WTF? I've just had an email telling me this has been moved to the O2 Acadamy, Leeds. While Leeds is a better venue, I can't really get there that easily. Poo - I might not be going at all...

Damn. I booked Wolverhampton, which has cost me a fortune in train tickets/tickets/hotel fees, because I really don't like the Dome as a venue. Could have gone to Leeds had I known, much better venue and cheaper than Wolverhampton too! Ahh well  :-\

Which is odd, coz I'm thinking I would have gone to Wolverhampton if I'd known! Wolves is a pretty nasty drive for me, all round Birmingham on the M6, but at least it's close. Doncaster was much further, but a straight and simple drag up and down the A1. Leeds not only adds nearly an hour to the journey time each way, but the thought of driving into Leeds, trying to find somewhere to park, trying to find the car park after the gig, driving round the city centre for ages trying to find the way out and a long journey home has turned a pleasant, relaxing night out into quite a stressful one. Looks like I'm finding a hotel in Leeds, which I really can't afford...

Ho hum, the perils of being a DT fan. Should have gone to High Voltage after all. They better be playing Wembley in the winter... :metal :metal :metal

I wonder why they changed from Doncaster to Leeds? Means it's a shorter journey for me and my friend like so I'm not complaining too much.

Wonder if they realised what a poor venue it is compared to Leeds :P I've been hating on the Dome in every thread that it has been brought up in and I'm from Doncaster  ::) I wish they would play Sheffield City Hall, that has to be my favorite venue I've been to and its only 30mins away, if that. Only thing is they don't seem to do gigs that often now, that all seems to be done at the Arena now, and IMO arenas aren't that great places to see a band.

Call me and old fogey, but I prefer intimate, theater like surroundings like in the City Hall:

I can only assume the Doncaster Dome was unable to meet some technical specification on the band's rider, and so the promoters were forced to switch venues. But it would be nice if DT played a few more gigs around the country - I wish American bands would appreciate that while the UK is pretty small compared to the USA, it's actully much harder and much more expensive to get around.

I will be there although Im gutted that they changed the venue... I took advantage of an offer with Premier Inn and it is non refundable, so i gotta travel from Liverpool to Leeds for the gig and then drive to Doncaster because I have the room booked for two nights - was gonna be a nice little break for my birthday, now its a bit of a pain in the ass! This will only be my 4th DT show - cant wait to see what Mangini brings to the table!

Yeah, I my got tickets too. Came the same day as the Black Crowes tickets for the 12th. I always feel better once I've actually got them in my hand, rather than just having a confirmation number on an e-mail.

Just booked a hotel in Leeds for the night. Add on the train fare and this is gonna be one expensive gig!

Where are you staying out of interest?

I just booked me and my mum in the ibis hotel which apparently is a 10 minute walk from the Academy, cost £35 for 2 people and breakfast :D

We went last time they played this venue and waited at the back and met the whole band (apart from Myung as he just quietly waved said hi and entered the venue, everybody knows the score with JM and nobody wanted to hassle him) We just waited round the back of the venue and joined a small bunch of people and greeted the band when they arrived mid afternoon. Oooh I may try and get my EB MM JP6 signed this time!

I remember last time being pleasantly surprised and impressed by Frost - hopefully the support for this gig will be equally as good! Cant wait now.

Ouch.
i feel OLD.
Went to see The Black Crowes at the Shepherd's Bush Empire last night and I am paying for it this morning. Didn't get home till 2.00am.
I think that after DT next Friday and Maiden on the 5th I might have to take up a less strenuous hobby, like having a nice mug of Horlicks while watching Midsummer Murders. Seriously, I've never felt so old and knackered in my life - So anyone going to Leeds - if you see an old geezer at the back snoring on his zimmer-frame, that'll be me.
Now get off my lawn! Young people today, we need another war, that'd sort 'em out...ZZzzzzzzzzzz...

Give them a ring, man. It's the only way.
You might spend a few minutes on hold, but they'll probably sort you out a ticket at the box office that you can just pick up on the day.

Got a reply from them that said that if i havent got the tickets 5 days before I am travelling to the show, contact them.... Dur... Thats what I just did! They said they are a ticket agency that is not responsible for when tickets are dispatched. ??????
I gave them a call and they said if I havent got the tickets 3 days before the show, that i should contact them. I fear the worst. Maybe the crap I went through with the hotels and now this - maybe its just not meant to be! Haha

Well last night was incredible... I'm off to work now on 3 hours sleep and it's totally worth it even though my head feels as though it's on the verge of imploding. Awesome setlist, Through My Words/Fatal Tragedy gave me the most intense goosebumps straight away and it made me feel even more strongly that I have to see Scenes played in its entirety at some point (fingers hella crossed for a 15th anniversary show in a few years like I saw with I&W in Newcastle a few years back). It did feel like a little something was missing in not seeing Portnoy behind the kit because he was always really involved with the crowd and a big force on stage but honestly, Mangini seems to have fitted right in and it was really touching to see how grateful he was for the massive amounts of applause he got for the solo drum solo (which was atypically enthralling I gotta say!!)

