Who's planning on playing this? My copy doesn't get here until Saturday, so I figured I'd post in this thread before any spoilers had a chance to get in.
-
I'm currently broke, though I'll probably still download it when I get back to my desktop later this week.
Fully expecting the greatest game ever.
-
Me me me. I'm at work now, but I have it on steam all preloaded and ready to go.
Also, who else thinks valve massively trolled everyone with the GLaDOS@home "early" release thing? :lol
-

Undoubtedly the case.
-
Steam is decrypting the files now :caffeine:.

Duh...this is GLaDOS we are talking about.

I'm at work now ¬_¬

I'm at work now ¬_¬
so do I .
-
Played it a bit (80 minutes according to steam) and so far its fantastic. I love the humour they put in again and the atmosphere is a lot better than in part 1. Also, the new puzzle elements they added are a great addition.
-
I want to, but I don't really have the money and with exams coming up I should be focusing on uni anyways. Oh well, I'll have the summer to play it.
-
I CAN'T WAIT TO PLAY :metal
-
Getting it on thursday when it comes out here in the UK. GAHHHH MUST PLAY!
-
I'll probably buy it after the school year is over. Lower price, no schoolwork to worry about, and friends off from school if I feel like doing co-op.
-
Bought it, so I'm waiting for Rina to come over so we can play
-
Went to a midnight release last night for Portal 2 with a couple of friends, and went back to one of their houses to play it for a little while before I realized an all nighter was going to destroy me. I can say I am officially anxious to get payed this Friday.
-
Had it pre-ordered and played it for a few minutes this morning before leaving for class. I can't wait to play it more aaaggghhh

Oi, good luck with that dude.
-
Playing right now. Been playing since I got it last night. BTW, Mortal Kombat is killer also.
-
Few hours in, it is amazing so far.
For the people getting it later, try to avoid spoilers as much as you can. The story is pretty damn cool and a lot of the effect is lost if you know too much.
-
The game is out already?? Wow I'm excited to play it! I'm going to wait for my brother to buy it since he makes more money than me and he was the one who introduced me to the first one :P
Plus, I'm not that great at the puzzles and he's really good at that stuff.

I'm watching a playthrough on YouTube. :P

Rina and I are playing right now, about an hour in^^ Love it!

I'm really curious how the co-op mode fits into the Portal mythos as a whole, if at all. I hope it's not some glorified "multiplayer" mode.

I haven't played it yet, but I do know that Valve said Co-op takes place after the events of the singleplayer mode, which would suggest sticking to the storyline somewhat.

I watched an episode of a co-op playthrough and it seems cool, you solve the puzzles with a buddy (obviously) but what i mean is that there is really teamwork so you're not just soloing it all while your friend just fucks about.

Rina and I are stuck on level 20 or 21, the one with 3 lasers. Its the level after Glados "cleans up"
-
So, I think I'm going to give in and buy Portal 2 right the fuck now. I have a bunch of money meant for saving, but I can just replace what I spend with my paycheck this Friday. I have thought this through for a total of 8 seconds.
-
Rina and I are stuck on level 20 or 21, the one with 3 lasers. Its the level after Glados "cleans up"
I loved that chamber, it has a pretty cool solution. If you want a solution let me know, but figuring it out by yourself is way more fun of course :p.
Also, my post that I thought I posted here but was in the videogames thread:
Portal 2 is very cool so far. Sometimes wish it was a tad more challenging but the atmosphere and dialogue are brilliant. Have the feeling that I'm nearing the end already though, which would mean it's not very long again.

AAHHHHHH IT'S ONLY HALF DONE INSTALLING

Pm'ed!
-
This co-op is amazing.
-
Can't wait to get to play the second one it seems even better than the first one and i'm in love with the first one.
-
I've got to get this.
Time to mow a few neighbor's lawns. Ugh.
-
Somewhat ironically, you'll probably spend more time mowing their lawns then you will on the single player campaign.
-
Cave Johnson is amazing :lol
-
Spoilers.
The single player ending was fantastic, but I was a little distracted wondering how Chell didn't die. Still, it was too cool for that to ruin it.
Also, I think I liked this ending song more than Still Alive
Did anyone look at the Super 8 "interactive teaser?" It was really neat, I've never seen something like that before.

