that one of AAL's favorite bands came from Long Island.  Of course, I expected him to say Dream Theater.  He said Glassjaw.

Only have the first AAL album, but, it was amazing. I think I had an orgasm the first time I listened to that album. I think, as far as being technical is concerned, they are better than DT.
However, they don't seem to have the soul and passion that DT have.
Title: Re: The Animals As Leaders Thread!!!
Post by: ThatOneGuy2112 on September 09, 2014, 03:03:58 PM
After giving all their albums a couple of listens, I can't say I'm really into the first two. Yeah, it's technical, and a lot more wacky than most things DT has done, but that's as far as the music goes and it doesn't really become anything more than that.

TJOM, on the other hand, I dig a lot for the fact that it has more soul to it and memorable grooves that don't feel technical just for the sake of being technical.

I agree. I still really only love CAFO from the first couple albums. I still spin 'em every now and again but overall, to me, CAFO just kinda embodies what they did before. TJOM is a completely amazing evolution, and it's got so many layers and is so dynamic and versatile; it's really one of my favorite albums in a long while. I listen to it almost every other day and it still hasn't degraded a bit and I haven't gotten tired of it in the least.

TJOM: less guitar chords and real drums! That's the recipe!

I love this band. Tosin Abasi is an amazingly creative musician with a really distinct style and vision. It's really awsome how this guy can write music that's very technical and twisty but still holds a very strong atmosphere throughout.

I think the first album is still my favorite (I mean, CAFO and On Impulse, you can't get better than that!) but TJOM is a close second. I think it's more song and groove based than the previous records with lots of variation. I remember Tosin himself saying that at this point he doesn't need to prove to anybody that he can play blazingly fast, so now he can focus more on songwriting.

I don't like the new album, and didn't care much for The Joy of Motion. The first two albums are nothing short of brilliant, however, with the first being my favorite. I tried to get into the new album, but it's just boring. For me, I don't think the current approach works on an instrumental level, because there is a lot of riffing in unison, a much more noticeable lack of lead guitar/melody, and as a result it just feels empty. It has an unfinished sort of feel to it. The songs just meander, and don't seem as cohesive as previous efforts. Tosin is a very unique and innovative player, but over the past two albums he has been focusing a lot more on slap guitar and thumping, which is great and all, but it's a bit too much. I don't mind that technique (I do it myself from time to time), but when a riff consists of holding one note and slapping/thumping various rhythmic groupings in odd meters for more than eight bars, it tends to get old. I remember reading an interview where he said he wanted the newer AAL material to focus more on songwriting than on technicality, which is funny, because I find the older technically over-the-top material to be way more musically interesting and memorable.

Man, I think I have the polar opposite opinion of that. Which is cool. I love the new approach and have listened to TJOM and TMOM ten fold more than I have the prior albums. I think the unison actually brings more melody and helps to create memorable moments.

On my own end, I love the hell out of Inner Assassins, most notably the late latter half/ending, that's a really gorgeous handful of seconds. I also really like Ectogenesis and appreciate it for being one of the most (if not the most) heavy songs on the album (which isn't saying a whole lot, granted) while still having a hell of a lot of jazzier moments blended in nicely.

I can't tell if I like Madness or Motion more but I love these two albums a lot.

My list of favourite drummers is so long and vast but honestly at present time Matt is the number one metal drummer in the industry right now. He's so complete in his technic, fluidity and creativity. He's kinda the next Virgil Donati. He lives and breathes his instrument everyday and has been for a long time and that's how you become so proficient at your craft.

I've never been able to get into this band. While I can appreciate their talent and complexity of their music, is just does absolutely nothing for me.

The crazy thing is that a few years ago I saw Javier Reyes (Mestis) opening for Plini, and I enjoyed that show a lot more than anything Animals as Leaders has put out. I tried liking them, I've even seen them twice and it's just not my thing.

I'll give the new album a try, maybe having such low expectation will be a good thing.

He posted this whole live set from a recent gig, watching that it's like seeing someone building a foundation out of concrete, it's rock solid.
