Title: Song Roulette: Welcome to Jamesman Round 8 results, and the 2 finalists are...
Post by: Jamesman42 on May 03, 2011, 10:34:48 AM
WHAT UP

Well, here we are!

So, let's break down the rules.

Types of Rounds

1. Open
2. Instrumental
3. Ambient (meaning contains that element, doesn't have to be fully ambient)
4. Aggressive (take that as you will, +1 point for it not being metal but aggressive)
5. Sad/Melacholy
6. Focus on Lyrics (note: music that enhances the feel of the lyrics will help here)
7. 3 Minutes or Less
8. Open (I may drop this round if we are running for too long)

There will be a final round between the top 2, but I will get into that at the end.

Song Format - For when you send me the song...remember to link me to something!

Band:
Song Name:
Date: (make a rough estimation if you don't know)
Album:
Genre: (List up to 3)
Song Description/Why You Chose the Song:

Time to submit: 3-4 days tops when a new round opens. If you know you will be away for a while, send me songs in advance. I am listing the rounds ahead of time to give you all time to think about choices.

Scoring (hopefully this spread will make it a close game for everyone but leave some definite winners as well):

Top: 8 points
Second Place: 7 points
Next 3: 6 points
Next 3: 5 points
Last 2: 4 points

My last.fm, which may not fully represent my tastes and what I have heard: https://www.last.fm/user/TheJamesman

A band may be used more than once if the song is found on a different album, but not if the band got 3-4 points in any previous round...but try not to resort to that.

Let me know if I missed anything or if there are any questions.

ROUND 1 - OPEN ROUND

Send me something and give me a good impression! I want to do write-ups on Friday the latest. I have plenty of free time so there should be no delays lest my computer crashes.

Players:

Quadrochosis
dtismajestyRavenheart
ariich
Space Invader
Brother H
contest_sanity
kari
Zantera
Marvellous G

I'm in, setting up mine and then I'll pick a song for you.

BTW Jamesman... A few weeks ago there was this "week van eigen kweek" (week of own culture) on a major Belgian radiostation, meaning only Belgian music for the whole week. I really enjoyed that and so I was thinking maybe I could do the same with your roulette - only send you Belgian music. It will be quite a challenge but I'm up for it if it's cool for you, but bear in mind that it could affect the quality of the music I send you, as I'm sure I have "better" stuff to send you. Your call!

So are all bands/artists in your last.fm out of bounds? Or only those above a certain number of plays?

Good question. If it has low plays, take a chance. I may turn it down at my own discretion, depending on whatever factors!

For example, I have heard PT before but I don't really remember anything besides Blackest Eyes. So I wouldn't reject a PT song.

So who is in this?
YtseBitsySpider, kári, ariich, Quadrochosis, Space Invader, dtismajesty, Zantera, Marvellous G, contest_sanity, Ħ

As long as you have songs that meet all the criteria under song themes in my OP...you may be better off just using your whole music collection, IMO. All up to you!

Updated OP to include the participants and also added the "Band:" label for submissions, though it looked like everyone that has submitted so far put the band name in there. :tup

Also, someone had asked me about the use of vulgar lyrics and lyrics that are "anti-Christian." Here was my response:

I really respect you for asking, and I forgot to talk about this in the thread.

If by vulgar language you mean cursing....I am fine with that! Not against the "spice" of the language.

But to the latter point, I would rather not get music with lyrics that I would take issues with...mainly anti-God sentiments. I mean, take SFAM. Reincarnation isn't Christian at all...but I will listen to it sometimes anyway. It's part of the story. But to have a song that puts down one of the main tenets of my beliefs...yeah, I would probably rate it down.

It's not me being close-minded...just careful with what I "feed my soul." Music is powerful and influential. Hope that all made sense, and hope I don't come across as a close-minded person for taking that stand.

Just keep that in mind!

First off, awesome picks for the open round! I mean...there was some seriously quality music sent to me. It was hard to rank these, and I'm glad I am giving points in groups rather than a literal ranking. And thank you all for following the format when sending them, it'll help me later on when I want to find the full albums to listen to them.

So, here are the rankings!

Top pick: Quadrochosis
Song Name: The Frame
Band: Oceansize

OK, I see why everyone is promoting this band. This song has elements I love. It just goes on and on in a good way...it explores and takes you on a trip. And such tight musicianship. Want more. This seriously impressed me. Knowing that some of the other players love this band, I don't think they'll necessarily disagree with my top choice.

Second Place: Space Invader
Song Name: The Twyncyn/The Trembling Willows
Band: Pure Reason Revolution

Very nice stuff here! It helps that I love progressive music. The groove this song has is incredible. The vocals were really awesome as well, so melodic and perfectly executed. The lyrics were very weird, what's up with that? :lol But I'm not knocking the lyrics, I just didn't get them...they seemed to be telling a specific story.

Next 3:

contest_sanity
Song Name: Laying The Demon To Rest
Band: Theocracy

:metal I have their Christmas song that you sent me a while ago, and this song is another reason why I need to get Mirror of Souls. You definitely played to one of my favorite genres: metal.

Ravenheart
Song Name: Prologue: Across the Sky
Band: Emilie Autumn

Man. Her voice. HER VOICE! This song is hauntingly beautiful. I loved the instrumentation as well, it was so well suited...it was like, whoever helped compose this song, had all the elements in mind, music, lyrics, vocals, everything. Is the whole CD like this?

Zantera
Song Name: White Horses At Sea/Utopian Daydream
Band: Amplifier

I really liked this song...so many cool elements. The lyrics were very good as well. The very end was funny but didn't take away from the song haha. I love the space rock feel this song has...is the whole album on that level? Very great pick!

Next 3:

ariichlol
Song Name: He Said He Had a Story
Band: The Dear Hunter

My only pick where I wish I could put it with the above group, but alas, I had to put one of the songs here. This song packs some awesome energy! And his vocals toward the end are awesome, very passionate. Really want to see how this whole story unfolds in the album. The vibe this song gives is very...I don't know...just very fun but serious. Really liked it musically.