SPOILERS
I also found it a bit weird. The thing that I found even weirder was that the portal on the moon was created in like 1 second while the portal gun doesn't work instantly but shoots a bolt. But those are minor details, it's still a cool ending. And the sentries making music were the best.
Cave Johnson is amazing :lol
Yea, he has some incredible lines :lol.
-
Is Glados that bitch that keeps talking to me all the time? Been listening to music all the time while playing but now i just played with game sounds on so i don't know.

WHAT!? You haven't been listening to the game this entire time!? Start over. Now.
-
:'(
Not that it would take long since now i know what to do on the levels.
-
What, you didn't listen to Glados? Please use sound for part 2, it makes it so much better :p.
-
Yeah, Glados is one of the best parts of you just lost the game.
-

Die.
ALSO I FUCKING KNEW THAT WHEATELY WAS GOING TO GO INSANE ON ME SOMEWHERE DOWN THE LINE. I DIDN'T TRUST HIM FROM THE BEGINNING.

You know it's really HIM who wants to play. ;)
-
Beat the single player today. Awesome, awesome, awesome game.
-
That just happened.
-
I think Volk and I are planning on finishing it on Tuesday. :metal

There's something about the Portal timeline that bothers me a bit.
Spoilers
As far as I'm aware, Glados went online and took over Aperture on Bring Your Daughter To Work Day. At one point in Portal 2 you find a bunch of science projects done by employees' daughters for Bring Your Daughter To Work Day (all of the potato experiments and the volcano). One of the potatoes grew into some huge plant and is mostly blocking the cardboard presentation behind it, but if you zoom up on it you can see "Chell" written on it.
When did she do this project? I can't imagine she'd do the potato thing as an adult, but if she did it as a kid then how long ago was this Bring Your Daughter To Work Day? Was she kept in stasis for years before Portal 1 took place?

My impression is that it has been several years, yes.

I'm assuming that's all implied, yes.
Also I just finished the campaign for the first time. The very last couple of minutes were all hilariously brilliant. Loved every second of it. Now I'm going through my second play through with the commentary on like I did with Portal 1.
That is, unless someone with the PC version (or PS3, I hear works with Steam users as well) wants to do the Co-op with me. I really want to go through it sometime soon.
-
So I can officially confirm that btw, as according to the Combine OverWiki, GLaDOS took over the Aperture Science facility in 1998, while the Black Mesa Incident takes place in the vague year 200-. Portal 2 is then said to be set after Half-Life 2 which is itself around 20 years after the Black Mesa Incident.
-
Sounds good. Makes you wonder what sort of mental condition Chell really is in.
edit: Wait, I don't think that works and one of us (probably me) is confused. If Chell were in stasis since she was a little kid at the Bring Your Daughter To Work Day then her body should have remained the same during that time (since she doesn't age from Portal 1 to 2)
-
Played the first hour or so tonight, and I've actually been laughing out loud a lot, way more than even with the first game.
My one minor quibble: I'm not really a huge fan of the overgrown, destroyed scenery. I kind of preferred the cleanliness of the first one. Oh well, it's still awesome so far.

I'm the opposite, i love the ruin-y areas!

She's a dangerous, mute lunatic.
Also I don't think she is in stasis (at the beginning of Portal 1), or at least that's not the impression I got.

I really hope when Half Life 2: Episode 3 comes out (spoiler - it' won't) that there is a small crossover between Portal 2 and Half-Life. Even something as much as dialogue about it would be so cool. I don't know, I fucking love things like that.

I'm guessing that the Borealis will be the most we get. Maybe some clipboards or something small referencing Aperture/Portal.
-
I was thinking something similar, to be honest. If I remember correctly, Borealis is a part of Aperture right? It'd be cool to maybe stumble across some files on a computer screen or maybe an audio log or something.
I don't know, but mother fucker I'd take down entire nations for Half-Life 2: Episode 3 right about now.
-

Yep.
Finding its docking bay is a Portal 2 achievement.

This, and CJ of course makes a reference to Black Mesa, but that's not so groundbreaking. I would love it if Gordon met GLaDOS.

