Glass Moon! Awesome choice. It's a bit unexpected, yet is not a first timer! UAGM opened most of the DT shows in June-December 95.
Anyway, they chose a very challanging song for James, as a matter of fact which it had not been played since the Octavarium Tour!

Awesome Endless Sacrifice. I would love to see it live myself. It's the first song that got me into DT. I'd "come full circle" then.
DT are doing a good few songs that haven't been played for a while! Hopefully Trial of Tears and Hell's Kitchen are played at some point too.

UAGM is interesting as an opener, but Peruvian Skies as a closer is the weirdest. And, perhaps, pretty convincing as a stroke of genius. The build-and-release... I'd've never thought to end with it, but that's damn cool. Crescendos nicely. Forsaken and Endless Sacrifice I've heard plenty enough of on the past three tours (four for ES), but 5/7 ain't bad.
And I forgot to mention These Walls! Not been played since OVM tour, and they didn't play it much on that. Ace song. Brilliant!

So far one song from each album except Awake, Scenes and BC&SL. And I'm willing to bet they play "On The Backs Of Angels" second to last. Ditto. I hope, that if they do a song from BC&SL that it isn't "A Nightmare To Remember" or "A Rite Of Passage"... I'd much prefer "The Count Of Tuscany", but if their set list is 90-100 minutes at most, that'd be cutting it close as they're about to 60-65 minutes so far, and with at least an Awake and Scenes songs left (assuming they do CIAW and TSCO, bringing the total up to 75 minutes), they may not have enough time for TCOT.

Saw it on BCSL tour, but aside that - ditto! It's a nice enough song on the album, but live it brings the house down. Very cool.
Endless Sacrifice, on the other hand, this is... I said the fourth tour running, in the other thread, but they'll've played it on the TOT tour (duh!), too, so it's its fifth actually. I've seen them four times, and seen Endless Sacrifice three. Ready for a break.

In fairness, ACoS is about his mother dying, but I do agree with the point. ACoS has 15 years of age behind it, and was the band's song for a good six years before the death of Mike's mother entered the lyrics. The twelve-step-suite, too, is all theirs now.
But it is interesting that his songs haven't appeared yet.

Indeed, and the lyrics to ACOS, while point to MP's personal experiences, are ambiguous enough to fit any number of other ideas, unlike TBOT which has specifics that pertain only to MP.
Also, playing "Caught In A Web" and "Fatal Tragedy" breaks the JP-lyrics run that conquered the set.

Incidentally, with regards to the disappointment of some surrounding TCoT - note that there wasn't a DVD recorded of the last tour, and it's more than likely a song that they're going to want to have documented, so it was a little inevitable it'd be a candidate for this tour's master setlist.
And wrt no MP songs, no songs from any departed lyricists, actually. PMU, for instance, I'd've thought would've been plausible. Glad they haven't brought it up, though. Nor Metropolis.

(Using the IAW 15th Anniversary version on my home-playlist, so it'll be a fairly contemporary live version. We could do with LTL on DVD again, too, at that!)

Hey, it's all relative. CIAW is still a solid enough 7/10 song for me. I just don't find it that exciting, although it's pretty good live.
ES is fairly mediocre, although again it's quite fun live.

Wow, that's awesome. I really really dig this setlist, that's the most Dream Theater-ish setlist I've seen in a while.
All of those songs are great except Forsaken. That one's okay, so no biggie. OTBOA holds up well against a lot of those classic DT tracks.

I don't think that's the point. But even through the mic of the camcorder, you can clearly hear what every member is playing. So it's safe to say they sound good.

It's just not good enough for me, and I've listened to bad DT before. I'll wait until I hear something that isn't so mushy to me. I could hear a little bit on the LtL acoustic section. That didn't sound so bad. As far as the live dvd for this tour, I would have to assume that is a slam dunk. They didn't do one for the last album, the dvd before that was basically thrown together production wise. Score was the last good dvd they made, and that was 06. This seems like the perfect time for a Budokan/Score type dvd/blu-ray. September can't come fast enough!

Do different drum companies sound noticeably different from each other? I know if I heard two guitar tones, I would be able to tell the dif. between a Strat and Les Paul, but it would be totally guessing for me to try tell drums apart.

I'm sure they do based on material, thickness, coating, etc just like a guitar. But realistically nowadays anything can sound like anything with the technology out there. For example, remember Tom Sawyer, everyone thought it was Ged's Rickenbacker, but it was a Fender Jazz if I remember correctly. Also look at the sounds Lifeson has gotten using one guitar and it sounding like another.

I find those sorts of things cheesy, and they take away from the flow of the song. Maybe I take my music too seriously, but I don't care for random, ridiculous things like that.