YtseBitsySpider
Song Name: Wiseman
Band: Seventh Wonder

I found it fitting that the album art has a spider on it. :lol I'm not a big fan of power metal, but this had enough progressive elements to keep me in check, and the lyrics were really good. A step above a lot of the other stuff I have heard in that vein, so very nice pick!

kari
Song Name: Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa
Band: Vampire Weekend

The first thing that stood out to me was how fun this song was. Also, as a bassist, I loved the bass work in this song! Very nice pick. You could tell this is a fun song for them to play, and it is fun to listen to.

Last 2:

Marvellous G
Song Name: Good Intentions Paving Company
Band: Joanna Newsom

This was a very cool tune. I really liked the vocals. They were different, but very good. The music was very nice! And the outro was very fun musically. Lyrics were very well-written and executed. I only ranked it lower because the other songs people sent are more of my style, but your gamble was worth it.

Brother H
Song Name: Go
Band: Hanson

I must admit, I lol'd when I saw it was Hanson (I grew up when they were a teeny-bop sensation). This song was alright, definitely more mature than their kiddo days. If I was listening to the radio and this song came on, I would enjoy it enough. I don't see myself going out of my way to listen to it again, though.

Ranking:

Quadrochosis - 8
Space Invader - 7
contest_sanity - 6
Ravenheart - 6
Zantera - 6
Ariich - 5
YtseBitsySpider - 5
Kari - 5
Marvellous G - 4
Brother H - 4

ROUND 2 - One thing that made me a huge music fan was Dream Theater's use of instrumentals. Metropolis Pt. 1 still remains my favorite DT song and that is probably halfway due to the instrumental in the middle. So, send me something with no lyrics! I like metal, rock, jazz, electronic, chiptune, prog, ambient (though I would save ambient for the next round), whatever. I am not very picky. GOGOGOGO

The rest of the album is pretty different I'd say, it has the same 'feel', but many of the songs have heavier guitars, though the general theme for the album is pretty dark.
You should check it out though.  :tup

The album is varied in style, but that same sort of ethereal, dreamy atmosphere is present in all of the songs.

Yeah, I liked the song, just, you know...the other guys more hit my tastes and that was the way it happened...and yeah, I simulated the scoring on paper to see how it would work out, and it seems very even but not too even to where there won't be a winner.

Post by: Jamesman42 on May 09, 2011, 10:00:39 AM
Great picks this round! Another round that was a bit tough to rank. I listened to each song 3 times, and each writeup was written down on the third listen. I then ranked them from the most memorable to the least, but it was tough (as I will note), so here it is:

Top Pick: kari
Band: Mono
Song Name: Moonlight

This was simply beautiful post-rock. I don't know a lot of post-rock, but this was evidence that I really like the genre! One big crescendo, like you said, and when it got heavier near the end, I was just like "WHAT?!" Also, for a bit over 13 minutes, it did not overstay its welcome. Time flew by very fast with this song.

Second Place: Marvellous G
Band: Metallica
Song Name: Suicide and Redemption

I already know Metallica (mainly The Black Album and St. Anger...I know, I know), but I counted this one because I didn't know the album. This was better than ANYTHING off of St. Anger. It has a very awesome energy. The riffs here show that the guys still have the ability to write some awesome riffs. I take it Death Magnetic absolutely slays St. Anger? lol

Next Three:

Brother H
Band: Kaki King
Song Name: Can Anybody Who Has Heard This Music Really Be A Bad Person?

First off, it was funny, I had this playing on a higher volume because it was minimal to start...but somehow it just naturally breezed into this large sounding ending and I had to run to my computer to turn it down (neighbors downstairs lol). I really liked this, it was very dreamy and kept me interested. I'll check the album out after the roulette.

---

AriichLOL
Band: God is an Astronaut
Song Name: Echoes

Like you said, this song packs some awesome energy. This is another album that I would like to get to know if it has some other quality material like this! Very good pick.

---

Zantera
Band: Codes In the Clouds
Song Name: Where Dirt Meets Water

I really liked this song. It carried me on some cool rides and took some turns that weren't unexpected but flowed very nicely. Do want more.

Next 3 (Guys, all 3 of these were really hard to put in this category...all really great picks, so don't be discouraged):

Ravenheart
Band: Death
Song Name: Voice of the Soul

Such emotional guitars. I liked how the acoustic guitars and the heavy/melodic guitars blended together...it wasn't awkward, it was great! This was a very good piece of music. Do they do only instrumental music?

---

Space Invader
Band: Exivious
Song: Time and Its Changes

First off, the bass is so crystal clear, and the basslines are very good, so that was really great. I lost a little interest in it near the end, but it is still a great tune!

---

YtseBitsySpider
Band: Ozric Tentacles
Song Name: Magick Valley

I think this is easily the most unique track sent this round. It has a very cool futuristic sound to it, and doesn't lose its steam. Definitely not for the casual music listener, but it is very interesting music. What album/year is this from? You didn't put it in the format I was hoping for.

Last 2:

Quadrochosis
Band: The Flower Kings
Song Name: "Don of the Universe"

This was a very relaxing song indeed. I liked the musicianship. I see this as more of background music to studying, though (probably because there have been quite a few times where I would play some easy-going jazz during homework). This song didn't hit me as hard as the others, unfortunately. What is their other material like? I know quite a few people here love them, so would this album be a good place to start?

contest_sanity
Band: Jean-Luc Ponty
Song Name: New Country

You know, I liked this. I did...but it didn't really do much for me beyond that. Sorry mang. Great musicianship, though!

----------------------------------------------

Standings:
Kari - 5+8=13
Space Invader - 7+5=12
Quadrochosis - 8+4=12
Zantera - 6+6=12
Ravenheart - 6+5=11
Ariich - 5+6=11
Marvellous G - 4+7=11
contest_sanity - 6+4=10
YtseBitsySpider - 5+5=10
Brother H - 4+6=10

ROUND THREE: Ambient time! Make it count, and make it interesting. Ambient can be taken in different ways, so as long as you can justify the place of ambiance in the song, it's good. It can be dark, it can feel uplifting. Vocals or none. This is still anyone's game. GO!