Personally, I was thinking something more along the lines of Chell being amongst a large group of refugees/survivors/something. But GLaDOS making a guest appearance would be so fucking cool.
-
Well I hate to break it to ya, but when I said Portal 2 takes place after Half-Life 2, the general consensus is that that means at least a couple centuries after...
-
Wait, really? I was unaware of this.
I guess that explains the mass amounts of lush fields at the end of Portal 2, instead of Combine everywhere.
-
Yeah, the comic in the extras explains that part.
-
If I had to take a guess, I'd say Portal 1 probably takes place around the same time as Half-Life 2.
-

We don't know that at all.
-
DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM?
I'M THE MAN WHO'S GONNA TO BURN YOUR HOUSE DOWN, WITH THE LEMONS!
I'M GONNA GET MY ENGINEERS TO INVENT A COMBUSTIBLE LEMON THAT BURNS YOUR HOUSE DOWN!
Though not really a spoiler of some sort.
-
portal 2 sound file dump with some premade into ringtones and also all the music in the game. You will need 7zip.

I don't have the money, and exams are a month away, and I'm probably gonna get banned from the network for exceeding the daily download limit, but I bought it and am installing now.

Awesome :D. I'm sure it's worth it, it's an amazing game.
Playing co-op now with Alex. It was really easy until a few chambers back but the difficulty is ramping up now, so it's becoming pretty fun. Puzzles can be kinda complicated with 4 portals at the same time :).
-
If anyone wants to play some co-op they can add me on Steam. The ID is genowyn or ardywyn or something, I forget which.

I'M GOING TO RAPE SOMETHING PRECIOUS TO YOU
COME ON PLAY WITH ME, IT WILL BE A VERY PLEASANT EXPERIENCE
-
Just beat the single player. I like the song.
-
I just had the game completely fucking spoiled by some douche on Facebook.
I DON'T WANT TO GET IT ANY MORE
-
Completed the whole co-op in one go. The last few chambers are pretty fun and the ending sequence kinda continues a bit of story where Portal 2 left off (regarding glados and aperture science).
-

I pretty much avoided the entire internet until I could finish the game specifically so none of it would be spoiled (like the part where Chell kills Gordan Freeman and Glados was Gman all along).
-

Yeah, the last handful of levels were really fun.
-
I just finished the single player campaign. And I fell in love immediately.
Valve somehow has this amazing power where they make more than great games. They create characters you legitimately care about, and realistic worlds that are huge and dynamic. I enjoyed this game to death. I enjoyed it so much...I died...yup. It killed me.
-
This is the first time where I'm actually hoping we get DLC (content, not hats and skin).
-
I +1 both of those statements. Valve really has a knack for worldbuilding and creating a compelling mythology; the Gman, who needs no introduction of course, speaks volumes to this.
-
The Half-life series alone has the best video game story telling I have ever seen from any video game production team, in all honesty. There really is nothing like it. Plus, it's got all that atmosphere and stuff.
-
I really can't wait to see how the next HL game ends up looking, Portal 2 is absolutely gorgeous.
-
Half-Life is boring.
Portal is pretty damn good though!
-
Half-Life is boring.
Portal is pretty damn good though!
Oh you.
-
What the fuck
-
Side note - So far I only have one disappointment with this game. There doesn't seem to be a challenge mode where you are limited on the number of portals you can use for each level. I loved screaming at myself for failing each course multiple times in Portal 1 because of this.
-
I feel like overall I had less of a hard time finishing this game than I did with the original, but I can let that slide since it's still so damn amazing.
-
It's the story that counts. And there are still a few pretty challenging sections. What is so good about Portal 2 is that is a legitimately GOOD game. Something a lot of games lack.
-
So in terms of difficulty you guys thought this was easier than Portal 1?
-
For the most part. While there were a small handful of chambers that left me scratching my head, I didn't feel like I was challenged the whole way through. Whereas (at least with my first play through of Portal ever) with Portal I felt myself running around like a dumbass on many occasions. Though you know, that could definitely be due to not being able to "think with portals" as easily as I can now having had the game since it came out.
Though TheVoxyn mentioned something to me while playing co-op that I completely agreed with. I wish there were puzzles that involved all of the different elements that have been presented to you throughout the game.
-
So in terms of difficulty you guys thought this was easier than Portal 1?
I wouldn't say it was easier or harder. The puzzles just had a larger scope than the first one. I would say this game required more thought prior to solving it, but after you figured out how it was done, you spent more time executing the solution.
-
I would say this game required more thought prior to solving it, but after you figured out how it was done, you spent less time executing the solution.
I think that's what you meant to say. If not, that's what I think. I loved the new character(s), though. That is really what made this game as great as it is.
-

