Okay so I like to think of myself as a rather grammatically proper person.
I have always said the phrase "by accident" (as in "I stubbed my toe by accident").
But lately, to my concern, I've noticed a lot more people who prefer "on accident", which doesn't even make sense,
but for some reason it has caught on. Is this a regional thing? Do I just hang out with too many inbred hicks?
-
Er.. By accident. Must be correct.
-
"...on accident."
Although I generally avoid either, and opt to use "accidentally".
-
I say "on accident" as well.
-
I say "by accident" or "accidentally."
I think "on accident" originated from people saying "on purpose."
"On purpose" and "by accident" make sense to me, but "by purpose" and "on accident" don't sound right at all.
That was a lot of quotation marks.

The whole thing?

Pretty sure "on accident" makes no grammatical sense.
-
By accident is the correct answer.

Says the guy who just got done saying english doesn't have to be logical :P
Generally I say accidentally, but I think on accident sounds more natural to me between the two.
-
Rather than type something myself, I'll just say, "What Phantasmatron said"
-
I say "on accident" as well.
-
It's "by accident" and "on purpose".

"By accident." People who say, "on accident," have been bugging me ever since elementary school.
-
Accidentally
-
Although I generally avoid either, and op to use "accidentally".
The whole thing?
Are you asking if I pronounce it "accident-ly" or "accidentally"? I don't really know, actually. They both feel familiar when I say them.
-
By accident. On accident is stupid.

Ah, yes, I'm aware that meme, but I didn't make the connection. (Still doesn't make sense in the context of my post.)

yes it does
By accident. I the whole thing on accident.
-
I didn't know there was a difference on this matter. Why should it be "by" instead of "on"? Educate me, please.
-
By accident, definitely. On accident just sounds juvenile.
-
Oh, I see the difference. "On" tells a location, "by" tells the method the event occurred in.

By accident, on purpose.
-
Accidentally.
Poll needs this to be the third option.
-
It's "by accident" and "on purpose".
For real

Yeah in spelling or pronunciation. But grammar has to be correct still! :P
-
...Come to think of it, I say it both ways.
-
...Come to think of it, I go both ways.
:eyebrows:
-
That too.
-
Accidentally :neverusethis:
-
By accident.
On accident sounds fucking retarded.
-
By request, poll has been updated with third option. You can change your vote if need be.
-
Accidentally. :)
-
By accident. Accidently is obviously right as well but so is by accident, so no reason to have that as an option on the poll...
-
If you turn your head 90 degrees to the right, the poll results are flipping you off.

I say on accident sometimes, but it's only because the people around here don't pay much attention to grammar/spelling. One of those things I have picked up on living here my whole life.
Deal with it.
-
I think I say accidentally more often than "by accident". I noted that before, but with the new poll I'll add with this.