I didn't like how low a scale from 0-4 felt. It just feels better to use these numbers for some reason. I can see why it seems weird.

Cool to see that you enjoyed Codes in the Clouds!
I thought about sending another post-rock song by another band, but I decided to go with this song because the band is fairly new and not so 'big' yet, and when I think about it, I'm probably the only fan on the forum. (might be wrong though)
Title: Re: Song Roulette: Welcome to Jamesman (Round 2 Results)

ya...I punished myself by not sending the info in the right format.
I figured if it lead to me being scored lower, I would learn a lesson from it rather than send you a second PM  again like I did the first round.

I love Ozric, I have 20+ of their albums, and I may send you another for the ambient round...or move on to another special...

Magik Valley is the first track off the YUM YUM TREE (2009) It's got a very Transformers sounding intro which is pretty cool. It's probably a 7/10 as one of their tracks.

20+ albums!?! Wow! Are they all the same genre or is there an evolution to their sound? You're good to send another Ozric song from a different album. And, to let anyone know, I didn't mark Ytse down on not providing the proper format (Contest didn't either, AHEM j/k man). I WOULD like that info how I set it up so I can come back to everyone's selection with the information already there...

Haha, maybe it was just that choice. Like I said, it wasn't bad. It just didn't grab me. But hey, I love me some prog metal, and I know there are some bands like Shadow Gallery or Haken (I think) or Symphony X that I don't know.

Ozric's 20+ are all more or less the same sounding, they occassionaly throw a regae riff in there, but it's very synthy and fantastic instruments...weird sounds..flutes n shit.

They pull it off remarkably well on the live albums too.

This round was fantastic. It's hard not to impress me with ambient songs. Alas, I had to rank them, and it was tough to choose the ranks for most of the songs. You guys know some awesome music! Results:

Top Pick: Space Invader
Band: Anathema
Song Name: Thin Air

Gorgeous. That was my first thought after hearing the song. Very strong vocal melodies. It has such an energy about it that is addicting....it's almost an indescribable song, and I mean that in a good way. I want more of this, it is so emotional and beautiful.

Second Place: kari
Band: Eluvium
Song Name: Prelude for Time Feelers

This was so beautiful. I actually played it 2 more times after the first listen because the beautiful piano was just so moving. What else can I say, I loved it.

Next Three:

-Marvellous G
Band: Brian Eno
Song Name: Always Returning I

My friend had always raved about how much he liked Brian Eno, so I'm glad I am getting a submission for this. This song is so soothing, one of those gems that I can see myself putting on repeat for hours and never growing tired of. Just so soothing, how can you feel down with this song? It's impossible. I think he has a lot of music under his belt, am I correct?

-BrotherH
Band: Bass Communion
Song Name: Construct IV

For its length, this was a great track. It flowed very nicely, and the dark and "low" feel of the song was great. Isn't this one of Steven Wilson's projects? I am not much of a fan of PT or his work, but maybe this will help me start to like him, because in theory, I should. I liked the distorted guitars, they basically made the song, IMO.

-YtseBitsySpider
Band: MAXXESS
Song Name: De-Layed

Really cool stuff going on here in this guitar driven song. The man has a very tasteful tone and the backing music is solid and "makes sense" in relation to it all. Very relaxing and good ambient vibe, and the build-up in the middle was excellent.

Next 3

-Ariich, my lady
Band: Freak Kitchen
Song Name: Breathe

This was a great song. Very emotional, and it fit in its time very well, although I felt like it could have developed a bit more as well. I also liked the timbre of the singer's voice. That said, you have me interested to hear more of their material from your description, because I can feel the good songwriting in there somewhere.

-Zantera
Band: Oceansize
Song Name: Legal Teens

(Disclaimer: Allowed the song because it is from a different album)

This didn't hit me the way The Frame had hit me. I mean, it is good and has that style I remember from the other song, but it wasn't as memorable. I still liked it, though, and can see some differences in their sound now. Great pick.

-Ravenheart
Band: Emilie Simon
Song Name: The Frozen World

I really liked this song, don't get me wrong. It had this atmosphere of being "chilly," and it pulls it off very well. I just don't see myself listening to it as often as other stuff in this round. It's hard to rate it down like I did. She has a great voice, and the music was interesting, all those little sounds I found annoying on the first listen, but on the subsequent listens, I really liked them. Good pick!

Last 2:

-Quadrochosis
Band: Sweet Trip
Song Name: To all the dancers of the world, A round form of fantasy

Really cool intro...very electronic and pulled off nicely. The stops and the starts kinda throw me off and throw me off the vibe of the song a little, wasn't a fan of those for the most part. The song got a lot better after the off-time/double-time beat thing in the middle. Very nice emotion. I just think I don't "get" this style of music yet. I'll check it out more (like all the other music) after the roulette.

-contest_sanity
Band: Aaron Sprinkle
Song Name: Motor Cars

Pretty cool song, but it was just kind of there for me. It didn't leave me wanting more of anything really. Good use of electric guitar with no drums or bass, though.

----------------------------------------------

Standings:

Kari - 5+8+7=20

Space Invader - 7+5+8=20

Zantera - 6+6+5=17

Marvellous G - 4+7+6=17

Ravenheart - 6+5+5=16

Quadrochosis - 8+4+4=16

Ariich - 5+6+5=16

YtseBitsySpider - 5+5+6=16

Brother H - 4+6+6=16

contest_sanity - 6+4+4=14

I really like how these scores are coming about...it's making it possible for anyone to win so far. DUN DUN DUN

ROUND FOUR: AGGRESSION. Make me want to kill a small animal, please. You will get an extra point if it is NOT metal/hard rock. Not that I don't like metal or hard rock, because I love it, but I will be impressed to find some aggression on songs not in that genre. That said, I do love some good aggressive metal, so it's fair game, really. Also, tell me WHY it is aggressive to you.