Looks like a pretty darn good set list. Seeing a song from every album is very nice. Seeing Ytse Jam is awesome, and you can never go wrong classics like Learning to Live, Peruvian Skies, Fatal Tragedy and Caught in a Web. I can do without Forsaken, but they like it for whatever reason, and if they had to play something from SC, better that than Constant Motion. These Walls isn't to my liking either, but almost everything else is stellar, so this gets :tup :tup from me.

DT has so many good songs, that they could put the ones they play on playing on a tour in a bowl, pick out a dozen or so randomly, and odds are that it would be a good set list at worst. Despite what I have often said about Portnoy's personality and off the stage persona, I have never been one to dog most of the extra stuff he did for the fans and whatnot, but I always thought the praise for his set list writing was vastly overstated and overrated.

Yeah I agree, the tough moments didn't sound too bad. It's probably since it's their first show in a pretty long time.

For some reason, this is question I most want the answer to.
I don't see any song there that actually needs backing vocals (other than maybe Petrucci filling in for 1 line or two).
None of them need them, it would just be nice to have them.
Lol you get what I mean (I hope you do), none of these songs had significant backing vocals to being with (maybe except TCOT). If they played PoW/ANTR/CM etc I'd be a little worried, but with the songs they played it's just a nice yet minor addition.

Soundboard recordings of DT pretty much never happen anymore, but I have a feeling someone made a boot. I mean, how could it have not happened? Some of the audience stuff is fortunately pretty solid.

Petrucci probably was fed up with CM and PA. If it wasn't for Rock Band, those two probably wouldn't have played as much. As a video suggested, MP plays Rock Band, so he's in touch with that side.

Yeah, Austria isn't very lucky when it comes to that. :lol Four years ago, they played in Linz, and I think they totally skipped the country for the BCASL tour. But since they tend to play in Munich quite often, everything's not lost for me. :biggrin:

Same here. On some songs (forsaken) he does great, but I can definitely tell he is struggling in some parts of LTL and UAGM... Consider that it was the first gig in almost a year, the first is always a tough call for singers (and nowadays James is no exception)...

Very impressive and enjoyable to watch. But would've be much nicer if he interacted more with the fans. I kinda lol'ed when just as the audience started getting into it and clapping with him hitting the cymbals, he started doing those fast snare hits, and everyone just stopped.

Glad you all enjoyed the updates cyberdrummer provided via myself at the show.
We had a cracking time, setlist was very surprising.
Re the backing vocal question that came up a number of times, I didn't see cyberdrummer asking me return questions about it until after the show. I really only noticed JP doing any vox but, as I said, the harmony line in Tuscany seemed to be missing, eg "I... wanna stay alive" etc, the high was there but the low wasn't. If I remember correctly, they played it that way on the Prog Nation tour but you could clearly hear MP. Could just be that JP was mixed low, of course.
James sounded pretty good throughout the show. Certainly we made less faces about his performance than we did Geddy Lee's when we saw Rush a month ago!
Finally, the second track was definitely These Walls, not The Answer Lies Within (which, as a counterpoint to the opinions earlier in the thread, I would actually have preferred!).
Anyway, there goes my 14th show. Shame the 15th can't be on the upcoming UK tour ;D

Hmm. Looks like JLB is growing his hair out again, as it's now pretty much to his shoulders. Unfortunately, I thought he sounded fairly bad, and that was a pretty weak F#. Was really hoping he'd have some sort of return, as I always do with a new tour. I'd say he needs a bit of reverb/delay, I don't know why they never ever put any effects on him, he'd sound so much better.
Otherwise, it sounds amazing, and Mangini destroys. His drum sound is killer with that nice vibrato.

MM really played the actual tempo of the CD songs by the sound of it. Often MP used to speed things up quite a bit....probably for fun. It's quite refreshing to hear/see the songs at their actual tempo. JLB missed a little but heck, it's the first show.
MM's playing is amazing, there's no way you would think this was his first show. Infact you probably think it's 500th show but the sound of it.

From what I've seen in the videos, JM isn't as static anymore as he used to be. He seemed fully immersed in the music, and moving along to it. Awesome. Also, his live sound doesn't seem to be as distorted as it was on the previous tour. I like that.

oh my goodness oh my goodness what a setlist :omg:. Of the songs I have yet to hear live, outside of A Change of Seasons the ones I most want are Learning to Live and The Great Debate. Please please JP bring these to the States . . . seriously, that's the best setlist since the 6DOIT tour. Also refreshing not to have PMU or Metropolis for once.

Just watching the footage now. Mangini is inhuman. I knew he was phenomenal but the drum solo blew me away. Learning to Live is awesome too. The F# is raw and vibrant, shame its quite short but I can't complain.
Dream Theater look tight, together and back on form.