I meant more time executing the solution compared to the first game. Once you figured out the solution in Portal 1, you could solve it really quick because the puzzles were smaller in scope. Portal 2 had puzzles with more steps than Portal 1.
-
Just finished the single player, I absolutely loved it. WE'RE NOT GOING TO SPACE
-

Yeah I was hoping for this too, trying to get Gold Medals (or any medals on some levels) was much more of a challenge so good to do after the game, also the Advanced Chambers and Still Alive Challenge levels were good. The Co-Op made up for that a bit. Has everyone completed that? Some of those were a bit more of a challenge.
-
Did anyone else save the 'different' turret on the turret redemption line? :lol
-
I did. But then 5 seconds later accidentally dropped it into the void. :'(
-
YOU MONSTER
-
It was an accident! What did you do with it?
P.S. And oh man. GLaDOS trolling with the companion cube was epic.
P.P.S. And the soundtrack is beautifully perfect.
-
GLaDOS is hilarious.
-
Just finished it, and what a brilliant, brilliant game.
I basically loved every second, although my very minor quibble looking back is how easy it was, at least compared to the original. Still, just a really heartwarming game overall, can't wait to play co-op with my friend when FUCKING PSN COMES BACK ONLINE.
-
P.S. And oh man. GLaDOS trolling with the companion cube was epic.
As a side note, the little tune that plays when you're near one was a great touch.
-
So, I haven't played it yet, but I do have a question.
Is it really worth buying? I'll be getting it from Gamefly at some point, but I definitely REALLY want to play it. Is it justifiable to spend $60 on something that I'll be able to play through once for free?
-

Rent it from Gamefly and play through it 2-3 times. I mean, you can beat the entire thing in one sitting if you dedicate enough of your day to do so. And believe me, it's worth playing through multiple times. I just beat it for the second time today.
-
I'm thinking I'll wait till they lower the price personally. Works out fine since I'm still in school now anyway.
-
At chapter 8, just dropped by to say that the lemon quote from Cave was just absolutely hilarious and brilliant. This game's already my favorite puzzle game of all time. (prolly the only decent one I've played :P)
-
The timing and title of Chapter 9 was fucking brilliant.

I don't remember all the chapter names, but I'm pretty sure I know which one you are talking about, and I agree :lol

So what do you guys think of the new song?
And as long as I don't give specifics like the title, I don't think it counts as spoilers. Everyone should've been expecting another song during the credits.
-
I like it, but it's no Still Alive.
-
Musically I think it's better than Still Alive but, like you said, we knew it was coming which sort of lessens the impact / woah factor.

Nothing beats Still Alive.

Yeah but weren't you one of the few other people on here who actually listens to JoCo?
As a JoCo fan I definitely like Want You Gone better. Kinda reminds of Space Doggity.

I agree with this completely.

His work with Portal is all I've heard of his, unless I've heard other things and didn't realize.
-
It felt less like a cute, unique thing, and more of a fully-fledged piece of awesome.
Which incidentally, is exactly Portal vs Portal 2.
It nicely kept in style with Still Alive without emulating it to the point of lameness, which was a damn hard thing to do.

Then who was that other guy? There was like me and LHK (I think?) and someone else. Goddamn it I'm so lost now.

Just finished the single player and OMGOMGOMGOMG THIS GAME IS SO AWESOME!!
Also, the companion cube being thrown out with Chell was a nice touch!
Now, if the PSN ever gets back up, I could play with some of you PC nubs. :jamaritard:
-
SO. FUCKING. GOOD.
In Chapter 7 right now.
-
My only question is how can they do Portal 3 now?

You will know when you finish the co-op mode. I beat it over at a friend's house before I bought my copy.

I think he is absolutely right about the play testing thing. I just finished a play through on commentary mode, and so many times I was disappointed to hear them discuss areas that would have been harder, BUT NO THE PLAYTESTERS WERE SPENDING TOO MUCH TIME STARING BLANKLY INTO WALLS IN THIS ROOM SO WE DID THIS.
-
My only gripe with the game was that it could have been harder. Apart from that it's near perfect.
-
I love the parallels to Greek mythology.