GO!

As for Legal Teens, it's not really the type of song that hits you in the face, it's more very subtle and kinda grows for each listen.
Perfect night-time music at least.  :tup

Yeah, you do, but only if you check the box that says "Save to my outbox"

By the way guys, yesterday and today are really stressful for me as I am finishing up my internship teaching this semester (due to things beyond my control), but results should be up no later than Thursday.

So did you student teach this past Spring?  If so, how was it?

No, I student teach in the fall...just doing what is called "Practicum," meaning I rack up 20 hours observation time including teaching 3 lessons. I got placed so late into the Spring semester that I STARTED my hours after everyone was already done and the semester over. Making it all up now, just glad none of it is my fault.

IMPORTANT:

BrotherH has dropped from the roulette and the internet in general, for the time being. I'll figure out how this will affect the roulette. Any suggestions welcome, I'll change the game a bit tomorrow, so post now to suggest how to figure his absence into this.

Add someone else, and give them the lowest score.
And.
Add 1 extra round.
Title: Re: Song Roulette: Welcome to Jamesman (Round 3 Results)
Post by: Jamesman42 on May 18, 2011, 07:44:13 AM
I don't know about bringing someone else in. Well...it did work very well when I substituted for antigoon in Marvellous G's roulette.

My other option was to just drop him out and disperse his points amongst you guys, but in order from the lowest score to the highest score, with the lowest score getting the biggest share.

People, what should I do? The first paragraph or the second? Would like some opinions...just post in the thread (my inbox is getting full!).

Also, just waiting on Space Invader now.  :millahhhh

For the good of the game, of course.

Adding someone else will get you more music.
And ultimately that's what this is all about.
Not really a winning/losing thing.

I can't speak for others, but personally I wouldn't want to join in the middle of a roulette.
Maybe someone does, and then that's cool, but obviously this is up to Jamesman to decide.
Both choices has pro's and con's.

Title: Re: Song Roulette: Welcome to Jamesman (Round 4 Results)
Post by: Jamesman42 on May 19, 2011, 03:09:48 PM
You guys don't even know. I loved every song. So much so that ranking was the toughest it has been, because it was a pretty even playing field for everyone. But I figured out a ranking. I know someone will be pissed. But that is the nature of the game!

Top Pick: Zantera
Band: Periphery
Song Name: The Walk

This song! It had me at the intro, which was pounding and so musically interesting. It was aggressive but it was also musically satisfying. It was also just so brutal. This is music that gets me at the forefront, stuff I really like. Awesome awesome awesome.

Second Place: Ariich
Band: In Flames
Song Name: Take This Life

This could have easily been the top pick. It was tough, believe me. This song was relentless, man. Oh my goodness, but it was melodic as well and it really had me headbanging. Win.

(funny aside: When I went through the first listen, I was drinking tea and I started headbanging, and I somehow had this picture of you headbanging in a nice, eloquent room with a white sweater on, drinking tea and eating British food. Oh, stereotypes :lol )

Next Three:(+6 pts.)

-Kari
Band: And So I Watch You From Afar
Song Name: Set Guitars to Kill

This song could have also easily have been in one of the top spots. I listened to it before I read that you believe it's not metal, but I did think it was metal right away and throughout, so I am counting it as metal, sorry. But regardless, this was amazing. Such cool music...the intro was pounding and it was just a lot of crazy music that sounded a bit mean. Amazing pick.

-Space Invader
Band: Gustav Holst
Song Name: Mars, the Bringer of War

+1 for not metal/hard rock (it's classical, if anyone cares)

This piece fascinates me on several levels. It was all you aid it would be, and I loved it. The arrangements of the brass and odd time was brilliant. It had me the whole way through, and it wasn't repetitive...very progressive piece. I want to check out the whole suite.

-Ravenheart
Band: Emilie Autumn
Song Name: Opheliac

(Allowing because it's a different album from the other submission)
+1 for not metal

This was so good, and had so many interesting elements. Her vocals are very diverse and sound crazy at times, but in a good way. The music was also satisfying but you could feel the aggressiveness in it...I know I'm gonna love coming back to this song to hear it again when the roulette ends.

Next 3 (+5 pts.)

-contest_sanity
Band: Believer
Song Name: Idols of Ignorance

Very good thrash metal. Not actually a huge fan of thrash, but this had some killer riffs, and it hit me very well. the solo was great and fit perfectly in the context of the song. Vocals were also great, rough but clean...and I can be picky about thrash metal vocals, so good pick there!

-Quadrochosis
Band: Deftones
Song Name: Prince (Bassnectar remix)

It's hard for me to tell if it wasn't metal...I believe it was, but we can contest that if you'd like. To me, when he starts singing higher, it has a metal feel to it and I think I hear distorted guitars.

But anyway...I loved this song. It was so good, and I love the vocalist. I only know 2 Deftones songs, but this song was a good reminder of why I need to check them out more. I only rated it lower because I liked the others more...this was a great pick. I loved the electronic vibe as well, so good.

-Marvellous G
Band: Bob Dylan
Song Name: Masters of War

+1 for not metal/rock

The only Dylan I know is the well-known stuff from when I was growing up with my parents playing it. This was a very good tune. As it progressed, you could feel the tension mounting, although it was subtle. I really liked it!

Last:(+4 pts.)

-YtseBitsySpider
Band: Sepultura
Song Name: Domination

Don't get me wrong...this was aggression...I felt like I grew 2 extra testicles and I wanted to eat a kitten alive, covered in BBQ sauce. I was just impressed more with everything else. Very good pick!

----------------------------------------------

Standings:

To make things interesting, the bottom 3 contestants will take some of BrotherH's points....the lowest score will get 6 points, 2nd lowest will get 4 points, and third lowest will get 2 points. (+1) indicates the participant sent a nonmetal/rock song in round 4.