I was a bit gutted to end with Metropolis rather than Learning to Live but I'm over it, maybe James' voice wasn't up to the F#. The sound from where I was (just left of centre, 3ish people back from the barrier) wasn't great, the guitar was pretty quiet so every time there was a harmonisation with the keys or whatever, it sounded really strange only hearing the harmony rather than the actual tune. LaBrie was on f*cking fire last night and the whole band seemed to be having a really good time on stage.

Right I must dash, looking forward to hearing what other people thought of last night :D

Amazing show last night, truly brilliant. When I first saw the setlist they were playing I wasn't too sure, but at the show I realised that all those songs absolutely SLAY live! For example, These Walls is an absolute beast.

Caught JP before the show, got a picture:

EDIT: Also, what did everyone think of Eden's Curse? I thought they were atrocious; horribly cheesy, obnoxious lead singer (threw water on the audience during the first song) and the sound was dreadful (all I could hear was the rhythm guitarist's amp). Also, the lead guitarist was left-handed, playing a left- handed guitar, but it was strung like a right-handed? So weird

I would stretch ever further, saying that it's on of the best live videos I've seen of DT. It's so up close and in their face, it's like you're up there with them. I hope this guy or girl recorded more of the show!
There's so much new stuff going on on stage now, I can imagine it's hard to choose where to look. Mangini is back there being unhuman, Myung is much more interactive and alive during shows, Petrucci is Petrucci, Jordans stage is closer to Mangini then it was Portnoy making them interact more and off course Labrie being more of a front man and is starting to get more control of his vocals than he had in the start of the tour.

It's looking good in DT land.

Is JM foot pedaling the intro to UAGM?

I also liked how in the second verse ( 3:03 ),MM changed his dynamics and kept it low and is not like "let's hit it hard to impress them".I don't remember the song being always like this, sorry if it has always been like that.

Edit:And yeah, what is JM doing in the intro?

Under A Glass Moon - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XYyuy3G6N-I
That's a nice video, great quality. And I like how during JP's solo he doesn't film JP but the other members. That's nice for a change,to see the others playing that section. And Mangini is a pleasure to watch.

Wow! This must be my favourite clip so far from the tour. JM is so great to watch during the shows.
Is JM foot pedaling the intro to UAGM?

Yeah I noticed this too, I've never seen him do that. Has he gone Geddy Lee on us?

It really seems like he's operating bass pedals or something like that. In the intro, you can hear a low-frequency sequence that is in unison with the other instruments, and somehow, I doubt that they are coming from JR.

Yeah I know the type of things. It's a bass pedal keyboard (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pedal_keyboard).  The guy from Mastodon uses them as well.

Such a brilliant concert, JLB was at his best, MM is killer, and the fact i met JP in the street with his son topped it all off!

James sounded as good as I've heard him since the early 90s. Great gig and well worth the 2 hour drive and the late night.
Can't wait for the return with the new album and a different setlist- I have to say it's not the setlist I would have chosen prior to the gig but I enjoyed it all the same.

The Genie was awesome- I think I watched him more than anyone. I didn't miss MP at all- instead of his showboating and cheerleading we just got an awesome musician dedicated to his craft.

I can't belive how good MM is. His drumplay in the UAGM video is just mindblowing  :hefdaddy
Also, JM seems to be having fun and JLB sounds killer.

One of the best DT videos i've ever seen and surely the best clip from this tour.

I loved every second of this show... Mike Mangini adds a whole new intensity to the band, I was mesmerized! Thought the sound and mix where great... I find its usually the people within the first 10ish rows who complain, you gotta walk around and find that sweet spot!
I love this venue too - dead small, just perfect to see and hear them.
Anybody notice a few of them laughing during The Count of Tuscany? a tech guy held up a small screen to JP and he laughed and started looking over at JLB and JM and he was laughing for a few minutes.
Edens curse where not bad - didnt like the singer too much and the songs are all samey, but a decent warm up. Ive seen that guitarist on youtube before and never realised he was in Edens Curse.

Overall the night was perfect for me... Although the only negative: Get a shower before you go to a concert! Ive been to hundreds of shows, festivals etc and you can smell alot of bad armpits, but jeez there where some of the worst at this Leeds show! So please be considerate to other people and shower before you leave the house - you know who you are! haha

I'm always torn between walking around to find the sweet spot and wanting to be real up close and see the action... I always go for the latter, and usually end up whinging about the sound quality :P but it's a tradeoff I'm happy to  make.

I could not agree more with your comment about people  not showering before gigs, or not wearing deodorant. I was a few people back from the front at the Leeds show and man, it was almost unbearable at times, same with the Blackfield/Pineapple Thief show I went to a couple months ago, some of the BO there transcended anything I've ever smelt before, it got to the point at that show where it actually semi-ruined my enjoyment of the gig because at the end of every song I was holding my breath knowing that the dude was about to raise his arms and clap and knock out everyone within a 5-person radius.