Also, what do you guys thinks about this theory (https://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1850363)?

I believe it was glaurung who professed his love for me after I revealed that I'd been hooked on JoCo's greatest hits album. Of course, I discovered that by searching my own name on the GMD forum.

I honestly believe it's people like her that caused Portal 2 to be a much simpler game than it could have been.

The official Valve forums are a hellhole. :|

FUCKING HELL THAT WAS EPIC.

Anyone?

1) Your link doesn't work.
2) I thought those things were made about as implicit as they could be without Glados outright saying "I am Caroline, who is also your mother." The points about the teddy bear being near the stasis chamber and the supposed growth agent being used to take care of the Chell's age plothole was new to me, though.
-
Oh damn. Fixed.
(And then by fixing that I double-post)

Yeah I couldn't tell whether it was intended by Valve or just a really good crack theory.
-
I want to buy some more great Xbox 360 games (I've just finished Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood). Is this one any good? Also what other classic games should I get?
-
This one is good. Both Mass Effect games are also very good.

I'm not sure if I agree with that bit about the growth acceleration. I remember hearing Valve say that GLaDOS locks down the facility before the Black Mesa Incident, and they also said that Portal 1 was contemporary with Half-Life 2. At least I think that's what they said.

AFAIK Portal 1 takes place some time in between HL1 and 2.
-
https://half-life.wikia.com/wiki/Timeline
After May 200-
-This is the period during which Portal is set. It occurrs a short amount of time after the Combine invasion of Earth
So yeah, what Sigz said.
-
I never disputed that; Valve said that the neurotoxin incident in the Aperture Science labs supposedly takes place in 1998, so yes, Portal 1 would occur some time after that. And then that same article you've linked suggests the most specific possible date range is the first decade of the 2000s, and Half-Life 2 supposedly takes place 20 years after the Black Mesa Incident.
Edit: Nvm, the neurotoxin incident takes place a few days before the Black Mesa Incident. But still, the time range still checks out.
Edit #2: By the way, it's very clear from the Elysian Fields-style ending of Portal 2 that no one on the Valve Portal team has ever been to Michigan. :lol
-
Wait what? I thought Aperture was supposed to be in Idaho.
-
I thought so too, but: https://half-life.wikia.com/wiki/Aperture_Laboratories

Oh shiiiiiiiiiiiiit.
This is sweet!
-
Yes. I will have to try this out.
-
So since the PSN is finally up, I was able to do the Steam account for Portal 2. It's psn_dimitriu21 (no "s" at the end) is you wanna add me.
-
Thought you guys might get a kick out of this. And then die from my friends and I being too awesome.

I MADE AN ENTIRE FUCKING THREAD ABOUT THAT YOU UNOBSERVANT DONGSLINGER AND NO ONE REPLIED
:sadpanda:
-
if it helps, no one replies to anything
-
It's my birthday today, but I have to wait another week to get Portal 2 because my little brother still has finals.
-
So, I'm texting a girl who's played and loved Portal 2, but hasn't played Portal 1 on the grounds that it's "just a prologue" and is "kind of creepy".
I'm astounded and appalled.
-
Shit in her cereal. Do it.
-
How the fuck is Portal even close to creepy??
-
This first Portal is kind of creepy when you tart to get that sense that you're completely alone in this huge testing facility.
-

This plus the Ratman rooms, assuming you don't get that it's supposed to be funny.
-
Yeah I dunno, I mean if it is creepy, it's creepy in a good way, like "oh wow, this is giving me chills, this is awesome."
-
It has a slight creepiness. It's not scary though.
-
I guess for the same reason some people get creeped out by HAL 9000, it's a machine which doesn't have remorse and it pulls the strings.
Only difference is that GLaDOS cracks me up.
-
Just beat it again. So good. I still need to get through the co-op. The guy who I played through the first two chapters with hardly plays anymore. :(
-
UNOBSERVANT DONGSLINGER
Nice.

Can't people playing on the PS3 play with Steam users on the PC? Because I'd totally play through it with you sometime soon, man.
-
I kind of wanted to play through it with someone who hasn't played through it already, but I'll play it with you if you act like you don't know what you're doing. :neverusethis:
-
I probably only remember a little bit anyway. I've played through it only once, about a month ago.