Space Invader - 7+5+8+6(+1)=27

Kari - 5+8+7+6=26

Zantera - 6+6+5+8=25

Marvellous G - 4+7+6+5(+1)=23

Ravenheart - 6+5+5+6(+1)=23

Ariich - 5+6+5+7=23

Quadrochosis - 8+4+4+5=21(+2)=23

contest_sanity - 6+4+4+5=19(+4)=23

YtseBitsySpider - 5+5+6+4=16(+6)=22

Brother H - 4+6+6=16

NOW THIS IS INTERESTING MUAHAHA ahem

ROUND FIVE: SAD/MELANCHOLY: However you take that. I like it dripping with emotion, but not cheesy, for the most part (there are exceptions, but they have to be really good). Explain what makes it sad/melancholy. Vocals or none. Lyrics may play a big role as well (also, if you want, it would help to send the lyrics from a site as well). MAKE ME CRY, PEOPLE...GO!

Oh man, I'd considered sending you Periphery! But I'm still very happy with second place, glad you dug it so much! If you liked that song then you should definitely check out the album, it's not flawless by any means but there are a lot of really excellent songs on it.

I also considered sending Mars from the Planets suite, but decided it wasn't aggressive enough. :lol

It doesn't haha

I got way busier with work and school than I thought this week. Like people literally hiring me on the spot to tutor them. I've been away from my computer a lot this week.

Tomorrow should be A LOT freer to finalize everything. I only have to go to the high school to finish my last few hours of interning and turn in all my work to my professor (which is on the way home). Then I can come home, do my last listen through and post results. About 28 hours from now.

Today is another busy day and I actually only came on DTF to let y'all know. :) Thanks for understanding, I hate holding it up.

I'm not gonna go on about how hard it was to rank these. It was, pretty much. So here we gooooooooo

Top Pick: Space Invader
Band: Neverending White Lights
Song Name: Black is the Colour

Amazingly and hauntingly sad. I really love this song. Beautiful melodies that have a lot of sadness in them. Is this their usual forte? This is music how I like it, you seem to know my tastes very well...I am suspicious of you man. haha

Second Place: contest_sanity
Band: Black Label Society
Song Name: Spoke in the Wheel

Love it. I know it's probably not typical of their music, but man, he can do soft and sad acoustic style really and surprisingly well. So heartfelt. Awesome lyrics as well! Awesome pick.

Next Three:(+6 pts.)

-Zantera
Band: Anathema
Song Name: One Last Goodbye

Dude. I love this band now. They hit the right notes and have the right the feel musically, to me. That probably doesn't make sense. I almost and JUST barely gave this second place. Shame to rank this down, but you know how it is. :)

-Ravenheart
Band: Smashing Pumpkins
Song Name: Crestfallen

First, props to RH for pulling a song at the last second when I realized that Z and RH sent the same song. :lol I liked Billy's voice here, because it usually grates me, but this was a huge surprise for me, and it worked fantastically. Good job man!

-YtseBitsySpider
Band: Queensryche
Song Name: Someone Else

That picture on the youtube video was perfect to this song. Man, I think this is the best use of Tate's voice, from the very limited amount of QR I have heard or seen live. Thumbs up man!

Next 3 (+5 pts.)

-Ariich
Band/Composer: Dmitri Shostakovich
Song Name: Piano Concerto No. 2, movt II: Andante

Beautiful sad piano music. Man. Good stuff here. I don't know what else to say! I just liked the other songs better, great pick man. This was borderline to be in the above 3 picks, but yours ended up being the one to fall through.  :-\

-Marvellous G
Band: Dave Matthews Band
Song Name: Baby Blue

That was sad indeed. I like DMB a lot. When he does restrained stuff like this, I really like it. Still, for some reason, DMB doesn't hit me quite as hard as I myself would think, so even the hits don't always grab me (maybe not right away though). Good pick, so hopefully a grower as time passes!

-Quadrochosis
Band: Fleetwood Mac
Song Name: Silver Springs

This was a good heartfelt piece, but, maybe I am weird, but I don't see how it is sad or depressing (besides the lyrics..maybe I am more focused on the music...). That said, when it starts picking up, man, that is some awesome stuff! I hope with time it will grow on me as a whole, because I can sense the awesome there. Ending is great as well!

Last:(+4 pts.)

-Kari
Band: Sigur Rós
Song Name: Ó Fridur

I don't know why, but it just did very little for me. I can see what they were doing, but it didn't grab me. :/ Sorry man.

----------------------------------------------

Standings:

Space Invader - 7+5+8+6(+1)+8=35

Zantera - 6+6+5+8+6=31

Kari - 5+8+7+6+4=30

contest_sanity - 6+4+4+5=19(+4)+7=30

Ravenheart - 6+5+5+6(+1)+6=29

Ariich - 5+6+5+7+5=28

Quadrochosis - 8+4+4+5=21(+2)+5=28

Marvellous G - 4+7+6+5(+1)+5=28

YtseBitsySpider - 5+5+6+4=16(+6)+6=28

Brother H - 4+6+6=16

ROUND SIX: Focus on Lyrics (note: music that enhances the feel of the lyrics will help here). Please also send me a link to the lyrics or a youtube video with the lyrics in them (on the video or description)

So, pick a song with fantastic lyrics. And I am telling you, if you get a song that also has music to ENHANCE the lyrics, you are probably on the right track. That said, who knows what I will like the best?

Also, if your song has lyrics that are in any way anti-God (or something else I really just do not feel comfortable with), I'll ask you to send a new song. This is really nothing new, but I want to emphasize the point considering the round theme, and hopefully not come off as close-minded. Just being brutally honest. :)

Alright, GO!

