I'm posting from my phone cuz my compy done broke. :(
-
must... not... troll...
-
I'm not an expert but I might be able to help. What happened?
-
Last night I turned my computer off for the first time in a few days (I usually put it into hibernation). This morning I tried to turn it on again, and the first time the first screen with the Mac symbol and spinning wheel seemed to take forever so I force shut down and tried again. This time it got past that to the login screen and when I tried to click my name I couldn't; I thought it was a crash but I could still move my mouse. Now I'm stuck at the blue screen just before login.
-
I got the Mac symbol freeze thing today too! Restarting it worked though so I dunno...
-
If it's a laptop, try taking the battery out and putting it back in again.
THE MAGICAL POWER OF SEARCH ENGINES ALSO BROUGHT UP THIS:
"on startup hold Option-Apple-P-R after you hear the bell sound"
-
1. It's a pro so I can't access the battery.
2. What's the Apple P-R button?
-
I DON'T KNOW.
Serious question here but have you tried just holding down the power button until it goes off and then switching it back on again?
-
That's what the aforementioned forced shut down is.
-
Bring it to an Apple store and have them run a diagnostic.
-
Whew! After 20 minutes of waiting, got onto my computer. I've just uninstalled StarCrafts 1 + 2, all my Steam games, a video player app called Silverlight, and Google Earth, as those are my most recently installed apps and so the prime suspects. I think I'll go either today or tomorrow to the Apple Store, my only qualm being that the only means of transportation to the distant Burlington Mall is a $30+ cab ride ($30+ each way :-\).
-
Does a Mac have something similar to the system restore that Windows has?
-
I think so. Isn't it called time machine or something?
-
2. What's the Apple P-R button?
The one where you blindside your user base with misinformation :neverusethis:
But seriously what he meant was hold down the Option, Apple, P and R buttons all at once.

It worked! Thanks Harry and orcus! :tup
-
Awesome. No problem.
-
Doing that resets the pram. here is some info on what pram does..
https://support.apple.com/kb/ht1242
if you have any questions about macs in the future i would be glad to help. you can always pm if you want to. Been using and working on macs for a decade now.
-
What tjanuranus means is that Macs are powered by harvesting the energy from children (like in The Matrix) and resetting the pram, just just replaces the baby that the Mac is taking its power from.
Can't expect a single baby to power a laptop forever, can you?
-
Okay, here is a mac question:
On my old PC, I was able to use a program called Goldwave that was online and free, and it enabled me to break up and edit songs (like, if I wanted to edit a 30-minute song down into five different tracks for the purposes of making it easier to skip to parts of the song if on a short drive or something). Is there a similar program for macs that is easy to use and free?
-
Don't know about any built in software but Audacity does that and it works on Macs:
https://audacity.sourceforge.net/download/
It is free.
-
I tried Audicity before. It doesn't appear to support mp3s and tries to save everything as a project under the .aup format. I am thinking I am not doing something right here. :lol
-
It does support exporting of MP3s. You just have to download the codec (instructions below)
https://audacity.sourceforge.net/help/faq?i=lame-mp3&s=install
-
garageband can do that. And it comes with the computer usually.
-
Have you tried turning it on? I'm pretty sure they're just supposed to work.

I almost read that as garbageband. :lol

*budum chick*
And shouldn't the thread say "any mac geniuses in the house?" hhahaha the thought that mac tech people are called mac geniuses is too hysterical given their old ad campaign that featured idiots using the products.

I take offense to this! =)

:rollin
:rollin
-
Yes, I do love the irony in that statement :lol
-
Yes, I do love the irony in that statement :lol
because there is no battery. It's a desktop. well there is a small battery for keeping time but that's not what was being referred to. And that can be changed easily. If it's a macbook pro then obviously it's super easy to change the battery.
-
Ah, I just assumed he had a laptop. Never mind.

:rollin I've only had one experience with a Mac Genius and he had no idea what the problem was with my sister's MacBook and couldn't even fix/reset it, so she had to get a new one, but because her one (which she'd only had for 3 months) was "obsolete", she had to pay extra to get the latest model.
So yeah, I don't have much faith in the word Genius in that context. :P

I love how non-mac users get such huge superiority complexes around mac users :P
-
Geniuses don't use Macs.
That's why I don't use them

I actually use macs all the time. The pro towers are nice. It's when we start getting into consumer stuff where I feel apple starts to fall apart. Although they are still way too overpriced. I probably won't ever buy a mac unless I start a business of my own editing.