Luckily it wasn't as bad as that on Friday :P

It was funny that JR's big moment out front with the Zen Riffer was ruined by what I assume was the wrong patch- he certainly wasn't happy and he soon gave up and went back to the keys. The patch certainly sounded awful to me. Technology huh?

I did have a shower!

On a serious note though (and this is pretty personal to me). I think this gig really made me realise how I cannot do crowds and lots of people, I'm a big guy (I was tall and ginger and fat) so naturally I'm gonna sweat more than others. But Jesus Christ I was sweating like a Lamb in a kebab shop, so if I did stink by the end of it - I apologise. I did put like half a can of Anti Perspirent on :D.

Standing is not for me anymore...

Haha no its people who turn up smelling like stale sweat who clearly didnt shower before they came out i have a problem with! Anyway i dont want to ruin a thread of what was an amazing gig!
I keep having flashbacks of the night and remembering how i felt watching them... Most bands have a big finally that steals the show but with DT every song could be the big finally. Blu ray please!

That was as good as I've ever seen them. The venue is perfect, I found the "sweet spot" right in front of the mixing desk and I can honestly say I've never heard them sound better - every note crystal clear, I could hear all the instruments and the spaces between them. Acoustically damn near perfect.

A great setlist - for a band that's spemt the last few tours relying on newer songs and heavier songs, it was great to see the likes of As I Am and Constant Motion given a rest. They played one song from each album, so we got plenty of old stuff, and we got some melodic stuff too. The band played so well and so tightly this was like the end of a tour rather than the start. A few new arrangements, new keyboard parts and stuff, to keep things fresh.

And Mike Mangini was the star of the show. The guy was grinning like a loon throughout, clearly having the time of his life. His drumming was spot on, he bought a new energy to the band, the drum solo was humourous and thankfully short, and I've forgotten that other guy already.

Highlights - JP's solo in These Walls, lovely guitar tone, the new arrangements in Endless Sacrifice, particularly the piano on the 2nd verse, Ytse Jam, Great Debate (the only song here I'd never heard live before) and The Count of Tuscany, played with an enthusiasm that was missing at Wembley.

Let's hope DT manage to keep playing these smaller gigs for many years to come - I'd hate to see them go "arena only".

And staggering out of the venue and straight into a hotel is seriously the most civilised way of seeing a band - no worrying about whether to leave before the encore to catch the last train...

It's a Moog Taurus https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moog_Taurus

He's been using it in studio too, JP put a pic up of a mixer or something and one track was labeled 'Taurus'

Fair enough!

But yeah, it was an amazing gig. My ears are what let me down, a few songs before TCOT my ears screwed up. Basically I wasn't able to hear anything in a decent pitch (it was really high pitched for me). I first noticed it around The Great Debate. Plus, like I mentioned before in the thread, standing is not something for me. My legs were aching so badly :(.

All in all though, it was my first time seeing Dream Theater and I was mesmerised. The closeness of the venue was awesome, and I really enjoyed it. I even managed to get Eden's Curse's guitarists pick, which was cool since I actually enjoyed the band (unlike others apparently). My mum also spent some money on me (getting me a couple of shirts and a DT keyring - awesome!). There couldn't have been more than 300 people at the venue surely?

Mangini was amazing, the drum solo was mindblowing. I was like - holy shit this guy is amazing.

Something I didn't enjoy was the way people were pushing around so much, I tried to stick by my mum because she is partially sighted but people just came bargeing in and it really p*ssed me off!

Try earplugs, my friend. Seriously, you have to protect your hearing if you're going to gigs like this. A good pair of plugs will block the distortion and the high-frequency white noise (which is what damages your hearing) while letting the music through. If anything, it cleans up the sound, and your ears aren't ringing for 3 days afterwards.

Seriously, you don't want to go stone-deaf in ten years time. If you're having any sort of hearing problems at gigs, take it as an early warning sign and do something about it now.

It was a tiny venue, I was stood at the front ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5nmsf5lbF-0 LOOK FOR THE GINGER HAIR) and I couldn't see many people. But it seemed full, but the venue was small.

Oh man that UAGM video is hilarious where JLB goes to run behind the stage into his little tent to dig holes during the instrumental break, but he realizes that part of the stage is all closed off and he looks like he freaks out for a second before running to the other side of the stage  :lol

It's got quite a big balcony that is much larger than it looks from downstairs, and they cram people into the raised area behind the mixing desk too. The place was pretty full, so 2300 people seems about right. It's larger than you think.

I'll agree with that. Me and my friends missed the train back, then our place to stay fell through so we had an impromptu night out in Leeds, trying to find places that were open all night because it was cold outside.

I'd second the advice to go with earplugs. This was the first time I used them in nearly thirty years of gig going and how nice it was not to have that ringing in my ears for days on end. I bought some cheap ones and I lost a bit of the top end but it was a good trade off really. I wish it got them years ago.