(I'll edit this later to put the rankings in order)

Ytse, if you really don't care about winning, you can pass if you'd like. Or ask someone else to help you find a good song. :tup

Title: Re: Song Roulette: Welcome to Jamesman (Round 6 Results)
Post by: Jamesman42 on June 11, 2011, 03:45:44 PM
AND WE HAVE RESULTS

Top Pick: contest_sanity
Band: Brave Saint Saturn
Song Name: Daylight

Wow! This song was really, really awesome. Lyrics painted a really great story while being totally relate-able. And the delivery and music....especially the end where he gets it super emotional. That whole bit after the samples was so well done! Love the whole space-rock feel of the song, this was an immediate "winner!" reaction from me...

Second Place: Quadrochosis
Band/Artist: Phil Wickham
Song Name: True Love

Good thinking getting a Christian song. :lol Lyrics are very well-written. Delivery is spot-on for the genre. I've heard of Wickham, and probably have heard something on the Christian radio station I listen to...but this is my first exposure. This is so much better than other music in Christian music circles.

Next Three:(+6 pts.)

-Ytsebitsyspider
Band: Dreamscape
Song Name: You Don't Know Me

Yes, prog rock done very well. Could barely tell his accent was there. Lyrics were great and encouraging, and prog rock done like this is perfect for lyrics like this, IMO. Reminds me of a more optimistic Redemption, maybe that's just me though.

-ariich
Band/Artist: Joanna Newsom
Song: Does Not Suffice

The first few times I listened and read along, I was really bored with this...but then the final listen through smacked me in the face...I loved reading along with it and hearing the story. The end is weird and unexpected after hearing her sing all of that stuff, by the way! :lol Is that what attracts you to her music, the way she writes the lyrics (such great choices for words, even the subtle or little choices had me going "nice!") and tells the story?

Also, you didn't send me lyrics, so you lose all your points forever and you're banned as well.

-Marvellous G
Band: Pearl Jam
Song Name: Black

Gonna be honest, when I saw you sent Pearl Jam, I was gonna ask you to send another song because...I really don't like them (from the radio stuff I've heard). But considering the round theme and just trying to be openminded, I went into this. Good job man! You sent me a PJ song where I liked his voice, and the subject matter, actual lyrics and delivery (vocally and music) worked wonderfully together! Paints a good picture of a breakup.

Next 3 (+5 pts.)

-Zantera
Band: Radiohead
Song Name: Pyramid Song

I only know a few songs by Radiohead, and love those songs. This wasn't up to the caliber of the songs I have heard...but something tells me that Radiohead is a band I would have to let grow on me...there's probably something I am missing but will get eventually. The music and lyrics worked very well together...really out there stuff but it worked fine. Good pick!

-Ravenheart
Band: Depeche Mode
Song Name: Waiting for the Night

A band I've heard of before...unlike what I thought they would be (actually, not sure what I did think they would be like!). I could definitely see myself driving on a quiet, cool night, listening to this song. That said, only ranking it down a bit because the lyrics weren't as good (IMO of course) as other songs in this round. A VERY good relation between the lyrics and music, though!

-kari
Band: Frightened Rabbit
Song Name: Poke

This was good stuff...a bit different, and flowed very nicely...the lyrics were a bit too...I don't know...poetic for me to appreciate in how they were delivered. They are really good lyrics. (About love and moving on, right?). Just unsure about the delivery, so yeah. Overall liked it, though! And the end was very nice, I could hear something like distorted guitar coming in but never fully developing, which was a nice touch.

Last:(+4 pts.)

Space Invader
Band: A Perfect Circle
Song Name: 3 Libras

Don't get me wrong. Loved the song, good lyrics...but compared to the other songs sent, this was a bit more run of the mill. Don't be disappointed too much, it reminded me that I need to check out APC (I've only heard "Blue" and I love it).

----------------------------------------------

Standings:

Space Invader - 7+5+8+6(+1)+8+4=39

contest_sanity - 6+4+4+5=19(+4)+7+8=38

Zantera - 6+6+5+8+6+5=36

Kari - 5+8+7+6+4+5=35

Quadrochosis - 8+4+4+5=21(+2)+5+7=35

Ariich - 5+6+5+7+5+6=34

Ravenheart - 6+5+5+6(+1)+6+5=34

Marvellous G - 4+7+6+5(+1)+5+6=34

YtseBitsySpider - 5+5+6+4=16(+6)+6+6=34

ROUND SEVEN: THREE MINUTES OR LESS

Can be anything really! Not a second longer than 3 minutes, I'll be strict about that actually. ;)

Protip: Make it pack a punch or go somewhere enough (like with a purpose and resolution). Lyrics will probably help more than an instrumental, but who knows? Pop music may work well here. Honestly, something with driving energy would work here well I think..but looking at Foobar, acoustic does it for me as well. But whatever, it's open, so go with what you think i will like best. We are seven rounds in, so you should have something of an idea of what I would like best from what you can choose from. Good luck and godspeed you black emperors!

Yeah, despite what it seems like - I'm actually NOT drunk.  :lol
I recently switched from Firefox to Chrome, so because of that I accidentally sent the first PM.
Because of having 30 tabs up at once, I obviously forgot the link to the song.

So yeah, I'm probably just tired. ;)

Yeah I agree.
Firefox was annoying, because it had 5 year old bugs that wasn't fixed, and it was always running in the background when I closed it.
And let's not forget how much CPU it used.

So yeah, Chrome is great.  :hat

Oh yeah, didn't realise that was a question.

Yeah I love her lyrics. I love the music as well, her brand of contemporary folk is gorgeous, but something that really stands out is the elegant but generally simple poetry in her words. That song especially is straightforward enough, but has enough lovely little touches, and an overall feel and story, to elevate it up another notch.

Just need ravenheart and Space Invada

Starting the first listens now, this round is the opposite of the last round, will go by much faster because of the song lengths.

ALSO:

Let's do round 8...the top two players will go onto the final round (still not sure how I will do that yet).

BUT WAIT

Round 8 is open, but none of the bands used before can be used again. Only stipulation, in the vein of some of the other roulettes that came before.

If I get SI and RH's submissions in today, I could have results up tomorrow...I have all day free today and I think tomorrow, just working on my portfolio and maybe some tutoring.