There are a lot of brilliant people who use macs that would disagree with you but ok...
-
Ah, I just assumed he had a laptop. Never mind.
It is a laptop. I still can't access the battery.
-
tjanuranus, you lied to me.
I am very upset.

no i didn't a macbook pro battery is probably the easiet battery to remove.
-
You told me it was a desktop.
I'm going to cry now.
P.S. I'm just winding you up and I believe you about removing the battery. Super Dude is probably just being a complete Super N00b :P

unless his mbpro is different than mine.. there is a switch you press on and it pops the battery compartment open. No screws or anything.
And yeah i know it's all in fun!
-
I just looked for one on mine, and I can't find it.

Well mine doesn't have it. My regular Macbook did, but not this one.
-
Ok when did you buy it? Need the model because if it doesn't have a switch it's a different model. I can help you If I know that info.

What's so funny about that?

irony?

It's actually a hand-me-down from my dad so I'm not sure, but probably either 2008 or 2009.
-
Get a Zune.
I mean...
-
It's funny because Apple is selling people laptops with batteries that aren't user replaceable. Heaven forbid somebody might want to install an aftermarket battery for 1/3 the price. Gotta take it to them and pay $129-$179.
The more I hear about Apple, the more benevolent M$ is starting to look.
Oh, and the irony. :lol

i have the late 2008 model which has the switch. Yours must be this one...

That video shows you how to replace it. I have to say I can't believe they are making it more difficult to switch. Apple batteries have ALWAYS been easy to replace. It looks like they want you to go in for replacement. Good thing is the replacement is free. Bad thing is you have to by the apple one which is expensive. I would just buy a third party one and watch that video if you need to replace the battery. So far i'm on 2 and a half years with no replacement needed yet. I wonder how far it will get....
-
Luckily I have a package (unopened) for a Macbook battery replacement with receipt, so I'll just hand that in to 'em. And if that doesn't work, I got an unused $50 gift card for the Apple Store.

I'm not surprised at all (and that's not a dig specifically at Apple). Proprietary batteries are a massive profit maker. I'm actually surprised they're not soldering them in place (yet). I'd certainly replace it myself, but there are tons of people who won't want to void their warranty (bullshit) and won't want to bother with a proprietary tool for the tamper screws.

I was saying that because i've been using apple computers for over a decade now and never came across this. Must be a new thing.

It's not really that. I just can't for the life of me figure out why more people don't just Google a computer problem first before posting about it.
-
I mean a computer crashing is a very general symptom, and I tried Googling it and I got many issues that were related but not the same thing.
-

Too much spyware and viruses out there, so you never know if a link that looks legit will mess your computer up. If you can the same practical advice from your fellow forumers, I don't see the problem. :)
-

The thing I came up with (resetting the PRAM) was the first result on Google for "Mac getting stuck at login screen" :lol

Yeah, that's my reasoning as well.

Oh, I searched "Mac crashing." Derp.

The non-user-replaceable battery thing started with the unibody versions.
-
Gotcha. Sill replaceable but not as easy I guess.
-
@ Ruben: It's a MacBOOK Pro.
-
Gotcha. Sill replaceable but not as easy I guess.
The problem isn't so much the lack of ease in doing it. It's the fact that doing it would void any warranty you have.
-
@ Ruben: It's a MacBOOK Pro.
Oh. I thought you just said pro, whatever. I didn't know you couldn't access the battery on these (I have one as well).
-
I think mine is a newer model or something. Those Apple bastards.
-
Mine is from september last year. I just don't know because I haven't tried yet. :)

The non-user-replaceable battery thing started with the unibody versions.
At the MacWorld Expo keynote on January 6, 2009, Phil Schiller announced a 17-inch MacBook Pro with unibody construction. This version diverged from its 15-inch sibling with an anti-glare "matte" screen option and a non user-removable lithium polymer battery.[36] Apple affirmed the battery's design was unlike any existing notebook battery. Instead of traditional round cells inside the casing, the lithium-ion polymer batteries are shaped and fitted into each laptop without wasting space. Adaptive charging extends battery life, which uses a chip to optimize the charge flow to reduce wear and tear.[36] Compared to the previous iteration, battery life for the 17" version is quoted at eight hours, with 80 percent of this charge remaining after 1,000 charges cycles. This battery is not intended to be user-removable; doing so voids the warranty.[36]
