Title: Exotic Pet Ideas?
Post by: Rina on April 12, 2011, 08:50:47 PM
Volk and I want to get a pet so we need ideas. We want something that's fairly easy to take care of, but is unique (not a bird/cat/dog/etc) but that isn't way out there or boring either. So no snakes or turtles or whatnot.

We were toying with the idea of a chameleon, praying mantis, or, like, tiny sting ray fish or something. So something that would be cool/interactive but not a pain in the butt to take care of or anything...

Not to be a downer but I read recently and I thought you had financial problems and family problems right now. An exotic pet is a cool idea but if you have this going on right now perhaps you should wait until a later point in your life to take up another responsibility.. since exotic pets especially are usually expensive or quite hard to care for.

And how you think Praying Mantis are more entertaining than Turtles is beyond me since they are harder to handle.. and also.. chameleons are VERY particular and you should only RARELY handle them.. therefore making them not very interactive for you. Just letting you know..

Like I said.. not trying to be a downer.. just concerned ._.

Why not get a beta fish? They're pretty, easy to care for.. and don't even need a filter (they can live in a large cup if you wanted. You can get one for like $5 and just find a clear clean glass bowl.

It's not exotic but it's pretty:

The last two pictures are "rarer" types (shape of the fins are a bit different).. but these types can go up to $200ish..

but even the regular $5 ones are really pretty like the red one or this one:

I've caught one with my hands and kept it in a container for a day once cause it was cool but let it free because I didn't want to starve and keep it confined..
But I couldn't reall handle it without the fear that it was basically going to cut my fingers ._.

But.. I guess?

Um, Volk and I don't live together, so this is actually HIM getting the pet, not me. I was going to contribute an old fish tank of mine towards whatever pet he gets and help him find one; and like we said - not terribly exotic. Praying mantises are $10 usually. Something very easily attained.

(And we read up on chameleons and we don't mind that)

I've had Beta fish before, and they are pretty, but Volk's not much into fish.

How about a tarantula? I hear they're quite fun to handle. Don't know how pricey or how hard they are to care for, though.

Interesting, I've never heard of that before.

It's true, my wife's (girlfriend at the time) beta fish ate her roommate's when they put 'em in the same container.  Also as far as fish go, they're not that cool IMO.

Jesus, I can't imagine having a tarantula near me while I sleep, I could never bring that nightmare upon myself. :lol  I sort of have an irrational fear of spiders.

Yes, Kura those do look easy to take care of when they're sleeping in the picture.

However this picture of them awake shows a much different creature....

Yup, it's why they're also called Chinese Fighting Fish.. haha..

Adami: :C It looks like that one is just having a temper tantrum.. My Golem was perfectly fine.. just so long as you feed them they wont try to kill you.

Betas only attack other male betas.  They're much more likely to be on the victim side in a community tank.

Why not get a beta fish? They're pretty, easy to care for.. and don't even need a filter (they can live in a large cup if you wanted. You can get one for like $5 and just find a clear clean glass bowl.

They can't live happily and healthily in a cup; they need 5 litres minimum (ideally 10) - and not a bowl, a tank - and a heater and filter with a spray bar or they're vulnerable to toxin build-up, stress-related infections and hypothermia. They will not live out their lifespan under those conditions (sure, the odd one does, just like the odd goldfish will get huge in a crappy little bowl, but that's like the occasional person who lives on cigarettes and vodka and takeway and still outlives everyone else).

I'm sorry to pick on your post (it's not personal), but if someone reads that and goes off and shoves a betta in a cup, it'll have a horrible life.

Rina, I think fish are awesome so I'm biased. Probably obvious. But I also know someone who had a sugar glider and she was nuts about it, so that could be the way to go.

wat

I've been wanting one for over a year now but they're pretty damn expensive once you factor in the habitat they require.

I was gonna say jellyfish too...

A buddy of mine is a big time aquarium afficionado....and the most hillarious thing he put in his tank were shrimp. They just run around the bottom eating shit. Very entertaining. He also had a blue lobster for a bit...started out the size of a craw fish then....when it got to about 8 10 inches he had to remove it.....one day he noticed it eating one of his other exotics.

Check the pictures of the red panda's in the chat thread yesterday...very cute.
I've seen skunk's as pets. De-Stanked and de clawed.
Do NOT get rabbits. Up all night, and they smell awful.

Get a duck, seriously they are awesome but you have to get them from birth.

I've never been big on reptiles but my brother had a water dragon when he was little and that thing was pretty fucking cool when he stopped playing dead every time I picked up him up.

Water Dragon definitely got my attention.

I got Volk a pet rock and he seemed less than thrilled with it, so now I'm going to replace it while he isn't looking with something more interesting. Maybe a Geodude?

Anyways, nah on Beta fish, I've had them and know Volk wouldn't be interested. Maybe on sugar gilders. Volk and I looked into them before and were like "nah", but we'll reconsider. (creepy little things...)

The pig would be awesome.  :metal   Buuuuuuuut way too much work..

When we get married we wanna get a Shiba Inu, but until then we'd like a easier-to-care-for pet. And he doesn't like snakes as a pet because they're "boring".  :sadpanda:

Jellyfish and stuff we toyed with. How hard as things like that to care for? (I want a min-stingy-rayish-fish.  :heart

Actually, no joke, the Vietnamese Pot Bellied Pig is a great domestic pet.  They're very smart.  You can train them with fruit loops.  In college I had a neighbor that had one it was so cool.  Imagine an obedient dog that doesn't bark and is friendly with other people.

Yeah, that's why I suggested it, totally legit pet.  A work college of mine was going to get one before she moved away, she was totally convinced and naturally we all thought she was bullshitting us, but after some research, they are the real deal.

Especially if you name it LeeHarveyKennedy.

Naming anything LeeHarveyKennedy makes it better. Had the only lyrics in "Friday" been my name repeated endlessly, Rebecca Black would have sold more albums than the Beatles ever have, iTunes' servers would have crashed under the demand for it, and makers of rhyming disctionaries would have to add twenty-three pages for all the new rhymes for Kennedy that rapper would have come up with. We wouldn't even be DTF anymore, we'd be LHKF, the song would be blaring 24/7, and we'd accumulate approximately 55 million new members. Most of them wouldn't even post, they'd just sign up to hear the song on repeat until they starved at their computer like a South Korean Starcraft player.*

* I might be exaggerating in this paragraph. There's really no way of knowing.