Title: Re: Song Roulette: Welcome to Jamesman (Round 6 Results)
Post by: Jamesman42 on June 19, 2011, 03:18:25 PM
Very close round for everyone. I had to really nitpick to see what songs would get placed where. Everyone easily could have gotten 1st or 2nd place. Don't feel bad.

Top Pick: Space Invader
Band: Dredg
Song Name: Long Days and Vague Clues

What a fun song. Took me on a trip and does so much under 2 minutes. Its progressiveness really threw me for a loop in a good way. This was instrumental goodness. Seems like Dredg is a band I need to check out! Great pick!

Second Place: Zantera
Band: Katatonia
Song Name: Omerta

This flowed like a beautiful river. The vocals are really great. Abrupt ending is so trippy, because it just ends, but I really liked it haha. You said this song is unlike the rest of their stuff..what is the rest of their stuff like? I want more! :)

Next Three:(+6 pts.)

-contest_sanity
Band: Grammatrain
Song Name: Jonah

I got a Tool vibe a little bit in the chorus, and I liked it! Song is driving and energetic, pretty much a sort of song I was looking for, because the time feels like it has been enough to give the song all the room to develop. Great song.

-Ravenheart
Band: VAST
Song Name: Lost

Love the feel of this song. Excellent! It got going at a perfect time, and it was very peaceful but not boring. Not much else to say but I really liked it!

-ariich
Band: Green Day
Song Name: Hitchin' a Ride

Green Day are very hit or miss for me. This is a fun song and utilizes the less than 180 seconds very well. I think it's just the genre that they are that makes me not like it as much as you may like it, because that whole style never really gets my attention much. But for the genre, this was probably one of the best I've heard.

Next 3 (+5 pts.)

-Quadrochosis
Band: Mew
Song Name: Her Voice is Beyond Her Years

I loved this. Even so, I think I don't fully get it, and yet I do. I know, that's weird. Ranking this song is tough! on one hand, it is really good...on the other hand, I'm not sure what's on the other hand, but something is holding me back about the song. Is this normal for getting into Mew?! This will be explored further.

-Marvellous G
Band/Artist: Jeff Buckley
Song Name: Corpus Christi Carol

Nice little tune. Really evokes emotions out of you. Guitar is so very nice. The vocals are raw and passionate, but they fit the music very well. That said, it's not music I would go out of my way to listen to, but yet it is music I would listen to if it was on...yeah :lol

-Ytsebitsyspider
Band: Tim Donahue (featuring JLB)
Song Name: Let Go

Organ intros for the win! I felt like LaBrie was a nice touch, but the song itself was a little...underdeveloped? I liked it, don't get me wrong. Just, it sounds like it could be the intro to a great epic.

Last:(+4 pts.)

kari
Band: Amatorski
Song Name: Come Home

I am in the 50's for sure. I like it. The bass works so well here, it carries the song so nicely. I could see myself dancing with a girl to the end of the song, very magical. I wanna hear the rest of the EP. With that said, only ranked down because it obviously isn't my favorite style, but you sent a very good pick. :) OH AND PLEASE DON'T AVENGE THIS PLACING BY PLACING ME LAST IN YOUR ROULETTE OH MAN

ROUND EIGHT: OPEN

Please try not to make the song too long, unless you think it is that good. This is the last round before the final round, where the top 2 contestants go on. Let's do this!

I wasn't sure how well that song would fare with it being a last-minute thing after the Evergrey situation. Glad you liked it! VAST are one of my favorite bands.

This will be a tough round. Anything. Anything at all.

ALSO:

To make this anyone's game still, points will be doubled for whatever you place. So if you place first, you get 16 points, if you place last, you get 8 points, and so on.

Hai all, I'm alive and well.
My computer broke down last Saturday, and it was my harddrives that kicked it, so currently I am without a computer, which sucks.
I've ordered new parts and will build a new computer, but looks like I wont get them until Monday, and the worst part of all this is that all my music is gone. :/
However, I'll see if I can get a song sent for this, better something then nothing.

Luckily I got to "borrow" my sister's laptop, but I don't really like laptops that much tbh.

As for the final between the top 2, an album seems like way too much of a "chore" to work through. I was thinking of the top 2 sending me three songs, and I will rate each song on a scale of 1 to 10. WHoever has the higher average wins.

Thoughts?

That's cool.  I think it might be a little better, though, if it was 3 songs from the same artist, but that's your call.  My thinking is that 3 songs might give you a better window into whether or not you really like a band or not.  I also think it should be an artist that hasn't been used before, but again -- your roulette.

I feel bad about not getting this done sooner. Work was busy through Saturday, and it's a physically demanding job. Yesterday I ended up not being near my computer as much, and when I was I forgot to get to this. Today was about the same and then I remembered...I dunno why I forgot, it's not like I lost interest! Anywho, here we go! Tough to rank these, nothing stood out among the rest, but none were stinkers either. I could really tell you all put effort into your picks.

Top Pick: contest_sanity
Band: Sent by Ravens
Song Name: Trailer vs. Tornado

Yeah, this is good stuff, post-hardcore with clean vocals. Great energy, kinda reminds me of Underoath actually, and that's a good thing. Also, the end is just awesome, when the pause happened, it was musical bliss. Also, gotta say, you seem to have figured out what I would like and not like. :lol

Second Place: YtseBitsySpider
Band: Soilwork
Song Name: The Night Comes Clean

:metal :metal :metal
Man, this is an experience in metal listening. Awesome pick! The screams and the cleans go great together, it all feels natural. Now I know why my friend insists on this band.

Next Three( +6 pts.)

-Space Invader
Band: Pendragon
Song Name: Indigo

The tone of this song is very smooth and "real," by prog metal standards. I like it a lot, though the vocals are somewhat off putting. I think fans of prog metal would love this song. Very nice pick, and it doesn't feel like 13 minutes!