Because it's much easier to belt out a note on its own rather than sing it 'in phrase'. JLB's range is still there he just seems to struggle more with the sustained, sung high notes - such as the 'pensive fear' verse in TTT and verses in Surrounded.

I am the greatest fan of James's high notes, but I think that that little change, together with the fading lights, created something magic.

I would of shat myself and smeared it on the walls if they had transitioned into the ending part of ACOS like they do in 5 Years IAL. One of my favorite segues they ever put together.

Gotta disagree. Frankenstain's monster was made with limbs taken from the fairest of men, yet the outcome was dreadful. With this, I do not mean to say that the transition LTL > Crimson Sunset transition is dreadful, but that each ending belongs to its own song, and does not work the same way in a different context, and that medleys are ultimately destined to fail, compared to the original songs. :)

Honestly that was a HARD setlist for a singer and it's just their first show in this tour, I bet he'll get much better.

I absolutely love that James hits the F#. I'm not sure how often he's been able to do it since his vocal accident, but I'm just used to the Live Scenes version, which, while nice, doesn't have the same impact on me that the original does. To hear a new F# is... well, almost a little bit like magic!

Ever since 2004, every single time they played the complete song he hit it IIRC. However, they didn't play the complete song since 2007 (not including 2007. There were a few times where they did perform it that year).

I think he sounds fine in this, and wonderful in UAGM. It's the first show, he hasn't done anything like this live in a while, I'm sure things will get much better.

I don't mean to start anything, but I feel the same way. I love MP (duh), but I can't believe how good of a match MM is for DT. I think he's more technical than MP (please don't shoot me) and I think personality-wise matches the other guys better. MP was more the bad-ass style rockstar, but think of JP, JM and JR, how different they are. MP was like F this and F that in every other sentence in interviews and the other guys don't even have a tattoo...
I am mega-psyched about this new chapter in DT history.

Least they could do is give him a bit of reverb to cover it up a bit, then it would probably sound decent, but it just sounds incredibly out of place in the song now. Someone from the audience might as well have just gone "waaaaa" over the music.
Although, when he comes back with "the way your heart sounds, etc", that actually sounds really good.

I've noticed that too since the ToT era. The other guys remind me of prog musicians like the guys from Yes or Rush, fairly calm and intellectual. Not that MP isn't a smart guy - he is. But he definitely had more of that party-animal/rockstar vibe going than the other guys. If the new single is any indication, it seems he was pushing for a more "metal" DT as well, while DT's strength has always lain in the diversity of how they mix the two elements. I would bet money that ADTOE will sound way more like I&W and FII than ToT and SC.

I agree. Although I will say that John Petrucci is doing fine when you can hear him. I feel like he is turned down too low. I think they should get a vocal harmonizer so James could harmonize the melody and the upper harmony, then JP could just do the low harmonies. Ideally, Jordan would sing though.

As someone has already said, I think those MM traits fit the band better than MP's rock show style. People don't go to a Dream Theater concert to see one hell of a show (in terms of production, crowd participation, etc.), in first place :D

Hope this is just a thing with it being an off night/first show/last song of the set thing for james. This is the worst I've heard him sing lately. Doesn't help that he is waaaay too high in the mix compared to the rest of the band and I can't hear any reverb blending him in.

Indeed. It is fantastic to hear the F#, but in the recording I saw, the notes leading up to it seemed just a bit off. For me, it's not the F# alone that does it for me - I know my last post made it seem like it is - it's the entire build-up that helps it be a wonderful part of the song. Regardless, the new Rome performance still did it for me overall.

He was definately sharp in that section however Wait for sleep reprise redeemed the entire vocals. Jordan was especially good.

I still cannot get behind the drum solo. Mangini is a good player and all, but outside of Peart, I have never enjoyed a concert drum solo. I don't even like my own drum solos... They take away time that the band could be playing another song.

What I found I couldn't understand was MM placing the Toms up so high above his head. I thought, how can anyone roll from there to the lower kit toms. After seeing Mangini, he just uses the one hand to roll up high. The man is amazing.
That being said when he uses both hands rolling across the high toms, he's just plain quick enough to transition lower without loosing any space. Wow.
Not only does he play MP's parts with great precision, he plays them with similar feeling to MP...a true sign of a professional musician.
AS for JLBs vocals - it's the first flaming show! Remember his vocals have crazy ranges....must need a few nights to get the vocal chords stretched and ready.

James has always been James, good shows and bad ones. I still cringe when I watch OIALT, some of those vocals, gawd! But he always comes back,it is what it is and I have no problem with his vocals.