-ariich
Band: Haken
Song Name: Eternal Rain

Thank you for honoring your promise. :) The feel of this song feels so modern and I love it. That keyboard (I think) is great stuff. Vocals are a little bland to me, but not bad in any sense. They're just kind of there, but you get used to it!

-kari
Band: 65daysofstatic
Song Name: Radio Protector

This was great, another post-rock band I need to check out. I like it, very beautiful!

Next 3 (+5 pts.)

-Quadrochosis
Band: This Will Destroy You
Song Name: A Three Legged Workhorse

VERY good post-rock. Beautiful and has a very good voice. Some of the "glitching" is very interesting and I feel it adds to the element of the song. The buildup toward the end was well done.

-Ravenheart
Band: The Cure
Song Name: Bloodflowers

The Cure are a band I have never heard before knowingly. This song was good, but it did drag for me. That said, really cool vibe from the song and they have a dense sound that gives a good sense of emotion.

-Zantera
Band: Stateless
Song Name: Ariel

This is interesting stuff. I don't know what to say besides it's interesting, and I like it. The beat is good stuff, very electronic sounding while also being very accessible...I think they pull that off very well.

Last: (+4 pts.)

Marvellous G
Band: Fleet Foxes
Song Name: Helplessness Blues

It's great that music like this, that has a more timeless feel, is still being released today. I'm not much into folk, but this song made it really great!

Also, I feel like I often give you less points in this roulette, but I think your tastes are very different from mine in the songs that you send...but when I go to listen to more of the same artists you sent me, time may help me gain a better appreciation of the world of music that you love...and I think that is a great thing! But for now, these rankings are what they are...

----------------------------------------------

Standings:

contest_sanity - 6+4+4+5=19(+4)+7+8+6+16=60

Space Invader - 7+5+8+6(+1)+8+4+8+12=59

YtseBitsySpider - 5+5+6+4=20(+6)+6+6+5+14=57

Zantera - 6+6+5+8+6+5+7+10=53

Ariich - 5+6+5+7+5+6+6+12=52

Kari - 5+8+7+6+4+5+4+12=51

Ravenheart - 6+5+5+6(+1)+6+5+6+10=50

Quadrochosis - 8+4+4+5=21(+2)+5+7+5+10=50

Marvellous G - 4+7+6+5(+1)+5+6+5+8=47

Doubling the points made for some interesting leads. YBS had some low rounds but pulled it up toward the end to get third place. The lower ranked people are those with music tastes that, from what I have seen around the forum, are less like mine altogether. I'm glad that everyone has participated, because I have a very wide variety of music to go through and get to know. Like I said in MG's ranking, I'll probably come to love those genres that didn't hit me in this roulette. I can't think of many picks that any of you sent that I didn't want to explore further! This has been a success. With that said, we have one final round.

contest_sanity vs. Space Invader DUN DUN DUN

FINAL ROUND:

Send me two songs, by any artist. Both songs have to be by the same artist, and they can be from different albums if you'd like.

I will rate each song out of ten. The average of the ratings of both songs will be your final score and will be added to your current score.

For example, let's say SI sent me Song A and Song B.

I rank Song A 6/10 and Song B 8/10. The average of the two songs' ratings is 7, because I take the average of 6 and 8. I will then add 7 to SI's current score....so that would be 59+7=66.

Obviously, whoever's final score is highest wins. ;)

Go!

The Cure is one of my favorite bands, and while I don't think this is their best album or song, this one has just hit home recently with me so much.

Some are repeats. My goal now (as well as the final round, still waiting on both guys) is to listen to the albums you guys sent from. In fact, I have already started that.

Oceansize - Frames (Quad)

This album is great, great stuff. I've listened 5 or 6 times now. It is a very dense album to me, layers to peel back and explore...and that is a good thing. It gets a little samey for me right now but I can tell I just need to digest it more.

Rating: 9/10

dredg - The Pariah, The Parrot, The Delusion (Space Invader)

Gooooood stuff. 17 tracks of amazingly catchy melodies. Lyrics on a few songs were questionable at first, but I'm cool. Some of it is filler but in a good way...as transitional pieces. I swear, now I get dredg melodies stuck in my head daily since hearing the whole album.

Rating: 8/10

Next to listen to (because I dl'ed the albums already, though with no rhyme or reason):

Pure Reason Revolution - The Dark Third
Mew - Frengers
The Dear Hunter - Act Whatever it was Ariich :lol
Katatonia (actually haven't downloaded but I am seeing them in October with Opeth, so I may as well start some listening)

I will get through all the artists eventually, it could take a year! I want to give all the albums honest and repeated listens.

Also, thanks for the recs on other albums, please do let me know when I post what other albums are considered good, really appreciate that!

SI and CS have sent their submissions. Ariich, I presume I'm not holding anyone up on their roulettes starting, right? Busy week ahead of me and I want to not rush it.

For the record.

Sepultura was never sent.

The song I sent for the metal:intensity round was in fact -

PANTERA - Domination (live)

Nah Lat started early so you can take your time!

I'll compile a list of the albums for my entries when I'm back home.

Here are the albums I sent songs from (where it's not my favourite by them, I've added my favourite in brackets):

The Dear Hunter - Act III: Life and Death [2009]
God is an Astronaut - God is an Astronaut [2008]
Freak Kitchen - Organic [2005] (Dead Soul Men [2000])
In Flames - Come Clarity [2006] (Colony [1999])
Dmitri Shostakovich - Piano Concerto No. 2 (find a decent recording of it)
Joanna Newsom - Have One on Me [2010]
Green Day - Nimrod [1997]
Haken - Aquarius [2010]

They're not all the best albums by those bands or artists though.

That reminds me, the Emilie Simon album is the OST she did for March of the Penguins, so it's not an official album or the one I'd recommend first.

The next time you're in your local Best Buy and see that huge CD rack of nothing but Emilie Simon albums and a huge cardboard cut-out of her person, I recommend getting Vegetal first. I'm sure you're salivating at the thought of hearing a full album by her.

If you really want to, add albums you think are worth checking out. :tup