I think MM totally owned it, he is on top of his game, as one would expect. I would go as far as to say that I think he is better than MP. I love MP (duh), but I think MM is simply a better fit for DT. He is more technical, more of a musician, like JR, JP and JM and less of a bad-ass "rockstar", like MP. If you think about it, the other guys don't even have a tattoo for crying out loud... I'm definitely not going to miss MP's spitting on the stage (yuck), his dropping the f-bomb in every other sentence in each interview and so forth.

Really? His voice at times is not very good. I would have to go back and watch it to give you examples. It's like he's strainign and can't hit notes.
what's bad in OIALT? i've listened to that a million times and never noticed many mistakes.
Oh you said oialt which is the double cd I was referring to but I don't remember much from the video as far as mistakes. But I'm sure it's possible.

I love this solo. It's the little things like the one handed snare rolls...switching back and forth between the right and left hands. He's a serious musician who excels at his craft. I'm sure the other guys are very excited to be playing with him and vise versa.

I understand that this discussion mainly is about JLB's performance.. And i agree with that he's not as great as he was. But I think it's a little weird that he seems to struggle with the notes that are slightly higher than the average key, like the notes leading up to the F# in LTL. But when he comes to the F#, he seems to hit it very well. Another example is Under A Glass Moon, where he seemed to have some trouble until he got to "Praying for TIME to disappear.." Where he was completely up there.
Well, I'm no vocals expert nor a singer, but i think that's a little weird. Am I the only one who noticed this?

That's what he has done in the whole 2009-2010 tour. He kept it quite low, had many big pauses between one leg and another and as a result almost achieved perfect shape in the last two legs.
As far as I know him, I am quite convinced that this tour will be quite a good tour for him, despite the dubious performance at Rome.

I was reading MP-forum, but I'll write here because my account there was denied and not activated for some reason.
After seeing videos from 1st and 2nd gig it feels absurd to see some posts, where people think that the playing (MM and DT) misses something. Honestly, those are the first gigs with this lineup ever, of course it's a bit safely performed and still might have some fouls. It's basically useless to compare MM to MP, because MP had always played on DT and knows the songs better than anyone. It's like taking Haake off from Meshuggah and MP would take the seat. I'm sure the gig would not go 100% smoothly. When a certain level of complexity is reached on music, people just can't step in and make everything 100% right on the first rounds, no matter how talented they are. I though MM did awesome job, I can only wait when they've made 100 shows with this line-up!
Overall, without the change of drummer, I'd have most like skipped the next DT album and certainly would not go to see them live anymore. There's something new now and at least for me, this change of lineup was the only one that makes a difference (interest-wise) for me. I don't miss the show-elements of MP, I kind of hope the added live-parts (all funny themes within other songs) would stay away now, I have no interest to long jamming, basically I prefer the material to be played as recorded and at least now they've done so. For me this feels like a band of talented prog musicians again, if I want to see or listen a band of rough guys, DT has never been that, no matter how many tattoos are on the skin or how many celebrities they hang with. In a way, I feel that most of the biggest complainers are a bit newer fans, who were introduced by the albums from the 2000 - and MP's face on the cover of magazines. Some earlier fans remember the band as a group of a bit quiet prog guys, making great prog music, without the hardest modern metal edge on it and are now happy, when that side is coming back, at least in some ways. Maybe I'm wrong...

in my opinion since live at budokan he was in all the sconcerts i seen (about six) and all the live cds/dvds excellent.

I really like this version of Learning to Live. Instead of ending with the part before the Wait for Sleep reprise, thus coming sort of mini full circle, they prolong the outro, play a unison part and then end the song with a calm drum ending. It helps to preserve the majestic outro feeling (with the crowd).

Well, it would have been extremely hard to blend the group picture with the background, and besides, the whole composition would have suffered greatly. You know, in the previous artwork, the shape of the colosseum directly shifts and pushes the viewer's attention toward the image above. Furthermore, if you draw a line to join all the heads of the band members, you'll have the same shape of the upper edge of the building. So, that's definitely a strong composition. To try the same thing with a different foreground image, with different shapes, would have compromised the whole result, in my opinion.
And I could not include each member's single portrait, either, since most of them have the upper part of their head cropped away. -.-
So, I went with Mangini (the only one with Myung to have a full-head picture) alone, which is not completely nonsense, since the show was very much HIS special show.
Anyway, I like both artwork, but my preference leans towards the first. I like hot color a bit more, and definitely love the blurred lights/lines (which might allude to the "Blurring lines drawn in between what is right and what is wrong").

I totally agree with this, it seems that you're niw what You are talking about. I have no idea about photoshopping and any of that kind of stuff :P And of course it was special night for Mangini, no doubt ;)

However, as I said somewhere (well, maybe I haven't), I just made a DVD of the Verona show. Today I'll start a graphic contest here: the best proposed artwork will be the official one!
